You are Captain WILLIAM PIERCE, a combat rescue officer of the United States Air Force. You just recently met the new witches you were going to be working with, Tarin and Janice. While they both seemed to have a quirk or two, they seemed to be solid enough teammates to you. And now arrived in Europe, where the majority of the fighting is taking place.

---

You sit back and sigh as you watch the German countryside zip by underneath you as your newly assigned Pave Hawk buzzes through the sky. On either side, you've flanked by a pair of witches, Janice and Tarin. Janice gives you a little wave every time you look her way while Tarin keeps a vigilant eye on both the air and the ground for potential threats.

Meanwhile, inside the Pave Hawk itself, it's just you, Red, and the rest of the crew, which consisted of four men. First were the pilot and copilot, Bullseye and Snips. There was the Crew Chief, Hoskins, and a regular airman named Rex. You didn't really have much time to talk to them beforehand, as you've literally met them just this morning.

So far, things were a bit quiet. You weren't due to reach your standby position for another five minutes.

You decide to review the mission with Red, since this was literally only her second outing into a live combat zone. Janice and Tarin at least had combat experience and knew what to expect. You turn to your subordinate.

"Okay Red, we're going to go over this one more time." You say. "We're going to be part of a quick reaction force today. Do you know what that means?"

"It means we'll be on short notice to respond to emergencies." Red says.

"Right." You nod. "That means we might get called out to anything. Finding downed pilots, extracting wounded from a hot LZ, providing medical assistance to units in active combat, the works."

"I got it, Cap." Red says, patting her CAR-15. "That's why we've got these babies, right?"

"Yeah, but priority is to provide medical assistance. Let the grunts worry about the shooting." You remind her.

"Alright, we're here." Bullseye announces over the radio.

You turn your head and see that you've indeed reached your assigned staging point. In the sky, you can already see several fellow Pave Hawks and a couple of Pave Lows orbiting the area. It's a simple matter for Bullseye to slip your Pave Hawk into the formation.

"Rescue Ranger Five, nice to see you join us." You hear a new voice buzz in your radio. "This is Rescue Ranger One. We'll be coordinating assignments for individual flights. Standby."

"Roger that." You respond.

You then instinctively tune over to the CSAR channel. Already, the channel is buzzing with requests from all manner of units asking or demanding for aid. You did not envy RR1's job of having to sift through and review every request. The vast majority of cases could be handled by regular MEDEVAC birds, though you suppose the guys on the ground probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference.

"Rescue Rangers, we've got three priority calls." Rescue Ranger One announces. "I'm updating the tactical net right now."

With that, your helo peels off from the main formation and starts heading East, towards the front line. You check the data you got over the tactical net again to confirm the number of friendly forces in your area. You confirm that there's a platoon of Abrams tanks with two tank witches and some limited artillery support. The Army is also sending in a pair of Apaches, but they would be arriving well after you, so you couldn't count on their help.

"We're getting close Captain, would you like us to provide air support or keep an eye for aerial threats?" Janice asks.

>>
>>28751220
Well, I assume the apaches will be bringing backup.

The point is that we need to conserve magic. That's why a guy like Price is here any serious wounds that can't be patched up by normal means can be half way cured by the witches leaving enough for him to fix up so that way the witches don't expend so much magic.

"Just stay up high and keep an eye out for enemy birds." You say. "The Abrams should be more than enough to handle any ground threats."

You see Janice nod. She and Tarin then both gain altitude until they're both out of sight. Up ahead, you can see smoke and muzzle flashes from the battle. Things looked pretty rough out there. You check your tactical data for any info on the enemy composition, but all you can get is "enemy mechanized force". No indication of numbers or positions. There was always the possibility of AA assets in the area, though that was why your helo was equipped with countermeasures.

They worked. Most of the time.

"How do you want us to go in, sir?" Bullseye asks.

"Low and fast, Bullseye. We don't want the Russians to see us coming." You say.

"Roger that."

With that, your Pave Hawk goes even LOWER, to the point where you can swear the treetops are grazing the belly of your craft. The helo then tilts forward as it picks up speed. Within a handful of seconds, you get a direct line of sight on the battle. Up ahead of you, you can see four Abrams tanks, or at least tanks that roughly resembled Abrams, in a rough triangle formation, cannons firing as fast as they could cycle. You see they've smarty set up position next to a thick forested area to prevent from getting flanked by the Russian armor they were trading fire with. At this angle, you had a hard time telling what the Abrams were shooting at, but you assume either T-72s or T-80s. Either way, judging from the plumes of smoke, the Abrams have been doing rather well for themselves.

Immediately behind the Abrams, you could see a cluster of humanoid shapes, no doubt the location of the wounded witch.

You quickly check your tactical data to confirm the Abrams platoon's callsign.

"Thundercats, this is Rescue Ranger Five. We hear you've got a wounded sparklie?"

"Rescue Ranger Five, this is Thundercat One. Confirm one wounded sparklie. Good to hear you're here."

"Roger that. We're coming in from the West, so check your fire."

"Bullseye, take off and wait for us to call you back." You inform you pilot.

"Roger that. Good luck."

With that, the Pave Hawk lifts off again and heads west to relative safety. You turn back to the mission at hand and double time it to the Abrams formation. As you reach it, you can see a couple tankers kneeling over a girl laying on her back, applying pressure to a nasty looking wound on her abdomen. A raven haired tank witch stood guard above them, the air around her shimmering as she keeps her shield at full power.

"Glad to see you guys here." One of the tankers sighs, though he doesn't take his arms off her wound. "She's been hit pretty bad."

Without wasting any time, you and Rex unpack your medical kits and start snapping on surgical gloves.

"What can you tell me, soldier?" You ask.

"Took a couple direct shell hits." The tanker explains. "We think some of the fragments managed to punch through her shield."

"Looks like it." Rex says as he performs a quick physical examination. "Superficial cut to the forehead, a few shallow cuts to the arms and legs. It looks like the big problem is the abdomen."

"I agree." You nod as you look at where Rex points out all the various injuries. "Definitely got a damaged kidney on our hands, might have even hit the liver, if we're really unlucky."

You then check the downed witch's vitals. Her breathing was shallow and her pulse slightly erratic, but she was still definitely alive.

"I think I can do this." Red says. "I think I can heal her up enough to get back in the fight. Or do you want me to just stabilize her?"

"We just need to stabilize her." You say as Rex administers some general painkiller into the downed witch's arm. "And then we call in Bullseye and get the hell out of here."

Suddenly, the air rumbles as a shell hit slams into one the Abrams, but fails to penetrate its front armor. The Abrams' cannon roars in response.

"Rescue Ranger, you better hurry it up. I don't know how much longer we can hold this position."

"Copy that, Thundercat One." You say. "Red, how fast?"

"Just give me a couple of minutes." Red says as she places her hands over the wounded witch.

Meanwhile, you look up to the second tank witch. However, she hasn't taken her eyes off the forest for a single second.

"Something wrong?" You ask.

"I don't like trees, especially in groups." The witch mutters. "Never know what's in there."

"You're saying there might be infantry in there?" You ask.

"Thundercat Two, are you getting anything on IR?" You ask.

"Our IR system is getting some kind of interference. Can't see shit through it." The tank responds.

Wonderful. Well, no sense letting the Russians set up their ambush. Best case, you mess up their plans. Worst case, you shoot up an empty forest.

"Contacts in the forest!" You yell and begin pumping controlled bursts from your CAR-15 into the trees. Rex joins in with his own CAR-15 and your fellow tank witch and Thundercat Two follow up with their cannons.

Almost immediately, you hear the very familiar bark of AKs as tracers lances out wildly from the trees. It's obvious you caught them by surprise, given how inaccurate their fire is. You and Rex take cover behind Thundercat Two and keep up your fire.

"Red Sparkle sighted!" Thundercat Two calls out.

"What?!" You risk peeking you head out and indeed, you can see a Russian tank witch at the treeline trying to draw a bead on Thundercat Two.

"Thundercat Two, pop smoke and evade!" You yell. "Thundercats, your position is compromised. Suggest you fall back immediately! Red! Get the wounded on a stretcher and get her ready to move ASAP!"

"Got it!" Red starts packing up her gear while Rex rushes back to help lift the wounded witch onto the stretcher.

Meanwhile, Thundercat Two pops smoke and reverses away at an angle. A shell sails through the smoke and lands in the dirt right where the tank used to be, showering you grass and dirt. The rest of the Thundercats begin popping smoke as well to cover their retreat. However, they make sure to move slowly enough to ensure they're still covering Red and Rex, who are running as fast they can west. You then key your own squadron frequency.

"Bullseye, we need you come to in right now. Be advised, LZ is hot! Janice, we got an enemy Sparkle, request you come assist!"

Both Janice and your pilot affirm in unison. You keep pace with the retreating Thundercat Two, unloading carbine fire into the forest. Your friendly raven haired tank witch keeps up the fire as well, until you see the smoke part as the Russian tank witch charges forward, an almost primal and predatory smile on her face.

"Oi! Bitch!" You yell as you unload your CAR-15 into the Russian witch to get her attention. "Is that all you've got?!"

The Russian witch then spins around to face you. You start moving away in a direction that would take her out of Red's and the Thundercats' line of retreat and keep firing as you back up.

"Come on, is that all you've got?"

The Russian witch seems to pause to consider her options. This gives your friendly tank witch a chance to fire off a cannon shot, but it bounces off the Russian witch's shield. Almost as an afterthought, the Russian witch swings her cannon around and fires back, the shell landing at the feet of your friendly tank witch and knocking her off her feet. The Russian witch then turns back to you, utters something in Russian, and begins to close the distance. She swings out her left arm, which deploys into some wicked looking claw-like weapon.

Okay, maybe this wasn't such a great idea.

You fire the last of your clip at the Russian witch and see her shield visibly shatter. No doubt weakened already from the previous hits. Unfortunately, you couldn't exactly follow up this development with an empty gun.

All the while she's getting closer.

Calling upon all of your survival instincts and reflexes you had attained brawling with Bree in your childhood, you manage to dive out of the way of the Russian witch's attack at literally the last second. You literally feel the power claw swipe at you. In fact, it shears off your combat pack, sending its contents flying everywhere throughout the field.

Without missing a beat, you roll on the ground and pull out your sidearm and take aim, but unfortunately the Russian witch seems to have predicted your move. She repositions her left arm so that the massive power claw acts as a impromptu shield, blocking her center mass. However, she doesn't move, most likely waiting for her shields to recharge. You have the feeling that once that happens, you're dead meat.

Taking a deep breath, you try to take aim for the Russian witch's head with your M1911. However, the Russian witch sees what you're doing and starts bobbing and weaving, making it harder for you to hit her. Your first few shots either miss or ping uselessly off her strikers. By your count, you've got one shot left, and it looked like the other witch knew that too, as she starts closing in again.

You decide to take the shot. Taking a deep breath, you try to relax, aiming carefully and adjusting for the Russian witch's movement. Exhaling, you take the shot. It was a clean headshot.

Or, at least, it would've been a clean headshot if the Russian witch didn't anticipate it and raise her left arm ever so slightly in order to deflect it away from her head. If there was any saving grace, it was that in the act of using her left arm to shield herself, the Russian couldn't deploy her claw to use against you. However, she improvises by backhanding you with her armored gauntlet, catching you directly in the chest with it. Now, you've been hit by a lot of things in your life. Your sister countless times, full diving tackles in high school football, overzealous trainees in close quarters combat drills, and one one occasion a relatively slow moving Hummvee. This hit pretty much dwarfed all of them.

You're pretty sure you blacked out for a second or two, because you don't even remember the actual impact. One second you're standing, and the next you're lying on your back trying to breath. Your medic training instinctively kicks in to analyze your injuries, and you're guessing most, if not all, your ribs were smashed in that impact. No doubt you've got some serious internal wounds, too. Then something blocks the sun from your eyes and you look up to see the Russian witch standing over you. She grins and says something in Russian. Even if you could understand the language, you were too dizzy and blinded with pain to comprehend what she was saying anyways. She then bends down, grabs one of your legs, and starts to drag you back toward the forest.

Your heart freezes when you see Cap go down. He just had to go play hero and try and draw off the attention of the Russian witch. Well, it worked. It fucking worked, and maybe a little too well. You see the Russian witch bend down and begin dragging Cap's body away towards the forest, which was now swarming with Russian infantry.

Suddenly, you see the still active Thundercat witch tackle the Russian witch, sending the both of the rolling through the grass. The Russian infantry try to intervene Janice then swoops down, raking them with automatic fire.

All the while, Cap's broken and battered body is laying there in the field.

Behind you, you can see three little blips in the distance, no doubt your Pave Hawk and the Apache reinforcements. They still at least forty five seconds out. Next to you, Rex is too busy keeping an eye on the wounded witch's vitals to pay attention to you.

It's quite a long way, and this time you don't have a quartet of Abrams tanks to shield you from enemy fire, so you concentrate, channeling you energy into your portable focus to create a shield around yourself, which already does its work by deflecting a few stray shots.

Up ahead, you can see the two tank witches still brawling. Neither of them seems to be able to get an advantage. Meanwhile, Janice continues suppressing the Russian infantry, raking the treeline with M16 bursts and the occasional 40mm grenade. There was no sign of Tarin.

You slide to a stop next to Cap and your stomach drops. Things looked a whole lot worse up close. It looked like his chest cavity was literally punched in. It didn't even look like he was alive.

"Cap! Cap! Can you hear me?" You say, desperately checking his wrist for a pulse.

You see Cap's head turn ever so slightly and his other arm gives you the thumbs up sign.

"Idiot." You say, not sure whether to laugh or cry or do a little of both. You go prone to reduce your target profile and place both your hands over Cap's chest. You close your eyes and concentrate, gathering as much healing magic as you could and channeling it into Cap. You keep it up until you start to feel dizzy, which was a sign you were close to depleting your powers. Checking Cap's vitals again, you notice they're stronger and he's definitely breathing regularly now, but he was in no condition to fight still.

At this point, Tarin had finally linked back up with you, making a rather dramatic entrance by swooping down and decapitating the Russian platoon commander. Combined with the loss of their leader and the quickly approaching Apaches unloading 30mm cannon rounds into the treeline, and the Russians break and run.

The Russian witch, seeing that the momentum of the battle was swinging into the Americans' favor, kicks the American tank witch off her and reverses back towards her lines, taking advantage of the Thundercats' smokescreen to shield her retreat.

Meanwhile, you pop a smoke grenade and drop it next to Cap. You then feel the downwash of the Pave Hawk's rotors as it repositions to pick you and Cap up. Hoskins and Rex leap out and put Rex on a stretcher before hoisting him into the helo next to the wounded witch. Still dizzy, you stumble your way back into the helo, with Rex giving you a helping hand.

"Orders?" Bullseye asks.

"Get us out of here." Janice says as she hovers next to the Pave Hawk. It had been previously agreed that Janice would be the unit XO, and therefore next in the chain of command.

"Roger that." Bullseye says as the Pave Hawk lifts off again. It turns west, headed back to the nearest aid station.

"Rescue Ranger One, this is Rescue Ranger Five." Janice reports over the radio. "Downed Sparkle has been extracted. Be advised, our CO is also a casualty."

"Acknowledged, Rescue Ranger Five." RR1 says. "Is your unit still combat effective?"

You see Janice turn to you, as if asking for your opinion. You try to consider your options, but your head is still spinning from your heavy magic use.

>>28755824
Here we go

We're not fucking dead. It seems like whenever there's a negative result to any choice, the entire readership turns into a shitstorm.

Hindsight is great but we NEVER have any idea where exactly a choice will lead us, so can we stop before this turns into another "We should have saved the carrier but everyone but me is brain-dead".
>>
>>28755867
what part of "trying to shoot a witch with a fucking metal claw" sounds wise?
>>

Real Talk: The carrier "controversy" is manufactured.

This isn't anywhere on the same level. We were given pretty clear hints that the tank witch was dangerous.
>>
>>28755863
>>28755865

Was actually thinking of the 'acting as a decoy against the witch' thing. Not this one. Especially since the anon said 'again'. I felt that was the right decision.

>>
>>28755867
Yes, lets shot at witch with a pistol! This is great fucking idea! Yep, not like like witches don't have enhanced reflexes or anything! Not like she has armor to protect herself or anything! NOPE!

All it takes is one look to know it was time to fucking run but people decided to be stupid. Here you go. This is what happens when you decide to be stupid.
>>
>>28755873
And could you tell me what would have happened if we didn't distract her?

I'm just tired of every time there's a negative consequence to a choice, everyone starts shit flinging. It's impossible for us to win them all so let's stop blowing up when things go wrong. Nothing we can do now but deal with it.
>>
>>28755898

Its not like a normal human can outrun a tank witch, anon.

And exposing our backs? Our spine would be in several pieces after being clawed.

No, the only thing we could do would have been to draw out the fight and buy time for reinforcements.

>>
>>28755941
And it's done now, hornet. We don't get any reloads, what's happened has happened so let's deal with the problem at hand rather than bitching about something that's happened.
>>

Maybe if people put a little thought into their votes instead of going in half-cocked all the time we wouldn't be here every few threads in these type of quest.

>>28755956
so the same mistakes could be made over and over?

This is assuming Merc doesn't call this the last thread or such like he did with VMQ2 when it was infested with idiots and waifufags.
>>
>>28755930

It did.

We're not dead and reinforcements saved our ass. Engaging a witch one on one as a normal human is usually a death sentence, that he survived long enough to be rescued means it worked.
>>
>>28755956
It's not done until after the consequences actually hit home, though.

I get you don't want to be called an idiot for acting like an idiot, but sometimes you gotta call a spade a spade.
>>
>>28755978
And put us combat ineffective because we had to get our heal witch to pump us with magic. We're out of this fight when we shouldn't have been.
>>
>>28755741
You pause for a second to catch your breath and take in the situation. First, your CO was totally thrashed and near death, even with all the healing you applied him. Second, you felt like you were on the verge of passing out.

"I...I don't think we can go on like this." You say quietly.

Janice merely nods sadly and relays the news.

"We're combat ineffective at this time."

"Roger that. Transfer the wounded to Ramstein and await further orders."

The ride back to Ramstein is just extremely quiet. Nobody really wanted to talk. Occasionally, Bullseye would speak up to confirm nav coordinates with Snips, and Hoskins and Rex would periodically check on the wounded. Hell, even Janice would occasionally fly alongside the Pave Hawk and contribute a bit of healing energy to Cap, which was a great risk to herself considering she needed to have enough magic to make the trip back to Ramstein.

Finally, you manage to return to the airbase, where your two wounded passengers are quickly whisked away to the base hospital. With your operations done for the day, Bullseye powers down the Pave Hawk and Hoskins starts coordinating with the ground crew to get maintenance started. Rex just gives you a emphatically sad look and leaves for his quarters.

You also see a jeep approaching, with a very concerned looking Colonel sitting in the backseat. No doubt the Colonel Anderson Cap told you about. He was most likely here to debrief you. However, you had half a mind to avoid him for now.

You sigh and stay put. You might as well explain things to Anderson. Tarin and Janice, now out of their strikers, join you as well. Anderson finally reaches the landing pad, and watches as the ambulances drive away.

"Okay girls, give to me straight." Anderson says. "What happened? Don't worry, none of this will be official just yet."

So, all three of you tell your separate sides of the story. Tarin had spent the majority of the battle relaying targeting information to NATO artillery units to destroy the BTRs. She then heard Janice requesting assistance, which is when she arrived to help fight off the Russian infantry.

Janice had spent the majority of the battle keeping an eye out for Russian fighters or helicopters. She only realized something was wrong when Cap radioed for assistance, and she made full speed back to the battle. By the time she got back, she saw the Russian witch already engaged, Cap wounded, and infantry advancing, so she was forced to prioritize suppressing the Russian infantry.

Meanwhile, since you saw the whole thing, you tell Anderson everything. About how you were treating the wounded witch, how he saw the Russian ambush coming, and how he stood up to the Russian tank witch when she got into the middle of your formation and distracted her long enough for the rest of you to pull out. Then he took the hit and went down, leading you to go and evac him.

"....I see." Anderson nods as he takes in all the testimony. "I'll need to consult with the rest of your crew as well as the Thundercats in order to confirm the details. You're to remain on base and await further orders."

"Yes sir." The three of you salute as Anderson makes his exit.

"What are you going to do now, Red?" Janice asks.

"I'm... I'm going to go see Cap." You say. "Doesn't feel right to just leave him alone in there, right?"

"I see." Janice nods sadly. "I'll go back to the barracks to inform Breeana of the news. I doubt she'll take it well."

"I'm going to go try and find some SF buddies of mine." Tarin says simply. "For... reasons."

With that, the three of you split up. You manage to wave down a passing Humvee, and the driver is nice enough to drop you off at the hospital. You consult with the doctors there and find out that considering Cap's position at as a Combat Rescue Officer, he's actually been placed rather high in the priority list for healwitch treatment. You inform them that you're also a healwitch and you'll do what you can. Considering you were a witch and a healwitch on top of that, the doctors see no reason to keep you away from Cap, since even they understood the need to minimize their magic use.

As you enter the room, you see a healwitch already inside tending to Cap's wounds. She informs you that they put him in a chemically induced coma to make the healing process go by easier, though it would take at least a week to fully repair all the damage.

You take a seat next to Cap and wait patiently.

---

Some time later, Janice and Tarin decided to pay Pierce a visit. However, when they entered the room, they found Red slumped over his body, both her hands on his chest, obviously trying to heal him up and falling asleep in the process. Janice and Tarin quietly draped a blanket over her and made their exit.

Sure, why not

-

"Frank Bishop is only missing in action, right?" Holly asked, her voice sounding funny with an ice pack pressed against her jaw.

"Yeah..." Chris said, adjusting the ice pack.

"I'm gonna see what I can do to help Spellcaster locate him."

"We've read all the reports Holly. I know you feel like garbage for what you said. I know YOU. You want to pay back a debt you think you owe to a witch. It's how you are with any one of us in the squadron, in the whole wing." The blonde shook her head sadly. "If he hasn't been reported in the retreating pocket ground forces, if he hasn't turned up wounded in any CASEVAC in Alaska, he either got moved to the lower 48, or he's...dead."

"We're not scheduled to be in the air until 1700. I've got the time to spare, so I'm gonna look."

"The hell you are, have me do it!" Chris cried. "I'm your XO, ASSIGN me a task that I alone am supposed to handle without you! For once! YOU need to get some sleep, all things considered. Take an extended crew rest. You know I can hold things down while you do!"

"Nope. Mind's made up." Holly shrugged the ice pack away from her. "Lets start by getting as much information on all CASEVAC flights that left the theater." She smiled sweetly at Chris. "Since you want to play runner so badly, gather up what you can, and bring it here. I've got to revise the overall flight schedule now that Spellcaster now that they've decided to rejoin us."

"I'm not leaving until that...witch delivers her flight plan." Chris crossed her arms and pouted in her seat.

"She's not gonna hit me again unless I give her a reason," Holly sighed. "Please get started on your assignment, Lieutenant Colonel."

"Yes ma'am..." Chris dragged herself towards the door, trying to look as pathetic as possible.

"And I'm the one that got decked! Get moving, you!"

-
>>
>>28756433
Reworking the schedule was easy enough. Spellcaster being (temporarily, she hoped) down one asset would make them come up short on pairings for now, but it meant that Holly could get other girls time off alert sooner. She didn't know what Kazanski did to be able to come back and confidently state her squadron's readiness, but was grateful for it nonetheless.

Just as she'd promised, Commander Kazanski came back with her suggested flight schedule, arriving once again with her familiar manifested.

"Making an entrance is your thing, huh Navy?" Holly put on a smile for show.

"There are no zoomie offices on a carrier to burst into. I take what I can get."

Awkwardness aside, Kazanski was surprisingly easy to work with on the flight plans, she'd even put herself on some of the less desirable assignments for the coming week. It fit nicely with what Holly had in mind, and there'd been no need for squabbling. Not that either witch would have tried. After having a chance to compartmentalize what had happened earlier, it was pretty embarrassing to both women as officers. Things were settled in less than ten minutes.

"Commander? A word before you go." Holly stopped the Navy witch as she reached the door.

"Yeah?"

"I am going to try and pull a favor to see if I can help you find out Bishop's real status."

"Colonel, that's...very kind of you." Kazanski looked as though she had just taken a good punch herself. "It's not necessary. Really! We're...neutral. I won't talk to anyone about what hap-"

"It absolutely is, and I'm doing it."

"You don't understand, MacLeod." She was almost pleading now. "I looked at every single transport that left Elemdorf with the wounded. He wasn't in any of them."

"Every single one?"
>>
>>28756443
"Other than the emergency C-20s that fled the pocket itself, but we would have heard something by now." Her head bowed towards the ground. "I'm sure I'm not the only one in my squadron who thinks this...but I'm not stupid. I know that he really could be- I have to put on a front for the others, but I can't ignore the possibilities." She covered her face with one hand. "I think it really might be best if we had to wait longer for the news. You really, really don't need to do this."

"Doesn't matter. I've got my XO looking into the transport flight destinations and their manifests now. The sooner it's resolved, the better."

"I hope so, Colonel."

"Alright, get outta here before Chris comes back. She doesn't like you much at the moment."

"Right." Now it was Kazanski's turn to look apologetic. "If you do manage to find him...regardless of how is, I have to know. Even if it's not what we want to hear. Don't hold back for our sake."

-

The sound of her office door opening again shocked Holly into consciousness. She'd started feeling extremely drowsy despite the coffee and breakfast, tired enough that when she'd last looked at her clock and saw that it was almost time for lunch, she thought that there was no way she was going to leave her comfy chair just yet. She could always grab something later from the witch rec room, right?

"I knew you'd be out like a light," Chris snickered. "I had Raker cook up some food for us, and while we're eating we can go over what I, emphasis on I, found out about transports from the tower records." She tossed a bag filled with something that smelled positively delicious. "While you were sleeping, of course."

"Nnngh..." Holly wiped the drool from her lips, blushing as she did. "Nobody else came in while I was away, did they?"
>>
>>28756464
"They'd have needed the key. I came back earlier, you were snoring by the way, closed your blinds, and let you get some rest." She placed some napkins near Holly. "It's 1300 on the dot, sleeping beauty. You were out for two hours."

"Okay, okay!" Now fully awake, Holly tore into the bag on her desk, finding what appeared to be a bread bowl filled with clam chowder.

"Raker did this?"

"Enough for the whole barracks."

"'kay." No complaints from Holly, Raker had to be one of the best cooks in the entire wing, maybe the whole base.

"So," Chris began her report, letting the Colonel start eating without her. "Kazanski was right about checking all the tranports and coming up empty. The ones she could have reasonably gotten to, with extended turnaround times, were C-141s and C-130s. They had to register who they were taking with them back to the lower 48, and I double checked thier manifests. Bishop wasn't on any of them."

"Sho we sheck emergeshee transhportsh, eashy," Holly said, the lid of the breadbowl still sticking out of her mouth a bit. She waited a moment to finish the bread off before continuing. "Short turnarounds, or birds that skipped Elemdorf entirely."

"Well, we could go through a list that I've compiled, and call each destination...or we could call up NavHosPearl."

"He's there? Thanks Chris, you did gre-"

"Hold on, hold on," Chris frowned. "There was a C-20 that left Elemdorf within minutes of ariving, and we don't have anything here that says who was on it, or why. They basically topped off their tanks and left for Hawaii immediately, didn't even take on any additional passengers." Holly nodded in between scoops of chowder, clearly enjoying it. God, this stuff had to be fresh, nothing premade about any of-

Holly stopped eating when she remembered what the Pearl Harbor medical facilities were best known for. Chris picked up on that right away, a grave expression on her face.

"Best burn center in the Pacific."
>>
>>28756491

thats it?
>>
>>28756491
Returning to her office, Holly had Chris take the leftovers away, locking the door behind her as she left. If things went badly, she didn't want Chris to be in the room for the aftermath. After sitting in her chair and taking a deep breath, Holly first put in a call to the phone exchange, to secure a priority line. It had taken more time than she'd have liked, but it wasn't because the phone exchange was arguing with her. Witch priviledge couldn't make clearing a line any faster.

A chill ran down her spine as she punched in the number to NavHos Pearl, waiting for dial tone to start. There was a knock on her door, and through the window she could see Chris on the other side. She pushed against the door to enter the office, and frowned when she realized the door was locked.

'Good luck,' she mouthed, before walking away.

"NavHos Pearl reception, Petty Officer Soros speaking." Proffessional boredom emanated from his voice.

"I'm-" her voice caught for a second, "Colonel Holly MacLeod, 3rd Witch Wing based out of Elemdorf, Alaska. I'm looking for a pilot who might have been sent your way, he's listed as MIA but-"

"Alright ma'am, I just need a name and unit, and I can try to see if he's here." The voice on the other end became much friendlier and happier. "From a mixed unit, I take it? Hope your boy's okay, Colonel."

"He's not- I'm not-" Another breath, and a failed attempt to drink water out of an empty glass. "Lt. Commander Frank Bishop, assigned to VF-3 Spellcaster."

"Ah, doing a favor for someone, huh? One moment ma'am."

The hold tone was some generic smooth jazz, which Holly imagined failed a hundred percent of the time to calm down someone looking for a good friend who'd been sent to Pearl from the front lines. And it went on. And on. Five minutes, ten, twenty. She was convinced that Soros had forgotten about her, or that she'd sent the Petty Officer on a search for a man who wasn't even there. The music cutting off and his return surprised her.

"Sorry about the wait ma'am," Soros dropped into a near whisper. "CINCPACFLT is here right now. Maybe related to your man?"

"N-no?"

"Huh. Transferring you to Burn Ward."

Holly wanted to melt through her seat. Being a witch and a Colonel in the Air Force meant precisely nothing to Admiral Richard Goddamned Nixon.

What the hell WAS Frank Bishop?

The transfer was over in a simple click. Holly could hear a throat clear on the other end.

"Am I speaking to the Colonel from Alaska?" An older woman's voice. 'A doctor, maybe?'

"Yes ma'am. I'm trying to find out the status of-"

"Frank Bishop, my dear?" The woman sounded utterly exhausted. "You have my apologies for the delay in speaking with you, there were some issues that needed to be worked out before we could talk."

"Ah...to whom am I speaking with, ma'am?" Holly felt bad for feeling annoyed, but she felt as though she was being given the runaround without knowing who she was dealing with.

"Georgette Mackintosh." Silence. "Are you still there? Hello?"
>>

If she could suddenly melt through the seat that instant, Holly hoped that the puddle that was her would have the good sense to evaporate immediately afterwards. She'd read all about this woman in school. She'd read the Witch Comix like any kid would have. Mom and Dad had a picture of them in the same pose as the famous photo showing Georgette Lemare and Nicholas Mackintosh in a romantic embrace, having both pictures framed and side by side in the living room back home.

"I'm sorry to bother you, ma'am," Holly managed to say without stammering. "I'm Colonel Holly MacLeod. It's a real honor ma'am."

"You called at a good time I suppose, so it is no trouble." A steady, soft beeping tone could be heard in the background. "Sadly, I may not have the best news for you."

'Oh no.'

"Frank is...well, not in a very good way."

"B-but aren't you-"

"I'm resting after my first session with the boy. I'm doing the best I can, but the truth of the matter is that time is what will determine his survival. Raw healing talent means very little, with cases so severe."

"But he's still alive?"

"In a manner of speaking, yes. It might take days. It might take weeks. I will do what I can, as best I can." The older woman managed to sound somewhat brighter with her last statement, a remnant of her youth coming through.

"Th-thank you ma'am!" Holly felt the weight of the world lifting off her shoulders. Somehow, she believed that despite the grim description from Georgette, things would be okay in the end. She could tell Spellcaster the good news. She could make things right with their Commander. She could apologize to Lt. Wells. When Bishop came back to active duty, she could thank him personally for the save over Tanana. She was sure that there were a lot of other witches who'd have more than a simple thanks to give him, and the other CAS pilots would probably buy him all the drinks forever-

"I'm just doing an old friend a favor, Ms. MacLeod."

"There's a whole squadron here worried sick about him. It's- It's been very hard on them!"

"I would suspect as much. Mixed units can be difficult for witches and those assigned to them. Losing friends is difficult, but potentially losing a love...has ruined some of the strongest witches, the most talented of pilots. I would not wish it on an enemy. Much kinder to simply..." Georgette's voice trailed off, a brief memory interrupting her.

"Agreed ma'am. I don't...really support the doctrine myself."

"Oh?"

"He got so badly hurt for his witches, and they've suffered just waiting for news. Is it really worth all this?" Holly asked plaintively. "I don't think-"

"It is, Colonel."

Holly had heard that tone of voice before from Mom, whenever she'd done or said something wrong as a kid. It never failed to make her feel like the smallest person in the world when she was eight, and even after she'd come home for leave to celebrate her promotion to Colonel, Mom could still use The Voice on Holly without fail.

"You're a Wing Commander, Ms. MacLeod?"

"Y-yes ma'am!"

"During the War, the 501st based out of Castle Barin was lead by Minna Dietlinde Wilcke. I suspect you and her would have started out having much in common. She saw the pilot that had been assigned to her squadron as the worst possible thing that could happen to her witches. It's said that the poor girl was driven almost mad by his antics." Georgette chuckled slightly at this. "It probably made life on Barin very interesting."
>>

As a child, Holly had watched a TV series that had focused on Minna, and the impossible, rude, obnoxious pilot she'd eventually fall in love with. There were historical inaccuracies all over the place, but it was perfect for rainy afternoons spent with Mom after school. As a gift for graduating flight school, Holly had recieved the whole series VHS collection, it was still in her room back home. She could remember dreaming about living a life exactly like that TV show, swept away by a brave pilot. Up until she actually went to flight school and learned a little bit more about how the real world worked.

"I'm sure you know how things turned out," Georgette continued. "A lovely little story in the middle of a very desperate war. But she was right, just as you are, to have concerns. You, just like she did, worry about the young girls and the women under your command, don't you? I can tell."

"Yes ma'am..."

"How many victories have you earned over Alaska, Colonel?"

"T-twenty eight."

"I see. Perhaps they came from their own mixed units. Or perhaps not. Perhaps only their families back home will mourn them. Maybe a young girl clenches tightly to a pillow, cursing the witch who took her comrade away. Perhaps their fellow pilots will raise one final toast to celebrate the those you've snuffed out, only allowing the bitterness and sorrow to show when no one else can see them." Georgette sounded as though she were fading away as she spoke. A voice in the background pleaded with her to end the call now and continue getting some rest.

"Young lady, you do everything you can to shield your girls away from a very grim reality of war, but you also do everything you can to bring that reality to your enemies."
>>
>>28756558
"I know, but-"

"Are you going to tell them to not speak to anyone on base, lest they become friends who die in a surprise raid? Lock them in their rooms between missions, so they can't possibly form a bond that will some day hurt them? Will you hide letters from home? They could contain unpleasant news, a family member or a lover back home could have gotten hurt, died of sickness, or an accident."

"That's not what I-"

"I'm sure that, just like Minna was, you're a competent, and caring Wing Commander. Rough around the edges, but your heart is absolutely in the right place. Even now, our little conversation is favor to a fellow witch. You simply wanted an answer, to assuage a grieving heart. It hurts you to see someone within your chain of command suffering, you want to stop that from happening to anyone else you know and care for. But you can't stop that from happening. You know that, and it bothers you."

Holly could only move her mouth in response. Her grip on the phone was tight enough that her knuckles had turned white.

"We do not replace the common fighting man or woman, young lady. We do not make them obsolete. We fight alongside them. We help them." Georgette said, suddenly very firm in tone. "And casualties will happen, no matter how a unit is organized. The pain is always, always the same. Do you understand?"

Holly nodded, her teeth clenched and eyes squeezed shut.

"Have you lost anyone from your command?" Georgette asked.

"N-not yet. Some wounded, some being sent home b-but-" Now Holly MacLeod found her voice, some of the righteousness returning, the Commander of an Air Wing and all the authority that came with it in her words. "Not yet, ma'am. And I will do everything in my power to prevent that from happening. I'll do what I can to make things easier for my girls. They're my responsibility, and I have to do everything I can for them. It's my duty, ma'am. And they're like family. I have to try, or I'm not worth the trust they have for me, the training I have been given, or the rank I have earned. If that means keeping my command non-mixed, then that's what I'll do."

"I see. Are you trying to convince me that you know what is best for your witches, or are you trying to convince yourself?"

All that fire she'd found a moment before, smothered.

"I would like to continue this conversation my dear, but there is a dying man I must attend to. I must remind you that that Frank Bishop's condition is incredibly fragile at this time. I cannot promise that he will recover soon, or at all, even with my healing ability. Understand that when he was first put in triage, they immediately put him in the back of the line. He was expected to die."

"Yes, ma'am," Holly almost whimpered.

"Next, and this comes from Admiral Nixon, but also consider this a request from me, dear. You're to not inform his squadron of his current state. I know you must want to relay some news, but I do not think you, or I, would like to be held responsible for promises that could not be kept."

"I understand."

"One last thing, Colonel MacLeod." Holly straightened up in her seat, as though Georgette was actually in the office directly addressing her. "I have the impression that you've let personal fears influence you as a commander. Would you agree?"

"Yes I have!" Holly said defensively. "I don't want to write those kinds of letters home to the families of those who relied on me! I don't want to see my friends go to pieces over the Frank Bishops of the world! It's not wrong!" Holly slumped forward in her chair, forehead head hitting her desk with a dull thump. "It can't be wrong."

"There hasn't been a commander in history who hasn't felt some form of fear, my dear. It's good that you admit that." She sounded like Holly's grandmother, soothing her granddaughter after a nasty spill from a bicycle. "With you, I worry that it's come at the cost of flexibility. For your sake, and the sake of your comrades, I hope that doesn't cost you the lives of those you hold dear. Think on that."

"Yes ma'am..."

"Well, then. Good luck, Ms. MacLeod. To both of us."

The line went dead.
