It's been 200 years since the end. In matter of seconds billions died, great empires crumbled and sky was veiled by caps of nuclear mushrooms, dust and smoke. The great winter came, one that lasted 15 years and tried to kill those who survived explosions, blastwaves, radiation and global chaos. But humans prevailed the death itself and raised again after over a decade of hiding in old forgotten medieval strongholds and sewers, like rats feeding on mutated fungi, earthworms and cockroaches.

The year is 2212 and the Great Night is finally over. Stripped of pre-war technology, with remnants of their humanity left survivors crawl out of their lairs to start life anew.

>TL;DR: Semi-realistic post-apocalypse in Europe general.
Let's start with reports from your own countries: politics, religion, weapons, tech, education, wildlife (with a little bit of good o' sf), tribals, factions

Former United Kingdoms.
In the North the Scots and Yorkish fell to border raids again, and there are occasional incursions from Ulster. Glasgow remains unchanged.
In the South, the Burbarians rule with iron fist from the Marches to Kent.
Wales held out for a time under the watchful eye of King William, but now only the valleys remain free of the burbarian taint.

There's talk of launching an excursion for the continental mainland, but the New Europa Coalition is shooting foreign ships on sight so we'd have to take the Chunnel. That means fighting through the burbarian hordes, and even then they say the Chunnel is populated by the descendants of the first immigrants sealed in by Harry's Wall.

Czechia

When the walls fell, the country was hesitant to accept flows of migrants incoming from all manners of bizarre directions, but the populace accepted with warmth everyone who was willing to to lend a hand in reconstruction.

The area has escaped majority of direct damage during the Happening thanks to its irrelevance, and its well defensible position made it a natural spot for rekindling the civilization of before the fall, although its domestic armed forces were quickly dismantled and the land commandeered by forces of neighboring nations.

Czechia Nova is a cosmopolitan melting pot of all nations and languages of old europe, and its relatively safe from roving bands of raiders thanks to firm hold of the Covenant - an awkward, but so far stable alliance the western wing of russian mafia have signed with representatives of the military in the interest of bringing about a rule of order and mutual survival.

The former Kingdom of Denmark

Most of the smaller populated islands, their inhabitants stranded on essentially prisons without resources, fall to chaos.

On the mainland, a combination of constant warfare for the sparse resources and disastrously rising sea levels lead the population to adopt a religion based around the concept of Ragnarok. The adherents believe that not only is the End here, but it is at it's climax and soon all of existence will be snuffed out.

The land is utterly barren and fruitless, mostly abandoned but for a few backward strongholds starving as they fight each other for the few scraps of food among them. After years of inbreeding and intellectual stagnation, they are little better than animals on two feet.

The new coastlines are one long line of raiding camps, shipyards becoming the capitals of resurgent viking cultures. Because of the widespread belief of the end times, almost all time and effort is spent on either raiding neighboring countries for food and/or seeking out the most dangerous and extravagant battles to cement their passage to Valhalla.

The many scattered castles and museums have been populated and serve as not only temples, but workshops. Groups of pilgrim merchants from the raider cities regularly travel to them for religious guidance and weapons. Those who live in them, while still under-educated, are much more learned than the 'vikings', and trade out of necessity, for nothing grows in the land. They suspect the end times have not actually come.

Those who live in the temple forges, known as 'Dvargr' by the raiders, tread a fine line; on one hand they must appease the religious expectations of the doomsday religion, but on the other must keep them from dying out entirely and leaving no vital resources to bargain for. The weapons they produce are almost entirely copied from those on display, war axes and swords, etc.. but using modern materials and the ancient equipment found in the castles.

>Oh, they're pissed off.. and pissed on, raped over bonfires, pillaged, homes razed to the ground and taken home as slaves. Usually in that order. Just like the good 'ole days.

Lacking the knowledge of mechanical repair and maintenance, those who live in the former Denmark use whatever modern technology they find until it breaks down completely. Transports like cars and ATVs are cannibalized for their parts completely once they break down and become raw materials for the Dvargr; car doors turn into hefty shields, tires into lightweight armor, even the smallest gears and cogs are warped and twisted into trinkets and jewelry.

Due to a combination of residual radiation, brutal lifestyles, and sparse food, the denizens of this wasteland have a dramatically lowered life expectancy ranged between 25-35 years, although the Dvargr occasionally reach into the 40s. As a result, in the coastal towns whatever time is not spent raiding or in pilgrimages is spent in vast communal lodges known as Halls. Reports from those few outsiders who have made it inside these halls are disorienting and frightening;

People come to and from huge feasts that never seem to start or end. Without any regard for privacy or decency, writhing masses extend in ever shifting orgies that incorporate not only adults, but the young and the few animals kept as pets. In what appears to be religious rites, masses dance and growl and sing in trance-like states, intoxicated by the thick smoke of burning narcotics. The reports are such that it is unclear where one activity ends and the other begins, or if there even is separation between them.

Though modern weapons like firearms and explosives are rare and precious here, almost all incursions into the country are never heard from again. It is assumed that those approaching from land, the former German Republic to the south, are overwhelmed by the weakened but many savages, and those approaching by sea by the many standing raiding parties.

Living in York I see it as a hilarious idea that the Yorvik Viking centre and the Royal Armory are two of the few buildings left in Yorkshire. So you basically have Rag tag Viking Yorkshiremen in half plate and flat caps wielding an assortment of weapons throughout history.

Depends on which culture has most an impact on their shared memory. Well, that and whichever material survived the bombs, the Edda or history books.

>>28581563
Once is an anomaly, twice is a trend. I dont know, seems like the times when Germany was most.. well, MOST was when they had an empire or other kind of dictatorship. I always see the post apocalypse as a time of desperation and brutality, at least compared to our times. So if I was a German in their war-sundered times, I'd go for the strong leadership of fascism over democracy any day. Shit gets done, even if it is brutal as all hell.

I've traveled a lot through Europe, and it seems like most countries have a crush on the Vikings actually. The French, especially around Normandy, eat it up like it's going out of style, and in the UK + Ireland, hell, the era of Danelaw seems more prevalent than the Saxons or even Celts.

There's a reason the Normans like the Northmen.

it amuses me that the Vikings proper backed the current king of England, while their cousins backed the duke of Normandy.
>>
>>28583729
>chainsaws are lousy as weapons

I'm sure you'd feel differently if you were on the defending side. Besides, the roles of the berserker were simple: Disarming and shock & awe. Imagine a stark naked, drug crazed, horny, 6 foot tall man sprinting towards you screaming as loud and angrily as he can. Now, imagine he's swinging a chainsaw around with no regard for his or other's lives, much less yours. "Magic" mushrooms were a favorite of theirs, and I can tell you from experience, you dont lose energy or notice wounds/pain until the next day.
>>
>>28583708
>Shit gets done, even if it is brutal as all hell.

And what does that matter if you've been dragged off by the secret police and executed for something as inane as disagreeing politically?

It doesn't matter how strong a nation you have if you're dead and so long as there is such a ruler, not only are you not free, you're not safe or secure.

>well, MOST was when they had an empire or other kind of dictatorship
The HRE was hardly dictatorial, it's not like it even had a central government. It even tolerated every kind of government in the subject states.
>>
>>28583708
In WW1 everyone was an imperialist. Most of the bad image came from British propaganda and the Kaiser being a jackass.
Violent fascism was another thing not in any way unique to Germany.
The rest was mostly just not important enough to remember.
It was very en vogue in Europe and elsewhere, especially after democracy apparently "failed" to deal with the economic crisis.
And let's not forget how far France went out of its way to piss off Germany at Versailles and during the 20s.

>>28584031
Neither was the second empire especially oppressive. No more than Britain at the time.
>>
In former Germany, the heavily industrialized West having been completely devastated and turned into stretches of ruins upon ruins.
The bigger cities; Berlin, Cologne, Hamburg and the like have turned into permanent war zones as Turks, Kurds, Russians and Arabs are permanently busy bashing each others' head in over their claims to petty tribals kingdoms, caliphates or the like.

The East in turn has suffered far less hits, yet it already had gone down the gutter before the Bombs fell, and little changed to the better. Instead, hosts of local Neo-Nazis have errected what they call the "Fourth Reich", ruling over the sparsely populated country with a fleet of former military jeeps. Though one may argue that the Reich is a safer place than the anarchy-infested ruins of the west, life under the fascists is harsh, miserable and merely a rumor about one having a Non-German ancestor somewhere in the family tree is good enough a reason for the fascists for having you raped to death by their specially trained wardogs.
>>
>>28583961
We're talking about the post-apocalypse, people are not as durable as they are today. A combination of malnourishment, lack of proper exercise and lack of reliable armor means people are much more vulnerable. But that's besides the point, as I said, they were used for disarming and shock & awe, not necessarily killing. They'd get a bunch of glancing blows to demoralize and bleed people out. Also, since people are probably wearing metallic armor, horrible and frightening sounds as it grinds against them. Sure, it'd break relatively soon but the point of a berserker is that their life span can be measured in minutes after a fight begins.

>>28583978
We can compare sources all night, but the point is they were on drugs. Poisonous mushrooms like Flusvamp (Royksopp) would drive them insane and release all inhibition.

Normans were vikings that invaded france, and when the French failed to kick them out properly, they grew fat and lazy.

Seriously. Instead of raising an army and kicking the vikings out, the French simply invented the castle, buried their heads in the sand, and let the Normans happen.
Then, of course, Edward the Confessor promised many things to many people.

>>28583959
Not so much 'died out' as 'forcibly killed off after the civil war'.
>>
>>28584261

You speak from experience then? No, you're right, the knowledge that you will certainly die within hours can do nothing for you on the field of battle. Eating those mushrooms right before battle, you would still have a sense of self-preservation and would act cautiously, not blindly charge into the enemy lines and cause as much carnage as possible to assure your passage to viking paradise. Alright Im done with the sarcasm, my point is a big, solid "negative" response.
>>
>>28584273

Some were obviously better than others, survived. Not all of them ate the mushrooms of death.

Is this even a thread about post-apocalyptic societies anymore or is it just a fucking history lesson.

A better theory is that it was a trance they brought on by themselves. Even today the same principle is applied by certain sects of Islam who, in their religious fervour, hammer knives into their head and dont give a fuck
>>
The French Republic still exists, but it is united in name only. Dozens of factions claim to be the rightful continuation of the former administration.

In Alsace-Lorraine and Franche-Comté, the descendants of the army forces have dug themselves in the old Ligne Maginot and hold the line since 200 years against armies that never existed, a culture of war where people are wearing uniforms from all the XXth century and the martial law is always in effect.

Their main rivals are the Forces Françaises Libres, based in the bay of Toulon in the hull of the Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier. Their ancestors escaped the onslaught by being in deployment overseas, and when they came back to the homeland they only found a wrecked and hostile country. Still, they posses a sizeable navy they have used to take a few cities all around the western mediterranean. Those outposts all hold recruitment offices for the Légion Etrangère, which is essentially bound to die in gruesome assaults to retake Marseille from the racaille.

The whole Valhalla thing does wonders. Otherwise, a combination of booze, anger, and macho posturing could have done it.

The conditions persist to this day. Like that Glasweigan security guard who broke his foot kicking a flaming terrorist in the nuts, after he climbed out of a burning vehicle full of explosives.

The countryside has become a place of death : Champagne, Bretagne, Normandie, Bourgogne, Centre and the Bordelais have become all but deserted. Some communities exist in the wreckage of the old agricultural infrastructure, and fiefdoms have been established from the castles in the Loire or in Aquitaine, but those are rare and powerless, and are constantly warring against each other for the Crown of France.

200 years of radiations and isolation have taken a relatively lower toll on the Massif Central. While life there hasn't changed much, cancers and mutations are widespread. But high up on their mountains, far from the big population centres and strategic objectives, the Old France is back from the 1800's, growing crops, raising cattle and hunting boars to scrap for a living until the radiation cloud (which never crossed the border) takes its toll.

The Rhône valley is a battlefield. The various fiefdoms of techno-moors and jackys are plagued by infighting, inefficiency and idiocy. Since Lyon's massive chemical industry exploded and the failures of the multiple nuclear power plants, the whole area is the most polluted and irradiated in Europe. The ruins of Lyon are vaguely ruled by the Commune, a military junta.

>>28585033
Paris isn't the city of Light anymore. The main target during the war is a wasteland. The vast Haussmanian boulevards are filled with rubble and the offices are forever closed.

Yet, people have survived, buried in the subway or in the catacombs, and the survivors have since tried to rebuild the civilization, or at least salvage what they could for a quick dosh. Or kill said scavengers, you get the drift.

But Paris is still a big town full of wonders, artworks, luxury items and architectural marvels, and life has started again around the big monuments. Merchant houses buy and sell everything from Rembrandts to slaves, mercenary bands are selling themselves to the highest bidders in private sales. But outside of the militarized and overly luxurious safe havens, scavengers kill and die every day for the riches of the capital.

But even in this lawless place, it's sometimes possible to feel the atmosphere of the old Paris when you walk the Champs Elysée at dusk, the Arc de Triomphe in the background, your radio blasting this old tune you found in the ruins.
