Erick's inventory and Shards:
http://pastebin.com/MxM1SNLw ))

Your name is Erick Valstein, and you are a Shardkeeper, a rare user of Soul rituals. Accused of treason by a prominent figure in your home village, you defeated and bound a powerful creature—succeeding where he failed—then packed your bags and left for the south, heart filled with scorn.

The vast swamp to the south is poisoned, and wrought with disease; in meditation, you have seen a sinister spirit that you believe is responsible for this, and you have since planned to seek it out, presumably in hopes of lifting the curse from this land. In preparation, you have hunted beasts of the swamp, creating the Mosquito Spirit Charm, which hangs around your neck; in addition, you fought a dangerously close battle with a massive, venomous snake, defeating it and binding it to a great Shard which is tucked away in your knapsack.

You lie in the spare room of Nicholas and Mathilde's domain, in the center of the humble swamp village. Early morning light shines in through the small window in the corner of the room. The building is quiet; you surmise the others haven't woken up yet. You pull yourself to your feet, then wince; limbs sore and body aching, you end up lowering yourself into a sitting position on the floor next to your belongings.

You're going to have to step this up, unless you plan on running yourself into the ground.

What will you do?
>Now's a good time to perform Infusion and Recrystallization; we'll need to be prepared. (Description)

We have the serpent soul for more anti-venom/disease right?

it would be foolhardy to not make use of it immediately, Perhaps we could scrounge around the abandoned village to look for a good fetish for it, something connected to the land already

Lets create a very strong poison immunity charm from the serpent's soul.

Recrystalize our current poison resistance charm.
>>
Seated on the wood floor with your back against the bed, you pull the necklace of teeth over your head. The Soul imprinted upon each one is dim; easy to extract, you imagine, but difficult to make contact with. You close your eyes and focus, gripping the bundled-up string of teeth tightly in one hand. A familiar light pours out from between your knuckles, illuminating the room, and you take hold of the threads of energy with your other hand, spinning them collectively into a group of pale, green beads.

You have recrystallized the Mosquito Soul Shards.

With one hand, you briefly rummage through your pack, producing the large Shard of the Swamp Viper. Bright green, and with few impurities, it glows softly, and you can feel a menacing presence calling out to you from within.

The Mosquito Spirit Charm, however, was more appropriately a collection of individual Shard-infused items, strung together and worn around the neck. Despite the impressive Soul present within the bright green crystal you now hold, it cannot be broken up and split among multiple items. This means you'll have to think of another way to apply its power.

What, then, will you do?
>With the entire necklace now acting as a single object, perform a Shard infusion.
>Your cloak is damaged, but applying the power of Soul may restore it to a new form.

You swing your cloak over one shoulder and into your lap, folding it across your knees; holding the great Shard in both hands, you focus, establishing contact with the Soul within. The objects in the room rattle, the lamp shaking atop the bedside table, as the spectral image of a great viper unfolds from the core of the crystal and spins a wide coil around your body.

With your presence, you take control of the energy and impress it upon your tattered brown cloak. Maintaining your focus, you watch intently as the damage slowly begins to mend. Green light fills in the gaps in the damaged fabric, and a slithering sound like that of the massive swamp viper's body fills your ears as a layer of green scales crawls across the fabric. As the great Shard finishes dissolving between your hands, a single pulse of energy rises from the garment before the color in the room fades.

>Shard Infusion – Venom Spirit Cloak: A cloak, covered with a layer of armor-boosting scales. Affords the user greater resistance to natural toxins, and boosts physical defense.

You glance upward, your focus broken. Nicholas peeks at you from immediately outside the doorway, eyes wide.

What will you do?

While performing an Infusion on someone's clothes out of the blue—especially someone who doesn't appear to understand the nature of your craft—might be a bit awkward, you're sure you can offer the two of them something as a parting gift. You're not sure if you'll return, after all.

“Wow... was that a snake?” The boy asks, appearing to behave cautiously as he peers out from behind the door frame. “What did you do to your shirt, mister?”

“No need to be afraid.” You nod, rising to your feet. “Just my trade. A serpent attacked me in the swamp, and I captured its power.”

You make your way into the other room after gathering your possessions, and the boy follows you. “How'd you do that?”

In the dimly lit common room, Mathilde is seated at the table with another cup of tea. “Ah, I'm glad you're awake! Do what, now? And what was that awful shaking?” She glances over at you as you enter, then cocks an eyebrow, concerned by the new garment you've donned. “Oh, my.”

What will you say?
>>
>>28770376
Hello! I am actually a shardkeeper and I've decided to find a way to rid the swamp from the evil spirit trying to corrupt it.

Do you have any informations about the vile abominations slowly corrupting this place?
>>
>>28770376

>>
>>28770376

>>
>>28770661
Very carefully.

I guess we could need to bait it into manifesting into the mortal world. Maybe there is a shrine dedicated to that spirit somewhere in the swamps.
>>
>>28770460

“What is that you've got on?” Mathilde asks.

“Ah, this? It's the same dusty old cloak. I suppose I should have spoken sooner, though.” You nod, adjusting the heavy garment over your shoulders. It's just as flexible, but the new weight will take a little bit of getting used to. “I'm a bit more than someone trying to ply his trade—I'm what's called a Shardkeeper, a person capable of communing with Spirits and isolating the power of Soul.”

“A Shardkeeper? I'm afraid I've never heard the term myself.” The old woman looks at you with wonder. “But Nicholas and I sensed there was more to you than meets the eye. Why would you really come to a place like this, then?”

“Other than that, my story is true. I'm traveling from a village in the north in search of civilization. While I'm here, though, I plan to solve the issue of this poisoned land.” You sit down next to Mathilde, shooting her a stern glance. “You're correct in your theory. In meditation, I have seen the evil spirit attempting to corrupt this place. Do you know anything else about them?”

“This is quite sudden. No, I'm afraid I don't. True, the Spirits are present in this land, but they scarcely associate with us humans.” The old woman responds. She's right, though; technically, mediating affairs with such entities is part of your job description. “So, when you were attacked by that serpent?”

“You could say I was out hunting.”

“And you truly believe you can save this land?” She asks. “You're just a traveler, are you not? This place should mean so little to you.”

“I'm just doing my job.” You respond. “Whatever's doing this is certainly up to no good, and I'm hoping to stop it before it gets any worse.”

“Mathilde, Nicholas.” You nod at each of the room's inhabitants, turning on a heel and calmly heading for the door. “I'll return in due time to tell you what I've learned.”

“You're truly a good man, Shardkeeper.” She nods. “I wish you luck.”

As you make your way back onto the scaffolding of the swamp village, you feel the vile spirit's gaze upon you again. You've dawdled enough; you close your eyes briefly and feel for the creature's presence, and before long, you're pointed in a certain direction, further south and to the west. With a full day ahead of you, you head in that direction, halberd slung across your back.

You travel unmolested, noticing that the blight mosquitoes and other creatures of the swamp no longer see fit to bother you for some reason. Though these creatures are intimidated by you now, a more intimidating presence exists in this place; the stench of the morass that you stride carefully across grows acrid, beginning to sting your nostrils and the back of your throat again.

Whatever is entrenched in this place doesn't seem to be terribly happy with you.

The sun grows higher overhead, and as you crest a hill flanked by barren trees, you see a green mist rising into the air ahead. Fallen trees and logs bridge gaps and ravines, crossing over pools and crevices of roiling black liquid. Amidst it all, you can see what appears to be a hole in the world—a shadowy pit, with a collapsing dirt path spiraling down into the dark.

An odd feeling—this must be the place.

It is unclear whether spirits emerge from the land or simply inhabit it. As an animal lives in a suitable climate, so does a spirit dwell in the location it is most attuned to; depending on just how powerful the spirit in question is, their presence or magic might have profound effects on the environment as well.

For example, the spirit you encountered in meditation—and presumably, are about to encounter in person—is the one responsible for the poisoning of this vast swamp.

You approach the pit; as you draw closer, it looks more like a jagged laceration in the earth than a natural sinkhole. You take tentative steps onto the dirt path leading down, and move cautiously as it takes you around the outside of the gap and deep into the ground.

Off the bottom of the dirt ramp, there's a short drop, and you make it cautiously. You get the sense that this cavern is some sort of ruin, as portions of cracked, square granite tiles just barely breach the surface of the dirt floor in some places. The cavern is small, and appears caved-in, like a dirt arena that doesn't extend terribly far in any particular direction. Ahead, where the sunlight from above barely touches, a stone bowl sits atop a pedestal, carved of the same worn-out granite.

You don't see anyone else here, but you feel that you aren't alone.

An unearthly quiet falls over this place as you quietly approach the shrine; the sound of your boots against the granite tiles beneath you resonates through the cavernous environment, dirty water trickling down the dirt cave walls. You draw close to the pedestal, but resolve not to lay hands on anything here. Contained within the stone bowl is a swirling vortex of black liquid, like the oily morass of the swamp above.

>>28772206

You aren't alone.

You calm yourself, and cast your presence outward. An image coalesces in your mind, of a spindly finger stirring the poisonous elixir immediately in front of you—you hear a familiar, sinister chuckling, and the air immediately in front of you quivers. A humanoid figure, cast in shadow, takes a single step toward you through the twisting current. You estimate it stands a head or two taller than you. Its body is wiry, and thin, with a pair of elongated, clawed hands. Behind the entity's back, a serpentine tail whips upward, coated in glossy black scales and ending in a savage point like a scorpion's tail.

A smile splits the creature's face, affording an eerie contrast to the rest of its dark form; rather than indicating any physical presence, the inside of its mouth looks more like a wall of bright green light. With one finger, it idly stirs the bowl, eyes fixated on you.

“Interesting. You are the one that sought me out before.” It speaks calmly, leaning forward over its work, and its body seems to extend towards you. “Yet, it should be impossible for a human to make direct contact with spirits—even now, you are not alone, for you walk with the Souls of beasts. “I am surprised you don't know of humans sensitive to the spirit world.” You respond, remaining vigilant. At a moment's notice, you're able to retrieve your halberd and strike. “I'm a Shardkeeper, and I have come to cleanse this land. Will you give yourself up peacefully, then, or will we be forced to battle?”

“Yes... of course. It's been so little time, yet I've already forgotten.” The creature rises to its full height, appearing bothered by the statement. It steps out from behind the pedestal, and you turn to face it, taking a step back as it strides past you toward the other end of the cavernous arena. “It was foolish of me, to think your kind truly eradicated from this world.”

Closer to the opposite wall, and in the path of your escape, the creature turns to face you, swiping its tail back and forth. The creature's tone, and the way it carries itself, seems to have changed; it sounds wiser, and appears more alert. “And you are no less selfish than the others, I see—for I take it you see fit to mediate in natural affairs that do not concern you. I'm afraid if what you say of your intentions are true, you're much too late, Shardkeeper. Besides, I've only just gotten settled in...”

“Mm... Do you not see it, still?” As he walks beside the cavern's dirt wall, he drags a spindly finger across it. The dirt grows black, and bubbles of thick liquid breach its surface, spraying oily droplets into the air. Bits of dirt then spill from the wall, wrought with decay. “This place is meant to be my home, of course. Through my own methods, I've simply made it a bit more suitable for myself.”

“You have completely destroyed this land, spirit. How can your corruption be reversed?”

“Now, the creatures wither, but in time, they will adapt, and new life will emerge from my venom.” The entity brandishes its claws, striding slowly towards you. “The humans you speak of, though? I detest them, and their greed—you, who uses the power of Soul for your own devices should know this. Elsewhere, they are too deeply seated in the land for my influence to overcome them. “No, spirit.” You assume a fighting stance, halberd pointed at the approaching entity. “You will leave this place.”

The air ahead of you quivers, and a bitter scent fills your throat. The venom spirit vanishes from sight; you focus, relying on your ability to sense spirits as it lurches towards you in the form of a hissing black cloud. It takes form within a step or two of you, and lashes out, swinging wildly with poison-tipped claws as sharp as razor blades. You step backwards, parrying blows when possible, and carefully maneuvering your upper body to avoid other attacks. Each swing leaves a noxious trail through the air, and you hear droplets of some venomous liquid splattering against the scales of your cloak.

The opportunity arises, and you thrust the end of the Earthbreaker forward; a screech assaults your ears as you feel your weapon hit something solid in the acidic cloud. The walls of the cavern shake, and green-flecked oil surges from the cracks, burning away at the granite floor where it lands.

You break contact with the entity, wrenching your weapon from deep within its form; from out of the corner of your eye, you see movement, rolling out of the way in time for a scorpion's tail to sweep through the space your head occupied just a moment ago. It buries itself into the ground, sending chunks of dirt and granite skyward, but restores itself to attacking height in an instant and stabs towards you again. Scaled cloak fluttering, you leap backwards, guiding the appendage to the ground with the Earthbreaker.

As you spin through the air, the shrine behind you catches your eye. You land, skidding on one knee to avoid a spray of miry liquid passing overhead, then spin as you rise to your feet, turning to face the shrine. You charge towards it, then strike the ground with the Earthbreaker, sending a fissure through the cavern that stops at the edge of the pedestal—at once, the ground beneath the structure explodes, destroying it and shattering the stone bowl. Its contents spray out in a putrid dome, landing in a circle around the crater.

“What have you done? You...” The entity's voice sounds from over your shoulder, and the ground begins to tremble; bits of earth begin to rain from the cavern overhead, and a distant sound like screaming or howling eclipses the noise of the environment. You turn, and the spirit's dark claw is upon you; before you can maneuver aside, it strikes your neck, carrying you with it as it extends across the collapsing cavern and presses you against the wall. “This land belongs to me alone, and I'll not have the affairs of humans—nor the feelings of some Shardkeeper—sabotaging my work!”

A touch of green bleeds into the red threads of spiritual power that surround you, spreading throughout until it infests them completely.

They swirl about, forming ethereal tendrils, and you gasp as they simultaneously pierce your body from multiple angles; though they don't seem to damage your flesh or even your cloak, it feels like they've taken something with them as they pass through to the other side. “I will be bound by no Shardkeeper—instead, I'll take you as my minion!”

You can see flickers, both of this aphotic place where Spirits walk, and of the real world—images of a cavern crumbling around you, burying you beneath strata of infected earth. You maintain hold of whatever core you've taken in your grip, but the creature's body extends, slowly spreading up your arm toward the shoulder.

You're losing ground.

What will you do?

Cause fuck you that's why.

And what would that have done here? I'm not saying that making the charms for them isn't a good idea with the venom spirit living in the swamp, but those charms wouldn't have helped anything in combat against this thing.

Captcha: then msktio

We need to use the mosquitoes to abate his hold momentarily and back out of the spirit world to beat his ass a bit more?

Or if these rolls are good, burn through and bind bind.

I was in favor of checking out the Swamp Giants that've been tending the swamp. Investigating them seemed like the next logical step before we, a low-tier shardkeeper, took on a spirit that's poisoning an entire swamp.
>>
Earthbreaker in your opposite hand, you pull away, but without letting go of the nascent Shard in your hand; you can't give up so easily, after all. The oil creeps further up your arm, carrying the sensation of needles on your skin with it. You grit your teeth, cloak growing more lucent, body beginning to shake.

“You're the one who's underestimating me, spirit!” A one-handed halberd thrust carves away another chunk of the creature's body. Tendrils split from the wound, with scythe-like tips that spill poison, adding to the pool forming at your feet. They lash out, biting into your armored cloak—you have little room to dodge, and they maneuver about to favor such targets as your exposed neck and head.

Another strike, summoning up the power of Earth; the touch of Earthbreaker sends a tremor through the vile spirit's body, and it briefly disperses like a cloud. Within, you can see a jet-black shard in your palm; rope-like tendrils extend from the inside of the ashen cloud, wrapping tightly around your arm.

“Are you a fool?” The creature's body re-condenses around you, and it elongates its body, coming face to face with you. “You walk with protection, Shardkeeper, but enough venom will kill you regardless.”

What will you do?

Maybe a feint, offering it our body. Play off of its poison comment and say something along the lines of "Hahah, but I won't die if I BECOME poison!" *cue shuttling/accepting its essence into us...then seizing it when he leasts expects it.*
>>
>>28774904

Hopping on it in a moment of distraction as it doesn't know what to make of our sudden lack of resistance. I like it. We'll see if SoulQM was too busy writing to notice it though.
>>
“Yeah?” You grin. “Guess I'll just have to take you with me!”

The ethereal spears flicker, and the infection subsides; the green color fades back to red, and they withdraw from your body. You call out, gathering spiritual power; the spirit cries out, and energy pours from its body, swirling around you and doubling back to the growing crystal in your hand.

“Impossible! I...” The entity gurgles.

“Never again will your presence torment this land, Spirit! Henceforth, you are mine to command!”

The black oil shrinks away from your arm, crawling back up your wrist and to your fingertips; the creature's last howl fades to nothing, leaving an onyx bipyramidal crystal in your hand.

You fall to one knee, the ruins crumbling around you. You can feel the environment changing; the very swamp is in upset, and you need to move while you've still got a path to take.

You charge forward, body suddenly seizing, and stumble—one foot sinks into a morass, and is caught, sending you stumbling forward. You hit the ground and roll, watching the path you followed into this sinkhole begin to collapse above you.

A pillar of earth breaks away from the facade to one side, coming down on the back of your knee with a great weight; fire shoots up your leg, and your entire body flinches, prone in the dirt.

“Seems your luck has run out, Shardkeeper.” The spirit's voice continues, speaking directly to your mind. “The Soul that walks with you can only abate my venom for so long.”

>12

You pull yourself to your feet and stumble forward, attempting to find a foothold on the dirt face ahead. You scale a short distance upward, to whatever's left of the path; chunks of earth crumble and fall ahead of you. You pick up the pace, and as you breach the surface, a cloud of blight mosquitoes sweeps past, one of which collides directly with you and begins buzzing about wildly. With both hands, you grab its torso and throw it to the ground at your side.

A harsh wind blows through the swamp; the ground shakes, and tree limbs sway and bend, appearing close to sucumbing to shear forces.

What will you do?

(( Erick can't even get a break in a flashback/dream. ))

“So you'd rather fall with me, never to be found again?” As you make your way back into the swamp, you procure another one of the antidote tablets and swallow it, heading back to the path. “Like it or not, we're partners now, so either help me or shut it.”

“Attribute your capturing me to the fact that I am nowhere near as powerful as I once was, Shardkeeper. Though this holds true, do not mistake the power of my Soul for that of some animal. Were this vessel to be lost somewhere, I am still capable of taking shelter in the spirit realm.” The spirit scoffs. “In addition, the terms of our partnership have not yet been negotiated.”

As you crest a hill, you pause, glancing out in search of one of the bog beasts of the swamp—there isn't one in sight, and you're not particularly sure how you'd go about finding or luring one out. You stumble, feeling your body begin to seize again, and once again, the scales of your cloak flash briefly.

Whatever you do, it might be best to do it expediently.

(( Archiving and going the fuck to sleep; sorry about the abrupt exit, and we'll be right back into the action next time. Happy to be running again, but I'm exhausted. ))

That doesn't mean we can't work together, besides whose to say you can't chill with me and recover then you can go back to doing whatever afterwards. Who knows though, I have a habit of bringing the best outta those I work with"
