You look over the small plot of land the man who had been more of a father to you than your real one had been. The funeral was a small afar with only a handful of the villagers actually showing up. It is close to the harvest festival and your teacher was a very solitary man, so it couldn't be helped. You hear a few of the people left after the small service mulling about, speaking in hushed tones likely in respect for your mourning.

"-in the southern woods, yes? He was hunting a life eater, wasn't he? Is that what killed him?" The village chief, a stoutly man with small close shaven white hair left only on his sides asks, drumming the large book which hold the rites and burial standards required of those who serve the twelve.

"No, a life drinker would have ripped his soul from his body. The fact he made it back before falling over means he was poisoned. Likely a viper, or perhaps a taintbloom." A young voice replies, which you identify as Thomas, a semi professional friend in that you are both apprentices.

Were both apprentices.

"More likely those foul driders." An older voice spit out full of disgust, Thomas' master Julius replies followed by a wheezing cough.

"An experienced hunter like him getting taken out by a drider? They are certainly vicious, but no where near smart enough or skilled enough to get the drop on him. Plus his equipment, all that enchanted gear he left with; he came back with both it and his crystals missing." The village elder replies.

"Unless it was that damn webweaver. I told you we should send a party after her, send every last vanguard and the rangers after her, hunt the bitch down. Now it's too late, our vanguard is weakened and the only ranger left is..." He trails off, and you feel his gaze settle on you.

>>
"Come now, there is no need for that. Look, we will have to work hard until they can fill the shoes left to them. They are the only ones who know the art, unless you feel willing to strap on some leather armor yourself." The chief says and you hear Julius about to reply when he goes silent, his own choking gasp cutting him off.

You tilt your head slightly, keeping your back to the group, as you hear the sound of heavily booted feet stomping up the slope to the graveyard. You feel a massive hand grip your shoulder, causing you to slouch slightly despite no force being pushed onto it. You glance over at the grey skinned hand before up the massive forearm to the one it belongs to. Mr. Urumesh, a quiet fellow who lives by the outskirts of the village with his horses. He is a massive man, nearly 7 feet, with small dark eyes, and copious, thick slabs of muscle lining his everything. His thin wiry black hair sits under some sort of strange hat with a thick fur brim and a small metal ball on top and he has in his other hand a small leather pouch.

"Tough." He tells you simply, his voice guttural and deep.

He walks over to the small headstone and places the small pouch down with several small totems. You remember hearing from your master that Mr. Urumesh was from a group of people called the Denarsomething or other, and that there was a reason Julius always seemed so tense around him, but you honestly could not remember what it was. All you know is that in exchange for hunting some of the predators around his land he would give you horse riding lessons. You tried to get your teacher to tell you more, but he would always wave it off as something to do with the outside world, not the heavily isolated village.

"I'll tell you wen you're older." He would say after a few too many drinks. "Nothing good comes from the outside anyway."
(continued)
>>
"Plan?" Mr. Urumesh asks as he finishes lighting some strange wooden sticks which give off a strangely tangy scent.

Good question. You are the only ranger left in the village, and the person who can "harvest" or force the cordis of a dead creature to become a crystal, which can them be removed and used for enchantment, apart from perhaps Julius and Thomas. You are also the villages only ranger, the only one who can safely find and destroy the major threats against the village before they become close, and the only one who can venture out freely and make contact and contracts with the various spirits. There will likely be many tasks the village requires of you, and with the harvest coming soon you may wish to stock up on a bit more meat.

Then again your master took most of the enchanted gear with him when he left hunting the life drinker, so you may wish to go hunting for some more magically inclined beasts to harvest their Cordis in use of enchantment. Then again, your teacher's gear may be out there still, and he deserves vengeance.

You hear another pair of foot steps approach as Urumesh mutters something under his breath which sounds like a song.

You turn to look at the approaching figure and see a matronly woman with steel grey hair and eyes the lightest shade of blue. She is wearing robes which signify her as a member of church, long and flowing, with the symbol of a flower and a pair of hands. You narrow your eyes as she gives you a small bow. "I am sorry for your loss." She says and you nod.

"As am I." You reply cautiously.

"I am Vistilia, I serve Melidius at the temple of the twelve. I wish there was more we could have done for your master, but by the time he arrived..." She shakes her head, sorrow lining her aged features. "I am not here to bring up old memories. Your master was our primary source of herbs and medicine. We know enough to mix and apply the medicines, but with winter getting closer our stores are not as fleshed out as we would like them to be." She explains.

You frown as you think it over. It isn't like you are against the twelve, or the work the priests of Melidius do, but you always found the section to the temple dedicated to her to be a bit creepy. Cots filled with the dead and the dieing, each surrounded by a different praying person, each of their voices mixing the in dark, dry room. You shudder as you remember when you had to go there for a delivery once and a man covered in festering pustules reached for you while begging.

"You have a list of the plants?" You ask and she nods.

"Most near the village of by the glade we can gather easily enough, but for some of them we will have to go into the deep woods for them." She explains pulling out a small piece of parchment.

"You need this now?" You ask and she thinks for a moment before shaking her head.
(continued)
>>
"We shall likely be able to last for a little while at least, though the harvest festival tends to drain our supplies. Before the first snowfall would be ideal." She explains. You look over the listed herbs and note that most you can get pretty easily, but a few you will have to go into the deep southern woods for. Far away from the comparatively friendly eastern portion you normally prefer.

"I will get back to you. As you can imagine there is a great many things I have to put back in order." You explain and she gives you a nod.

"Of course. Again, I am terribly sorry for your loss young man. I shall pray for his soul and your good fortune." She explains before turning and stepping away, the steps brisk and confident.

You look over the slowly thinning group of people and note Urumesh seems to have left as you were speaking to the priestess. There are countless things you need to do, and less time than you would like to think.

You remember your master spoke of making contact with the guardian of the eastern woods to help prevent the nastier things, Sytherian Wyrms, Rot biters, forest manticores and the like from getting to close, though the vanguard still had to occasionally deal with them. You could also go see your teacher's shack, according to his will you get everything in there. Of course if your master did leave with the crystallized Cordis, the essence of creatures slain and harvested, then that means Julius is likely low as well, and he is always willing to hire you on for a bit of work. He was the one who enchanted your cloak after all.

There are clearly many people you can get work from, and a lot of things to do.

You pull your cloak a bit tighter as a biting wind blows over the hillside and think. Your master was behaving oddly, taking the Cordis from where he kept it, and leaving without really a word to anyone. You nod to yourself and resolve your next course of action.

You walk down the hill and onto the crude dirt path which connects most of the village. You take extra care to avoid being seen by the few people out and about this late in the afternoon, preferring to keep your thoughts to yourself for the moment. You walk towards the northern edge of the village and then continue on north, towards the mountains rather than follow the road's winding path to the west. You enter the small section of forest which marks the border of your village and continue on. It takes you perhaps half of an hour to make your way through the ticket and into the clearing where your master's cabin stands.

Much of it is as you remember, a large building with a small shed. A chopping block with a well notched axe planted firmly in the stump with long since dried blood from his various hunting trips splattered around it. Your gaze goes hazy for a moment and you wipe your eyes when you remember how proud the old man was when you killed and cleaned your first rabbit, you would think you hunted a blueheaded gorehide with how the old man was gushing about you over drinks. You take a moment to steel yourself as you approach the door, your hand on the handle for a few moments. You take a deep breath and throw it open and stepping inside.

The house seems clean, inordinately so. Your nostrils are assaulted by the smell of spices, herbs, leather, cooking, and just plain old life. You blink away a few more tears before you step inside, the room, a certain coldness that had nothing to do with the changing of the seasons washing over you.

The man who lived here is never coming back.

The man who lived here is dead.
(continued)
>>
You walk over to the fireplace and prod the ashes a bit, trying to get some embers going, then resolve yourself to starting the fire. The simple action gives you a chance to put your feelings back into control and as the pleasant smell of woodsmoke finally washes over you, you are ready to continue.

You walk over to the main section of the room, a large dining table with various books stacked neatly against it. You see several of the books have a large feather acting as book marks so you open them to the pages and see drawings and information about life eaters. You nod as you look over the old information for a few moments, close the book, then set it back on the table. You walk over to his bed, a large thing covered in far more furs than really necessary. More books, a pitcher of water, a desk against the table. You try a few of the drawers but find them locked. You shrug before walking to the bookshelf by the fireplace and pulling the massive thing to the side. The case slides easily, revealing a trap door underneath. You tug the old hinged thing open and descent the ladder into the basement.

You grope blindly for a few moments until you feel the cold metal of a lantern sitting on a barrel next to the last step. You mutter a small command under your breath and the lantern flares to light, the complex device still functioning perfectly. You look forward at the small tunnel and walk the few steps it takes to enter the basement proper. Rows, upon rows of countless books. Some thin and leathery with age, others with delicate scrawling on them. A few made of chitin and others on stone tablets in languages you could never hope to understand. You walk through the library, your master's pride and joy, and find your way to a large metal door with various inscriptions.

You touch a hand to the door and feel the Cordis used to enchant it is also gone. You frown as you tug open the damn heavy thing and find yourself in your masters vault.
(continued)
>>
Or what would be his vault if there was anything in it.

What was once filled with weapons, and Cordis now remains nearly totally empty. Your master's personal arsenal and tool kit now barren and lifeless. Now that is strange, your master had weapons to spare, but what could cause him to bring all of them? Even Life eaters are not that much of a threat. More to the point, where are they now?

You look around the vault for any clues, but finding none you leave and make your way back upstairs. By his will he wanted you to have the home, a much larger place than your own, and with more things tan would fit in your current small shack you keep.

You look around the kitchen area for some dried meat and take your time eating it while thinking.

What was he doing? Why did he leave with everything? He wouldn't have just left all of his books at the house if he were running away, but what could cause him to feel the need to take all of his weapons? Some of which he couldn't even use?

You realize that just thinking the same questions over and over will just make your head spin so you shake your head and look over the books on the table. Life eaters, guardian spirits, contracts, and countless other things.

"Master." You mutter to yourself, the cold cabin feeling more alive with just your voice. "What in the hells did you get yourself into?"

What do you want to do?
[]Read some of the books and journals on the creatures in the southern woods, where your master died

A mystery doesn't solve itself. You hang the pot to cook up some stew and start pouring over the journals and books on the southern woods. You pour over detained information about fauna and snakes and find your master seems to have written all over the side margins of the books. You scoff slightly, remembering how he would scold you for trying to write your notes in your own copies of the books.

You look over the notes get a general sense of the creatures in the southern woods, or southern woods and marshland as it were, since it seems the terrain changes as you go further in. The driders dominate the southern woods, spider like beasts with gross parodies of humans from the hips up on the front. The sketch in the book shows a lean, gaunt, human with sharp teeth, too wide black eyes, and skin stretched tight over shiny chitin. They have venom and seem able to imitate human speech, in that way they can lure people into their traps. There is a second note under the driders which reads "Webweaver seems to be the guardian of the southern woods, just as Grandpa Oak is in charge of this section. Seems ancient and potentially a mage, should be avoided at all costs. Will likely not fight unless given cause to."

You frown thinking of the name "Grandfather oak". Something about a major creature? Something about lay-lines? You shake your head as you look over a few more of the creatures. "Swamp Hags. Humanoid, possibly related to trolls. Massive Cordis, and able to use magic intuitively. Nearly two dozen as of xxx/x/x Should not be taken on without impact arrows, several traps, and some heavy armor. Damn thing nearly took my eye when I went in last time, and it looks like they take children and mutate them into themselves. Never thought I would be happy there are so many damn driders keeping them back." You smile a little as you flip the page and find a picture of a giant flower with teeth in the center and lashing tentacles grabbing a horse and pulling it into it.
(cont.)
>>
"Taintblooms. Where the hell did these things come from? Smell like something god awful and clouds your mind making it hard to cast. The damn things can lash out and drag anything into them. Worst part is, I swear to god, these damn things move. Actually move like they have little legs they grow when you aren't looking. Never managed to harvest one of the things, but I keep getting ideas of what I could make with it's Cordis." You close the book and finish preparing the stew.

By the time it is dark you have already finished the stew so you decide to get yourself moved in. You ram into small stumps and rocks and the like as you move back and forth between your cabin on the other side of the town, closer to the eastern section of the woods and the lake, and your master's- well, your new cabin. It thankfully doesn't take too long. A few journals, your bow and arrows, your leathers, your cloak. You manage to put most of what you own into a small sack and carry it with your new home.

It is nearly midnight by the time you finally get all your things set so you strip out of your mourning clothes and fall into the bed.

Your night is troubled by dreams.

You run through the black forest, hunted by snarling, hissing things. You know they are out there, trying to find you, trying to eat you. You run as fast as your little legs can carry you back to your home and mother, her dark eyes and colorful silk like a beacon in the darkness. You hear slithering as you fall over right into a woman's arms. You pant heavily and cry out for your mother, begging her to save you, when you realize that your mother's skin is not pale, and her body not so thin. You look up into a pair of shimmering green eyes as it drags you into a spring then-
(cont.)
>>
There is pounding at the door. You jolt awake as the constant stream of heavy thuds breaks you out of the unpleasant reprieve. You grumble something unpleasant towards who ever invented doors and make several threats of setting up traps you are pretty sure you won't follow through with as you put on your pants. You walk over to the door and open it to reveal a kid in armor a size or two small for him.

"Delarus! Come on right quick, it's Belle, she's ain't good." He says, his voice thick with accent.

You grumble something as your brain starts waking up. "Neville?" You ask, recognition finally washing over you.

Neville Crispin was the youngest boy of the Crispin farm. He and his two older brothers were the terrors of the village guard, running protection and bullying the other boys. He was the most tolerable of the three of them, but that certainly isn't saying much. Him and his brothers even tried bullying you once when you went in for sword lessons with old Ioen, and it ended with black eyes all around and with you needing to get your nose set. Belle, Annabelle or something like that, was the youngest of the family. 10 or 11, and was spoiled like nothing else. Granted even the father is sort of a jerk, skimping on his payment to the village and the like, but the man just wants to be left alone. You suppose you can respect that.

>>
You blink away the grogginess and finally see the red headed kid, well kid might be stretching it as the guy is only two years younger than you, shivers and blinks. You look down at your bare chest and then back up to him. "Let me get dressed." You state before going back into the cabin. You pull your boots on and your shit, skipping your hunter's leathers till you need them, and then throw on your cloak, the thick cloth carrying a good weight to it as it settles over you. You grab a few trinkets to carry with you and then nod to Neville.

He leads the way, his armor making his steps cumbersome and awkward. You job beside him nimbly and glance towards him. "What's wrong with her?" You ask.

"She came in yesterday looking weird and went to bed. Then, I don't know, she just wouldn't wake up. We tried to wake her but she just moaned and wouldn't get up." He explains snorting, tears marking his voice.

"You took her to the healer then?" You ask and he nods making you frown.

"We took her in there, and they gave her something, and she woke up, but then she just kept crying that she was hurt, and she got this rash. The healer said they didn't know, and that maybe you have seen it." He explains and you just nod.

True, the rangers often found poisons and strange things in their travels, but even more of them just flat out died from it. Guess that's why you are the only one left. You make your way into the city proper and continue keeping pace with Neville, his awkward steps causing his too large armor to clank about like dish pans. You eventually make it to the temple.
(cont.)
>>
The building is not what you would call big, really. When you hear big you think of tall buildings, with height to match their size. The temple was wide, with several sections for each of the divines, but it was all one floor, barely two if you count the basement and who does, really? You stand in front of the doors as Neville catches his breath and you blink for a few moments. Again, you steel yourself before walking in. The strange scent of tonics and oils used by the various priests and priestesses to the twelve assaults your nose and you are thankful the priests don't wear bright clothes, as having one sense totally overwhelmed is enough for you. You stride in confidently, the general atmosphere muted and serene but with an indescribable quality to it.

You walk past the section of Gulvir, filled with offerings for the harvest which is just around the corner, Rashar, the strange image of the rotting goddess making you momentarily wish you had your bow with you, just in case her effigy came to life and needed to be put down, and finally to Melidius, which doubled as the sick ward for the village.

You take a deep breath, soft chants helping you ease your mind, and then stride into the room. Luckily it seems the only major injury in the village seems to be some broken bones and hangovers, and you don't see the plagued faces of the dieing you have come to expect with the place. At least, until you come to the last bed.
(cont)
>>
Annabelle lays there surrounded by her brothers and father with a priestess of Melidius standing over her, not the matronly woman you met before, you note. The girl is red of hair and fair of skin like the rest of her family, only now her face has a nice rash the same color as her hair to go along with it. Her eyes are open an unfocused, and she seems to be in a cold sweat. He breath is coming in wheezing gasps and you can see her body is too thin for a girl about to go through the magic of puberty. You furrow your brow as Dominic, the oldest boy looks at you. "The hell's wrong with her?"

"Let me see." You say walking over to her.

"Excuse me, this is a house of healing." The priestess protests stepping over to you, and you see she is about your age, if not a year or two older.

"I am Delarus." You say, though she doesn't move. "Hune?" You continue and she furrows her brows, trying to decide what you mean. "The ranger. The- I delivered medicine and herbs to the church before." You explain and she shakes her head.

"Master Mathios was the one who did that, and he is dead. I don't remember hearing-" She starts but an older voice cuts her off.

"It's alright dear. He speaks the truth."

You turn and see they matronly woman from the funeral, Vistilia, standing near an injured man on a cot. You give her a brief nod and move past the girl who still seems confused.

You look over her face, her arms and hands and see the rash seems centered on her fingers and forehead. You frown as you lift the sheet and expose her body.

"That's my little sister you sick-" Dominic starts but his dad scowls and silences him.

You give a nod to the father as way of thanks and look over her body. Small rash marks near her stomach and around her waist, but no noticeable bite marks, of the black of venom or the bubbling of insect eggs. So likely poison of some sort.
(cont)
>>
"Where was she?" You ask and the father narrows his eyes.

"In the woods." Dominic wxplains and you sigh.

"Which part of the woods? Which area? I know of at least twelve different plants which can cause rashes like these, and knowing where she was will help." You explain putting the blankets back over her.

"Round bouts the mountain I s'pect." The father nods. "Western portion, 'fore the dirt turns to rock."

"Near the mountains." You nod to yourself as your memories come back of studying local fauna with your teacher, the joy you felt when correctly identifying the plants being rewarded.

"Gloomwillow vine." You say.

"Not moon bloom?" The father asks and you give a small smile.

"Wrong season for it, and the moon bloom leaves black patches. Best cure is honey made from their pollen. Carries some anti-toxin in it." You explain as you remember the time you yourself fell into a patch and the sticky sweet honey brew your teacher made making you nearly sicker with how much you took, but it did work.

"Frost bringing em ta sleep I figure." The father says.

"That's true but..."

I wouldn't trust other people with going in the woods and collecting the pollen without getting poisoned themselves.

You narrow your eyes. "Yeah, figure the season might just be getting a bit cold for them to be out and about. I should be able to find them myself though." You explain.

You see the man's eye flash angrily for a few seconds before nodding. "Debt." He says softly then goes back to looking at his daughter.

You back away, thinking it best not to get on the man's bad side as Neville walks into the room. You walk past him and feel him grip your arm. "Sorry, he is just mad he can't do anything." He explains and you blink in realization.

Your own father committed suicide by bottle when you were young a few years after your mother died. Your master acted as a surrogate father in a way, but it wasn't the same. He taught, you learned and while it isn't to say he didn't love you in his own way or care about your well being it still seems somewhat different. You glance back at the patriarch of the Crispin family. You let your eyes linger long enough to catch the details. The bags under his eyes which show a total lack of sleep, the nails of his fingers biting into his bicep. His sons standing next to him and looking worried, but not allowing himself to show even a hint of fear or pain as he has to be the pillar that holds them all up. He has to otherwise who will. You feel a pang of envy towards the Crispins, lucky jerks they are and then look back to Neville offering him a small smile. "Go be with your family Neville."
(cont)

He nods and you make your way out of the shrine of Melidius. You decide better safe than sorry and offer a brief prayer to Viratex, his statue a massive hulking man with several arms with a different weapon in each, and great tusks; the patron of hunters and orphens. Then you turn and offer one to Mnemio, god of archers, his statue a feeble old man guarding a flock of clouds in the sky. You are not devout, per say, but why risk getting on the bad side of what could be impossibly powerful beings? Couldn't hurt, right? You leave the building and don't look towards Nyx or Rashar, their temples a bit disturbing to you and make your way swiftly back towards the cabin. You get your leathers out of where you stored them with herbs and cures in order to eliminate as much of the smell as possible and to allow it to be protected from the elements and grab your bow, your arrows, your food and water, traps and lures, and you pause looking over the books.

On a guess you pick up the one over the western section of the woods, the comparatively small forest which forms a buffer against the mountains and look through it a bit. Less venomous creatures, seems snakes don't like mountains and the blade swoopers stay far away from the area as they don't want to get anywhere near the blade drake's territory. You nod looking through it and feel a little relief that the blade drakes tend to go deeper into the mountains during the fall and winter.
(cont)
>>
You are about to close it when you see a note. "Blighttusks, the normally fairly docile creatures with horns every which way, seem to breed during the fall and winter months. During harvest season these creatures should be considered highly dangerous. However, due to the natural surge in energy this is also the most ideal time to harvest their Cordis." You blink at that.

Blight tusks, or poison elks, were massive shaggy moose like creatures. They had countless pointy antlers and massive tusks which curled around their face and dripped with poison. Generally, as long as you avoided provoking them, they would leave you alone or flee, but during mating season you can hear the sound of their heads ramming into each other from the village as well if you listen well enough. They are strong, with a thick coat and their poison is enough to fell a man if their sharp, razor lined tusks and antlers don't gore you into something resembling fruit pulp.

You throw your cloak back on over your leathers, the enchanted thing being impossibly useful for a hunter for countless reasons. It has mild camouflage abilities, turning roughly the same color as the surrounding area, but more importantly it absorbed the scent of an area like nobodies business. People underestimate how much they stink, really, and animals or more importantly the 'monsters' were able to pick up on that. Plus it had a bunch of little pockets sewed into it, and you love little pockets.
(cont)
>>
After a moment of thought you tuck the smaller journal of the western forest into one of your pockets, just in case you need it, and grab your hunting gear.

Then you set off to the woods.

It takes a over an hour to get to the woods proper, you spending that time following the few people about, measuring your footsteps, making sure your every act is perfect, and as quiet as death. People have a terrible disadvantage when it comes to the beasts and monsters of the world, your master would say. We can't see as well as the flyers, we can't move as soft as the reptiles, we can't fight as hard as the other mammals, we can't go as deep as the fish, and the amphibians just think we're ugly. Hell, most everything is faster than us and cunning as hell. The only thing we have going for us is smarts. Snakes are clever, but humans are smart enough to know where to grab them. Bugs are clever, but we know how to change the rules of the game. Monsters are clever, and smart, and we are smart enough to know how to stay the hell away from them.

Be smart. Be fast. Be better.

You walk into the western woods and find....

You enter the forest and start your search. You make small marking on different trees and rocks, just in case your mental map fails you, and make sure to measure your steps carefully and to press yourself against trees to keep yourself hidden. You remember the printed paper the woman gave you and spend some time grabbing a few herbs and flowers you notice on this list as you go. No sense to not try and multi-task while you can, right? The sound of ramming makes it easy to avoid the Blighttusks and you give a silent thanks to your teacher for the warning. As nice as the beasts are when peaceful, you have seen what happens when one of them gets mad.

You get turned around once or twice before finally finding a section of the woods filled with gloomwillow vines. You look over the large flowering vine, with their flowers a robust purple, green, and white, and look around the area. You find a small trail leading from the grove back to town which seems to have been made by someone much lighter than an adult, as well as a few of the vines braided into tiaras and bracelets and you think you start getting the picture as to what happened. You shake your head and start looking at the surrounding trees. You are careful to keep your face covered as the large flowering vines seem to be hanging everywhere and you would rather not have to go through treatment again, even though it tends to be less severe for adults.
(cont)
>>
You are about to give up when you see, on the very top of a large tree, a massive hive. You smile to yourself as you carefully pick your way up through the vines and branches. You nearly get stuck close to the top, but you luckily manage to find an impossibly thick branch to stand on. You look over the hive and frown as you note a few lazily buzzing drones. You grab a few of the herbs from your cloak and strike a light to them, close enough under the hive for the smoke to get in. It takes a few tries, but eventually the herbs catch and the numbing smoke wafts up into the hive, causing the bees to buzz drunkenly before falling over. You smile at the clever trick and carefully harvest what you think is enough of the honey to be mixed into some food for young girl. You are smiling to yourself on being clever when you notice something odd.

The branch you are standing on seems to be moving.

You look down and before your eyes the bark like exterior shifts to armored hide wrapped around a thick, leathery skin of purple and grey. You look towards the "head" of the creature and see a massive Wyrm. You blink as the sightless head turns up to look at you, well not look per say as where the eyes should be there are just more armored plates. You rack your brain, trying to remember the creatures name as it opens it's fang filled mouth dripping with drool and lets out a sub sonic roar which you can feel.

"Sytherian Wyrm. Camouflaged. Not supposed to be about in this season" You note before stuffing the bottle into your cloak and grabbing your bow.

The massive wyrm twists back and tries to bite at you, and for a moment you can not remember how your legs work, but as it's maw closes in and you see the rotating saw like teeth lining it's throat you suddenly remember and slide back over the armor plating, drawing a steel arrow and firing into the large maw. It lets out one more of those subsonic roars and you feel like your eyes might vibrate out of your skull, but you ready another arrow and fire, cursing as the beast lowers its head and deflects the blow.

You kneel down as the body starts to thrash and twist and knock another arrow then fire, but sadly the thick armor prevents you from doing anything more than stinging it a few times. Thinking quickly over your master's note's you remember something about the soft underbelly of the wyrm generally being the weak point and remember a rough diagram of the creature's internal organs. You swallow as the beast twists and you leap onto a separate branch. You ready another arrow, but the wyrm is swift and quickly leaps after you. You try readying an arrow, but the wyrm, a shockingly agile thing despite it's size, wraps itself around the tree you are on and lunges towards you. You feel the tree creak and groan as the large weight gets added to it and barely manage to leap away to another tree swearing silently about how it seems to be able to jump.

The book did not say they can jump

Why does it jump?!

You turn and fire an arrow and manage to score a hit on it's underbelly as it coils around the nearby tree, but it just lets out an even louder roar before vaulting towards you again, a massive ram looking to take a bite out of the annoying ranger who thinks it can hurt it. You leap away and get sent into a spin as the creature's tail smacks against your ankle and sends you tumbling into some trees and you swear. If only you could get under him, you think. If only there was some way to reset the fight to when I was below him on the-
(cont)
>>
You freeze as an idea hits you. You look back towards the wyrm as it's massive drooling mouth twitches hungrily towards you and get an idea. You start leaping away from the wyrm, going from tree to tree until you find the perfect spot and you eventually find it. Several branches all tangled together, enough to support the wyrms weight were it to crawl across it like when you first found it. You turn and ready one of the arrows with delicate carving all along the head and shaft, all linking together to form several perfect circles of force. You wait for it to leap towards you and then instead of running away you leap onto the beast. It thrashes, rolling around the canopy and over the massive ancient tree branches which support it. You hold onto one of the plates and bite down hard to avoid biting your tongue and wait for a chance. The beast finally rolls into an ideal spot and you leap again, only this time to the tree branches below.

The branches snap as you go through, but give you enough force to turn and ready your bow. Time seems to slow as you put aside the distracting things like how close the ground is getting, or how stupid an idea this ir, or how hard it is to get these arrows and focus. You look at the soft underbelly, getting slightly smaller as the moments pass, and take your time. You remember your anatomy books on the beasts and target the forward section, close enough right?
(cont)
>>
You chide yourself. You have time. All the time you need, this is your shot.

You focus deeply on the creatures anatomy, putting a pen drawing over the real being in your mind, adjust your aim, then let the arrow fly. The arrow moves quickly, through the hole in the branches your leap left and strikes against the left side of the front portion of the creature's body. Instead of the subsonic roar in response to a bee sting however, there is a sharp crack as magic is released and , like like the massive fist of an unseen giant, slams into the wyrms body and sends it up easily over a dozen feet, yellow blood and gore flying with it as the great force takes the beast. You smile satisfied before reaching out your arms and raising your surface area, allowing more of the branches to grab you and snap, taking away some of your force until you hit one off the larger branches over half way down the tree, and manage to slide down. You scramble over to the tree and hug yourself close as the great wyrm hits the ground in a far less graceful manner, the body making a sickening splat as it hits, and crushes the gloomwillow vines.

You look over the beast and see it is still trashing somewhat, the majority of its chest cavity exposed form the powerful enchantment your teacher put on the quiver. Do you want to cast the ritual and try to harvest the Cordis?

You turn to leave the wyrm and realize something troubling. You are the last ranger. The last person able to cast the binding spell in the village and who will actively go out and hunt. You are perhaps the last one who will be able to speak with spirits and find the hidden paths, like all those stories your teacher told you. You frown as you look over one of your steel arrows. You calmly use some of the blood and a hook from one of your traps to etch a circle into the arrow head. Carefully marking the item as a tool. You carefully etch the bindings around the arrow's shaft, aware you have to get it while it is alive or all of it's soul will go to the home of Nyx. You nod, satisfied you did it well enough and then pour your will into the arrow as you ready your shot. Power flows out of you and nearly takes you from your feet, but the faint aura surrounding you and the arrow assures you that you probably did it right.

The spell flashes violently, your own cordis energy leaking magic everywhere, making you look like you are covered in lashing webs of shimmering blue light. You mutter the incantation as your master taught you and fire, feeling drained.

Current Cordis:4

You lean forward as soon as the arrow strikes and you see a massive blue light, like what was around you, flickering and lashing out, turning the portion of it's own natural magic into a gem. That was sloppy, really sloppy. You spent the last few years hunting meat and getting a good lay of the land without practicing the spiritual aspects of it, and it was coming back to bite you now. Still, despite your lack of practice, you see where the arrow struck crystallizing into a solid green stone flecked with silver and yellow. You walk over to it and pick it up, smiling to yourself.

You take a deep breath as you feel your body refilling itself and turn back towards town. You have a life to save.

It takes you less time to make it back, not bothering hiding yourself from the people passing you by, though the blacksmith asks if you got into a fight with a tree and lost when he was on his way back from the tavern. "By Gulvir you must be drunk. I clearly won the fight." You tell him before making your way back to the temple.

You make your way into the hushed building just as the priests start putting out the lanterns and torches which will keep the building illuminated all night, just to show the people the gods are always watching or perhaps to help the drunkards find their way there after the seasonal bar fights which always arrive just before harvest. Who says the twelve can't be multi-taskers too? You make your way to the back where you find Neville sitting by his sister's bed, his father asleep in a chair next to him. "Hey, Delarus. Did you get it?" He whispers.

"Yeah. Where are the sisters?" You ask glancing around.

He grins a little. "The mayor got into an argument with Ioen about the security of the town. They decided to drink to decide who was right."

"Well, as long as it's important." You say and take a seat across from him.

Deciding to be productive you grab a nearby quill from the stand. You look over your journal and find the recipe for the master's curative in there and start writing it out on a torn out paper from the back. For a long time the only sound is the wheezing breathing of young Belle and the rhythmic scratching of your writing. You are content to let the silence drag on but Neville clears his throat causing you to look up. He seems to be debating something then he nods deciding to speak. "About my brothers and I. The way we treat you and everybody I mean. I'm sorry."
(cont)
>>
"Well, that's nice but it doesn't help to just hear you say it. Your brothers raise a lot of hell around here you know." You reply and Neville nods.

"Yeah, I know."

"And you just try and stay back and laugh along. That isn't much better." You explain and you think you see a sad smile cross his features.

"Yeah, I know. It might be worse even." He replies and you tap the paper a bit.

"Then why do you do it?" You ask and he shrugs.

"If I din't then my brother's would be alone. Can't let that happen, got to look out fer each other." He explains.

"So that's why you let them be jerks, but why are they jerks in the first place?" You ask and he winces.

"Our mom." He replies and you tilt your head.

"You mean how she died a bit after your sister was born? That sucks man, believe me, but at least you still have your dad and he seems to at least care. Hell, and you have each other, you know what I would give for brothers and sisters?" You ask and he seems to get a hopeless look in his eyes.
(cont)
>>
"S'right, we told everyone she died. She didn't die. She ran off." He explains and you pause.

"Ran off? Where?" You ask and he shrugs.

"Don't know. She and dad weren't- They weren't really getting along too good. Always fighting. No hittin' or nothing, just always angry at each other. One day Dominic goes up to her and asks if she still loves us. She hugs him and says course she does. Next day she just vanishes. Turns out she got on a boat and crossed the lake with some Tobius fella, seems they just wanted to start over together somewhere." He explains.

"Maybe she was-" You start but he shakes his head.

"We already did the what ifs and the like. Look, I ain't sayin it excuses my brother's behavior, or mine even, I am just saying it how it is. And I'm sorry we got you caught up in it and all, but I figured, I mean. Nyx, you know what I mean." He says and you nod.

The silence gets sort of uncomfortable after a few moments so you decide to

You nod to Neville, fully aware that the admittance of how his brothers were behaving and why was a large step for him. You make a show of stretching, only half faked before looking around the building. "May as well go find the healers, I had to fall out of a tree for this." You explain before walking off.

You fish the journal out of your pockets and leave a small note next to the picture of one of the wyrms coiled around a tree. "Some Jump" You decide to add, just until you get your own journal with which to scribble notes in. You make your way through the wide building and eventually find the Matron and the same priestess from before tending to both the town elder and Ioen, the great bear of a man who leads the vanguard. "An' like I tellsh you, yer, yer. I love yoush man. Like, were we totally. Were it all making sense, we would so just work." Ioen explains to the town elder.

"No, no. I, no. I have to be the bad guy. I am okay with it, but you. You are this big, oh look at me I'm a big hero guy. I have to be the bad guy so you can be good, and I'm okay with that but where's my festival, huh? Where's my festival?" The elder asks wisely, his thick bushy white eyebrows furrowed.

You give a small amused smile while you lean against the doorway where they were being kept at as the Matron hurries around the two of them, moving buckets filled with things you would rather not think about. After a few moments you give a knock on the door frame and everyone turns to you, except for Ioen who tries to turn to fast and falls off his stool.

"Eve." You offer with a nod as way of greeting.

"Delarus. Did you get the honey?" Vistilia asks and you hold up the bottle. "Thank Melidius."

"I was hoping I could show the two of you how to brew this, if it isn't too much trouble. It is pretty simple and you can mix it in just about anything." You explain and Matron Vistilia lets out a huff of annoyance.
(cont)
>>
"As much as I would enjoy learning now, but these two seem to require a bit more care. Magia, would you kindly go with him and help prepare it while I tend these two?" She asks and the other priestess bows her head before walking by you.

"Shall we?" She offers a hand towards a direction and you follow it.

You get a better look a Magia as you walk and notice more about her features. She is light skinned, perhaps a shade darker than the sick Belle Crispin and you can see faint freckles across her face, going from cheekbone to cheekbone over her nose. She has an average farmer's daughter build and light brown hair which falls to about her shoulders. You think she can feel you look at her as she glances back towards you with an asking expression and you note her dark green eyes are ringed with fatigue.

"You look exhausted.": You note as you take step beside her.

She shrugs "The festival approaches. The temple has to be ready for healing and performing the various duties we have assigned to us. After that is done we should get less of a work load." She explains.

"Still, can't be easy." You reply and she bites her lip for a moment in thought.

"It is easier on me than Vistilia. She has been doing this for much longer than me and some of the rights are very taxing. Some of us have had to pull double duty for some of the other gods and, well, they were not made for the older in mind." She explains as you make your way to the kitchen.

You show her how to make the honey based tonic and how to mix it with a light soup. The sticky sweet smell wafts up and nearly makes you gag as you remember your master force feeding you undiluted honey they first time, just to teach you your lesson. Later when you got a more mild case you discovered you can mix it with things. You take the simple brother over the Belle's bedside and tilt her up as you have her drink some.
(cont)
>>
"How long does it take to work?" Magia asks and you think back.

"It should work fast, and then just be sure to give it to her, either mixed in food or as that tonic with her every meal and she should be well enough to go home in a few days." You explain and you not Magia is making notes in a small journal similar to the ones you like to use.

"If she rejects the medicine?" She asks.

"Mix it with crushed antler and then add it. The sweetness can sometimes be overwhelming but that should make it much more tolerable." You explain.

"I see." She writes a few more things down and nods satisfied. "Thank you Mr. Hune. I am most grateful." She explains and you nod.

As you turn to look at the girl she adds on. "And for treating you like a villain when we first met. I am most sorry for my actions." She continues and you shrug.

"It's fine, you were just doing your job. No harm done in the long run." You decide to let it go, no point holding grudges.

"And I am also sorry, but you stink." She continues wryly and you blink.

"I stink?" You ask and she nods.

"Like dirt, sweat, and some sort of rotten meat smell." She continue and you look down at your boots, where the wyrm may have splattered a little.
(cont)
>>
"What can I say? I live on the edge." You reply edging closer.

She covers her nose and smiles a little while swatting you on the arm and backing away.

already the girl's breathing seems to be doing much better, so hearing that Magia is going to try and get an hour or two of sleep you decide to leave into the night.

You make your way through the dark town, the stars acting as a perfect map of the night sky, and make your way back to the cabin. You realize you have no grabbed a wash yesterday either, but you decide to put it off for now as you remove your leathers, your cloak, and your weapons. You look over the books your master left you and sit down to continue reading about the woods around you. It seems the woods to the east are protected by grandfather oak. "Tough old bastard, and takes forever to answer questions or decide something, but at least he is pretty friendly with people. Seems it is hard to get on his bad side, and just as hard to get on his good side. Seems friendly with the guardian of the mountain, though I have no idea what the talk about. Ask Lilly to try and get me more attendance with him." You blink as the name goes around in your head.

You flip through the book, the name Lilly bothering you, until you eventually find it under 'Nymph' 'Nymph, a spirit being that is generally given shape when the natural leyline energy suffuses with free magic. Legends go of them seducing and killing travelers as well as bringing good fortune if offered tribute, though these findings are difficult at best to confirm. It seems that, unlike the guardians of a territory, they change based on their environment rather than changing the environment to match their personalities. possible origin of swamp hags?" You look over the information then read through Lilly. "Nymph of the spring outside of town. Does not show herself easily to others and even if you know she is there she might not show up. Very magically powerful and tends to play tricks on travelers, though not overly malicious. Seems to take special care to lead children lost near her section of the woods back to the village. It is unknown what she would consider proper tribute."

You flip through a second book to the term spirit. "A being with no vitae, only Cordis. They are formed by either magic, belief, or through other means. Not to be confused with undead, who have mutated their vitae to act as a Cordis. In theory give the strongest Cordis if killed and bound, and can even maintain their sense of self through the process. However as the process of binding requires you kill the target it should not be done to friendly or potentially friendly spirits." You make a mental note of the information and then close the books.

You look to the Cordis you collected and then pick it up and look over your items, deciding what to enchant. You grab your boots, drying by the fire after you scraped the gunk off them, and press the stone to the surface. You mutter something and the stone melts into them and then causes the boots to change. They are still leather, though now they seem to have some plates similar to the wyrms lining a few key places. You nod happily to yourself and slide the boots on, expecting a sudden tingle of magic but get... nothing.

You frown as you jog in place for a few moments, then run back and forth over your floor, but you are about the same as always. In frustration you stomp your foot down and with a loud "Sproing!" You get shot into the air. You slam your head into the high ceiling making you see stars before you fall back down to the ground, holding your head and totally not crying.

heh, i guess i'm not the middle ground

You grab a blank journal off the shelf and make a note of what they do before taking the boots off then removing the Cordis with an effort of will. It takes a few seconds, but eventually the gem melts out of the boots and lands on your outstretched hand. You look over what you have and decide to put it in your leathers. With a second muttering of words and an effort of will, you push the Cordis into the armor. You watch as plates just appear as if they have always been there on the back of the armor. You frown as you tap your knuckle against it a few times. Then you get your bow and an arrow, take aim at one of the plates on the back, and let it fly. The arrow deflects off the armor and stabs into the floor. That will probably buff out.

Lose Coil spring boots lvl 1
Gain: Arrow deflection armor lvl 1.

You open up the journal and make a note of what it did before walking over to the bed, stripping down, and then going to sleep.

Your sleep is troubled by nightmares once again,

I seem to be down to 2-3 people, so I will call it now.

How was it? Good/bad? Any ideas if I should have a next time? I sort of planned on this being a one shot but I liked where I was going so I made it semi-open ended. Any lore questions? I pretty much just fleshed out a ton of that and ended up deciding to run with it.

It sounds pretty good and the choices were decent.
Maybe just remind people when the voting is closed.
Also get a twitter or something so that we know when to see the next one.

understandable knowing what they have seen and experienced.

The village you live in is heavily isolated. The forest to the south is the only proper path out, but even if the roads were not totally destroyed, it would take a horse running full tilt a long time to make it out of there. The lake to the east provides fishing. The forest runes all around the village, and the eastern forest is south relative to the lake. The western wood is not as heavily populated due to the presence of the mountains. The mountains runfrom the north to the west, for a good distance. Supposedly there is a sea past the mountains, but you have never seen in.

Julius and Urumesh are both from the "outside world"

Julius came here around 70 years ago or so with his master who evidently got taken and eaten by the webweaver. Urumesh came here around twenty years ago. This is a very, very isolated community. You don't even know the name of the "nation" you are a part of.
