It's still hours away from daylight when you flip the switch to light up Oorai's temporary hanger- as the flourescent lights go on, one by one, they reveal a simple affair, meant more to keep the elements off the tanks within than to provide maintainance or repair. The last light to come on is the nearest, finally illuminating the massive shape of Black Jack beneith it. With a final glance behind you, you make your way in, shutting the door as you enter. "Good morning, Jack. Are you ready?"

You are Commander Russells of the M26E1 Pershing Heavy Tank "Black Jack", and maybe it's the last vestiges of a mostly sleepless night, but you can practically feel a trusting warmth from the tank in front you- Black Jack is ready. "Let's knock the hell out of them, then." You say with a smile, approaching the tank to get an early start on the maintainance checks.

~~~
Hours later, with the sun creeping up over the mountains to the West, you stand in a field with your crew, and the rest of Oorai's crew for the opening ceremony. You are daunted by what you see on Saunders' side- fifteen crews, each with five girls. Seventy five tankers to the Twenty seven of Oorai.
Kay and Miho formally approach each other, shaking hands and, with that show of sportsmanship, both teams bow to each other. The ceremony complete, the commanders walk back to their teams. Miho nods at you as she returns. "I need your radioman to play some music before the battle."
She smiles. "I'll trust your taste in the matter."
Ok, here's copy paste from Gu{P ideas document, prepare for probable stupid: Kuromorimine Maus: analogue to 40k Titan machine spirit or a daemon engine. Arrogant like Tiger II, but less ideology, more “I will obliterate all who stand before me, and grind their chassis under my treads.” Doesn’t care about crew, only person he acknowledges is Shiho, for being “the only person remotely worthy of his power” for her steel determination and merciless aggression, something that her spawn have failed to inherit. Miho’s feelings made her a disappointment and Maho’s care for her weak sister makes her even bigger disappointment. Finals will be his first real time into combat since his creation, and he wants enemies to kill.
Is this the link for the beginning of the Erika story?
The first two posts felt too much like an infodump. Use it sparingly.
The 3rd one was what I prefered more out of the story. I feel that it should have the larger chunk of the it. I'm a sucker for dialogue and interaction heavy writing, and I'd rather see their character quirks conveyed in such a manner.
You already did that satisfyingly in the Anchovy story. I'd certainly like to see more of that with Erika.
And that's it for me in terms of comments, unless I missed another Erika story?
I'm on a tablet right now, so responses might be slow.
I present to you: The real way Russells got the 90mm for Black Jack.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K6RUg-NkjY4
The Devil went down to 'Cali. He was lookin' for a soul to steal.
He was in a bind 'cause he was way behind. He was willing to make a deal
When he came across this young man sittin' in a Persing and runnin' it hot.
And the Devil jumped upon a hickory stump and said "Boy, let me tell you what."
"I bet you didn't know it, but I'm a tanker, too.
And if you'd care to take a dare I'll make a bet with you.
Now you drive a pretty good tank there, boy, but give the Devil his due.
I'll bet a '90 of gold against your soul 'cause I think I'm better than you."
The boy said, "My name's Russells, and it might be a sin,
But I'll take your bet; and you're gonna regret 'cause I'm the best there's ever been."
Russells, go grease up your tracks and run your engine hard.
'Cause Hell's broke loose in 'Cali and the Devil deals the cards.
And if you win you get this shiny '90 made of gold,
But if you lose the devil gets your soul.
(1/2)
Maus would be more "FINALLY, GIVE ME SOMETHING TO KILL!" Btw, thoughts
>>
The Devil jumped in his tank and he said, "I'll start this show."
And fire flew from his tailpipes as they started to glow.
And he traversed the gun around and it made an evil hiss.
And a band of demons jumped in and it sounded something like this.
When the Devil finished, Johnny said, "Well, you're pretty good ol' son,
But sit down in that chair right there and let me show you how it's done."
"Can you see it? It's huge and scarlet! "
"Ready, Rose, bringing you on target";
"Roy, load HVAP, fast as you please".
"See if you can pop it between the trees".
The Devil bowed his head because he knew that he'd been beat.
And he laid that golden '90 on the ground at Johnny's feet.
Johnny said, "Devil, just come on back if you ever wanna try again,
'Cause I've told you once--you son of a bitch--I'm the best there's ever been."
The radio played:
"Fire on the Mountain." Run, boys, run!
The Devil's in the house of the rising sun;
Chicken's in the bread pan picking out dough.
Granny, does your dog bite? No, child, no.
(Yeah, I know it's a bit shit. R8 me m8s.)
You discus idea for music with your crew as you ride toward's Oorai's starting area, a corner of the grounds slightly elevated, though still covered by wooded hills. (That seems to be the terrain theme for this battleground- hills and forest with open valleys in between.) "Just play something that'll get their blood pumping."
Patrick grins at you. "I got just the thing- think they've ever experienced ACDC?"
You like it- American aggression in perhaps its rawest, heavy medal form. You smile, leaning back in the seat of the Jeep. "Make it happen." You close your eyes and feel the morning sun on your face. Today is going to be good- it's time to finally unleash Black Jack upon these unsuspecting victims.
The jeep bumps and jostles to a stop as the driver pulls up to Jack, sitting in the morning sun where Robert had parked him hours ago. You smile up at him. "Alright, Gentlemen, Rose. SADDLE UP!" Your team is already on the ground, crawling up to their battle stations. You make it up to the turret, dropping into the Commander's hatch after Rose settles into the gunner's seat below you.
As you place the radio headset over your head, Patrick's already got the SCR-608 radio humming to life.
DONE! While the crew scurried about him, preparing him for his debut to the world, Maus brooded over the final match. As he contemplated all the ways he would blast the enemy away, he noticed the Mistress walking up. She was the only person remotely worthy of his power. None of these other people showed the determination merciless aggression to utterly destroy the opposition, something that her spawn have failed to inherit. Miho’s feelings made her a disappointment and Maho’s care for her weak sister makes her even bigger disappointment As Mistress stopped in front of him, the crew snapped to attention. Maus loved how easily Mistress put fear into everyone around her, like himself. He radiated anticipation and bloodlust to those nearby. His crew became unnerved, which brought a small smile to Mistress’s face. He felt the rest of the tanks steel themselves for battle. The Tiger was reviewing and checking himself with his commander, the Tiger II he had been stuck with in the museum was ranting again about “German technical superiority” and “Ubermachienen”. Maus couldn’t care less about any of that. This would be his first real time into combat since his creation. He would turn the battlefield into a living hell. Had he possessed a mouth or speaking equipment, he would have bellowed, “I will obliterate all who stand before me, and grind their chassis under my treads. OIL FOR THE TANK GOD! WRECKS FOR THE SCRAPPER! ”
Panzer IV(insert fan name here) felt good heading out to the latest tournament. He’d never faced the Americans in the war, he’d only been in France and North Africa, so this proved to be interesting. All the same, it felt good to be back on the field, leading the way. He was the oldest of the unit, so everyone else looked at him as “the grizzled veteran”, as a soldier might have put it. The unit he had from Ooarai’s old days was mostly back together. Even though their crews were new, they had the enthusiasm and the drive to learn. He enjoyed the times spent with a crew learning the sport far more than being driven by veterans. He got to see them grow as a unit and as friends. From the first match his crew had been on, they had taken tanking like a DUK to water. The gunner had a gentle, yet precise touch, the loader showed absolute love to all tanks, and the driver handled him like veteran, not counting that little drifting stunt. If he had a body with legs, he might have compared it to dislocating both knees and ankles. The commander from middle school. Miho… the second Nishizumi… The friends she had brought with her the before had not returned, but she seemed happy with her current friends. The commander… she had an innate grasp of senshado, but had been hesitating, imitating rather than being herself, but now she was forging her own command style, creating her own identity and circle of friends. Miho enjoyed spending time commanding tanks. The commander seemed to have a thing for the commander of that loudmouth Pershing, anytime he was near she gained newfound resolution, but he was used to love blooming on the battlefield. This upcoming match was going to be a good test of his experience. Stay fast, stay close, and hit the enemy in their weak spots, not matter what.
so the speed would be similar to the Super, but the armor would be balanced... given that BlackJack plays(ed) Super Pershing, I will still throw my vote behind that. we are the literal "tank" for the team, we take hits. I consider the speed loss a fair trade for spaced armor.
He was Hull No. 7657, from Fisher Tank Arsenal, Serial No. 5657. He was an M4A2 Sherman medium tank, designated for use in the European Theater of World War Two. After the European theater finished, he had been transferred to the United States Marine Corps and garrison duty on Okinawa. His nickname during the war had been Thundering Bison. Now he was Arekusanda, or Alexander. He had been knocked out of battle three times, tracked six, and completely lost his engine once. He understood reality. He was a cheap, easily replaced or repaired tank. But he was still a beautiful piece of American engineering, he had scored seven kills during the War that made all other wars look laughably small, and he knew what his duty had been. To hold a line, to assault a position, and to die fighting.
Now he was the personal tank for Kay, commander of the Saunders University High School Senshado team. He knew who she was. She was the daughter of an American GI and a celebrated Japanese senshado practicioner. He knew he didn't have the best armor. He didn't have the best gun. But he carried within him a hope for America, and Japan's, continued future, and, the spark of something not all were born with. Good tank commanders. Kay had it, he knew, he /felt/. Her desire for fair play in sport would probably translate well to the brutal necessity of war, if she would ever need it. He would fight, and die, well, to protect that future inside his crew compartment and turret. He would kill, and be killed with honor, and as well as tanks could die, to protect that.
>>
>>28891870
The upcoming fight was proving to be something he was sort of looking forward to. The chance for noble combat once more, the chance to prove the steel at Fisher Tank Arsenal was the best steel smelted. But on the opposing force, the M26 Pershing Hull No. 303. He'd heard of 303's exploits in Korea as he'd been retired and placed in a museum in France, a testament to the courage of the American boys that had bled to liberate Europe from Nazi oppression, and before he had been shut down for what he thought the final time, Hull No. 7657 had been damned proud of his younger brother, once more fighting the good fight.
On the other tread, he'd be fighting his younger brother, and damned if Hull No. 7657 was looking forward to that. He knew from practical experience that 90mm cannons and their ilk /hurt./ But damned if he'd let his engine run slower or his turret traverse a little less quickly. His honor as a TANK was on the line here, and he'd give it his all. For that was what Hull No. 7657, Fisher Tank Arsenal, Serial No. 5657, Thundering Bison, Alexander, had been forged to do: Fight, and die, well.
You check the comms gingerly. "Testing. Testing. One. Two. Three." You tap the mic with a finger. "The brown acid is not good. Stay away from the brown acid." You smile, remembering the story your grandfather had told you- one of the many that didn't relate to Black Jack or the war.
Patrick looks up at you from his station in the hull. "What the hell are you talking about?" He says, covering his own microphone. "You're live!"
Oh. You clear your throat. "Alright, Miho, you up?" You ask, quickly attempting to change the subject. Hopefully most of the crews hadn't gotten their sets up fast enough to hear that.
"Alright, Commander Nishizumi." You say smiling- the sun is shining, the engine's rumbling and it's a beautiful day to make some carnage. "Once more for the rest of the crews, what's the plan for today?" You ask- you'd gone over the plans earlier in the day along with the other commanders- now was the time to put it to action.
"We need to knock out that Firefly to get at their flag tank." Miho says, voice strong and mind already working hard. "So we're going to have to draw it out so Grizzly Team can take it down." She explains.
Rabbit Team's commander, Azusa speaks up. "So we're bait, then?"
Cheer up, we all make mistakes. Here, have some Tiger thoughts:
Had Tiger 216 been human, he would be best described at the moment as… meditating. He did this whenever he was not in combat: look back to old battles, plot them out in his mind, strategize, and counter strategize. He was satisfied with his role in life. Saved from rusting away in a French field, he has loyally served many generations of the Nishizumi. The other tanks might have talked about ideology, honor, fame, and the like, but he had no such distractions. Their job was to fight for the family, not wax philosophically. Shiho, “the matron” when she had commanded him, would have been great alongside some of the other SS commanders, if she ever learned flexibility in strategy. Maho, “the elder”, felt excellent, better than even the time he was commanded by Whitmann. He had heard the scuttlebutt from the younger crews of how Maho was the second coming of Heinz Guderian, Erwin Rommel, or even Walther Model. They were all completely right. Maho will be an excellent heir to the family, perhaps even gaining a career in the military. (1/2)
As Tiger 216’s ponders the Nishizumi family’s future, He wonders what happened to “the younger”, Miho. He felt great potential with her, but she seemed hesitant in her command. She hasn’t been seen since the match against the Soviets. It was the one time he had seen her act with true determination, instantly and selflessly jumping into a swollen, rushing river to save one of his smaller brethren and its crew. In Germany, such bravery would had gotten her an Iron Cross, First class, personally awarded by the Fuhrer, even if she had left without communicating to the rest of the unit. But after since the younger left, his commander has been… conflicted. He knows not what will come of it, but he does not care. The family has given him a new purpose, and the elder made him feel alive again. He will support the elder in her deeds, no matter what. For only in death does duty end… and Tiger 216 was not heading for the scrapyard beyond anytime soon. (1/2)
The Long 5cm KwK39 on the Pz.III worked fine against the base M4 Sherman in Tunisia and North Africa. The Short 75mm on the Earlier Panzer IVs was adequate, if not really the best tool for the task.
Besides, Just the Lee and StuG?
The only weak link here is the Pz.38(t), and they can scout well enough. Yuzu is a good driver.
You'd have to be within 500m to engage a Sherman from the rear and stand a chance of penetrating. And really, if you want to give her a tank that can do high RoF and still be effective, a M4A2(76)W is the best bet. 20 rpm on the 76mm M1A1C is good enough if you pack HVAP.
'Good morning, commander. Who shall we wake up today?'
Jeeves always wished he could say that whenever someone turned on his Rolls-Royce Meteor v12 engine. Sure, he weighed 40 tons, was made mostly of good Lancashire rolled steel, and what words he DID know could destroy houses, but Jeeves felt that was no excuse not to be a proper Englishtank.
The first thing he noticed was that he had been re-assembled. It was that telltale itch, that stiffness in the new parts that told him this wasn't his original engine, that the turret had been re-set, and that he was somewhere unfamiliar.
And his new commander was not English. Blast. Well, stiff upper lip and all that, but if he...no, wait...SHE. It was a girl. And there were four other girls. Only the co-driver was a man, and he seemed about to wet his knickers.
Jeeves immediately discarded any notions of misbehaving, willing his engine into the proper range of revs. He may have been a proud tank of Her Majesty's Royal Armored Corps, but NO proper Englishtank would be so rude as to malfunction in front of a lady.
It was a performance test, Jeeves quickly realized. He could sense other tanks nearby, of a wide range of countries, but they were all inactive, their hulls cool and their engines quiet. There was a Grant, one of those towering Yankee Lend-Lease affairs, a Pershing (Jeeves mentally made a note to greet the tank properly; he'd always wanted to meet one), and...who else...
Jeeves' attention was taken by a lurch of acceleration before he could fully identify the other tanks in the garage, but he knew what he had percieved. Those boxy hulls, the grey paint...
JERRIES. There were GERMANS in this garage. He seethed. He knew the war was over, but he was a proud Englishtank, and no true Briton ever let himself be stuffed into the same garage as one of those rotten Huns without proper complaint. Jeeves knew that he was a Senshado tank now - that was why all his crew were so young - and had no choice in whom he would garage with. So instead he decided if he couldn't knock out the Huns, he'd outperform them until their hulls rusted in shame.
The driver seemed to agree. She was Japanese, he could sense that, but she had all the driving sense of Her Majesty's best. Or perhaps it was simply that Jeeves really wanted to strut his stuff. Either way, the Meteor surged up to the redline as Jeeves plowed through a wall.
'RULE BRITANNIA!' he wanted to shout. Inside him, he felt the American co-driver tremble with fear. Jeeves wished he could sigh. He'd had so much hope for the Colonies.
As Jeeves returned to the garage he felt the Yank flee his crew compartment in terror. He silently hoped the poor fool wasn't a crew for that Grant, or - Heaven forbid - the Pershing. If he was....Jeeves decided not to contemplate the thought as his engine spun down. Hopefully he'd get a real co-driver, not some witless prat who shouldn't be near tanks, let alone in them.
>Sorry about the delay, had to whip up a proper shoop for this one.
I have the other Ooarai tanks personalities outlined. I'll just leave my notes here:
38(t): very hyper, almost insufferable since he got that garish paintjob
Type 89B I-Go: somewhat of a coward, main response to combat is “OHGODOHGODOHGODRUNRUNRUNRUNSHOOTITSHOOTITADSFJKLUH@BIBID#@BH... Holy **** I’m still alive!” Has been getting braver with Vollyball team, but getting turned into an adrenaline junkie.
Excelsior: British
StuG F: cool, calm, collected sniper. Main source of kills back in the day. Not used to the personality of crew, but they are growing on him, peculiarly the one with the old Heer Uniform.
Renault B1 bis: prideful, proud, and somewhat of a martyr complex. He’s a mixture of “Vive La France!” and “Drive me Closer, I want to hit them with my sword.”
M3 Lee: if you’ve read The Haunted Tank (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haunted_Tank), this is basically it, but with General Lee. The perfect Southern Gentleman, he is very protective of his crew, even if they are “excitable”. He enjoys his conversations with Ms. Saki. Glad that he’s not the only American on the team anymore, but finds the surfer culture of BlackJack’s crew and BlackJack’s aggressiveness somewhat distasteful. “This is not war, this is a demonstration of one’s skill, femininity, and honor”
"Just keep moving, ladies." You say. "Anyone takes a shot at you, Jack's gonna be returning fire." You reassure them- you were the team's guardian angel for the match. And if that didn't work, a vengeful angel was fine too.
"Only one or two shots though." Miho chides. "Then you need to relocate- we cannot let them get a bead on you, Russells." That was the other part of the plan- the part that even Rose didn't much like. Coldbore shots at range are never easy, even for Rose. And today damn near every shot was going to coldbore. But Miho's right- Black Jack was the key here- the only tank and the only crew that could reliably KO the Firefly coldbore.
"I know- get a couple off, then De-Ass with the Quickness." You say, popping up over the commander's hatch. "Any ideas for initial positioning?"
Miho smiles across at you from her Pz. IV's cupola, holding a map. "There's a ridge along Grid G-22- plenty of foliage and you can duck into cover behind it after your shots- just keep popping onto the ridge to make shots and they'll never make you." You reach down and unfold your own map- she's got a good eye.
"Alright then, as they say... Panzer Vor!" You call through the radio- the cry is echoed across the team. And that's when you hear the bells toll.
Personally, I use two main rules:
First is the "World of Tanks" Rule: The vehical has to be fully tracked, so no half-tracks of AFVs.
Seconds: The crew must be fully enclosed- nothing open topped.
The first rule is thematic, the second is for safety reasons.
>>
Having a crewmember decapitated by an enemy shell would be the pits, especially in a sport.
I know the rules mention that there are conversion kits for units with open tops, but I was thinking as a "what-if", somebody fielded a formation like this:
Mechanized drive-by
Build a team based around Hetzing, point blank engagements, high speed combat, APCs using infantry weapons, and company of heroes tactics? Why not?
Inspiration: Company of heroes lines: “I know it’s technically impossible to shoot a Panzerschrek from an enclosed position, don’t RTFM next time, and you won’t care so much.” “A REAL MAN fights a panzer at CLOSE RANGE!” “Panzerschrek, time to un-pimp his ride!”
Uses fast Half-tracks, light tanks, and small TDs. Suggested units:
Sd.Kfz. 251/22, Has Pz. IV 7.5 cm Pak 40
234/2 "Puma", fast, agile, with turret. Give it APCR or HEAT to compensate for small caliber.
234/4 "Pakwagen", you can never have too many Paks, fixed or turreted
Panzerjäger Bren 731(e), triple Panzerschrek mount=reloadable HEAT rockets=Hetzer buddy.
Goliath tracked mine: remote control AT unit.
Note: again with artillery thoughts, but if you all are ok with the versions that had onboard mortars, we can field those too, or use the ones with mounted rocket racks.
Light Tanks
VK 1602 "Leopard", committee won’t accept armored cars? Fine, just put the turret on the tank it was supposed to be on and call it a day.
M24 Chaffee, it’s a Chaffee, go bananas.
Light Tank Mk VII Tetrarch, grab a little John from Darleeing, stick on the gun, and then drive it like you stole it.
BT-7, the famous BT-7, its fast on and off-road. BT-7M is up armored, slightly less speed. Go for the BT-7A and you get the KV-2’s little cousin.
>>28894030
Ah. I've just had that idea sice I saw a GuP fanfic where Anchovy had the tankette crews run out and take out enemy tanks with satchel charges. one thing led to another, and I made the list. All I really just wanted to do a Panzerschrek drive-by on somebody.
Are half tracks even Senshado legal? I ain't even sure that the magical "carbon armor" that protects tank crews would be enough to stop tank shells hitting half tracks or wheeled vehicles.
>>
>>28894099
Speaking of odd ideas, IIRC, European tanking is brigade level shit. You can't have that many tanks without supporting infantry. How do they simulate the infantry? Do they bring in units from the national militaries and treat it like an exercise for the infantry guys? Do they have units of infantry formed from students at the schools?
Arguably, could you then reenact battles from WWI and WWII with this brigade level business?
I like to think there was a crisis point early on in Senshado that led to the ruling of no open-topped vehicles--like an M7 Priest getting flipped over by a shot from an Elefant and a kid lost her legs.
Not that that's a good thing to think about or anything, but I like to think of it like NASCAR or F1 racing--rules for certain things don't get set in place until someone ends up being plastered across the track.
Ok, another hypothetical "what if". I was watching Ep. 11, and I realized that the mountain crater that Ooarai digs in in front of would make a good firebase. You keep track of the positions that Miho calls out for the other teams; it's a good even spread where ecah tank is within support distance of the next, and the entire search pattern is in nice easy view of your ridge. "I'm rollin' thunder... Drivin rain." Patrick sings along below. "I'm coming on like a hurricane!"
You smile at his enthusiasm. "Turn it up, Patrick!" You call. "My lightnin' across the sky- you're only young but you're gonna die!" You start singing. You can already hear Azusa singing along to the lyrics from Rabbit's Lee- of course she'd know the song. You're actually a bit surprised at your surprise.
The music has peaked and is starting to fade back down as you reach your defilade position at the top of the hill- a small clearing between trees that gives your gun plenty of room to traverse. You drop down into the turret again and put your eye up against the commander's scope- better magnification as you scan the trees along the next ridge.
>mfw all these tanks' personalities are actually the reincarnated souls of crew that died in them mashed together
Red Vanya idled contently, massive engine heating the cold hangar space as Nonna worked his turret in a series of circles, half circles, and firing arcs. The annual national Senshado tournament was approaching, and his turret ring had been freshly lubed. Swiveling with the swiftness of wing and surety of beat guaranteed to the Golden Eagle, Vanya listened quietly as Nonna talked at him.
"Honestly, Vanya, Katyusha is a good commander, but she's so dependent on me. I'm not sure I want to tank for the rest of my life, you know. A life beyond the oil and steel, gunpowder and diesel, would be nice." Vanya would have replied reassuringly and with a pat on the shoulder, but he settled for rumbling a little louder at Nonna, oblivious as she continued softly.
"She doesn't even sleep alone! She insists I sleep on a cot in her room, 'to aid Katyusha as necessary.' It's not like I don't sleep next door anyways, or that I'm with her almost every waking moment. What should I do, Vanya?" Causing the radio tubes in his turret to hum, if Hull No. 768 could have spoken, he probably would have said something along the lines, "Tell her you need time alone, I guess, and then make it happen?"
Instead, Nonna sighed slowly and slumped backwards in the chair. "I don't know, Vanya. When I'm with you, at least everything is simple. You're a tank. You fight. What do you want out of life? Maybe an oil bath and new spark plugs, but nothing's complicated for you." And Vanya felt bad, because he knew it was true. He was perfectly content to protect the girls within him during a battle, fight, and have his spark plugs replaced. Silently he vowed he'd always look after young Nonna in his turret, and listened to her begin humming a song from "Alexander Nevsky." At least she was, if not happy, not sad, he comforted himself. Perhaps he could see about doing something for her. But how, with no hands? Such was the eternal damnation of existence as a tank.
I disagree. A tank's soul isn't forged in the heat of battle, it's forged in the heat of the foundry, the steel plant where the metal is cast and rolled into the hull that is the tank's core.
A tank that has never seen battle, that has never had anyone perish inside it is not a soulless automaton. It's a lucky, but naive young bull, roaring and ready to take on the world.
"Rose, you see anything?" You ask, moving the periscope back and forth along the opposite hillside. Rose's gunner's sites are a narrower view, but higher magnification.
"Negati-Wait!" Rose says. "Eleven'o'clock... See the gulley?" You turn your scope to check. "Ok, move up along the gulley and there's a dead tree... Twenty yards left of that..." You adjust your periscope following her directions and you finally see it- not much but you can see the distinct outline of a Sherman turret.
You call out towards the closest tank. "Duck Team- Target along the ridge..." You do some mental math. "Two'o'clock high, look for..."
"Engaging target." Erwin says calmly over the radio. Almost immediately afterwords, a 75mm shell plows into the hill just below the Saunders M4.
"Correct up 5, left 3." You call back, trying to help the assault gun put it's second round on target. Meanwhile, Duck's Excelsior has stopped, it's turret turning to track up the hill- A mistake! If there's more than that M4 up there- and there likely is- they'll be a sitting Duck.
Miho sees the situation. "Duck Team! Displace! Displace!" She shouts- from Jack's position above you see a tree shake as a M4 emerges, and then another.
"Miho- target's sighted!" You call. "Permission to enga-?" You start.
"Shoot! Shoot them!" Miho interrupts. Well there's your answer.
"Rose. Engage." You respond. Watching as a second round from the StuG finds it's mark on the first target- the first kill of the day "Second target over... On target." You place the gun on the second Sherman. "Roy, load AP." It was a long shot and you wanted a heavier round to cut through windage better. You feel the turret twitch and torque as Rose makes the final corrections.
"Up!" Roy calls from the loader's position.
"Firing." Rose says quietly. Black Jack rocks backwards on his treads under the power of the shot- despite this you keep eyes on target and trace the shell's trajectory as it finds home.
"Good hit!" You call, watching the Sherman's glacis plate disappear under and explosion. The last Sherman, not knowing how many guns on are on it, pulls back across the arc of the hill. "Third Sherman is backing off!" You reach down and give Rose's shoulder a congratulatory squeeze. You almost forget the other part.
"Duck Team! Get to cover!" You say, going over the ridge to make sure nothing was missed. "Creekbed, twenty meters to your right." That engagement had gone poorly for Saunders, but Kay'd brought the tanks to absorb those losses. You want to stay and try to get that third Sherman, but by now every one of Saunders' guns was pointed at this ridge watching for you.
"Going for cover!" Noriko says as the Excelsior turns and moves towards the foliage. "Thanks Grizzly!"
"Richard, back down." You say- too early in the match to be greedy- time to get back and let Kay make another bad move. Black Jack drops into reverse and falls back down the back of the hill, turning as Richard pointed him towards the next good vantage point.
As the turret comes level those, you see a Sherman's turret appear from around a hill further down the rear of the ridgeline. And then another.
And then a third. "Load AP!" You shout over to Roy. "Contact twelve-o-clock! Three targets!" You say, not bothering to try to guess distance- they were close.
Yeah, this was seemingly like it was a bit too easy. Time to earn your keep!
