Always go for Silent Hill. All three carry a solid chance of horrible death, but with SH you're either buried by your issues or you get over them. I'd take a chance at Russian Roulette for some true peace of mind.

Racoon city. Best chances of survival, and if it gets too bad and I fail to escape, it gets wiped off the map so I will no longer care.

Silent Hill will be a living nightmare, hinizawa syndrome will result in my death and Dinos are bigger than me.

>>28516701

While that's true, doesn't it seem weird that the town makes you go through so much conventional combat before solving your emotional problem?
>>
>>28516752
Maybe, but it's purgatory. Suffering's gotta go with the territory, it's gotta make your issues manifest to overcome them, and you're never thrown against things you can't defeat or avoid.

No one said the town was a nice psychiatrist.

Hopefully, the dinosaurs have thick enough skin to keep from being infected by the regular T-Virus zombies, and the more violent G-Virus monsters and medical experiments will stay in their death-holes. If Birkin tries to crash his way into the rest of the world, the various locales and their supernatural influences (The Shadow, the entirety of Silent Hill, and Jason's soul) would boil away his searching tendrils.

It's like the Paladins always say, evil is inherently destructive to evil.
>>
As a horror game fan, Hinamizawa.

Hordes of zombies is a shitty deal, so no Raccoon City.
Silent Hill I guess probably has the highest chance of survival, strangely enough. As long as we aren't fighting any bullshit Silent Hill 3 bosses where everything is huge and takes a billion hits.
Hinamizawa might end in death but at least the descent into madness will be fun, also Mion is my waifu so.

Well, it depends what your psyche is like. Everyone we've seen go in there had some kind of crippling emotional trauma bubbling just underneath the surface. A well adjusted person with no psychological problems or traumas could potentially chill out there no big deal.
>>
>>28517906
You're knowledgable of Stephen King's work, right? A game developer made a sort of parody of that stuff called Alan Wake, where an intelligent and most certainly HANDSOME writer gets trapped in a rural village by the shadowy manifestation of his creative works. He'd evidently planned on writing a novel about a black shadow taking over people's bodies and minds, and having them attack people.

Hinamizawa will probably be the most traumatic, but as long as I stick to the main cast like glue, I'll become important enough to the plot to get caught in the time looping, and thus get to share in the Good End.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I always thought that wendigos were shamman-types that believed they could take something's form and/or power by consuming the thing's flesh. How off-base am I?
>>
>>28516649
FUCK YOU SIGN

I IDLE WHERE I DAMN WELL PLEASE
>>
>>28518399
Wendigos are footless, lipless, eyeless hunger spirits formed when someone turns to cannibalism out of desperation then dies anyway. They roam the wilds consuming any human they can get their bloody hands on.
>>
>>28518399
Very off-base. The Wendigo, depending on the story being told, is either a half-demonic poltergeist that craves human flesh and will forcibly take control of human bodies to eat it, or a creature transformed into a human, also craving human flesh.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wendigo
What you might be thinking of 'taking something's form' is due to the common belief that people became wendigos if they consumed human flesh willingly.

Wow, that's even cooler than I thought it was. I'm always slightly taken aback at how, for lack of a better term, how utterly "metal" Native American (both North and South) mythologies are. >>
>>28518550
>>28518568
>Rape isn't very common

Seriously, the ONLY reason SH2 had all the rape is because the protag was full of repressed sexual desire since his wife was dead and he couldn't bring himself to move on. Unless you have similar issues there's no reason your Silent Hill would feature Pyramid Head or sexy bodied nurses.
>>
>>28518562
Pretty much all folklore is full of metal stuff.
>>
>>28518603
You crash in the Arklay mountains and come across a mansion.
>>
>>28518550
Yeah, but I'm pretty sure that only happens if you don't overcome your personal problems. As I recall, Eddie and Angela only died because they never got over their baggage, unlike James, hence why they died and James never got killed by PHead. It really comes down to your ability to better yourself as a person.
Of course, Silent Hill only seemed to take in extreme cases in the past. I'm not a murderer and I'm not horribly traumatized by anything, so I haven't got much to worry about. Probably.
>>
>>28518620

Turn back around through Hinamizawa. I'd just roll up the windows and stop through nothing, if I drove through there before, an second time should work ok.

Then Silent Hill, with the same technique. It's only when idiots stop to investigate something do they get trapped there.

Raccoon city would be last choice, because the streets are impassible with blockades and wrecked cars and lord knows whatever else.

So... What triggers purgatory to shove meat monsters in your general direction if it can get the same effect with non-physical threats?
>>
>>28519480
Let's take this all in. We have a majorvVirus outbreak, a psychological torture/therapy dimension hunting for patients/victims, a town where parasite drive people to insane violence that's caught in a time loop, the dark entity taking over people and trying to find an artist who can write it free, and what I can only assume is a third energy experiment gone wrong all occurring in roughly the same area.

What else can be added to this complete clusterfuck?
>>
>>28519480
And just as soon as you managed to not only kill the TGV Rex AND burn the corpse so it doesn't become a Crimson Head, some asshole named Palethorn recites a long-dead sorcerer named Zaroc's long-lost spellbook, coincidentally JUST as some bitch named Eve sets off her master stroke using viruses and an usual amount of assorted meats!
The day just keeps on getting worse, doesn't it?
>>
>>28519575
Some people, when faced with a faceless horror, shrug and say "well, that's weird, but at least it doesn't have fucking teeth."
Then the meat-things with fucking teeth come in.
>>
>>28519575
There's a lot of meat to use, and that shit spoils. Besides, you've got so many of those cute little Larval Stalkers wandering around, you probably have a whole bunch of Infantile Mumblers and Puppy Wormheads sitting around, and it'd just break their wittle heart-analogues if they didn't get the chance to savage someone.
>>
>>28519588
Well somebody mentioned Red Mountain, so I suppose that means that the T-Virus is also now Corprus and might result in zombies with magical powers, and also anybody sane you meet is probably a Sleeper waiting to stab you in your sleep and ritually consume your flesh.
>>
>>28516649
Silent Hill, my issues are pretty small time so worse case scenario is that I get chased around by monster that look like my mom for like an hour.
>>
>>28519601

>>
>>28519638
It's not a severity thing. It's a physiological thing. If the visceral horror of meat and blood or the primal terror of the chase and mauling are what's going to fuck you up the most, then you get those. If instead you're more likely to curl up into a shattered ball and weep as you're tormented by faceless apparitions that never let you get a look at them, then you get those.
Some people are most scared by a specific thing. Some people are more scared specifically by Nothing.

It seems like everyone here is picking Silent Hill. Excellent taste, but I think being in your own personal hell may not be worth it, it might just be better to go to Raccoon city and get ate by zombies, you might be able to come across weapons or other survivors there. or deal with the crazy jap-monsters behind you.

Though Silent Hill might be interesting, if only because it will let all your doubts and troubles bubble up and manifest into physical form, and hopefully you will be stronger because of it.

I can only dream in very morbid curiosity what my monsters and punishments would look like.
>>
>>28518602
The fact that you're such a pussy-ass beta will actually be very very bad in SH and you'l have a shit load of issues and horrid monsters influence by how beta you are.
>>
>>28520400
If you go to Silent Hill, you're at least guaranteed to get a rudimentary bludgeoning weapon for your troubles. Also a nifty radio.
>>
>>28520400
It's really easy to work out what you'd see in SH.
Think of all the horrible things you can. Take note of the ones that don't scare you shitless just in thought.
Now, none of those will show up. But you can work out by reverse process of elimination what will, since your mind is never going to actually envision it's worst possible fears. Just take what you can think off and set it aside, and everything you can't must be the true horror.
>>
>>28520400
I know that my Silent Hill would be horrible, but it would be less frightening and more soul-crushing. Raccoon City, on the other hand, is assuredly lethal.
>>
>>28520400
Oh, and there's the nuke with Raccoon City's name on it, courtesy of the Umbrella Corporation.
>>
>>28520451

>since your mind is never going to actually envision it's worst possible fears

I'm not sure it works that way, but I understand.

Well, let's see here... Based on traditional Silent Hill enemies, here are a few of my guesses.

>Dogs
I would most certainly have dogs. It's hilarious, I actually love dogs, but for one period in my life I was scared of dogs for like a week after I was bitten by a dog. Best part is the whole time I KNEW I shouldn't have been scared, I had a nightmare where a dog was chasing me and as soon as I woke up I laughed because I shouldn't be scared of dogs! My mind and body makes me scared though, so I know the dogs in my SH would be very vicious and chase me, scaring the shit out of me. Oh and they'd probably laugh and cackle like Hyenas because I love Hyenas too, but that creepy laughing would throw me right off.

>Nurses
This is where I differ. I'm not scared of needles, doctors, or nurses. I'm actually a medical student myself. But I do have secret fears of getting into a situation where I hurt somebody by accident in my life, meaning I'm probably much more likely to get monsterous, deformed patients. I am also afraid of deformed and mentally retarded people, like childern and babies, so I have no doubt some fetal, harlequin baby fucker will crawl on the walls and scream at me until I slam it to death with a metal pipe.

I guess I just have "adult" fears in that sense. I'm really scared of legal trouble and hurting other people. The worst situation I can think of is that moment of dread right after getting into a car accident or something similar, and for that split second before you do anything you just wish, HOPE that it's a dream or that you can reverse it, hope that you can fix it and make it not happen, but you know you can't. That moment makes me shudder every time. I'm not sure how you'd put that into a monstrous form, but I have no doubt I'd shit bricks at the sight of it.

>>
I've never played Silent Hill. Sounds like I should though.

Could someone sum up what Silent Hill does exactly? Is it especially malevolent or does it just activate your inner psychic turmoil?
>>
I like how everyone's interpretation of Silent Hill is always synonymous with "personal hell"

Its not JUST a personal Hell. Fuck, SH4 had NOTHING TO DO with the bland protagonist at all, for the most part.

SH1 and SH3 versions of the town are farm more accurate to what you might experience. It all depends on WHEN you go there. And since Raccoon City is on the table, SH1 is your probable time line of arrival. It'll be less interesting, probably still more survivable than zombie army, but still. Demons aren't easy to fucking deal with.
>>
>>28520796

What this Anon said.

>>28520800

Silent Hill is a mirror, it reflects those who look into it. This DOES NOT always lead to a personal hell. Those with a great inner guilt or issues will receive a greater dose of the whole 'personal hell' thing. But those who have little, like Harry Mason and his daughter, who are the protags of Silent Hill 1 and 3 respectively, did not have inner guilt or doubt beyond most people; they weren't in an inner hell; they were in a OUTER hell, their Silent Hill was based and sculpted by cults and the other nasty, outside forces at work in silent hill.

Think of it this way; your own personal fears and doubts will manifest itself, with it being stronger with your doubts and fears. It is also a place of heaping darkness and evil.

The town's history would be hilarious as long as you weren't actually there. It was like a place for evil and ancient death cults, then the colonists came and did some bad shit, then it was a prisoner of war civil war camp (which was full of REALLY bad shit) and later was grounds for a sanatorium, and just a million other murders and cults and bad, bad things that put on so much negative mojo the town is rightfully fucked.

tl;dr If you go to silent hill expect a personal experience and evil dogs, nurses, and to get fucked up in one way or another.
>>
>>28520796
Its a great series. SH1-4 are great, with 2 and 3 being the REAL stand outs.

SH1 - Crazy cult wants to revive their 'god-demon', reality is warped by the traumatized spirit of a little girl effecting the towns innate spiritual power

SH2 - Guy goes looking for his dead wife, realty warps due to the 'spiritual power' that is inherent there and the despair brought on by him and a few others in the town.

SH3 - The cult comes back, this time after the now teenage girl from SH1, still wants their 'demon-god-baby'

SH4 - Crazy ritual involving a dead serial killer ghost (i know what I said), his victims, and the most bland protagonist.

SH0 - Don't play this one. Its a dumb rehash of SH2 with nods towards SH1 to make it look like it fits the canon

SH5(Homecoming) - Skip it. Its a poor-mans version of SH3 with really terrible melee combat.

SH6(Downpour) - Shit version of SH2 meets Alan Wake setting. Monster design is particularly shit in this one.

So, what would happen to say a sociopath? Someone who was maybe accidentally responsible for the death of his friend but doesn't mind too much because it ensured his safety?
>>
>>28520800
>>28520911

This is all pretty interesting. I'd likely fall into the positions of the characters in Silent Hill 1 and 3.

How did the town manifest itself for them then? Was it just a generic hell, rape city or a survivable spook shack?
>>
>>28520951
I think they'd be pretty straight fucked right out the gate. If they don't feel the guilt straight forward, the town will hammer them with it in some way till they feel SOMETHING.

Whether its the guilt or a horrible death at the hands of mental demon spawn.
>>
So does Silent Hill actually exist as an actual town, or is it entirely Fog World/Otherworld?

I keep hearing the statement that it's a "boring small town" but it seems to be anything but.
>>
>>28521050
It's a boring, small, abandoned town. Most of the time. If someone with severe mental issues decides he wants to investigate it (or is forced into doing so by the town's unusual geography), shit gets unreal.

It was being effected by the town's cult and their chosen sacrifice to their god-demon-thing.

Ash and fog, destroyed entrances and exits to the city's roads (once you're in, you're in it for the long haul, namely to save the girl from being sacrificed) random bouts of darkness and "generic" nightmare fuel monsters that don't quite look like one thing or another (lots of flayed dogs, flying demon bird things, and the like for generic enemies)

SH3 was a lot more "traditional". everything looks rusted to shit and rotting, darkness everywhere, random monsters that just look fucking terrible (pic related)
>>
>>28520951

Nobody knows about the sociopath. And if 'the person doesn't mind too much because it ensured his safety' you'd be damn sure the town would punish him for that until he felt bad. It would break him down until he realized that he was wrong. It has a sense of justice in that sense, but I can't say for certain. It's still just a video game.

>>28520987

You should play or look up Silent Hill 1 and 3. But basically think of it like this;

>Rusting metal
>Razor wire
>Darkness
>Creatures based on the nightmares of a very, very sick child

Dogs, Nurses, and hospitals all play a role in anyone who visits. Expect the switching between a dark and light world; the dark world being full of the rusted metal and really nasty beasts- plus the classic air siren to show the transition.

If you go look at Silent Hill 2 you'll notice that the 'dark' and 'light' worlds aren't the same. Another way the town manifests differently is in it's dark or evil or nightmare worlds. In Silent Hill 2, James's dark world was just very dark, showing regular urban decay. (Discolored walls and tearing paper, windows caked over with filth enough to block out almost all light, dust and old furniture piled up.) It's not quite the same as the SH 1 and 3 dark worlds of rusted metal grating and evil machinery. It's more urban and interior. It's more static and passive, a slow decline as opposed to a hellish instant transformation. Oh, and a recurring theme of jails and iron bars. These all have meaning and symbolism in the characters that go there. If you really want a feel however, play the game for yourself. Or just watch let's plays for the games, as I did :P

The best plan.

Question.

How screwed would Issac Clarke (Dead Space) be?
After DS3
>>
>>28521175

Does he have his RIG?

A plasma cutter?
>>
>>28521175
Since I never played DS3, how fucked up was he after all that FUCK YOU AND FUCK YOUR MARKER stuff?
>>
>>28521186
Just Rig.
He has to find weapons in town.
>>
>>28521217

He'd probably do just fine in all of the locations, although I'd give a slight edge to Silent Hill because he's dealt with all that shit before.
>>
>>28520913
Downpour wasn't that bad. Yea, monster design was bad, but the overall themes were pretty solid.

It was certainly better than 4 was, which just had a mess of a plot that was barely connected to SH anyways.

You also forgot Shattered Memories, which had a pretty strong story.
>>
So, here's a question:

Would you ever want to run a game in a Silent Hill style location?

Doesn't have to be modern setting either. this thread has kinda spurred me to throw my players into a situation like this...
>>
>>28521146
Silent Hill 2 is so amazing, I think, for the sheer level of detail put into the game.

Hell, some of the shit they put in there you is almost impossible to notice unless you've played the previous game and understand why they made the change.
>>
>>28521290

Not really. I love Silent Hill enough to know that trying to emulate it will come up short, so I'm more than content with playing the games and circlejerkingtalking about it with you guys.
>>
>>28521290
>>28521355

I have a rather fun idea to make Silent Hill the "final boss" in my Unknown Armies games. Cheers.
>>
>>28520609
You forgot Mind Cordiceps.
>>
>>28521094
Not abandoned, people live there. It's a small resort town. It's just that he protagonists never see that part, because they're in the Fog/Other world.

By the way, if you ever need inspiration or want to see the real Silent Hill movie, get a copy of Jacob's Ladder.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0099871/

I was kind of disappointed that they never used this sort of "Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" story for any of the games(? I didn't play Homecoming, but it seems like it'd be the one that fits best.)
>>
So what happens if you decide to kite a t-rex into Silent Hill? Does the town decide to focus on you or does it decide to fixate on the dinosaur's hang-ups and psychoses?
>>
>>28522081
As much as I /love/ that short story, the "It was all a dying dream" thing is done to death.
>>
Hinamizawa seems the best choice. History repeats, without your knowledge, until Happy End.
>>
>>28517122

Nobody?

It is a dinosaur.

It's never mermen. Unless it's ironically mermen.

Well we kind of know the approximate scenario to get out of Hinamizawa successfully, even if their scenario only worked because it was perfect for the amount and identity of the people involved. Plus, Rika already went back in time and prevented the whole thing at the end to Kai anyway. So Hinamizawa is the obvious correct answer.

>Elderitch mindfuck horror
>Mankind's punishment for playing god
>A rural japanese town that's normal 90% of the time and shit the other 10%
Hinamizawa because in my opinion it is the least fucked up of the three.

There are NPCs that live in Silent Hill that aren't just random monsters, as has been shown.

Most people who go through/to Silent Hill probably wonder why such a small, sleepy little town is mostly empty and looks so abandoned, then continue on their way.
>>
>>28520688
Damnit, Dresden.

Thanks for spoiling the ending, asshole.
