All morning you've been working in the bamboo forest, looking for bamboo shoots and other herbs, when you hear it. A strange sound, like distant thunder, coming through the hills and valleys.

You're here because your little sister is ill, and your parents have too much to do to take care of her. The village elder says she's got the Red Fever, a serious illness. But he knows what to do with her. 'You need white bamboo shoots, royal ring, crocus, priest's wart. Then get some meat and make everything into a broth and feed it to her.'

You have the ring and crocus now. All you need is priest's wart and the bamboo shoot, and they're both here in this forest somewhere. But what is that sound? It rumbles and creaks and thumps like a huge monster strolling downhill.

Is this some Mountain Blade action, OP?

The thunder is loud and strange, but it is far away after all. It's not a problem, is it? You heft your shovel and head on uphill. Fewer people go up the slopes, so you'll find better shoots up there, that's for sure.

As for other tools, you have two pieces of flint with which to start a fire, though you probably shouldn't. For some reason, when you strike them together, they seem soft and incorporeal, almost like wet paper. This is... strange.

You dig around a little more. Wait, wait, this is it! Here's a lovely, fat, round bamboo shoot! But you are still distracted by how soft your flint is. And then when you raise the shovel, something catches your eye at the very corners of your vision and you look.

... it's smoke. Wait. That's- that's your home village! It's burning! How could that happen? A cooking accident, perhaps?

Oh shit! Could it be...?

You quickly heave the shovel over your shoulder and run down the steep slope, nearly stumbling and rolling several times as you try to gain purchase on the dry, flaky bamboo leaves. Then, rounding a thick stand of bamboo, you see something that makes your blood run cold.

A black contingent, some mounted on horses and others on foot, which must number some two or three hundred, is surrounding your village, and the burning is coming from some of the outer buildings. Raiders! They must be... raiders from the adjacent kingdom...

... but when was the last time raiders ever came? The Olukh are a danger, but not in these parts. You are far from any border. Who could these people be? But whoever they are, you know somehow they will destroy your village and everything if you don't... don't... what can you do?

Thunder was probably hooves. We're a mountain bandit, which implies an Asian sort of setting (bamboo), so I'm guessing if we're in the real world we're either Chinese or somewhere in prime Mongol Horde territory.

Odds are the thundering sound was mounted riders heading for our village, so we've probably been dead since we set foot on the mountain, and we're just haunting it now.

The leaves are slippery, and you are carrying a load along with your shovel, but the desperation makes you rush regardless. Somehow the gods protect you, allowing you to find your footing, until you're almost at the foothills and you can see who those raiders are...

...

... only for you to see they are... people from the nearby castle. Your- wait, your own rulers, your own protectors. You see the banner with a stag against a yellow background, flying high in the centre of the host. But it begins blurring as you emerge from the forest and the sunlight is blinding you.

Why are you moving so slowly? You have to save your sister! Sara! No! You hear the voices and echoes of people screaming, people you know and love who saw you growing up, and you can't do anything. Halfway through your run a terrible pain strikes you in the left shoulder and you topple over...

You hit the ground, look down at your shoulder, and are both horrified and mystified. Horrified because there is now an arrow sticking in it, and when you fell you pushed it all the way through your body, its wicked bodkin head sticking out of the back. Bodkin head - a weapon of war.

But mystified because, somehow, you don't feel the pain. It... it doesn't really hurt. You pick yourself up, walk a few steps, and suddenly the men in black are before you, surrounding you. One of them kicks you to your knees. Another kicks you in the head, and another few join in, pummelling and battering your body.

Then they drag a woman, Aunt Oda, and cut her throat in front of you, spraying her hot blood all over your face. Then they do they same to Uncle Henry, the miller, while holding your head down so you end up drinking some of that blood. You scream and scream. They bring out your father. Then they slice his throat wide open, and his calls of your name are cut off abruptly as his eyes roll and blood spurts into your face and mouth.

'... Anything you'd like to say, stinking peasant?' It's... one of the sergeants, his boot on your chest. You don't feel pain in your shoulder. All their faces are blurred. What's happening...?

You hand strokes the smooth wood of your bow, and you smile, lying there. You've always had pretty strong arms, and the very first person you robbed, with whom you nearly made your bones, had this - a magnificent, eared bow, something you have only heard of from the lands to the Far East.

How that guy got it, you have no idea. What you do know is he had no idea how to use it. But you do; you've seen a recurve bow before, and this is a little harder to string with its ears - but very, very powerful. Well, you'll have to string it again today; you make sure it gets its sleep as well, instead of being tense all the time.

It takes you ten minutes of grunting and groaning before you get the bloody string on. It's turning out to a clear, but chilly day, a fresh breeze blowing through the forest. You consider your options; you could hunt for animals...

... or you could find a way to hunt something else.

Getting your quiver of arrows - broad-headed hunting ones, of course - out of the hole as well, you replace the shield of branches and sticks in front of its little entrance. In winter you might have to consider sleeping somewhere else in case the hole becomes a hibernating ground for something...

But for now, you have more pressing concerns. It's getting chillier as you head into winter, and you probably need both meat and some hides. Hides are good for trading in the nearby towns, anyway, if you can sneak into one of them...

... you'll need to consider what you want to track in the hills, even as you begin walking around the area, checking the trees for any potential intruders. There's deer and antelope and even wild bison in the woods, as well as wolves and bears.

Or, if you feel a little lazy, you might always want to consider rustling some herder's flock. If you can get past the dogs...

> 74: Discovery!

If you're hunting herbivores... there's plenty of small dear out in the forests around you. Of course, plant eaters are always a lot more plentiful than anything that eats flesh, so naturally you'll have a better chance of finding something.

You're not really a stranger to this place, but you don't know it well. Just long enough to find a place to sleep, and then to dig that little hole of yours. You feel confident at first while you clamber over rocks and scrabble up the steep slopes, passing both great stands of wild bamboo and some large trees, oak and elder and willow.

It isn't too long before your confidence is rewarded with a sighting of some tracks. Hmm. These aren't old, but they're not too recent either. Still, tracking what looks to be a herd of about 8 to 10, you cross a little stream and then negotiate a slightly slippery... oh wait, look!

Right, never mind the slippery downslope. The herd took another path down; following their tracks, noting the bent branches and occasional disturbed earth, you eventually come across some fresh, glossy deer pellets. They're still slightly wet. They're not far off.

It's barely noon when you finally come across them. They're jungle deer, not large and not spectacular, but tasty - two stags, six does, two young ones. They're still relaxed, but you know you're upwind of them.

Maybe you can risk a shot at them after getting just a little closer, before they catch on. Or you could detour round widely and then sneak in a *lot* closer, hopefully, before getting off your shot. You think, judging by how they're relaxed, you have a bit of time to make that manoeuvre. Unless something disturbs you...

but still if we are initially succes with placing us in a good downwind postions we ought to go for it as long as we are ready to shoot so we least get one no matter what. but if we can get closer we have the chance to get more than that
>>
> ... Right, I'll take it as downwind.

Well, no matter how powerful your bow is, at 70 yards the deer are merely little specks, and you haven't the confidence to hit something from that distance.

It will have to be quite a wide detour, though; getting up and staying at a crouch, you begin walking across the soft ground as gently as you can. Damn, if something comes along and disturbs the bloody deer, you'll shoot *that*...

The wide detour doesn't take too long, since here the slope tapers somewhat, becoming more gentle. But as you dodge between trees, something feels a bit wrong, and just as you catch sight of the deer again you suddenly feel another presence.

That's strange. Deer are normally a lot sharper than hunters, but those deer look relaxed, unsuspicious. And yet you... you take another few paces, and then look down and spot something. Fresh, wet tracks.

Human tracks.

Someone else is stalking the deer, and is ahead of you! You glance up at the relaxed deer again and quickly nock an arrow first, in case you need to shoot quickly. Then you move behind a plane tree and glance around you. Can't see anyone. Whoever's here is pretty good at hunting too...

Forsaking cover, you crawl on your hands and knees with the bow now kept on your back, your movements slowing ever more as you close in towards your quarry. They're still calm... still calm... the little ones still playing...

You're not going to take the little ones. Maybe a doe. The stags sometimes taste a little funny, and anyway hunting stags is an affectation of those bastards who like to think they're noble. You're just twenty five yards off now... almost twenty, taking your bow, creeping into the ferns.

Brushing a frond slowly from your face, you nock an arrow again and lift your bow slowly. It's still in the ferns. By the time there's a loud noise it'll be too late for the deer. You feel your shoulders tense in the slightly awkward position, and the bow is only partly drawn when you loose - but it's enough. This bow shoots nearly a hundred paces at full draw; it will pierce, and indeed it does.

The effect is immediate; the stricken doe springs to her feet and prances madly, and all the rest also rise and run. But in the very moment after that, you see something else - a long spear - flying from a tree nearby and striking one of the stags in the neck. Panicking, the herd scatters into two groups, both the injured ones limping after them, fear in their eyes.

'Damn!' You hear a loud voice from near you, and then the hunter gets up to chase. You're still concealed...

> You're really going to give up the deer and go for the other hunter? Sure. That'll be an opposed roll, then.

> 79 vs. 81: A close shave.

Your first instinct is to head for the deer, but then you suddenly consider the other hunter. Wait, another hunter in the hills? Even though a gang would raid and steal and hunt better, maybe this could be competition? Also, why not waste an arrow on a deer you didn't intend to eat and shoot the guy instead?

In subsequent times you will wonder why you made that decision, but in the head of the moment, as you roll around in the ferns facing the hunter, it seemed like a good idea. Even better since it's a human, and he's running directly away from you in the direction of the deer he just speared. That was actually a really good throw...

At a distance of not more than twenty paces, you quickly get up into a kneeling position and loose the nocked arrow. But your residual momentum, and the fact that the ferns are slippery and you're a bit heavier than you thought you'd be, makes your arrow fly just a little off; instead of sinking directly into the rival's heart, it instead tears through cloth and presumably flesh, gouging its way through his left shoulder upwards. There's no sound from the person immediately, and you nock another arrow, watching him stumble-

-and then suddenly he turns around, rolling forward, and there's something heading for-

I was just saying not all bandits are crazy murdering fucks. We could have a little more tact with killing and stealing.
>>
>>29018902

FUCK!

You feel a stabbing pain in your hip, and momentarily topple backwards. Looking up, you blink at the sight of a dart - about a foot long, made of sharpened wood with what seems like a metal head - sticking out of your hip. You can feel its head scraping against your bone.

OH FUCK! Oh FUCK why the FUCK-

Now panicking, you scramble to your feet, vaguely aware of the advancing figure. But with that thing in your hip you have no chance. He gives you a mighty kick in the ass, and you roll aside to avoid impaling yourself; and then suddenly there's two knees on your stomach knocking all the wind out of you, and a face above you. He's holding your head down with one hand, covering your eyes, and has a knife against your throat with the other.

'What the *fuck* was that?'

You feel the knife move, and wriggle when you feel the blood flowing out. Oh fuck, he's actually going to slice you like they did your dad...

You struggle for a little while more, trying to knee him; but he simply moves to straddle you, brushing against the dart in your hip with excruciating pain and pinning your arms to your sides. You're now as good as a pig waiting for the knife.

'I'm asking you,' the voice says. 'What the fuck was that? And who the fuck are *you*?'

You don't know if you're hallucinating, but the voice sounds surprisingly like... like it isn't a man who's talking to you. It's angry, but there's some smoothness about it...

Well, whatever the gender, if it moves that knife hard against your throat, you'll be a squealing dead piggy. Have you considered negotiations, perhaps? 'I'm a hunter. I'm just a hunter. An injury for an injury! There's no need to kill me! We're quits!'

'We're what?'

'We're quits! You wounded me, I wounded you!' Panic seeps into your voice. You fucking idiot, what the fuck were you thinking? Then again, how'd you know the hunter turns out to be good at fighting as well? 'You can take my quarry as compensation. If it's still here.'

There's a long pause, and then a laugh, loud and bright as if you'd said something truly hilarious. Then the hands move away from you, first the knife, and then uncovering your eyes, allowing you to see... oh. he's put on a mask hiding much of his face. His eyes are showing, though - grey-green, yet bright and shimmering, like a stone after rain.

'So. Who the hell are you?' He casually reaches back and yanks the OH FUCK OWWW. 'And when did you come to these hills?'

'You ought to tell me your name first,' you say, mustering all the daring you have. You have quite a bit. You've killed people on the road before, haven't you? You've taken down a wolf, though you didn't manage to skin it before the pack descended on you.

Brave, but not dumb. You think you strike a reasonable balance. Then again...

'And why is that?'

'You win the fight,' you smile and try to test your leg, which holds up - just. 'So be honourable.'

'Honourable! Hah!' But he nods. 'I am Stellius. And you?'

'Ephidel. Pleased to meet you.'

'You won't be for long. You're in our territory.' He plants his hands on his hips. For a bandit or hunter, and he's probably a bandit, Stellius is quite well dressed, though a lot of it is skins. Maybe he's stolen someone's clothes and they fit nicely, who knows. 'How long have you been in the woods?'

Should you tell the truth? His territory, your arse. 'Six months,' you say, and his eyes widen. He moves on you, threateningly.

'I asked you a question. I want an honest answer, sirrah.'

'You have it then, sirrah,' you push his shoulder, which makes him so surprised he doesn't push back. If he did you'd probably be right back on the ground. 'Six months. Since the end of spring. I've been hunting.'

'... Gods be damned.' Stellius looks down for a moment. 'Well. Then I must bring you to see the brothers.'

'Your what?'

'My brothers. We are the ones who actually own this hill and this forest.'

'By own, do you mean you poach from and sleep in?' You fold your arms. Damned if you let this... presumably man talk down to you like this. You didn't become a bandit to- anyway. 'Because if so, then it's a shared hill now.'

Stellius makes to strike you, but you stop him and he grabs your lapel instead. 'You-'

'Also, also,' you say, grabbing his hands. Huh. For someone who's so good at throwing darts, they're rather on the small side. 'Don't we have deer to track?'

'I-' he blinks as he realises you're right. 'Shit. We have to go.'

'You go ahead. I can hardly walk, thanks to you.' You shove him, and he gives you the furious glare of the outmanoeuvred. 'Go on then, hunter! Go!'

'If you dare walk away from under this tree, I'll make that the last walk you take.'

'Fine!' You lean against the plane tree, wincing, and watch Stellius run off. Then you groan and moan your way into a sitting position and look at the wound. It's not all that deep, but... hell, you'll tie it up a little.

> cont'd.
>>
>>29019249

You sit there, wondering about things and listening to the sounds of the forest. That was a bit of a gamble on your part, that he wouldn't just slit your throat and have you as dinner instead, but it seems to have worked. Now, however, if the sounds of the forest were to include a leopard or wolf or bear, then it would really be curtains...

Worrying about that, adjusting constantly to make your wound feel a bit better, you eventually hear footsteps and Stellius coming back. He's got the doe, with your arrow in it and blood sluicing all over its head from a cut neck, over his shoulders while he glares at you.

'I'm going. I'm going.' You struggle to stand up. 'I'll hobble. We can see who's slowest to your brothers.'

'They're that way.' Stellius nods, eyes hard and gleaming, and hefts the deer. You hobble after him, keeping a short distance. That's a professionally killed doe, you have to say. Also, thanks for the arrow back.

In a moment of unconscious panic, you reach behind you and are immensely relieved to touch your bow. Also your quiver of arrows, without which the bow isn't much good. They're here! They're both here. You wouldn't drop that shit without dropping at least your lower leg.

Hobbling up a little more quickly, you address Stellius, trying to be nice. You probably ended sounding a little more mocking. For some reason, when you try to be respectful, you end up with a weird accent.

'So, Stellius, where'd ye find yer feet first?'

'What?' He blinks. 'Oh. Somewhere north of here.'

... well, you do. That isn't saying very much. 'That's a well keeled doe, I say. Clean cut in the right plaice.'

'... Yes, well, I have been killing them since I was eleven.' He shrugs the deer a little. 'Well, they're over behind there. There's a hide there. Have you never seen us in the hills before?'

'No. I'm good at hiding.' You've been to this bit of the hills, though you've never felt the temptation to go up this route. A single, bare rock stands out from thick stands of pine and oak trees, and it just feels a bit... off. Now you realise your suspicions were right.

As you hobble up the steeper hill, Stellius suddenly speeds up ahead of you and you hear someone yell something. 'Hey, it's Ste-'

'I'm here, I'm here!' He yells back. 'We've got strange company!'

A few minutes later you're leaning against a wooden walking stick, which is nice. Your bow is in their hands, though. Besides Stellius there's just two of them, both rather lithe men who look you over.

'You wouldn't believe this,' Stellius says. 'He says he's been half a year in this forest.'

'And we never seen him,' the more bearded one says. 'Well, give you that. You're good. As you can see, we're a little gang here. So what about you?'

With your bow in their hands - not to mention with them all armed and facing you - maybe this isn't a time to be too defiant. But then you're not about to lie down and cry uncle either.

'What about me, then?' You say, as calmly as you can. 'My family and village got slaughtered a year ago. I wandered around, robbed a few people, then fled into these hills in late spring. I hunt things, and if people cross my path, I relieve them of their purses.'

'Is that so,' Stellius says. He's standing, for some reason. 'So how much have you stored up?'

Oh. Uh... damn. 'Not... much. There isn't much one person can do.'

'But four people?' The less bearded one says. 'I'm Mudel, by the way. Rilius, and Stell, uh, Stellius.'

'What, we're just going to let him join us?' Stellius says, surprised.

'Why not? If he can hide from us for six months, he's good. And this bow is nice, anyway,' Rilius says. 'So, what say you? Shall we share this deer between us?'

'If I say I'm out?'

'Then you get your bow and arrows back.' Mudel nods. 'And you get the fuck out of these hills.'

Mudel gives his promise in a very serious way, and you think about this for a very long time. To be honest, to hunt and survive in the wild, finding berries (that don't kill you) or game - you've done all that for a year and a half, and about ten years before that, and if need be you can do it for a good 20 years onwards. If you have 20 years onwards.

In that sense, you don't need them. And yet. And yet is that all you want? To survive, to creep around the woods hunting deer until you're too old to hunt deer, or freeze to death on a bad winter? Last winter, hiding in a snow hole, you very nearly did cark it. It's not something you want to do.

And if you want to wreak vengeance, no matter in how small a way, against the nobility that run this kingdom and their fucking politics and their waste and excess and cruelty, then you are going to need to be more than one person. To do anything in these times, you're going to need to be more than one person...

'Hey. You nodding off or something?' Stellius says. Rilius laughs as you blink. 'So what? I have a deer to gut, get on with it.'

'Oh yes, the deer! I'll get on it!' Mudel quickly jumps up and runs out of the hide before anyone can stop him. But Stellius is still staring at you with those eyes.

'I... I'm in,' you say. 'Give me a share of that deer.'

'You shall have, that, and-'

'Also, give me a fucking seat. My leg is killing me.'

'Did you do this?' Rilius turns to his companion, who shrugs. You get a stool to collapse on, and then your bow is handed back to you and Rilius heads out as well. 'Take good care of him!'

'Yeah.' Stellius turns to you. 'Well. They're in a good mood. I was hoping they'd bury you out back for shooting me. But welcome, I suppose. You want that looked at?'
