The next morning in the pyramid is very busy. Servants are packing up supplies for whose who will be going out to the muster, or beginning to train their replacements. From what you can tell, you're going to be joined by Nakurtum, Soul-of-Lightning, Ninlil, the Bronze Priest, and the Rain Priest, along with some guards and camp followers. Kullaa is going to stay here and take care of Mr. Clicks, and Rabi-Tammuz is under orders to stay, work on your dress, and keep out of trouble. The armorer fastens your newly repaired armor onto you, tightening each strap with a hard tug that he has to put his weight into. "There we are!

> Ask some other people in the pyramid to come with you, too
> Insist that Ninlil should stay home because she has even less training than you
> Just say your goodbyes

I worry about ninlil. I don't know about insisting she stay home, but we should definitely air our concerns to one of the priests. Also, we should ask the bronze priest what the "cost" of bronze magic is. Might give us a tip on killing the bull.

After that, goodbyes all around. I'll miss you rich classmate, crazy girl, blood acolytes, and orphans.

Let's get this show on the road. Did we ever bring up that harness so we could carry people?

I wanted to bring Iltani too, but you guys keep pushing her away. She could be a helpful ally, if properly controlled.

Doesn't make sense to risk a freshly made monster when she has no combat training and is still adjusting to her new transformation.
>>
>>29001548
probably useful, yeah. though, if the blood priest wants to keep her out of harm's way to research her monster shit, I suppose I'll cowtow to that.

That reminds me, we should tell him about the grey orphan child in case we die.

You go around, showing off your pretty armor and saying goodbye to people. The Blood Priest gives you a small gift from his workshop - that clay ball you found at the dig, wrapped up in cloth. "I would have given you something better, but that damned spy stole some of my best items. We've determined that this ball has some kind of magic fluid in it. It's no good for making monsters, but that mole-woman must have kept it in her lair for a reason. May as well try drinking it if you have nothing to lose." You thank him and tell him about the strange thing that happened to your friend from the poorhouse.

Your armor has some rings in it that you can attach straps to, but the armorer never finished a saddle or howdah for you. You may be able to improvise, having things strapped to you or having people ride you bareback.

You find Tabni-Ninsun, or rather she finds you. She runs to you and gives you a tight hug. "I'm really gonna miss you! It's gonna be really lonely around here without you and father. Please come back, okay? Don't be a hero."

> "What's stopping you from coming with us? Just stay away from the front lines. I'll protect you."

"I'll be back soon. But I have to be a hero. It's why I'm like this."

She sniffles and nods. "Then fight well. Kill them all, and don't die, and come back, and I'll do your hair or something."

You laugh. "All right! Sounds good."

When you head out to the gates, you see Dadanum guarding them, with his usual big red cape to try to conceal his woman's armor. "Good luck, Hunzuu. They've got me stationed back here. Makes sense, I guess. We can't leave our home completely undefended. We're in almost as much danger back here as you'll be out there!"

"Hey, I have a little job for you while you're back here, Dadanum. Tabni-Ninsun could use a friend right now."

"The Bronze Priest's daughter? Won't she have me bled to death if I look at her wrong?"

"No, she won't. Trust me on this one."

"Huh. All right..."

"And do a good job. The city is counting on you, too!"

As your procession from the pyramid makes its way out of the city, the people cheer for Hunzuu the Merciful. Some of them throw you small favors, flowers and small religious icons carved out of holy cedar.

You find yourself with a blushing Ninlil on one side of you and a proud, swaggering Soul-of-Lightning on the other. You overhear that the centaur will be joining the Charioteers, but Ninlil was transformed so recently that she hasn't been assigned anywhere yet.

> "Stay with my unit. We'll watch each other's back. Your strength alone will take you far. I slew a monster before I knew what I was doing."

I don't want her up on the front lines, but keeping her in the back with the noncombatants threatens everyone. At least with the wizards she can help them if something drops in on them from above.
>>

Before we assign her in combat

Does she have -any- armor? We've got chitin and all sorts of bullshit AND armor, so we're safe, but does she have any?

A giant lion's hide probably isn't as defensive as a giant scorpion's. Maybe we should have her hang with the wizards/commanders and shout orders to troops with her LOUD.

Ninlil is wearing the secondhand armor you used to wear, which only covers her human half. Her helmet makes it look like her round leonine ears are always lowered in dismay. The strength of her hide has not been tested.

You think it over and decide that Ninlil should be with the forces that will be avoiding head-on combat.

"Maybe! I'll find you again when we break for the night. In the meantime, be careful with those roars of yours. I think they might be a little magic." You pat Ninlil's back and see her on her way.

You head to the unit you'll be serving it. It seems to be made entirely of Footmen. You can't see Ninurta-Nasir but he's probably here.

You skitter to them and hold your head high. Iltani said that they answer to power and beauty. You certainly have power. You hope you have beauty, at least a little...

You wave your spear and flash you polished shield at them. "Hey! Footmen! I'm here for you, as the king commanded. Let's get along, and let's not see any of that funny stuff you Footmen are known for."

Your presence causes quite a commotion. You still don't see Ninurta-Nasir. You see one handsome soldier approach you, set his spear in the ground, and kneel. He has old, dried blood left on his breastplate. The pattern looks familiar. This must be the Footman who was sprayed with blood when Iltani beheaded his companion. He's leaving his armor stained on purpose. "Hunzuu... truly you have see us at our worst. Never has there been such a shameful display in our long history. I am Sharo. Let me prove that my brothers and I can be trusted to march behind you."

> "Wow, you guys really just kowtow to any girl with super-strength, don't you? Pathetic."

You smile. You like having a man treat you like this, but you won't be cruel like Iltani was. "You may rise, Sharo."

Sharo stands up and retrieves his weapon. "If any of my brothers shame themselves, tell me first. I will get the situation under control."

You join the Footmen where they're breaking their camp outside the city in preparation for the march ahead of them. Many of them crowd around you, trying to strike up three conversations at once. Some talk about the last time you met them in that standoff in the streets, boasting of their achievements or their quickness tor recognize Iltani as mad. Many try to touch your chitin. Some of them ask what's become of Iltani, in a way that makes you wonder if some of them still miss her.

> "Iltani met a quick death. It's better than she deserved."

You look around for Nakurtum. You know she's supposed to be here, but she's the one friend you haven't seen today. You find her drinking and cooling off in the banks of the river. You run and pull her into clawhugs!

Nakurtum laughs it off. "How're you holding up, Zuu?"

"Great! Who are you marching with?"

She rolls her eyes. "They out me with the Petty-Wizards. They'll be targeted, they said. They'll need an escort, they said. I say they're a bunch of creeps."

"I wish you were with us."

"Me too. You know, I only joined the Adventurers because they take girls. I guess the Footmen only take girls if they're crazy or half-scorpion."

You share some dried meat with Nakurtum, then kiss her forehead and say you'll see her soon.

The rest of the day's march passes uneventfully. You're surprised that you never even got tired. They don't have a tent big enough for you, but there's some soft earth by the river you can burrow into.

As you explain to Sharo exactly how good you are at burrowing, and he wonders whether you're good enough to sap a wall with it, you overhear that Ninurta-Nasir is coming back from the king's retinue to check on his men.

Ho boy. You brace yourself for the moment when you'll have to talk to Ninurta-Nasir again. You sit and eat more field rations with the men. Many of them tell dirty jokes, or jokes that blaspheme the gods. One of them swears he once met a whore who could stick her head up her own cunt. Sharo slaps that man in the back of the head. "Do you mind?! There's a lady in our company."

When Ninurta-Nasir finally comes around, you remember to be polite. He spreads his arms wide. "Lady Scorpion! Welcome to the Footmen. You will find me to be tough but fair. Assuming you act like a proper soldier. Make no mistake, do anything that warrants punishment, we'll find a way to give it to you!" He's wearing a shiteating grin. You take off your armor, make yourself a cozy burrow, and nod off to sleep. You wonder if Mr. Clicks misses you.

Your dreams are uneasy. You feel like you're struggling in deep water. You surface in a dark river of the underworld to see a congregation of scorpion-people nearby, glowing blue from the unearthly light coming from cracks in the earth. A very large female, with silver charms and ornaments set in her flesh and chitin, seems to be delivering a speech. "Tiamat has faded! We must find another god. The god who has threatened to bring the dead up to eat the living, and the dead will outnumber the living!"

This sets the scorpionfolk into quarreling among themselves. They argue loudly, then some of them start wrestling and clawing at each other.

"No, really! I'm the last one alive. I need advice. We are marching on an enemy city, how do you defeat a lammasu?"

She turns to get away from the fracas going on between her brothers and sisters, leading you on with her claw. She can touch your bare back now, a little. "Hmm... that is not the usual madness, little sister. The faded ones may forget what has happened to them, but not like that. Any chance that you are right is worth taking."

"Lammasus. How do you kill them?"

"Lammasus are lackeys of Enlil. Cowards. I led a hunting pack against a nest of them once. Half we killed with surprise and good venoms. I put soul solvent in my brothers to quicken them. The other half we wore down. We refused to yield until their magic was overextended, and they paid the price. But once you get out of that entanglement, little sister, you must find us! Find the gates beyond the great cedar forest. Find the strength within yourself to break them, or ask the Lady Ishtar for aid."

"Wait, what's soul solvent?"
"A subtle venom. It puts the thoughts into the blood. It does not kill; it even makes the living stronger. But while it holds, whoever drinks their blood will taste their thoughts."

"Okay. And do you know anything about Pazuzu?"

"Does he live as well? Many things are returning. The time for the new hunt is near."

"No, not yet. But someone I know has been talking about him. She says he scares all other monsters."

She humphs at that. "Nothing scares me and my brood! We are strong!" She hesitates to add, "Seriously, though, stay away from Pazuzu. Just find the gates! There is a way, far north of the cedars and the old place of the gods. You may be our last hope, little sister."

You've studied a little about Ishtar. She's a well-known goddess, the lady of both love and war. So she rules the things where all is fair. She's also known to be fickle, taking a lover and then cursing him. She killed her husband Tammuz, but then she rescued him from the underworld and turned him into the god of rebirth.

"Thank you... sister." It sounds funny to call her that. You never even had a human sister before. "It's good to be able to talk to you. I wonder how I manage to do it."

She leads you further away from the river, toward a deep cave. "I do not know. Perhaps the souls of a people call to their own kind. Perhaps that is the burden of a sole survivor. Or perhaps you may be mad after all, and you are really here with us all along. I hope not."

"So, different scorpions have different kinds of venom, right? Can I change mine?"

"Oh, little sister, you were raised by humans, weren't you? To know so little of things. When you molt, your venom may change to match the woman you are growing to be. There are also rituals to take a sample of one venom and imprint it on another. In the old times, one venom became fashionable, then another, and many changed to a popular venom just to be immune to it. But that must all wait until after the new hunt."

She bends down as best she can and lays a large hand on your shoulder. "Promise me, little sister. Promise to free our people above all things. Do not let the distractions of the living make you forget. Not pleasure, not fine meat, not hate, not love. Not even the gods. Say it."

It's not as soft as human hugs, but it's not so bad. She's so big! It's oddly comforting. You hug back. "Can I try a little of your venom, sister? Just a little." She nods and slowly brings her stinger forward to sink into the crook of your neck to fill you with soul solvent.

You stumble to get all your armor on, but even with some help you don't do a very good job. By the time you get to the front rank of your unit of Footmen, you hear that a force of soldiers and monsters has encountered you on its way back to Turtak from the dig site. It's likely that they fought he contingent of guards and archers that the priests had sent there. Now the lammasu has joined them, terrorizing the unready army and setting tents on fire. Your orders are to ignore the lammasu and try to chase and rout the ground-based forces.

You charge! In the confusion and their desire to get away, none of the enemy slingers manage to hit you.

You steer the charging wedge straight for one of the lizard-people. It wears heavy armor, spiked bracers, and a serrated bronze glaive. You slam into her, but her strength proves more than a match for your own. After turning your spear aside, she slams her body back against yours. You cannot take her down quickly and continue forward. The wedge loses its momentum and starts stabbing at the spearmen and slingers it can reach.

Your comrades are keeping the other humans away from them, and their superior armor and training means they're holding up well. You'd have to wade through a lot of other humans to get to the other lizard. You decide you should make sure this lizard is dead before moving on to the other one. You keep lashing your tail at it and pressing your spear between two barbs on her glaive to keep it under control. She uses this bind against you, tearing your spear out of your grasp, then swinging at you. Her blow glances off your shield and digs into one of your claws.

You hiss, filling your foes with terror, letting them understand that you are greater than human. After swatting one blow aside with your spear, you use your deceptively strong legs to leap onto her. Not expecting this, her hind legs collapse. You fall onto her, ripping her flesh with your claws and then stabbing at the open wounds with your stinger. Sling bullets hit you, but you hardly feel them. The lizard-woman feels well and truly finished.

You heave and strain to put the glaive to any use. You make much more progress with your claws and tail, stinging a man here, snapping his spear in half there, thrusting a claw through something soft there. You press through the troubled enemy unit. You end up entangled in the middle of them, but you and the footmen spill much blood. Much blood indeed. It smells like all the land around you is a single giant bloody, kill, and it is yours.

The ones who can break and run without being immediately cut down do so, including the remaining lizard. Your chariots try to run them down, and their centaurs harry them with javelins and cover their retreat.

You glance behind you. The lammasu is circling around behind you and harrying the footmen by starting fires and swatting at them with invisible force. He comes in close, casts some spell or other, then flies away and repeats.

You call to you own men to taunt the lammasu. "You think that runt is dangerous?! I could beat it with both claws behind my back!"

In the din of battle, the lammasu might not have ever heard you. Once it's finished tpying with the footmen, it soars over your head to do the same to the chariots, to help the remaining Turtaki forces escape. A few arrows and sling bullets fly toward it, but the men aren't concentrating their fire, so the lammasu can repel the projectiles one at a time.

"I'll get you! I'll eat your flesh!" You've never been so mad at a bull's rear end. It flies into the nearby hills. You hear orders to give up the chase and rally Ligish's troops together again. It is a minor victory against a force that had not been prepared for you.

The Bronze Priest arrives in a large chariot. "Hunzuu. We should not chase them further. We go north as fast as we can. Straight to Turtak."

You'veben avoiding raw flesh for weeks, for fear of bringing out your inner flesh-eater, but to hell with that! You deserve a reward. You dig into the fallen lizard-woman. It is glorious. This is your kill. Yours! Your own! You start with the inhuman lower half, but by the time your feeding frenzy subsides, you've taken several big bites out other human half.

Sharo comes to congratulate you, or possibly tell you to come join the other men. You raise your face to him, covered in red blood. "Mine! Scavengers wait their turn!" Wait, was that you? You catch yourself. "I mean, uh, of course! Well done, Sharo!"

Sharo does his best not to be intimidated. "I know your first battle of this size could not have been easy for you, in your heart. If you want to talk, I am here."

You wipe your face on your bracer. "I'll be all right. We're going to see worse soon."
