You are Captain WILLIAM PIERCE, a combat rescue officer of the United States Air Force. You just recently recovered from the injuries you had suffered from a recent mission, and now you've been invited to a PJ-only party, one a few chances your small but heavily overworked section of the armed forces had to relax and unwind.

You and the rest of the witches enter Hangar P, after flashing your PJ patches to a cautious door guard to ensure you weren't party crashers. Inside the hangar, it's rather busy. To your best guess, there were about a hundred assorted personnel. Not just the PJ crews and pilots, but you can see a lot of mechanics and ground crew in the mix as well. You guess they deserved a share of the spoils as well.

"Well hey, it's RR5! Nice to see you guys!" You hear a vaguely familiar voice.

"I'm sorry, you are...?"

"How, rude of me, I'm Captain Maysey, though you may know me more as Rescue Ranger One." The officer chuckles. "I know we haven't had many chances to meet face to face."

"Yeah, well, getting laid up in a hospital bed didn't help matters." You laugh awkwardly.

"Ah, and these fine ladies must be those PJ witches I've been hearing about!" Maysey grins as he looks behind you. "I know the gender ratio in here's a bit skewed, but I can guarantee you all my boys are well behaved. Well, mostly anyways. Any of them giving you problems you come straight to me, got it?"

"Yeah, thanks." You say.

With that, Maysey gives you a short and casual salute before returning to the festivities.

"Let's stick together for now." You say to your witches.

"That sounds like a good idea." Janice nods.

"Okay." Tarin shrugs.

"So um, what do we do?" Red asks.

Well, that was a good question. Scanning the hangar, you immediately pick up a few spots of interest. You spot the rest of your crew at one of the hastily set up poker tables, apparently trying their luck against another crew. A bit farther back, you can see a makeshift bar with various kinds of alcohol. Though forbidden on base, it wasn't unusual for soldiers to smuggle alcohol in, and most officers turned a blind eye since it usually helped morale (and in most cases after getting their cut as well). Just next to the bar, you can see areas set up for various parlor games, and even a couple of pool tables. You wonder just where the hell they found all this stuff.

"Come on, let's get some drinks." You say. "Can't be a party without a bit of alcohol, right?"

"Well, normally I'm against drinking but it IS a special occasion.." Janice nods.

"Sure." Tarin shrugs.

"Ummm, okay?" Red says, obviously a bit anxious.

"Come one, it'll be fine." You say, putting a reassuring hand on Red's shoulder. "You ever drink before?"

"N-no..." Red mumbles.

"Well, first time for everything!" You say.

"But what if-"

"Red, you've got me, Janice, and Tarin watching out for you. You've got nothing to fear." You say. "Now come on!"

The makeshift bar is being run by a couple of airmen, who, while obviously amateurs, seem to be doing a fairly decent job at mixing drinks, especially with the few resources they've managed to scrounge up. Fortunately, the line's not too long as everybody's already gotten their own drinks.

"Ladies first." You say, stepping aside to let the girls take their place in line ahead of you.

"My, how thoughtful." Janice chuckles.

You stand back and watch. This was the first time you'd be seeing Janice and Tarin drinking, and you could tell a lot about a person just by the type of drink they favored. Janice orders a small cup a brandy, which you don't see as too surprising. You suspected Janice would have a taste for finer things. Tarin, meanwhile, just orders a simple beer. Straight and to the point.

Red, however, stops where she is and just glances at all the various bottles and glasses of liquids like a deer in headlights, utterly confused at the new and terrifying world of alcohol choice.

"Ummm... ummmm..."

"Oh, we got a first timer here!" The airman tending to her grins. "So, how do you want it? Start off slow and steady, or you want to live a little dangerously?"

Red just looks up to you, her eyes clearly pleading to you for guidance.

"Nah, we don't want to be too hard on her." You shake your head. "Just a beer."

"Whatever you say." The airman shrugs and bends down, pulling a bottle of beer out of a hidden icebox. Looking at it, you now notice it's a domestic German brand, rather than an American one.

"Easier to smuggle onto the base." The airman shrugs.

"Hey, I'm not complaining." You say. "I'll get the same thing."

Can't go too wild, after all. You just got cleared from the hospital and don't have any intention of going back any time soon.

"So, do I just chug it down, or something?" Red asks as she eyes the bottle she's holding suspiciously.

"Treat it like any other drink." You shrug as you take a sip from your own bottle. "There's no 'definitive' way to drink a beer like everybody says."

"Hmmm, okay." Red closes her eyes and takes a pull. You see her body stiffen and shudder before coughing a bit. "Agh, it's bitter!"

"Yeah, well, that's the alcohol." You shrug.

"Maybe I can get something that tastes different?" Red asks.

Well, there was always the cocktails or mixes, but those involved mixing in hard liquors. You're not quite sure how Red would react.

"Hey, can you guys mix drinks?" You ask the pair of airmen manning the bar.

"Well, I guess we sorta can." One of them shrugs. "But like, nothing too fancy. There's only so much we can scrounge up on base."

"Jack and Coke?" It was pretty much the standard beginner's drink, considering Coke was pretty ubiquitous, and did a decent job of covering up the taste of hard liquor.

"Okay, that we can do." He nods. "We got more coke than we know what to do with."

"The wonders of capitalism, huh?"

You then turn to see Red powering through her beer. While she manages to chug the whole bottle down, the screwed up expression her face pretty clearly showed she wasn't really enjoying it.

"You don't have to force yourself like that." You frown. "If you don't like it, you don't have to drink it."

"B-but I don't want the others to t-think I'm a chicken." Red says, shuddering again as her stomach deals with the sudden introduction alcohol.

"Jack and Coke." The airman hands you a disposable cup full of fizzy black liquid.

"Thanks." You nod and slip a dollar bill to the airman as a tip. You then hand Red her new drink. "Here, try this."

Red takes a cautionary sip. You can see her body instinctively react to the alcohol, but it's not as severe or obvious as the when she drank the beer.

"How is it?" You ask.

"N-not bad." Red says with a bit of surprise on her face.

You then look up to see where Janice and Tarin had went, and see them chatting up a few other PJs. Well, to put it more accurately, Janice was chatting them up while Tarin sort of sulked behind her, not really getting into the conversation.

"Hey! Janice! What's going on?" You say as you walk over.

"Oh, it seems like RR4 here wants to get into a bit of a friendly competition with us." Janice says with her usual smile.

"Yeah, one game of your choice. You guys win, and we'll cover a whole shift for you." One of the PJs declares.

"And if we lose?" You narrow you eyes.

>>28975441
"We each get a kiss from a witch of our choice." He grins.

You narrow your eyes. There's nothing here to suggest they were being creepy or anything, just some innocent flirting, which was understandable. However, you wanted to make sure your witches were fine with it.

"Janice?"

"Oh, I don't see any harm in it." She grins.

"Tarin?"

Tarin just shrugs wordlessly.

Well, darts seems like a safe enough game. You're quite sure everybody by now is at least a bit buzzed from all the alcohol being passed around. And while you're sure Tarin could pull off an easy win at the knife game, you're not so sure about everybody else. Knives and alcohol didn't mix.

"Fine, I'll go." You say, picking up a handful of darts.

"Heh, alright, let's go at it." Kinney grins and steps in himself.

You manage to put four darts near the center, though one falls out just a bit. However, it was a respectable play. Kinney, fortunately for you, seems to be off his game, as his darts are pretty sloppy. He only manages to get three near the center, while one lands on the outer ring and his fifth doesn't even hit the dartboard at all.

1-0 in your favor.

"Huh, that was a pretty good play, Cap." Red says.

"Hey, thainks-" You then blink. You could've sworn Red's cup was at least half empty the last time you checked but now it was almost completely full. "Red, did you-"

"Got a refill while you were playing." Red smiles as she takes another big gulp of Jack and Coke. "Dunno why, but it gets a lot easier to drink after the first cup!"

You frown. You're not sure of Red's tolerance, though you're not confident it's very high. She seems fine so far and you don't really want to clamp down on her too much, but...

"Last cup, Red." You say sternly. "Better enjoy it while it lasts."

"Awwwwwwww." Red pouts, though you're guessing her reddening cheeks were from the alcohol rather than an emotional response on her part. "You sound juuust like my Uncle!"

"I'm serious, Red, don't push yourself." You warn.

"Fine." Red frowns and takes another, though smaller, sip from her cup.

You sigh and turn your attention back to the dart game, realizing you missed Janice's turn. Unfortunately, it seemed that Janice was beat pretty handily. Most of her darts were barely within the outer ring.

"I'm so sorry, Captain." Janice laughs lightly. "I'm... not very good at these kinds of games."

"Don't worry, it's not your fault." You sigh.

Well, now it was 1-1.

However, Tarin pretty much destroys her opponent, considering her training and the fact she was probably the most sober person in the whole building. However, now it was Red's turn, which you're a bit fearful. Though she's finished her drink, you notice that she's swaying rather heavily and not quite steady on her feet. This looked like a chance for RR4 to even up the score.

Red lines up for her first shot and.... hits a bullseye.

"Beginner's luck." Her opponent scoffs.

"Yeah, fuck you too, buddy." Red says as she continues to sway rather dangerously. She tosses another dart.

Bullseye.

It's like this for the rest of her darts. Even Tarin raises and eyebrow in surprise.

"Red... have you ever played darts before?" You ask.

"NOPE!" She grins teetering to her left before catching herself.

You've heard to people being able to play games better when drunk, but this was just ridiculous.

"Well, looks like we can sleep in tomorrow, then." You grin.

"Well, you beat us fair and square." Kinney sighs.

"Oh, don't be so down, you gave it a good try!" Janice says as she kisses Kinney on the cheek.

Kinney's body goes stiff as a rail and he just falls over, much to the amusement of his buddies. Janice walks back to you, and you notice her hips swaying ever so slightly...

Oh god, not her, too.

"Hey, how about some pool?" You suggest. You've never seen Red and Janice tipsy/drunk before, and you feel that this warrants some observation. Tarin gives you a weird look and you just shrug innocently.

"Oh, that sounds wonderful!" Janice claps her hands.

"Sure, why the hell not." Red nods.

"Also, you better drink this." You say, handing a cup of water to Red. Best to make sure she was properly hydrated. However, Red takes a sip and nearly spits.

"Agh! What the fuck is this shit?!" Red cries.

"It's water, Red. Just water." You say. "And when the heck did you start talking like that?"

"Hell if I know." Red shrugs, taking another reluctant sip of water.

Okay, now you REALLY had to experiment further on on the phenomenon that was drunk Red.

Meanwhile, Janice had already managed to procure the pool table. Last you saw, there was a large crowd around it, but Janice used a bit of that "witch privilege" to convince them to give her and Red a spot.

Janice resets the table, setting up the balls with the speed and certainty of a woman who had done such a thing many times before.

"You've played pool before?" You ask.

"Quite a bit, actually." Janice smiles, setting down the cue ball. "My family actually owns one. Much nicer than the one here, actually. I used to play against my siblings on it all the time."

"Red, you ever play pool before?"

"Maybe a few tiiiimes." Red shrugs and clumsily picks up a cue stuck. "C'mon, Jan, LET'S DANCE."

"Oh my, she certainly is more lively in this state, isn't she?" Janice giggles.

Tarin just sighs and shakes her head.

(cont)
>>
>>28977307
That would be perfect.
>>
>>28977342
Janice goes first, and she slowly bends over the table as she aims the cue stick at the cue ball. The way she does it, slowly and in a way to show off her curves, there was no way it was accidental. She even makes sure to position herself so you get a straight line of sight down her shirt collar. It would be something if she were doing all this accidentally, but you had the feeling that she KNEW.

It is at this point you realize Janice is much more devious than you ever thought possible.

That's not to say that you were the only one entranced by the display, as you can see a much larger crowd gathering around the pool table. This was... getting a big out of hand, but it was too late to do anything about it.

Surprisingly enough, both girls play a terrifyingly effective game. Red, despite her constant swaying and teetering, somehow manages to get the cue ball where it needs to go, as opposed to Janice who is slow, methodical, and purposeful, bending over the table and slowly taking her time.

However, despite the valiant fight Red puts up, it seems that years of practice finally outplayed temporary brilliance. With one last stroke, Janice drops the 8-ball and the game is over, much to the dismay of all of the spectators.

"Well, that was exciting!" Janice says, smiling brightly. "I never expected our dear little Red to be so skilled!"

"You implying something?" Red growls, trying to looking menacing but utterly failing due to her shaky footing.

"Oh you're so cute like this!" Janice says as she ruffles Red's hair.

Tarin just shakes her head again.

"Okay, break time." You say, taking both Janice and Red's hands and leading them to the poker table your crew has appropriated for themselves. Tarin follows close behind, giving venomous glares at anybody who dares try and follow your group.

"Yo, Captain, nice to see you finally join us!" Hoskins grins as you take a seat at their table. "I see you've been having some fun already."

"Oh yeah, loads." You say sarcastically.

"Hah, well, let's see how good they are at cards, then!" Bullseye grins. "Don't worry, no real money, just bragging rights."

"And the loser has to wash the Pave Hawk." His copilot Snips adds in.

"Sure, why not." You say. "C'mon girls, you should play, too."

Janice and Tarin both take seats at your sides. However, Red seems to have different ideas.

She plops herself down on your lap.

Oh god, the stares.

"Um, Red?" You say, a bit surprised. "Do you mind just sitting in a chair?"

"Hmmmmmmm..." Red cocks her head as if deep in thought. "No."

"You really should-"

"No."

Well this was... going to be an interesting poker game, considering on the very first hand she literally shows you her cards and asks you if she's got a good hand.

"Yes sir." Your crew affirms.

"Tarin, you're with me."

Tarin silently nods and follows you back to the bar.

"So Tarin, I notice you're still pretty sober. Have you not been drinking, or do you just have a natural tolerance to it?"

"Really? Why?" You ask, genuinely curious. It wasn't often you could get the normally quiet Tarin to be talkative. "You like staying alert, do you?"

"Something like that." Tarin sighs.

"Well, no big deal, I won't force you to drink or anything." You say, picking up a fresh shot of Jack Daniels and downing it in one gulp. The burning sensation at it went down your throat did wonders to loosen you up a bit.

"Reload?" The airman asks.

"Nah, I'm good." You shake your head. "Anyways, why don't you drink?"

"Well, you know alcohol affects people differently, right?" Tarin says.

"Yeah." You nod.

"Well, Red gets energetic, Janice gets flirtatious and I... well... I get really sleepy." Tarin says guiltily, as if it were some kind of deep shame for her.

"R-really?" You say, a bit underwhelmed.

"Yeah." Tarin nods. "I really don't like it. Makes me feel helpless."

Hm, well, it's starting to be more understandable now, especially considering Tarin was used to being alone most of the time.

"Well, don't worry, you've got me and the others to watch out for you. You're not alone here." You say reassuringly.

"Yeah." Tarin nods and says nothing else.

"Come on, let's head back." You say.

Tarin nods silently as she follows you back to the table.

And, well, you can't help but admit that what you're seeing is something that you totally expected. Apparently, Red was pretty much cleaning everybody out, and nobody could figure out why. Then again, you suppose that they're all just being thrown off by Red's extremely aggressive playing style, which made little to no sense at all.

"GO FISH!" She yells, dropping her cards onto the table.

"...that's a straight, Red." Rex sighs.

"...which is the winning hand." Hoskin shakes his head.

Janice wasn't really doing so well either, judging from her rather small pile of chips. You never figured her as a good liar when she was sober, and doubly so when tipsy, since she telegraphed her tells even more. Even though you doubt Red was perceptive enough top pick up on it, the rest of the crew was taking advantage of this fact to stay in the game.

"Hey, I hope you guys didn't get eliminated already." You sigh.

Well, you decide that you'll just sit back and let Red make the rest of the guys sweat for a bit. However, it didn't quite feel right to you to just stand by and let them take advantage of Janice like that. It seemed like the poor girl needed some help. You lean in next to Janice.

"Looks like you're having some trouble there, Janice. Need some help?"

"Mmmm, maybe just a bit of help." Janice giggles.

"Here, let me see." You playfully snatch Janice's cards out of her hand and take a look at them.

"Ah! Give those back, please!" Janice yelps.

"I'm just borrowing them." You say and look up. "Hey Tarin, you should join in too."

"No, I think I'm-"

"NONSENSE." You say. "You should sit down and play some cards!"

"Is that an order or a suggestion?" Tarin raises an eyebrow.

"Whatever works."

Tarin sighs and takes a seat, and Hoskins deals her her cards.

You glance at your cards, and then the cards already on the table. There was only one card left to play, and if you were luck, if that card was a diamond, you'd get a flush. Everybody seems to be betting rather conservatively, suggesting they didn't have good hands, while Red pretty much put down half her huge pile of chips, though that could mean anything.

Trying to read Tarin was like trying to read a stone tablet written in Byzantine.

"Hmmm, seems like we're in a tough spot." You whisper into Janice's ear.

"R-really?" Janice stammers as she shifts in her seat nervously.

You shrug and put in a moderate bet. Just enough to meet the minimum.

"You know, we could always bet more than just chips..." Janice whispers as she undoes the first couple of buttons on her shirt.

"No." You cut her off. "At least not in public."

"Awww, fine." Janice sighs.

Finally, the last card is played.

It's definitely what you need. You've got the flush. However, you try to stay stoic so as not to give away any tells.

"Oooooh, is that a good hand?" Janice asks.

"Maybe." You sigh. She was totally going to give it away.

"ALL IN, MOTHERFUCKERS!" Red cackles as as shoves her entire pile of chips into the center of the table.

"All right, I'm all in too." Tarin say nonchalantly.

The others seem a bit more uncertain, but they eventually all go all in too.

The way you figure, you've got a good chance at winning, but you're afraid that someone here on the off chance might have a better hand.

"Okay, all in." You grin and lay down your cards. "Flush-"

"Four of a kind." Tarin says, dropping down her cards.

"Jenga!" Red snickers. Her hand didn't even have anything at all.

"Oh, I guess I win." Tarin tilts her head. "Huh."

Well, that was a bit unexpected.

"Well it looks like we've got a winner." Hoskins sighs and checks his watch. "Well shit it's getting late. We'd better start packing it up."

"Yeah, we'll handle things here, sir." Rex says. "You can probably head back to the barracks."

"Yeah, I guess." You nod. You and Tarin could each help get Red and Janice back to the barracks. Neither of them seemed to be in any condition to be wandering around the base.

"So, how do we handle this, sir?" Tarin asks.

While you would have liked to just carry them both at once and save Tarin the trouble, you weren't THAT strong. Even PJ's had their limits.

"Hey Tarin, you mind helping me out here? I'll take Red you take Janice?"

"Sure." Tarin nods, helping prop up Tarin by putting her arm around her shoulders. Janice wasn't so far gone that she couldn't walk. She just needed a bit of assistance.

"Thanks, Tarin." Janice smiles. "You're such a good girl, aren't you!"

"I guess..."

Meanwhile, you figure that Red really isn't in any condition to walk at all, so you decide to carry her piggyback, since it'd be the most efficient method.

As you make the long trek back to your barracks, you start to hear snoring, and you realize that both Red and Janice seem to have fallen asleep. You turn to see that Tarin had switched from shoulder support to princess carry to accommodate the change in the situation.

with her type of character trying to force a discussion can backfire as it could be seen as prying. This is something I've learned in all my reading. So generally a quiet moment has less risk.

You just laugh and shake your head.

"Heh, never expected them both to be lightweights. Red, sure, but Janice? I thought she would have been a bit more resilient than that."

Tarin just shrugs and stays silent. You don't really say anything either, as you just appreciate the moment, being out here with some good friends. Makes you almost forget that you're in the middle of a war. It's a nice feeling, really, which leaves you wondering how you could have ever forgotten it.

By the time you return to the barracks, the entire building is dark with minimum lighting. You see a note left at the door from Bree informing you that she and her squadron are out on another night mission. Looks like you'll actually have a quiet night's sleep tonight.

As you reach your rooms, Tarin gives you a respectful salute. Janice, who's manage to wake up a bit, tries to salute as well, but her coordination is off and she accidentally karate chops Tarin in the forehead. Though if the girl was annoyed or hurt by this, she gave no sign.

After entering your room, you gently set Red down on her bed. She's still completely out cold. Not wanting her to sleep with her uniform on, you carefully and quietly unbutton her shirt and pants and strip her down to her underwear, all the while reminding yourself that this was for practical, not sexual reasons.

You also make a mental note to get Red to shower first thing in the morning. You knew enough that she'd be waking up feeling less than 100%. You drape her with her blanket and set down a glass of water on her desk. She was going to need it.

You take a big yawn yourself and settle into your bed.

And in your alcohol addled dreams, you see swirling visions of swaying hips, feel the weight of a young girl sitting on your lap, and are vaguely of a hunter's eyes slowly settling on you...

>And that's it for tonight! Gonna be busy on Friday and Saturday so next thread is going to have to be on Sunday!

Good run, Merc!

>>28980472
The rest of the flight back to Elemdorf would be spent retelling the short but intense battle with the Soviet witch to Stalker flight. All four women were pushing the very limits of their magical endurance as things stood, so rather than return separately they decided unanimously in favor of safety in numbers. Coming back to base meant another pass through the storm that was currently rolling over it, but as far as they could tell, the only real threat was the snow, the cold, and the high wind gusts. It didn't stop the witches from constantly checking around them, even after they'd come well within the SAM envelope protecting Elemdorf.

Landing could not come soon enough. Taxiing towards the hangar felt like a sort of torture, seeing warmth in the distance as an actual physical thing, but unable to partake in it. To Holly's right, holding tightly onto her hand, was Chris. She'd had to help Holly put her strikers down safely on the icy tarmac, as she was so exhausted that the engines were struggling to maintain even output.

She found herself looking for Wilkins among the techs that had sprinted out into the storm to help the witches inside, representing in her mind all things involving not being freezing, and most importantly, warm boots. Like the hangar itself, like Chris, it all seemed very far away.

"Ch-Chris?"

"Yeah?"

"L-legs are feeling c-c-cold..."

"You didn't just say that!" Alarm filled the blonde's voice. Holly only grunted in response.

"GET 'EM INSIDE!" Wilkins was shouting, in the lead of all the techs, driving a small cart that was trailing Holly's striker stand.

"GET HER INSIDE FIRST!" Chris shouted back.

Techs scrambled to secure Holly's strikers to the stand. A red warning light flashed on her MFD and HUD Goggles. They'd just rolled into the hangar itself when the MFD started emitting a low pitched ping. Steam escaped the strikers, and Holly was pushed up and out of them, falling into Wilkins and another tech's waiting arms. She felt Wilkins strip off her thoroughly soaked coat and slip a warm poncho liner over her shivering shoulders.

"You still with me?" he asked.

"So with you," she drunkenly replied.

She blinked, and found herself waking up next to Chris on a workbench, wrapped with her underneath the Best Yellow Blanket Ever as far as she was concerned. She was still shivering, but nowhere near as cold as before.

"Nnnngh," Holly yawned. "G'mornin'."

"You idiot," Chris started, as soon as she noticed that Holly was concious. "I told you to get some sleep. You insisted on doing a favor for Spellcaster, and this is what it gets you."

"Can the lecture wait 'till later?" Another yawn. "It's comfy here-"

"NO IT CAN'T!" Chris shouted. "You have any idea how it looked to me when you fell OUT of your strikers? For chrissakes! If Wilkins and Andrews hadn't been there, you'd have cracked your head on the ground-"

"Hey, take it easy on her," Wilkins insisted. "I think she knows that things didn't go her way tonight."

"Yeah, listen to Wilkins, Chris." To that, the blonde witch only grinned.

"To be fair to the Lt. Colonel, you did scare the shit out of me ma'am," Wilkins confessed, sitting down next to Holly. Chris not so subtly scooted her closer to him. "We almost called a doc, thought you got hurt in the scrap we'd all heard about, but Chris insisted you were just cold and exhausted."

"Did you take care of Stalker?" Holly asked.

"Hell, they practically took care of themselves. They're the ones who found blankets we could use for ya, we've got more space heaters to dry off any incoming witches." MacLeod sighed with genuine relief.

"Thanks, I mean it. You're really going above and beyond on this, Sergeant."

"We're support, so we're supporting." He shrugged. "I oughta get going, gotta brief the oncoming shift."

"So soon?" Chris teased. "There's plenty of room under here."

Holly glared invisible deathrays at Chris. Wilkins opened his mouth to say something, thought better of it and walked off, waving as he went.

-

"I feel like I'm missing something here," Holly confessed. "I fall out of the strikers, the guys catch me, I remember Wilkins giving me the poncho, and then I'm waking up next to you and the world is a lot warmer and fuzzier."

"You passed out."

"H-how long was I-"

"Fifteen minutes or so." Chris looked away. "I don't wanna talk about it, I was freaking out. I've been freaking out from the moment you got attacked. Are your legs still cold?"

"Not anymore."

"Seriously?"

"I am, I'm fine-" Holly paused to fight another yawn. "I mean, that was the weakest my magic has ever felt to me in my life, and I think that was an honest-to-goodness witchkiller, but I'm fine."

"How can you be so damned calm about it?" Chris growled.

"You bug me about men all the time to piss me off, call it payback or something."

"Disproportionate response, MacLeod." Chris snapped. "Romance is one thing, you being alive is...hell it's not even in the same universe, and you damn well know it." Sighing, Chris wrapped her friend up in a hug. "I shoulda been running even closer. Could have prevented the bounce altogether, she probably figured she had enough time to...down you before I could properly assist."

"I insisted on a combat spread, that's on me." She returned the hug from Chris, shaking both from the lingering cold and from remembering the look on the Russian's face. "And maybe if I'd been more awake, or maybe if she'd hit us earlier in our search, it wouldn't have been a problem to begin with. I dunno. And...maybe I should have listened to you about getting some more sleep."

"Maybe." Chris let Holly go, shrugging her way out from under the blanket. "I'll go run to the barracks and let everyone know you're okay. You owe us all some of your famous hot wings for this, and that's a price I damn well will make sure you pay."

Watching her friend leave, Holly wrapped the blanket tighter around herself, hugging her legs closer to her body. Her mind was replaying everything leading up to, during, and after the duel.

'Lucky, lucky MacLeod.' She clenched onto the blanket with her hands as tight as she could.

Her eyes started to water up. She wanted this whole week to be over with. She wanted the war to take a month off so she could go back home to the farm and see her parents again. She wanted to not make her squadron so worried. All that time spent, worrying about the morale of her wing, worrying about joint units, wanting to keep her girls from ending up like Spellcaster. She'd almost ended up being a Frank Bishop herself.

She wondered how Chris would have looked, reporting to the base commander that she'd taken on the role of Wing Commander, replacing her friend of ten years, killed by some random night witch on her last patrol. She once again saw Lt. Kerner fighting the urge to break down as she reported Spellcaster's combat readiness.

"Are you sure you're alright?" came the voice of Wilkins. She hadn't even heard him approach.

"Ah..."

"...Bad time?" He took a seat next to her once again.

"No, no it's...it's the perfect time, really." Holly buried her face in the blanket, as though that would hide her from him. She couldn't fathom how she'd managed to act so blase about a near-death experience mere moments ago. It didn't help that she was so tired, she just wanted to stay under the blanket, and not move unless absolutely necessary.

"I...uh, almost cost you that record." Her voice was muffled by the blanket.

"What?"

"All those days with no downchecked strikers."

"Worry more about yourself, ma'am." Wilkins moved closer to her. "Strikers are equipment, you're a person."

"That's what I do." She sniffled. "I can't help it. I worry about things."

"That's funny, I do that for a living too." For her benefit, he tried to laugh. It was a pretty poor attempt.

"Is that why you're here?"

"Well, it's not 'cause of my job, if that's what you're wondering."

"Worried about me?" Holly snorted. "I'm a witch. Flying the unfriendly skies, zapping steelwings with near impunity, snappy dresser, I think I can-"

"Yeah."

Confusion swept across her face as she lifted it away from the blanket to stare at him, before looking away as soon as her eyes met his.

"O-okay then." She said. The blanket was unbelievably warm quite suddenly.

"I could go get some sack time," he started to excuse himself. "I mean, if you want me to buzz off I can-"

"No, I didn't mean it like that-" a small lump of blanket hesitantly extended away from Holly towards Wilkins.

"-after all, there's a new shift up and-" he stopped walking as a blanket-covered hand managed to tug on one of his pant legs.

"Wilkins?"

"Yes ma'am?"

"It's fine, I really don't mind if-" Holly seemed to freeze in place, thinking about what she was going to say next. She coughed an extremely fake cough. "M-maybe you should get some rest." She seemed to sink deeper into the pile of blanket.

"And so should you." He grinned an infectious grin at the witch, she couldn't help but return it. "The El-Tee-Cee insists."

"No can do." She raised an eyebrow at him. "Paperwork for tonight's little scuffle."

"She said you'd say that." He raised an eyebrow right back at her. "I've also been ordered to relay to you that it can wait."

"I guess I should listen to her." She tossed the blanket at Wilkins; he easily caught it. She squinted at his name tag. "Uh, I...need to ask you something."

"Shoot."

"What's your first name?" Holly asked, feeling embarrassed. "I mean, I really oughta know, right? It's kinda my job as Wing-"

"William. William Wilkins."

"Holly." She offered a handshake, and a moment later wondered if she'd squeezed his hand too hard. "Thanks for the poncho, Will...iam. I'm keeping it."

"And no thanks for catching you, Holly? Will's fine, by the way. Better than Billy Willy." He rolled his eyes at the nickname.

"Thanks for catching me, Will."

"Coulda gone pro, they tell me."

"Is witch-catching is an actual sport," she asked, leaning into his face, her hands on her hips, "or am I a football to you?"

"You're a lot...softer than a football," he confessed with a laugh.

"I'm a lot- What?!"

Two hours later, with misunderstandings explained and more knowledge about football (and more specifically, wide receivers) than she'd ever expected to learn, Holly managed to drag her tired self to the the Witch Barracks. Chris was waiting for her, angry and ready to lecture her wayward commander until she noticed a certain poncho, turning the lecture into an impromptu interrogation.

If she had slept with pleasant dreams or horrifying nightmares, Holly awoke two hours later than she'd intended, remembering nothing but her head hitting the pillow, Chris snickering about the poncho.

The one she was still wearing. She pulled it tighter around herself as she slipped out of bed.

'I guess I did tell him I'm keeping it.' She blushed with embarrassment, digging through her closet to find a spare hangar for her new poncho. 'That was selfish of me, wasn't it? I'm pretty sure I still have my own standard issue liner packed away somewhere, I didn't need to take his.'

Chris was long gone for the morning, a note on her bed informing Holly that she'd disconnected the alarm clock. There was no getting mad about that, she hadn't felt so refreshed after a night's sleep since the war had started. By some miracle, there was even some warm water in the showers, despite having been quite literally the last witch in the entire wing to reach them. She had to fight the urge to start whistling before she reached the office.

"Hey you." Chris beamed at Holly, tossing a breakfast sandwich at the Colonel as she walked in, before vacating Holly's seat lest she be thrown out of it. "You slept like a brick, started snoring through my questions about Wilkins."

"Don't ruin this morning for me, I feel great," Holly allowed herself to enjoy the aroma from the sandwich before taking a huge bite. "Gawd, I'm hungry."

"Of course you would be, after what happened. Speaking of which, I put in my report to intel."

"I'll start my own for them after I'm done with this. Pass the word to the wing, I think we'll need to make sure to emphasize how dangerous this witch was."

"Sure thing, Colonel," Chris smiled. "You're wearing it again."

"It's comfy," Holly defended her choice in wardrobe, unconsciously squeezing the poncho against herself as she did. "I'm giving it back to him anyway, I feel bad just saying that I was keeping it, he never even offered it in the first place."

"Youwhat-" Chris nearly gagged on her food. "Holly. Listen to me. Keep it."

"But-"

"KEEP. IT. Trust me, it's yours now."

"...I still feel bad about it."

"You would. What am I going to do with you, girl?"

"...Could you start with getting me another sandwich?"
