The world of Acro is home to many peoples, but none so blessed as the Llannic. To them came Arlon, the Lawgiver, who sought to be the God to rule all of Acro. The Lawgiver bid the Llannic to found a great Empire the likes of which the world had never seen before, and in return he gifted them secrets and powers of the divine.

The Llannic embraced their new God, and from their resplendent home on the island of Llannius they set sail across the Stony Sea to the mainland. Acro had seen war and invasion before, but never on the scale the Llannic brought to bear. Their legions and fleets were peerless.

Even great kingdoms and cities fell before the Arloni Crusade, forced to submit to the rule of Llannius. Other gods, contending for the throne of Acro, were forced to bow or be destroyed. The Llannic pantheon grew by conquest alongside the Empire's new provinces.

With their greatest rivals toppled, some thought the Lannic might relent. Arlon proved a jealous god, however – wherever there were those who did not venerate him most highly, he would command his followers to bring them to heel. Even the furthest fringes, deepest woods, most desolate wastelands would be brought into the fold. Elves, Orcs, beasts, spirits, none would escape.

With all the world below bowing to Llannius and Arlon, the Llannic legions crossed the barrens of the North to conquer the last free peoples of Acro. The barbarians of the Everwinter Range are feared raiders, pillagers and slayers, but against the implacable and numberless legions of Llannius they stand no chance. Their gods are the primal spirits of the world, Ice chief amongst them, but their trifling mystics cannot compare to Arlon's piercing light.

Now the tribes gather for their last great offensive, uniting in the face of their coming doom. Llannius has established a port fortress in the wastes south of the Everwinter Range. Recognizing the danger a sea link to the rest of the Empire poses, the great warchief Ragnar Iceblood has lead the might of his people South to smash the enemy's foothold.

His offensive comes too late, however. An Imperial army has already taken the field, determined to prevent the Range Barbarians from besieging the port. The two armies meet at the foothills of the Range, with the Imperials entrenched and the barbarians desperate for victory.

But this is not the legend of Ragnar. This is the legend of his son, and it begins here, on this battlefield.

Shamed by the cowardice of his brothers, Beardbog retreats in the face of the Imperial advance.

It is a shameful and lonely march through the snow of the Everwinter Range for Beardbog, until at last reaching the hidden encampment of his own people, the Ingemar. The only consolation comes from the Imperial army choosing to consolidate and regain its strength before pursuing – an obvious insult, suggesting the Llannic may now destroy the Range tribes at their leisure. They may not be wrong, for what he sees on his march home suggests the other tribes have each fled back to their own hiding places to lick their wounds and blame the others for their defeat.

But there is another way. You know of your sister's witchery, of her consorting with the powers in the darkness below. Perhaps...

Beardbog is intrigued by the promise of power, and Maeva whispers to him of how the darkness below can let them steal Grandmother Winter's power for their own. With that, Beardbog could topple their father, reunite the Range barbarians, escape the North before the hammer of the Imperial legions falls upon them...

In the face of his sister's obstinence, Beardbog agrees to follow her east to the temple, if only to prevent her from causing too much trouble. The two of you travel east across the snowy plains toward the Eastshield mountains. There, nestled among the peaks, is the temple of the Ice spirits - the home of Grandmother Winter.

The temple is normally sealed, not meant for mortals, but Maeva conjures up the shadows from below which tear open the seals - a display of dark magic you had never seen before, and never imagined possible.

Maeva warns of the spirits inside, and how they will not take kindly to trespassers. Grandmother Winter herself is not one spirit, but her crystal heart is hidden somewhere within. She would corrupt that heart, if she can.

You step inside the frozen temple, carved of ice. In the foyer stands a naked woman chiseled from the same ice that surrounds you, and were the cold not so overwhelming her perfect body would enflame your passions. She, however, is less pleased to see you and warns of your fate should you come any closer.

Eager to let off some steam after a long day of slaying, Beardbog decides to take the ice spirit beauty. Maeva, familiar with her brother's proclivities, goes onward to leave him to his fun.

The spirit is feebly cooperative, and offers up some useful information in return for her life - namely, that her other sisters and their mother are within, and that they'll most certainly take revenge up on the whole of the Ingemar for this slight.

Once Beardbog finishes 'interrogating' his captive, she melds into the ice - disappearing. As soon as he has finished the extreme cold of the temple reasserts itself and Beardbog wisely dresses himself again.

The first chapter here is a self-contained story, mostly, so although there are plenty of branches it's nothing too crazy.

It'll probably mean long breaks between chapters, is all. I can spend two weeks working on this stuff in my spare time and cover all the branches that I might need for a single chapter, run it over the course of a day off, and then work on the next one. You're right that I can't really accomodate "quit your quest and join the circus", but I've got more wiggle room than you might think. There were alternatives here for refusing to retreat at the start, for fighting your father, for turning your sister in or refusing to go with her, and they're not dead-ends either.

You successfully trip the spirit, who falls on her back on the bridge. Like lightning, Maeva dunks the drinking vessel in the stream and pours the contents on to the spirit - the unnaturally blue water melts her away in mere moments, while she screams the whole time.

Soon nothing is left at all. Maeva remarks that the water is perhaps the key to melting one of the magical ward-locks on the heart.

The heat coming off of the fire spirit is the first warmth that Beardbog has felt for some time. Eager to get a little closer to it, he suggests the fire spirit should 'join' him. Sure enough, her gratitude for the rescue extends toward heating her hero up somewhat. Maeva, unsurprisingly, excuses herself.

While pressed together, Beardbog asks if the fire-spirit would like a chance to avenge herself on Grandmother Winter and join in on his adventures. The fire-spirit must politely decline, however. It probably sounded like a little too much commitment for such a free-spirited spirit.

As soon as he is satisfied, the fire-spirit puffs into a cloud of smoke and drifts away - but leaves, as agreed, a mote of fire behind. Small consolation for our hero, perhaps, but maybe he might see the fire-woman again in warmer climes.

You leap through the sigil boldly before your sister can speak. Without warning, you appear somewhere else entirely - no flash, no thunderous noise, no sense of transportation. One moment you were there, now you are here.

Before you, in the secret altar of Grandmother Winter, stands a great ice spirit - one of her daughters, a mother of the grandchildren you have fought. She bids you welcome, noting the rare honor it is for mortals to find their way so deeply into the temple.

>What now, sister?
>Why has the grandmother forsaken us?
>We demand her power!

Let's let the one with the plan take charge. Make ready to punch icy things.

Is she truly so craven and worthless as to abandon her children in their time of greatest need? If so just surrender the heart now and you wont have to die.
If she doesnt

Maeva tells you the crystal behind the Mother is the Grandmother's heart. If you kill the mother, she can give the heart to the darkness - once tainted, its power could be used by mortals.

But the mother intercedes, warning that you cannot trust demons to keep their word. Instead, she says the Grandmother has recognized your strength and will offer her blessing and power to your people - on the condition that you slay your sister, who has become a tool of the darkness.

You know not what to do...

>You expect me to slay my own sister?
>Maeva, how can we trust the darkness?
>I would slay no one if I can!

Yeah, let's not murder our sister.

We are no kinslayer.

That ice witch is probably trying to deceive us.
>>

...SLAY our sister you say...?

No but seriously. Perhaps try and get some more info on this darkness biz.
>>
>>28643130
>Maeva, how can we trust the darkness?

The ice queen will double-cross us for sure, I want to know if darkness will as well.
>>
>>28643130

>[something else]

There's one way out of this without being a kinslayer or a demon's pawn.

>No. My strength is in my will and arm, I need no more. But sister, you turned to foul and treacherous forces because you were desperate for strength. There is a strength here, pure and untainted, true to our people since time began.
>Sister, forsake the darkness!
>Winter, grant her your strength!
>OR YOU WILL BOTH DIE BY MY HAND!
>>
>Why should we trust you over the darkness? The darkness hasn't betrayed us yet unlike Winter which abandoned us.

We need more info on the Darkness too, but it seems suspect to trust the Mother on this

This is literally just agreeing to what the Mother says just not killing Maeva if she gives up the darkness...

also

except of course when it abandoned us
like today

Desperate situations demand desperate measures.
>>
Rolled 5

Ask more about the darkness and demons.
Ask more about why Mother abandoned us on this day.

Not enough info to go killing anyone. On the other hand, demons are generally BAD.

We must lay with the sister before killing her. Preferably by strangling her while laying her. We have the WonderCock that can banish all evil. If it does not purge our sister, she will die.
>>
>>28643336

You expected Winter to aid us of her own accord, a sweet granny protecting her darling children? We have not so kind a god. We earn her respect through her strength, not by crying out to her in our weakness. She does not send us blessings. We seize her miracles as we seize all else we need to survive the dark of the year.

Uncertain, you press your sister for details about why she would trust this darkness over the protector of your people for thousands of years. She says that so long as the Grandmother can give you up to Llannius to save her own skin, she cannot be trusted - but the darkness has no place in Arlon's vision. It must win or die, as you do. It cannot afford to betray you, as a matter of survival.

The mother reminds you that the Grandmother watched over your ancestors and your ancestors' ancestors. If you are strong, and you are, then you shall have her blessing as well. Do not throw away thousands of years of history for the easy path to power.

The two cannot be reconciled. Your sister was never a believer in Grandmother Winter, even before the Arloni Crusades - she has sought answers in the darkness her whole life. The Ice will not allow a worshipper of darkness so close to their champion, either. They would rather submission to Arlon over being tainted by the shadow.

Bearbog is trapped. His sister, his faith, his need for victory, his fear of slavery... what to do?

Big decision time, gonna give this one a minute

Orgy. Maybe.

Kill both. First, kill Mother for the earlier betrayal on the battlefield. Next, backstab your sister for communing with demons. Then speak with the Grandmother and attain her power peaceibly... and with her power, an ice spirit as a party member.

Kill Maven, Kill the ice Mother, Smash the Heart of winter, we must go it alone.

I... I am sorry. We met the empire head on in glorious battle, and Grandmother stood idle. If that is not a good enough sow of strength, then a sufficient show is beyond the abilities of mortal men. If I must turn my blade on The Darkness after slaying Arlon, I will do so without hesitation.

The Darkness may be a questionable ally, but it did not abandon us in our time of need, nor can it sell us out as Winter did. Plus we trust our sister.

>>28643476
>I must have the Grandmother's power.

If the Grandmother could truly resist Arlon she would have. Best to unite with a fellow deity against this foe.

I'm not sure if we can take them by ourselves but this one does sound tempting...

We're about to drop off page 10. Looks like we'll have to take the dramatic conclusion to a second thread - almost done now!

Well... we trust her to be a scheming bitch, but hopefully on our behalf. She WILL get in over her head some day, get into debt with the darkness too deep. But she is our blood. Better a warlock than a kinslayer. The ice spirit must fall.
