Seated in a fifth chair pulled up to the hunters' small kitchen table, you join them for a meal of fruit, eggs, and salted bacon, savoring tastes different from those of the food in your home village; once you begin eating, though, you finally grow aware of your own soreness, of throbbing bruises and scrapes from days past that you're not sure you remember receiving.

You begin to grow a bit lightheaded, but are pulled back to reality by the touch of a large hand on your shoulder. Grato looks over from the seat next to you, a tear in his uniform opening to a bandaged wound where the drake swiped at him. “Eat, boy. You want to keep your energy up, don't you?”

“He's right.” Rebecca adds. “It'll speed the healing process.”

The conversation stalls, before Daeron speaks. “So, what are we going to do now?”

“Like I said earlier, taking a couple of days off sounds reasonable.” Rebecca responds. “I imagine we could use a little bit of recovery time, and we've got the coin to fall back on. After that, if the city doesn't have anything for us to do, we'll just go back to hunting and peddling for a while, maybe take a trip out west.”

“Ah, great. Sounds like we're gonna be working our way back up the ladder. If only we'd found something in the forest, other than a... spirit dragon.” At that, Daeron gives you a confused look as if expecting confirmation, then sighs.

“Yeah!” Sonia shouts, accenting her statement by banging her fists on the table. “It's all Grato's fault! Making us go out there for nothing...”

“Like it matters to him.” Daeron shrugs. “All he cares about is 'the thrill of the hunt', right?”

“Least I care about -something-, boy.” Grato nonchalantly responds. “If you think—“

“Hey.” Rebecca raises her voice, clearly fighting to remain calm. “It's nobody's fault, so stop arguing. Sorry about that, Erick.”

“...No problem.” You nod, continuing your meal. Strange bunch.

“I'd like to see the city later, if it's not a problem.” You say, swallowing a mouthful of egg.

“Sure,” Rebecca says, “One of us can show you around later. We owe you more than that.”

“How much do houses here cost?” You ask. With your ability, you doubt you'd have trouble making enough wealth to be self-sufficient.

“Depends.” Daeron says. “This place was cheap, but it was a fixer-upper, and we bought in years ago. Land's going up, as you might imagine. Why's that? You looking to make a home?”

“Maybe. Actually, I was wondering if it'd be possible for us to work together, at least for a little while.” You nod, looking over at Rebecca. “You said yourself you felt guilty, knowing what you're putting to waste when my trade exists.”

“I suppose you're right.” She responds.

“I can join you on your hunts, and capture Soul from the beasts we encounter, then empower items with them to create the sought-after relics you said occasionally turn up in the market here.” You say—you're pretty sure that's how it'd work, anyway.

“And we'd make a fortune...” The bowman's eyes light up. “Hunting is lucrative, but there's so much more to be had...”

“Quit drooling.” Rebecca glares at Daeron, then looks back over at you. “You've yet to disappoint us, Erick, so I suppose we'll give it a try. Once we're back on our feet, you can come out with us and see how things go.”

Breakfast finished, you return to the front room of the building, taking a moment to assess the new infusions on your equipment. Rebecca urges you to let her know if you need anything—the four hunters then return to business as usual, with Grato retiring to his room to polish his axe and assess the damage to his equipment, and Sonia sticking around to clean the kitchen.

They would!

According to your knowledge, anyway.

As long as the power of the item doesn't have to be brought out by communication between the user and the Soul within, or isn't reliant on a pact with a Spirit, anyone should be able to take advantage of a Shard infusion.
>>
>>29135228
All right then. Let's talk to someone about seeing the city. The loudout we've currently got is fine for now; our poisoned knife is easily concealable, and
I don't think anybody in this city has seen clothes/armor with shards in them (have they?), so we might be able to pass them off as just fancy clothing.
>>

Might want to update your twitter with this thread. I initially assumed something came up until I decided to check the catalog.

“Daeron.” You knock on the door to the hunter's room, and it cracks about halfway before long.

“Yes?” He sticks his head out to greet you, messy brown hair tossed back over his head in a sleepy halo.

“I've noticed you and Rebecca don't have empowered weapons like Grato's.” You suggest. “At some point in the future, I believe it'd be possible for me to change that, provided I could find a suitable Soul, and for a nominal fee.”

“Already looking for business, huh?” He rolls his eyes. “I bet it's no sweat for you when it comes to the actual process, but I'm down as long as you're not trying to empty my wallet. I don't know anything about all these... spirits and souls and dragons and junk, but if it's anything like his... lunar... death... razor, then count me in.”

>>29135387

You shrug, making your way back into the hall. As far as traversing the city goes, you believe you could pass any of your equipment off as fancy, artisan clothing; you're a traveler anyway, so you suppose people would buy the fact that it's not made anywhere near here. Your knife, Venom Fang, is much more concealable and accessible than Scourge, the halberd that looked more like a black scar in reality—it seems reasonable, then, to simply leave your halberd here at the lodge while you're on the town.

We can pick up some other stuff while we're out in the city, gloves, a mask, a mirror, maybe some one handed weapons like a sword and axe, a robe, a bow perhaps, though we can always fiddle with Daeron's bow instead. Other stuff for experimentation.

“Sonia.” You make your way into the kitchen right as she finishes cleaning. You're not sure if the girl will prove particularly reliable, but the others seem busy. “Mind showing me around Callestria before it gets too late?”

“Oh, uh, sure!” She darts back to her room, and you hear shuffling from inside before she emerges at her characteristic high speed, covered by her familiar cloak. “You couldn't have picked a better guide! We'll be back, everyone!”

“Wait, what?” Rebecca and Daeron glance out of their rooms, shooting confused glances as the girl grabs you by the wrist and sprints clear of the door, sending you stumbling forward with her.

“Our place is a little bit behind Callestria proper, see.” The hunters' building appears to be located off-center in a park-like residential area, with other similar places situated around the area, suitably distanced from one another. You're guided along a cobble road to a short stone staircase, leading up toward a city gate, though not the one you recall seeing on your weary journey—probably a smaller back entrance, or one to a private residential area. As you enter the city, you get a sense of its construction; surrounded by hills, and divided from the world beyond by great walls of white stone built into those hills.

You aren't quite used to the sights, of a place so densely populated, or of seeing so many unfamiliar people all at once. Men, women, and children—families, and individuals, make their way up and down the streets, or loiter around fountains and converse with one another on benches. The wheels of passing merchants' wagons rumble against paved cobble roads; city guards patrol the streets with shield in hand and sword at their side, dressed in chain mail and colors of blue, red, and gold. Metal lanterns sit along the sides of the streets, each one equidistant from the last; though it's about noon now, you imagine they're lit each night.

“Our great, though humble city is structured around these three major streets! What were they called, again?” Your tour guide leaps onto a stack of wooden crates outside a small building; through the window, you can see a man inside shouting and waving a hand at her. “Crown Street, which runs through the city's center, is home to our government, as well as the museum, the mail...”

“Ash Street, which goes furthest to the west, is where you'll find some of the city's bigger neighborhoods. Rebecca says that's where some of the warehouses are. Also, that it's dangerous at night!” She trails off, leaping down from her perch as you continue speed-walking to match her pace. Gliding to the left and right to avoid collisions with the passerby, she continues, frowning. “Daeron always talks about a place there that he says I'm not old enough to go to.”

“Makes sense...” You say, attempting to keep pace. “Sorry, I'm not used to a place like this.”

“It's great, isn't it?” She responds. “Finally, we've got... uh...”

“Sapphire street?” You say, gesturing to a nearby sign.

“Oh, yeah.” She shoots you a nervous smile, walking backwards down the street. “I'm, uh, not so good with reading sometimes.”

You roll your eyes. “I guess this is the merchant district, then?”

“You're absolutely right! You catch on quicker than I did.” She continues down the road. “Vendor stalls, tailors, blacksmiths, grocers, bakers, all those crooked types. Can't trust 'em a bit, y'know!”

“Right.” You nod.

As the two of you come to an open area amidst the merchant district, she shoots you a confident grin, hopping onto the rim of a fountain and folding her arms. “Had enough?”

It'll help us get a better idea of how common they are and how expensive they are if we check with this person, and hey, it might be fun.

I think we could use a pair of gloves and mask, not too hard to find. So if we see them on the way we can ask Sonia to pick them up, nothing expensive, or we can just remember where they were.

Also chat with Sonia, ask her who is in charge of Callestria and who usually hires them for monster hunting stuff. Also tell her that she might have the potential to become a Shardkeeper, and that if she's interested we could try and teach her. Make sure she knows that it's not an easy profession, that it requires a lot of learning and studying.

“Show me where Grato got his weapon.” You say.

“Oh, that place? I don't remember where it is...” She drops into a sitting position on the edge of the fountain, thinking. Maybe it might have been more favorable to bring someone else along after all? “I think, over there? Yeah!”

“This is the place!” She leads you meandering in circles around Sapphire Street for several minutes, until finally deciding on a shop. You cock an eyebrow, as from the building next door, appearing a bit more decorated even from the outside, you feel a presence of Soul.

“You sure it's not that one?” You ask, pointing at the other shop.

“...Maybe you're right.”

You lead the way, and the two of you enter—a small silver bell rings overhead, though no one comes to your service immediately. It's a strange, rustic looking place, that doesn't appear to specialize in a particular merchandise. You see books, various baubles, items that look like they could be antiques—you turn, nearly bumping into a golden birdcage that hangs next to a rack of ornate walking sticks. Only one or two other customers are present; they meander around the store, pausing to assess the merchandise or read one of the thick books.

The presence of Soul flares up as you enter, slightly, and you look for its source. In a glass case behind the counter rests a Shard, which radiates a strange sylvan feeling. It's not the only presence in the room, but you can't place the other.

“Something wrong, Erick?” Sonia asks.

“It's nothing.” You shake your head.

“Welcome, welcome!” From behind the counter, the shopkeeper waves, and you slowly approach the counter, Sonia tagging along. He's dressed elaborately, wearing a long-white cape—lined with fur where it meets his neck—over high-quality silken clothing. His hair is long, a discolored yellow-brown, and a pair of thin-framed glasses sit low on his nose. “Might I say that's quite an exquisite cloak you've got on today.”

“Thanks!” Sonia nods. “It's fr—“

You search the store for a bit, the back of your mind locked onto the other presence—all you can place, though, is the one of the Shard behind the counter. The object gives off a soft ray of light through the glass case, reminiscent of sunlight.

You inquire about several of the knick-knacks in the store, to avoid suspicion—you think Sonia gets the idea, or is just intrigued by the merchandise, as she eventually begins to assist you, ending up with the shopkeeper summarizing a couple of books for her before returning to his position behind the counter. There's a few things that might be useful; you did catch a nice pair of decorated leather gloves, but there's nothing you couldn't find somewhere else, and more importantly, nothing else that contains the power of Soul.

“Let's see... I think that's about everything I had my eye on—ah, though that's an interesting stone you've got over there.” You point to the Shard. “What is it?”

“Ah, I'm glad you asked. You've excellent taste.” His exasperated look turns to a grin. “It's an artifact recovered from a dig site to the west. Our literature suggests that stones like these were used, long ago, to capture the souls of ancient creatures. It's a must have if you're a researcher, historian—or are just in search of a nice conversation piece for the mantle. Interested in buying?”

The dude obviously knows his wares and he certainly knows its worth. There is no point in downplaying it. Also seeing as how ours is a dead art, it would probably be easier to just go and kill a beast than to buy one's gem for us.

If he's this rich of a merchant then the throwing him off will only do so much...and he likely already knows what we are anyway. Still, best to keep up appearances.

“It certainly is interesting, though I've heard tales of such things, and don't put much stock in them.” You suggest, and he gives an understanding nod. “It's quite pretty, though. May I take a closer look at it?”

“I understand your perspective. Though based on what I've seen, I believe such stories are legitimate. Such gems have crossed my path before, as well. They give off an unearthly light, evident of the ancient power within, and they're made of a robust material unlike any naturally occuring crystal, that cannot be easily broken or cracked... though I'm afraid I can't let you test that, as we've a strict policy.”

“Erick, we've got plenty of money, so I'm sure we can afford it.” Sonia looks at the shopkeeper. “How much are we talking, here?”

The man raises an eyebrow at her, then scribbles something onto a small piece of paper, folding it and sliding it across the countertop to her. She opens it, and gives a disturbed double-take before looking back up at you, whispering hoarsely. “Never mind, we're broke.”

“Here. Why not have a look for yourself?” The man lifts the case and gently recovers the item; it's smaller and somewhat more cleanly cut than the Shards you've worked with thus far, a somewhat jagged fist-sized gem. He sets it on the glass counter in front of you.

As you reach toward the gem, you attempt to establish mental contact with the poison spirit. “Skeith, are you there?”

”What is it, Shardkeeper?”

“Think you could lend me some of your poison, if I need it?” You ask. “I have a feeling this shopkeeper is a little more than he's letting on.”

”A man who would peddle the power of Spirits to any traveler with the coin—who would put this world at risk of repeating its great catastrophe? Do you believe that I would hesitate to assist you?” Obscured by your cloak, the Venom Fang vibrates at your hip, prompting a worried look from Sonia. Your head throbs, as the Spirit's voice grows immeasurably loud, filling your ears from all directions and echoing through your skull. ”No, Shardkeeper. Speak the word, and I will turn this building to dust.”

You reach down and touch the Shard, attempting to inconspicuously focus on the energy within. You do not see the image of a creature or spirit, nor do you hear a voice—however, the Soul within fills you with a strange feeling of hollowness, though tranquil. It is a feeling like lying alone in a windy forest grove, warmed by the sun overhead; it is a powerful feeling, that blanks your very thoughts momentarily. ”...This is familiar to me, somehow... I do not like it.”

The salesman looks at you with a smile as you clear your head, continuing to look over the Shard. “Beautiful, isn't it? Is it to your liking?”

Earthquake boots all day every day. I think snack skin cloak is less noticeable than stone scale cloak.

But, the fast dagger is way better for wondering around town. We'll change back when adventuring.

“It's beautiful. I wonder how old it is.” You say.

“Things like these, perhaps in the neighborhood of centuries.” He responds. You set the Shard back onto the counter, and he goes to work returning it to its case.

“It's very much to my liking,” You suggest, “But I haven't the currency to buy it at the moment. I might return, though, if I have the money, or perhaps something I could trade.”

“I deal primarily in artifacts.” He responds. “You know, bits of civilizations past, and relics of the old world—things that belong in the museum, or didn't quite make it there. Please, do come again.”

You and Sonia exit the store, and she looks up at you as you make your way down the short stairs to the cobble road. “Sorry I couldn't pay for it.”

“Don't trouble yourself. If it's important enough, I'll find a way to get it.” You respond. The district is as busy as ever, with plenty of time left in the day.

After a while of meandering about with Sonia, you're guided to a weaponsmith's building; here, weapons, armor, and Callestria's finest martial crafts are made before being moved out to various stores and buyers. Empty racks are visible around the store, and in the center of the floor, a middle-aged man operates an ancient-looking sharpening wheel, switching between it and various other tools at his disposal to maintain a knife with intricate patterns carved into the blade.

“Greetings.” The man looks up at you from his stool; wearing a tattered grey shirt, he's tall and heavily built, with wavy, light-brown hair that greys around the roots. “Need something?”

“I'm looking for a bow.” You say.

“Just one, but you might not want it.” He makes his way over to a shelf, pulling down a simple-looking wooden recurve bow. We figured out that it's oddly more powerful than it should be for the strength of soul that we sense in it. Seems pretty important, and I was suggesting we do that once we're back and done talking with Skeith.

You take out your newly gained recurve bow, readying an arrow and aiming it about—it seems stable, and sturdy despite the damage. Sonia directs you to what you assume is Daeron's archery target, out back of the house—a piece of canvas over wood, with a crudely painted target, riddled with holes. It's been a while since you've used a bow; you loose the arrow, and it flies a bit off-center, hitting the canvas but missing the mark.

Was it your shot, or the weapon? You produce another arrow, shooting again and again until you get a feel for it, hitting a pair of consecutive bullseyes. It takes the energy of the shot a bit more efficiently than the bows you've used in the past, but the wear around the grip does make it a bit awkward to aim.

“Not bad.” Sonia suggests.

“Thanks. Hey, back there in the shop, did you feel anything odd going on?”

Though they're all pretty much the same, I prefer this one.

It'd be possible to perform some sort of test, though you're not sure what; you could attempt to see if she could discern the nature of a Soul within an unbound Shard, or even communicate with Skeith.

>>29141470

“You could sense its anger, couldn't you?” You ask, and she nods. “Most wouldn't have felt a thing. I get the feeling you might be able to do what I do, with some training. I'm not sure, though... Truth be told, I'm not as good at this kind of stuff as my master was.”

“I think you're doing just fine... But you really think I can?” She responds, eyes full of wonder. “Wow... I'd like to learn, but I can't imagine I'd be good at it. I could never study and practice all the time, too... It seems like a lot of work, and it doesn't sound like you're too sure yourself!”

“Right. I can't make any promises, and I'll have to figure it out.” She has a point—the prospect of taking on an apprentice does seem like a lot, especially when you haven't figured it all out yourself. “Do you think you'd at least like to give it a try?”

“Seems like you're really set on this.” Sonia nods. “Alright, I'll do it.”

“Alright, then. Later, we'll figure out if you've got the necessary affinity.”

What will you do?
>Dismiss Sonia and call upon Skeith.
>Perform some Soul ritual.

We'll talk to her later, for now we should get some answers from Skeith.

Also think back to our old lessons, try to remember how the basics work.

Ask him if he would talk to Sonia while we're at it. We wouldn't want it to backfire if we do use him as a test.

“Sonia, mind going inside for now?” You ask. “I've got something I need to do.”

“Alright!” She waves, darting back around the building towards the front door. “See you later!”

She disappears around the corner, and before you can even completely call out the Spirit, the weapon at your hip vibrates. You feel a sudden displacement of the Soul; the grass in front of you turns dark, and begins to melt into a patch of black, bubbling oil. An amorphous blob rises from the liquid, with great swaths of darkness dripping away from it until it takes a familar humanoid form, two green eyes and a twisted smile folding open in front of you.

“What is it?” You ask, as Skeith takes form; you'd rather not have him talk to you so aggressively. “Something to do with the Shardkeepers not being around anymore, right? I don't see how I could know anything more than that.”

“Shardkeeper.” The Spirit's tone is no less sinister than ever. “The people you have encountered each have their own knowledge and theories of spirits and Soul, but does it bother you in the least that no one south of your home town seems to know that your craft ever even existed?”

>What will you say?
>>
>>29142033
>>What will you say?

"Sort of. Do you have an explanation?"
>>
>>29142033
"I assume that some sort of disaster befell the civilization that created my art."
>>
>>29142033

"It does seem...odd, now that you've mentioned it. What are you suggesting?"
>>
>>29142033
"Let me make a guess, Spirit: My people's hubris lead to us creating soul weapons by the millions, arming our armies, and the resulting arms race lead to our near extinction and loss of the Art."
>>
>>29142033
Yes. Between that and the drake presence earlier, I've started thinking that something has hunted down Shardkeepers.
>>
>>29142033
Boom! Skeith summons just like that. Now we can throw poison spirits at people.
>>
>>29142070
good enough but I wouldn't say millions.
>>
>>29142033
"I thought it odd, I reasoned that Shardkeepers were either eliminated by something hunting them, or there was no small amount of hubris involved and they either destroyed themselves with Soul imbued weapons or somehow brought about an apocalypse or a retaliation from the natural world through their creations.

I wouldn't be surprised if the 'dragon' that we fought was tasked to hunt down Shardkeepers."

>>29142052
>>29142047

“I assume that some sort of disaster befell the civilization that created my art.” You say.

“You are correct, though not entirely.” The Spirit pulls its legs free of the earth, and you recall its height, its spindly body towering above you.

“Do you have an explanation, then?”

“The manipulators of Soul were numerous, centuries ago. Those that gave birth to Shardkeeping quickly expanded their repertoire of techniques and rituals, as they sought to further augment the power of themselves and their people with Soul.” It continues. “It should not surprise you that after the secrets of Shardkeeping spread beyond their progenitors, many different types of people took advantage of the art. Some wished to preserve the balance of nature, while some wished to preserve humanity; some desired wealth, or great power above all else. The rampant use of Soul caused backlash from the natural world, and some Spirits even sought the destruction of the Shardkeepers...”

“Was it this retaliation that eliminated them?” You ask. “Did something hunt them down?”

“...But this was not the disaster I spoke of.” The Spirit chuckles.

“Then what was it?”

>>29142477

“As the practice of Soul-binding began to run rampant, soon did the use of Shard-infused tools and weaponry. When conflict arose between civilizations, wars were fought, and warriors then used these tools to bolster their offensive and defensive power.”

>>29142070
>>29142139

“We armed our armies with Soul weapons, and the arms race lead to our near extinction, and the loss of the art.” You ponder aloud.

“Yes.” Skeith hisses. “And as the masters of your art emerged, Shardkeepers first joined armies—then, took the place of armies, with the souls of legendary beasts and spirits of unimaginable power serving as their squadrons. With powers like ours at their disposal, an ordinary man on the battlefield would simply get in the way. Tell me, Shardkeeper. Do you believe yourself to be powerful?"

“Not in comparison to my Master.” You respond.

“Callestria is the largest city you've seen in your life, is it not?” Skeith asks, his luminescent mouth twisting into a wide smile. “Were you to fight a Shardkeeper, equally skilled as yourself, with each of you aiming to kill the other? That alone could cause enough damage to destroy this city. Shardkeepers fought one another. Shardkeepers fought Spirits. Armies fought Shardkeepers. Amidst it all, the world burned away, civilizations crumbled to dust. Your art, and much of your race's history, was lost.”

You tilt your head; you find it difficult to believe.

>What will you say?
>>
>>29142519
"Then I will make sure the art of the shardmaker remains an exotic, rare, and largely inconsequential thing."
>>
>>29142519
Sweet! This means we can still peddle shit as long as we dont make weapons or teach anyone how we make make stuff.
>>
>>29142519
"Then shardkeepers must grasp the responsibility all their power brings with both hands."
>>
>>29142519
"welp, time to tell Sonia she has no talent, and hoard the secrets of shardkeeping to myself"

Harbor inner suspicions that Skeith is lying to you and trying to prevent you from teaching shardkeeping, since he kinda hates your kind.
>>
>>29142519
>That would explain why you hate shardkeepers
>>
>>29142646
Good point.
>>
>>29142646

I don't think that is necessary, just we need to impose upon who ever we teach the importance of restraint. With great power comes great responsibility ect ect
>>
>>29142719
The quote marks mean I was talking to Skeith, not actually intending to follow through with what I said.
>>
>>29142519
"It is a grave responsibility. But a necessary one.

If humanity is to survive we need strength, ordinary men don't stand a chance against the monsters and the spirits of this world. It resulted in the downfall of civilizations, but those civilizations would never have existed without it."
>>
>>29142646
>>29142589
>>29142671

“That would explain why you hate Shardkeepers.” You say.

“I have many reasons for that, as I'm sure you're aware.” Skeith shakes his head. “But this? It was only natural that the practitioners of your craft would destroy themselves.”

“What, then, Skeith?” You ask. You get the feeling that he's lying; how far would the venom spirit go to prevent you from spreading knowledge of your art? “You're saying I should take hold of the responsibility this power brings, right? Are you trying to discourage me from teaching others my craft—should I hoard the secrets of Shardkeeping for myself?”

“It is not my place to attempt to change your path of action, Shardkeeper.” The Spirit responds, his body beginning to melt back into the oily patch he stands on. “That matters not to me. But having encountered a man who profits from the artifacts of Soul, and with you beginning to decide what you will do with your art in the future—who to share it with, how to profit from it? I wish only to illuminate you on the fate of your predecessors before you move on. Make of my tale what you will.”

The last of Skeith's inky form fades into the now-discolored grass, leaving a bitter stench on the wind. The power of Soul returns to the weapon at your hip, and you fold your arms with a sigh, leaning against the building at your back.

(( Calling it a night here, though I might stick around to answer a few questions this time. Sorry about the turnaround time these last couple of posts, by the way. I've been managing to consistently write myself to near-exhaustion during this thread as well as the previous few. As usual, thanks for the posts; I'll be archiving and updating Pastebin shortly. ))

>He says in the middle of a city that exists without spirit magic
>>
>>29142849
There's relic weaponry.

There's not enough to lead to widespread destruction, but there's enough magic weapons laying around that fighting monsters is a bit more even.
>>
>>29142873
Its a bit much to say that the city wouldn't exist without it though.
>>
yeah
>>29142777
is a pretty silly thing to say
>>
>>29142881
Skeith was kicked out of this area by a Shardkeeper a while back when he tried to set up shop. It would not be habitable without Shardkeeping.

And there are monsters and spirits that are tougher than Skeith wandering around.
>>
>>29142873
>>29143028
I think that if all of the magic weapons and items were to disappear forever humans would become much more scarce. I'm not say they would be in danger of extinction but equilibrium would favor spirits and giant magical beasts.
