"WAKE UP SIS WE'RE AT SHERBROOKE" you hear your brother squeal as you wake up in the seat next to him in your family car. Huh. You must have dozed off on the trip from Montreal. Groaning, you look bleary eyed out the window, but he still doesn't seem convinced that you're sufficiently not tortured. "WAKE UP EVIE"

You groan and slap him away. Ugh, little brothers. If you didn't know better from last year and the cyclical bitchiness, you'd say the all-girls academy ship you call home 9 months out of 12 was far better.

"I'm awake, snot" you groan "Are we at Sherbrooke yet?"

"Almost, kiddo" your dad says, taking his eyes off the road for the briefest second to lean back and ruffle your hair "Ah, my little girl's going to knock so many boys dead in her tank"

>You are Evelyn LeClerc, Sophomore Tankery Cadet at Sherbrooke Girls High School - a Canadian Academyship

"Speaking of which....The Tankery report's on!" your brother squeals with delight as your father turns up the radio, just enough for you to catch the last bit of news....

"...and I hear talk of a new school that’s just revived their team like Ooarai...Lafayette Girls Academy, they actually held a show match earlier with Robert Heinlein, very close match. They lost but it was really something to watch"
Your brother nudges you in the ribs "You could beat them, right Evie? These Lafayette Girls?"

"Of course. I mean, we're one of the premier tank schools in Canada. Nothing stops the Sherbrooke Fusiliers" You say proudly, trying not to beam too much in your school uniform.

"I couldn't be prouder of you, Eve" your father rouses you from your self-aggrandized mood "if only your mother had been around for this, she'd have been so proud to see a varsity tank cadet in the family"

"Dad just wants two perfect children in the family, since you actually have to work for it" your brother teases.

"Oh, like you and your face?" you retort. You look up just in time to see your father give you a stern glance through the rear vision mirror as you attempt not to smirk back. Then your phone goes off.....

Huh, an email. From faculty. Oh well, you can always read it later.

No sooner has that thought finished then you've pulled into the departures dock of Sherbrooke, where your school and life for the next few months, lies at anchor.

You unbutton yourself from the car and hop out as your father and brother do the same.

"Thomas, help your sister with her bags for her" your father instructs

>>
>Say Goodbye to Family

You go and grab your luggage. Thankfully, you left some of your more heavy stuff in your dorm over break - it’s mostly just clothes and other things you'll eventually need for the school year. Still, it’s a couple of bags worth since you'll be gone for close to 9 months.
"Goodbye, snot" you say, dropping your bags and hugging your brother in an impromptu fashion. "Try not to be more stupid while I'm gone" He merely scowls at you
"We're following you all the way til you depart, loser" he responds, not even moving his arms to hug you back. You grin sheepishly at him.
You, your brother and your father eventually make your way through the crammed parking lot to the departures dock, where you see a bunch of young girls in their neatly pressed Sherbrooke school uniforms waving tearful goodbyes to families and friends. Others seem to have already found their friendship groups and seem to be tittering on about whatever happened over the holidays.
"Well bye for now, Evelyn" Your father says, hugging you tight "Try and ring once a week, okay?"
"Okay Dad" you nod. Your brother musters a barely registerable grunt as a bye. Oh well, it could have been worse…he could have sworn at you as a goodbye.
‘Bye, snot’ You say, throwing your arms around him and snickering at his awkwardness.
"HMCS SHERBROOKE WILL BE DEPARTING IN 15 MINUTES" the PA system at the docks booms out, and you stow your luggage quickly before trying to get a good seat on the bus over to the loading platform and ultimately, the ship. You have time to do just one more thing before you depart onto the boat for the next 9 months:

Pulling out your phone, you switch to your email app to have a look at why you would get an email from faculty on the first day back. Actually, you’re kinda dreading it with that heart sick feeling of dread you feel whenever something big happens.

That feeling drops even further when you see who it’s from: Headmistress Charlotte DeGaul

>Miss LeClerc, I trust you are well as you return to Sherbrooke today.

>I emailed you because of your potential and progress last year through the school. I will need to see you as soon as possible in my office at the top floor of the command tower.

>Rest assured Miss LeClerc, this is not a bad visit. You are not in trouble so to speak. We just have a lot to discuss

>Dr Charlotte DeGaul, Headmistress

You blink. What?!

DeGaul wants to see you? But you’re nothing special. You’re a Tankery cadet, and a new one at that….

You’re….

You’re….

You're on the Freshmen Bus. Fuck

Cursing yourself inwardly, you try distracting yourself by looking for your family out of the window, but to no avail.

"Hey" an excitable freshman behind you says, looking at the shoulder pips on your uniform "You're a Tankery Cadet! I thought freshmen weren't accepted into the varsity program!"

"Evelyn LeClerc. And it's a lot of hard work and effort, especially at the start"

"I know. Not sure if I can handle the added pressure, to be honest. I got here on a shooting scholarship"

"You shoot?"

"Yeah, 1st place at the All-Girls Moose Hunting Championship in Okanagan"

You whistle softly. That's a pretty prestigious competition to win, especially at 14. Arcadia somehow notices

"What?"

"It's just.....that's a pretty big competition to win at your age"

"Yeah, and now I'm on an academyship with everyone telling me it's going to be hard. I'll see how I go getting into tankery though. Thanks, Evelyn"

You nod at her as a polite thank you and resume your looking out the window as your phone goes off:

You lift your phone up and slide the 'call receive' bar

"Sup, Holmes?"

"Mrs Watson, I presume?" You both giggle. Marie Bouchard has been your bestest friend for years. Short, blonde and bookish, the two of you couldn’t look any different. But you've always subscribed to the old theory that a best friend is one soul trapped in two bodies, and that couldn’t be truer of the two of you – you just have fun together.

"So, you moved in to your new place yet?" You ask

"Yeah, it’s sweet! 4 bedroom sophomore dorm. Haven't met my roommates, though. You should swing by when you get here. Remember - my dorm is now the floor above yours.”

"Awesome. I think I will. Unfortunately, I’m stuck on the freshman bus" Marie seems to laugh hard at that

"Oh well, I'll send out a search party in a week."

"Yeah, taber nac to you too, bitch"

"Evie, pls" Marie says with mock hurt before laughing "I'll catch you later okay?"

"Ciao, Bella" You say smugly to Marie

"That's not even French" you hear her grumble as she hangs up

As you hang up, you realize you missed a call. Flicking through, you try calling back before they call you

"Evelyn LeClerc"

"There you are!" Alexandra 'Sandra' Sydney exclaims into the phone. A somewhat friend, and somewhat high strung about punctuality, she's also a senior and captain of the Tankery team, leading the Varsity Aces team known as the Five Ringed Legends. "Did you make it on the ship yet?"

"Kinda" You frown, looking around "I'm on the Freshman Bus"

"Mhm. Great. Okay" Sandra says, not sounding as if she processed it fully "Did you read the email faculty sent you?"

"Yeah, It's from DeGaul" You say and your heart sinks as you say it. Goddammit, you were trying to forget about that. What happened? Your inner voice starts swearing profusely as numerous possibilities, all of them bad, array themselves. DeGaul was talking to you about your progress in the school. That’s never good news

Maybe you've been replaced on the Tankery team

Maybe you got found out that you were the one that gave the senior president a bruise the size of Nova Scotia on her arm in dodgeball last year

Maybe Professor Kimler found out about that prank you pulled last year

Maybe your GPA dropped below the norm

Maybe...

Maybe....

FFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUU

"Why what happened?" You ask nervously, only cringing outwardly slightly as you ask it, bracing for the impact of what happens next.

"Wow, look at Miss guilty conscience. No, DeGaul and I just agreed it might be a good idea to get together a Junior Varsity team, with you as the commander"

……..

……..

Huh. Well that wasn't what you expected

"A Junior Varsity Tankery team?"

"Yep"

"Sandra, this isn't Hockey"

"Yeah, I know. What do you think?"

'Uhhhhhhhhhhh....'

Your words falter you a bit. You must admit, you never really braced yourself for this kind of impact. You thought it would be much worse.

'Why me, Sandra?' you finally say, more as a way to stall for time to collect your thoughts than anything else

'Well you're younger than us so a Junior Varsity team would suit you better' Sandra says, counting off the reasons 'you're smart, good at Tankery, on the tankery team already, and a couple other reasons that we can sort out once you get to DeGaul's office'

'Yeah but you could have picked any of last year’s sophomore cadets...'

'Oh yes, but they didn't show as much promise as you, Evelyn, and trust me, we think you showed the most promise'

'Really?' Damn, you must have done something right

'Yeah' Sandra seems to hesitate for a moment 'Look, Evelyn, can you.....just....come to DeGaul's office at the first opportunity, okay? We'll all want to talk to you about this'

Then she hangs up leaving you in the lurch a bit.

You manage to lose yourself in your thoughts until the rest of the bus trip, until you arrive at the designated drop off point for all the freshmen - Lake Jourdan Park.

What do you want to do now?

Well, Sandra did say to come see her and the Headmistress as soon as possible, so you hike off in the direction of the command tower, confident that your baggage will be delivered to your dorm despite your confusions.

You bump into a few faces you met briefly from last year - classroom buddies and people you worked on projects with last year, but they all seem to be busy or in the process of moving and settling back into academy ship life.

You make your way to the imposing super-structure of the command tower - the tallest building on the academy ship. You've never been summoned inside before, but you can guess from the outside it’s got more than ten floors in it, and Degaul's office is typified by the one with a full 360 degree viewing arc around it at the very top of the structure

You walk through the command structure, saying hello politely to the naval studies students working within to make sure the ship moves smoothly and efficiently before coming to the visitors desk and signing yourself in.

And then there's the elevator ride up....a fairly tedious few minutes by your estimation, with some of the most BORING music you've ever listened too.

[1/2]
>>
[2/2]

As you step out of the elevator, you notice five people in the room - Sandra Sydney, her 2IC Mary Valpy, Joan Radley and Megan Walters - all four members of the Schools top Tankery Team 'The Five Ringed Legends'.

The fifth has her back to you, but you know who it is - Charlotte DeGaul - Headmistress of Sherbrooke Girls High School. She stands in a traditional military 'at ease' position, staring out the window pensively for the briefest of moments before turning on her heel and looking at you.

'Ah Evelyn' She says with polite measured tone before motioning to a seat in front of her desk. The Aces all cross their arms on either side of the room, leaning against the various pieces of furniture 'Please, take a seat'

‘You wanted to see me?’ You ask

'Indeed I did' DeGaul says never once losing eye contact with you 'Miss LeClerc, we have a lot to discuss. Please, take a seat'

‘Can I remain standing?’ you ask before tacking on a ‘Ma’am’ at the end hurriedly, just remembering your manners.

'Very well then.’ DeGaul says before beginning ‘Sherbrooke was founded back after World War 2 under the ideals of teaching the young girls of Canada and Quebec the skills needed to be women in the world that was quickly evolving around them'. You resist the urge to roll your eyes, this was all part of the induction package you read when you were first accepted 18 months ago.

'Part of the curricular in that time, due to the increasing reality of the Cold War, was to train our students in tankery so as to fulfill the goal of teaching skills for the real world around our students to our students'

'Much like all of you in this room, I was once a Tankery cadet at this school, and this school has a proud and unbroken history of tankery dating back to the schools inception' DeGaul pauses drawing in a deep breath 'that....tradition....is about to be thrown out the window thanks to a particularly unsavory incident last year'

'Why, what happened?'

Degaul takes a deep breath in as you do a scan of the other four faces in the room - they're a mixture of angry and on the verge of tears. Whatever this is, it’s obviously messed up.

'You remember our match against Rob Ford Remedial College?'

You try and hold down a brief laugh, being aware of where you are at the moment.

Ah, Rob Ford Remedial College.

Known amongst Canada as The period Worst period School period Ever period, RFRC was filled with users and abusers from the harsher walks of life, and its Tankery team was no different. You remember they got disqualified for 5 games last year for throwing Molotov cocktails at an opposing teams ammo rack. That was after the drunk driver incident who drove an M5 Stuart ONTO an IS as part of a televised match to go for the kill. Then there was the interview afterwards where they almost publicly forfeited a match saying ‘We don’t need any more pussies to eat, we’ve got enough at home’.

'I think so' you respond after trying not to chuckle some more at those antics 'Before my time, wasn't it?'

'Yes' DeGaul nods 'Well unfortunately it has come to light of late that our match had an incident in it which seems to have done more than marred our entire season - a shot that was fired off by these four lovely ladies put a student into a seizure at the end of the match that forced him to be hospitalized. He was put into a coma last week'

The silence is kind of defeaning as DeGaul's words sink in. Behind you, one of the girls starts sobbing uncontrollably.

'The school is being sued by the kids parents, Rob Ford Remedial is also trying to take us to the cleaners, and to make matters even worse, the ITA have stepped in and suspended all of our students and tanks involved in the match until an official investigation can be carried out that clears us of any wrongdoing'

'Evelyn, you're our most promising tanker who wasn't involved in that incident, and that's why we chose you to do this. Please, please don't let this school down and forfeit this season of Tankery. The Tradition must be maintained.'

“Well I can give you the contact details for both” DeGaul says, giving you time to write down the contact details for both.

"WHERE WERE YOU?" Marie almost shouts into the phone. 'Surely you weren't stuck on the bus for this long AND out of cellphone range?'

You blink. Huh, DeGauls office has no cell reception. Guess it makes sense with her not wanting students playing on their phones while waiting on their suspensions.

'I had a meeting with DeGaul' you sigh, and then the line goes quiet on the other end.

'Hello?'

'What did you do?' Marie's voice goes all playful and coy on the other end.

'Nothing, I-' you stammer.

'Tell me.'

“Fine,” you say as you walk out the front door “it's really something that I should tell you in person. Y'know, prying eyes and ears and all that.”

“Oooooh scandalous,” Marie giggles “Did you get caught sleeping with a professor again?”

“What do you mean again, you bitch?” You ask as Marie proceeds to sound as she fell off her bed with laughter.

The laughter dies down after a full minute.

“Sorry, Evie that one was just too good to pass up.”

“Like your mother?”

“Hey, I am marked proof my mother is not a lesbian you-“ Marie pauses and you can hear French being spoken both back and forth in the background before a crackle, as if the phone had just been picked up again. Marie goes back to talking to you.

“Sure. Timmies, right?”

"Do I look American to you? Of course Timmies!”

You change course immediately so that instead of going to Marie's dorm you are going straight for the Tim Horton's a few blocks away from Marie's dorm.

It’s not a bad walk, or a long one for that matter, but you begin to feel more and more hungry the closer you get to the most Canadian of coffee shops.

You enter the store to a huge, sweeping line that almost leaves you standing outside, and then you notice the signage.

ROLL UP THE RIM IS ON AWWWWWW YISSSSSSS.

You also notice Marie at one of the tables near the back of the line, suspiciously without coffee. More suspiciously, at least to you, she's sitting with a girl you've never seen before who's about your height, with dark almost-black hair that would look kinda like a shoulder length helmet were it not for the fringe brushed to either side of her face.

“Evelyn,” Marie says, sliding over to make room for you “this is my roommate; Haley Laviolette.”

Haley smiles warmly and offers her hand for you to shake “Hello, how do you do?”

“Great,” you smile back “should we get our coffee?”

“Yeah but the lines really long,” Marie says, and Haley nods in agreeance. “what should we do to pass the time?”

“So Haley,” You say as the line shuffles forward bit by bit “what do you do?”

“Well I just moved here from France,” Haley says “my father got a job as a software developer in Montreal. I’m studying to follow in his footsteps.”

“Wait, you’re a computer geek?”

“Oui, I put a few Easter eggs in my father’s games for him the last few years.”

“Uhhh, who does your father work for?” Marie asks.

“Ubisoft Montreal” Haley says in a very thick French accent. Holy shit, you didn’t notice how thick it was until she said that. You look down at Marie, whose eyes have gone wider than dinner plates. You blink and she’s grabbing Haley by her shirt collars. Well, that was sudden.

“OHMYGODGIVEMEALLTHEASSASSINCREEDGAMESEVER” Marie says excitedly as Haley stares at her in dumbfounded shock. Marie eventually composes herself “I mean, sorry….I just *really* like AssCreed.”

“Oui, that is okay,” Haley says smiling very warmly “I like them too.”

Haley turns back to you “I’d also like to do something that gets me away from a computer screen. At my old school we had a Tankery program. Which I found very interesting, but I don’t know….”

“Really, you’re into Tankery?”

“Oui, my old school used to use a number of captured English Crusader tanks. They move so fast, it was so fun to watch.”

'I'm partial to Grizzly's myself," Marie chimes in "they're what the school uses, aren't they Evelyn?"

You hold back the urge to recruit both of them on the spot. No, both her and Marie don’t know anything yet. And this line is still taking too long for your grumbling tummy. Goddammit.

“Yes, Marie,” you say “Sherbrooke does use Grizzlies, or at least they did last time I checked.”

Actually, you think, you should get onto that. All of last year was learning the Canadian-made Sherman ‘Grizzly’ tank. After the news today, you might be thrown well outside your comfort zone.

“Haley, the Crusaders, you said they were captured,” You say, getting a bright spark.

“How?”

“It’s kind of a custom amongst the European Academies for the loser to offer a tank to the victor” Haley replies, shrugging “I think it has something to do with knights losing their sword after a duel”

“It does” Marie nods

You nod as well, slowly. Hmmm, maybe that’s a possible lead for later, but you need an extra pair of hands or two before you can go and find tanks. And you’re not entirely sure what you’re looking for either, come to think of it.

“So, when are you going to tell me what all the fuss is about?” Marie says, looking you dead in the eyes and snapping you out of your thoughts.

Haley smiles warmly again “Thank you, Evelyn.”

You finally get to the head of the line and order your drinks. You order a Chai Latte, Haley orders a Cappuccino and Marie orders a Tall Black with two sugars. Funnily enough, your phone goes off as you order. Not sure whether it was a text or an email but it certainly wasn't a call – it only vibrated once.

You find your way to a nearby table and sit down, making sure you are dead serious and have the girls full attention before you begin.

“And well…” You turn to Marie “…you remember our match against Rob Ford Remedial?”

“Do I ever, that shit was funny as fuck,” Marie says before covering her mouth “excuse my French, Haley.”

“I believe that was English, Marie,” Haley smirks “and it is completely fine.”

“Well it seems our team put a kid in a coma in that match,” you say, letting it hang in the air “at least according to the ITA.”

…….

…….

Wow, this is a really long time for it to hang in the air.

“Please say something…” you say meekly.

“Jesus H Christ, Evie. That’s messed up” Marie finally says.

“Hey I wasn't the one that shot them!”

“Oh I know it wasn't you, but still….”

You put your head in your hands, resting your elbows on the tables. “Well anyway, DeGauls getting me to put a different Tankery team together while the ITA investigates Varsity. I was only a cadet a week or two after that match so I’m not implicated at all.”

Actually now that you think about it…..that was maybe a little too coincidental……

You look at both Marie and Haley, and for the strangest reason, both of them have very thoughtful expressions on their faces.

“Put a new team together, you say?” Marie finally asks.

“Yeah, I could actually do with an extra set of-”
“I’m in” Marie says suddenly.

“Oui, me too” Haley laughs “I always wanted to do Tankery, this seems like so much fun.”

“-Hands” you finish “Seriously? I mean, are you sure?”

They both nod emphatically.

“Well okay, but we’ll need another 4 crews, and probably an extra person for our crew.” You grin nervously “Oh, and enough tanks for those 5 crews.”

“Got any ideas where you’re going to start looking?” Marie asks.

“Marshall Jourdan Park for a Tank? I dunno. And I have no idea where to find crews. Hell, we’re probably pretty screwed if we can’t get an Ace Team since everyone else already has one.”

Marie thinks for a minute “Well,” she says, tapping a finger against her chin “We could always try Student Records to see whether we could find some students who have prior experience? Or we could always chat to the JROTC girls to see whether they’d be interested in joining. Or we could just walk around and see what we find – Tanks or People.”

“Oui, and I might have a friend who could be our fourth crew member” Haley says “She’s Australian, and just transferred here, like me.”

“JROTC,” You say, snapping your fingers and moving to go “Let’s see whether we can get the military girls on side for this venture.”

Both Marie and Haley nod and follow you, throwing their coffees in the trash as they walk out. The walk doesn’t take long – the compound for JROTC being not that far from the Tim Horton’s.

You take in the sights and the sounds as you go through the streets. Marie and Haley follow behind, looking at everyone with increasing attention.

“Wow, no-one knows about this Tankery thing, do they?” Marie remarks as a group of tittering freshmen pass by in front of you in the street
.
“Well, no, apart from you two, me, DeGaul and the Five Ringed Legends” you reply as the compound gets into sight – a bunch of pre-fabricated buildings surrounded by a chain linked fence topped with barbed wire. Today it seems, the girls are being drilled by the head cadet Warrant Officer Olivia Tweedale.

As you approach the gate, a bored looking girl in army fatigues stops you, placing a hand out in front of your chest to block your path.

“State your name and business, please”

“Hi, I’m Evelyn LeClerc, and this is Marie Bouchard and Haley Laviolette. We’re just hoping to talk to your warrant officer about Tankery….” You stutter as you notice Tweedale turn on her heel and walk over towards you. God she can be imposing in person and up close “…if that’s alright?”

“Corporal Degnan?” Olivia’s voice booms out as soon as she approaches you, causing the cadet sentry to flinch just a tiny amount.

“Yes, Ma’am?” Degnan bucks up, standing at attention immediately.

“Ma’am?” Olivia’s voice starts to crack before she asks again, actually going louder “Ma’am!? I am a warrant officer, corporal, I am enlisted, not an officer. You will address me by my rank!”

“Yes, warrant officer. Sorry, warrant officer” Degnan apologizes profusely.

“Now, as for you lot...” Olivia grimaces, and you brace yourself for the tirade that’s about to come before she motions to a building to her right “…follow me into my office, would you kindly?”

The office of the warrant officer seems to be spacious, but spartan. You get the feeling Tweedale might have done something like this for longer than she’s been at the school everything is so neat and organized. Tweedale sits in the chair behind her desk and motions for the three of you to also sit down, resting her hands behind her head and sighing contentedly.

“So, I heard you mention Tankery. What can I do for you?”

>We’re looking for crews
>Do you know where we can find tanks?

“Well, do you know where some Tanks would be hiding out?” You ask. Tweedale nods.

“As part of the program we have to do history of this place. Military stuff, mostly. We found out a while back that there was a prototype Canadian tank hidden in the hold somewhere. One of the storage sheds, if I recall correctly. Only a couple of its kind ever made.”

“Ummm, Okay. Thanks Olivia”

“We’re actually looking if you could send some of the JROTC girls our way as well,” Marie say politely “It’d be great to have a military influence on the new Tankery team.”

Olivia gets up and stares out the window, her hands clasped behind her back. You look past her and see a bunch of cadets, led by one of Olivia’s sergeants, doing parade work.

“No” Olivia finally says quietly.

…..

……

Oh.

“Okay well, thanks for talking to us” You say, making for the door.

“Hold on just one second” Olivia says, turning and looking at you, her eyes going very small as she appraises all three of you in the room “That wasn’t a no way in hell, so maybe we could work something out….”

“I could send the dropkicks like Degnan to you, but they’re needed here to get better. Sending them to you could be a release valve, and I can’t have that. Not right now….” Olivia’s jaw hardens “But, I can strike you a deal; your new crews are going to be out of shape. That impedes the quick thinking needed to be a proper tankery cadet. So my proposal is this: the start of every practice, your Tankery team and my JROTC girls, half an hour of PT. What do you say?”

“Alright, you’re on” You shake hands with Olivia.

“Good. Now rest assured, I will run you absolutely ragged, much like my cadets,” Olivia says “but you’ve got two upsides to this deal: You may use our facilities at any time to train.”

You nod “Thanks Olivia.”

“I’m not finished. I’ll also send any interested parties from my girls your way.” She holds a finger up warningly in front of you “but don’t expect anything immediately.”

You nod, and shake her hand again before she screams out in a unhealthy volume “ERMEY!?”
A young dark haired girl appears at the door immediately in her fatigues and snaps to attention.

“Please escort our guests off the premises, would you kindly?” Olivia says, and Ermey beckons for you to follow.

You follow Ermey through the hallways and out the gate, watching as a number of cadets get yelled at by Tweedale for puking after stopping their jumping jacks routine.

Ah the Army, you’re not quite sure you could ever put up with it…..

As you exit the gate you see a girl on the other side of the road. She’s skinny, average height with close cropped mousy brown hair that’s cut into very short curls underneath one of the weirdest hats you’ve seen. It looks like an oversized fedora, but with one side pinned up next to it with a rising sun badge.

The girl approaches you and sticks out her hand. “Evelyn LeClerc I guess? Pleased ta meet ya.”

You continue walking for a while, heading for Marshall Jourdan Park. Maybe there’ll be a tank there, or people willing to look, at least.

About 5 blocks out from the park, you duck down a side street, and continue walking until you hear a clatter of cans up and trash bins ahead of you. Huh. You thought this part of the school wasn’t really inhabited, but then as you approach you see what’s causing all the noise.

It’s not a person.

It’s a dog.

A very large dog.

Actually it’s more of a horse than a dog, holy shit.

It turns and notices you, and begins walking towards you, its mouth open.

“What do we do?” Marie almost squeals besides you

“Shhhhhh, maybe he hasn’t noticed us yet,” You whisper out the side of your mouth, standing stock still. “If Jurassic park taught me anything, it’s that if we stay still, he’ll just run past us.”

“I’m pretty sure that’s not how it works” Marie says next to you, doing the same thing.

“Guys, I am Australian, and what is this?” Alexis says behind you, her eyes going wide.

The dog approaches slowly, and then quickly picks up pace, going into a loping canter as it closes with you.

“Evie…” Marie says next to you.

“It’ll be fine” You try and reassure her.

“Evie….” The dog lopes closer, its tongue lolling out.

And then it leaps and crashes into you with its front paws, easily knocking you on your ass and pinning you to the ground.

Then it begins licking you….

“No STOP, stop…HAHAHAHAHAGETOFFAMEYOUBIGLUMPHAHAHAHAHA” you protest, trying to get this big lump of a dog off of you.

Fortunately, it’s Alexis who comes to save you, wrestling it off. Somehow, the dog likes this and rolls over onto its back, its legs kicking up in the air as it expects a tummy rub.

“Oh hey, just wants a pat” She says, and begins rubbing the dog, who barks in delight “Oh wait, he’s got a collar.”

Well, that’s something.

“What’s it say?” Haley asks, finally getting over her shock as Marie also comes over and helps you to your feet.

“Kirk” Alexis says “How weird….”

“Well, we’d better make it to Jourdan Park if we want to find a tank before dark” You say, dusting yourself off “Who knows? Maybe we’ll find two”

“Alright, let’s bring the dog with” You say, and then beckon for it to follow as you walk off. You check your watch WOW 5PM.

Your tummy grumbles. Hmmmm, might have to start thinking about dinners for everyone soon.
Marie spends the rest of the trip making god awful doge jokes at your expense, and you chuckle at how bad they truly are.

“Wow such Evelyn. Much Tanks.” Marie says, grinning at her own jokes. “Many amaze”

“You know, you’re short enough that I could make you ride the dog” you respond as you see the outskirts of the park and a number of students still at play in it.

“Hey fuck you, I’m not short. I’m vertically challenged” Maries responds, pouting.

“Whatever you say, Smurfette” you respond, grinning and rubbing it in a bit.

Your phone goes off again and you realize you should probably check it at some point.

You make your way into the center of the park and then look around you. Jourdan Park was meant to be the Central Park of Sherbrooke, and it’s huge. You’re really not sure you’ll be able to do everything here in the time you have. In fact, you soon realize you’ll have to come back for at least one more whole day to properly scope out the place.

“Okay so what do we do now?” Alexis asks “We have two hours before proper sundown.”

“Let’s find some giant pieces of metal,” You grin “it is what we came here for, after all”

“Fine, but we get the dog” Alexis says, Kirk barks his appreciation.

“Alright, cool. You, Haley and Kirk can sweep the northern side. Stay in cell contact in case something happens. Me and Marie will sweep southern side. See you back here in…an hour?”

Haley and Alexis both nod and run off, the barking horse behind them. “See ya”

Which leaves you and Marie. Awesome. You kind of just wanted some time with your bestest friend.

“Let’s look for those tanks!” you say, clapping Marie on the back

“But my legs are sore. Being short means much more steps than you, which means being tired more easily.”

“Oh?,” You ask “What if I carried you?”

“Lead on, oh great one” Marie says, jumping onto your soldiers and then thinks “Actually, this’ll make it better to spot Tanks.”

“It does,” You nod “the added elevation means we can spot a little further.”

“Evie” Marie says after a bit of a walk ‘Can you Eagle me, like you used to do last year?”

“That could be a bit dangerous” you caution.

“Nah”

“Okay”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R9movnpS4s4

After 5 minutes of spinning you drop Marie, who bangs her head on the ground about ten metres from you.

“Totally worth it!” she says, sitting up and laughing.

“Whoah… what the fuck?” you hear her say after a couple seconds “Evie, I think I found something!”

You scamper over, and its unmistakably a tank. If only a small one.

“Hello?” you say into your phone

“Ah, Evelyn” DeGaul says back in her proper chipped tones. “I forgot to mention a couple things before you left.”

“If you find a tank, please feel free to call either me or Samantha Seaman, I’ll email you her number” Degaul says “Ms Seaman is assisting us on moving and constructing these tanks with her crew of Naval Studies students for extra credit.”

“Secondly, we actually have a Tank store on Sherbrooke, believe it or not. Mr Coape’s. I would suggest going to visit him at the earliest opportunity. He can fix up your tanks with a whole myriad of gadgets and the link. Remarkable man.”

“Further, and this shouldn’t bear repeating; I’ve just been advised by the school board that the reason of our little chat should be kept on the hush until I have been advised otherwise. I know you might have told some close friends by now such as Miss Bouchard, but I don’t want this spreading further.”

“Okay” you nod, as Marie hangs up and tells you that you both have to go now “I’ll keep all those in mind, Ms DeGaul.”

“I have no doubt you will, Miss LeClerc. Remember, we all have a lot riding on this.”

She then hangs up.

Okay, so I don't know much technical info on tanks, what engine would you need to stick in a 'tilda to get it above a brisk jogging pace?
>>
>>28912789

>>
>>28912789

>>
>>28912813
Obviously. I'm just thinking hypothetically here.
I'm hoping after one of the current GuP quests ends, someone'll do one with the cast doing Unlimited, and I'm trying to get ideas jotted down.
>>28912830
Isn't it's big problem just having a really crappy hp/weight ratio? I mean, if you could improve that, couldn't you technically increase the top speed? According to Wikipedia it actually weighs about 3 tons less than a Sentinel, so would a Meteor let you get a Matilda going fast? Or would it not fit? Or do I have a completely oversimplified understanding of the factors that determine a vehicle's top speed?
>>
>>28912789
It's impossible

The Matilda is actually a rather poor tank against late-war tanks. The 2-pdr is poor, the engine is literally a couple of bus engines stuck onto the same crank shaft, and the suspension is the same as a churchill's. It's got okay armour for its size and year, but nothing special when faced against any gun that's high velocity and a larger calibre than 75mm. German 88s, Brit 17-pdrs, Russian 76mm, all of those would just punch through them.

It was also impossible to upgrade. The turret ring is too small for anything but the 2-pdr, or a 3-inch howitzer. You can't change the suspension without major changes to the entire tank, same with the engine. Honestly, our upgrading opportunities for the Matilda are 'stick a littlejohn on it' and that's it.

the fuck did you do to your twitter OP, I was wondering why you hadn't posted a link to the thread there and it says your account is suspended
>>
>>28912941
You have an oversimplified understanding of what determines a vehicle's top speed.

There's the engine, and then there's the transmission, and then there's the suspension. Putting in a high horsepower engine will do nothing if the transmission can't handle it. Having a high hp engine and transmission won't help if the tracks will break at higher speed than they were designed for, or the roadwheels themselves can't physically turn that fast. And you can't change the suspension without changing the way the suspension is mounted to the hull.
The Matilda is a dead end in its own development.

Putting a meteor in a Sentinel, while probably possible to do, isn't legal.

Highest hp engine that's legal is a 450hp inline engine from a hawker... something. One of the biplanes.

Putting that in a Sentinel (assuming the changed engine keeps the weight at 30 tonnes) will give it a ratio of about 15 hp/ton, which is adequate. It's not underpowered by any means.

You eventually get your food. You ordered a quarter pounder, Marie orders 4 cheap cheeseburgers, Haley orders a salad and Alexis spends half an hour arguing with the cashier – a stunned freshman who looks as if she doesn’t know what the hell is going on.

“No, look, I just want something with Beetroot on it!” She says, clearly frustrated.

“I’m sorry we don’t have beetroot on anything” the freshman says

I don't think we're able to put much else in it. It's set up as two straight-six flathead engines bolted to a central transmission, as near as I can tell. The engines in the "fast" tanks of WW2 tended to be aircraft radial engines, or OHV V-8 or V-12 engines, which were also typically adapted from aircraft engines. The Soviets had a thing for bolting fucking massive diesels into their tanks, which worked, but contributed to the horrible reputation (amongst the crewmembers) of T-34s.

>Talk to Alexis

“So Alexis, what’s your story?” you ask, finally finishing your meal.

“Oh, I was born and raised in Australia Came here when my family moved. Dad got sent to a military base up here and mum and dad wanted me to be closer to home, since my old academyship doesn't sail up here.”

“What ships that?” Marie asks, eating another cheeseburger.

“John Monash Military College” Alexis responds “I’m a 5 generation army brat. Monash tends to sail around the Pacific and Indian oceans; it doesn't come this far north.”

You nod. You've never really heard of the school apart from their Tankery program, which ranks highly in the Pacific area.

Actually, you’re not even sure what they field….

“And what’s with the hat?” Marie asks.

“It’s my grandfather’s slouch hat” Alexis smiles, touching the rising sun badge fondly “He wore it the entire way through Tobruk. I’d like to think a lot of the luck he had from there tends to rub off on me whenever I wear it.”

“As good a reason as any I suppose” Haley says

“Yeah” you smile “Welcome to the team”

“So Haley,” you say, swinging around to face the tall Frenchwoman “we know a bit of your story, but you haven’t told us what your old school was.”

“Or how you met Alexis” Marie chimes in.

“Or that” You agree.

“Well the story of meeting Alexis is fairly facile: we simply had a class together over summer with all the transfers.”

“Oh that’s pretty cool.” You say. “Transferring must be real hard.”

“Oui, especially from a college as le prestige as St Joan Of Arc Battle Maiden College.”

“Wait, a French Military College, just for girls?” Marie says next to you, about to eat another cheeseburger, as you slap it out of her hands. She glares at you in response.

“Oui”

“Well I hope we don’t face them at Tankery,” You respond “they sound tough….”

Haley nods “They are, but I have faith you will carry us to victory this year, Evelyn”

You see a slight blush rise to your cheeks. Oh, stop it you.

“What tanks do you think we’ll find tomorrow?” You ask them all, as a way to change the subject.

“I’m hoping for a Sentinel” Alexis says, and then as if to counter everyone’s confused looks mumbles “It’s a kind of Australian tank.”

“What about you, Haley?” You ask

“I’m not big on Tank knowledge,” Haley responds “But I would like to see a Crusader before this is done”

“Well I’m full” Marie says, finally finishing her last cheeseburger “What should we do now?”

“I still haven’t unpacked, can we head to yours?” You say, nudging Marie. She groans loudly.

“Not the belly” Marie says.

“Well, you did eat five cheeseburgers” you admonish. “You’ll get fat”

“They were delicious.” Maries says, groaning more as she makes to get up “And so many of them.”

“Whatever, Jabba the Hutt.”

“Ugh.”

You finally make your way back to Marie and Haleys, and Alexis joins in as well, tagging along.

“Huh, I live just up the hall” she says absent mindedly. “Hold on one sec…”

She comes back with a weird looking pillow.
“It’s my boomerang pillow” she says, and throws it at you.

OHMYGODSOCOMFY.

You fall asleep to Marie managing to flick on Crimson Skies, your eyelids hitting your face with the force of a thousand suns.

“Somuchtodotomorrow” you mumble as you fall asleep.

“We’ll get to it then, though.” Marie says, as Haley and Alexis nod “Tankery Captain LeClerc.”

>END DAY

Actually, hasn't our phone been buzzing all day? We need to check it.

Okay that's it for today everyone.

I'll be back at 11pm GMT tomorrow for day 2. Where we might get some tanks, might get some crews, or might just generally fuck round.

Twitter's not up yet, but try and follow @CanadianIron regardless.

Thanks for running today, Iron.
I really liked it. Make sure to archive it.
>>
>>28914460
FUCK

Anyway, feedback time?

I liked it, but at the same time, this is fucking similar to LGA and I dunno how to feel about that. Since you're in the sameuniverse as Schteel and the same timeframe too, it seems, you'll probably want to coordinate with Schteel so you don't fuck up his canon.

God help us if Lefayette and Sherbrooke has to face each other at some point. Fuck.
>>
>>28914472
thanks, for today.

we're starting out way less then what trude started with, hope this changes.

will we see any inter-war tanks?

also will you do a pastebin shop
>>
>>28914582
well so far trude has a head start considering she started much earlier on her tank program not to mention she has a much smaller budget
>>
>>28914472
went well for a first run

and i'm hoping that we don't immediately jump into the ITL and go all WIN OE WE ALL DIE modo

It would be nice to just focus on building a good team with a good lineup and play friendly matches and exhibition matches without impending doom looming over us, we've got more than enough of that in the other 1 1/2 GuP quests
>>
>>28914472
So far so good. Do try and coordinate with Schteel, though, I like both quests, and I'd rather not have problems with the two not meshing well. I'm eager to see what the characters turn out like.
>>
>>28914582
you mean you don't want to see mitilda vs sherman action
>>
Thanks guys, much appreciated.

And yeah, I'm co-ordinating with Schteel as much as possible.

Also pastebins will be up when the quest triggers are achieved. (extra crews, visiting the shop etc.)

> Chapter 1

"Goddamn, it's finally over" you say aloud "can't believe we worked 26 hours over the weekend"

"Yeah, that lady didn't want to give up the Bouncy Castle, that fucked up our schedule" Robert replies

"It was a bit dodgy anyway, we were in the hood with a bunch of gang bangers"

Rob thinks about this for a second before replying "I doubt they'd stab us up for a Bouncy Castle"

"You don't know that, I mean that kid tried to step you out and he was like 8"

"Well, we're getting payed an assload for this" Rob says with a grin

"Yeah, I'll call up the Club Chairman and tell him we'll be bringing the tank down on Tuesday, I've already payed for shipping just need to pick it up on the other side" you say trying to math out how much you made in your head.

You pull over outside your bosses house and lockup the van before dropping the keys in his Mailbox

As you start walking home with Rob you can't help but laugh hysterically, which draws an inquisitive look from him

"What're you laughing at?" he asks

"Just the fact that bossman has to unload all that shit" you say with a chuckle "I don't know how he managed to get that stuff in in the first place, but now he has to take it out"

This elicits a laugh from Robert "Yeah, he's going to have his hands full with that, I don't know how he does it, must be the master of Tetris"
>>
>>28914675
CanIron has actually already introduced a big difference. If we lose, it's not the end of everything. Unlike LGA. That takes a lot of the stress out of the quest, I think.

CanIron, the best thing I think you can do to make this one different is to make your characters different. We have a Frenchie and a Strayan already, have a lot of variety and focus more on fleshing them out. One of the complaints with Schteel is that he has a big cast with some characters not getting enough screen time. I think you should capitalise on this and make it your niche.

You and Robert arrive home dumping your crap in the entrance and head in to the kitchen.

“It's 7 o'clock but the Chairman should answer” you think to yourself while Robert looks through the Fridge for dinner

You dial the Chairman's number hoping he'll pick up

“Hello, is this Rick Pearson?” you say into your phone “Club Chariman for Savannah Tank Club?”

“Yah, that's me alright” a thickly accented voice replies “What can I do for you today?”

“Right, this is Adam Sledge. I'm just calling to tell you I'm bringing the tank down on Tuesday”

“This Tuesday?”

“Yeah around 3 o'clock, if that's alright for you”

“It's no problem, I can't wait to see it. Though when you're driving over, you'll probably get kids trying to hitch a ride”

“That's awesome, I'll see you on Tuesday Rick” you say as the conversation draws to an end

“Alright, have a good one” He replies before hanging up

“Mission Accomplished” you think to yourself, making phonecalls has always been something you disliked doing
>>
>>28914960
but we're going to eventually have to recruit more crews and therefore character develoment might be reduced somewhat
>>
Oh, before I go....

Please remember to vote in the archives, and go back and re-read for tomorrow if you get the chance. Few plot threads that might come up again ;)

Robert holds up a bowl of left over sausages

“Good enough, I'll have mine as hotdogs” you say as you go for the bread and ketchup

Robert has already sat down at the table as the TV comes to life

“Awesome, Men in Black is on” you say through mouthfuls of food

Robert looks at you shovelling hotdogs down “You like gobbling long, thick sausages?”

“Yeah” you say with a smile before both of you go back to watching TV

“How much did it cost to move the tank?” Robert asks while a farmer is worn like a leotard

“Surprisingly cheap, came out at 252 bucks. But we do have to drive it over to the Club grounds”

“That's pretty cheap” Robert replies “Are we going down with Hamish?”

“Yeah, we're taking the GNX down to meet the tank at the Yard and take it to the Club Grounds. It's a two and a half hour drive so we'll leave at
12 and hopefully be back by 7” you say trying to supress a yawn

“Fuck it, I'm going to sleep” you say to Rob “I'm too tired to stay up”

As you walk to your bed you can't help but feel content. You're getting back in the game

As a writefag myself, some things to remember.
1. Sage
2. Number your posts to give an indication

Anyway, I'm looking forward to seeing more, as you're one of the guys who knows shit about tanks. It's a little dialogue heavy at the moment, and I don't know what's going on yet either. The dialogue itself, while there is a bit too much of it, it's flowing and natural as hell. Sounds like a couple of mates who have known each other for ages.

looking forward to more
