"So you were an outlaw." You say, watching as McCain tests the bandages Tai put on him.

"Something like that, yeah." He responds, with a noncommittal shrug.

Marie starts speaking enthusiastically, "Not just any outlaw, one of the bloodiest and infamous outlaw in the last century, credited with countless attacks and robberies

McCain, for his part, rolls his eyes, "You'll find, Miss Robinson, that the truth is a bit far from what ever got reported."

Her eyes widen, "You mean even more attacks? Like night raids and stuff the UFK never acknowledged because it was too embarrassing?"

"Less. The last fight I took part in was in First Wood proper when we raided the commandant of the city watch. He damn near killed me. I spent the rest of the conflict recovering." McCain says.

"But that was before the bloodiest raids and battles even took place. Before that it was bombings and raids on supply depots." Marie says.

"You know how effective it is on morale when people attribute actions to someone who may as well be a ghost? The rebels turned me into a vengeful wraith in the eyes of the watch. Without my knowledge at that. Besides, aren't you a little young to know all this stuff?" McCain responds.

Marie for a moment looks a bit sheepish, "I... I like history. It is an interest of mine. Apologies."

"No need to apologize, I just don't fancy talking about those days. Nothin' good ever came of it." McCain says.

He turns to look at you, "Sorry Miss, I'd hoped my past was well behind me. If you've got any questions, I'll answer them, but I would prefer it in private. S'far as I know, Nitor might still be lookin' for me even after the better part of two decades."

No, just give some affirmation that it doesn't matter what happened before, like bust out laughing, and ask if our father knew.

especially that last part, if our father was okay with it then we will obviously be fine to.

"McCain, you are as close a friend as I know of to my family. If you think there is anything besides what I have just heard I need to know, I will listen, but I trust you regardless of your sharing anything further." You say, after some deliberation you add on, "I take it my father knew?"

McCain gives a slight chuckle, wincing a bit "More than I thought he did. I'll tell you about it later."

You take a bit of time to survey the full damage done. Outside of the corral being destroyed, and the superficial scorching of the side of the barn, there isn't much physical damage to the ranch sans a few broken windows. The carriage, on the other hand, took a beating when you used it for cover. Pockmarked with no less than 12 visible impact and the main door window shot out it looks a bit haggard.

On the porch of the house itself, you see a small letter from Enos telling you he was stopping in every other day due to a new shipment coming and left extra food in the chicken coop. Today must have been a day he was off, you don't think he'd balk at charging a bunch of bandits. Turning back you look at what your companions are doing. Marie is aloft, keeping watch on the road in case of a return, Tai and McCain are working on salvaging what they can from the broken parts of the corral fence. Veles on the other hand is still soaking the base of the barn only know he is trying to keep Dahz from eating the stream of water.

You head over to where Veles is still soaking the barn. "I think you can stop now."

He nods and you see the light glue blow of the sigil he traced in the blade fade into nothingness as the water stops.

"So, how does that work, is there some sort of secret art or something to that effect?."

Veles sheathes the blade and grins, "For some perhaps, I know some Casimiran Centaurs that spend lifetime in that pursuit. For our kind? Not so much. Really depends on what kind of magic you are trying, of those there are many types. Easiest would be those based off Draconian lineage for us. There it is just force of will, expectation that will occur because is unthinkable for it not to happen. Troll is based on signs, old symbols of power that have their own strength after so long of use. Memorization is key there. Casimiran's for example. Leviathan... well Leviathan is very interesting, lot of the power behind that is governing biological things. Miracle that is our bodies is largely due to Leviathan influences. Is not without its flaws however. Then there are other types, land magic and its plethora of nuances. Roc magic, not my area of expertise at all, Fae, which I am torn on how to classify. But is all moot though."

"Why is that?" You ask.

He shifts into snake tongue for this, <Because you have lived so long without anyone to teach you how to make use of those abilities. You mimic those around you, a good learning technique, but our structure is different from those with legs. You keep your back ramrod straight and lift yourself up. There is a harsh bend near where you lay on the ground, you use your lower half like an afterthought. This is fixable however, it will be more difficult since you have a plethora of bad habits to unlearn, and I've not once seen you use your claws, which makes me think that you've yet to use them. With my daughters, I had to help them extend them, otherwise they would tear the flesh and possibly damage the fingers. While it is a miracle, our bodies are not the best designed creations, in more ways than one. >

<Daughters?> You ask, first of hearing about it.

He gives you a bit of a wistful smile, <That was a long time ago, far longer than I care to remember. It is no matter. Tomorrow, if you so wish it, I can attempt to help you unlock the potential that is your birthright, or at least that is how my sire explained it. Then, perhaps, we can move on to thaumaturgy.>

<Don't you have to return to your place soon? Besides, I am more than eager to see what is on the other side of those mountains.>

<That can be arranged as well. It is all up to you.>

It is now late midday, you look to see the Tai and McCain pulling the last of the scrapped wood into a pile.

You rope Veles into helping you get lumber out from the meager store you have behind the barn. You see there the pile where someone must have bumped it, knocking some pieces over and alerting the arsonists to your allies. Utilizing relative lamia strength advantage you've got the materials needed to to rebuild the corral. Thankfully, none of the posts were damaged and it is a relatively simple matter to cut boards to length and affix them to the posts. You get Traveller and Greenbriar out of the pasture while Tai tries to wrangle the other two and bring them back to the corral.

McCain shows the new hands to the bunk quarters, Marie taking the second room while Tai, having finally wrangled the horses, begins unloading his cart. Letting them get situated, you chat with Veles learning a bit about the mountain he resides at. Apparently after his sire had left, he had turned many of the caverns into places for him to tinker with whatever caught his fancy when he wasn't outside. Asking him about heating when up in the cold mountains has him go on about thermal steam vents and their uses, along with mention of him having a makeshift forge deeper within. The picture he paints gives you the idea of a mountain with a large section of it honeycombed with passages and chambers, though he says it is nothing as grandiose as that.

With the bottom of the sun finally dipping below the horizon, you decide to have dinner. Tai once again works his magic, this time utilizing some of your stock of eggs to create a stir fry of sorts. While not overmuch thrilled with the idea of fried eggs, preferring yours hard boiled, you cannot deny it is quite good. Good food and good discussion prevail as it the last rays of sunlight fade and the hands turn themselves in, Veles offering to clean the dishes, leaving you and McCain sitting at the table, Dahz sprawled on the floor mat nearby.

Left in relative privacy, you think back on McCain's revelation. "What were you fighting for, with the partisans I mean."

He looks distant as he responds, "Honestly don't know Miss. Troubles were brewing there for a long time. Resentment, old feuds, ancient grievances. You think elves are standoffish towards outsiders, you sure as hell ain't seen what they do to family. First Wood government was militaristic, martial law was declared. I was an officer in the Nitor back then. They sent me in with 7 others, see what we could do to defuse things. We couldn't, then I caught the commandant of the watch talking with a Pheonix Empire operative. Shortly afterwards the Bakery riot happened."

"What happened?"

"Protest over the price of bread, Commandant called in cavalry. Horsemen being good at civilian control. There were casualties, so many pressing bodies it was easy for someone to fall, get trampled, lose their grip on their child's hand. The watch started hauling people out of their homes in the middle of the night. I sent a runner to the nitor posting as soon as this happened, he didn't make it out. Threw my lot in with the rebels then, figured I'd get out and inform the nitor as soon as I could. Help what folks I could. Soon as I disappeared I was reported wanted for defection."

"Couldn't you have sent a message to the nitor?"

"Not easily, tried several times. All communications were either under watch supervision or destroyed. Hiding in the slums or out in the woodlands didn't leave much room for other options. That and if I left, I figured more people would get hurt."

"So what did you do?"

"Embraced rebellion. Used my nitor training to drill the group of hotheads, malcontents, and other general rebels into a semi functional fighting force. Taught them military discipline, but most of all I played it smart. All my cards close to my chest. Spent the better part of three years playing a cat and mouse game with the watch. Improvised explosives we had no short supply of. Raided more than a few armories, watch 'protected' banks, highly publicized bombings. Made sure to let everyone know what was going to happen when we blew something, minized casualties but let the rest of the UFK know we were still kicking. Biggest hit was shattering part of the Groves. We didn't retaliate when the watch started killing family, started using parts of the disjointed grove as hideouts. Hid ourselves there, a few of the rebels were practitioners of the old ways, drew up oaths of brotherhood, elven rites like my tattoo, stuff that made us more capable of doing what we were doing. Then we got ambushed. Commandant and his phoenix pal had managed to root me and the other former nitor out. We managed to take him down, but I got seriously wounded. The boys pulled me back to one of the pockets of the grove."

"And then?"

"Then the rebels went and fucked up royally, if you'll pardon my language, they committed everything we had to overthrowing the rest of the government. No more burning their wallets with highly public bombings, they turned it into a war, and in doing so turned my men, six decent men, into ruthless killers. Revenge for our fallen, more bloody raids, more public executions, all credited to me to drop morale. The whole time I'm laid up not knowing what they are doing. So just as I had figured, this is when they nitor was called in. They couldn't let something like that stand."

"What happened with the Nitor?"

"In the eyes of the rebels, they were just more enemies, they became targets too. Populace didn't take kindly to that, rebels turned into another watch. By the time I had recovered my boys were commanding cells of their own. They called for one last push, something to 'throw the oppressors out' and I was to make my triumphant return. Looking over the cells I'd made a realization. One of the 'intelligence' men they had was the same damned Phoenix. Then I realized what had happened. He'd played both sides against each other just for the sake of destabilization. I arrived halfway through the battle, the village was ablaze, they'd hit a small community on the outskirts of First Wood. It held a nitor camp and field hospital. I rushed to find my men, tell them to fall back when I found them menacing a medic with a child in his arms."

A vaguely uneasy sense of familiarity creeps up on you, "And then?"

"I put my men down. They'd turned into exactly what I had been trained, raised, and known to fight. Common murderers. Naturally, elven brotherhood rites don't take kindly to that, so I paid the price."

"And that was?"

"It took the years I had pledged. Most of the time, you break a rite like that, it'll kill you. But, well, from what I understand, Elven magic is a bit alive, it takes into account intention and circumstances. It'll still punish you, but if you had valid reasons, it has a tendency to find loopholes."

"What does that mean?"

"I'm only 55. It took my youth, not my strength. Sealed itself off in the process, that's why my mark doesn't glow either."

"...Is that how you met my parents?"

He looks up at you quickly, ". The medic was your father. If I had to wager a guess, I'd say it was you he was holding. Didn't think to much of it at the time. Fully expected to drop dead after breaking the rite. Managed to crawl myself out of the city and hide. I wasn't recognized and spent the better part of a year on the lamb. Finally stowed away on a boat and wound up here. Signed on with a new ranch that had just started. Start a new life. Imagine my surprise when the owner is the man I'd seen that night. I figured he didn't recognize me but..." Here he pulls a letter out of his jacket, the same one you had given him when you had read the will. "Left a note explainin' he knew who he was when he hired me. Never blamed me for nothing and thanked me for my service these last 20 years. Told me to do what I can to look after you as well."

You are quiet for a time as he carefully puts the letter back into its envelope and jacket, "I... I'm not quite sure what to say." you manage, after some time.

"Don't worry your pretty little head over it Miss. Past is long dead and you can't very well try to change it. Just look forward to the next day." He pats you on your shoulder (The non bruised one) before he walks out to the bunkhouse.

You head to bed shortly afterwards, Veles, who seemed oblivious to the entire conversation, finished up the dishes and has laid out of on the couch snoring peacefully. You lay back and let sleep overtake you.

You see the ephemeral snake once more. Alone in the cave this time, no others appearing. It seems to stop at a table, fiddles with something for a bit, then moves on to another. This continues for a while. The snake doesn't seem frantic, but almost... broken in a way. It there seems to be no aim to its actions. It eventually comes to the mouth of the cave lingers a moment, looking back, then exits.

Sunlight on your face wakes you from your dream. You resist the urge to plunge deeper under covers and drag yourself out of bed. McCain has the Marie tending to the cattle, gliding lazily as she circles the herd. McCain and Tai are busying themselves repairing the superficial damage to the barn. You take a moment to put on a pot of coffee for your hands, noticing a small foil wrapped package near the back of the grill. It would appear they made you breakfast and left it on the warmer. You take the meal out to the front porch, enjoying it as you watch the sun rise, you catch McCain's eye and motion to the kettle near you. He nods but continues working. You finish up your breakfast, an egg and venison omelette with some unknowable herbs tucked in and clean up, leaving the kettle on the fire should they want some later. Leaving the your new help in the capable hands of McCain you head to where Veles is making the finishing touches on his little circle.

"What's all this?" You say as means of greeting.

"Its a little garish though isn't it?" you respond dubiously.

"Not at all, watch." He appears to channel something into the rune, and in an instant grass seems to appear, and soon it is nearly invisible.

"Impressive." You manage

Veles moves behind you, placing one hand on your shoulder and the other on the small of your back. Gently, he eases you into a lower stance, pushing you forward a bit as he brings his hand up, pushing your spine into a more gentle curve. It feels comfortable, almost natural as he does so, and it isn't hard to see why he suggested it. The only minor cause for concern is with having your back arched forward sticks your chest out, giving you the air of a soldier standing at attention. Despite that you find it easier to move about as your actions seem smoother and without unneeded motion. Veles has you make a couple laps around the house in this position and you take to it with ease. You figure you can keep this up, though you do catch yourself slipping into your old posture now and again, it is easy to make corrections.

Veles then takes your hands, inspecting the base of them and placing his thumb and forefinger on the knuckle. Here he applies pressure, and you feel something moving beneath your skin. You watch with fascination as the tip of something appear below the skin at the end of your finger. Veles takes a moment to explain the grooved bone structure of lamias, and how the claws, when extended, lock into place and inhibit finger movement. He then extends one of his own claws and makes a cut on the tip of your finger. No blood, but it peels back as the tip of the bonelike structure appears. He then applies more pressure to the joint and the rest of the claw appears.

He repeats this for each digit, and before long you are looking down at two sets of dangerous looking claws. With Veles' instruction, you slowly extend and retract them several times, though you are unable to do the single claw trick that he did, only managing to retract your thumb claws while the rest of the hand is out. Veles tells you its a matter of usage and with time it you'll likely get more dextrous, as that is how it went with his daughters. He seems please for some reason and questioning him on it reveals that sometimes, the channels can become ingrown, and the first extension can sometimes destroy the fingernails, with the claws in their place.

From here he moves to the back spines, getting behind you and placing a hand on either side of your neck. You tense a bit as he moves his thumbs up and down the base of your spinal column, searching for something. He then finds a soft area near the base of your skull and presses. You feel something run down your spine and hear him mutter a curse. You look behind you to see a row of very sharp spines running down from betwixt your shoulderblades to near the base of your tail. Flexing, you find you can retract those with ease. You turn to Veles who you see tending to a small nick in his arm. He shakes his head. "That never quite worked so well. Apologies about your clothing though."

You look down. Oh...

>Reaction?

A mix of frustration and thanks, followed by heading back to the cabin to get changed into something else.
I'm not exactly swimming in warm clothes here, Veles! But, er, thanks.

>>28862748
and then most likely extending and retracting the claws on our way back. You know, to test 'em out. Not the spines though, it will be hell enough to fix our stuff without a second set of holes.
>>
getting a few holes down the back isn't enough for much embarrassment, right?

The spines lay flat and then pop upwards much like anterior spiny rays on a fish, you just tore out the full back of your clothes.
>>

okay, moderate embarrassment and quick getaway to the house for changing it is.

Nah, lets be professional. Ask if there is anything else. like poison maybe?

Of course.

I bet that finger massage felt really good.

I bet it felt wuh-eird.

Oh god.

>>28864275
imagine a tongue massage. or a Lamia tonue massage with that prehensile tongue.

it's not a good imagining. I'm having an unpleasant time over here.

I don't know it might feel good, it is the most used muscle in your body.

I am actually gagging a little imagining it, so I think we will have to agree to disagree.
>>
i think the consensus is on asking if there's anything else in a businesslike manner, and then sprinting (slinting?) off to the house as quickly as possible once we're done talking.

You quickly grab at your torn cloths, retracting your spines as you do so. Holding one hand to your back and fighting to ignore the blush creeping up on you. "I'm not exactly swimming in warm clothes here, Veles! But, er, thanks."

He just gives a slight chuckle <No problem, though to surprise me. Not usual that someone takes so well to our bodies functions.>

You slip back into the snake cant, <Is that all? I remember reading something about poisons.>

Here he grimaces, <Not something I can teach you easily unfortunately. Not to mention there would be an issue with... well fumes. I do have something for that but it is not with me. There are other things though, but gazes would have to wait until I you know at least the basics of draconic magic.>

<Well, if there is nothing else> You say with a nervous chuckle, <I should probably go make myself decent.>

You can still see his amused grin as you slink off into your house. On the way you continue trying to extend and retract the claws on one hand. Once inside you hurry up to your room, nearly closing the door on your tail as you do so. Now in a modicum of privacy you practice extending and retracting your spines. You feel them lock into place at full extension, and at full retraction. Confident but not fully positive that you won't be destroying any more clothes, you put on an admittedly hard wearing outfit you haven't worn in a while.

>Action?

We need some custom made leather clothing for dem spines.

So, now onto magic? and ask him when he will be returning home and ask if we could accompany him.

We've had a lot of training time. Check with the farmhands to make sure the ranch is okay, make sure they all have guns in case of untoward activities, and then take veles back to his house.

We said we would.

You head back outside, <So Veles, you said the only thing holding me back from learning magic was stuff like that. So am I ready?>

He seems to give the matter a bit of thought. <Well, you are progressing faster than I had expected. I don't have any materials on me to show you how to do any of that though. I would have to go back to my place. I've been meaning to.>

<Any possibility of me coming along?> You ask, slightly unsure.

<I don't have a problem with it. Though are you sure you want to?>

You nod in affirmation before heading over to where McCain and Tai are finishing up the repairs on the barn. McCain however seems hesitant when you tell him your plans. "You sure you want to head out alone miss? I mean that's a vast expanse out there. We should be just fine with me and another person. Even with the threat of those fellas comin' back."

>You've got a point I'll take someone (Marie or Tai)
>Nah, better safe than sorry when it comes to the ranch. I should be fine.
Apologies, connection is getting spotty at the moment. Been trying to connect for the last hour. Hell of a snowstorm.

>>Nah, better safe than sorry when it comes to the ranch. I should be fine.
nah, we got the ancient lamia god with us.
>>
>>28868282
no problem, now I'll just worry about you getting snowed in and forced into autocannibalism instead of coyotes

Anyway, he's got something of a point about going out alone. Veles won't be with us for the trip back. Let's take Marie why not, we could get to know her some, and she can get a good view from an altitude to orient while flying later.

>>28868342
we'd be going it alone on the way back. Also, I feel you are may hold the guy in a -bit- too high of esteem.
>>
>>28868413
though, now that I think about it, it really matters not which ranch hand we bring.
We should probably just give a whistle and ask which wants to come.
>>
>>28868413
we can teleport back, and he may come back with us too.

I just wanna knuckle down with veles.
>>
>>28868437
I dunno, I sort of make it a policy to not use any teleporter I haven't seen someone else use first. But that may just be my paranoia.
>>
>>28868483
i trust veles
>>
>>28868518
I am the most worried guy possible over here, anon. It gets cold up in those mountains.

Fine, we'll go with just Veles and hope he got the teleporter right, under the caveats that A. we might just travel home normally and B. we tell the folks here some sort of signal we would use if in trouble. Does the three-shot danger code exist in wild west times?
>>
>>28868579
it's gonna be a lot farther than that. i imagine we could just start a forest fire.

"I'd rather not risk it when it comes to the ranch. Have Marie fly over to the nitor posting and let them know about the bandits. Might step up patrols a bit."

He but gives you a concerned glance, "Probably wise. I'll keep watch. Just don't get yourself in trouble okay?"

You nod, and go to get your pack. Restocking it with supplies similar to your surveying work, you head to where Veles is near the start of the woodlands.

<I thought you mentioned teleporting.> You say, as you both begin to slither into the woodlands.

<The rune won't work unless I make a similar one up near my place, right now it is simple magically aligned soil.>

<Ah> you respond as you follow him as you proceed along the river, to wherever he may be.
