Working on deciding as to how many threads we've got left in the series, here. I figure one or two, counting this thread, but We'll have to see- I guess it really depends on what happens tonight.

notes for next season of '89 are going along smoothly, which is good news. I suppose you guys are anxious to get back to Frank and get some questions answered, huh? haha.

anyway, enough of that. archives here: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Strike%20witches%201989 down along the bottom, along with Merc's PJ witches and the more recent TW89 installments. and no, IDK when we'll see the next TW89, haha. Maus and I don't talk as much as people think we do.

Anyway, enough of that, let's get on with this!

++

“What I'd give for a small ceremony. Can't we move this to Wyoming or something?” You grouse, checking yourself for the thirtieth time in the mirror. Your dress uniform- she'd insisted you wear it- is, as usual, immaculate, ribbons all in their correct locations, buttons shined to a mirror like finish. Even your critical eye can find no flaw, and you rub a hand back over your close-cropped hair, noting that there's a hell of a lot more gray than you remember, especially around your temples.

Quentin- your best man- snorts. “Well, maybe if you'd mentioned that to dad before he got interested....”

You can't help but laugh, even though it doesn't really help. “I guess, kinda late on that one, huh?”

Quentin looks over at you. “Hell, John, I think it was too late when you proposed to her. Didn't you see the gleam in his eye? You've been around him damn near thirty years, you ougghta know this by now.”

“Probably should have suspected something when he invited us to have it here in new york, huh?” You ask, checking yourself in the mirror again.

“Will you stop that? Your uniform is fine, Lieutenant Colonel.” Quentin snickers, putting particular emphasis on your rank. “And yes. But like you said, too late now.”

>>
He shrugs. “Honestly, I don't even think you could run. I get the impression Ilyena would hunt you down and drag you back here.”

You chuckle. “Assuming it wasn't her idea.”

Quentin chuckles, then looks at his watch- He's handling it better, not being the one getting married, and all, but he's impatient, too.

“So she's said she's not going to fly anymore?” He asks after a short silence.

You shake your head. “Nah, she wants out of it. I can't say I blame her, either. France was nerve wracking and Poland...” You shrug. “Poland wasn't as bad, but still. Those last few months, running tactical missions with the ninth and the Luftwaffe....” You trail off with another shrug.

Quentin nods. “Yeah, tell me about it.”

“Not quite as nerve wracking as this, though.” You say, venturing a small smile. “Good lord, it's like your dad invited half of new york city.”

“And a few other foreign dignitaries he's met, to boot.” Quentin says, matter-of-factually. “But C'mon John, you're marrying a witch. You knew they have big weddings.”

“It's not like there's not that many of them,” you complain. “And still, there's big, then there's... this! Hell I don't even recognize most of the people out there.”

“Neither do I.” Quentin says with a shrug. “But I didn't at my wedding either.”

He grins. “Just remember, could be worse. We could be over Chamery and there could be fourteen of them this time.”

You shake your head at that.

“So, you given any thought to what you're going to do?” He asks. “God knows we're going to need you, especially if they pick up the contract for the bats like they'd planned, but I don't think anyone would argue the point that you've earned the right to retire.”

[] “I was thinking of staying in a few more years. I'm just not ready to give up flying yet.”

[x] “I think I'm going to get out, move somewhere quiet, just enjoy life, ya know?”

You step in front of the mirror again, adjusting your ribbons slightly- they seemed crooked.

“I've been thinking of getting out, Quint.” You say, adjusting them the other direction- maybe they were fine? “Move somewhere quiet, maybe out west. Live a quiet life, ya know?”

Quentin nods. “To tell you god's honest truth, John, we kinda figured you'd say that. Two wars is enough for any man.” He pauses. “Well, except maybe dad.”

You laugh. “Your dad just likes adventure. Speaking of, how did his trip to the navy yard go?”

Quentin shrugs. “Well, he approves of the California, that's for sure. I think her skipper and his wife got invited, so they're probably out there. Guess he toured a couple of destroyers too.”

He looks at his watch. “Well, it's about time buddy. You ready for this? And get out of the damn mirror, you look fine.”

You nod, even though it's a lie.

Most of the actual ceremony passes in a blur- you distinctly remember Camille acting as Ilyena's maid of honor, and the twins and their parents out in the audience- their folks flown out specifically on your and Ilyena's invitation- not to mention Quentin's significant pull in the Army air force. You wonder, passingly, what their friends thought when a B-24 landed at the small-town airport to pick them up and bring them to New York city.

1/2
>>
You also remember your bride being walked up the isle by Theodore Roosevelt- you almost wonder how that works, then decided you honestly didn't care. You're kind of surprised, though you suppose you really shouldn't be, at the number of people out there- your practiced eye spots, with relative ease, several army air force uniforms, a couple pairs of navy whites, even a marine or two. You're pretty sure you see a soviet uniform there in the back- you wonder how they got in, Ilyena's stance on the Soviet union isn't exactly a massive secret. A few RAF uniforms- that makes sense, you made a few friends at Wattisham, and a few Luftwaffe ones, too- probably some of the guys you met at Templehof.

The Military men and women are scattered among several others, civilians, mostly, you think- probably here due in no small part to Teddy's word. You almost feel bad for the twin's folks- they almost look out of place, their sunday best at drastic contrast with the tailored suits and dresses of some of the people out there.

The reception is hardly more calm- but it's also less nerve wracking. The hard part is over- She's not Ilyena Nicolvena anymore, she took your name, making her Ilyena Kazanski. It kinda has a certain ring to it, you gotta admit. You kinda wish your folks were still alive to see it- though you're pretty sure they'd be happy. They were always tough, but supportive, urging you to excel at whatever you set your hands to. You like to think in this case, you did them proud.

2/3 (oops)
>>
You've got a bit of time to move about the reception- Ilyena has detached herself from you to go talk with Camille- and you've spotted Quentin off with a cluster of your brother officers, including a few with stars on their shoulders. Of course, their conversation seems friendly enough from here, and now's as good a time as any to talk to them- you're sure they'll ask you about planning to retire, afterall.

There's also the twins and their folks- the twins don't look out of place at all, honestly, happily talking with everyone and everything, but their parents seem kinda overwhelmed by it all. You imagine at least talking with them some would help out a bit, and Ilyena did want to meet them when she got the chance.

[] Let's go talk to that minor galaxy over there. Might as well break the news unofficially.

[x] Not gonna let the twin's folks sit there like that, let's get them introduced!

You know, you have to give the twins' folks a lot of credit- they're very strong. First they had two daughters whisked off to war- witches, sure, but witches died too- and now they've been brought to something that's far, far beyond their social norm because of those same two daughters. Yeah, they're lost, but at the same time, they could hardly expect to be doing better.

You make your way over to them, nodding at the twins. “Hiya, springtime!” You greet. “How're you two doing today?”

April and May both give you quick hugs, looking around. “Where's miss Ilyena?” April asks. “We saw Cammie earlier and said hi, but she didn't stick around to talk.”

May looks at you, knowingly. “She was chasing a pilot.”

You laugh, nodding. She's been kind of predatory since the end of the war, and part of you- a small part- can't help but wonder if maybe she's a little jealous of you and Ilyena.

“Oh!” May says, half-turning. “I'm really sorry, I almost forgot. Major-” She gets your rank wrong, but you don't correct her, still getting used to it yourself- “These are our parents, David and Madeline Smith. Dad, Mom, this is Major John Kazanski, he was our squadron's pilot in Europe.”

You shake David's hand, smiling. “Pleasure to meet both of you. How was the flight?”

David smiles. “Ah, truth be told, sir, it was our first time on an airplane. It was something else.”

You laugh. “Isn't it? And call me John, please.” You make him to be about ten or so years younger than you, maybe a hair less- he's in his late thirties, tops.

He nods. “I can see why the girls love to fly so much, there's nothing quite like it. When we found out they were witches, Maddie and me, well, we didn't quite know what to think. Really, we weren't worried until... “

He trails off- you remember the twins saying they'd lived in Kansas, and had spent the better part of '42 in a refugee camp down in Texas. December seventh must have come as a very nasty shock to them- as it did to a lot of people.

You nod. “The two of them are both very good- when Ilyena comes around, I'm sure she'll be able to tell you more about it. It's different for witches, and-”

You're cut off by Quentin and his father- you can see David and Madeline practically shrink back when they recognize them.

“John! We were looking all over for ya!” Quint says, handing you a glass of wine. “Springtime! How are my littlest witches doing?”

April and May look at each other, than back at Quint with a grin.

“Quint!” They say in unison. “We're good! And have you met our parents?”

“I can't say I've had the honor, no. You introduce yours, I'll introduce mine?” He says, laughing.

It doesn't take long for Quentin and Teddy's gregarious manner to get the twin's parents feeling more at home- though you rather imagine it was helped by Teddy telling David he looks like he'd have been right at home going up San Juan hill. Apparently, Teddy's a bit of a childhood hero for the man, and you imagine this is a bit of a dream come true for him.

Is it SWQ or Touhou or something else? I've never really managed to understand the whole Touhou mythos...
>>
You're about to excuse yourself to go find your wife when she finds you- announcing herself by wrapping her arms around your waist. “I cannot believe so many people turned out for our wedding, darling!” She says, excited. “Ah, it is as I always dreamed of.”

She wraps her hand in yours- you passingly wonder how she managed to learn how to do that so damn fast, you haven't even been married a day- and steps forward, re-engaging you two in the conversation with the twin's parents.

Madeline- who prefers to be called Maddie- clicks with Ilyena almost instantly- the two of them chatting away like lifelong friends in just a few minutes. You're glad for that, joining Quentin and Teddy in talking with David.

By the end of the reception, you've gotten their mailing address- temporary, but they'll be at their new home before the year's out, they think. When they finally get ready to leave, the twins give you one last hug, their parents noting that they've been invited to stay in the city as guests of Quentin's family for a while. Quentin, meanwhile, is overseeing the packing up of your wedding gifts, practically shooing you out the door for your honeymoon, which, he's said in the past, is long, long overdue, and no, Templehof and Wattisham don't count.

But that just leaves where you want to go- Ilyena has left that decision to you, and you've kind of decided to keep it in the states, but you've got a bunch of places you'd like to go, and you're having trouble picking.

[] California! You've heard amazing things about the beaches and parks there.
[] The pacific northwest! You've got a line on a cabin up there that sits on an incredible chunk of property.
[] The west! There's family property in Wyoming, near yellowstone!
[] Here, in New York- you'll be close to friends and be able to show Ilyena your favorite things about the city.
[] Somewhere else! (Write in destination in the US)

Touhou is essntially a curtain shooter series that takes place in this magical land cordoned off from teh outside world by a magic barrier filled with various mythological creatures. Mostly Japanese with a sprinking of Western stuff here and there.

I know that much, but even being mostly originally from /a/ I can't really tell my Reimus from my Cirnos from my whoever elses. I know what the games are, but the amount of background (fanon?) that comes with a bunch of bullet hell shooters about magical girls in Gensokyo baffles me.

Roanoke, VA. a rail road boom town due to the coal fields near by in that age. new money moving in, jobs everywhere, city growing, awesome view, a new air port being built if you still want to fly.

the other one is Detroit, MI.
The motor city in it's hay day. enough said.

Or, alternately,

>[X] Other! Visit the last remaining tallgrass prairie in the United States, if the Martians didn't fuck it all up, the cheap rotten lousy bastards.

Specifically, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tallgrass_Prairie_Preserve

What Wikipedia doesn't say is that it was maintained as prairie by the folks that owned it before it was bought and and turned into the preserve, because they believed it provided better feed for their cattle.

Today, it maintains a herd of about 2,500 bison. They cull the number back to 2,000 every November, because that's the most the prairie can sustain over the winter. The culled bison are either turned into meat, for bison burgers and such, or sold to people that want to raise their own bison. It's really interesting!

[x] California! You've heard amazing things about the beaches and parks there.

You think about it some, considering quite a few places around the country- living like you did, as long as you did, you're pretty independently wealthy, enough so that you certainly won't have to work much for the rest of your life. Flight pay adds up, especially over the better part of three decades.

Finally, you let go of Ilyena, heading to a phone booth to make a call to a friend of yours. A few minutes later, you step back in the car, telling the driver to head for the train station. Ilyena looks up at you, but doesn't say anything when you smile, electing instead to rest her head on your shoulder.

From the station, you board a westbound Amtrak. Inside, you're shown to your rooms- you pulled a sleeper berth, which, while small, suits you just fine, far better than the res of the passenger cars. The train pulls out of the station shortly after you've got your bags stowed- You haven't even had time to change, though Ilyena has, swapping her wedding dress for a far more serviceable, and far less ornate, dress.

The train chugs through the northeast, taking you out of New York and Pennsylvania, then through Ohio and Illinois. A stopover in Iowa gives you a short chance to get off the train, though you're hardly taken with the endless fields of corn. Boring place, looks like.

1 of like, three. i dunno, man. could be four, maybe.
>>
>>28790500
any write ups today hornet?

Like any ideas of what the witches were doing when Frank was in his coma?
>>
From Iowa, the train continues west, through Nebraska, along rails just a few years old- as you roll through the midwest, especially this part of it, your practiced eye makes out the scars of large-scale combat- burnt out tank hulks mixed with the wreckage of martian war machines in their hundreds. The great plains hosted the biggest armored battle on earth, so far- thousands of tanks clashing with their martian counterparts. Around the towns and cities, most of the cleanup is done, but out on the plains, you still spot the occasional lonely Sherman wreck or shattered tripod walker. One of the bigger attractions turns out to be a hulked martian dreadnaught- a vast machine corpse, surrounded by the detritus of the battle that brought it down.

Out through Colorado and into Utah and Nevada, the plains giving way to the mountains and desert. There's less to see here- while the mountains have a few breathtaking sights, the desert is flat, drab, and relatively boring.

You roll into California a few days later, relishing the chance to stop. Your friend- he couldn't be there in person, shipping out as he was with the better part of his company to help the Japanese reconstruction efforts, left you an enveloped package at the train station- after confirming your identity, the man behind the ticket counter hands it over.

Inside are two sets of keys, a note, and another envelope. The note reads “John- glad to hear you made it through ok, I'll stop by and visit sometime. The envelope has my wedding gift in it- give your wife a kiss for me. - Mick”

The envelope is the deed to the mountain cabin- along with another note. “Never get to use the place anymore and the wife hates it. I figure we're square now.”

I want a Merlin POV writeup of her snuggling with Frank when he got back

It'd make me d'awwww
>>
You hand the note to Ilyena. She reads it quickly, then flips it over, finding nothing written on the back. “John what-”

You chuckle. “Mick and I met back in 1919, early part of the year. He was stuck in new york and found out his wife and kid were sick with the flu here in cali.” You shake your head. “He was enlisted, with the squadron, one of our ground crew. Quint and I called in some favors and got him his discharge, but he couldn't get transport, everything was jammed.”

You grin. “So we stole a two seater, filed a bogus flight plan, and flew him cross country to be with his family. Almost caught a court martial over it, but they couldn't find any proof that we'd done anything wrong. We just made a bunch of mistakes.” you shrug. “oops”

She laughs. “Was his family alright?”

You shake your head. “His wife made it through, but they lost their son.”

“That's awful!” Ilyena says.

You nod. “Yeah. Same way my folks died, actually. Only child, they left everything in my name, so we've got some land out in Wyoming, too.”

She smiles. “I should like to see Wyoming. But I believe we have a cabin that is much closer?”

You nod.

It takes a few tries to get a vehicle, eventually, you manage to scare up a 1941 Ford pickup, one of the last few to roll off the line before the war. It starts up ok, though it runs somewhat rougher than you'd like.

The drive out to the cabin is quiet, but that hardly matters- it's relatively short, honestly. You crunch into the gravel drive, you note that Mick must have just had the place cleaned for you. You pull both your bags and Ilyena's out of the bed of the truck, noting somewhat wryly that She's already in the house- no carrying the bride over the threshold for you! You chuckle at the thought.

Inside, the place is spotless- freshly cleaned, had to have been. Another note, on the kitchen table, confirms it- along with pointing out the fridge is freshly stocked, there's a larger freezer in the basement that's also full, and that the folks that run the market in town know to expect you- and the local law does as well. The view out the back is, as promised, amazing- Mick is an avid outdoorsman, and owns more than one cabin, and all of them have views like this. The back porch sits near a drop off, with a narrow path leading a few hundred feet down to a clear lake in the valley, fed probably from the tops of the nearby mountains.

You're admiring the view enough that you don't notice your wife walking up behind you before she wraps her arms around you, standing up on her toes to whisper in your ear “Darling, this bed is far too large for just me. Maybe you would help fill it?”

Damn, she's good, you think.

And that's it for this week, gents!

Just one more, I think, this series.

Hopefully you guys have enjoyed working with John and Ilyena as much as I have- it's kinda fun, to be honest. John's kinda ordinary, really, compared to Young or, in his time, Frank. plus, I do think there's not enough that covers the post war... not that this will change that much. But! it does leave the door open to come back and explore the post-martian '50s some, I think.

anyway, as always, guys, I hope you enjoyed the run and we'll be back next week! Till then fellas, cheers!

Fronk occasionally has a bit of a hero complex about him, but he's not really a dumbass. IMO, he's doing pretty damn well around a bunch of sexy magical pantsless ladies who have something akin to the hots for him. In some fashion, Young's actions kinda sorta make sense as well (occasionally)

>>
>>28791166
Because he's stuck in a situation for which there is literally no analogue in his world. He's
>fighting MARTIANS
>in the immediate company of sparklies (who he and the other pilots in the beginning were established to dislike/distrust)
>has to live with said all female, mostly pantsless women (some as young as 12)
>found out he's magical (in a world where magic was supposed to be entirely female and the basis of increased female power throughout history)
>20ish year old fighter pilot in wartime

Maybe not as much the later threads, but a lot of his earlier reactions made a whole lot of sense to me as someone who's confused, paranoid, horny, and young in wartime, etc.
>>
>>28791196
I wonder if it happened where are the protesters as I know there's a few people wary of repeats of 'nam like there are now in our timeline (didn't stop GW from sicing the army on Iraq though)

That and I feel the fact it still happens sort of runs counter to SWQ's "want of a nail" generally improving things.

>>
>>28791196
>I'm still a tad bit confused over the specifics myself
of the fire? improperly stored rockets mixed with bad maintenance meant ones rocket motor chemically degraded to the point of being unstable and set it off, into a pile of more ordinance, first responders got there right as the fire kicked off a pile of 250 and 500 lb bombs, wiped them out, more responders had to deal with not only the fire, which was getting stupidly out of control, but also exploding bombs and rockets as well as fuel and fumes igniting from the compartments alongside the initial fire site.
>>
>>28791184
>>28791242
I also think Merc wanted to stem the tide of fuckery that happened in VMQ 1 and especially 2. In 1, Jager was almost invincible (be it good rolls or plot armor), and in 2 Falynn got the crap kicked out of her but still won. I think that he just wanted to remind us that we could and did fuck up by trying to CQC a tankwitch
>>
>>28791371
A lot of their ordnance was also like...WW2 leftovers IIRC. Hadn't been stored well, so when that rocket went off, all of that older stuff cooked off as well
>>
>>28791350
Hopefully remaining conscious after the heroics.
>>
>>28791371
More of the specifics in the world history. The fire itself is pretty well documented (and some scary shit to read about, good lawd)

>>28791302
I'll think about this some.
>>
>>28791398
I get the feeling people will never learn from their mistakes unless we keep on reminding them.

That and plot armor is something easily said of Frank and Young as there were generally rewards or simply hardly fall out from a mistake in those stories.
>>
>>28791371
Also, the second wave of responders weren't very well trained. Half of them properly used fire foam since the explosion also set off reserves of jet fuel, while the other half used water, which just washed the foam away and spread the oil fires even further.
>>
>>28791453
>as there were generally rewards or simply hardly fall out from a mistake in those stories
In Ghost's defense, we've apparently dodged the deaths of quite a few of our witches. He deleted the post immediately though...
>>28791471
In universe, weren't a lot of that second wave witch boytoys?
>>
>>28791398

>>
>>28791199
>Personally, I think he's a better feelz writer than me.

Well, now I'm all bashful and shit over here
>>
>>28791501
he's probably doing it in the background so we can't nat 20 ninja kick a tankwitch then save her life. I liked Merc's rolling system because it gave us quite a few opportunities for awesome (Jager Sturmfuhrer, KNIGHT PUNCHER) but in a grittier setting it'd be a bit out of place.
>>
>>28791497
There is also THAT incident which I won't name, but whatever the case SW89 seems more to encourage than discourage such thinking.
>>
>>28791507

>>28791497
Yeah, hence the witches not the Sherktwanz being antsy about Frank's cousin Joe being on the carrier. What happens if it gets hit? He's in a damage control party. What happens if he's assigned to one that's near ammo/jet fuel? What happens when or if it cooks off?

Dead Joe, pissed Frank, fucked up Shark twins.
>>
>>28791572
Though the twins are the oldest of the witches in the wing, right?
>>
>>28791634
I thought Tabitha and Rachel were older, if not by much, but could be wrong.
>>
>>28791634

I think so. If it's not them, it's either Ice or Katya.
>>
>>28791634
possibly, though I'm surprised by the trend of still yanking girls from schools to be witches in relative peacetime pre-WWIII as opposed to letting them actually get an education/etc.
>>
>>28791634
This is a good question, if only because I can never really keep people's ages straight. Ghost, you got an age chart or something?
>>
>>28791677
Well, in theory the younger girls such as Merlin and Goose could be the result of the tail end of the big military buildup in the '80s, assuming that happened in the SWQ-verse
>>
>>28791719
I can't imagine that going by without protest, particularly from the witches' parents. I mean it's basically dragging them away from an education so they can potentially risk experiencing things that mess up grown men.
>>
>>28791795
Well the academy is an education in itself, and I assume that the girls have the option of continuing education while active. Military School, in the most literal sense possible.
>>
>>28791817
doesn't that mainly cover how to be witch/shooting things? What about things like math, etc. You know vital life skills.
>>
>>28791847
The naval academy gives a full education (math and science heavy, but still) at college level. I'd assume it works at lower levels too
>>
>>28791847
Well, I'm pretty sure they still have to get an education on things, and given how many witches we've met in the military have some life skills well in hand (there are always exceptions) I figure the curriculum to be fairly encompassing.
>>
>>28791847
>>28791880

There's probably differing levels of the Academy education for the various witches.

Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary all being provided, probably funded by whatever the witches do to acquire funding, and subsidized by the federal or state governments. I can see states competing to have an Academy that offers the best education being a thing, actually.

Primary and Secondary educations at the Academies would be provided for orphans or parents of witches who'd rather see them with an Academy education than a public school one.
>>
>>28791497
>In universe, weren't a lot of that second wave witch boytoys?

Not the second, the first wave. They had maybe 3 seconds to realize what was about to happen before the bombs exploded.

Mav - 17
Goose - 15
Merlin - 15
Katya - "somewhere in her 20's"
Rosalie - Doesn't say but if she was conceived during the Algerian War I'd say she's the oldest, mid-to late 20's, maybe 30 even.
Shark Twins - Doesn't say but I'd say 19-23 maybe.
Konstantina - I'd say between Slider's age and Katya's age.
