You are Hunzuu, orphan-turned-abomination, called into service to fight for your city-state against its rival to the north. You caught a unit of their soldiers unawares on its way home, butchered many of them, and made the rest break and flee. The bad news is that that damned lammasu joined the battle and it now surely flying north to warn the city before you arrive. The Bronze Priest has informed you that the plan is just to get north as quickly as possible, raze everything outside the city walls, and see what the prospects are for besieging the city.

> You want that lammasu dead! Go back to the Footmen and pester them to get moving double-time.
> Head for the commanders and try to convince them to try a different course of action.
> You just killed a lot of people... and had raw flesh for the first time in weeks. You need someone to hug or something.

"Sure..." You agree to the Bronze Priest's idea and let his chariot ride off. You wipe some more blood off your face.

Back where the Footmen are rallying, Ninurta-Nasir is surveying them. He doesn't say anything to you, just nodding to you as if to praise you for being a good soldier. Some men who know a bit about field medicine help wrap up your wounded claw to help the bleeding stop. By the time Ninurta-Nasir heads back to the head of the army, everyone is already on the move.

Sharo ends up next to you as you march. The bloodstain he left on his breastplate to remind everyone of Iltani's treachery has been joined by some other drops of blood from the battle.

You break the silence. "That was... kind of a lot of killing all at once. I think I'm ready to talk now."

Sharo nods. "You're still so young. If we didn't need you so badly, I'd say it would be best to keep you home, let you grow into a woman."

You manage a little smile and nudge him with your claw. "Hey, I'm not that young! In a few days I'll be thirteen."

He nods politely and ignores the huge claw. "How many days?"

"I, uh... I don't know. I never knew much about numbers. But mama always said I was born a couple of moons after Shamash's wedding."

"Well, we'll just have to win this war and get you back home to your mama! War isn't an everyday thing, even for a career soldier. It's just a passing storm."

> "Actually, my mama's dead. She was a whore who got shitfaced and gouged a guy's eye out. They hanged her, or maybe worse, bled her to do some awful magic..."

"Actually, my mama died. A while ago. There are other people I want to go back and see, though..." This is making you feel even worse, though you had hoped it would help you find your courage.

"Oh. I'm so sorry..." Sharo pats your claw with his spear hand. "I should have known better."

"So have you been in a war before?"

Sharo nods. "Under the last king. I was just a trainee. Not too much older than you. I wanted to be like my father. It was against a settlement of rogue wizards who'd found some way to harness the blight demons that come in the dry season. I learned that... well... war can be a fine and honorable thing. But only if we make it so. Only if we are vigilant and control ourselves."

"Control ourselves how? What's the rules for this kind of thing? Did I do anything bad back there?"

Sharo needs a moment to think it over. "I don't think there's ever been a tradition that covers the behavior of meat-eating monsters. Once an old king pardoned some of his men for cannibalism when they were lost at sea. So I suppose it is acceptable when absolutely required for survival. But the important rules are to let the noncombatants flee or offer themselves as slaves. Don't harm the temples of the gods. Don't rape... but I don't think you'll have a problem with that one."

"And does Ninurta-Nasir play by the rules?"

"He's a hero. That's what makes this so hard. He is as stained by recent events as the rest of us are, he's perhaps a little too quick to hate, and he likes to have a tight hold over his men, but he also helped to subjugate Turtak in the first place, before I was born. He's our best hope.

"Well, I wish he wasn't so mean to me. How did he get into Turtak the first time?"

"The sewers. The way he tells the story anyway. He says the thought they were so fancy to have all their shit carried away, but that was the day their shit came back for them to choke on. It might be worth looking into again, though I'm sure they've thought of that possibility and come up with defenses against it."

It takes a few more days to reach the city. Ninurta-Nasir doesn't make any further trouble for you, except perhaps in his mind. Once or twice he nods proudly to you and says "Good work back there, killer." You get used to making a burrow for yourself near the footmen's camp. It feels nice and cozy.

When your peculiar dreams take you, you don't try to hold them back with the usual, more human dreams of the day's experiences and mixtures of old memories. You go straight into the land of the dead.

You see that the fight between the scorpion-men is still going on, after a fashion. In your faded, drifting dream-body, you survey the dark landscape and see the scorpion-men dividing themselves into two camps, each with a makeshift shrine made of clay and the peculiar blue-black brittle earth of the underworld. One is like a human woman, and the other is like a shapeless many-legged thing.

Close. Ishtar rules over love and war. The goddess of the dead is Ereshkigal, whom everyone seems to hate. Her feast in Ligish is quite small. Two large males are wrestling in the center of the ring. They have some pretty impressive moves. That is all.

You go to the scorpion-man who seems to be in charge. He has a thin grey beard, and his chitinous plates seem a little too big for the body underneath as they clack together when he moves. You try to speak. "Big brother, can you tell me about Tiamat?"

He squints to look at you. "Oh, little sister... are my eyes weakening again, or are you fading? Come, live, remember." He pulls you close and clawhugs you. "Tiamat made us all. She is the strongest, even now, after Marduk slew her. After his victory, Marduk and his kin took to fighting amongst themselves again, some claiming kingship, others disputing it, lusting after each other's domains. Tiamat rules the bitter ocean, and that is a domain too great for any lesser god to take. The traitors say Tiamat has faded and will never rise again. But if we believe, if we laugh and fight and celebrate our strength and defy our death, then she will awaken and come into her own once again. We do not lose faith. We do not change, like lesser peoples. We remain strong in ourselves, As Tiamat does."

> "Then let me fight."

"Hi, I'm Hunzuu! I hope you're strong!" You rush toward her, deciding upon your usual strategy of licking claws with the foe and then stabbing with your stinger.

The girl may have been ten when she died, but she's been practicing down here ever since the Great Flood. She moves like nothing you've ever seen, sidestepping you, rolling her claws between your own so you can't get a grip on her, even slipping under you just before you're about to raise your stinger , then attacking your underbelly with her claws, legs, and teeth all at once. You fall to one side and yelp in pain. The pain makes you a bit more solid, though.

Her claw-work reminds you of some of the weapon lessons you had with Nakurtum but didn't pay attention all the way through. When weapons bind, the one on the inside has all the control and the best potential to reach the enemy. You never thought to apply that to fighting with your claws.

You continue fighting your hardest - this is why you're here after all, to learn. You get out from her hold on you and manage to strike at her a few times with your claws, but before long she's grappling with you again, on top of you, pushing your claws back painfully with her own and biting at your shoulder with her human teeth, hissing.

The scorpions reach a consensus that the fight is over - you have lost. There is no shame, though. The adults are still laughing at your audacity and calling you "brave little sister." One with a deep scar across his human chest touches your hair as though analyzing you. "This one will not fade, I can feel it." And the pain is oddly fleeting. Perhaps it's because of the dream, or because of the nature of the underworld, but your injuries don't stick like they should.

That was fun, you decided. Maybe even a little informative. But you decide it's time to see how Ishtar's camp is doing. You slip away.

Unlike Tiamat's camp, Ishtar's camp has scorpions on patrol guarding the perimeter. They hassle you. "A convert, little sister? Or a spy?"

"Stop that! Bring her up!" You hear a strong voice call to them. As they obey, you see that it's the enormous female you talked to the other night, the one with the silver ornaments on her carapace.

She welcomes you with open claws. You see that Ishtar's camp is somewhat smaller, and the ones not busy practicing in informal skirmishes around the base of the statue are praying to Ishtar or doing some kind of strange standing claw-wrestling that might be the beginning of scorpion mating.

The large female leads you back behind the statue. "You are back from the dying world, yes? It has not been long, or it has not felt like long. Your war is still going on."

> "Yes, so if you want me to uphold my promise, I have to survive it first. I need all you know about war."
> "Yes. I missed you. It's good to have something sort of like a family."

"Yes, so if you want me to uphold my promise, I have to survive it first. I need all you know about war."

The huge female takes you back to a stockpile of rocks, wet clay, and silver. She tells you all she can remember about the last war, the one just before the flood. The humans had mastered the craft of monster-making, along with other strong magic, and they led several expeditions to the great cedar forest that was the home of the gods, bringing the gods one petition after another. One kingdom even dared to build a colony at the edge of the forest, only to have another kingdom seize it. Then the centaurs got involved, then the lammasus, and the scorpions harried the highways and supply lines for a long time, hunting at every opportunity. The gods created the great monster Humbaba to drive everyone back from the forest, then the even greater monster Pazuzu destroyed the humans' homes so they had no choice but to continue the war. When the din had reached an apex, the god Enlil started a petition to kill all the humans, and the petition was accepted. Somehow some humans must have survived, though. The woman shows each battle she remembers, with scratches on sheets of clay and tokens made of earth and silver. She was quite busy during this time, apparently.

"What can you tell me about Pazuzu? What kind of monster is he? I heard about him before, but it was from a crazy woman."

"You don't have to betray Tiamat to be free, I will free you"

She shakes her head and gives you a sad smile. "If only I could believe that. First survive this war of yours, little one. Then perhaps I will dare to put all my hope in you."

The large female leads you through her small following to a smaller but older-looking female, praying by herself. She explains that her purpose is to make sure that her people remain a single people, to prevent them from killing each other. When she sticks you with her venom, there is no pain, nor any other kind of sensation. It's like water.

You wake up in the middle of the night in your burrow.

You nod back off to sleep. The dreams you have for the rest of the night are more ordinary and restful. You're playing in the pyramid with Nakurtum, but you're a human girl. Nobody expects anything of you...

When the call rises to wake up and get moving, it still seems awfully early. The forces must be taking shorter rests than normal in their haste to get to the city. You want to find Nakurtum or Ninlil, but you just can't find the time to do it before you're on the march again.

Before joining the march, you dig around the camping supplies and find a jar with a narrow opening sealed with wax. That'll do. You pry the seal open a little to smell that there's some kind of strong liquor inside. You take stock of where it is and reseal the jar as best you can. Maybe you won't have to make yourself bleed again. Maybe it'll happen on its own soon.

Toward late afternoon, you start coming across small settlements and farmsteads, all abandoned. Oders seem to be to loot them quickly, tear things down that are relatively easy to tear down, and capture any survivors. The charioteers and Soul-of-Lightning usually get to them first.

You join the Footmen who go out and search the area for loot. It's a little creepy to think that these places had people in them not too long ago, that they were warned about an advancing army and fled in haste. You don't find anything of great value - they probably never had anything that valuable to begin with - but you find a few miscellaneous household items, a flint knife, and some stray goats out in a flood plain by the river. The men are also happy for your aid in pulling down lean-tos and knocking over huts.

"Aye-aye." You decide that you're going to just pretend that you're 13 now, even if you're a few days short. Maybe it'll make you braver. You prepare for the worst birthday ever.

Turtak is a considerable distance from the river, but there's a small canal leading from the river to what you assume must be the drain Ninurta-Nasir used to break into the city long ago. Your division heads there first, trying its best to keep just out of the range of any weapons the guards on the walls might have. Sure enough, the drain has been almost completely walled up, and a new guard tower stands just above it behind the city wall. You're too far away to see any distinct people up on the walls, but you're pretty sure they can see you. You ready your shield.

You hear a sound like rolling thunder, and clouds start condensing around the city from nothing, darkening the sunset sky. There's a sound like a shriek filling up the sky, and the clouds fight and spiral around the clear areas. The magicians on both sides are trying to seize control of the land and the surrounding weather. It gets pretty scary.

You close your eyes and lower your head. You know the Rain Priest will be calling out to Enlil, god of the air, and to Ea, god of fresh waters, but you decide to call out to dead Tiamat instead. Perhaps something you saw in your dreams made you admire her strength, or at least the strength of her followers. The strange peacemeal storm intensifies. The sky groans. This is the Rain Priest doing his work, not gently to help the crops, but fiercely to seize control of a battlefield.

Sharo and the men around you pray to more typical gods, like Ninurta, or Enlil, or Anu. But you feel strong in yourself, strong enough to withstand the ages of the world and not change. You imagine what Tiamat might think of you, the last of her children. You imagine that perhaps she likes you.

Some bolts of lightning strike the walls of Turtak, perhaps frying a few sentries. The sky still groans and shrieks. Flaming arrows and blood-conjured beasts fly from the walls. You think you're out of their range, but you still raise your shields. Four lammasus take wing and survey Ligish's army. Orange glowing light flickers in the air, perhaps the clash of magic between the Bronze Priest and the defenders of the walls. Even from so far away, you hear Ninlil challenge them.

> "Rally to that roar, men! Let's hunt some lammasus."

"Rally to that roar, men! Let's hunt some lammasus."

You rush to where the lammasus are circling around the archers and blocking their arrows with magic. One lammasu has slowed and is lowering itself. It must have fallen under the influence of Ninlil's roar.

I should probably add these to the list of characters:
Enlil: Air and storms. A leader of gods. Very Zeus-ish. Started the Great Flood.
Anu: The highest heaven. Called father of them all, but usually not highest in authority.
Shamash: Justice and the positive aspects of the sun. Judges even the other gods.
Aruru: Life. Creator of humans.
Sin: The moon and vigilance against evil
Ereshkigal: The dead
Nergal: The hot dry season, manhunters, and the negative aspects of the sun. Consort of Ereshkigal.
Ninurta: Beast hunters and honorable warfare.
Ishtar: Sex and total war.
Tammuz: Rebirth. Husband to Ishtar.
Ea: Earth and fresh water.
Tiamat: Salt water. Mother of monsters. Killed by Marduk.
Apsu: Former consort to Tiamat and primal god of fresh water. Dead.
Marduk: Kingship and heroism. Not universally worshiped, because the cities that worship him are very antagonistic against the ones that hold other gods higher.

There are a lot of other gods, like some spouses to the aforementioned gods and some lesser gods like Ninsun, but these are the big ones.

Ninlil does well. She keeps using her unnaturally compelling roar to keep it distracted until you pounce on it from behind and clutch at it with your deadly claws. The other lammasus panic and pummel you, the archers, and their comrade alike with blasts of force. The archers shoot volleys up at them and manage to get some good shots in before they can coordinate their magic.

The lammasu you've grounded, which isn't the same one who's been making your life hell, kicks at you with his hooves and turns its blood into daggers that shoot out at you from the wounds you've made.

You strike it with your stinger. It blocks you with a wave of force, but you keep stabbing at other spots at its body until it fails to anticipate you, and you stinger hits home, Now that it's been envenomed, you let go of it and give it a blunt swat with your claw. It struggles to flee and take to the air again. One of the lammasus has been struck by three arrows and is likewise retreating, bleeding onto the earth far below it. The lammasu you want is still attacking the archers, though. It crushes them with force blasts and sets some of their bows on fire to force them to disarm. Ninlil is about to yell something else at it, but it starts strangling her with a noose of orange energy. It flaps and hovers low to the ground to remain in range, but it's still a bit high for you to reach it by jumping. Ninlil's front legs rise off the ground, and she mutely struggles to free herself.

You remember the grapnel tied to a loop in your armor, the one the smith made for you. Right when the archers rally and fire another volley using the bows they have left, you circle behind that stupid lammasu, charge it, leap, and throw your grapnel at it. Sure enough, it's using all its magic to block arrows in front of it, and your thrown weapon can hit home.

> Grapnels are tricky. Roll 2d6 for Favor of the Gods to see whether you latch onto it or whether it just strikes the lammasu with the wrong end. Either way, you rolled well enough to hit.

You drop the tether and take up your spear and barbed glaive. You charge right back at the lammasu with a loud hiss as your battle cry. The lammasu creates an envelope of force around itself, but its magic is beginning to be exhausted. You slam into the invisible wall, break through it, and slam into the lammasu itself. Your bloodlust gets the better of you. "How do you like that, you cunt?! Can you still feel? Can you feel me eating you?" For a while he flails and kicks like a cornered animal, but he can't survice having too much of his flesh torn out of the gash in his neck and stuffed down your gullet. The thrill of the hunt fills you. That remark the dead scorpion-woman made days ago about how your soul is no longer fully human rings much more true now than it did at the time. You are blind to the world outside your kill for an indeterminate length of time, until Ninlil using her roar of compulsion to snap you out of it. "HUNZUU! GET UP RIGHT NOW!"

You get up right then. Ninlil keeps roaring just to be heard. "YOUR MEN ALL WENT BACK TO THAT SPOT BY THE CANAL! I THINK MY BOSS IS DEAD! WHAT DO WE DO?!" Questions don't suit her roar as well as commands do, you think.

You nod and wipe the blood off your mouth. "Thank you, Ninlil. I shouldn't have done that. I'd better go help the Footmen. You can come, too, if they ton't tell you something else to do."

The bald man, who looks much less fancy when caked in dirt and blood, steps in, out of breath. "They're still casting spells. I don't know what's going on! We have to find the king." Ninlil decides to follow them. "Be safe, Hunzuu! And thank you for saving me!" She hugs you tight.

As you catch up to Sharo and the Footmen, you see that many monsters now leer down from the guard tower above the reinforced drain. The king had tried to send in some sappers protected by shield walls to enter the sewers, but it wasn't enough.

Even worse, the magic storm around the city is getting darker and louder. Occasionally dry lightning strikes outside the city walls. The earth groans to join the pained noises in the sky. In retailiation, the land belches up blight demons, creatures with shaggy hides like wet peat, bodies like wolves, and heads like locusts with great spiked chewing mandibles. They're all around you.

> Run right into the skirmish. Roll 6d6.
> First ask Sharo or another soldier what these things are and how to kill them.

Don't worry, anything that's just way too far off the deep end, like randomly killing a friend, will not be considered.
>>

let's ask a soldier what we should be doing and how to kill those things.

Kill our way to a wall and destroy it? That plan, but with the sewer instead of a wall? Cmon man, give the monster an attack order.

Some soldiers bunch up into groups to shield each other's backs and hack at the blight demons, including Sharo. You run to him, swatting aside blight demons as you go and tearing apart the ones that are too tenacious to stay gone. With a loud hiss, you drive away the pack that had started to circle around Sharo's unit, expertly corner them on the edge of the canal, and tear them open in a shower of silty black ichor and brittle bones. Some of the bodies fall into the canal and collapse into dark wet messes.

You hear another voice emerging from a pile of dead sappers. It's Ninurta-Nasir. "Killer! Where the hell did you go?! We got slaughtered! We can't let these fuckers drive us back! Get back to the wall and bust open that weak spot where the drain was!"

You see that that would put you well within range of the archers and wizards on the city walls. Some of them are trying to take potshots at you even now.

> Do it. Roll 4d6 to bust some wall and hope not to get hit
> Ask for reinforcements.
> Pretend you didn't hear him and keep killing blight demons. There are still several snapping at other groups of footmen, after all.

If we do try to bust the wall I suggest we swap out the Spear/Glaive for a pair of shields we can use to protect our head and part of our body.

We should try to break up the largest group of demons, pick up a couple people with shields to ride on us then rush the wall.

Maybe he's right this time. Without a word of protest, you rush toward the walls of Turtak. Ninurta-Nasir keeps moving away from the walls but orders the men to draw slings and try to distract the enemy archers.

Many bronze-tipped arrows bounce off your shield and your thick scorpion barding. Even when they hot your armored spots, the impact is hard and intimidating.

You take a deep breath with both your human and scorpion halves. The wall draws near. You know you can do this. You know you're better than walls.

As you pound at the mud bricks and mortar with your claws, chipping away a little at a time, you keep your shield raised against the stones they're dropping on you. Suddenly, you hear buzzing insects approach. They're made of blood, like the kind Pazur-Ea used against the mole-woman, and they're trying to go for your face.

> Drop your glaive and try to swat them. Roll 1d6.
> Ignore them. They couldn't do that much damage. Just put your whole attention into knocking over this wall. Roll 4d6.

You close your eyes and try not to let the insect stings get to you as you slam and tear at the wall. You hear many rocks and chunks of masonry strike the earth around you. Then something softer hits the earth - probably a soldier fallen off the wall. You can't tell. The biting and stinging blood-firms hurt you, but maybe they're like the bites and stings of lesser insects, you hope, maybe they don't do any serious damage.

Fortunately, your hope proves correct. The antivenom in your system prevents the stings from getting to serious.

> The insects are neutralized, and so is the antivenom in your body. Thanks, dead scorpion lady!

You hear a hard crack. When you eagerly tear away more bricks, the whole addition to the wall collapses. Behind it is the hollow area where water is supposed to drain in from the canal. It's dark, but there should be room for you to squeeze into, with some other men behind you.

> Roll 2d6 to dodge the bricks falling onto you.
> Yell something out to the men

Some bricks fall on you, some sharp corners cut your skin and bruise your tail, and you have to emerge from a pile of rubble and dust to call out to the Footmen. "I did it! Come get in!"

> You now have 3 wounds.

Some brave Footmen take shelter under each other's shields as they run toward the breach in the wall as a group. Ninurta-Nasir and the rest keep slinging stones at the walls until you're all safely inside the opening, then he sends some troops to finish the blight demons and head for the king to give him the news.

You crawl into the dark tunnel, deeply enough to let the other men take shelter behind you, but soon you come to a pair of metal grates. You start working on tearing them open. This is a little easier because you're not being shot at.

>Go into the sewers with the men
> "I'm all cut up. I have to get back to the Petty-Wizards for healing. Can you guys hold this opening, or go in ahead of me?"

Mainly becaue we won't be able to go back for healing. The losses will be high, though.
>>
>>29101991
so... we broke the sewer walls? and not the main city walls?

Let's cause some havok before we go back for healing. Dig under some walls, or dig a tunnel back to our camp. Depending on how dig we are.

"I'm all cut up. I have to get back to the Petty-Wizards for healing. Can you guys hold this opening, or go in ahead of me?"

One Footman takes off his helmet in the darkness. It's Sharo. "Of course! They may know we're coming, but we'll fight our way through! We can do much more damage inside the walls than out. Go with Ninurta's blessing, Hunzuu. We will meet again."

>>29102030
You are moderately dig, but you always run the risk that anything you dig under will collapse on you, unless you're guided by an expert in engineering and warcraft. So far you've only dug nice little burrows in soft earth.

With a shield in each arm and your glaive strapped to your back, you flee out of the breach and out of range of the wall's defenders. There are fewer than there were moments before. Surely they are spreading the word of what you've done. You flee to where Ligish's forces are strongest, to find rest and healing. Far above you, the unnatural grey-green storm colors the city below. You wonder what it used to look like when Pazuzu cast his shadow over a city.
