You have agreed to join Diane and her brother Andre on their mission to clear out an orc warcamp. You decide to bring both Anna and Leman Russ along for the trip. The morning of your departure, you inform Anna and tell her to get ready to leave. After prayer and breakfast, you pack your things and head out. You have all your normal belongings, and some money left. As you walk through the market, Diane asks if there's anything you'd like to acquire before you leave civilization, as it will be at least three days before you get back. Andre even offers to float you a few coins.

A) Accept the money and the offer
B) Accept the offer but not the money
C) Decline, you have everything you need
D) Other

You have: 2 gold, 6 silver, Sword, Holy Symbol, Dad's Knife, Anna's Scarf, Leman Russ, Anna w/ Bow

You agree that you should gather some supplies before you go, but politely decline the money. They agree to meet at the city gate in two hours, which will give everyone plenty of time to finish what they need to do. When you separate, Anna taps you on the shoulder and holds out a canvas pouch. She tells you that she scraped together 10 gold pieces, and that you are welcome to them if you like. She looks embarrassed to be offering something like this.

"Leman Russ and I have been earning it by chasing rats and helping shopkeepers. I spent all the silver and copper ones on candy and treats for us, but I kept the gold ones. You should have them because you're my... you know."

A) Accept kindly. This will be very helpful
B) Decline. That's her hard earned money, she can use it how she likes
C) Decline, and tell her to keep saving. That's more money than you've ever had, and it could be good to save it for her future.

You tell her to put her purse away. She earned that money herself, and it belongs only to her. You take what you have and head toward the shops. You spend a few minutes browsing, looking at several types of fine robes and armor, when suddenly you feel a large hand on your shoulder. You turn to see a familiar face, with a vibrant mustache. Greeting you is the knight you saved along the road over a year ago, when you first came to the city. You spend a few minutes catching up, and you find out that he's retired from duty and gone into metalworks. He spends most of his time fixing horseshoes and wagon tongues, but his son is learning and wants to be a smith for the Holy Palace, to repay their kindness. Should you:

A) Ask if he can spare a set of mail for you and Anna. It will be great to have.

You tell him that Anna is a girl you took in as your companion, and about how you have been helping to raise and train her. You tell him the stories of your time together, such as the bandit encounter, and training together in the Palace. He is very interested in meeting her, and invites you to his home for tea. You accept, seeing as you still have plenty of time, and go to collect Anna and Leman Russ. You find them sooner than expected, looking at some flowers in a shop just around the corner. You tell her about the visit and she gladly comes along.

The four of you walk a couple of blocks to a metalworks, where in the front sits a thin young man with toned arms, hammering away at a hunk of iron. He tells you he is the son of the former knight, and that he has been working hard to become skilled enough to work in the Palace to repay you someday. All of you head inside the house for tea, where you meet the knight's wife. She is a middle aged woman, just about as old as him, with laugh lines. There is also a toddler, a boy no more than 4, playing at the table. You greet them politely and sit down as she prepares the tea and some crackers. The knight's son asks you to retell some of the stories of your work, especially the battle in southtown. Do you:

You politely refrain from the retelling, saying that talk of battle has no place in a home as warm and peaceful as this. The knight agrees, admitting to never having told his sons a single story of his time in service. Although he does lean over to you and mention that the tales of heroics may have been helpful in the conception of his boys.

After a lovely tea, you notice that it is almost time to head to the town gate. You thank them for their hospitality, as does Anna, and you offer to see yourselves out. Before you go however, the knight asks you to come out and see his work. He shows you to the workshop, full of nails, horeshoes, and other assorted metal builds. You admire them briefly, and he tells you to wait while he fetches one more thing. He returns shortly with two rolled masses of chain. The large one, he says, was his while he served. It is worn, but sturdy. Noticing that you still carry his old sword, he claims it is only right for you to take this as well. The remains of his armor was sold off to fund their new business, but he kept this just in case. He also unrolls a second set, much smaller. It was to be his son's, when he joined the service, but he gave up that dream when his father came home from the battle with the basilisk. He offers them both to you, as a final payment for his life, and the time he now gets to spend with his family. Do you:

You graciously accept the kind offer, and show Anna your gifts. She is curious as to how exactly the mail works, and you explain that it goes on under your robes to protect you from blows. She seems shocked by the idea of cold metal against your bare chest, but you correct her and say that it goes over your normal clothes. She asks to change in the washroom, while you disrobe and don the mail in the workshop. It's not as heavy as it would seem, and is quite flexible. Anna comes out soon, looking less curvy due to the mail. She remarks that it isn't quite as snug as her clothes normally are. You say shell just have to get used to them, and make your final goodbyes. When you reach the town gate, Diane and Andre are already waiting. You tell them about your gifts and Diane compliments how rugged you look with the chain sleeves emerging from your robes. The four of you set off on the road, keeping in step. By sundown, you've made excellent time, and Andre says that you could hunt if you like. Do you:

You tell Anna to stay and set up camp while you, Russ and Andre go hunting. She agrees and begins unpacking your things. The three of you have a race to the treeline, in which Russ is clearly unaware of the competition or else he's pass you in an instant. Inside, you begin setting snares in good locations. You quickly that while he may quite adept in melee, Andre has a few things to learn about moving quietly in the woods. You give him some pointers and he learns fast. You start conversing about your lives as inquisitors. He tells you that when he first started, he planned to be a cleric, but when he sister joined the church, he chose to become an inquisitor so that he would be able to request her aid in missions. He tells you about a few of the battles he's taken part in, including one possibly embellished story about him taking on an entire circle of mages with only one saber and a broken arm. While you chat, Leman Russ flushes out the boar you'd been tracking, barking and chasing it around in tight circles to tire it out. Do you:

You wait for the perfect moment, as Leman Russ leads the boar right under the branch you're perched on, and draw Dad's knife. Right when the board is about to run under the branch, you let your weight go, and fall from the branch as delicately as a leaf. You land right in the boar's path, and when it attempts to come to a stop, you grab it's tusk and cut it's throat. Andre claps and whistles as you dust yourself off. He commends how far your skill s are coming. Together you skin the boar, leave the entrails, and bring the cuts back to camp. Anna and Diane are deathly quiet when you return, but Andre perks them up with his trademark cheer. You cook up the boar, and leave the scraps for Russ. When all is said and done, it comes time for bed, and Andre proposes a watch. Anna asks to go first, but you can already see bags forming under her eyes. Do you:

You tell Anna that she needs her rest more than anyone here, and send her to bed. She does so, leaving and you agree to take first watch with Russ. As everyone gets to sleep, you lay by the campfire, staring at the stars. You ponder for the two hours assigned to you, and eventually wake Andre for his shift. Sleep is rough that night, and when you awake, you're certain you had a nightmare.

The following morning, you all complete morning prayers, even Russ who has taken to stretching out with you as you praise the sunrise. You hit the road after a quick bite, and make it to the remains of the warcamp just after noon. It's smaller than you thought it would be. It consists mostly of straw and wood huts, held together by rope and luck. There are walls cut from logs that provide cover to the people inside. Andre suggests simply taking a flame to it and letting the ashes blow away in the breeze, but Anna thinks there might be something worth seeing inside. Do you:

With weapons ready, you enter and begin peeking around. Russ sniffs out some provisions, but they smell too foul to eat. As wipe grease and blood from your hands, you hear a shriek from behind you. You qhip around to see two orcs have somehow snuck up on your group, and are targeting Anna and Diane. Andre sees too, but is a deal farther away from the girls than you, and Leman Russ is nowhere in sight. You draw your sword and rush in. Do you:

You rush in to block the orc grasping for Diane, and retort with a slice across the forearm. He howls in pain, stepping back and allowing you to capitalize and deliver a grand kick to his stomach. He falls to the ground, and you finish him off. Then you turn your attention to Anna, who is busy dodging the orc assailing her, swinging his half broken club in wide arcs. You run toward him, but he spots you and brings down his club over your head. You manage to parry with our sword, which cuts straight through the flimsy wood and leaves him with only a hunk of splinters. Then you feel something heavy hit your back, and look up to see that Andre has used your shoulder as a step to leap up and drive his sabers into the orc's chest, sending both of them to the dirt. Andre gets back to his feet and warns you to be on the lookout for more.

Sure enough, more orcs come out of the woodwork. 3 to be exact. Andre marks the largest one, and tells you to take one as well. Do you go for:

You reach for your belt and draw Dad's knife, ready to pounce on your enemy as soon as you get the chance. That chance comes in the form of Leman Russ, who arrives and begins tearing at the orc's ankle. The orcs kicks him off with little effort, but the distraction gives you enough time to leap onto the orc's back and begin plunging your knife into his neck. Over and over you stab,. until he falls to his knees with a guttural noise in his throat. You roll off of him and pick your sword back up, while wiping your knife on his clothes and sliding it back home. Over at the gate, Diane and Andre speak, and Anna is already rushing toward you. She throws all her weight into you, which almost sends you back to the bloody soil. but you stay standing. She clutches at your robes and buries her face in your chest. Andre and Diane follow, explaining how she planted three arrows in the orc before it slowed down, and then had to hit it with a stone before it finally gave up. Anna herself seemed to not want to emerge from your bosom. Do you:

A) Give her a moment to collect herself
B) Tell her to calm down, and that you need treatment badly

You place a hand no Anna's head, and another around her shoulder and speak softly to her. You assure her that everything is alright now, and that nothing bad is going to happen to any of you. She sobs for a minute, and you let her get it out before she pulls away and goes to sit with Leman Russ. Diane notices that you are bleeding, and offers to patch you up, but you tell her that you'll handle it yourself. With your Holy Symbol in hand, you cast Heal on the wound in your side. The pain fades and the feeling of blood trickling down your side ceases. You feel fight as a fiddle again.

Anna and Leman Russ are already checking the remaining huts when they call out to you. You run over and look inside the hut they've opened to see the problem. There, wrapped up in filthy blankets and stirring gently are two tiny orcs. They are young, far too young to even walk. Upon entering the hut and seeing them, Andre draws his sabers and goes over to terminate them. Will you:

A) Stop him
B) Talk the girls outside

You reach out and grab Andre's shoulder before he gets too close to them. He turns and asks what the problem is, and you tell him you don't think it's right to slay a child who has committed no crimes. Andre shakes his head.

"This happens a lot with newer members. You have to understand that even if we let them live, they'll only starve or be eaten out here in the wilderness. And even if we took them back with us, the people of the town or any other town would never accept them. Giving them a quick and painless death is a greater mercy than they or their kind deserve."

You look back at Anna and Diane. Diane seems to be okay with this turn of events, but Anna is looking to you, wondering what the right answer is. Do you:

You hang your head, but feel in your heart that Andre is right. Being an adherent to the Father or Light isn't always about brotherhood and glory. You see now that mercy comes in many forms. You tell Diane to take Anna outside, and the both of them leave. You and Andre dispatch the three orcs, and say a prayer to the Father of Light, asking for guidance and forgiveness.

After all is said and done, you set fire to the camp, and everything in it. Among the things you found inside, you find a pair of bracers that just need a good scrubbing to be usable, as well as 100 gold which you split evenly among the group. As you watch the bonfire blaze against the night sky, you begin to wonder if you truly made the right choice.

About two days later, you arrive back in town. Andre and Diane head back to the Holy Palace, but before they depart Diane tells you to meet her in the study again tonight if you have time. Anna and Russ seem weary from the trip, and Anna still seems troubled by your mission, but she hasn't attempted to speak about it. Do you:

A) Head home and rest. Anna and Russ need it, and whatever Diane wants to discuss can wait.
B) Take Anna out on the town to get her mind of things, and maybe try to loosen her lips a bit

You walk Anna and Russ home, and tell Anna to wash up and get some food. She complies silently, looking away when you speak to her. You yourself make your way to the clerics' study, where Diane told you to meet her. Inside are the same high shelves and wooden tables, as well as several clerics reading the tome contained there. You find Diane sitting at a table near the back, pouring over a particularly thick looking volume with what appears to be a passing interest, as if she were just killing time. You approach and greet her, and she invites you to sit. She says that it's good to reread the scriptures now and again, to keep the context fresh in your mind. Once again she shares a book with you, even despite you smelling quite ripe. After an hour or so of reciting the verses from before, she turns to you and asks why you've chosen to join the church. You explain your desire to be a great hero and help the world, which she finds amusing. She then asks why you always travel with Anna. You respond:

A) I feel responsible for her. I took her in when she had no one.
B) I'm not sure. I just enjoy having her around.
C) Someone needs to keep an eye on her, and keep her out of trouble.

Diane nods in understanding. You continue reading verses for a while longer, until you get too hungry to focus. You thank her for her help, and head to the mess hall for something to eat. After, you run into the bishop on the way to the garden. He is surprised to see you, saying that he just ran into Anna. He also notices the look of worry on your face. Do you:

A) Tell him about the incident at the warcamp
B) Only tell him that you're having a crisis of morality

You recount the events of the mission, and the choice you had to make there. He strokes his snowy beard and ponders your words for a moment. You stand there in silence, waiting for his reply for what feels like hours. Then he looks you in the eye and speaks, "When I was a paladin, this city was constantly under attack by bandits and tribes every winter, when the wild grew bare from cold. I fought in countless battles and skirmishes from the day I donned my armor. Side by side with my brothers I struck down many men and even women who would see this city and it's people collapse from famine and illness. And one day I had much the same dilemma as you. I asked the bishop then, if it was truly righteous to slay the hungry for seeking food, even if they wanted to slay others for it. He told me that laws were set by gods, and given to men to raise them above the beasts of the land. He told me that cooperation and trust were the pillars of all society. This was all he told me. He did not tell you whether my actions were right or wrong, but left it for me to decide. I decided that I would protect the people of this city from harm, as best I could until the day I died. So I suppose I must tell you that there is no true right in the world. There is only law, passed down by gods or made by your own hand." Before you can speak again, he turns and leaves. You stand in silence a while longer, then head to the bath, and off to bed.

The next morning comes and goes, and you meet Anna in the garden for practice. While you spar, she asks what you talked about with Diane the previous night. While parrying her strikes, you respond:

A) Just reading some texts. She says it helps to review
B) We actually talked about you for a while

You tell her that she only wanted to review some texts to make sure you're keeping up. Anna seems to accept this. You continue to parry her blows for a while, when she asks you if you wouldn't mind seriously sparring for just a while. You agree, as long as she's willing to take a handicap. You'll go until you strike her once, or she strikes you 3 times, for her own safety. She complies and you take positions. The both of you bow, assume your stances, and begin. Right off the bat, you see how her speed has improved when she lunges and jabs your in the stomach with her training sword. You rub the spot and prepare again, more cautious this time. She comes at you and your parry and sidestep most of her blows. This keeps up until she manages to strike your hand and then your shoulder. Through the pain you must admire her skill. You return to positions for the final bout, and she comes at you again. This time, you fully focus on her movements and keep her attacking for nearly 10 solid minutes. Finally she tries a desperate lunge at you, which leaves her wide open to a counter. Will you:

A) Disarm her and take the match

Getting tired of this charade, you drop your guard long enough for her to land a grand blow to the back of your head. This has the unfortunate side effect of causing you to briefly black out. You awake with blurred vision, laying in the grass. You can make out Anna's voice as well as Russ' whimpering nearby. Anna seems to be apologizing for something, but the ringing in your ears prevents you from hearing correctly. Once you snap out of your daze, you see Anna's face over yours, and see tears welling up in her eyes, which then fall and splash you in the forehead. To your left, Leman Russ is licking your hand and whimpering. Anna continues to apologize through sniffles. You respond:

A) Calm down, I'm fine. You just hit harder than I expected
B) We aren't going to do that again soon
C) What's the matter with you? You could have killed me with a swing like that!

You assure her that you're fine, and you just need a second to gather yourself. She wipes her nose and gets back to her feet. She tells you that she's going out to the market with Russ, to get something. You acknowledge and tell her to be back before dark. As she runs off, you feel the back of you head and find that a lump is already forming. Time to head to the infirmary.

With that, I really need sleep, guys. If the thread dies by the time I start up again in the morning, I'll make a new one. Sorry to cut you off like this but it's like 3am for me. I'll try to finish up the story maybe within the next couple days though.
