You've fight a hard battle and won a Pyrrhic victory. You've driven back the forces of Turtak, slain a giant mole-woman, and secured the dig site where the relic was found that turned you into a scorpion-girl. Now it's up to you to explore the territory and see if there's anything worth bringing back home to the pyramid. You're wounded and in pain, but still in good enough shape to move unhindered.

You look into the pit that was dug next to the ancient ruins. You see rubble, broken scaffolds, pieces of dead slaves, and the long gouges the mole-woman's claws left in the rock. There's a fifty-foot drop that you can see, and then it slopes down into total darkness.

> Find a torch and hold it in your shield hand.
> Get the injured Nakurtum to ride on your back and carry the torch
> See if those slaves you freed are still around, then bully them into carrying it for you
> Maybe you have good night vision now. Just crawl in and hope for the best.

The slaves were using torches before they were overwhelmed by the mole-thing, so you find one you can use in the tents. Nakurtum helps you get the flame started. "Go get 'em, kid. But not literally. If you see more giant monsters, running would be a good idea." You concur. Nakurtum patched you up with some clean linen wrapped around your human torso, but you're looking forward to getting home to some proper medicine.

You crawl down a half-destroyed scaffold and into the pit. It leads right under the old ruins. You see lots of rubble and fresh corpses, as well as one basket of old bones, mostly human skulls. You see the hollow where the mole-woman was hibernating. The slaves uncovered part of her while they were digging, and she later tore open a breach into the shaft big enough for herself to crawl through. The hollow where she was sleeping is made of carefully worked stone. Images of the goddess Ishtar are carved into the walls. Underneath the huge stone slab where the mole-woman probably rested, there's a small hollow with an uncut blue crystal inside, a little bigger than your fist.

> Take everything that might be notable, even the old bones. You can carry it home on your own back if you have to.
> Just take the crystal and the mole-woman's bow and armor, enough for the two camels to carry back along with the rest of your gear.
> Keep searching the pit and carefully sifting through rubble, even if it takes a few hours.

You dig through the mess until dusk, switching torches once or twice, then you search the surface ruins and all the tents. You find more ancient bones, some of which look too big to be human. You find some shattered pots that were probably in the mole-woman's chamber before she tore down the wall nearest to them. You find a single clay ball intact, like a drinking cup but with no opening.

The slaves are long gone now, so they probably took everything from the tents that was portable and valuable. They left some papyrus scrolls in one of the tents, though. The tent also includes a brush and ink, so they're probably fresh. The only survivors of your party are illiterate, so you've got no clue what they say, but you take them.

> Take the bones and a bunch of mundane equipment from the tents. Maybe some of it contains clues to Turtak's plans that you can't see right now.
> Just take the nice stuff

You take the clay ball, the crystal, the scrolls, and a couple of large ribs that might have come from a horse. You decide that the skulls are too creepy for you. The one surviving guard calls dibs on the mole-woman's bow and leather armor. You return to Bastard and the Spit Priest and break for the night after traveling a couple of miles away from the camp. You end up having to carry some equipment on your back so one camel can carry Pazur-Ea's body and the other can carry Nakurtum.

> "You can't call dibs on her stuff, silly guard! Better check yourself before you wreck yourself."
> Might as well let him keep it as a gesture of good will. Maybe learn his name, even.

You decide to let the guard keep the spoils he wants. You don't know how to use a bow, and the armor doesn't look as nice ever since you tore the gorget in two during the battle. You learn that the guard's name is Dadanum. He's a bit of a braggart, considering he spent most of the journey to the camp talking about what he'd do to Ku-Aya if he got his hands on her. He tries on the armor and repeatedly asks you and Nakurtum if it doesn't look too feminine. You think he's being too self-conscious. It looks fine on him.

You keep the thing in your hand when traveling and rest it in Mr. Clicks' cage when resting. You tell Dadanum that he has nothing to worry about; it's very pretty armor. This gets him red-faced and accusing you of tricking him out of his treasure.

When you return to Ligish, you cause the usual amount of commotion. You see some children scream and run from you, and some brave beggars ask for food or plead for you to take the streets back from the Footmen. You toss them the remains of your traveling rations. They were getting kind of stale anyway.

At the pyramid, you explain to the Blood Priest and his remaining acolytes about the battle and about Pazur-Ea's last request as they clean your wounds and prepare to stitch up your lip. The Blood Priest shakes his head. "It's been days - the blood will have gone bad..." An acolyte whispers to him. "You don't say! He burned away some of his own blood to cast a spell to preserve the rest of him. I taught him to do that, but I've never heard of a man doing it to himself. Must have been extraordinarily painful. Well, now we have some blood to work with again. And not just him. You must have made a friend at the Footmen's School. Someone gifted us with three prisoners caught by the night patrols. Their tongues were removed. Very curious. I have half a mind to try to grow their tongues back to see what their story is."

> Let him heal the prisoners using Pazur-Ea's blood.
> Ask if he'll heal you instead. You still don't feel so good.

The only reason they can get away with their shit is because they're powerful enough to bully the other War Schools.

A way to stop this without direct conflict would be making a balance of power.

One of the Pyramid Guards said they can't patrol the streets any more because the Footmen won't let them.

Let's offer to patrol with them.

Once we've established they can't bully us like they do everyone else, maybe we can reach out to some of the other War Schools. Set up some kind of alliance.

"Go ahead. I'll be fine."
"That's the spirit."

It will take some time to prepare the reconstruction ritual on the prisoners, so the acolytes continue patching you up for the moment. They give you some kind of foul-smelling poultice for your back, and one brave young female acolyte manages to get a needle through your lip and put two stitches in it to help it heal properly. It hurts like hell, but you grab at a table leg with your claws to keep yourself from twitching.

The Blood Priest manages to give two of the prisoners functional tongues. You decide to attend their questioning. They claim that they were caught breaking into a granary at night, and that they were dragged into a dark room and tortured by a strange woman, but not questioned. Torture might be used to extract a confession, and sometimes there are public floggings or grisly executions, but torture in private without an accompanying interrogation is indeed very irregular. They have no idea why they were tortured. The woman never spoke, and she was extremely good with knives and hot pincers. She'd done this before, they're sure. It was like second nature to her. She seemed kind of young, too. She wasn't human, one of them decides. In hindsight, they think it was odd that the granary had guards lying in wait rather than watching openly.

Though Nakurtum will have trouble walking for a while, she oversees you as you push yourself harder and harder. The pain means it's working, you tell yourself as you lift heavy stone blocks and bronze statues with your claws.
"They found another Adventurer," Nakurtum says as she relaxes under an awning and watches you on the terrace. "A friend of mine, sort of. Well, he used to be. We hadn't spoken in a long time. He claims that the commander knew about the sarcophagus and held it back for later, but didn't do anything weird to it."
"Why'd he stop being your friend?"
"Well... he kind of loved me. And I didn't love him back."

She tightens her frown. "None who loved me back. Not in that way."
You figure that Nakurtum won't want to talk about failed suitors. You wonder if she even wants romance in her life at all. She's a good friend, but you can't imagine her marrying and settling down.

You go to see the Blood Priest, who's in his workshop with the Gold Priest. They're inspecting the blue crystal, pouring powders and pastes on it and conducting divinations. "Oh, it's you. Good work out there. We really ought to send some men there to guard the site full-time, but we're just so understaffed right now. We need to bring more war schools over to our side."

2, we should go visit them and offer to meet the leaders. Greet each other and find out what the other wants.

"It's not ridiculous! Mr. Clicks teaches me how scorpions fight!"
The Blood Priest grumbles. "I need those for spells sometimes! If you need something like that, ask me first. You have an unhealthy disrespect for other people's property. I worry that I've adopted a child that no mortal can discipline."
It's neat that he thinks of you as an adopted child, you suppose. It doesn't excuse all the creepy stuff he does, though. "So let's talk about that dig site. Nobody's guarding it right now. And everybody wants it."
"Yes, I know. That cannot stand. Ideally, once our divinations are complete, we will be able to make another monster or two, then bargain or intimidate another school into serving us. The scrolls you brought back also have to do with acquiring centaurs. They have some very interesting properties I'd never known before..."

"The king wants to make a unified army, too. He's not so bad. Let's throw in with him and the Charioteers."

The Blood Priest mulls it over as the Gold Priest keeps trying to divine the properties of the crystal. "Everyone wants a unified army. The question is, unified under whom? Sharing power with him would be a dangerous game. I'm not sure we can control him and his people yet. He has a few magicians of his own. And he's definitely up to something."

"Well, we also have that bow. We could see what it's worth to the Archers."

"I suppose. Training archers is too much of a pain, so it's worth more to them in any case. I'll get an offer from them."

You tell as much truth as you can while preserving your integrity. "I got to talk to the king's people once before. They aren't planning to take anyone down; they just want everyone in the city to get along for a change. They just don't know how."

The Blood Priest strokes his beard. "You know, I've fancied that I might become king one day. It'd be hard to do a worse job than what we have now. If you could convince the king to come over to eat and pray like his father used to, we could take him hostage! Or kill him and throw his husk down the great steps!"

"Or we could just invite him over and treat him nicely."

"But what's the point of that?"

> Never mind. Maybe they're right not to trust you. I'm gonna go get that bow now.

"Let's say I do manage to make a deal with the king. Are we all right letting them know where the dig site is? I mean, if they're helping to guard it, they have to know where it is. We'd put guys there, too."

The Blood Priest has turned away and headed back toward his quarters, but the Gold Priest nods, "Yes, of course. I'm not afraid of them stealing relics. We have a head-start over them, and we can put the ones we have to better use. This is what we need right now. And the same deal with any of the other schools would probably be fine. Except the Footmen. I'm pretty sure that can only end with blood."

You thank Dadanum for cooperating and make one last crack about his girly armor. You take the bow out of the pyramid. As you go, you pass a stressed-looking Tabni-Ninsun pacing the halls. She's losing friends fast. Maybe she just needs her space.

You skitter out into the streets and toward the small but very classy Archers' School. Creeping vines decorate its exterior, and the courtyard they use for practice is purportedly one of the finest gardens in the city. A man calls down to you from atop the front gates. He's thin but wiry, with a shaved head and fresh flowers around his neck. "The Savior of the City! That's an interesting weapon you have there. I challenge you to a shooting contest!"

Maybe scorpion-people are master archers and you just don't know it yet. In any case, you can't lose face by refusing him. "Fine! What are we shooting at?"

He opens the gates and leads you through some halls lined with arrowskits and murder-holes. You emerge in the garden, where an arrow-riddled wooden effigy stands. His face looks remarkably like Ninurta-Nasir.

Lucky for you it wasn't a very difficult shot. You can't even pull the bow all the way back - you lack both the strength and the reach - but when you loose the arrow it manages to strike the effigy's chest.

You blush, but you don't hold his hand or anything. "We can talk about it. Is the commander here?"
"Of course! Walk with me through the garden."
He points out the garden's more exotic plants, then leads you back inside past some opulently-appointed rooms. They even have wooden floors, an absurd extravagance. Some similarly fancy men bow to you but don't make any passes at you.

He leads you up some stairs to what looks like an arsenal and fletcher's workshop. It's somewhat less fancy than the rest of the place, made for utility and not for entertaining company. There a wizened old man with one eye sticking too far out of his head is working on an arrow, dressed like a commoner and covered in sawdust. He squints at you. "'Eh? Wot's this?"

The man with the flowers explains, "May I introduce Buth-Shamash, our glorious leader."

Buth-Shamash leans in closer to you. "Oy! It's the whatsitcalled, lady scorpion! I saw you! Or maybe it was jus' a girl on a pony."

The fancy man laughs. "Buth-Shamash may appear plain and past his years, but he's a financial genius, and the bow is second nature to him."

"Heh, yeah. I c'n hit without looking. Not that I have mchva choice in the matter!"

You hand him the bow for him to inspect, mostly by touch, as you explain the bargain you want to make. You're about to offer the bow in exchange for a permanent guard detail to help the priests at the dig site.

"I'm the only one they have right now, and I'm not for sale. But this place we want you to guard has stuff in it that can make monsters. You want some of that?"

Buth-Shamash smiles and shows the spots where teeth are missing. "Now w'r gettin' somewhere. We get summof our men workin' on the stuff, makin' it, not just watchin' it. We take a cut urvry month. An' if they're good we c'n even sell summof em back to you." He winks with his big eye.

>>

Man, why does everyone want to do untrained magic? The adventurer guild exploded into a giant worm last time that happened.

I don't think the priests will agree to you making them, but I'll take your terms to them if you put them down in writing.
>>
>>28665946
I'm not sure it would be that useful.

It takes months of constant practice to be good with a bow and years to be a master.

Also, everything about us screams CQC.
We're built for melee.
>>
>>28665985
>Man, why does everyone want to do untrained magic? The adventurer guild exploded into a giant worm last time that happened.

That's a good point. We should mention it and warn them of the dangers.

A lot of people died and their entire School is either dead or scattered.

Do not play with forces beyond your ken!
>>
>>28666022
Our lower bits are melee yes. But our upper bit? Not so much. Having it able to hurt things as well would be a boon.

I think asking for archery lessons would be a good thing.
>>
>>28665902
>> Sounds fair. Let's have it put in writing.
>>
>>28666074
yes. The adventurer guild disbanded because of this shit.
>>
>>28666075
My main objection is the time investment. It'll take months of regular practice to use a bow with reliable accuracy.

It takes years to really master it.

That's time we won't be able to spend on other things.

Unless OP wants to handwave the the archery a bit and make it much easier than it would be IRL. That'd be a whole different story.

"Write down your terms and I will bring them to the priests."

Buth-Shamash barks for a servant to get over here, this time a shapely young woman, and has her scratch down the terms. He sometimes asks you for specifics on the location of the site and the nature of excavating the relics. You tell him as much as he needs without giving him enough to easily find the site himself. "They like it, have'm write it out in clay an' bring it back wth their seal. Then 'tll be 'fficial."
"Glad we're getting somewhere. How would you feel if the city had one unified army one day?"
"Hmm... 'd be good... fr urvryone else but us. We like clients better'n bosses. We'll go last, thank yeh."

We can't force them but maybe we can get them to think about it.

>Warn him that dabbling in old magic is seriously not worth it
Remember the Adventurers School! This shit is dangerous, be careful.

Maybe we could stop by the Slingers School on the way back?

Good point. No 12 year old would leave this place without asking to see some cool trick-shots.

"Just be careful," you say. "This stuff is really dangerous. You might be better off just selling us back your share of the relics. You remember that giant maggot that tore up the market?"
"Mhm, I do! I also 'member th' girl who killed'm. So far looks like even money."
You sigh and ask about his reputation for shooting. He strings a bow with a loud grunt, then complains about youngsters who think he's here for their entertainment. Without looking where he's shooting, he fires a green-feathered arrow out the window. That seems incredibly dangerous. You look out to the garden and see that he's hit the wooden effigy right in the head. With that he sees you on your way.

Be sure to be all "Yesssss" when you see that shot he fired.
Because Yesssss

Let's go get the priests the contract so they can say no to it because they don't want to give up magic goods.

Yeah, since that option's been out voted, I guess we can go tomorrow.

If it's getting late, we should find the captain of the Pyramid guard and see if they still want to make night patrols.

The Footmen aren't going to bully other groups off the streets if we're around!

As he escorts you back to the front gate, the fancyman recommends a little touch of warm color around your face to compensate for the blue under your skin, and also that wearing one's hair in bangs is perhaps unbecoming on a lady of your status. Truly, he is the fanciest of men.

You head back to the pyramid with the draft of the contract in hand, wondering how you might go about finding the Slingers' School. Suddenly, some dour-eyed street urchins form a line and block your path. They have cords tied around their heads that might be slings. Over your shoulder, you see other eyes on you, from rooftops, from back alleys.

"Savior of the City?" A voice asks. "Then who will save the city from you?"

oh, hey slingers. You were next on the list to meet. How're ya doin'?

Also, good thread, thanks for running, see you friday.
>>
Also, do we have a response to the "who's gonna save the city from you" thing? Because it's a reasonable enough question, we sort of throw the power equilibrium out the window. It's why we can even start to plan about unifying the military.
>>
>>28666875
Thanks Anu, see you firday.

My response for the start of next thread;

>"Savior of the City?" A voice asks. "Then who will save the city from you?"

"Urr, what? You have slings, are you from the School?

Can help you with something?"
>>

>Scorpion half makes weapons redundant.
Bow skills could be incredibly useful, allowing you to eliminate opponents at a distance who would be troublesome for your claws.

>>28667759
yeah, having some ranged chops seems really handy for killing the fuck out of wizards.
RIP redshirts
>>
>>28667819

>>
>>28664125
ugh, this is exactly what's wrong with this town.

When you have to rely on a Giant Scorpion Girl for diplomatic events because everyone else is an idiot, you have to wonder if the city is even worth saving.
>>
>>28668320
They're not really idiots, they've just got way too many shadowruns. They need to chill out on those like, a lot.
>>28667978
I really only counted the blood acolytes as redshirts, due to the hilariously literal nature of it.
>>
>>28666875
>"Savior of the City?" A voice asks. "Then who will save the city from you?"
"I feel confident the various military forces of the city would be sufficient, if it ever came to that.

It'd be an expensive victory, but that's why I was created - to counter other cities monsters in a manner that doesn't involve losing half - or more - of the conventional military forces with every engagement"
