You stand up and wipe your mouth of the peach juices. You ask if Ai has anything she'd like to do today, since she's your guest. She seems to think as she chews, then reaches for the paper. She writes, then hands it up to you. She asks if you wouldn't mind picking out some potatoes from the garden, and you nod happily. You then head off with the bird to begin training for the day.

"Alright human, it's time to finally learn the forms. Now these will take along time to master, especially for you, being as slow on the uptake as you are, so I will only try to force them on you one at a time."

After several hours of practice, and a lot of punching the wall, you finally get the hang of the Stone Skin form.

"Congratulations, man. You've managed to make something of yourself!"

You look down at your knuckles. Bloody and bruised. They sting pretty badly. But at least now you're done for the day. You look up at the sky, and see that sundown is only an hour or two away.

You head over to the garden and begin digging potatoes from the soft ground. Despite the damp and loose soil, you find it quite hard to pull them up. Eventually though, you manage to get half a dozen, and brush them off. Then you head to the kitchen to find Ai.

When you present her with the potatoes, she smiles, but then changes it to a frown when she sees the blood on them, and then your hands. What follows is a ten minute session of her angrily scribbling on her roll of paper, before thrusting it into your chest. She writes and entire lecture on it, far too messy to read well, but the point gets across. You apologize, and she takes you by the wrist and drags you to the sink, where she washes the dirt and blood from your hands. She leaves you in the kitchen, and comes back with a from who knows where, and proceeds to wipe your hands with some sort of greenish balm and bandage them.

The two of you wash and peel potatoes, and together cook them into a decent soup using some other vegetables. It's not an amazing creation, but it's better than the raw stuff you've been eating. After you finish, you lay back and rub your belly, thanking Ai for the meal. The rest of the evening goes by normally, as the two of you lounge on the balcony and relax.

That night, as you are drifting off to sleep, you hear something slip beneath your door. The sound of flapping papper approaches you. You open your eyes and look down to see the spider, dragging a sheet of Ai's roll behind him. You lift it up and hold it to the moonlight to read. It says, "Blanket"

You slide off of your bed and stretch, then scratch yourself. The spider climbs your bare leg and makes it up to your shoulder. The two of you head off to find something to serve as a blanket.

You check all the open cells, but find nothing. You know already that none of the other rooms would have anything of use, so you resort to finally breaking open the doors to the locked cells to see inside them. The first two you break bare nothing but normal beds. The third one has a lantern inside, which you note for later. The fourth and final door takes a bit more effort, but when you kick it in, you find a bed piled high with quilts. You taker the one from the top, but realize that it is full of dust. You drag each quilt out into the hall, one by one, until you near the bottom of the pile and finally find one that isn't too dusty to use. You carry it to Ai's cell, and knock. No response, of course, and you enter. You see her, hugging her knees on the bed, nude and hiding herself from your sight as best she can without anything to cover her. You blush slightly and toss the quilt over her. She rearranges it to show her face, and the spider crawls into the bed with her. As you are about to turn and leave, you hear the flapping of paper, and turn back to see she is holding out a torn sheet. You take it and read. "Banging?"

You tell her goodnight, and head back to your own cell. You spread out on your bed, and close your eyes. Sleep comes easy, but that night you see more strange forms, bending and twisting in the empty space in your mind.

You wake up, and see the sun. You get out of bed and stretch, then notice something on the ground. There is a bottle of green stuff. You pick it up and hold it to the light. It refracts the light beautifully. You pull out the stopper and smell it, getting a lovely aroma of peaches. This must be the gift Ai meant to give you.

You lift the bottle over your heard and pour the contents into your open mouth. It tastes sweet, yet also sour. You think that it might taste better chilled, but as this thought ends, you start to feel warm. Very warm. The feeling is similar to the feeling you got from the yellow fizz that let you climb the mountain, but your thought are much less focused. Your muscles cry out, urging you to move. You begin hopping back and forth on each foot, but it isn't enough. You shadow box, and it relieves the stress somewhat, but soon you grow bored of hitting nothing, and begin hitting the wall. Before you know it, you're pounding away at the stone wall of your cell and making astonishing progress in breaking through to the next one. Thanks to the Stone Skin form, your knuckles aren't damaged in the slightest. You finally manage to punch a hole straight through the wall, and now need something else to do with your incredible energy.

Still in your boxers, and full of amazing heat and energy, you run out the door of your cell and head for the balcony. You pass by the spider on the way, but don't stop to chat. You make it to the balcony and leap off of the edge at a full sprint, launching yourself through the air and onto another one of the mountain peaks. You jab your hands into the rock on the other side, all the way up to your elbows. You look up to the sky and take a deep breath, filling your lungs with the cold morning air. Then, you begin punching.

You punch and punch, over and over for hours. The sound of your fists hitting stone resembles that of rain on a lake surface. Past noon, all the way until near sunset, you continue to ravage the mountain face with your bare hands, often digging your bare toes into the side of the mountain for support. No matter how many times you strike it, it never feels like quite enough challenge.

You keep this up until finally, you leap down and climb back up to the balcony to admire your work. The visage you have created is impressive, although it does not resemble you as strongly as you hoped. Without any color or fine detail, you'd say it looks more generic than anything. Still, you have expended most of the energy given to you by Ai's gift.

You scrub yourself vigorously, enjoying the sensation of hot water on your skin. As you wash, the final remnants of the energy built up in you fade away, and you are left feeling relaxed. You climb out of the tub, a wooden bowl set near a source of hot spring water from the mountain. You throw on a pair of pants and a shirt, then head into the temple to find Ai. You check the kitchen, garden, and peach tree, but only find her once you go to her room. You peer into the window on her door, and see her curled up in bed, with the quilt you gave her. She seems to be asleep. This strikes you as odd, since it isn't even sunset. Furthermore, you don't see the spider anywhere in the room. You decide to let her rest, and head off to find the bird and spider. They aren't nearly as hard to find, as they usually spend their time in the peach tree, eating the fruit from the branches. You greet them, and climb up to one of the branches to join them. The peaches taste as good as always, but as you eat you notice that they don't taste quite as good as the stuff Ai mixed for you this morning.

You recount the events that lead up to you furiously fisting the mountainside, which leaves the bird somewhat awestruck. He doesn't believe the story at first, but you take him to see your work and sure enough it's still there. The bird stands with his mouth agape, trying his best to comprehend what you've done. After a few minutes, he rights himself.

"Well, what's done is done I suppose. Points for effort man, but next time try to make it a little less dull."

The next day, you go back to your normal training. Ai cooks you up more vegetable stew, which you eat happily. Eventually the conversation, if it can be called that, turns to the matter of her gift. She hands you the roll of paper, and you read it aloud. "Didn't you get the elixir I put in your room yesterday?" You nod and tell her all about the mountain. Somehow she seems disappointed by the story, rather than amazed. She doesn't dwell on the topic however, and the two of you go back to your normal day.

After several weeks, winter sets in and hits with full force. The mountain is often covered in a layer of snow. There are no more animals or bids, save the one who instructs you. He assures you he would have left long ago if he did not feel some degree of responsibility for you. The spider too, seems a bit out of sorts in the cold. He spends most of his time either nestled inside Ai's robes or by the fire as she brews odd concoctions. The shelves in the kitchen are growing full of her various creations now, and she says that at some point, she'd like to go into town to sell them off for better food.

You tilt your nose up and take a long whiff of the air. Burning. Your heartbeat speeds up, as you look around for the source. You see no smoke, but you continue to search. You make your way down to the ground, and enter the hallway. When you open the door, you see black smoke squeezing out from underneath the kitchen door. You kick the door in and see Ai, pressed up against the wall on the opposite side of the room, while the fire beneath her cookpot burns out of control, consuming the pot entirely. The flames continue to spread down the hall after you. You continue to back away with Ai in your arms, ready to bolt and abandon the temple, when suddenly the flames die down and recede, leaving only a small line of fire burning in the stone floor. You set Ai down and go over to look. It is a message.

"Vicart

You deduce that the message must be from your old friend, Vicart. He seems to be in some sort of danger. You don't know where Endo is, but you are sure you can get directions somewhere. You turn to Ai, and she is deeply worried, by the look on her face.

You push her away and tell her firmly that you must leave, and she is forbidden from following. She turns and runs off down the hall. You are left alone, near the burning words, which also fade away after a few moments. You peer into the kitchen and see that everything appears unharmed by the flames. You are relieved by this, at least.

You pack your traveling sack and a cloak to keep warm. While you are picking a few peaches for the trip, the bird peers down at you, asking where you plan to go. You tell him that you don't know just yet, but you don't have time to think it over.

You simply finish packing what you need, and head to the entrance of the temple. As the bird shouts foul, biting words at you, the begin once again taking on the stone temple steps. Down the steps and the mountain you run, coming to a stop at Ai's old home. Nature has begun to take it now, especially the thick snow. You run past the house, trudging through the thick blanket of white, all the way to the town at the base of the mountain. There you ask the locals about Endo, and are set on a path north. One of the locals mentions the roads being very treacherous around this time of year, and suggests traveling by sea. You begin running out of the town, and head north on the road. The further away from town you go, the thicker the snow seems to pile, until you are almost tunneling through it to keep moving. You keep up the pace, sleeping and eating when you aren't running. You run out of peaches in about a week, and from then on live mostly off of wild plants. The cold is harsh. You're warm enough, even managing to build several small houses out of the snow, which keep you much warmer. After 4 weeks, you finally break free of the snow covered fields and hills when you come to the northern valley. The ice and snow gradually vanish as you run, and the air gets much warmer during the day. At one point, your stomach empty, you come across a river that you think might still be full of fresh fish. You haven't had any real protein in months now.

You stop at the side of the river and set your pack down. You kick off your boots and strip down to your boxers before stepping into the water. It's pretty clear, though not totally, and indeed you can see fish swimming downstream. You step out into the center of the river and stand facing upstream. You try to grab the fish with your hands as they swim by, but they prove too evasive and quick for you. Growing tired of grabbing at the water, you instead decide to close your eyes, and try to calm yourself. You wait patiently, feeling the water's flow for any sign of the fish as they pass by. With a bit of focus, you are able to determine when a fish is about to pass by you, and then begin planning your strikes. You swat at the water a few times, turning up nothing, Finally, on the 6th or 7th try, you hit a fish with your open palm, knocking it out of the water and onto the rocky shore. You repeat this two more times, for a total of three fish.

You then climb out of the river and proceed to cook the fish. The taste of the meat is wonderful, even though you're sure you could have cooked them better. You continue following the river, catching fish for breakfast and dinner every day, until you come to a small hut by the road. Sitting outside is a drunken man, mumbling to himself. You pass by, trying not to make eye contact, but he speaks up when you get close. He holds out a filthy hand and asks for any money you may have to spare.

You move to the left, avoiding the attack, and prepare for a fight. However, just as you stop moving, something jabs you in the ribs, hard enough to send you a few feet back, where you roll on your back and regain your feet. You look down and see five holes poked in your shirt, where five shallow stabs bleed. Looking back at the drunk, you see, to your confusion, a third arm that has torn its way out of his ragged clothes. He turns to you and laughs in a raspy voice.

"This valley is mine, human. All plants and beasts here are also mine. Your flesh will be my supper tonight."

He tears off his rag shirt, revealing a total of four thick arms attached to his torso. Two sharp horns begin jutting from his mop of a head, as assumes a fighting stance. You take your own stance, ignoring the sharp pain in your side.

Your speed means nothing when he is able to attack from so many angles at once. As you block and parry his attacks, he manages to sneak several in where you aren't prepared. You are forced to step backward to avoid him, using your footwork as your only advantage. You circle around him, looking for an opening, but you can't seem to find anything blatant enough to be called a weak point. Eventually he grows tired of the dance, and begins scooping up stones to hurl at you.

You rush in, closing the gap as you narrowly dodge the incoming stones. One of them grazes your head, but before another can, you are up and ready to strike. You begin delivering a series of strong punches to his core, trying to tire him out before he has a chance to react. The punches seem to do the trick, but you are forced to back up as he begins his counterattack. You dodge, weaving around his fists and hitting him with fast, light punches.

He grabs both of your fists as you move in for an attack, and begins pummeling you with his extras. He then lifts you off of your feet and raises you over his head. You try to break free of his grasp, but it proves futile as he tosses you away and into the river. You get back to your feet and begin attacking again.

On the approach, you fall into your Drunken Boxing stance. He seems unprepared for this change, giving you a few moments where he is unable to predict your movements. Now the fight returns to the previous flow, but having landed those few good hits, you notice that he is slowing down significantly. You continue to pepper him with light blows.

You manage to evade two of his fists, which leaves him off balance enough for you to drive a knee into his stomach. This leaves him open for a follow up attack.

You open the sliding door to the shack. It is very stubborn, and must be pushed hard to budge. Inside, you see several empty sacks and a few smashed crates. Rummaging through the junk, you find a bottle of wine, which you put in your bag for later. You also find a set of clothes that seem to have been left here by someone years ago. They are half eaten by bugs, but you salvage a pair of elbow length studded hide gloves. They fit well, and you decide to keep them.

You return to the road shortly after, leaving the shack and the odd monster in your dust. You follow the river and the road further north, and deeper into the valley until you come to a forest. The river disappears here, as does your source of fresh fish. The trees are large and densely laid around, and at some points the path is blocked by fallen trees which you must climb over. One night, as you sleep, you are awoken by rustling in the bushes and a low growl. When you investigate, you find a large brown bear. It comes sniffing around your campsite, likely in search of food.

You allow the bear to eat a bit of your food, but as you try to take the rest away, you are swiped with one of it's large paws. It continues to consume all of your rations, until there's nothing left. It then turns back and heads into the forest. You stare at the ripped back that once held your food, not sure what you were truly expecting to happen.

The next week is difficult, but without the snow to hinder you, you manage to pick enough plants and fruit to get you through your journey. You come across a merchant, who is kind enough to share a meal with you in exchange for your help finding on of his oxen, who wandered off into the wild. During dinner, he informs you that Endo is only a day further on foot, and points you to the quickest path. He suggests a shortcut which shaves off several hours, and you thank him when you part ways.

As the merchant said, you arrive in Endo the next afternoon. The city is large and bustling, with people running every which way. You aren't sure where to begin looking for Vicart, but you suppose you should start by asking around. Most of the residents don't know much about any mages, but some of them do say that an odd man has been walking around town, looking for someone. He seems foreign, judging my his clothes, and he uses a strange type of flaming magic.

Let's start by finding our friend. He did say he was in trouble
>>
>>29054308
>>29054325
You ask around town about odd happenings, emphasizing anything to do with foreigners coming into town. Other than you, there seem to be a few people who have crossed the ocean to come here, two of which are of interest. Unfortunately, you can't seem to get a solid description on the second person. All the stories seem to be about only one of the foreigners.

When you finally give up on learning anything new, you head to a local restaurant. After a lot of begging and pleading, the owner agrees to feed you after you make some deliveries around the neighborhood for him. You agree, and spend the next few hours working for the meal. When you do sit down to eat, you are treated to a delicious dinner of pork soup and fresh bread, which you wash down with a bottle of wine.

You spend the night sleeping in a shadier part of town, with a few homeless folk who were generous enough to put you up for the night. In the morning, you get back to your search. The tips you got from the people around town place the foreigner with fire magic in one of two places:

A) A local high class in, for the wealthy
B) A run down old library, abandoned after a fire burned most of the books

You find the library, just where toy heard it was. The entrance seems like it was recently barred, but a little persuasion get is open and you enter. As you look around, you are sure that someone must have been here recently. There is bits of food on the first floor, as well as a number of books which have been taken from the shelves and tossed on the ground. You find a staircase, and climb it to look around the second floor. At the top, you turn and are shocked to see a ball of red flame roaring toward you. You duck, avoiding it, and letting it hit the wall behind you with a large splash of flame. You look back at it's source, and see Vicart, standing behind a stack of books. His red robes and grungy face are immediately familiar. He glares at you for a moment, but his expression changes to a smile quickly when he recognizes you.

"It's you! You came! I thought you might not have gotten my message!"

A) "What the hell did you just fling at me?"

"You like it? Remember how I was telling you about trying to come up with a way to manifest fire without a source on hand? I did it! I can make flames from thin air now, with a few requirements. Sadly, throttling the flames is another matter entirely, so most of what I make comes out either very large or too small."

You ask him about the message you received in the temple, and why he made it seem so urgent. Vicart rubs his stubbly chin, gathering his thoughts before speaking. "I've been going from town to town, studying some of the types of magic they use on these islands. One of the ones I took particular interest in uses the human body as a conduit for magic. My research indeed proved fruitful, but I may or may not have possibly burned down a small town when I was practicing flame production. I tried to apologize, but they ran me out of town before I could help them rebuild. Word spread fast, and soon everyone was on the lookout for me. I had to come into town under cover of night and sleep in this garbage heap. A few weeks after I got here, I accidentally slipped up and sent a chicken coop ablaze, and then soon after that some freak started chasing me around town. Lucky for me, he hasn't figured out where I sleep, but he has made it hard to get any practice in, since every time I go out for too long he seems to find me and chase me around town!"

Vicart describes the man hunting him as tall, red of hair, and wearing hide armor trimmed with wolf fur. "I tell you, he's something else with a sword. I swear I saw him slice clean through a door that was at least ten feet too far for him to reach with the blade. Not to mention, he has some item that lets him shoot this crazy white fire at me. I would have love to see it up close, but you know. The hunting. The few times we fought, I only managed to hold him off by using every spell I had saved up. But no matter how many I fling at him, he keeps coming."

You ask why he didn't simply leave town when things got too hairy. He tells you that this ruined library contains all his notes and reference material, and to try to sneak it out with that man running around would be suicide. There is simple too much. The two of you stand pondering by the staircase. Vicart raises his finger to propose something, but it cut off by a loud crashing noise from below. You peek down and see the front door being kicked in violently. You can't make out the person doing it, but Vicart seems assured of who it is.

You and Vicart run as silently as you can, and duck into one of the rooms nearby. You take cover beneath a desk, and try to keep silent. Below, you hear more crashing as the door gives in. Then, loud footsteps and creaking floorboards tell you that the pursuer is moving around the ground floor. He stops a few times, likely investigating a spot he thinks you may be hiding. Then you hear the footsteps reach the stairs, and begin climbing.

"I know you're here, heretic. The people of this town have helped me to weed you out, and now you are going to face judgment."

You look at Vicart. He shrugs and shakes his head. The footsteps draw closer. You hear the man sniff the air, like some kind of bloodhound, and then begin walking toward the room the both of you are in. You look around for anything useful, but all there are here are old books.

You hear him sniff the air again, and can almost feel his intensity from where you're hiding. Then, you draw your arm back and fling the book across the room, away from you and Vicart. You see quick burst of white flame fly across the room and meet the book before it even hits the ground. You and Vicart pop out from behind the desk, using this as a chance to act.
