I put an arm around her. "You're still you in the end right? That won't change."

She blinks surprised at me, but then smiles. Rin stirs slightly to look at us. "So, you just used a barrier spell?"

"I don't think it would be as useful for in combat." Ilya says, rather uncomfortably.

"It's fine. Now that I know what to expect it should be easier to defend against." She says, yawning again. "..... You drained a lot of energy."

"Sorry, I had to be sure."

"Eh." She shrugs, and begins fading out again. Apparently that burst of activity was all she had in her for now.

Hey, since you guys are Nasuverse/History experts, I was wondering if you guys could help me figure out some possible servants.

If AC-Guy doesn't mind.

For reasons that as [SPOILERS], since I know some people involved browse this board, the servants need to have some form of religious connection.

It doesn't have to be christian per say, just.... Like Herc wouldn't count just because he's part god, but someone like Extra's Caster who actually had a more 'divine' presence would. I guess it's a connection to 'faith' somehow being important to the person or the legend.

Normally, I wouldn't have to ask for help but most of the obvious ones (Joan of Arc, Saint George, etc) are taken or locked somehow. You don't have to stat them out, I really just need a list of names.

[X]Talk to Sakura and Rider about Zouken
>>
Rin protests slightly as I help her back to her room, but doesn't actually resist much to the idea of being placed back in a proper bed to rest on.

Saber opts to stay with her, and Ilya follows to monitor in case there's any sort of complications. I return to Sakura, and she's giving me a look as I approach.

".... You want to talk." She says, Rider watching the scene only a few steps removed. Not a question, but I nod anyway. ".... About Zouken?" She asks, sounding almost afraid. I nod again, slowly. "..... What happened at the theater....."

"Zouken wants an ally. Or at least an enemy with an alternate agenda to yours." Rider states, and Sakura jumps slightly. "Apparently he's decided Sakura is the most likely target for such a ploy to work against. Possibly due to their history."

Sakura looks almost betrayed as she looks back to me from Rider. ".... Nobody has any idea what the red Archer's doing or what his goals even are, other than the fact that he's shown no interest in the grail itself. Avenger is planning something that apparently isn't good for him somehow, and the entire rest of the known parties are all allied with you." She explains.

"He wants to destroy either me or my power-block I've assembled, because I'm the most direct threat."

"I believe technically you're the only one with a stated desire to see him dead." Rider comments. "Everyone else is content to either work around him or fight him for the grail. For you it's more.... personal."

"Yeah." I say, looking at Sakura, and she almost can't meet my eyes.

"I didn't...." She pauses to take a deep breath before continuing. "I didn't realize what he was doing before. I knew he wasn't a friend, but against a mutual enemy like that Archer..... but he knew you apparently had plans there, and that we couldn't win. He'd either get Archer killed, or he would get me and Rider killed while drawing you away from whatever he's doing."

".... So the theater?" I hesitate, thinking my words over.

Shirou knows on a level. He just doesnt want to think about it.
>>
>>28591114
>[X] "Does he have something over you?"
>[X] "How can I help?"
We need to get this into the open so we can deal with it, but we also have to make sure she knows that we're going to help her, with or without her consent.
>>
"Does he have something over you?" I finally ask. It feels like I just ripped out a part of my jaw just saying it.

"Sempai?" Sakura gasps slightly, flinching away.

"No, It's not like that." I tell her, catching her wrist before she can run away. "I know you wouldn't want to hurt me or anyone else here. I trust you, but Zouken thinks-"

The slap catches me completely off guard. I let go, and watch as Sakura exits the room, staring mortified at her hand like she can't believe it hit me.

Rider's standing in front of me. After a moment, I realize she's blocking me from chasing. "Shirou. Deep breath."

"Rider-"

"Deep. Breath." After a moment, I close my eyes and try and calm myself as Rider continues. "I know that hurt, and we both know that hurt her, but it NEEDED to happen."

"Not like that."

"And how the hell was that going to end up any better?" She asks, suddenly angry. I look at her, and shes standing arms crossed staring at me angrily. I'm not sure how much of it's at me or at the situation. "It was going to explode. After all that's happened to her, before and after I came here, it was always going to be messy and painful when it started coming out. Maybe it COULD have been better..... but it could've been so much worse."

"How?" I return, more out of desperation for something to say.

"We let it fester until it comes out violently." rider answers, suddenly entirely too calm. "She kills Rin, or orders me to kill her. Or myself. Or herself. Or you, if Zouken managed to twist her into believing you were somehow the biggest problem in her life."

I can't bring myself to say anything, silently imagining the possibilities in horrified wonder. Finally, I start to vocalize... something. "So... now what?"

"I think I should go talk to her, and give her some space to come to terms with telling you exactly what the problem is."

Since when has this ultra-passive playstyle gotten us anywhere? Ever since Red Archer betrayed everyone, we've just been reacting to Avenger and Zouken's plans. Fuck that noise. Let's bring the pain to them. Let's channel all of Shirou's confusion, fear, and desire to help into shoving swords up someones ass until they look like us.
>>
>>28591640
>>28591539
These two, though we should call issei first
>>
>>28591695

>>
>>28591723
>implying you can plan around Broken Hrunting's falling like raindrops
>>
>>28591472
>[ ] .... That sounds right.
Ask Rider not to let Sakura beat over herself for the slap she gave to Shirou, if she's gonna do all the talking for now. Our presence may exacerbate her already fragile emotion.

Hmm. I guess co-scouting is out of the question then? We still need to do it though.
>>
>>28591695
Part of the reason we've only been reacting is because we don't want any Servants to go to the grail and help wake up the Angry Manjew that's still inside it, as well as not wanting to kill off Illya by turning her into the grail.

Last time we spoke to Merlin he said he was going to see if he could find a way to help Illya out, and throwing Servants into Illya might complicate that.
>>
>>28591818
We know that Merlin is looking into maybe being able to help Ilya. Who knows what he'll actually be able to do or when. In the meantime, we have Avenger doing Root knows what, and a Zouken willing to knock of Kirei to advance his plans. We have an (effectively) immortal worm vampire being so certain of his odds of victory that he's willing to risk bringing the church down upon his head. We need to disrupt their plans in an active way, if only to buy ourselves some breathing room.

Sure, sticking an Assassin in Ilya (if she's even the Grail) might complicate helping her. Zouken capturing her will render all of this mute.
>>
>>28591746
>Implying Archer didn't do that already
Zouken's still around

>>
>>28592326

A good part of her hiding it is her not wanting us to know.

God no. I'm just gonna go for >I know and hope AC-Guy isn't already writing or something.
>>
>>28592710
I'll admit, that scene was a bit awkward. I think the idea is that we totally know she's getting worm and penis raped routinely, and we just out and asked her about it. I thought we were going to be inquiring about whether he had some sort of blackmail material, but it apparently was handled like use accusing her of colluding with Zouken.
>>
>>28592710

>>
>>28592710
>>28592776

>>
>>28592776
Dark Sakura needs a very specific set of circumstances to go active, and we, as far as we know, haven't triggered those. Who knows what'll happen once Servants souls start flying around though. Zouken didn't have access to Grail parts to make Sakura a makeshift cup, but he may have found an alternative.
>>
>>28592791
She wouldn't kill Shirou even if she turns Dark
>>28592776
>>28592790
>>28592808
So she's angry because... Shit, I don't know! I've no idea how "What does he have over you?" could make her angry
>>
>>28592848
It implies we think him having something over her could make her turn on us.
>>
>>28592862
Well Zouken certainly seems to think thats the case.
>>
>>28592862
I don't really see that as a natural reaction given our relationship. Hell, given that we caught her sneaking out to do Zouken's bidding a night ago asking her what's up is a pretty natural course of action.
>>
>>28592862
It does? But that's not the point of that! It's not like we asked that to doubt her, we asked that to know what's the issue so we could resolve it
God damn, Sakura, why are you so hard
>>
>>28592862
>>28592848

Or at the very least, that there's something she's hiding significant enough that Zouken THINKS it would work.

Most of why she's panicking is because she probably has no idea how we might react to all of this, especially since we're known to not take kindly to other people endangering OUR people.
>>
>>28592862
>>28592848
Reading it again, it sounds like she thought Shirou was accusing her, like he didn't trust her. "WHAT DOES HE HAVE ON YOU"

Then she runs off to QQ.

Then Rider explains that there was so much pent up emotion with her that it was going to blow up eventually. It was just a matter of how; it could have been with her snapping and killing Rin, etc. But it was just from this so it was relatively benign.
>>
>>28592910
>But it was just from this so it was relatively benign.
>implying she isn't going to full Dark Sakura and eat Rider
>implying she isn't then going to eat Assassin and Gilgamesh, causing Zouken and Avenger to lose their shit

"I think I might already know what it is." I say slowly, thinking back. "I think I kinda always knew. Or at least known for a while." Rider doesn't react visibly, but I can feel she's waiting for me to continue. "Lots of little things, like how she reacted with Rin's failed tracking spell, or that dream thing..... or Rin and I followed you when you were going after Archer-"

"You overheard something?"

"Not everything, but when taken with everything else....." I shrug slowly, looking at Rider.

After a long tense moment, she relents slightly. "Crest worms..... are hard on the body. They'll kill any non-magus they might be implanted in in weeks to days, and even full magi can have issues coping. Sakura more so since she wasn't of the bloodline."

".... So what does that mean?"

"It means that for a while, Zouken wasn't sure she was going to make it, and took measures to ensure the bloodline would continue, even if she died. Even if she died young." My stomach drops. "Especially since with today's medical science, using magecraft to ensure a surrogate mother would remain healthy and pass on the correct traits would be relatively simple."

"..... So she's...?"

"I don't know the exact details either." Rider tells me. "But since you already knew....." She hesitates. "Don't tell Sakura I told you anything. I'm going to tell her you figured it out on your own, so-"
>>
>>28592952
I don't know, it might be hard to top 5 semi-functioning psuedo-grails mashed together, with oddball classes thrown in the mix and no noticeable presence from the church to reel it in if things go wrong or if we start the witchpocalypse.

...Actually, now that I think about it, all we're missing here are four more grails.
>>
>>28593162

"It's fine. I can keep a secret."

"When you say it like that-" She hesitates, almost freezing.

"You're doing it for her. The right choice doesn't always feel right."

She nods, and turns away back into the house. I sit down for a long moment and think about the entire situation.

Rin was sick, and might be permanently scared from it. Ilya says it's fine, but-

I'm going to kill Zouken.

Sakura just had what's probably her deepest and most secret emotional wound ripped open by someone she loves and trusts unconditionally.

I'm going to KILL Zouken.

Campsite in the mountains, body-puppeting super-assassin, Saber's regrets, Rin's pain, Sakura's fear, Rider's Confusion, Vampires and missing women.....

"I'm going to kill Zouken."

There's a pause, and then- "Alright, how?"

I think that startles me more than anything else. "What?"

"I mean how are you planning to do it? Walking in there hot-blooded isn't going to end well, you're going to need at least one active combat support since you have a Servant and an old intelligent Mage both to deal with. A Servant who's more powerful and active than any assassin should be, and a Mage who has to our knowledge survived point blank annihilation twice, so the usual methods won't work."

"You've been thinking about this?"

"Technically I've been thinking of the best ways to eliminate literally everyone." She says. "Though I've stopped worrying about how I would deal with you. Or any of of the girls here." She gives me a concerned look. "So you need to kill something that can't die, that's protected by a seemingly unstoppable assassin. The 'why' doesn't matter anymore. He needs to die, so we need to focus on the 'how'. So, let's define the goals. We need to remove Zouken from the war. Are going after him directly, or after Assassin?"

"... both?"

"But who's the priority? Assassin could get a new Master and do god knows what, and Zouken could be potent just because of what he knows, on top of whatever he's capable of personally."

[ ] Assassin.
[ ] Zouken.

Welp, good work anon. Spoiler tags were the Bike's only weakness. Now it knows that we're on to it.
And so, Shirou's life will end as it began. In fire.

>>
>>28593955
>What the fuck is even the plan?
We were asked what's the priority, Assassin or Zouken, and we voted

But in the long. Term. We need to find that mountain campsite with Rider and Pegasus
>>
>>28593955
The plan is simple we kill the wormman
>>
>>28593955
>What the fuck is even the plan?
The objective is Zouken.
The plan is still being planned.

Initiate with Rule Breakers?
Skewer him with multiple Harpes?
Burn the remains with Gram?
>>
>>28593969

>Both, on multiple levels.

>The Crimson Moon wasn't connected to any system bound to the planet, he was literally a being of unfathomable power basically on Earth with the cosmic equivalent of a green card maintaining certain standards on behalf of the spirit(s) of the planet.

>Summoning the Crimson Moon would be a plan that starts in the completely impossible end of crazy town and only gets worse from there.

Is Plan: Kill Zouken going to preempt Plan: Camping Trip?
>>
>>28594034
I really think we should put Zouken off until after we investigate the camp
If HF is anything to go by, he's pretty passive so we have some time
>>
>>28594056
>he's pretty passive
Yeah, he's been passively killing Kotomine, poisoning Rin, and trying to kidnap Ilya. Hell, we can probably just ignore him for the rest of the war.
>>
>>28594022
Made a contract with Gaia, immortalized in legend and lore, most likely considered a hero to Gaia for providing a hard counter to humans. Hell, he's also currently defeated for the time being. I don't see why the will of Gaia/Akasha wouldn't take his soul and immortalize it forever in the Throne of Heroes.

Just have Arcueid use her Marble Phantasm and use the Millennium Castle as a focus.

And in regards to crazy town, I believe we've been since thread 1 and gone only even further with each subsequent thread.

Gaia and Akasha aren't the same thing, he never made a contract with Gaia, or at least not one where he became Gaia's bitch and he hasn't really been immortalized in legend.
>>
Zouken was only truly killed by Dark Sakura in the VN, right?
>>
>>28594137
Not really. She tore her heart open and took the crest worm out
It didn't kill Zouken, but it reduced him to a blathering pile of flesh. He only died because seeing Ilya in Heaven's Dress or whatever that thing is called made him accept death
>>
>>28594101
Isn't the Throne of Heroes somewhere in Akasha, though?

As far as I can recall, at least. To be honest I don't really know the specifics of how the counter force has a direct connection to Akasha, but I guess a magus could exploit this with the ultimate goal of making a path there.

Oh wait, wasn't that was part of the original purpose of the Grail War? It's been a while and my memory's a bit fuzzy.
>>
>>28594137
The last worm was wrapped around her heart which she then plucked out and squished him. Even then he was still wriggling on until Ilya walked by and reminding him of his original goals.

>Going with what looks like the consensus.

"Zouken. Assassin's bad, but Assassin is the kinda bad we're actually better equipped to deal with in the long run. If nothing else, he dies when the war is over. He'll have to come to us eventually. Zouken.... We kill Assassin, we drive him even further underground. He's already killed Kirei, potentially bringing the Church AND the Mages Association down on our heads.... I don't want to think of what he might do long term if we made him feel MORE desperate."

"Alright, so we kill Zouken." Ilya says with a nod. "So then the 'how' is still on the table. We need to find out something that might work on him, and keep Assassin from stopping us from killing him. So, we need a weapon and a servant." She frowns. "Which might be the problem. Saber's not going to want to leave until Rin's recovered, and Rider and Sakura...." She looks at me for a moment, and then looks away. ".... yeah, I had a feeling something was up."

Time for him to come home.
>>
>>28594162
Yes the Thrones of Heroes is in Akasha but Gaia has no connection to them.

What Gaia is doing is like providing a reference. Someone like Shirou who could potentially be a hero but for whatever reason doesn't quite get the mark gets this boost from Gaia that gets him into the Throne of Heroes. In return, they must be counter guardians for Alaya whenever she demands it.

The Grail War's original purpose was recreating the Third Magic. It just so happens that it can also open a path to the root and can also grant a wish or two. This is mostly done by using the Einzbern sorcery trait. Which really boils down to 'throw enough magic at it until it happens'.

Oh, and the counter force HATES any possible path to the root. If anyone ever tries to get through to the root, expect to get raped by numerous Counter Guardians.
>>
>>28594221
>[ ] "There might be a way...." (Suggest Archer)

We don't even need to reveal that we are all buddy-buddy with him too, just remind her that the very first action Archer took was destroy Zooken's mansion.

>>
>>28594239
I swear I recall reading somewhere that while with 6 servants contained by the Grail there's enough magic to fulfill a wish, if one were to order their last servant as a sacrifice to the grail as well there'd be enough concentrated prana to punch a hole to Akasha, or something like that.

Like I said it's been a while, and my memory is a small bit fuzzy.

"... There might be a way to move now." I respond, looking at Ilya.

"What do you mean?"

"Archer is still out there, and I know he's less than fond. I don't think it would be hard to convince him to help me."

"Archer." Ilya responds deadpan, looking at me. "The Servant who might be an insane future you who wants you dead so he can zero-sum himself out of existence."

"When you say it like that, it sounds like a terrible plan." Ilya stares at me horrified for several seconds before I continue. "Alright, but it's an idea. I'm fairly certain I could talk him around into a cease-fire long enough to make Zouken dead, possibly Assassin too. It also has the added bonus of not needing to buy off a favor from one of our allies or waiting for either of the sisters to recover."

"Also you aren't risking anyone you actually care about." Ilya responds, somewhere between teasing and contemplative. "It makes a certain amount of sense..... but how to do it?"

".... I don' know."

"Well, that's the part to focus on then." She says, shrugging. ".... I'm surprised you haven't asked about Rin."

"You would've said something if I needed to know."

".... Trying not to focus on it?"

"I can't not focus on it. I'm just..... trying to maintain."

"Well, there is good news." Ilya says. "I can say with certainty the muck is gone entirely, and from a physical and magical perspective she should be back to her old self in a couple of days at the latest."

".... You seem to be excluding 'mentally'."

"..... It's not something you can tell this early on. I do know she's strong, mentally and emotionally. She's as strong as any of us. I think she'll be more or less fine.... but I won't lie and say I know for certain."

This is Ilya. She takes a lot more after her Dad than she'd admit.

Which reminds me:

>>28594403
"Where did you get the gun?"
>>
I give her a hug and apologize for springing that on her, and she tells me all she wanted to do was confirm Rin was alright for my sake. She's about to go check on Sakura when a thought occurred to me.

"Hey Ilya? Where did you get that gun?"

"From the giant stockpile in the shed. I found that book Dad left for you with the instructions and grabbed something appropriate to my size." She sees the look I'm giving her. "I wasn't sure how personal it was, so I didn't really read anything, I literally just skimmed the section on firearms to find something that wouldn't break my wrist if I shot it."

"So why even get a gun?"

"My magic isn't well suited to direct combat. The best I have on my own are my eyes, and they can be resisted. A pistol isn't that good against the average supernatural threat, but not all threats are supernatural. I mean, I'm one particularly strong willed pedophile from doom without it."

After she leaves to see how Things are going with Sakura and Rider, I give Issei a call. He picks up on the third ring. "Shirou? What's going on?"

"Have you seen Archer?"

"Not recently. Before I went to school he said he had something urgent to take care of, but he would be back in the morning."

"Damn."

"I'll look around when I finish walking home, see if he happens to be nearby, but I honestly don't expect to see him until early tomorrow."

He tells me he'll have Archer call me back as soon as he can pass the message along, as well as informing me that nothing weird seems to have happened other than Emi missing a couple days of school before she came back seemingly oblivious to the passage of time.

Ilya comes back, and tells me that Rider and Sakura apparently had some kind of argument, but now they've made up. She also advises me to let them come to me instead of crowding them.

Well, we don't want to tip off Avenger that Archer might not hate us anymore and therefore get him killed.

Archer has also openly or secretly betrayed literally everyone at this point, so odds of him getting killed for his backstabbing is better than decent.

Lancer finding out we can apparently talk peacefully and work with Gil/venger will do terrible things to our alliance.

Caster finding out about that will also do terrible things to our alliance.

This is under the supposition that Caster/Lancer would be available to risk their lives while their respective masters are relatively vulnerable.

This is under the supposition that Avenger wouldn't take advantage of the gathering of servants after Zouken was dead to nuke as many people as possible and get an easy win.

This is under the assumption that Gilgamesh would give enough of a shit to even show up.

And that's before we get into the logistics of taking all of our allies into a place with an Assassin who apparently has body-swapping powers and the ability to take a freaking Saber head-on.

And that's just off the top of my head, there's probably more and better reasons for not doing that as well.
>>
>>28601421
>all seven
Rider and Saber will be at the house. Rules of the Buddy System. The Shirou Alliance will only be sending Shirou to this fight.

So instead, we're going to go in half-cocked, despite the fact that we've "annihilated" this opponent twice, with our only backup being a future us, who has also tried and failed to hunt down and eradicate the worm.

And our goal has been stated to NOT be the destruction of the Assassin that will probably have little trouble tying us both down indefinitely, but the destruction of the near-immortal vampire that he's protecting.

Yup, sure, I can support this plan.
>>
>>28602233
Cool, glad you support it, because its happening and you can't stop it.
>>
>>28602282
At the very least, I'd suggest we invite Avenger/Gil instead of Archer. Avenger has more reason to be pissed at Zouken for his fucking with his plans. Plus, they don't have a track record of failing to kill him.
>>
>>28602422
You forget that both Zouken and Avenger are apparently unwilling to face Archer in combat. Here's the thing Archer can kill Zouken for good, two words. Reality Marble.
>>
>>28602422
That will take approximately zero seconds to blow up in our face. He's still our enemy, even if he's been more civil than Zouken.

Even if he doesn't kill us, if any of our allies see us working with him we'll have a diplomatic incident on our hands, which is code for "holy shit our alliance is self-destructing wait no Caster stop shooting lasers everywhere."

Because I guarantee that Caster and Bazette are still keeping tabs on things, and any kill-the-wormnigger expedition isn't going to stay quiet for long once a fight starts.

If Google Maps exists in Japan at this point, I'll just say that not once do I recall Shirou or anyone else currently in the house having a personal computer that could access such a thing.
>>
>>28610244
Public library?
>>
>>28610244
Bizarrely, you're right.
I don't think I remember seeing any computers in Fate/Stay, in fact. Anywhere.
>>
>>28610253
Maybe, but we have magic, so scrying would be a quicker, more reliable thing to do in this case anyways.

>>28610269
Suspension of Disbelief is a helluva drug, ain't it?
>>
>>28610284

>We have magic

We have SWORD magic. Rin's the only one who probably could, and she's indisposed.
>>
>>28610346
From the air, pepper the ground with swords. Then see through the swords to search for the site. No this isn't overly complicated/impossible
>>
>>28610346
Well, Ilya has some form of specialized scrying that she can use. Surely she can use more basic forms of that school of magic as well.
>>
So assuming we DO find the campsite, what next? Go there? Scout it remotely? Aggressive attack or attempt at passive tactics?

What if we don't? What do we do next?
>>
>>28610253
Public library or town hall would have that stuff. Guaranteed.

Lavar Burton would never lie to me.
>>

Apparently AC-Guy is having some kind of unspecified connection issues?

He gave me a call, see if I could do something, but given how I know for a fact he's lied about like 90% of what's going on I don't think I can run in his stead. Also, I'm in a bad mood for herding cats.

Java has always been a shit about updating. It leaves bits and pieces of itself behind, and you accumulate dead-end code.
I fucking hate the language, and I'm glad the industry as a whole is shifting away from it. I die a little inside every time my boss asks me why I don't "just use java."

Fuck you, you old fuck. I don't want to write two hundred lines of code to do something that should take twenty.

>>28611849

It was more Arc staying close by would attract all kinds of unwanted attention eventually.

Pretty much anybody who knew about her would be wondering why she was hanging out in a random Japanese town with a couple Magi, and anybody who knew about her and the Grail War would be sitting with their hand over their respective 'launch every fucking nuke at everything remotely nukeable' button.

Arc by herself during peace times is a curiosity to watch and be wary of, to most everyone who knows about her.

Arc getting involved in something important looking signifies potentially bad things but isn't, by itself, panic worthy.

Arc sitting next to a giant magical ritual not VISIBLY doing anything would slowly cause global levels of paranoia normally experienced by a Shadowrunner involved in a backstabbing contest at a dragon convention.

God dammit. I know we should talk to Saber, but we're going to be putting Rin at risk if Saber agrees, and we're going to be unable to leave without delay if we fail to get her to follow.

I'll go ahead and say that we should talk to Saber. This is not a time-sensitive subject of investigation. If we have to wait one more day, then so be it. We are not going to get killed doing something when we could have done it later without putting our lives in danger as obstinately.

You know, I'm not normally one to support non-action, but we have a Merlin consultation coming up tonight and half the people in the war are either down or MIA for the moment.

We should take the rest of the day, maybe spar with Saber at most, talk to our Wizard buddy and see how things look in the morning with a new perspective.
>>
>>28612483
i......damnit. there's zero chance of this being an ambush. the only reason we know is because merlin was watching us, and no one could possibly know that he'd know, and that he'd tell us, so if it was a trap, it's the stupidest trap i've ever seen.

there's no real reason not to go, but i have this thing wiggling at the back of my mind saying that staying back is a good call.

Us sitting around the house isn't going to help them, and we can't just wait forever. Zouken and Avenger are both actively doing bad things, and we're nearing the canonical end of the Grail War.

It doesn't help that we've had multiple days of "doing nothing" that span multiple threads and consequently months of real time. I reread the whole quest a while ago, and it's amazing how much more happened in the first half of the quest.

I walk back to Rin's room, and see Saber sitting nearby, watching over her. "Shirou." She greets as I approach. "I'm afraid Rin's still asleep at the moment."

"I was coming to talk to you actually."

"Oh." She blinks before becoming more serious. "Alright then, what is it?"

"I might have something of a lead to work with as far as my personal situation and the Grail is concerned." I begin, leaning against the wall. "Something weird off in the woods apparently a tracking spell aimed at me pointed someone else way off over there when I was here the entire time."

".... And this wasn't some magical protection on yourself?"

"If it was, then someone else made it. Which if anything, raises more questions."

"Indeed." She looks at Rin and lapses deep into thought. "We could move now, but....."

"Rin's out of it, and so that would leave Rider needing to defend three non-combatants."

"We could try and get Lancer or Caster to shore up our defenses, but that would involve inviting them into our fortress while we're at our weakest." She hesitates. "I also wouldn't want to use a Noble Phantasm right now either. In this state, it would either kill myself or Rin. If not both." She gives me a thoughtful look. "Why not take Rider?"

"..... Sakura needs her at the moment." I say, glancing in the direction of their room. When I look back I see Saber looking equally curious and concerned.
>>
>>28613111

"She couldn't be spared?"

"..... Not right now."

"I see." She frowns. "Well.... does it need to happen now?"

"I'm not sure if we're working with a time limit or not." I respond with an uneasy shrug.

"..... Well, you would either have to take me as I am now, or bring someone less trustworthy. As long as you don't suggest going out on your own or something equally insane, I'll trust your judgement."

"By myself?"

"If you seriously attempt to go into danger alone AGAIN I'll ensure you'll never be capable of doing it again." Saber states at a deadpan.

"... Rin's rubbing off on you then?"

I get a blush and a slightly undignified huff as she crosses her arms and turns away.

I see Rin frown slightly and roll over in her sleep.

>Actions?
>>
So I had meant to ask about this at some point, but it's mostly off-topic seeing as the two characters that it pertains to are gone from the narrative for now.

From 21st Verse
>"Wait, you know who Berserker is?" Ilya asks confused.

>"... Of course. The heroes you have running around are or were people, so there's still a connection to the world there." Arcueid responds, genuinely surprised.

So this seems reasonable at first blush, until you realize that in most versions of the myth of Cain, God specifically states that the curse is that the earth itself will forsake him (in retribution for his spilling the blood of his brother on it.) Mostly typified by the whole "if you till the soil, it will not bear fruit" deal, since the Cain of myth was most often a farmer.

The mark was a secondary precaution that Cain brought upon himself by saying that anyone he came upon in his wanderings would surely kill him, and God marked him in order to dissuade people from doing so.

Seriously, it's to the point where some versions of the myth literally have Cain end up fucking off the earth altogether and becoming the Man in the Moon.

Is this just another reflection of what Berserker had mentioned about the myth of Cain having been horribly distorted, or is the fact that Berserker seems to have divested himself of what is widely considered the ACTUAL curse on Cain something we should be worried about?
>>
>>28613125
The most interesting thing to me was in an Italian version of the myth where both Cain and Abel dabbled in sorcery, where there are two very interesting elements of the curse...

"Thou shalt be imprisoned in the moon, and from that place shalt behold the good and the evil of all mankind."

"And thus shalt thou be compelled to do that which shall be required of thee by the sorcerers or by conjuring, and if they ask of thee that which thou wilt not give, then the thorns shall goad thee until the sorceries shall cease."

>>28613120
Bringing Saber along is probably a good idea, whether or not .

If whatever is at the campsite in the woods IS connected to us like we think it is, it could easily be where Avalon is hiding out, and having her there to confirm that would be very useful.

And even if she's not up to using-Excalibur level, having her there would still help if we needed to make a tactical retreat.

also we need to build back some of that combat camaraderie. It's been a while since she's "actually" been our servant, after all.

After a couple of rings, he answers the phone. "Hey Kid."

"Lancer. I was looking into a possible lead, and I needed some help."

"More help than your girls could provide?" He asks, surprised.

"It's less that and more they aren't in a position to help at the moment."

".... O-kay..... WHAT is it you needed help with?"

"There's a place in the mountains that was apparently messing with scrying related to me. Given everything that's been happening I think it's related, but it's too far to go alone."

"..... Yeah, alright, good luck with that."

"That's a no then?"

"It's not that I'm not willing to help you in the general sense, but if I go my Master's alone. I could drop her off at your place, but given how paranoid she is, that isn't going to end well for anyone. Plus, you've got a clue and a hunch. Even if I was willing to drop everything right now to go check it out with you, I would need to get approval from my Master, and that's just not enough to go on." there's a pause. "I mean, if you get something more definite to work with, then maybe."

Just take Saber.

Saying that we're willing to take a tangentially allied Servant or go solo, but not willing to bring Saber isn't exactly going to do wonders for Saber's mental model of how we see her.

The only reason we'd want to leave her behind is if it's something we want to keep secret from her, and that's out the window because we already told her about our plans to go there. Even if she's not at full power, we're still better served with her than without her if something goes wrong.

Stuck in a corner eh.
Alright, looks like we have no choice.

>Bring Saber
I'm thinking she's at least stronger right now than when she was initially summoned as Shirou's Servant. Try not to get into fights and limit the prana usage.
>>
>>28613682
I vote for anything other than going alone/going with Saber. For now, I'll go with sparring.
>>
>>28613809
Is it always about someone's feelings
We need to be there and nobody is available, ergo we go alone
>>
>>28613682
Spar with Saber.
We haven't done anything about the clearing for several days, waiting a few hours before heading out won't suddenly erase any trace of what we're looking for.

Guys, that plot hook apparently isn't going anywhere. We could just have AC-Guy timeskip to tonight if nothing happens or something.

Not going at all is better than going in completely under-prepared, which seems to be our only real option at this point.
>>
>>28613682
Is it a video phone? Call Lancer again when we get there and find something interesting. Hopefully he can move fast enough to get there before we die.
>>
>>28613876
>>28613896
The issue is that if we're going to do it soon anyway, I'd much rather have it done before our next Merlin dream-meeting, so that we can inform him of what was causing him to mix up his scrying and get a professional opinion.
>>
So AC-Guy, are you willing to Bad End us because we can't pick a plan and stick to it?
>>
>>28613991
If he was then the Quest would've died long ago
>>
>>28613991
Hours of silence in anticipation of a story post only to be met by "What's the plan?" is worse than any bad end.

...But please don't try and take that as a challenge to bad end us as horribly as possible.
>>
Rolled 8

>>28613682
Okay, we sneak out and go alone. We can survive Saber and Rin beating us afterwards.

>>28613991

>I'll give you a bad end if a bad end should happen. I'm not just going to randomly rocks falls, tempting though it may be, and kill off the quest.

I like how they show concern with death threats
>>
We're staying in, right? Because I'm voting for not getting ourselves killed right now.
>>
>Going with what looks like the winning vote.

I return to Rin's room, and see Ilya there. "Hey Saber? Think we could get some sparring in? Not being able to do anything is starting to get to me."

Saber nods after a moment of consideration. "I won't be able to fight to my fullest capabilities, but that shouldn't be an issue."

The two of us head to the dojo, and grab the bokken and stand a small distance apart. "Ready?" She asks, and when I nod she advances quickly.

Well you said the quest has less than ten threads left in it. I honestly don't see how we're going to resolve ANY of our current problems in that time, since we seem to have a collective attention span of about 3 posts.
How would you rate our ability to react to developments? I'm pretty sure that's been our only saving grace so far.
That, and hilarious dicerolls.

This would've been a good thing to think about when people apparently decided to sit around playing with bokken rather than doing something proactive.

I manage to hold her away for a few moments, but she slips inside my guard. I try to get away from the inevitable sword followup, but Saber grabs me by the collar of my shit and flips me over onto my back before I can react.

"You're distracted." She states simply, staring at me.

".... That's why I suggested sparring. Try and take my mind off of-" the tip of her sword gives me a firm slap on the cheek.

"No, you're not. You want to be distracted, you aren't actually trying to fight. Get up."

I slowly stand back up, and she asks me if I want to go again.

I nod and take a ready stance, and this time I'm actually prepared. Trying to push it aside didn't help, so I stop trying to ignore it.

I think about Rin's condition and Sakura's reaction. About Rider's discomfort. I allow myself to focus on Saber exclusively as I barely deflect a hard blow that would've hit me in the face. I see her questioning look, and I don't have to hear her say she doesn't think I'm really in the moment.

I watch her, the way she shifts her footing as she moves from attack and defense. The way she adjusts her grip slightly between blows. Her fighting style seems brash and straightforward, but as we continue I notice subtleties I never saw before. It's not just a single heavy slice, it a high degree of power into a single blow- but the placement and timing of the blow are carefully considered. Her defense seems almost airy by comparison: There is no hard blocking, she simply turns my blade aside and lets he momentum carry her into her next attack.

I realize her style is reflected in her demeanor, with her calm grace and a hidden edge she only seems to show when it's absolutely needed.

I make a few hard strikes to her core, mixing it up with lighter parries and half-feints keeping her form claiming the lead as easily.

Her form shifts more defensively, and as it does I realize her eyes never leave my face. She watches her opponent, not the weapon, and I realize I should've been doing the same. She closes the gap quickly, forcing us into harder and harsher blows in closer. I try to change the distance, but she easily paces me, easily keeping me in where her servant's strength gives her an unbeatable advantage. I suddenly step in closer, feinting for a grapple, and then disengage to reopen the gap.

She almost buys it, but instead of moving straight back like I hoped, she takes a half step to the left and-

*SMACK*

-I find myself staring at the ceiling of the Dojo, holding a broken Bokken as Saber looks down at me.

"Shirou.... what was that?"
>>
>>28614755

"What do you mean?" I ask, slowing sitting up with a wince as I feel a new welt forming on my ribs.

"I mean.... that wasn't like how you normally fight. For a moment.... it was like I was facing down Archer."

"..... Is that bad?"

Saber doesn't answer, instead looking away and mumbling something about there being 'two' something. She then looks back to me and asks if I want to continue sparring.

As I think about the answer, I note that the last bout took us almost an hour.

[ ] Yes.
[ ] No (insert action here).
>>
>>28614767
[x] Yes. Try dual-wielding this time - the broken bokken, if it was split down the middle, should be perfect for practicing twin short swords.
>>
What time is it? Food time?
>>
>>28614767
[x] No. Ask Saber if Rin has spoken about Archer. Consider coming clean on Archer being Shirou from the future of an alternate reality.
>>28614806
Or we could just trace two new ones.
>>
>>28614856

Sure thing man. Seems like a good stopping place, what with our tenuous connection with Archer being unraveled here.
