Mover, Shaker,
Brute and Breaker.
Master, Tinker,
Blaster and Thinker,
Striker, Changer,
Trump and Stranger
- old rhyme invented to categorize different types of powers, author unknown.

On May 20th of 1982 on Earth Bet, a golden man of indeterminate race was spotted by the crew of an ocean liner crossing the Atlantic ocean, floating expressionless a hundred feet above the surface and somehow giving off an air of deep sadness. The crew and passengers of the ship both agreed to move closer, and the figure drew closer and reached out to touch a passenger reaching out to him before turning and flying away.

A few months later, the first superheroes started appearing - occasionally, in a situation of grave distress or trauma, an individual would develop supernatural powers. Called 'capes' by the community at large, such individuals would invariably live an interesting life, if not always a long or pleasant one.

You haven't paid much attention to that, however. You live on Earth Aleph, which has only a few capes - the vast majority are on Earth Bet, an alternate earth from which a superhero managed to open a portal several years back, though one capable only of transferring electrical information. The point of divergence between the two seems to be the appearance of the golden man, who has been named Scion - you don't know too much more about it, other than a vague recollection that the Star Wars prequels were even worse there than they are here.

You're cursing the lack of attention you paid to matters like alternate Earths and how capes work, because you've suddenly found yourself in a different world. You were sitting there minding your own business when a blinding flash of light filled your eyes and you woke up in...

You look down and notice you are male, and notice that beneath you is the sea floor. You've appeared a long way below the surface of the water judging by the popping in your ears.

You attempt to orient yourself, and as you do you notice another person in the water, several metres away and slightly lower than you, gently drifting in the current, dressed in a fine suit and holding a metal briefcase.

You get your bearings, and you're pretty sure your head is pointing towards the surface - your chest is feeling very tight, however.

You consider trying to bring him with you, but your head's hurting, your arms are aching, your chest is very tight and you don't know if you can spare the time. You try anyway, but you kick him off a little too forcefully and he floats further away from you, leaving you with the briefcase. With regret, you grab it and head towards the surface (briefcasers rolled high, helpers rolled low and had a penalty to boot).

You get to the surface and gasp for air, the sun filling your eyes. The taste of seawater is in your mouth, you're having to paddle hard to keep afloat because your clothes are weighing you down and you have a briefcase of unknown origin which you aren't sure whether you want to hold onto - but hey, at least it's sunny!

You see a beach a while off crowded with people, and a bunch more in the water, though not quite as far our as you are.

[] Go back under immediately, try to rescue him (roll 1d100)
[] Spend a few seconds getting your breath back, try to rescue him (roll 1d100)

A word on how the rolls work - actions with uncertain outcomes are rolled for, with success based on how high the roll was. Sometimes a certain action will have visible bonuses or penalties, and often invisible ones, sometimes both, with invisible modifiers being factors your character is unaware of.

Unless you have the right kind of precog, you won't know exactly what kind of numbers you need to hit, but it's not just between 0 and 100.

You immediately go back under the water, but you just spent a long time stressed and holding your breath so as soon as you go back under you realise that you're critically short of breath. The seawater is murky, but after a few seconds you get lucky and spot the man, drifting back and forth and apparently unconscious several metres below you. You have very little breath left, you're tired and your clothes are weighing you down, you're not sure if you can make it.

[] The right thing to do is risk it anyway, you're the only one who can save him (roll 1d100-50)
[] The right thing to do is go to the surface, take a while more to breathe and make sure you have enough air to definitely get to him - if he dies in the meanwhile that's a pity, but this way is more logical
[] The right thing to do is get to the surface and get out of here - you're not sure you can make it to shore in this state in the first place and the briefcase could be important, risking your life for someone who is very likely to already be dead is an idiot's maneuver.

Yes, it's cold. But its also accurate. We're probably not going to save him. There's a good chance he's already dead. That case might be important, andf it is Harbinger, he'd want us to take the mathematically favourable outcome.
Also... I want the shiny.

You head back to the surface, trying to keep where he was in mind. The idea of risking it all to grab him immediately crosses your mind, but you dismiss it - it would almost certainly get you killed for someone who is probably dead already.

Breaching the surface you let out a ragged gasp and begin rapidly sucking in more air, trying to make the dizziness go away. You see a Chinese man swimming rapidly towards you with powerful strokes, but he's still quite a ways off.

Because if we're in China, it's time to swim the hell away from our 'rescue' party.

You're still gasping for breath and trying to keep your head above water when he reaches you. Up close, you see he's in his mid twenties, with short black hair and red bathers - he reaches towards you, but before he touches you you let out a wheeze and manage to speak.

"There's someone down there, I couldn't reach him" you say as you point to where you think the man in the suit is. Without a word, he ducks below the surface and heads in the direction you pointed.

[] Wait around to recover some more, you're still not in great shape and you want to know what's going on with the suited guy
[] Start heading to surface, you're tired and you don't want to risk staying where you are - plus you don't want to get involved in the event in the long run, there could be consequences one way or another.

You're in two minds about things, both options look good. You paddle a bit further towards the shore, but slowly, taking it easy and getting your breath back, though the briefcase and your clothing are making it hard to go anywhere. You paddle back a respectable distance but not so far that it looks like you're trying to actually leave and stay there, paddling and gasping for breath.

After what seems like minutes the Chinese man bursts out of the water and gasps, though it's a measured breath, not ragged like yours was. He has the man in his arms and starts to try to resuscitate him, but it doesn't look like it's working.

You lose the outer layers, stripping down to the briefs and a singlet you had on and paddle over to where the Chinese man is alternating crushing the chest of and giving mouth-to-mouth to the guy in the suit. Moving through the water is a lot easier without your clothes dragging you down, and you reach him a lot quicker now that you're rested.

The Chinese man looks up at you with a sad look on his face and speaks in an accent you can't place. "Did you know him? Why were you both clothed?"

Freeform response! You're in shorts and a singlet, with a briefcase hidden behind your back, paddling water a hundred or so metres out from shore with a small boat rapidly approaching.

He makes another halfhearted attempt to resuscitate the suited man, and after that fails he replies - "Williamstown beach mate, just off the Esplanade". As he does so and the boat arrives, the accent clicks - Chinese, masked with Australian. He turns to the people in the boat- a fit looking young man and woman, both blonde and bronzed - and helps them lever the body into the speedboat, telling them what happened as he does. The girl immediately begins to attempt first aid, while the guy reaches a hand towards you.

Each vial has room to spare, and the fourth vial - clear, and labeled 'balance', is much larger and has a spout meant for pouring, clearly intended to add to the other vials.

The remaining three are labeled 'Majesty', 'Disruption' and 'Aegis' and are red, green and purple respectively.

You pause, several ideas floating around your head. On the one hand, drinking strange vials found in the briefcase of a drowning man in a suit after being mysteriously teleported into the ocean seems fairly risky, but on the other hand there's a faint possibility that what you think might be the case is true, in which case it's worth the risk.

You like the idea of disruption, but what if you just chugged all three?
You unstopper the vials and pause, considering your actions
>>
>>28851834
>>28851818

That is not a good idea.

The amount of Balance added to the vials affects how "stable" the powers they grant are. The less stable, the more powerful BUT the higher chance of turning into a mutant freak.

Aegis will be a tank power.

Disruption could be anything from disintegration beams to confusion rays.

Majesty is probably a Master power, possibly emotion manipulation.

You pause for a second. The urge to chug everything is overwhelming, and you don't remember being this reckless back home in Montreal.

You don't even know that. Could just be water with labels for all we know.

You sit up and remember... something. Space? Unfolding crystals, moving together? Nope, it's gone.

You do remember tossing back the vials though, then pouring the balance formula into your mouth, the ocean water for good measure and the contents of the nearest fountain for some reason.

You immediately pitch over and vomit for what seems like minutes, with blood coming out at the end

You didn't even see yourself move, you just raced forwards a little and instantly you were a hundred metres in front of where you had been.

You also feel... something. Like something is supposed to be different.
The sun also feels unnaturally nice, and you get the urge to just lie there and soak up its rays.
>>
>>28852065

You get the feeling that moving with any decent speed would see you at the other end of the park again, and with deliberation slowly step forwards. You don't go racing off, but you still feel... odd. You want to melt onto the ground, soak up the sun and wait.

[] Try racing somewhere

>>
You try to find other powers, but despite dancing, waving your hands, meditating and making stupid faces, nothing else happens.

You decide to give into the feeling and melt closer to the ground, and you hear screaming around you. Your vision drops to ground level and you can't feel any of your limbs, though you know you can still move. You find yourself... content. You want to wait like this, wait for something to eat to come past.
>>

>>
You head into the shade, and this too feels natural. You aren't as warm, but there could be food here. As you head into the shade you see a possum skitter towards the safety of a tree and without thinking, lash out and bite it. It struggles and you bite it again, and as it slows you find yourself swallowing it - it's only halfway through the motion that you notice what you're doing, and only then because something feels off - you should be able to do so much more, but something's wrong.
>>
You see a man approaching you with a big stick, holding it at the ready
>>
>>28852324

>>
Hunger fills you, and you decide to eat him. You grow, and you change - you lose that lightning urge to strike and don't want to bite to kill any more, but you feel stronger. A lot stronger. You want to crush him, swallow him whole.

You decide this is perfectly acceptable, and when he backs away as you grow you strike, coiling around him and squeezing him tight. You see yourself wrapping around him - a brown, yellow and black pattern of scales marks your body, squeezing him tighter and tigher. You feel ribs start to crack beneath you, and you feel hungry.
>>
>>28852415
This is awesome. Swallow him!
>>
He feebly twitches, and you see a woman watching start to scream as you wrap your body around him, crushing him further every second

As more people approach, the man's breath rattles out of him and he finally expires. Your jaw unhinges and you get ready to swallow him, but you're aware that there is a growing crowd, none wanting to get too close.

You decide to ditch the body and head towards the ocean. As you do so the crowds clear, warning sirens sounding from somewhere. The police aren't following you any more - as you cross the beach everything seems to have gone silent, and then you realise why.

Rising out of the water, dressed in a khaki uniform is a face you know well - you used to watch him on tv all the time as a kid, and you were really sad when he died.

How many people are here? We seem to be getting a lot fewer responses, which is weird, there were heaps of replies during the boring intro stuff.

-----------------

You wave your head from side to side, when he asks for a sign, and he continues. "Now I don't know what's happened to you or what you're feeling right now, but I know it can't be good. That's no reason to let everything go to shit though, any bloke deserves a second chance."

He pauses. "Can you... control yourself? Try to stay calm, see if you can return to normal"

They probably got mad that we drank all 3 1/2 vials and left.

Also try to turn back into a human. Tell the Croc that it's to late for us, but it isn't his fault. We were to weak.

------------------

You calm yourself and concentrate on turning back, and the return comes naturally to you. He smiles a warm, genuine smile as your vision lifts back to its normal height from the ground - he's actually a bit shorter than you, which you weren't expecting.

"See? Told ya you could do it!" he says, cutting off your attempt to tell him that it is too late for you. Sensing you wanted to speak, he pauses and waits for you.

A phone rings, and he answers it, keeping eye contact with you while listening. After a while he hangs up, and asks you if you'd like to tell him what happened.

You evade, telling him you remember being wet and then hot and then hungry, trying to make it sound like you weren't really aware of what was happening.

Everything falls silent for a bit, so hesitantly you ask "so, what happens now?" "That part's really up to you" he responds. "We don't actually know where you're from or who you are or exactly what your powers are - the best option, the one that will make everyone most willing to forgive you, would be you let me incapacitate you and we head back to HQ and process you - make sure you're not a danger to anyone, help you find out what's what, that kind of thing."

Not good enough for me. Run.
>>
To buy yourself time to think, you ask him how he's still alive, and then volunteer to swap information on how your powers work.

"I'm not sure why I should be dead, to be honest" he replies
>>
>>28853317
>"Diggers?"
Water might be fine, give us a chance to see if we could breath under it.
>>
>>28853317
Nope we're booking it.
Speed us out of here.
>>
>>28853317
>Is there any way we can go willingly with you that doesn't end up in a place of us being completely incapacitated? I don't like the thought of being unable to do anything if we are attacked by a "Villain".
I don't mind being escorted there, as you said, we can't hurt you, but at least give us the freedom to go of our own free will.
>>
>>28853336
Called it.
>>28853352
This is nice. And it might give us a chance to bolt once we're in Super World.
>>
>>28853336
So you are the famous wildlife wrestler?
>>
>>28853366
Also true.
As well as showing that we *can* be peaceful.
And perhaps that it was all just the trauma of our transformation...
>>
"Diggers?" you ask.
"The informal name for the ANZ guardians, the national cape group down under. We're pretty strongly linked to the protectorate, do our best to help out and make sure everyone's safe from the bad guys".

"Then can I go of my own free will?"

"Not an option I'm afraid, not right now. We've just seen you possibly lose control and kill a man, can't risk letting you cross paths with a civilian until we've got things sorted out"
>>
>>28853409
>"Not an option I'm afraid
Fucking told you. I respect the Croc, but not enough to blindly go into a lab to be ass fucked.

Run.
>>
>>28853409
Sure man, we can play nice for now. What's the worst that could happen?
>>
He stops and thinks, murmuring to himself.
"Maybe I was a bit hasty. Tell you what, what if I pulled some strings, and we head back to HQ together - no restraints, just me here in case things go awry."

"It'll be my arse on the line", he adds, obviously doing it as a show of trust. "Sound good?"
>>
>>28853396
Yeah, we did possibly speedball things that can rewrite our body and whatever, plus the sea water wasn't healthy either. Then there's the rush of basically hulking out and getting enjoyable, primal sensations from it.
>>28853409
Kinda ok with them bringing us in without a fight, if they have to catch us (which they're prepared to) it'll only make it harder in the future. Let's bide our time.
>>
>>28853437
Jesus fuck. You really want us to go with him, but I'm still taking a stance.
>>
You're hesitant, and the urge to run is getting stronger.

[] Stay and talk some more
[] Bolt for it
[] Go back with him
[] Agree to be restrained
>>
>>28853455
[] Agree to be restrained
force fields
>>
>>28853455
Bolt.
"We will meet again"
>>
>>28853453
Uh, no. HE really wants you to go with him. I hadn't figured you would stay to talk, but obviously if you do he's going to try to steer you towards that option.
>>
Rolled 60

>>28853437
Ssssssure*as we turn into a snake and hit him with a sneak attack*
>rolling d 100
>>
>>28853455
go with him
>>
>>28853437
YES.
I will miss you, delicious meat person.
>>28853455
>Just him, let him see we can be controlled and calm in a safe environment.
and possibly flee to join a super vill's crew
>>
Welp. Guess we're going to be taken to a lab and be processed. Which is CLEARLY the right thing to do seeing as how we ingested 3 1/2 super rare, powerful vials of... I don't know, Dark Matter or some shit. No chance that they'll find out and decided that we're too power to let live and kill us. Not at all.

Fucking idiots.

Run.
>>
>>28853455
[] Go back with him

Come on guys, he gave us leeway
>>
>>28853506
>Welp. Guess we're going to be taken to a lab and be processed. Which is CLEARLY the right thing to do seeing as how we ingested 3 1/2 super rare, powerful vials of... nope we don't rate killing with only one kill.
>>
>>28853506
We're probably not TOO powerful yet... and if we manage to talk him into getting us across the world border, we can get minions with super powers. Or be the minion. Whatever we want.
>>
>>28853530
>getting us across the world border
I think it's implied that we're already one Bet rather than our home world of Alph
>>
"You did the right thing, mate. Now what's going to happen is I'm going to hit you with a foam gun - tinker made invention, it's completely porous, won't interrupt with breathing or anything, it'll just immobilize you and once we're safe it'll be removed."

He makes a signal with his hand, and as he does several men in black uniforms with what you presume to be foam guns burst out from behind the stone wall surrounding the beach and rush towards you.

"Don't worry, I'll be here with you every step of the way"
>>
>>28853558
Welp. Nice going guys.
>>
>>28853558
Mmm, foam. Let's get in a comfortable position.
>>
>>28853555
Maybe, from the flash of light and everything.
>>28853558
Panic slightly, "I thought you said no restraints!"
>>
>>28853558
Give him a look that says "Okay, I;m tusting you on this, but I don't like foam."

Although
Like this guy>>28853583
Point out that he said "No restraints".
>>
>>28853558
Go quietly. They'd just snipe us if we tried to run.
>>
"I thought you said no restraints!" you say, panicking slightly.

He looks concerned, but you're already being covered in foam, which is hardening rapidly upon exposure to air. Within seconds you're surrounded by foam, and as everything darkens you feel yourself being moved, accompanied by a roaring sound.

As you contemplate what you've gotten yourself into, you have only one thought - goddamn diggers.
>>
>>28853605
We could try the underground thing again.
>>
>>28853619
Too late.
>>28853617
The start of darkness, overdoses not included.
>>
Well, that about sums that up, seems to be getting pretty late for a lot of people. I'm in a weird country, so I have no idea what times work - could people who've participated give me a good idea of what time of day would work in the future?
>>
>>28853666
Not sure mate.
It is 9:48pm here in Oz.
About midday in the UK.
Not sure about Ameribros.
Also
Thank you OP.
Really enjoying it so far.
Looking forward to session 2.
>>
>>28853666
It's nearly 4am here, so maybe anywhere between 6 to 18 hours from now is when I can join.
>>
>>28853666
5:49 AM where I live. 2sleepy.
>>
>>28853666
Also, are we a snake person? Or do we have to wait for a mirror or recording?
>>
>>28853688
Ameribro here. Sustained currently by this thread.
>>
>>28853666
Hey OP? What country do you live in anyhoo?
>>
>>28853722
Or at the very least, what time is it there? We need to find the time that works for everyone.
>>
>>28853697
Yep, snake person.
>>28853684
TELL ME MORE OF YOUR COUNTRY SO I DON'T FUCK THINGS UP
>>28853722
Currently in Japan
>>28853696
So, starting about 8-10 hours ago would make most sense?
>>
>>28853763
Neat to points 1 & 3, sounds good to 4. Also dropping name now.
>>
Well, I'll do the next thread in another 15 hours if that's workable for everyone, see you round. (6pm PST)
>>
>>28853801
Awesome, dis gun be good.
>>
>>28853763
1. Awesome.
2. You're doing a good job so far. People here are friendly, relaxed, open and have a strong sense of life/work balance. It's also culturally what you might expect of America and Britain about 20-30 (or more) years ago. Not in a bad way, more; friendly and not so rushed.
3. Sweet. How's things over there?
4. Sounds good. I won't be able to jump in again myself for another 18-20 hours though, so could someone archive this or so something? I wanna know what happens next.
>>
>>28853801
Yay!
>>
>>28853823
Yes. Archive. Someone who knows how, we need them.
>>
>>28853841
I guess I'll look up how. Any chance there's someone on who can archive?
>>28853823
They're... not so great, actually. It's kind of an extended working holiday and most of the natives have magically turned into assholes. It's why I picked worm as the subject for the quest thread, Japan is destroyed there >.<.
>>
>>28853763
>Yep, snake person
guess we should skip being a villain as transforming into a snake never helps

>>
>>28853876
Damn. Sorry man, you have my sympathies. Reckon things will improve anytime soon?
I don't really read the news
You alright yourself mate?

>>28853916
Excellent!
>>
>>28853940
It's not a news thing, it's just everyone got a whole lot more hostile once they knew I was staying
>>
Anyone here that can notify me when it starts? I can give you my twitter or email or something. i dont wanna miss this next time
>>
>>28853988
Why?
>>
Yeah, I can. I'm QMing, so if anyone wants to be emailed just send me their address and I'll send out a notification when it begins
>>
>>28854056
Basically seems to boil down to they love foreigners visiting, hate them staying.
>>
>>28854062
...ah.
Damn, that sucks.
Any ideas why? Seems quite..strange...compared to my experiences moving to Oz.
>>
>>28854076
Australians were welcoming as hell. I'm talking about staying in Japan...
