You are Princess Astoria Baelwynd, heir to the Kingdom of Rosslengo.

Vast mountain ranges form a natural border around the kingdom that is your home, and their protection is a double edged sword. While an invading army would have to go through one of the two heavily armed fortresses that are relatively easy to stock and defend, it also means that these mountains are infested with all manner of vile creature, some never seen elsewhere in the world. You are in a cave housing some of those beasts right now.

From a darkened helm, glowing red eyes regard you for a moment before turning to the stone archway ahead, "Princess, I believe the beast behind the increased raids lies ahead." The tall, pale man has been your bodyguard for your entire life, stoically defending you from things that seek to harm you. You haven't made his job easy.

"Inatkan, please," A young pink haired girl in a top hat giggles, "It isn't like there are many other places it could be hiding at. We've cleared the whole cave complex of goblins with no sign of anything out of the ordinary." Loryana has been a friend of yours for a long time, though she can try your patience. She never seems to take anything seriously, but you have to admit her prowess with magic is anything but useless.

A short, dark haired girl holding a sword makes the last member of your party. Dionaea is usually quiet and glum, though her skill with a blade goes far beyond your own. They all seem to be looking at you, wondering what you next move is.

>I'll charge in and try to find the leader. 'Naea, you watch my back. Inatkan and Loryana? Mop up anything that slips past me. (Tomboy archetype. You are strong and brash, but a little arrogant and awkward in social settings.)
>Inatkan, you take the lead. 'Naea and I will support your flanks, and Loryana will provide covering fire. (Ice Queen archetype. Good grasp of tactics. Ambitious, and people don't seem to like you.)

Your guardian nods once, before hefting his axe up, prepared for whats to come. 'Naea seems to prepare herself for a moment as well.

"Aww, I don't get to have any fun?" Loryana pouts, half jokingly. Her bloodlust can sometimes be... frightening.

Still, you give Inatkan the signal, and he bursts into motion. Your boots clack on the crude stonework floor as you follow him. As you enter the chamber, cries can be heard all around you. They were preparing for this moment as well. Inatkan's axe rises and falls, like some sort of charnel lumberjack, as he murders his way through the greenskinned monsters swarming around you. He presses on, heedless of the damage he has taken as he gets to his bloody work, limbs and life flying from his axe edge.

Though his flurry of attacks makes quick work of the ones in front of him, your small band is still getting surrounded. The sound of air being cut and the click of a blade into a sheath is heard again and again as 'Naea cuts down another goblin brute who attempts to flank you. You work your blade like a needle, stabbing and slashing in smooth, elegant and flowing motions until the smell of ozone rips through your nose, and a searing pain lances through you as you fall to your knees.

A goblin wearing a goat skull on his head cackles as he begins to dance once more, attempting to call up another bolt of lightning. A blast of fire seems to melt him away and you turn to Loryana, who is sticking her tongue out and giving you a thumbs up. Gritting your teeth, you ready yourself once more... only to find the slaughter complete. The room, now bloodied, is empty except for one figure on a throne of gold and bones.

It is a massive beast, with a wolf like head and ram horns. "A geliactrix?" Loryana hisses curiously, "These goblins sure have summoned something scary. I don't even know how they could have managed a summoning like this... be careful. My magic won't do much good against it."

The beast stands up with a roar.

With a jagged and cruel piece of iron in one meaty fist, the demon lashes out at your bodyguard. Inatkan manages to catch the club on the heft of his axe, barely avoiding a heavy blow. As he reels from being knocked aside, the beast swings again, batting the servant across the room.

Explosions pepper the demon's skin as Loryana gets to work, seemingly incanting endlessly as she dumps spell after spell into the beast.

""Naea!" You yell, readying your guard. "Quick, while Loryana has it distracted...!" She seems to understand what you mean, slipping behind it and cutting at its legs. With a pained howl, it spins about hammering the ground repeatedly as Dionaea smoothly dodges the blows.

Loryana doubles over, panting. She may have exhausted her magical supply for now, and you don't know how long Dionaea can stall the animal. Inatkan should be fine, but who knows when he'll be able to get back into action. It's up to you to finish the wounded demon.

>You've got a sword, and an exposed back. It isn't exactly honorable, but the solution is obvious. Hop on the beast and strike it! (Rogue build. You are good with your hands and plenty agile. You might get up to no good a little more than royalty should.)
>A princess is always prepared. Rifle through your pack quickly, and prepare the charges. Arcane magics may have little effect on the demon, but explosives will surely still do the trick. Toss some grenados at the beast! (Engineer build. You love toys. Even if they are sometimes deadly. Intelligent and inquisitive... sometimes to a fault.)
>The sorcerous line of kings didn't end with your grandfather. Though arcane energies didn't seem to have much affect, your powers are a little more subtle. A quick incantation to enhance your blade and physical attributes, and flank the beast! With 'Naea, it should be short work. (Spellblade build. While not archmage material, the magical artes fascinate you. Good with a sword. Maybe you should read less forbidden grimoires.)

With its back turned to you, you take the opportunity to rifle through one of your bags. Typically you use these for breaking into more secure lairs, but from how little the demon has slowed down from more conventional methods you figure you might need to up the ante a bit.

You grab a thick, heavy, and square like object. Taking a can of adhesive, you quickly coat the underside before tossing it at the beast. "Woah, 'Tori... you can't be serious?" Loryana says in disbelief. Seeing your grim resolve she yells out, "Hey, 'Naea! You might wanna move. Like right now!" The satchel catches on the fur of the demon's back, but its too distracted by the swordswoman to care. You pull a round, brown object out, and with a gloved thumb, pop a metal pin out. A hissing sound starts, and you twist back, readying your aim. Seeing the grenado in your hand, 'Naea's eyes go wide before she bolts away from the beast. You toss it lightly and immediately crouch down and cover your ears. The demon turns in time to see the short fuse explode next to its face... igniting the satchel on your back. A blinding light fills the room and a ringing fills your ears. When your vision returns, Inatkan is standing over you, shielding you from the remains of the demon as they rain down. He knows better than to get your dress dirty, of course. "'Toriiiiii...!" Dionaea grumbles. "A little more warning next time?"

You give a short laugh. "Well, if I waited a bit longer you might have ended up paste." Your gore covered friend seems less than impressed. Loryana, who was crouched down with the brim of her top hat pulled down around her head looks up. "Oh. It's gone?" With a sigh she stands up, seemingly regaining all her energy before pointing at the goblin's stash. "Now! For the loot!"

A golden horde litters the edge of the room. The goblins from this area were never much of a threat, but recently their raids had increased in ferocity and scope.

The last time, they had even assaulted a village. The refugees of that attack were grumbling about these raids, and word had reach your ears. Your father had always given tacit approval for your excursions, confident that Inatkan could protect you from whatever danger you encounter, and so you set out to get to the bottom of it.

It didn't take you long to find the cave, and goblins were a little beneath you, frankly, so clearing it out wasn't much trouble either. Still, you didn't expect a demon of this caliber to behind the raids.

Loryana giggles as she emerges, decked out in jewelry. "This should all go nicely into my collection. What about you, 'Naea, you find anything good?" The dark haired girl's pockets bulge noticeably from whatever she had gathered. You are sure it was strange nick knacks. The girl had odd hobbies. Then again, the various alchemical contents of your room didn't leave much room for judgement.

The stone walls of the cave shake slightly. "The explosion may have weakened the structure, Princess." Inatkan tells you, glancing around the room quickly. "It should be fine for a while, but I encourage you to hurry." Your guardian has no need for money. The Baelwynd line... well. Long, long ago they *may* have tried to take over the world. Inatkan is an undead servant of that time and army, bound in service to the royal line. As far as you know, he is the only survivor of that era of darkness.

Still, a number of things have caught your eye.

As much as you'd like to get your hands on some rare materials, you just can't let all that research go to waste... You think for a moment before looking at Inatkan. He's not doing anything... "Ina! If I tell you what to look for in that demon's corpse, you think you could find it for me?" You begin eying the pile of loot, hoping goblins would save the notes rather than just burn them.

"Of course, Princess. I'm ever your servant." Though you're a little distracted you do your best to describe the materials you would be looking for. You've never seen them yourself, only read about them, so you hope you got them right...

As soon as you're done, you begin ripping through the loot in hopes of finding anything resembling a book. "Eh? Whatcha lookin' for 'Tori?" Loryana comes over. "I'm more or less full up, so I don't mind lookin' with ya."

"Notes. Anything to do with automata. Things like independant machines, that sort of thing."

Dust starts drifting down from the ceiling. "Princess..." Inatkan rumbles. You know that tone of voice. You don't have much longer. Frantically you scramble through the piles of loot. A crack in the wall startles you.

"Time's up," Dionaea mumbles, glancing around nervously. "We really need to go now."

It sucks, but she's right. "Hey, 'Tori! Are these paper doll thingies what you're looking for?" Loryana holds up a stack of notes. Shuffling through them quickly, finding them to be the research you're looking for! You gather them in your arms, slap them in the satchel and begin hurrying out the complex. You manage to make it out in time, catching your breath before looking at Inatkan. "So, did you get the stuff?" You ask, eyes glittering with excitement.

He sheepishly looks away. "Sorry, Princess..."

You'd admonish the servant, but a loud rumbling sounds the collapse of the cave complex. You sigh. Another adventure done, and you have something to show for it! You get up, dust yourself off, and start heading towards where you left your ride. As much as you'd like to pore over the notes right now, you've been away from the capital for several days now. You're sure your father is worrying about you...

A royal messenger is waiting at your horses, visibly relieved at your arrival. "Oh thank god..."

You arch an eyebrow. "What has my father been telling you?" You ask with an exasperated sigh. That man was always exaggerating the danger you'd be in, leaving the messengers scared for your life and theirs.

"Actually, it's about your father, Your Highness. Your Majesty? I'm not sure the protocol." He is clearly visibly shaken, taking a moment to compose himself. "Your father... passed away yesterday, the sickness finally catching up to him. You're needed in the capital at once." He looks around nervously. "Maria insists upon it."

Your father... He has been sickly for some time and you've made peace with the fact he could pass away, but still you feel a weight on your chest. Maria is trying to summon you? She's always been a meddlesome woman. Still, you had better hurry.

"'Tori... I don't know what to say," Dionaea begins hesitantly. "Let's just hurry home, okay?"

The towers that dot the skyline are a legacy of your now deceased and quite paranoid father. With the advent of airships, the natural borders of the Krakatogan moutain ranges were no longer as impressive. Nearly bankrupting the country, he set about setting up towers throughout the small kingdom, in hopes of forming a sort of anti-air defense against any aerial incursions.

They make natural resupply routes, and you change out mounts quickly as you rush to the capital.

It's a long ride but you get back to the capital, but you get there in the evening, making a show of your arrival to put the citizen's at ease.

Dionaea and Loryana excuse themselves after you get into town, though you notice Inatkan sticking closer. "You don't have to worry, you know." You say, a little impatient with his pampering. "I'm sure the watch is on high alert."

"You're right they are." A short, blue haired woman greets you with a small retinue of guards. "About time you got back," She says impatiently, more than a little agitated. "Your Majesty." It was almost an after thought.

"Hello, Maria." You greet her with little warmth or patience. Though this is a monarchy, you have an elected council. Maria is the head of that council, and she has been a thorn in your side for a long time. You suspect she was closer to your father than was proper. Still, paranoia would do you no good.

"We must arrange for my coronation at once, Councilor." You say dismissively, riding past her through the castle gates. After dismounting, you and Inatkan head into what is now your throne room.

"Of course we'll make arrangements... The Mercilian League is breathing down our necks. and we need to show a strong front." The Councillor says, running to catch up with more than a little annoyance.

Maria has been worrying about the League, your southern neighbors, for quite some time. The Centrarii Empire, to the north has remained peaceful and even amicable neighbors for at least a decade. Which is odd since they're currently on the warpath. Still a strong national front needs to be presented.

Large ceremony with foreign dignitaries. A lavish coronation is a show of force if anything. A private coronation would suggest a weak ruler wanting to hide her presence from potential adversaries.

And how about a proper funeral for our late father? (Though we're in the dark about the relationship of Astoria's relationship with ther father.)

Keep a grand ceremony, but do it quickly. Invite the nobles of our country.

We can do an international event some time in the future, after we've got our country in order.

Small fry. Nineteen years old. Rosslengo is in the ass corner of the world surrounded by monsters. When your ancestors attempted to take over the world, you were pushed back here by the good guys.

Hilariously, the lack of warfare, the fact your army does a good job keeping the monsters in check, and the advent of airships means tourism in Rosslengo is on the rise.

Only reason Mercilian League even cares about you at all is because they want to put the Centrarii Empire on the backfoot with a multiple front war.

"We'll need to do it quickly, Councilor. No time for a ball." You were worried about how the nobility would react. The noble families of Rosslengo were small in number, but they enjoy lavish spectacles. You're pretty sure they had more money than the crown... but your info was second hand at best. Your father did little to prepare you for the throne. You turn to Maria. "What neighbors do we need to be concerned with inviting? Naturally, the Empire will want to send a representative, and I'm hesitant to ruin our good relations with them over something as minor as this, but it would make it quite awkward for Vendica and the League."

Maria sighs. "Thank god you didn't suggest something large... I'm not sure our treasury could take it." You arch an eyebrow, clearly you need a more comprehensive report as to the status of the nation. The blue haired woman pushes up her glasses. "Unfortunately, the League will want to try and win you over to their cause as soon as possible. Not inviting them would be a mistake. As for Vendica... I suggest we ignore them entirely." She glances around. "I strongly advise you to not make the League angry. I honestly don't think we could fight them off."

You stop and turn to Maria. "Things are that bad? I know our army has been dwindling, but I didn't know we were so bad off we couldn't hold our own borders." You place a hand on your forehead, pinching your temple for a moment. "Wait, just compile an official report and hand it to me. I need the full picture." With a wave of your hand you dismiss her, "Let me think on this for the moment, Councillor."

With a look of impatience, she bows, "Of course. Your Majesty." The words are clearly uncomfortable on her tongue.

Finally you reach your room. Inatkan stops outside the door, as normal. It's been a busy day, and you need your rest.

>cont.
>>
When you wake up, you prepare for a moment before making for the Head Councillor's chambers as quickly as possible. You knock on the door and barge in. Maria looks up angrily before sighing. You wonder if she got any sleep at all last night.

"If you're wondering about the report... I managed to finish it. I'm just going over other information that may be relevant."

She hands you a stack of papers.

>TREASURY
You funds are low. Very low. Between your father's attempts to reinforce the infrastructure of the realm, the construction efforts have taxed the kingdom quite a bit. Your own insistence in the funding of the Royal Alchemist Society has further drained the treasury, with little economic return. Though the fruits of their research are quick interesting, and effective for national defense, you can't exactly sell the technology they create without risking national security quite a bit. Tourism on the rise has helped bolster your treasury, so you don't have to worry about money quite yet. Still, continuing at this pace of spending will bankrupt the throne.

>NOBILITY
There are two main houses, and about half a dozen of minor houses that support your rule. All of whom were happy with your father's policies of isolationism. They have little time for foreign affairs, and prefer to live in their own mansions in decadence. They are ancestors of the cultists and warlords who served the ancient dark emperor from your lineage. While some still hold to the old faiths, you don't have much to worry from them.

>POPULATION
Approximately 30% of the people like you. You're not exactly popular. You're seen as eccentric and distant. The Royal Alchemist Society is seen as a collection of lunatics, and your association with them reflects upon you. The fact you're often off on adventures makes them think you aren't concerned with running the country.
>>
Hmm... I realize it is quite surprising the late king hadn't arranged a marriage for her daughter. His paranoia catching up to him might be an explanation.
>>
>>28902001
The treasury seems like our immediate problem. We need to generate more income and cut nonessential expenditures.

We could promote tourism. This needs for international peace to hold, though. War is bad news four tourism.

We could steer the alchemic research towards civilian applications, something we could sell without endagering our security.

As for our security... we could delve into the past. We were an empire once. Perhaps we could re-discover what made our armies so mighty.

...

How close are they to transmuting shit into gold?

>MILITARY
You have two main legions, split among the capital, border towns, and various guard posts. To give an idea, the Centrarii Empire has at least forty active legions, as well as maybe a dozen reserve. The League has maybe twenty active legions with a handful of reserve. Your population can support the conscription of another legion, and if you're willing to accept a lasting damage to national infrastructure another legion could be mustered.

The good news is that their constant conflict with monstrous forces has left them very capable. They mostly operate in small skirmishing bands, and you're not too sure how they would handle in a pitched conflict.

Also, the Royal Alchemist Society has armed your people with technology far beyond those of other nations.

You have a non-existant airforce, possessing a small handful of scout ships.

----------

The realm was in worse state than you thought. You'll have your hands full.

What measures do you want to take?

Also, which nations do you want to invite to the coronation?
>>
>>28902073
Also, we could make a move that will certainly rile up the noble houses and start selling titles.
>>
>>28902095
For invitations, we should go as Maria suggested.
>>
>>28902095
We'll need to get the economy in order soon. What exactly can our country do for cash other than tourism? Cause right now all I can think of is to make more shit that for tourists.

The army is going to be constructs eventually.

I believe we're inviting the League and Contrarii.
What do the air forces of the other nations look like?
>>
>>28902114
Agreed.

What can we do considering our trade and tourism? If we can bring more money into the country, that'd be great. What are we known for exporting and importing, what can we do to improve the balance? I'm guessing we can put the towers on hold for a while, or at least slow their construction down enough for us to gain some more money.
>>
>>28902001
Well shit. We need to tell the alchemists to make better alcohol so we can sell it. Or something.

And promote tourism as >>28902073 said. BUT HOW...

"Tired of your normal life? Want to brag to your friends how you took down a ferocious creature that's tall as two men and wide as three? Come now to the Kingdom of Rosslengo to participate in a hunt with a group of experienced hunters"

Could work. Also since our army has been fighting in the mountains with all sorts of shit can we assume they're experienced and all that?
>>
>>28902095
What natural resources do we have?
Would a largescale industrial expansion be possible?
>>
>>28902095
Invite adventurers to raid monster lairs. Tax the treasure they bring back.
>>
>>28902197
>Attempting to tax adventurers
>Inviting foreigners to take Rosslengo wealth

What could go wrong...
>>
>>28902073
Now, this is going to sound silly, but hear me out.
We have alchemists, right? Can we make them research cosmetics and medicine we can export out? That'd also help with our tourism - healing spas and the like will cash in something fierce.
>>
>>28902095
Looking at the map, we are THE trade route between the Empire and the League. Tax merchants for the use of our road network.
>>
>>28902095
What is the extent of technology?

We've seen the standard fantasy weapons (Axe and sword), but also C4, a flashbang and then there's also airships. So yeah, what are the legions armed with?
>>
>>28902095
I think we should invite representatives from all our neighboring countries for our corronation.
>>
>>28902213
Ok: send army to clean monster nests. Everything they find goes to the treasury.
>>
>>28902095

Military can't be improved yet. We could launch a campaing to attract more tourists and incentivate commerce.

As for the coronation, invite everyone. When all neighboors can crush your army, we invite all of them and make friends or assure neutrality.
>>
>>28902215
That wouldn't be so bad, really.

I like the idea of having the RAS shift some focus to more civilian applications that we can sell.

I'd rather have them making crazy cool shit, but we do need to not go bankrupt. And not going bankrupt means more crazy cool shit overall.
>>
>>28902178

You have a ton of mountains, minerals are in abundance. Securing them and moving them, on the otherhand, is a little more problematic.

There is not a lot of wood. You only have one main river.

>>28902166

Most people have one main fleet. Airships are relatively new tech, and they are mostly used as transport.

>>28902234

You have very refined explosives tech. Guns haven't been theorized, but (out of character) they are making them too complicated.

Other than explosives, which other nations don't have, your main weaponized tech is a lightning cannon. You only have one in each fortress, since they take an absurd amount of power, require multiple experts to operate, and take up a huge amount of space.
>>
>>28902278
>You have very refined explosives tech.
We could use that for mining.

I want to say "MAKE A BIGASS BORE!", but those cost money.
>>
What the fuck are we doing for money now other than tourism?
>>
So it looks like the main consensus is to have the RAS work on paying back the crown for its investment?

Alrighty. Are there any other questions or suggestions?
>>
>>28902095

Try to bolster tourism.
Invite people from all over the world to see our majestic and beautiful flora and fauna.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HmRexWQhs3M
>>
What if we combine the ideas of taxing adventurers and monster hunt tourism into one package?

Instead of inviting adventurers, let's get tourists to hunt monsters and to raid monster lairs.

"Do you wish to feel the thrill of adventure? Fight monsters? Find treasures beyond your imagining? Then join in with the Royal Rosslengo Adventure Club! Scale deadly mountains, delve deep dungeons, fight fearsome foes! Only 299g this month!"
>>
Hmm, explosives are one use weapons. We could sell them to whichever country is at war right now. That is, as long as they are not easy enough to be reverse engineered.

If they can be reverse enginnered, then we should make an explosive that explodes when opened or tinkered with.
>>
>>28902335
Make sure we approach the subject tactfully.

We want them to continue with their important work, and we must regretfully request that they shift some efforts to less interesting work that can hep to fund the continuation of the more interesting work.

Don't just storm in there and start yelling about how bitches better get our money.
>>
>>28902348
>pay to almost die and not get the treasure!

Better not.

I feel the princess should be going to hunt the monster. The quest is named Adventure Princess Quest, after all.
>>
>>28902278
>a ton of mountains, minerals are in abundance
Maybe airborn transport would be something to look into?
We should probably get some factories going for largescale production of whatever technical stuff we'll make. Probably have the alchemists or angineers or whataver start working on creating an automaton soldier prototype. Or maybe just a sturdy exoskeleton.
>>
>>28902095
>Your population can support the conscription of another legion, and if you're willing to accept a lasting damage to national infrastructure another legion could be mustered.

Good thing we chose automata, eh? Eh?

Lets study the notes, make copies and then have Alchemists Guild or whatever organization we have that makes new inventions focus their research into this.
>>
>>28902327

Your primary exports are exotic materials that can only be found in your territory. Mostly luxurious stuff other nobles love.

You heavily tax imports.

That's seriously about it. The crown has very few exports. The nobility own a few vineyards due to the shitty soil quality, and one of the major houses is a breeder of exotic animals.
>>
>>28902335
Yes, RAS should look into turning their inventions to help mining operations.

Also, tourism
>>
>>28902367

How about asking them to research profitable thing? Like, mining equipment, refinery, fertilizers, or expand on the automaton idea?,
>>
>>28902409
What goods do the other nations like?

Preferably stuff that we could automate the manufacture of.
>>
>>28902409
Check if we're taxing imports TOO heavily. A drop in taxes will lead to increased imports and possibly a ne total of increased tax.
>>
>>28902418
I could get behind that. They don't have to "pay" us per say, but make things that we could use.
>>
>>28902278
Hmm. What about pulling back some soldiers from the capital and border towns to help secure supply routes from |Mines -> Capital|. Sadly I think explosive mining is kinda OOC thinking at the moment.
>>
>>28902418
>Fertilizers
I'm wary of it running into our nations only river.
>>
>>28902455
Not sure about that. Explosives seem to be a well reasearched subject, and people should have come up with innovative uses for them.
>>
>>28902440
Fiscal policy might help.
>>
>>28902428

Centrarii Empire has a massive and expanding warchest, and its people are little more than slaves. They have a robust industry from that labor.

The Mercilian League has a huge navy, and their merchant ships import a variety of goods from other continents which they then upsell the hell out of. On top of that, their primary export is lumber. Airships aren't quite up to snuff for oceanic travel yet.

Vendica has vast farmlands, the main reason they are the primary target of the Centrarii empire's efforts.
>>
>>28902409
Important question: is our kingdom in debt? Debt would complicate things.
>>
>>28902524

No, the former king was too paranoid to do that. You just don't have a ton of cash to throw around on massive national projects.

Anyway! I'll take these suggestions into account. We'll start making our first national policies next thread! I'm done for today. This went better than I hoped, thanks for playing.
>>
>>28902522
That doesn't answer my question at all. You mostly just said that Empire a shit, League is fantasy jews, and Vendica is middle of the US.

I still have no idea what kind of shit these people want to buy.
>>
>>28902573
Also, we should ask if our council has any ideas, especially the Exchequer.
>>
>>28902573
When is "next thread"? Tomorrow? In a week?
>>
You archiving this, OP? Cause I know I'm not.
>>
>>28902573
Thanks for running.
Hope we can take some time of to visit the former king's grave.
Seems a bit cold not to properly pay our respects to our father.
>>
>>28902591

You don't know. You can always ask their representatives at the coronation.

>>28902605

Tomorrow if everything goes well.
