Bass Treble Character Sheet and Inventory: http://pastebin.com/s36n0pwd

You open your eyes and almost immediately regretting doing so as they sting at the mere movement of your eyelids. Leaning up in bed, you wince in pain and look down at your torso, finding it gauzed up and most likely cut, burned, and bruised underneath. Confused at your battered condition you look around your room and realize, you aren’t in your room. Then it all comes flooding back to you…

Your name is Bass Treble and yesterday you started your career as a Digger by illegally breaking into a ruin on your home island to get boat money, getting captured and tortured by pirates, and then escaping in a fighter and nearly drowning in the sea. You also fought a drill armed robot, teamed up with other illegal diggers, had a small ship crash down on top of you, and probably started some vendetta with Red the daughter of the leader of the Red Skulls, oh and you’ve learned to laugh in the face of death which may or may not be the result of electricity induced brain damage. All in all, not really a great start by most standards, but you’re alive and it was exciting, so at least it’ll make for a great story when you’re older, if you don’t die horrible before get a chance to get older.

At the moment you’re on Schlaf Island and if you remember correctly the Police Chief said he’d talk to the Mayor about getting you a Digger’s License seeing how you warned them about the location of the Red Skulls flagship. However if the clock on the wall is right, it’s only 7:30 and you’re hungry, shirtless, bandaged up with two black eyes, and have a bag with a lot of sensitive gear that took a dip into the sea with you.

Since you haven’t eaten in about a day or so, you decide to focus on that first since your stomach growls, as if refusing compromise. You look around the room you’re in and find that’s its small, pretty bare bones, but has an antiquated feel that makes it very relaxing. There’s a small bathroom with a tub, a toilet, and a sink. The bedroom has a bed, a dresser, a nightstand, and a chair in the corner with an antique clock hanging up on the wall. On the nightstand you notice a there’s a little brochure which you pick up and flip through.

Apparently you’re in the Sleeper Inn, a sea side inn near the beach and just outside of the walls of Schlaf City. It’s an old Inn, but seems to be well respected (at least that’s what the brochure says) and it’s renowned for its comfortable rooms and great food. Looking at the menu on the back your eyes widen at the prices. For prices this steep the food better be good.

You immediately weigh your options.

You have plenty of money, but equipment, weapons, and Other Digger stuff costs a lot, so money you spend on things like food could potentially jip you out of getting something you need or will need. However if you don’t get something to eat then you’ll become sick and won’t be able to do anything, plus the quality if food you eat will also affect your health. If there’s anything working at Mr. Beermat’s Pub taught you anything, it’s that man was not meant to sustain himself off of beernuts and greasy food.

>[A] 50 Ƶ ~35 Ƶ. Spend the money on the Inn’s food. You survived torture and escape from a pirate ship, you deserve some good food.

>[B] 25 Ƶ~15 Ƶ. Be thrifty about this, you can get some food in town, and maybe they have one of those convenience stores you’re heard about in town where you can get some cheap food.\

>[C] 5 Ƶ ~0 Ƶ. Be cheap about this. Buy a candy bar or kick a vending machine, maybe you can get a free meal if you use your head or a little force.

>B, oppulence in luxury is for those too weak to take proper care of themselves. We will be the strongest digger, so we should also shop and eat smart and with thrift. Also, not getting caught up by price gouging. Maybe another day, once we are more established. Gotta take care of ourselves for now.

Ask around the inn. We need some medical assistance, and fast. After that, we'll call dad and fill him in on what happened.

Proper nutrition is important but we aren't rich.

We patched ourselves up on that ship, remember? It's amateur work, and we can't risk getting worse knowing that the Red Skulls are probably on their way here.

This is a small island, kids crashing in stolen pirate planes isn't something that happens every day.

Either way, we should get ourselves checked, then go shopping for some armor.
Maybe check out our buster rifle as well.

You patched yourself up on the ship, but considering you took a dip into the sea the police chief thought it best to take you to the hospital. The gauze you have are fresh and the docs applied plenty of good stuff to your wounds. You're feeling better now, you just have to let the stuff heal. Though the doctor did say to check back in if you were feeling ill.

You decide to be thrifty about this. You can get food a lot cheaper outside of the hotel. Shouldering your bag, you exit your room and make your way downstairs.

Arriving in the lobby you're greeted by a kindly looking old women behind the registration counter.

"Hello Deary, I'm Mrs. Sleeper the owner of this Inn. Did you enjoy your sleep?" The women asks.

"Yes I did. Nice place you have here. Listen, do you know any place I could get a cheap bite to eat around here?" you wince as you blink again, having black eyes isn't fun.

"There's Marie's Diner, but I think you'll find the Pizza/Tofu place across from St. Patty's hospital is a better bargain." The women takes out a small map, and marks the location of the pizza on it.

"You can keep the map, I keep them around for guests and tourists." The old women states.

"You don't mind people not buying food here?" You ask, taking the map and looking it over.

"Our food is expensive, it's more luxury food then something you'd have for dinner on a regular basis." Mrs. Sleeper explains. "Also, don't worry about the no-shirt, no shoes policy, the owner tends to go shirtless and shoe-less himself"

You decide not to ask why and leave with a friendly goodbye. Walking across the street you find the town you're in is much larger and livelier then your home town. Things are much more modern and new, with freshly paved roads, electric street lamps, and plenty of electric/refractor driven cars.

After walking a ways and crossing the street in front of the hospital, you come to the pizza joint called "Pizza, Tofu, and Stuff." as the large neon sign reads. This building seems a bit older then the others, though from the way it's built it was probably another restaurant.

Entering through the doors, you walk up to the counter which is manned by a sleepy eyed teenager.

"Hello welcome to Pizza, Tofu, and Stuff." The teenager says with a yawn "I'm afraid we don't serve Tofu till 12:00, can I get anything for you?"

You're not all that disappointed about the tofu, but you're thankful it's not the other way around. You order a couple slices of pizza and some soda and wait by the counter.

Looking around you find that you're the only other person in the restaurant besides a young girl sitting in the corner. She's around your age and she looks somewhat familiar, wasn't she one of the nurses at the hospital?

You get your food, paying 15 Zenny for four slices of pizza and a large soda, and go to take a seat, but you can't help but notice just how sad the girl looks.

>[A] Go over and ask if you can sit. Some conversation with a local resident might give you and idea of where things are on the island and how things are going here.

You decide to go over and have a chat with the girl as you eat. Besides, if nothing else you should at least thank her for patching you up.

Tray in hand you walk over and set your tray down. The girl looks up from her own food in surprise.

"Hello, I'm Bass Treble. Do you work over at the hospital?"

"Yeah I do, or did work at the hospital..." the girl says

"Well I think you're the nurse who treated me yesterday. I'd just like to thank you for treating me. Can I sit down?"

The girl nods and you take a seat.

"So what do you mean by you did work at the hospital?" You ask.

The girl sighs and looks down, dejected. "I got fired. Well technically I was asked to 'leave for other opportunities' by my boss after he found out all my certifications were falsified. Technically he could have just fired me on the spot, probably could have gotten me arrested. But he was pretty nice about it..."

"Wait, you don't have any training?" You ask, putting a hand to your bandaged torso.

"No I do, I'm just not certified. I didn't go to school for my medical training, I learned it from helping local doctors on the smaller islands around where I grew up. See, when I was a little girl I was very, very sick. I spent most of my life in a wheel chair. My parents got sick of paying for medical bills so they just left me at a hospital. I probably would have died if one of the nurses hadn't basically adopted me and began paying the expenses for my stay there."

"Ouch, that's pretty rough..." You state, digging into your pizza.

"Yeah. I probably still would be at that hospital if it hadn't been for a Digger. I don't remember his name, I was only 12 at the time and I only spoke with him once or twice, but I remember he was young and wore a blue suit. He stopped by the hospital now and then and I took to chatting with him. Then one day the hospital gets a huge donation, and suddenly they have the equipment to make me all better. It turns out that Blue Digger was the one who made the donation. I got to speak to him one more time and thank him for everything he did, I gave him something I found but I wish there was more I could have done to thank him." The girl shrugs.

"I'm sorry, I don't mean to talk your ear off..."

"It's fine. What did you do after that?" You say, sipping your soda.

"Well, the nurse left the hospital and began to go from island to island helping the local doctors. Since I was basically her daughter I went along and over time I eventually decided I wanted to become a doctor. After 6 years of training under various doctors I came here and began working at the hospital. I falsified some certifications so I could get a job here, but as you can see that didn't turn out too well."

"Why don't you just go to medical school?" You ask.

"Medical schools cost money, and money is something I don't have. Plus I can't find a bank that will give me a loan due to...past issues. I don't know what I'm going to do..."

>[A] "Well I'm a Digger looking to make it rich. I need a partner or at least someone to help me out now and then. How would you like to team up with me?"

Finish your food and suck the last of your soda down, you stifle a burp and think over what the girl has told you.

"Well, I just became a Digger about a day or so ago and as you can see I already have a trek record of getting injured, beaten, and tortured. So, if you team up with me, you have a chance to make a lot of money, and I have a greater chance of not dying. So what do you say? I have to warn you, I don't have a lot of money at the moment and I'm pretty new at this, but I'm getting a Digger's License from the Mayor so I'll be able to start Digging soon." You smile honestly as you speak and the girl looks you over, as if weighing her options and trying to judge your character.

Eventually she smiles in return and nods. "Sure! My name is Ira. Ira Claire. I don't have a lot of money myself, and I'm not really cut out for fighting, but I'll help you anyway I can!"

"Alright. The first thing you can do is tell me where I can get some stuff fixed. I have some equipment that got wet and probably needs to be looked at, but I don't know much about electronics. Is there anyone around here who might be able to help us?" You ask.

"Well...there is Tom and Tom’s Junk Shop and Garage. They might be able to help, plus I heard they have a new employee who's a bigger gear head then the two owners are." Ira explains and works on finishing her own meal.

You have some time on your hands Bass. It's 8:00 AM now, you're shirtless and your equipment needs to be looked at. What do you want to do?

"Alright, do you know anywhere I can buy a shirt or a jacket or something? These gauze don't exactly leave a lot to the imagination." You say, being thankful the pirates didn't take your pants off.

"Well there's a thrift store next to Tom and Tom's, there's also a department store farther into town with a bunch of clothing stores if you want something new." Ira states.

"No, a thrift store is perfect. Let's go." You state, and leave the pizzer/tofu restaurant.

After a short walk, and 10 zenny later you leave the thrift store with a black t-shirt and a very nice, if somewhat beat up, black jacket with a fancy yellow trim.

You and Ira walk next door and enter Tom and Tom's Junk Shop and Garage. The place is unusual, like the cross between a Car Dealership and a junk yard.

Two men stand behind the counter, ether twins or doppelgangers of one another.

"Hello, I'm Tom." One says.

"And I'm also Tom." The other states.

"Yeah it gets pretty damn confusing" Tom One states.

"But it makes for some catchy store names. So how can we help you two?" Tom Two asks.

"Yeah I was wondering if you could look this over for me. I kind of crashed in the sea and a lot of my gear got wet..." You take off your pack and fish out the Buster Gun and the part you got from the ship.

"I'm sorry but we don't work with weapons anymore." Tom One says with a frown.

"Not after the Birthday Party/Funeral." Tom Two says, staring off into space with a horrified look on his face.

"So you can't help us?" Ira asks, with a frown.

"Well we didn't say that. We won't work on weapons, but our temporary employee probably will." Tom One says, shaking Tom Two out of his horrified trance.

"Just go on into the back and you'll find your man. If you need anything non-weapon related, just come to us." Tom Two motions for you to head to the back room as he speaks.

Walking past the twins you head into the backroom behind the counter, which turns out to be the garage mentioned in the store's name. Several lifts dot the floor, chains and pulley's hang from the ceiling, and an innumerous amount of tools line the walls and litter the work benches around the shop.

Quickly you spot two long legs sticking out from under a car with no wheels and no engine, working away at the underbelly of the rather run down looking machine.

"Uh, excuse me? I heard you were the guy to approach about getting work done on weapons?" You watch as a guy around your age and nearly twice your size, slides out from under the car and stands up, towering over you and Ira as he dusts himself off before holding out a friendly, grease cover hand.

"Yep. I'm Cruiser, Tom and Tom won't touch the things after some crazy accident a year back. I'm happy to work with them though. What do you have for me?"

You hand him your Buster Gun and the part and explained what happened to you as he looks it over.

"As long as you haven't fired it since it got wet everything should be fine. I should still probably take it apart, make sure everything is try and do some maintenance on it." Cruiser states, setting the Buster Gun on a work bench.

"How much will that cost?" You ask nervously.

"Oh only about 50 Zenny if nothing's wrong with it. If I find any faulty or broken parts I'll replace them for you, but you'll have to pay for them. I doubt I'll find anything too expensive though." Cruiser pats you on the shoulder reassuringly.

"Well what about this?" You ask, showing him the part you found.

"Huh, I think this is add on for the Buster Gun. I don't know what it does now, but I'll check it out after I'm finished working on your Buster Gun. Anything else?"

"Yeah, I found these schematics, do you think you could make this armor for me?" You pull out the laminated blue prints and spread them out on the work bench, Cruiser glancing them over with curious eyes.

"This is some pretty advanced materials used in this armor. It's not going to be cheap. It'll cost you 3000 Zenny for me to make one of these for you." Cruiser states.

"Crap, All I have is 2900 Zenny, and I don't know if I should blow all my money on a armored vest..." You say with a disappointed sigh.

"Huh, well I think I can work something out with you." Cruisers says with a smile. "You're a Digger right?"

"Yeah, I'm just starting but I'll have my license soon. Why?"

"Well I've been trying to get this car fixed up since I wound up on this Island after falling out with my last employer. Now It'd cost me about 30,000 Zenny to fix it up. However, if you can get me at least an A-Class refractor, I'll be able to put this baby on the road for 7000 Zenny. I have 10,000 Zenny saved up, so I'd be willing to put some money down and give you this vest in return for a A-Class Refractor. There's plenty of ruins on the islands, I'm sure a small, common refractor like and A-Class would be pretty easy to find. If that's not a sweet enough deal, I'll tell you where an old ship is. Well, that seems more than fair. A-Class Refractors probably aren't going to be trivial to find, but it'll make a good low-level fetch quest. I'm sure the next boss will be guarding one, or have one as a power source, or something like that. See you after the next dungeon, Cruiser.

Probably just the torso, though. It's a ballistic vest, not a full suit. Besides, we don't have polycap joints like Megaman does, so the limbs would look different anyway. We're currently an original model, unaltered Carbon. We don't get to look all cool until we upgrade some.

Yeah. It the vest but still.

Better than some megaman vests.

They only cover the top part of the torso.

Look at Zero from the zero games or the ZX games.

The vest is only on the top.

"Throw in the maintenance for free and you have a deal" You state.

"Haha, alright, you have a deal. Just don't go trying to run off without giving me my Refractor. I'm keeping the location of the ship to myself until I get it as insurance, but don't think I won't beat your ass if you try to cheat me." Cruiser says, cracking his knuckles.

"Hey, I see no reason to cheat you, I need a ship very badly. Once I have my license, my buster gun, and that vest I'll begin looking for a ruin to begin Digging in." You say, reassuringly.

"Alright, I'm just making sure. You don't seem like the kind of guy to do that." Cruiser says with laugh.

"So how long will it take to make the vest and work on my Buster Gun?" You ask.

"I'll be working on this till tomorrow. By then everything should be ready for you to us." Cruiser says.

"Alright, I'll stop by tomorrow. However, I just want to ask, where do you plan to go after you get your car finished? I'm going to need someone to fix up that ship and a mechanic to keep it in the air. How about it?"

"Hmmm, sounds exciting, but I'll have to think about it. Once you bring back that refractor I'll have an answer." Cruiser says.

"Alright. Oh, one more thing. Could you make the vest in black? Maybe give it a yellow trim? Thanks."

You leave the garage and exit back into front of the store, Ira practically beaming.

"Wow this is so exciting. I've only known you for ten minutes and already I'm happy I joined up with you. You're going to be Digging soon and soon we'll have a ship! This is going to be so cool!"

You look at the clock on the wall and see that it's only 8:30 AM. It's probably still too early to head to the Mayor's office, so you have some time to do what you wish.

What do you want to do Bass?

Looking around the store, you search for anything useful like maps, tools, canteens, or anything like that. All you find are a lot of odd parts, broken or run down appliances, and overall, junk.

"We get new inventory all the time, so check back every day or so, we'll probably have some stuff we didn't the day before." Tom One states as he sees you looking through the shelves of stuff.

"Ira do you know where I can find any general supplies? Like canteens, or tools?"

"Well there's Pete and Pete's General Store, they have everything the Department Store in town doesn't carry, so that would be your best bet. However don't mention the store around Tom and Tom, apparently they have some kind of grudge against the owners." Ira warns, glancing over to Tom and Tom.

You don't see anything interesting in the store at the moment, you make a mental note to check back tomorrow when you come to pick up your stuff.

You begin to wonder if every store owner in this town has some kind of twin or clone of them as you leave the Junk Store and head towards Pete and Pete's General Store, which is just down the road a ways.

As you walk there you ask Ira if she needs anything in terms of medical equipment.

"Well I don't think we can purchase anything major in town, but a proper med kit and some over the counter medicines from the general store would be a good store. Once we have a ship I can work on getting proper equipment and drugs. It'll probably be expensive, but think of it like an investment, it'll cost you money, but you may very well walk away with your life if something bad happens."

Ira makes a pretty sound point on why not to cheap out when it comes to medical supplies. You enter the general store and look around, seeing a wide selection of stuff on the isles and shelves. Behind the counter of the store you see alcohol, tobacco, plenty of firearms, and a whole lot of other stuff you'd probably want to keep out of the reach of children.

Manning the counter are two adults who, surprisingly, are not twins.

"Welcome to Pete and Pete's General Store. I'm Pete" The shorter of the two says.

"And I'm also Pete. We really hate our parents." The taller Pete states. "Is there anything we can help you with?"

"What kind of stuff do you sell here?"

"We sell lots of food, camping equipment, legal fire arms, alcohol, knives, some medical supplies, and a lot of other stuff. If you want clothes, electronics, home appliances, or anything we don't sell, check out the Department Store down the street we have a deal worked out with them. We'll see everything they don't and they'll sell everything we don't." Short Pete explains.

Well you need A med kit and some medicines, what else do you want to get Bass?

You have Ira help you make out a shopping list and get to work collecting the stuff.

You get:

>4 Days worth of dried food
>60 Feet of strong rope
>A flaregun and 10 flares
>2 Large canteens
>A large bowie hunting knife
>A few flashlights and batteries
>A good compass
>A solid helmet to protect you from falling crap and a head lamp.
>Some camping gear, a sleeping bag and a tent.
>Some notepads, paper, and note books with plenty of pens and pencils for drawing maps and notes.
>Some bright red chalk
>Two pieces of mirror and a protective case to put them in
>Two telescopic poles. They're advertised for stupid stuff, but you think you have some uses for them.
>A med kit with bandages, gauze, disinfectant, a suture kit, some over the counter drugs, and splints.

Bringing everything to the register all your gear comes to a total of 190 Zenny.

You already have a pretty strong backpack, but you buy an extra one for Ira. You also get a pair of two way radios, they're find of like Walkie Talkies, only they have better range and a bigger price tag. You also get a few more chalk colors.

That comes to a total of 250 Zenny. Paying Pete and Pete you are left with 2700 Zenny.

You pack everything into your bag and the extra one. Leaving the store, Ira offers to carry one.

"How do you know what kind of stuff you'll need?" Ira asks. "Did you get trained for this or something?"

"Not really, I just talked to a lot of Diggers, listened to their stories, and listened to a lot of radio programs." You state as you and Ira walk back to the hotel and drop your currently unneeded equipment off in your room.

"Hey, where do you live exactly Ira? You work at the hospital, do you own a house or rent an apartment?" You ask.

"Not really. actually stay at the church next door. I donate a lot of my money to charity, when the priest found out that I worked at the hospital next door he let me live in the church after he heard i was having trouble finding a place to stay. It's not much, but since it's free I've never complained." Ira states.

You think about asking her to share a hotel room with you, but thinking on it you realize that'll sound really, really sleazy and weird.

"I could rent you a room in town or at this hotel if you want." You offer as you set your own backpack down at the edge of the bed.

"Thanks, but I'll be fine at the church till we leave. I appreciate the offer though." Ira says with a smile.

Looking at the clock on the wall you see it's 9:00 AM. You could try visiting the mayor's office, according to the map it's in the Governmental Sector all the way across town. You could go straight there, or you could do some sight seeing on the way.

It's only 9'o clock and considering how long government crap is supposed to take, you figure you have plenty of time.

"Hey Ira. I figure I still have an hour or two before my license is ready, mind showing me around town?"

"Sure. There's not a whole lot to do on this Island, but I'll show you what there is to do.

You and Ira leave the hotel and she walks you though town. You've already seen most of what's in the 'Commercial Sector' but Ira takes you to Marie's Diner and the D&A Department Store. Marie's Diner looks like it's about as cheap as Pizza, Tofu, and Stuff.

The D&A Department Store has everything Pete & Pete's General Store doesn't. There's games, lots of clothes, bikes, hair products, an electronics store, and a furniture and mattress store.

Nothing of use to you now, but it might be useful to stop back here once you need to furnish the ship.

Walking through the residential area, you don't see a whole lot besides houses. Most of the actual services and restaurants appear to be ether at the Port, or in the 'Commercial Sector'. The houses in the residential area vary, some are small and affordable, other's are larger and more pricey. It housing tends to fluctuate between middle and lower class.

There is however a small Cinema in the Residential Sector, it's closed today but it'll be open tomorrow.

I wonder if Ira's parents were part of the Irish republican army.
>>
>>28843748
You visit the Port and much to your disgust, find there is a fish market with lots, and LOTS of fish. However you notice a lot of interesting stalls, some are even selling diving equipment and various odd ball items. You think of getting some diving equipment, but you decide to take things one step at a time and not get ahead of yourself.

After seeing the water processing plant and all the cargo ships in the harbor, you and Ira are walking to leave when you notice there's a part of town you haven't been.

"Hey what's down there?" You ask.

"Oh that's the industrial sector. That's where the power plant and the coal mine is."

"Coal mine?" You ask, eyebrow raised.

"Yeah. It can be burned as an alternative energy source to refractor energy. It's not remotely as efficient, and not remotely clean, but at the same time it's not remotely as expensive. The power plant here apparently has a emergency system where it can burn coal to produce power in the event one of the refractors is damaged or destroyed. This town gets a lot of it's income by digging up coal and selling it to the other islands. Not a lot of people sell coal so things have been really good around here." Ira explains

"Why didn't you take me down there?" You ask.

"Because it's pretty nasty, dirty, and most of the people at the hospital come from the industrial sector so I'd say it's easy to get injured there." Ira explains.

You and Ira walk around a bit more, but eventually the two of you make your way to the Governmental sector. It's smaller then the rest of the sectors, but the few buildings available are very high class and probably owned by wealthy individuals.

The Police Station and what you assume is the Militia HQ are located here, and at the center of the sector is City Hall. It’s a nice, large, white building with a Greek revival style to it.

Entering inside you and are greeted by soothing music. There's chairs and a waiting area, but you and Ira just walk to the front desk where a young lady in a fancy suit sits.

"Hello, how can I help you two?"

"I'm Bass Treble. I believe I'm supposed to see the mayor about getting a Digger's License?"

"Ah Mr. Treble. Police Chief Silver finished filling out the last pieces of paper work an hour ago. You can go up to the Mayor's office and get your license. I believe she wishes to speak with you"

The receptionist buzzes you in and you enter a set of double doors. You walk past various offices, a meeting room, and finally reach the mayor's office on the top floor.

Upon being allowed inside by two security officers, you notice how small and modest the office is. You expected a mayor's office to be larger and more robust, but it actually seems like an office, only with more windows and leg room.

"Ah you must be Bass Treble. It's a pleasure to meet you. I'm Mary Gold, mayor of Schlaf City. " The mayor is a somewhat older women in her early 30's with light brown hair and a very confident, professional look to her.

"It's a pleasure to meet you too. I have to say your town here is very nice, I couldn't have picked a better place to crash." You say with a smirk.

"Well I'm merely glad you survived. The information you provided us will allow us to better protect all the islands in this area from the Red Skulls. I assume you're here for your Digger's License?" The mayor walks over to her desk and picks a small card off of it.

(cont)
>>
>>28844731
"This is a Class C. It should allow you to legally dig in all the ruins you can find around here. When you go to other islands make sure to check in with the local authorities. How local ruins are classified can differ from island to island, some don't care as long as you have some kind of license, others are more strict on what class your license is. " The mayor hands it over and you can't help but smile as you hold the plastic card in your hands.

You've been dreaming of this moment your entire life and now, finally, you are an officially licensed Digger!

The mayor laughs as you smile down at the card like a kid who just got handed a chocolate cake.

"I can see you're very excited to start digging. If you have any questions you can ask them, but if you have other things to do you are free to leave"

My home town was attacked and I have no idea what kind of condition they left it in, so if hear anything do you think you could send me a message?" you ask, thinking about your father. >>28844796
"Do you know anything about the local dig sites?" You ask.

"Well I know there are four of them on the island. At one time a group of diggers marked their locations and planned on excavating them, but they never returned from the first ruin they entered and considering what our initial investigations suggested, they were most likely killed by Reaverbots." The mayor explains.

"Three of the ruins are on these small islands to the north west of here. There's one ruin in the forest somewhere, but it's been ages since anybody last went there so I'm afraid I don't know the exact location."

"Do you have any information on what the ruins hold?" You ask, taking notes.

"I'm afraid not. All I know for sure is that the ruins on the three small islands have very aggressive Reaverbots. The militia members I sent to investigate the Digger's disappearances were attacked several times outside of the ruins by Reaverbots. Thankfully the water between the small islands and the main land has kept the Reaverbots away, they don't tend to like the water. You'll probably need a small boat of some kind to get to the island ruins, unless you want to take another swim of course."

"Which ruins did the other Diggers get killed in? I'm probably going to leave that one for last..."

"I believe it was the largest of the smaller islands to the Northwest." The mayor says.

"Could you tell me about the Diggers? How many of them were there? How well were they armed. Did they have a reputation? What kind of license did they have?"

"They were a new group of 12 Diggers. Their leader was a more experienced Digger to my knowledge. They didn't have a big reputation but I believe they had a couple successful digs under their belts and were very cooperative with us. I don't recall what kind of weaponry they carried, but each Digger carried a weapon of some kind. They seemed quite competent, which gave me all the more reason to worry when they never left the ruins. If you wish to go into that ruin, prepare for the absolute worst." The mayor warns, shivering a little.

The thought of going into a ruin that got 12 people killed isn't exactly thrilling, but whatever is down there must be very, very important for such extreme defenses.

Take Ira out somewhere. Her choice, your treat. Didn't sound like she enjoys herself that often.

Training sounds appealing, but you doubt any amount of stretching or running will prepare you for what waits inside the Forest Ruins. Besides, you're still pretty banged up. A day of rest and relaxation sounds like a good idea.

You have lots of money, and you've seen the town but you don't have any kind of clue what you want to do. After some thought, you decide to ask what Ira wants to do. She's as much a stranger to you as you are to her, but you feel she's your first real friend and partner. She's taking more of a risk coming along with you then you are taking her along. At least you can defend yourself, Ira doesn't even have home to return too. If you stab her in the back, that'll be the end for her. No home, no job, no future.

She's taking a huge gamble helping you, so you decide it's only fitting to reward her.

"Hey Ira. What do you want to do? We can't do anything till my weapons and armor are out of the shop and I feel I should reward you for trusting me." You say, trying to make it sound as least awkward as possible.

"This isn't a date or anything is it?" Ira asks suspiciously. "If this was one big elaborate plot to ask me out you're going to need more then gauze to wrap yourself in when I'm done with you."

"What? No..." You say. "It's just, you're the first real friend I've had who didn't think fart singing should be an official sport. I feel we should do something fun before we throw ourselves head first into danger tomorrow. It's your treat, name whatever you want to and I'll be cool with it." You say with a smile, confident in that you'll have fun no matter what she chooses.

Ira scratches her head in thought for a moment, kicking a stray can into the street before snapping her fingers.

"I got it! Let's rent a boat and go fishing!"

"Sure...let's go." You say, gritting your teeth and burying the horror and fear, you actually manage to come off as somewhat happy and excited as the two of you walk to the docks and rent a boat, some fishing gear, and buy some bait.

You let Ira hold the stuff as you begin rowing the boat. You circle the island and find a quiet and secluded little fishing spot near the rocks. I'd almost be pleasant or romantic if you didn't want to gut yourself with a fish hook.

Why. Why did something this horrible have to happen after everything had turned out so good? Sure your father could very well be dead, sure you were tortured and probably wanted dead by the most powerful and deadly pirates to fly the skies, but at least you didn't have to go fishing!

You wane a smile as you bait your rod and throw your line into the water, stomach clenched in horror as you pray nothing will bite your line. Maybe Ira is a horrible fisher, maybe the heavens will favor you and you'll be able to go to bed without having to see a living-

"Fish!" Ira exclaims as you hear the whir of her fishing line and her frantic reeling, eyes widening in horror as the floundering body of a living breathing fish is yanked up from the water.

Ira holds it up above her head smiling as you look up at it in what can only be described as a look of terror and disgust.

“Are you OK Bass? Because you look kind of…sick.”

“I’m fine, just keep that thing away from me.” You say, trying not to look at the fish.

There's a long moment of silence as Ira just looks at you, the only noise filling your ears is the sound of the fish gasping and thrashing on the end of Ira's fishhook. Eventually Ira speaks.

“Are you…afraid of fish?” Ira asks in a tone of honest curiosity.

“No!” You say defensively, turning your head to look at her, only to lurch back as Ira holds the fish out in front of you.

I am just picturing Bass with a stern look on his face the entire time, picturing the destruction of all fish as he goes fishing. Just.. staring down the fish he catches.

"You are afraid! Why didn't you tell me?" Ira asks, perplexed, stilling holding the fish inches away from your face.

"I'm not afraid. I mean what's to be afraid of? It's cold, slimy body, that vacuous pit of a mouth, those empty, soulless eyes of it has that burn into your very soul. I mean, what's to be afraid of? I mean it's not like I've dreamed for the extinction of all fish or anything..." You say, sweat slowly beginning to pour down your face as you star into the dead, evil eyes of the fish in front of you.

Ira takes the fish into her hand, pulls it off the hook and throws it back into the water.

"So you've fought pirates, been tortured, and supposedly can laugh in the face of death, but you're afraid of fish?" Ira asks, looking at you with a mix of confusion and worry.

"Yes! Alright I'm afraid of fish! It's the one thing I'm actually afraid of OK? My Dad was a fisherman and when I was a little kid he brought me to the docks with him to show me this giant tuna he caught. It was beautiful, large, blue, with a huge gaping mouth so big I could crawl inside. Being a curious kid, I did crawl inside. Problem was the fish was ether alive, or acting on some reflex, because I got swallowed by the damn thing. I was trapped inside a Tuna for about 20 minutes, but it felt like years. I can never forget what happened, I still see that giant, blue, dead eyed monster in my dreams, mouth wide open and trying to eat me..."

Ira stares at you. Conflicting emotions flood her face, she's not sure if should laugh or try to comfort you.

>[A] Come clean with your fear and admit it's stupid. We're all flawed people and even if you can laugh in the face of death, you can't laugh in the face of fish.

>[B] Try to play it off as a joke. You don't want Ira thinking you're a loser or something! You're supposed to be a Digger! Not an ichthyophobe!

If it was rational it wouldn't be a fear, it would just be calculated caution. It's not like it's a major phobia, though. We can deal with fish. We just really, really don't like to. As long as we don't start fixating on it we'll be fine.

You take a deep breath. "OK, listen. I know my fear is stupid, but I'll admit that any day of the week. There's no real justification behind it outside of the 20 minutes in hell I faced inside that Tuna's belly. I can deal with fish if my life, or someone else's life hangs in the balance. It's just that I really, REALLY don't like dealing with them and if I have a choice, I'll choose not too."

Ira nods her head, letting out a sigh of relief now that she knows what to feel. "Alright. I don't have a problem with that. It's odd, but I think that just makes you more interesting. I wish you were a little more honest with me so you didn't waste the money renting this boat, but if it makes you feel any better I have a fear of being sick, and I'm not afraid of making that known because I think it's perfectly justified that I'm terrified of being trapped in a wheelchair again for the rest of my life."

The two of you chat for a while about your fears, with you commenting on how you were raised by a fisherman and named after a fish. After a while you realize how rather depressing the conversation has become and decide to try and lighten the mood.

"How about this. Let's just forget fishing and go on a nice boat ride?" You suggest.

"That sounds like a good idea." Ira says with a smile.

You and Ira take turns rowing around in the water, listening to the waves crash against the rocks, trying to ignore the fact that a fish now knows what you look like.

It's an odd, and somewhat disturbing evening. However you feel like you've learned a lot about Ira and you're sure Ira has learned a lot about you.

By the time you return to shore and bring the boat and fishing gear it's already very late. You and Ira part ways and return to your respective temporary residents. Returning to the inn you hop in the shower and crawl into bed, smiling to yourself as you drift into sleep.

Today was a good day, even if it involved fish. You have a Digger's License and tomorrow you'll be living the dream. Soon you'll have a ship and maybe even and engineer! Things are looking up. Nothing can get you down, not even a fish robot. I mean, what are the chances of one of those existing?

(This is where I'll end things tonight. Sorry for the slowness, but Chapter 4 will be better paced now that I've gotten things sorted out on my end. Thanks for playing!)

we need some fucking boots.

We didn't buy them.

Also, crosswire, update the item list and our vest advantage
>>
>>28848515
damn, I'm too late.

Does Bass get a bonus to will for this? Or maybe charisma, since he can talk about his fears with a straight face.

It's funny, I missed this run for my first DnD session which involved being hit with copius amounts of fish.
>>
>>28853646
You're right, we need boots and other outdoor clothing. Also climbing gear.

>>28853927
Maybe after our first official digging, we'll get some power-ups.
I'm guessing we're going for Toughness and Willpower?
>>
>>28853646
damn, we forgot about the lamp too. Flashlights are really useful(although they never seem to be needed in Legends games)

>>28853962
Yeah, I agree. The stats that improve Bass' damage potential will depend on the parts and weapons he picks up later on, bravery+agility for aim, intelligence for tracking and firing slow projectiles or making traps, and strength for MAXIMUM KICKING POWER.(Are there boots that improve kicking power/distance? Maybe a zetsaber that's activated by kicking?)

I'm guessing the boots we'll find on this island will just give us some minor protection.
There's probably some stuff out there that'd help us do stuff like dashes, slides and maybe even power kicks.

And making traps would be a great asset.
>>
>>28854057
don't forget wall-hanging/jumping

there's so much more we can do than just skates.

I can't imagine how digger tier traps would work, at least not without giant robot to lay them for you.

Maybe magnetized gloves? We can hang around on the ceiling and walk on the walls like Spiderman.

>kicking a stray can into the street

Did she kick it into a trash can? Cause if so that's 100 zenny for us.
>>
>>28854122
There are reaverbots that do that right? Maybe we should look into non-lethal reaverbot take downs? salvage a bit, maybe pocket a reaverbot eye or two?

...maybe I've been reading AoPH to long...

>isknowe
even Captcha agrees
>>
>>28854229
We could probably salvage some, but they probably have a self-destruct mechanism in case something like that happens.
Either way, reverse-engineering Reavertech would be pretty cool and useful, especially considering how the Red Skulls are apparently doing the same with whatever's in that refractor they got.

Attack on Pokemon Hunter Quest, one of the other quests running right now.

Setting of Titans, except people live in cities to hide from pokemon

fighting them consists of the 3d manuever gear plus surgically grafting pokemon bits on us. Yes. Also, some monster hunter creatures are there. Not many though.

there's quite a bit of emphasis on taking down the pokemon without destroying "useful bits"

also, there is a great risk of organ rejection or insanity due to the hormones produced by the pokemon bits.

Main character started as a 10 year old girl. Happy/horrifying times were had.
