About 24 hours ago, the five Great Priests of Ligish turned you into a chitinous abomination. Now they want to press you into service early because some other monster is making trouble in the city.

"What kind of monster?" You ask with some concern.
The Blood Priest answers, "A giant worm, I've been told. A mindless animal, but somehow it showed up inside the walls. I have a theory. I hope I'm wrong."

They hurry you to the pyramid's vaults. It's not a proper armory, just a place where spare mismatched arms and armor are included among the piles of precious metals, acolytes' robes, and mysterious artifacts. Nakurtum, who's also been woken up and brought here, is tasked with helping you get armed and armored.

> Whatever feels comfortable. Probably a shirt of dull bronze scales that's loose enough to let you move
> Maximum protection for your human half. Bronze splints over extra layers of padding so it fits the way it's supposed to even though it was made for an adult.
> Maximize scariness. There's some gilded ceremonial armor covered in spikes and silver skulls. Also a helmet with a face-concealing veil so that maybe people will forget that you're a little girl.
> Armor is a waste of time. Just get out there ASAP and claw and sting it until it dies.
> Express weapon preferences?
> Argue that maybe they should just send humans who know what they're doing to take care of the problem instead of you.
>>
>>28475154
>Whatever feels comfortable
Giant worms aren't known for fighting clever so I don't think we need to worry about weakpoints just yet. Mobility is more important.
> Express weapon preferences
If they have them, shield and lance.

>> Maximum protection for your human half. Bronze splints over extra layers of padding so it fits the way it's supposed to even though it was made for an adult.

Lacking training in heavy armor, it would hinder us more than aid us.
>Weapons: shield and throwing spears
Ask your trainer to accompany you.

That's about right.

Get ourselves a nice chopping tool. I would say an axe, but we need a pole given our mounted position, so let's get a halbred or something.
Worms are weak to chopping and stabbing.
>>
>>28475456
I can get behind some throwing spears, over my axe idea.

We could use them to prevent the worm from digging with a few placed strategically.

"Something wearable. Some of this heavier stuff requires its own kind of training. Here, pull this on, kid."

Nakurtum gets you dressed, then hands you a n old shield and a one-handed spear. "Don't put too much trust in these. You need more training before you're passably good with weapons. Just, uh, think like a scorpion for now." You wonder where that would take you if you tried it.

"Will you be coming along, Nakurtum?"
"Of course I will. Wouldn't miss it for the world." She hefts an enormous two-handed axe. "Been looking for an excuse to use this."

You, Nakurtum, and about twenty guards are assembled by the front gates as they slowly open to reveal the moonlit city streets. You thought all the Great Priests would be watching from the terrace, but suddenly you notice the Gold Priest join you in the entryway and put a hand on Nakurtum's shoulder. "You stay behind. We need to question you. This whole incident might be caused by the Adventurers' School. They brought us the relic that made Hunzuu. It seems that they found another one and decided to use it themselves..."

> Don't object.
> "Go away. We need her!"

You were rather counting on having Nakurtum come along. She was pretty cool to you yesterday, and her presence is kind of comforting. You ca't believe she'd be complicit in making a rampaging worm for no reason. So you tell the Gold Priest off. "If it's really that important, come with us and talk to her on the way. Besides, maybe you can do some magic that will help."

"Gold magic doesn't really work that way. It's sympathetic magic. It affects things you already have. Against unknowns, you really want something else. Like that coward of a Bronze Priest, where is he?" But by the time he's finished talking, you, he, and the others have already marched out of the pyramid and into the city. So he comes along anyway.

There are people running toward you as you draw closer to the worm, but when they see you they all panic and find a different direction to run. You seem to be a less than encouraging sight to the common people.

The worm is rampaging around the plaza used for slave auctions. It's more like a giant razor-toothed maggot than a worm. Night patrols from the Footmen's School are throwing javelins at it, but their weapons bounce off its disgusting swollen hide. Half-eaten corpses lie near it on the ground.

Nakurtum thinks the situation over. "All right. Hunzuu, get the thing's attention. Try to get it tangled up in those awnings. We'll get behind it and see if spears and axes will work on it. Unless anyone has a better idea."

> Let's do this.
> I've got a better idea.
> I'm scared. Can we switch places? You guys go out first and be the bait and then I'll sting it or something.
>>
>>28476250
Seems like a fair enough plan.
Can we get some rope or something for our claws to hold? To better assist in our efforts to hold the damn thing down?
>>
>>28476250
>Let's do this.
We can come up with our own tactics once we've seen what works and what doesn't.
>>
>>28476250
I think our spear is not going to work.

Time to see if we can't get our stinger to do its job. Rush it, sting it and back off in the direction of those awnings. We'll follow that plan.
>>
>>28476293
though, the rope will probably snap in our claws, so maybe skip it and just hold it down with our vicegrip.

Stinging is encouraged.
>>
>>28476250
Forgot the spear, go in with your claws and stinger.
>>
>>28476250
> I've got a better idea.

The only ropes you see nearby are the ones fastening the awnings to the market stalls, uncomfortably close to the enemy. There are no nets around here, but there probably are some out by the river, if your company wants to take a few minutes to go searching for them.

You nod and gather your courage. You're pretty sure your spear isn't going to be useful here, but you raise your shield. "Sounds good." You emerge from the building you're hiding behind.

> Just yell at it and stay out of its reach.
> Get within range to claw and sting it, even at the risk of being bitten. You know you can end this.
> Yell for some of your men to go find nets.
> Yell to the surviving night patrols that you're commanding them now.
>>
>>28476250
>Let's do this!
We're no Warmaster yet, and we're probably going to last longer than any other fool they'd send in as bait.
>>
>>28476553
Get close and try to piss it off. We can toss it into the awnings when it countercharges.
How big is it relative to us?
>>
>>28476553
Alternate plan. Rush it. Shove our shield down its throat to prevent it biting us then sting it.
>>
>>28476553
>> Get within range to claw and sting it, even at the risk of being bitten. You know you can end this.
>>
>>28476593
Indeed, if it's small enough we could try to shield bash it.
>>
>>28476553
Rush at it, bash it with the spear and shield and snip snip with our pincers! Try to slice it around its mouth.
>>
>>28476553
If our venom is proportionally as powerful as a normal-size scorpion, we might put it down in one sting. It's worth a shot.

The maggot monster is about as tall as you when holding up its head and stubby clawed forelimbs. It's significantly longer than you, and certainly heavier. It's maybe 30 feet long, while you're 10 feet long, not including tail. It doesn't matter, though. You're not scared.

You rush straight toward the thing, shield out, claws snapping. The night patrols see you as another monster and retreat. The monster lowers its head and bares its teeth. You get right up close and personal with it. Nakurtum yells, "Careful, kid!"

You fall on it. You reach for it with your heavy black claws, just barely remembering not to reach with your human arms too. It snaps at you and lunges forward with incredible strength. You tumble backward with it and try to keep it away from your human half with your claws. You lean your human half to one side and try stinging it. Your stinger bounces off of it. You try again, and again. It bites into your right claw because its teeth can't reach any other part of you. Fuck, that hurts! You go for one of its many eyes. Good, now you feel your stinger penetrate. You feel your venom sac become lighter. It is wounded, howling and thrashing in pain, but it doesn't die immediately. You're still in extreme danger. Nakurtum and the twenty guards rush in after you but have a hard time finding a safe place to engage the thrashing monster.

You try to stuff your spear or shield in its mouth, but you're just too clumsy. It makes sense. You have all of one day's worth of spear training, and you've never held a shield before. Never mind. You drop the spear after lunging with it once. You release your claws for a split second to get a better grip on it. You manage to grab the corners of its mouth. That's good. You flip yourself over, which makes the monster flop over on its back. The guards stab at its hide with spears but don't seem to draw blood. Nakurtum charges in with her giant axe. She wants to go for its neck, where it's less rubbery. A dangerous choice. If you fail to hold on tight to this thing, it could bite her. Your claw is hurting and bleeding blue.

"Stop! I've got this!"

Nakurtum slows to a stop and brings her axe down to a neutral ready position. She looks at you. It's hard to tell because you're upside-down on your back, but she looks proud of you. "Yeah... I guess you do."

The guards try the only thing that's worked so far - going for the eyes. They pick up javelins from the ground and throw them at the monster's head. A couple of them hit home. The maggot-thing screams again, but not as loudly. It's getting weaker, and the veins under its skin start to run black.

When you think it's safe, you let go and right yourself. The maggot-thing flails around but is no longer fast enough to keep up with you if you simply withdraw. After a few moments, it crashes into the market stalls and stops moving entirely. The guards cheer.

Well, this is it. Your first deliberate kill. It certainly feels better than that time you accidentally killed an acolyte. And not just because it was a horrible monster. You feel a sense of accomplishment. This is truly your kill. Part of you wonders if the monster tastes any good.

You're not much of a public speaker, but you think you should try. "Thanks, all of you. For helping and for believing in me. I think we did pretty good."

Some of the guards nod and smile, a few bow their heads and pray, though they're probably not praying to you. One guard asks, "What now? Just leave this thing out here?"
Another chimes in, "We could use this as evidence that we should have night patrols of our own. The Footmen will have to admit that they were in over their heads."
Another answers, "But we still don't know where this thing came from! We have to..."

The suspense is killing you. While they debate their next move, you've got to know if this thing is really dead. You pinch its rubbery hide hard in both claws and pull it apart. It takes all your strength, but you finally tear it open to reveal the black blood and soft marbled flesh. You tear off a piece and taste it. You know you're immune to your own venom, so you're not afraid.

You get that same head rush again, but stronger. This thing tastes powerful. Not delicious, exactly, but satisfying. Nakurtum asks you what you're doing.

Nakurtum raises an eyebrow. "What? Why?"

"It feels like the right thing to do."

You tear the gash in the monster's skin open wider and serve yourself more monstrous flesh with your claws until you feel bloated. You overhear your companions talking about you. "Is she all right?" "Maybe this is just what they do." "I don't know, what's to protect us from her?" You ignore them.

As you lick your left claw clean, you recall the dream you had of the thundering voice under the earth. Was that a fallen scorpion-man? You feel strong enough to shake the earth right now.

Finally you feel satisfied. You turn back to see that the night patrols have returned. They have their javelins trained on you. One of them calls to you. "Explain yourself! Can you speak?"

I think we're riding high on beating a bad monster and eating it. Probably feeling exited. We really can protect people! We can fight and win! This is the first time something really good happened because of what happened to us!

Ah, let me rephrase: I think it would make for a better story if we began to (at least underneath) grow out of the innocent, ignorant youth. OP has already implied that we got significantly more cunning after the transformation, and I wouldn't be surprised if we had a bit more mental ability then a 10yo usually would.

The watchman's horror at your appearance becomes mixed with pity. "Those priests will sink to any depravity. I wouldn't be surprised if they made that thing as well as you! A perfect plan. Create the problem, then the solution, then take the credit."

The Gold Priest was busy hiding under an overturned basket, but he comes out when you mention him. He dusts himself off and tries to look dignified. "Yes. was, er, supervising. And I can promise you, we did not create the giant worm."

The patrolman points at the Gold Priest. "Your word is not good enough. You're under arrest for the murder of those who dies in the attack. Please come with us."

All the warriors on both sides raise their weapons.

You step closer to the patrolman. You meant to take only one step, but that corresponds to four or five scorpion steps. "Please don't take him away. We don't know he did it, and we don't want another fight. Do we?" You keep your tone reasonable, but the mess of blue and black gore covering your body certainly adds a threatening subtext to your plea.

He stares up at you. His small band of men failed to kill the worm, and you succeeded, so that doesn't say much about his ability to take you down. "No, we don't. We have to find who did it, though. If you care about the city, you'll tell us if you find any evidence. We'll just have to leave it at that. Come on, men. Let's see if we can figure out where this thing first appeared."

The Gold Priest, relieved that he won't be arrested, approaches Nakurtum. "You're from the Adventurer's School. The Adventurers found the relic we used to transform Hunzuu. Are you sure that's all they found?"

Nakurtum shakes her head. "I don't know anything. I wasn't on that mission. I was with your Blood Priest friend in red the whole time."

"Let's go ask them. But first let's clean me off."

You head towards their guildhouse out by the northern wall. At the first well you come to, you take off your armor and padded shirt, and you pour a few buckets of water over yourself until you're no longer a bloody mess. The dress you had on underneath everything else is blood-free but rather damp. The water stings your wounded claw. Nakurtum says she should put something on that when you get back.

You ask one of the guards to go check on the poorhouse. You're not sure if you're ready to let your friends see you like this.

On your way to the guildhouse, you see a few other bodies in the street. When you reach your destination, you get an inkling where the giant worm came from. The front wall of the building has collapsed.

"Amateurs should not dabble in magic without supervision," the Gold Priest says dryly. "Someone could get hurt. I'm afraid this may affect our business together, Nakurtum dear."

The patrolmen must not be good at following trails of death, because they reach the scene significantly later than you do. While you leave the guards to discuss this development with them, you head right inside. Nakurtum follows, leaving her axe behind. She's just looking for survivors.

You move some collapsed bricks out of the way with your uninjured claw and find a way in for you and Nakurtum. The first floor has collapsed into the basement. You see some corpses, but no survivors. The ones who weren't crushed or eaten must have taken the wounded and fled. Nakurtum is being very brave about all this. She checks crushed bodies to make sure they're dead, then gets back up and moves on as though they weren't people she used to know.

Nakurtum points to something in the mess. "That wasn't here before." It's a sarcophagus, ebony wood plated with strange bluish metal, open and empty, its lid lying elsewhere in the rubble.

You look inside the sarcophagus. There's dust and gravel, just like what's covering the rest of the basement ever since the first floor collapsed on it. There's also old bone splinters, and a crown of that same blue metal, with squares of lapis lazuli set in it. The crown is bent a little out of shape.

You don't find any giant basins of blood or other evidence that a ritual was centered on this sarcophagus. It could have just happened on its own, you suppose.

Nakurtum kicks a pile of bricks in frustration. "Damn it! I know we didn't try to bring that worm out on purpose. But even so, it doesn't matter. We're ruined. Disgraced. How many of us are even alive?" Her brave facade cracks a little. She may or may not be choking back tears.

You bring the crown back up to the others and tell them about the sarcophagus. The Gold Priest waves his hand over it, touches the glass beads he wears around his neck, then decides that it probably isn't cursed but probably is from before the Flood. The patrolman want to take it away, and he gives them permission. Too bad. Maybe you'll take that crown back again one day.

You ask the Gold Priest if we can keep Nakurtum as your combat instructor, no matter what. "We can trust her. I know it!"

He nods. "I know it, too. Better than you. Nakurtum, tell Hunzuu about your debt to us."

She still looks upset, but she complies. She holds out her weird arm, the one that's not covered in scars, the one that's red instead of brown. "The Blood Priest... rebuilt me. The price was five years of service, five years with no secrets. I don't know how much power they have to enforce that, but I don't intend to find out. I keep my agreements."

"Oh. Also, I'm so sorry. I'm sorry for everything. You've been really nice." You give her very delicate claw-hugs. You are aware of their superhuman strength, so you go for superhuman gentleness instead. She accepts it passively at first, but then she nods and sniffles and hugs your waist. "Thanks."

You retire to the pyramid. The Great Priests have moved your personal effects (basically just your bed, one dress, a table, and Mr. Clicks) to another large, unused room in the pyramid, one that doesn't have a big crack in the wall. As Nakurtum wraps your claw in linen to stop the flow of blue blood, the Blood Priest and the Rain Priest come in to see you.

"You did well, Hunzuu. We will see to the task of tracking down surviving Adventurers. We will also send spies into Turtak to determine if they had a hand in this, as well as anything else they might be up to. Tomorrow you will show yourself to the public. They will see you by the light of the sun and begin to accept you as savior of the city. After that, your entire focus must be training. Both of you."

"Well... will I learn more than just fighting?" You ask as you uncover Mr. Clicks' finely-woven wicker cage. He hides under the straw lining the bottom.

The Blood Priest nods. "You'll have to. You'll need to know strategy. Etiquette and religious rites will help the people think of you as one of their own rather than a brutish conqueror. The Rain Priest wants to teach you to read, but honestly, that's a waste of time. If you continue to be loyal, though... we might be able to teach you some magic."

"Don't hold out on me. I want magic!"

The Blood Priest sighs. "That alone tells me not to show you the blood rites until you're older. Every kind of magic has its own price. You'll understand one day."

"Not if you don't teach me!"

"You're a funny one. But the answer is no. And if any of my peers try to teach you their own magic, I expect you to refuse them as well."

"Well then give me some crickets for Mr. Clicks. Live ones."

"You were penniless and hungry for twelve years, and after two days you're already spoiled. This is why I don't have children. But fine, I'll see what I can do."

Later, servants bring you dead crickets. Apparently there aren't any live ones handy. You drop one into the cage, and Mr. Clicks comes out to inspect it. He picks at it a little, but you don't think he likes it. You think he likes you, though you're not sure how you came to that conclusion. Maybe you're imagining that he's the only one in the whole city who likes you because of what you are now, not in spite of it.

> You're not sleepy. Sped the night looking for live bugs for Mr. Clicks.
> Let Mr. Clicks out of his cage and play with him

Play with Mr. Clicks, of course.
We can find some snacks for him together! Then we can make a nice burrow to sleep under in our room.

Sleep.

Letting the scorpion out can only go wrong.

You let Mr. Clicks out of his cage. His tiny black eyes betray no emotion, so you assume he's extremely grateful. He tickles you as he crawls up your arm and clings to your shoulder for a while, then makes his way down your back. Soon he's beyond the reach of your human arms.

>roll 1d6 to see if you can get him back in his cage or if he decides to be a naughty scorpion

It's our feelings that get hurt.

I'm more worried that he will escape into a crack in the wall and never be seen again. But if he cooperates, we can follow him on a hunt and watch how he does it.

Mr. Clicks has made you realize something - you can't reach your whole body anymore - even with your claws. As he hangs out on your scorpion half, there's not much you can do about it. You try very slowly lowering your tail in the hope that he'll climb onto it and you can shake him back into his cage, but he doesn't take the bait. Instead he falls off of you and onto the floor, where he scurries into a little gap between two bricks in the wall. No! Come back, Mr. Clicks!

You can't sleep until he's safely accounted for. You spend hours stopping up the door with straw from your bedmats so he doesn't leave the room, then going out and looking for live bugs, finally finding a live beetle in the Blood Priest's workshop, bringing it back, setting it out on the floor, waiting for Mr. Clicks to take the bait, then scooping him up and putting him back in his cage. When you're done, it's very late, and you barely have the energy to get your bedmats the way you like them. As you drift off to sleep, it's not your great victory you think of, or Nakurtum's great loss, or the busy day to come - it's the question of why Mr. Clicks has to be so bad.

> I'm gonna call it a night here. Once I settle into a weekly schedule, are there any days you'd prefer?

Darn, no more scorpion quest for a while.
Did we at least watch Mr. Clicks attack the bug we set out for him? The naughty little guy.

I don't have any daily preferences.

thanks for running, op.

You really have to make your own schedule. But I think anytime in the afternoon EST is good. Most anons won't be able to participate in the mornings.

I'll probably go for something like Wednesdays plus whenever I can over the weekend. Will announce threads on Twitter something like a day in advance.

Yes. This is good to me.

I wonder if we saved any of that worm for later like I said.
>>
>>28482491
Saved it where? How?
>>
>>28482619
Well, we could have carried some back, or put it in our pocket, or any other number of ways of secreting a snack on your person.
