You are Reinhold, master swordsman and victor of the Royal Swordsmanship Tournament. The King was so impressed with your skill, he personally requested that you be transferred out of the army and into the Royal Guard! Not bad for an orphan who was raised in a brothel in a poor fishing village.

The only issue at this point is your assignment... you've been charged to be the personal guard of the King's only daughter Marianne. While she is the vision of loveliness that you'd expect from a Princess, her personality is... well... she seems to have some issues.

You ran into Lord Girardot again, which was a pleasant experience... up until you found out Certain Things about him.

And now you find yourself resisting the urge to rip his throat out with your dagger.

>Congratulations, you are now a mangy DOG!
>Though dogs are loyal, they're not all that smart...
>The Princess now considers you to be her friend!
>But while dogs are man's best friend, they still don't count as people.

Sylvie's words hit you like a punch to the chest, and you feel a familiar cold feeling emanating from deep within you...

...he seemed like a decent enough guy from the two times that he helped you out, but all that is thrown out now. THIS MAN is the one who hurt one of YOUR FRIENDS.

Nobody does that.

EVER.

"...so that would make you my predecessor then," you say with a glare of pure hatred.
"Ah, so you're Princess Marianne's current bodyguard?" Milien asks. "It really is a small world," he says with a chuckle.
"Umm, did my husband do something to offend you, Mr. Reinhold?" his wife asks, shrinking back a little.
"Judging from his reaction, I suppose that he's heard about one of my past mistakes," Milien replies, sighing.

>[2/2]

You can clearly see that Sylvie's about to start screaming at him, but she seems to calm down a little when you take her by the arm.

"I certainly hope that you're not planning on approaching Marianne at this party," you say to him, your voice dripping with murderous intent. "After all, it's my JOB to make sure that nothing happens to her."
"Well..." Milien replies, smirking, "...I -was- planning on telling her how I've been doing since my abrupt departure, but I suppose that I might have to reconsider now."

"Milien? What's going on?" his wife asks, clearly distressed by the sudden antagonism.
"Oh, there's no need to worry your pretty little head," he replies, smiling at her. "Let's go get something to eat and give my friend here a chance to calm down some," he says as he takes her hand. "After all, I'm sure that he's like to talk with me about what happened later."

Casually waving goodbye, Lord Milien Girardot and his wife make their way towards the buffet table while you take Sylvie's hand and pull her along with you in the opposite direction.

Don't kill him.

That'll just cause problems for Marianne and everyone else.

No, you need to take a moment to think clearly.

"Reinhold?" Sylvie asks, her anger towards Milien having turned into concern for your angered state. "Are you going to be okay?"

As if sensing the urge to kill THAT MAN that's filling your every thought, the crowd around you parts in order for you and Sylvie to walk through.

Good. You are in no mood to be putting up with their bullshit.

You people are easily-misled.

Arch is playing with you right now. This is the test to see if you can separate your JOB from your EMOTIONs. So far you are failing.

BEST WAY TO DEAL WITH HIM: play it cool, say it's ancient history, but in secret vividly imagine him being stomped to death by a lindwurm. He plays two faces? So should we.

I kind of wish we didn't lose our shit right there but I understand it's probably out of our control as Reinhold likely has a burning urge to kill above wanting to keep it cool.

And the best course of action in my opinion? Act nice to him, act like nothing wrong has happened at all. Smile and wave, because it's apparent he's burying this issue and would fall apart if it came to light. So just keep it cool, we have more to hurt him than he can hurt us.
>>
>>28936652
As far as we've seen Rein doesn't have any other friends and the only other person he has ever cared for is Citrine, who he killed for, and Volkner, who killed for Rein. To me it makes sense at least
>>

If you had zero friends most of your life you'd probably get attached to the ones you've made.
>>
>>28936672
>That's bullshit.

That's the only fucking way to go. What are you going to do? Get angry? get aggressive?

No wait, we're not here to get angry OR Aggressive, especially with nobles from another land.

It's not that complicated, this isn't our fight, he's not going to hurt Marie in public with a bunch of people and you're a fool if you think he's a security threat. Just tell Marie to stay away and let that be all.

>not playing two faces

You do realize that to everyone else, he's a perfectly well-adjusted person BECAUSE he is playing two-faces, right? Even Marie didn't suspect him until she really pissed him off.

Right now it's the words of some children vs his. And it sounds like more than a few people are pants-shittingly scared of him. Likely because of that second face he keeps hidden.

If we don't play two faces, we have no way to fight back against him. Acting like an agitated fuckwit to him when we're just a whoreson is only going to trivialize the little bit of information we hold over him because it's going to make us seem like a crazy whoreson who can't control his temper.

Don't let the raw emotion take over.
>>
>>28936707
He's not a 'security' threat he's a serious EMOTIONAL threat to Marie.

>>
>>28936718

>>
>>28936737

>>
>>28936740
True, but i still find it weird with how skilled we are and how friendly we are that we wouldn't have made some gruff old warrior friends, plus we are somewhat friends with the adults at the castle.(plus i would like a cameo from some one who knew us in the military.)
>>
>>28936734
>we're just a whoreson
we're an eshenwald now and body guard to royalty

though i agree that we need to not openly challenge the guy or anything, no one will question a body guard that appears on edge
>>
>>28936736
He seems like more of an emotional threat to US with the way we're acting. We got to chill and put on the coolface and we need to it now.

>>28936737
Let's assume it wasn't sarcasm, wanting to isn't the same as being able to. He may still think that what he did was a simple mistake that could be forgiven, trying to get angry at him only makes us look like a butthurt retard who has no actual reason for pitching a fit over the guy. We STILL have no reason to be so angry at him except muh trauma.

I'm pretty sure just letting Marie know he's here and to avoid him would be more than enough.

Arch, what's the situation on official duels again? I recall that they could be fought to first blood or to the death, but killing nobles was discouraged because their fellow nobles would send assassins after you. This guy was newly-ennobled though, so he probably doesn't have any friends to back him up on this. We get Marianne to give us the go-ahead, kill this fucker, and everyone's happy.

Yeah. Play it smart.

"And nothing good'll come from that... THING surprising her," you say as you glare in his general direction.
"Okay, but let's get to Nicolette first," Sylvie replies. "I don't want to leave you alone when you're like this."

With a nod, you lead Sylvie through the crowd of nobles, finally reaching the general area where Nicolette is. She and Melanie are sitting at a table chatting while Sir Gregory, Elena and Andreas are gathered at the next table over, carrying their own conversation.

>>28936795
Seething at him is one thing (and makes perfect sense. cool. be mad; it's in character), but acting on it is another entirely. We'd be perfectly happy to go spit on his grave if he were to die, but we know better than to just up and try and put him there ourselves without an externally justifiable reason.

We're not in the same place we were back when we could just up and decide to brutalize a guy for slighting us or ours. No matter how much we would like to.

My feelings on the matter are as follows:

If he's sorry, cool. That's good. Let him be sorry all he wants.

But he doesn't get to try and atone.

That's the price he pays for fucking up; one girl gets to hate him for the rest of his life. It's a small price to pay, and if even that little thing makes him feel bad, great. He fucking should. And if he NEEDS to atone? If he can't find a way to shoulder that small burden? Then he deserves to be crushed by it.

And if he DOESN'T feel sorry, then at least we're around to make sure he doesn't make things any worse.
>>
>>28936938
And I say: We not only keep him away from Marie, we keep a happy face when around him as well.

>bipolar

No one except for Sylvie and him know why we are angry right now.

It's called 'putting on a cool face'. If something pisses you off, you play it like it's no big deal. Even if it is a really big deal

Acting like a bipolar would be us continuing to be angry and then saying "No reason!" when Lucy or someone inevitably asks why we're so flustered. Because she will, if she hasn't already noticed.

THAT is how you look bipolar, not putting on the cool face when in public.

"Nicolette? Melanie?" Sylvie calls out. "Do you have a minute?"
"Hm? Yeah, what's up?" Nicolette says as she gets up from her seat.
"Hey, is something wrong?" Sir Gregory asks, noticing your sullen expression.
"It's nothing really, we just ran into someone unpleasant," Sylvie replies, trying to laugh it off.
"Just tell me if someone's giving you trouble," he says. "I don't want you guys getting caught up in any bullshit."
"Don't worry, we'll be careful."

After waving at Sir Gregory, Sylvie turns to Nicolette and Melanie.

"Umm... let's get a little bit of distance between us and your father, Nicolette," Sylvie says. "I don't want to risk him overhearing this..."
"Uh, what exactly happened?" Nicolette asks, looking at her friend suspiciously.
"We'll tell you in a bit, now come on."

After walking a safe distance away from the others, Sylvie stops and turns to her friends.

I'm wandering what did he do to Marie EXACTLY. Because the weight its given it looks like he raped her in her own bedroom, in which case he should be dead. Nicolette's expression instantly goes blank, and she simply stares at her best friend.

You guys are mixing stuff all the way up.

You're thinking of Giancarlo.

The Bodyguard incident report is as follows:
>N:I thought he was an alright guy, and he actually managed to get along decently with Marianne even though she's- anyways, things looked pretty good, yanno? So anyways, I guess he was looking to, uh... further his position. Get in close with Marianne when she's younger, position himself as her only male friend, and then when it's time for her to find a husband, he'd be the obvious choice. So now that Marianne's pretty hot, he decided to put the moves on her. And when she turned him down because she's only into guys who won't let her walk all over them..."
>S: "He didn't take it well."
>N: "Not at fucking all. So he was like pushing her against the wall and shit and Melanie saw and ran and got me since I'm a captain and I so beat the living shit out of him right then and there,"
>S: "Should've called me..."
>N: "Totally should have, then Vincent would've gotten to him and he'd be a smear on the fucking wall. But yeah, that's what happened. Marianne felt all ashamed about it so she begged me and Melanie not to say anything, and I only did on the condition of him getting the fuck out of the country outright, or else I'd get -my- old man to murder the shit out of him."

guys , you're forgetting the most important part

We need to calm the fuck down right now because Monique is here somewhere, and he will tear our reputation to shreds if he detects our moment of weakness.

Don't act like he wouldn't, he would humiliate us specifically with the intent of beating us without picking up a sword.
>>
>>28937556
Not really, the exact reason we didn't want to kill him was because it would be a huge international incident that would end with people finding out that Marie was sexually assaulted.
>>
>>28937495
>I'm gonna kill him
C'mon Nico don't
>and then I'm going to tell Celestino why I killed him
Nevermind, that is a surprisingly decent, if still terrible and likely to backfire plan. Or we could just tell celestino now, and have him quietly aprehended and then tortured for treason against an ally of the sovereign crown.
>>
>>28937532

As Nicolette tries to go wander off to find Milien, Sylvie pulls on her arm.

"Nicolette, you can't!" Sylvie says in a hushed voice.
"The fuck I can't!" Nicolette whisper-shouts back, shaking free of Sylvie's grip. "And how the fuck can YOU be so calm about this!?"
"It was all I could do to keep from hitting him with World Breaker right then and there, but I stopped myself because that'd be an incredibly STUPID thing to do!" Sylvie mutters as she grabs her friend by the wrist.

"Just look at Reinhold, it's obvious that he feels the same way as you do!" Sylvie says, pointing at you. "But he managed to hold himself back anyways."
"D... dammit..." Nicolette mumbles as her arms go limp. "You're right, it would be stupid," she sighs. "I'll just go and tell Daddy what he did and then he'll do it himself."

"No, damn it!" Sylvie says, squeezing hard on Nicolette's arm. "Remember what Marianne said when it happened? She doesn't want anyone to know about it!"

>Melanie begins, "Prince Giancarlo was visiting from Marconetti, and um... nobody liked him very much."
>"He'd run around the castle flipping all of the maids' skirts, telling lewd jokes, and being an absolute terror. One day he decided to tease me and make me cry, and Miss Nicolette showed up with her practice staff, threatening to, um... bash his skull in if he didn't stop."

>"Prince Giancarlo provoked her some more and disarmed her when she swung at him... and then, um..." Melanie starts blushing.
>"He flipped her skirt too," Sylvie chimes in.
>"Ugh..." Nicolette sighs.
>"Miss Nicolette started crying just as the Princess and Miss Sylvie showed up. Miss Sylvie was really mad that he'd made both of us cry, and promised to avenge us. But he only laughed at her, making fun of her as a girl who didn't even know how to use magic..."

>"And then she snapped," the Princess says, a wide grin on her face.
>"Yes... Miss Sylvie punched him right in the face before he could even react, and then kept on hitting him until her father pulled her off of him."
>"It's too bad that that beating didn't stick," Princess Marianne says, sighing.
>"And then Vincent bought her a fucking cake afterwards, he was so proud!" Nicolette laughs.

Giancarlo is also sort of a shit, for what it's worth, but not as rapey of one.

What a bunch of fucktards.
1, Marianne might be ashamed of it because he encouraged him to some extent. Remember, we don't have a clear, objective assessment of what happened, except the reports of teenage girls who guard their vagina like its the Holy Grail.

2, The guy apparently regrets his past mistake. While we don't know if its sincere, the man should at least be heard. You may end up killing a repenting soul, purely based on the screams of teenage girls.

>"C'mon, you know I still can't figure out the incantations you told me for those..."

Melanie might have a bit of a harder time getting her out of her crowd of suitors, but will have an easier time breaking the news, seeing as they're closer, not to mention that she was the one who went and found Nicolette to bail her out of the situation to begin with.

I would prefer that we accompany Melanie to go get Marianne, since we would be way better at getting her free from the crowd of nobles, and can just say that we came along in order to get her out so Melanie could speak with her, and then leave them to their conversation.

If Melanie can be trusted to keep both us and Nicolette calm while simultaneously, she can be trusted to keep us in line solo.

If we're really still THAT visibly furious, it might blow the operation, though.

if two of your closest friends tells you in confidence that some guy sexually assaulted another of your closest friends you would not want to hear his side of it. i'm not going to argue whether or not this is logical or smart, but it's a very natural response
That's true. But what of the Victim's side in this? Would Mary be ok with us assaulting this lowlife?

In fact, wouldn't trying to murderkill a noble open a huge political can of worms and make problems for her?

Both were perfectly minding their own respective businesses until today.

Or is /tg/'s justice-boner acting up because the guy was basically given a slap on the wrist and being told to skip town not enough of a punishment for attempted rape?

So, arch, I just want to say, that as someone who has spent quite a lot of time volunteering with rape/molestation victims in a variety of roles, from therapy to prevention, I want to say that A. you are RPing the character's involved perfectly. Marriane's embarrassement and seclussion, Sylvie and Nico's anger, Marianne's refusal to tell anyone, they are all spot on. B. This is fucking painful to read. Like, physically. I was really hoping to finally see one of the shitstains get their cumupence, and while I still hold out hope for that happening, this is bleeding my brain.

"I guess it would probably be better for you to tell her, Melanie," you say. "She'd probably handle it better if she heard it from you, since you're closer to her."

"Yeah, alright..." Nicolette mumbles.
"Don't worry, I'll keep them in line," Sylvie says, giving Melanie a thumbs-up.

Melanie the hurries over through the crowd of nobles to where Marianne is, carefully weaving through them like a pro. Apparently, Marianne notices her friend approaching, and motions for her "adoring fans" to let the young maid through...

After Melanie actually reaches the Princess, you see her give the bad news... Marianne flinches a bit and looks slightly distressed, but then she nods at Melanie with a sad smile as they continue to talk.

You really hope that she's able to handle this...

Not really feeling like talking to anyone right now, you focus your attention on your bracelet. If nothing else, messing around with it will get your mind off of the current situation.

Pulling back your sleeve, you're surprised to see that the bracelet's "angry-mode" spikes have gotten so sharp that they're actually catching on the fabric of your jacket... if not for the enchantment on it, your sleeve would most likely be in shreds right now.

Yeah.

Focus on this thing instead.

It's a way to calm down, and you're also indirectly helping Niklaus out in the process... which in turn calms you down even more, knowing that you're helping someone out.

This has nothing to do with justice. There are at least two reasons why going all murderer on the man is a bad idea:

1) Circumstances and setting. I'm sure we all agree on that. Causing a mess on this party because of hot blood would do much more damage at questionable benefit.

2) Murdering the man now would be wrong, especially if there is a chance that he genuinely mended his atrocious ways.

3) It is not our place to take his life. He has not slighted us and is not presently threatening anyone.

I'm suggesting that we

1) warn Luciana that this nobleman we mentioned as a cool guy is not to be trusted.

2) defer to Marianne's judgement regarding the man.

3) don't focus exclusively on him since he's unlikely to be the man behind abduction attempts and there are larger threats out there.

Both of these are bad ideas for different reasons.
1.would tip luci off to the princes secret and reveal to her we know and this would be the same as telling the king.
2.It would reveal to her that we know her secret and that would hurt her trust with us.

Smoothen out...

...come on...

Focusing your will on your bracelet, you see its jutting spikes slowly recede as it follows your commands. Eventually, it's back to its usual smooth shape, though it does start rippling a bit when you shift your attention over to the Princess to see how she's doing.

"Hey... what're you doing with that thing?" Nicolette asks, looking at your wrist.
"Niklaus asked me to play with it when I could, so I figured that now's as good a time as any," you say, sighing.
"Hm," Sylvie mumbles as she examines your bracelet. "That's the crystalline lifeform that Mr. Niklaus was working on, right?"
"Yeah," you reply.

"I'm surprised that it's progressed that far," Sylvie says, poking your bracelet. "You're able to freely control it now?"
"For the most part, I guess," you reply. "It mostly reacts to my shitty mood, though."
"I guess it's registering as 'part of you' since it's so small," Sylvie says as she adjusts her glasses.
"What, you actually know how this shit works?" Nicolette asks.
"My father didn't want me actively participating in Mr. Niklaus's experiments with it, but I was allowed to learn the basic principles that it works on," Sylvie replies.

>>

True... but we shouldn't allow Luciana to look at the man favorably because we dropped his name. I suppose the damage has been done.

As for 2), we don't need to tell the princess we know it, just hear her and obey. And of course be there should the man decide to make something stupid.
>>
>>28938759
The 2nd and 3rd point don't seem all that relevant.

He doesn't seem repentant in the least, and him not being a present threat doesn't mean he deserves to live.

I'm not saying to kill him, gutting people in the middle of a party is probably frowned on, but if no one would know we killed him I would do it in a heart beat.
>>
>>28938807
he is a cool mad scientist bro, and taught sylvie plenty about magic, but there's a difference between hanging/studying with the mad scientist and being a lab rat to a guy who considers lopping off one of his own limbs and then regrowing it to be an acceptable practice

>Both of these are bad ideas for different reasons.
The former is actually a very good idea, if only because it would be really, really bad if she was interacting with him during the party, remembered that we said he was alright as nobles go, and decided to introduce him to her friend Marianne. THAT would run a very real risk of ruining everything.

All we need to do is let her know that it turns out that our first impressions of him were very wrong. No need to explain why, just warn her against taking him at face value.

Should keep her interactions with him at the baseline "I will talk to you because it is expected of me", rather than encouraging her to take it further in any direction.

Apparently, his plan was that I work my way up and stay on my best behavior, and then over time I might end up catching the eye of a noble somewhere and be set for life," she says with an embarrassed laugh.

Well, it looks like this was a successful distraction after all. While Sylvie goes on a tangent about the theories behind how Niklaus made your bracelet and how he modified the original independent-type crystalline lifeform to create the type that's inhabiting it, you check on Marianne again.

Melanie's talking about something while she has her hand on the Princess's shoulder, but then Marianne shakes her head and smiles at her friend. Melanie then bows and heads back in your direction as Marianne is once again swarmed by the young men who want to get her attention.

As Melanie approaches, you wave to her.

"How'd it go?" you ask, worried about the Princess's reaction.
"She didn't start crying, did she?" Nicolette asks, scowling.
"No..." Melanie sighs. "While she was shaken a bit when I first sprung it on her, the Princess said that she'll be fine even if he decides to try and talk to her."
"...he better fucking not," Nicolette mumbles.

"She told me that she's not afraid of him and is more than willing to, um... 'turn him into a pillar of ice' if he tries anything, but she's not about to run away from him," Melanie says, nodding.
"So she's going to be okay?" Sylvie asks.
"I believe so... she also requested that we keep Sir Gregory and the King out of this."

"Don't think I won't run straight to my old man if that fucker even looks at her funny," Nicolette says, glancing in Sir Gregory's general direction.
"Let's hold off on that unless it's absolutely necessary," Sylvie says as she places a hand on her friend's shoulder.

Marianne says she's going to be fine even if he decides to approach her, but we would still prefer not to have to deal with it if we can help it.

He already knows where we stand now, but based on his attitude, I feel like antagonizing him further seems like the kind of thing that would just drive him to try and call our bluff, since he knows that we can't exactly do anything to him during a party on international soil.

>go back to looking for Citrine

Introducing Grandma to people seems like a reasonable plan.

I'm especially looking forward to letting Agnes be a good bad influence on Elena, but that might be a little wishful thinking.

By all means finish the quest first, but let me know when you're done if you want to try something like that. I'll be here.

>"I guess it's registering as 'part of you' since it's so small," Sylvie says as she adjusts her glasses.

Tina was Reinhold all along.

Which puts a kind of funny spin on everyone wanting to waifu her.

But more seriously, take that same quote in the context of

>With how many different ways there are for stuff to magically ascend into other stuff, I wouldn't rule out the possibility of a magic enough object gaining human form.

We already know that soul ascension happens when a creature's spiritual pressure builds up so much that its physical form can't contain it any more. Normally, this would burn out the crystals, since typically the "voltage" of magical energy from a human or human-like creature will overload their capacity.

Sylvie mentioned that the bracelet is functionally part of our energy signature, which means something Niklaus did with the bracelet seems to be functioning like a voltage converter, making it possible for the parasite to tolerate the typically intolerable magical pressure from a human.

Humans have larger reserves as well, (the "current" in this analogy), so we're going to have a comparatively easy time fully charging the spiritual "battery". And because the pressure was tempered somehow, it's probably more likely to overload slowly into a spirit rather than just frying the crystals.
