Okay, we're going to try this again. Depending on how things go, I might decide to stop writing for VMQ altogether and move on to other things, but we'll see what happens. Anyways, let's get this going!

The snow crunches loudly under your boots as you trundle through the snow choked forest. Winter was out in full force, coating everything in a thin layer of ice. Normally, one wouldn't think of hunting in this type of weather or season. Not unless you were looking for a challenge.

You're pretty sure you're more than capable of handling it.

"We're getting close, Morgan." Simo says as he looks at the map he had inherited from his parents. The Imperial frontier was largely unmapped, and the parts that were tended to be highly inaccurate. You could only trust the word of somebody who had traveled these parts before.

"How close?" You ask.

"Well." Simo points. "Rautja is probably another half day's hike away, while we can get to Vorkuta and a couple of hours."

"I feel a 'but' coming on." You frown.

"But, the weather's getting worse. In my opinion, we should probably start setting up camp." Simo warns.

"Yeah, let's stop for today." You nod.

Your shelter is just a simple tent, but it does wonders keeping the heat in and cold out, thanks to Nemo and Qyburn's improvements. This was advantageous because neither of you wanted to start a fire in this territory. Fire drew attention and usually that attention came in the form of bandits.

"So," You grin as you snuggle into your sleeping bag. "Did you get any word from Alek and Elsa before we left the last town?"

"Well, yeah, the usual. Be careful, stay warm, and the won't settle for anything less than a bear pelt." Simo shrugs.

"And that was all?" You raise an eyebrow.

"Well... of course!" Simo laughs a bit nervously.

"Oh? Trying to keep a secret from me, of all people?" You coo as you snuggle up closer to Simo. "What could Elsa have possibly said that would make you so flustered?"

"Well..." Simo tries to salvage the situation but it's too late. You know his weaknesses, after all.

You lay your head on his shoulder and keep it there with a smile on your face.

"If you don't tell me I'm just going keep calling you 'Big Brother Simo' for the rest of this trip."

"Okay! Okay!" Simo's will finally breaks. "She said... to make sure I keep a close eye on her cute daughter in law."

"See, was that so bad?" You grin.

"And then she added in that good brothers should always look after their little sisters."

You break out in laughter. That definitely sounded like something Elsa would say. She just could not give Simo a break over that.

"Okay, let's get some sleep." Simo says as he lays down and turns off the lantern keeping the tent lit. You lay down as well, but make sure to snuggle up as close to Simo as possible.

The next morning, you wake up and realize that the howl of wind that circled around your tent was gone, meaning the storm had subsided. Opening the tent flap, you're almost blinded by the bright sunlight. The sky was a crystal clear blue, and the snow acting like a natural mirror weren't helping matters.

"Ah, you're finally. That means you get to pack up the tent." Simo walks up to the tent, handing you a stick of preserved beef. "I already scouted out the area. Doesn't seem to be anything out there."

You nod and start getting dressed, as well as packing up all of your camping gear. Fortunately, the both of you traveled light, so there really wasn't that much to pack and carry. Now with time on your side, you had a bit more freedom in where you wanted to go.

"Let's head to Vorkuta, see if there's anything there." You say. "It's on the way to Rautja anyways."

"Sure thing." Simo nods.

As you get closer and closer to the prison camp, you begin to become more wary of your surroundings. Maybe it's because you were starting to recognize certain landmarks, or maybe because it was some part of your mind screaming at you to run away. Or maybe because it was just so goddamned QUIET. There were no sounds of any natural wildlife here, as if even the animals were too scared to venture near this place.

Finally, after cresting a small hill, you finally see it. Vorkuta. Once one of the Empire's largest prison camps, it was now just a charred field of bare dirt where nothing seemed to be able to grow.

"So, what now?" Simo asks.

LOOT!
>>
>>28462597
You might as well try and find the labs, for all that's worth. You carefully pick your way through the burnt and toppled remains of the camp. From what you heard from Reznov, the prisoners burned the camp down during the riot. Most of them then scattered in all directions, while a few stayed behind to make their last stand here. The Empire's retaliation was swift and brutal, sweeping in with their full military might. They annihilated the remaining prisoners and hunted down the fleeing ones. Many of the prisoners that didn't get caught succumbed to the elements or starved.

Reznov was one of the few to make it, though he said he's never found another fellow Vorkuta escapee.

But at least they all died free, he said.

You lower your rifle as you move around the burnt concrete husk of what was once a prison block. You're not too worried about bandits or squatters out here. Everybody, including the bandits, were too scared or superstitious to venture into this place. It was dark and full of bad luck.

Running entirely on your memory, you make your way back to where you think the camp's main lab, where Steiner did his most heinous work, was. Or you at least tried to. Everything looked so different now, and your memories of that time weren't the best.

Well, you sort of roughly find where the lab is, if only because you found something that survived the fire. That chair. "Why would you-" Simo then looks at the chair. "Is it really that important to you?"

"Yes." You respond flatly. "I'm gonna kill this fucking chair."

"All right." Simo sighs and hands you a small cube of plastic explosive.

You set the fuse and place the bomb under the chair and get soe distance. A few seconds later, the chair disintegrates with a loud BANG, leaving nothing but a smoking crater behind.

"That make you feel better?" Simo asks.

"Much better." You nod. Even though it was small and petty, it was one less reminder of your past sticking around.

"Well, it seems exactly what we expected. Completely empty and abandoned." Simo sighs as he scans the empty, ruined field. "Should we keep moving?"

No, there had to some record, some piece of evidence of where you came from hidden away from here. You circle around the remains of the lab again, trying to find something, anything that would validate your belief.

"Morgan."

"Yeah?" You say as you lift a small slab of concrete.

"Morgan, we really should be going." Simo warns.

"Why? It's not like there's anybody out here to stop us." You say.

"Actually," Simo takes your shoulder and spins you around, pointing to the other end of the field. You see some small, fuzzy shapes moving about, definitely human.

"Who are they?" You ask.

"Don't know, and I don't want to find out." Simo whispers. "Let's get out of here while we can.

"Yeah, let's go." You nod. Both you and Simo quietly slip away, making sure to use the debris and tall grass to hide your exit.

"I think we should go into stealth mode." Simo says as you finally reach the treeline.

You frown. That meant you and Simo would have to move more carefully, taking less traveled paths and making sure your tracks were covered to minimize chances of being followed. It was effective, but very time consuming, It would most likely double or even triple your travel time, which meant you'd be reaching Rautja well after dark.

"Are you sure they're following us?" You ask.

"Fine." You sigh. It kind of annoyed you that Simo always seemed to be right.

So, you spend the rest of your day quietly picking through the forest, taking alternate paths and sweeping away your tracks. It's already well past sundown when you reach the town of Rautja.

However, the town isn't quite what you expected. You expected to see some nice little village or hamlet like the dozens you've seen in Gallia. Here, though, you see what is essentially a miniature fortress. The town is surrounded by a large wooden palisade, with a single, very sturdy looking iron gate at the front.

"Well, this looks troubling." Simo breathes.

"Let's just announce ourselves. What's the worst that can happen?" You ask.

"We can get shot." Simo sighs.

"You REALLY could use a sense of adventure, Simo. No wonder you mom keeps nagging me to take you out more." You sigh.

"Don't bring my mom into this." Simo mumbles.

"Hey! HEY!" You yell, banging your fist against the gate. "Anybody home?"

You hear the familiar CHICK-CLACK of guns being loaded and cocked. Three or four by your count. You see a head pop up from a parapet atop the gate.

"HEY! WHO THE FUCK ARE YOU TWO!?" The guy yells.

"We're just two travellers looking for a place to stay." You respond.

Though it was dark, you could see the man squint his eyes at you.

"Look awfully well armed for a couple of travellers."

"Honestly, who ISN'T armed in these parts?" You retort.

"She's got a point there." You hear another voice float out from behind the wall.

"No, we don't work for him, but we were there when he died and wished for us to speak to this Lysa." You say as neutrally as you could.

The guards look at each other nervously before the head guard speaks up.

"All right, follow me."

Both you and Simo follow the guard as he leads you through the streets to a rather large building near the town center, which you assume is the local inn. The lead guard talks to the receptionist for a bit before waving you forward.

"Okay, the woman you're looking for, Lysa, she's in the top floor of the inn. But... I have to warn you, but she's not very talkative. Didn't really get along well with the good doctor, you see?"

"Right." You nod.

"Well, I guess it'll cheer her up to hear the old bastard is dead." The guard sighs. "I suggest you don't leave the inn while it's dark. We have a curfew."

"Right." You nod.

You take a deep breath. After all these years, it was finally happening. You were finally going to meet your mother. What was she like, you always wondered. What she pretty? Was she nice? What were hobbies? Did she ever truly love you?

There was only one way to find out. You slowly make your way up the stairs, every step seeming to take agonizingly long. Finally, you reach the door and you stop short.

"Is something wrong, Morgan?" Simo asks.

"I'm... I'm not sure if I can do it." You blink. "What if she's not what I expect? What if I'm doing this only to get let down again?"

"Better than living a life of uncertainty." Simo says.

"I guess you're right." You sigh and slowly open the door.

What you see is a woman who looks impossibly old, her face weathered and her once black hair already grey and stringy. It looked as if had been sitting in that chair for years, never moving. What had happened to her after all this time?

You hesitate for a bit, but Simo "helpfully" nudges you forward. You stumble a bit but Lysa manages to take a hold of your hand and you suddenly feel... calm. "Alisa, I never thought I would see you again.." Lysa starts sobbing as well, returning the hug.

"I...I don't go by that name any more." You sniffle. "My name's Morgan now. I... I don't want anything to do with that man anymore."

"Your father -I mean- Steiner. What has happened to him?"

"I killed him." You say simply.

"I suppose it was inevitable." Your mother sighs sadly. "He... he used to be a good man, but his ambitions twisted him."

"I don't care. I found you, Mom." You say. "What happened? Where were you this whole time?"

"When you were born, Steiner would always boast about how you would be the resurrection of the Valkrur. I didn't agree with him speaking as if you were a test subject and threatened to take you away from him... but he beat me to it. He spirited you away to that cursed Vorkuta. The best I could do was move to this town and hope for the best, until... until I had heard the camp burned down, I thought..."

It's then that you mother starts to break down again.

"It wasn't your fault." You say, shaking your head. "You wouldn't believe how much you missed. I found a new home, Mom. Somewhere we could both live!"

"I... I don't think I deserve to be with you." You mother frowns. "I haven't been a good mother to you at all."

"You never had the chance to be one." You say.

With that, the two of you start tearing up again. You turn to see Simo just grin and back off into the hall to give you two some privacy.

>And that's it for tonight! Sorry if the things have ended a bit abruptly, but this thread has pretty much confirmed it to me. I no longer really have any interest in continuing VMQ, so it is with a bit of sadness that I'm announcing that I'm officially moving on from VMQ. It was a great ride guys, but even this one had to end.

>However, that doesn't mean I've stopped QMing. I'm still running PJ Witches and I got a new idea or two in the works. Just be sure to keep an eye on my twitter! Or you can find me lurking in #swq or #ques/tg/enerals.

>Peace, guys.

Thanks for running!

It was a fun ride from start to finish, a few things remain unsolved but continuing on without interest would not be a good idea.

Thanks for running and I'm looking forward to your other work!

You know, despite continually wondering why we could never get off Merc's Wild Ride(TM) I'm kinda sad to see it go.
