You are in some kind of void. Thousands, millions, infinitely many of you are in this void. Mulling and turning and blending through one another, seeing through each other’s eyes at the endless void around you.

But there is a faint blue light in front of you, hanging in the void. When you reach out and touch it, it gives way like thick water.

You claw forward, pushing more and more of your arm through. By the time you push your other hand through the light there’s only a few hundred of you, and less every moment, all collapsing into one. Your head is next. When you manage to push your face through the surface, your memories begin churning again. You died. You had been living a dull life of unemployment, and then you died. And now you are here.

At last you push through the murk and fall through to the other side. You land on your hands and knees. Mud is dripping off your body and obscuring your eyes. “So another has emerged from purgatory.”

Someone else responded, “Will you kindly go fuck yourself with your religious bullshit? If you go now, you should might be pulling your head out of your asshole by the time things get rolling.”

You wipe your eyes clear as best you can as the two men continue to bicker. Before you is a room filled a handful of other people, all covered in the same mud as you. And on the far wall is a large computer screen overlooking the whole room. On it is a single message. “Something came up, brb”

You pull yourself up to your knees to look around. There are five other men in the room with you. Two are standing together on your left near a door. One is rather average looking with glasses, a beard that needs to be shaved, and an old wool coat. The one next to him must stand nearly seven feet tall and must be a body builder. Laying in the middle of the ground is a kid barely out of highschool, quietly staring at the ceiling. To your right are two men in middle age. By the looks of it, the one talking about purgatory is, was a homeless man and he is vehemently staring at the bodybuilder. The last man you recognize however, he sold you a used car a few years back. The police confiscated it while investigating a murder.

“So, where’s the complaint box?” you ask as you stagger to your feet. You take a quick glance over your body and don't notice anything strange, except there's no damage to yourself. You feel perfectly healthy, and your phone and keys are missing.

“We don’t got one of those I’m afraid,” the body builder says as he walks up to you, smiling. “Name is Joseph, welcome back to the world of the living.”

You stare at him as he grabs your hand and shakes it. “But I died.”

“We all did,” the kid on the ground comments. Now that you’re standing you can see that he’s twiddling with a cigarette in his hand.

How did you die?

Formerly, we had been a safety inspector for steel mills and such.

“Care to fill me in on what we’re doing here?” you ask as you wipe more mud off of your clothes. They appear to be the same clothes you had been wearing before you died. Same shirt, same jeans, except that you notice the zipper and button are missing from them.

“We’re waiting on everyone else of course, six people isn’t enough to do much of anything you know,” Joseph answers as you shake his hand back.

“Six people is more than you need to do anything but take over a country,” Hank, the car salesman, grumbles. He has been staring at the computer screen, not looking at you.

“More people is usually a good thing, if you have someone in charge,” the man in the glasses says.

At that, Joseph drops your hand and turns back to him. “Well said brother.”

“Another one is coming through the gate!” the homeless man shouts as he pushes you out of the way. You turn around and see that the wall behind you was the same blue light you had seen from inside the void, and there is a hand pushing through the wall, stretching it out like a gooey membrane.

“Oh, it is a girl this time!” Joseph announces, his voice booming through the room, as her face presses through the muck. The membrane finally reaches its limit and snaps, letting her fall through to the ground. She begins coughing and splattering the mud off of herself as Joseph strides up to her.

You may be a bit disoriented,” he says as he takes her hand and helps her up. You notice his brother rolling his eyes.

“Oh, I’m fine, really. Where am I?” she asks, looking around the room. “And why am I covered in mud?”

“It’s not mud, it’s just hydrocarbons and the like,” the brother adds.

“So you do know something!” Hank shouts, leaping to his feet and pointing at him.

The brother takes a deep breath and sighs. “I’m a microbiology major. I recognize primordial soup when I see it. We were probably constructed out of it, which would explain why we only have organic stuff on us.”

“But isn’t there iron and stuff in us?” the kid asks as he rolls to a seated position. The brother shrugs.

“You have nothing to worry about, I am Joseph, and I will make sure nothing bad happens to you whatsoever,” you hear the bodybuilder saying as you edge back over to him.

“Do you remember anything about how you got here?” you ask.

“Last thing I remember was getting in an accident on the freeway…” she answers.

“Did that thing just call us chucklefucks?” Hank asks a moment before the kid starts laughing.

“This must be a test of our faith. The seven of us have gathered here for sins committed in life, and now we are being tested by the devil!” the homeless man shouts, pointing at the computer.

More text appears on the monitor. “You think I’m the devil? ;_; And after I saved your life too. Such a thankless task this is, bringing you shitheads back to life. And why are there only seven of you? There should be thirteen.”

“Don’t ask us, how the fuck would we know?” Joseph’s brother asks.

“Right! Well, if you’re already that low on people, another one missing won’t matter much,” the computer says. You notice Joseph step between the girl and the homeless man. “You really are alive right now,” the computer says.

An explosion rips through the room, blood splatters everywhere as the sound sends you reeling. Something had detonated inside the homeless man’s chest and ripped him in half, painting the room in his blood.

“The name’s Huey, shortened from Heuristics and shit. I worked very hard on bringing you all back to life, so don’t piss it away. Now who’s ready for work?” the computer asks as the girl, the kid, and Hank all start shouting.

“What did you put in my chest?” Hank roars as he rips his shirt open to reveal a metal plug in his sternum. You quickly follow suit and find one in your chest as well. You look around at everyone else in the room, everyone seems to have one.

“Just a bit of insurance for myself. Nothing big, it’s only like five grams of high explosives. Calm your tits,” Huey responds.

“That’s apparently enough to kill us though, why the fuck should I be calm?”

“Because your life is mine. I saved it, I get to take it away, until you pay me back the life I gave you. And I obviously can’t let you go spilling secrets, so that’s there to make sure things stay nice and quiet about me. If you want it out, you’ll have to pay me back all the lives I’m owed,” Huey responds.

“So what, we have to kill or something?” you ask.

“Duh, no shit. How the fuck else do you pay back lives? Souls aren’t worth matter bro. If they were I wouldn’t be bringing people back to life. Kill 42 people for me, and you all get to go home. Simple as that.”

Joseph lunges forward. “Forty-two? It should only be thirty-seven!”

“Chill out Broseph. You know the amount rolls up every time I bring another person back to life.”

“Stop, slow down, please. Could you explain that in detail. Holy shit, Huey. What the fuck? Name of the game. Details, dude,” you ask as Joseph growls and slowly walks back to the wall.

“You dense or something? I could have sworn I kept all of you at 1. Anyways, for the stupid among you, let me break this down.
1. You all died
2. I brought you back
3. I now own you
4. You want out, you play the game
5. The game is murder
6. Kill 42, and you get to go
7. And there will be prizes! /fireworks
Did you get that? The nine of you should be able to manage that.”

You glance back and see two more people pushing through the membrane. One person on the left is walking through, rather than using their hand, and the person on the right is falling through. When they break through you see that on the left is a large Australian man who doesn’t seem to be at all disturbed, but on the right is a girl, college age, and all of her clothes have been torn off.

“So you want us to just go murder random people or you’ll blow us up?” Hank asks, ignoring the new arrivals.

“What? No fuck that. Why would I do that? I have like a huge fucking list of people I want dead. Why would I waste your kills on random people when I could be offing people moving in on my turf?”

“>_> Cuz your corpse was unrecognizable. Do you have any idea how fast I’d be found if clones started walking around?” Huey explains.

“I’m a clone?”

“No shit, what the hell did you think the vat was for? I got a couple more back there too. So I hope you fucks are ready to head out, because I’m getting bored. I hate explaining things,” Huey says just before the new girl screams. You snap your head around to watch as she pushes Joseph away and runs to the corner of the room.

“Just one star? What the fuck Huey? I could do this myself,” Joseph’s brother says as he walks up to you. Out of the corner of your eye you see the first girl run over to the half-naked one and start comforting her.

“Jesus Ricky, haven’t you heard of a tutorial? Now are you ready for the armory or not? You have one hour, and the door will lead you to an abandoned house a few doors down,” Huey says as a door to your right opens up, revealing a room filled with racks of weapons.

In the armory is a long collection of firearms you haven't seen before, but they seem to have the same general build.

>Pistol
>A larger pistol
>Rifle
>Shotgun
>A longer rifle

There is also a collection of body armors
>Steel
>Synthetic
Body armor covers your torso, and each of your limbs independently.

There are also thirteen smartphones on a table.

In the back corner you find that there is a locked cabinet marked FOOF, but there is no apparent way to open it.

Joseph and Richard have both loaded up with shotguns and the larger pistol. Hank forced his way in, grabbing a rifle, and the kid in the hoodie is eyeing up the pistols.

What do you choose as your loadout?
>>
>>28678651
Gantz Quest?
>>
>Shotgun
>Small Pistol
Best bet for the untrained. Besides this job is dogs. A close range weapon is a good idea. However having a backup weapon is a good thing.
>Synthetic
Eh I have no idea the pros and cons of either but going around carted out like a 1700s footsoldier is a bad idea.

Grab a smartphone. Sure its probably bugged but so is our chestbomb.
>>
You grab the synthetic armor and pick it off the rack. Holding it up to the light you can see thousands of strands running through. Stretching it proves it to be rather pliable, but the color quickly changes to a myriad of yellows and reds crisscrossing the fabric. You start stripping out of your clothes to put it on under as Joseph and Ricky open the door out of the door out of the armory, there is a large blast of light for a moment, but that quickly fades.

“No one’s getting in a fight without me!” Bruce shouts as he barges into the armory, nearly knocking you over. He grabs one of the pistols off the rack and rushes to follow the group.

“I told you people to stay behind. You’ll only get in our way!” Ricky barks back at him. All of them have already left the armory by the time you get into the armor. You snatch up a shotgun and one of the smaller pistols. You can’t find any spare ammunition though.

I had better explain this while I can

The basics of combat, that even a rookie like you knows

Success is determined by opposed 2d6+modifier. Roll as many times as you like, I will randomly choose one of them with a dice roll.
Location damage is a thing
As a weak human, you have no modifiers at the moment.
>>
>>28678651
>>28678867
"Doesn't this all seem simultaneously excessive and inadequate? I mean, this synthetic armor's nifty- non-Newtonian fluids I'd guess?- but, uh, is arming random cloned saps with killplugs and small arms really the most efficient way to go about coldblooded murder? Seems asinine. Unreliable. And exposed in its ridiculous unsubtlety, for that matter."
>>
>>28678958
has a point. Those chucklefucks are going to learn the term friendly fire with the way they are acting and I have no desire to be the chump who gets shot.

So we gotta ask for a different target.
>>
Rather than follow the group, you double back to the first room. The two girls are huddled up in the corner together. “Hey, are you two alright? Is she alright?” you ask carefully. The half-naked girl has her face buried in her hands. The first one, who’s name you never got, pulls away from her to walk over to you.

She leans over to you to whisper in your ear. “She was raped, I’m going to get her home, call the police or something.”

“I don’t think calling the police is a good idea, what with the bombs,” you whisper back.

“Then what the hell are we supposed to do?”

“Let me talk to Huey, we’ll figure this out,” you respond before walking over to the computer screen. “I have some questions.”

“Sure, I don’t mind answering them, but you only have like 54 minutes left you know,” Huey says.

“I want to know some of the rules. What happens if we kill other players? If we don’t kill your targets? If we refuse? If we kill forty-two people the bomb is gone and we get to leave? What if I let the others do all the work?”

“Fuck, hold on. That’s a lot of fucking questions. Let’s see, I don’t actually enforce any rules on inter party conflict, that usually resolves itself what with the vote. If you don’t kill the targets, you’ll just have to try again another time, but if you refuse I’ll kill you and get more people. You’re disposable. And I don’t really have a problem with you sitting back if you want to. If you make a habit of it though, I may have to put you on your own kill clock.”

“So the reason you’re using us instead of professionals is because we’re expendable?”

“Bingo.”

The two girls are about to leave, any last questions? Who do you join?
>>
>>28679108
Get the girls to stop leaving for now. Tell them if they run they die.

Then get a different target from Huey. If they are willing kit them up. Giving the girl a weapon to defend herself with and showing her she does have power will help since I doubt there are any counselers amongst us.

They slow to a stop. “I guess we’ll wait in here then, I don’t want to see that corpse any more. You’re going to go kill the man then?”

You nod. “Maybe, I’m playing it by ear.”

“Alright then, my name is Bridgette by the way.”

“Alice,” you respond with a casual smile, before turning back to Huey. “Huey, can you give me a different target or something? And who are these people anyways?”

“I give you the targets as I find them. They’re just scum though, don’t worry about it. Next target will be in like a week or so, maybe less. I might flush a few out of hiding with this.”

“I’m not going to just kill innocent people for this, I’ve been to the otherside, this is just entertainment now.”

Bridgette and the other girl are sitting against a rack, you notice that she grabbed one of the larger pistols. You make eye contact with her for a moment as you pass, exchanging a grimace and a nod.

You walk outside and look around for a moment. You don’t quite recognize where you are, but it’s the middle of the night. To make things worse, there are no lights anywhere, save for the moon. The area is residential, and you can hear people shouting at each other, but there is no power anywhere. “What an unlikable bastard!” you hear Bruce shout. Off to the side you see that a wooden fence had been smashed apart. A moment later Bruce walks through the gap, brushing massive splinters of wood off of himself.

Before you can properly greet each other, the rumble of dozens and dozens of small explosions rips through the dark street. A few houses down, in the blaze of fire, you see your four comrades unloading their guns on a house, with no discrimination.

“Indeed, this is hardly respectable, attacking int eh middle of the night with no warning. They’ve nearly destroyed his entire building,” Bruce responds as you walk up next to him. You can hear Ricky barking orders to spread out and confirm the kill.

Without approaching, you uncomfortably check that your weapons are loaded and watch. There is a pause, a moment where it seems nothing will happen, then you hear a clicking screech. Something blurs through the air, too fast for you to see, but you see the effect. Joseph, Hank, and the kid all go down screaming, writing in pain. “We have to help, this isn’t some innocent, come on!” you shout as you run down the sidewalk. The creatures haven’t seen you yet, allowing you to get behind a rusting out car, the only cover nearby. There are four of the creatures, hulking dog like creatures with their skin peeled off and long tails flicking around through the air. You can see large bloated sacs in their necks.

They stop to sniff at the kid and Hank, who are still screaming in pain as their flesh sloughs off their bones, boiling against the concrete and fouling the air. Bruce appears right beside you, catching the eye of Ricky. He waits just a moment, for you to attack and catch their attentions before attacking with you. You wildly fire the shotgun at them, and as luck would have it you strike one in the front shoulder, the explosion from the round ripping its entire limb off. The creatures jumps away, but Ricky manages to blast off the back leg of another.

The same clicking screech is coming from inside

You get a glimpse of the hound you shot thrashing about, spilling blood from its neck before the other three attack. Two of them face you and Bruce and belch streams of acid at you, but you manage to drag him behind the car with yourself, and the compound splashes against the vehicle rather than across yourself. You can hear the paint on the car burning off, and the tires pop and deflate, collapsing the vehicle to the ground.

However they’re attacking you seems to have lulls between when they’re able to fire. When you peek your head above the cover again, you find yourself staring into the maw of the demonic hound.

You pull your shotgun around as it snarls and lunges at you. Its maw clamps down around the barrel as you fire. Its eyes grow wide as it feels the slug rip down its throat. A moment later, the slug detonates inside its throat, ripping its neck open, and Bruce puts the coup de grace on it. Acid splatters out from the explosion, spraying across you.

You shout and stumble back as your clothes burn off, revealing the synthetic armor beneath, but luckily you watch as the fluid threads inside burst and swell and neutralize the acid. You can’t help but laugh that you’re alive from that, and one of the beasts is dead.

Looking beyond the carcass, you see as Joseph and Ricky force the three remaining beasts back. But then Ricky dashes forward, discarding his shotgun. He snatches up Hank’s rifle as he pulls out his pistol and swings it between them.

The three hounds are on the defensive now, backing away.

“Try to get to some cover!” you shout as you fire more slugs at the beasts, but at the increased ragne you are unable to hit anything. Bruce is standing next to you, mostly exposed, and laughing as it he takes shots at the creatures. Joseph only had time to take one shot before starting to crawl away, his entire left body destroyed.

Then you see why the one set of pistols was larger than the other. They’re machine pistols, fully automated, and each round is explosive. Ricky sends a sweep of explosive fire around at the beasts, forcing them to jump back, closer to the home, but not actually injuring any of them. Then, discarding the pistol, he turns and sprints back towards the armory.

Then you notice the people. There are dozens of faces crammed in windows, peering out at you, watching.

You hear each of the hounds gag and belch acid out into the air. Joseph screams and roars in pain for a moment before blood chokes his throat. Ricky shouts in pain as acid severs through his right leg. And the last bolt of acid splashes over the car, catching both you and Bruce in the arm. You remain protected by your armor, but blood begins spraying across you as Bruce growls in pain. Looking over your shoulder, you see that all of the muscle on his upper arm has been destroyed.

“Dirty rats!” he roars as he pushes back up. Three explosions rip through the concrete and the hounds howl. The bombs in the chests of Joseph, Hank, and the kid all detonated. Gunshots start blasting out of windows as well, but where they are firing you are unsure.

You pass your shotgun over to your offhand and walk around the car as you pull out the pistol. “Now this is just cruel,” Bruce comments as you start shooting the beasts. None of them can stay on their feet, and when one does manage to lunge up, Ricky shoots its head off.

“You’re one to talk, you’re missing an arm,” you comment as you put the last round in, severing a head off. “And they killed three people, they’re monsters.”

“I’m going to need some kind of treatment for this. The shock is starting to wear off,” he grumbles as he slides down against the car, holding his arm and trying to not look at the exposed bone where the flesh is still rotting away. “But that is some fancy armor you’ve got there.”

“It was available in the armory, you should have gotten some,” you say as you walk over to the beasts head and pick it up by the mutilated ear. The thing is massive, far larger than your own head with fangs to match, but it’s certainly dead. The acid glands are still mostly intact in its neck, so you toss it as hard as you can into the middle of the house. “Watch my back!” you shout before taking a few shots from a distance and destroying the head, misting the acid through the air.

At last, Barry reveals himself. If he was ever human, it’s hard to tell now. The acid is melting away his skin, and his spread of muscles along is frame is hulking and disgusting. And he’s glaring you down.

Barry Bob twists out of the way, knocking the pistol to the shot and sending Bruce’s shot wide, but forcing him to let go of you. You let the adrenaline take hold as you roll off the car to grab your shotgun again, turn and blast him in the chest nearly point blank. The shot puts a cavity in his chest and staggers him long enough for Ricky to shoot him in the shoulder.

But he doesn’t go down. He starts sniffing the air, turning between the three of you, uncertain. Then a fourth gunshot blares down the street and an explosion hits a house a hundred meters away. Seems that someone took a shot and missed.

“Enough of this gun nonsense,” Bruce says as he drops his pistol to the ground and beckons Barry forward.

You can’t help but laugh before shooting again, but you’re in so much shock that you can no longer aim straight. Ricky buries another round in the same shoulder, but doesn’t manage to stop him before Bruce lunges forward. You hadn’t noticed, but apparently Bruce had pulled a knife. With a gleeful laugh he stabbed it into the beasts arm, knocking the both of them to the ground in a grapple.

The two of them tumble, rolling over one another in a spray of blood, until Bruce gets on top with a handful of his arm and snaps it back, shattering the shoulder joint. In a burst of strength, Barry flips him around again, only to get stabbed in the leg. But the advantage is short lived, and Bruce is soon tossed aside. Bruce laughs. “You ain’t got shit on me.”

Barry is open, do you take the shot or let Bruce reengage?

“Get him you crazy Aussie bastard!” you shout as you shoot the beast man’s leg, sending him down to his knee. Ricky gets another shot in on his back, just before Bruce tackles him back to the ground. Even when you had one more arm than I did you couldn’t stand a chance, now that I’ve broken that one, what chance do you think you have?” he shouts as he raises the knife in the air over and over, stabbing the creature’s chest. Tears of relief are falling down your face by the time he plants the knife through Barry’s eye, finally killing him in the blood soaked rampage.

Bruce throws his arms in the air and whoops.

You see a few cars roll up down the road from you, their headlights the only artificial light you’ve seen all night.

Then your shotgun explodes, ripping your arm off. Your pistol is next, then all the guns of your fallen comrades.

Then your chest.

The moon rolls past you as your head soars through the air.

You come pushing out of the membrane, moaning and screaming, the pain of death still fresh in your memory. Bridgette and the other girl are standing in the doorway to the armory, Ricky is already in the room. “Bring him back!” he roars as he run over to the computer monitor. “Bring him back bring him back bring him back!”

“Chill the fuck out Richard, he’ll probably win the vote, jesus. -_-‘ Let everyone get out of the vat first,” Huey says as Ricky drops to his knees. “Now where the hell is that crazy bastard?”

“Why am I alive?” you ask as you crawl to your feet, checking yoru chest to find a fresh explosive charge.

“Because it’s super easy to bring you back to life if I know when you die and where. It’s just cleaner and harder for me to get caught. You’ll get used to it, or not. I don’t really care,” Huey explains. “You should be thanking me, you no longer have a broken leg.” You look down to confirm, your body seems to be in perfect health. “Ah, there he is.” You turn and see Bruce fighting out of the membrane, throwing punches and swearing.

“What the in hell was that?” he demands when he finally rips out.

“Alright! Time for the appraisals!

“Uh, so Huey, about the armory, care to explain the difference between the steel and synthetic armor?”

“Fuck you you cunt! You’re going to bring back some pot somking dipshit over my brother? Do you have any idea how many times we’ve survived this game and come out on top? We’re better than you!” Ricky roars as he leaps to his feet.

You start to stammer a response when Huey starts dinging and confetti dumps out of the ceiling from somewhere. “Stone it is! He’ll be out of the vat in a second. No Brochacho for you Ricky,” Huey announces. You put your hands up in the air as Richard snarls at you. “Now, on to the next order of business, all of you who survived get a prize, except you Sarah, do something next time. Anyways, tell me what you want upgraded about your body and I’ll make it happen. Organics are easy like that. Richard, where are you going?” Huey says as Ricky pushes the two girls aside and storms into the armory.

You and Bruce exchange a look and peer in after him. “Fuck all of you!” Joseph roars as he sticks the barrel of a machine pistol into the room, tears running down his face. Quicker than you can react however, his chest explodes. The girls scream as you stare in disbelief.

“What the fuck was that? What the fuck Huey?” You shout, still staring at Richard’s corpse.

“You do not fuck with the rules. Now someone is going to have to clean that up, because I don’t want ants in here,” Huey responds as Bridgette and Sarah flee to the opposite corner.

“I hope you’re not expecting us to do that,” Bruce declares as he walks up to the monitor.

“You people usually do. I may not want ants, but you don’t want to be stuck in here with rotting corpses. Although it was actually him that usually did the cleaning. Maybe if I brought him back on the condition that he cleans up, then send him on a fake mission and blow his ass in the ocean? That could work.”

“You are one fucked up person,” Bridgette comments.

“Who said I was a person???? Now are you going to request your upgrades or not?”

“We’re not changing our bodies, we’re leaving,” Bridgette declares as she grabs Sarah’s hand and pulls her toward the armory.

“Gimme some tougher skins on my arms. It’s rough having an arm burnt off like that. Being stab proof would make fighting quite a bit easier,” Bruce announces.

“Sure, that’s easy enough with some protein weave. Alice?”

The others are nowhere to be seen you so you wander around back to your kitchen, and find the two girls sitting at your table. You stare at them for a moment before asking, “Is there something I can help you with?”
