It's not exactly difficult to track tanks. The signs are usually pretty obvious- turn up dirt, broken and crushed trees, flattened bushes. It's like trying to follow a herd of Elephants, if the elephants were thrice as wide, six times as heavy and had a hard time maneuvering to avoid anything smaller than a cabin.

You are Commander Russells of the M26E1 Pershing Heavy Tank "Black Jack" and, as easy as it is to find and follow their tracks, the going is slow, mainly because the Pershing is quite a bit wider that the Shermans you're following- there are many points where trees or other obstacles Kay's tanks fit between easily force you to squeeze or muscle through them as though you were forging a fresh path.

"At least Miho will have an easier time..." Richard says, gunning the engine as he pushes a log out of the way. The Panzer IV had taken up a rear positon- it had less armor if there was an ambush, and whatever path Jack made it could fit through easily. "God I hate underbrush..." The log finally shifts out of the way and Black Jack jumps forward for a moment before Richard reigns him in.

July 9, 1944
D-Day+3
Central Caen, Normandy

Bernie was scared.

The street was so narrow he couldn't turn around. The sky was dark and overcast from the recent storm, and Bernie could feel the fear of his crew and the supporting infantry. He wanted to comfort them, tell them his 17-pound cannon and thick armor could protect them...but he couldn't speak.

And even if he could, he wasn't sure he'd be telling the truth.

He had seen it twice now-the front vistas of apartment buildings, their interiors bombed out by the nightly raids, had been rigged to collapse by the Huns. Alphonse had screamed-a spectral cry of abject terror-as his hull crumpled under tons of stone. Barry hadn't even the time to speak, but at least his crew had survived. They were somewhere behind Bernie now, the sapper teams working feverishly to rescue the crew from the broken hulk that was once Bernie's friend.

Every crumbling block could be a prelude to a booby trap. Every tremor from the artillery could set off an avalance-and there was nothing Bernie could do about it. He was helpless to do nothing but trundle forward, a huge olive green target.

Bernie decided then. He HATED urban fighting.

The first warning he got was the signature 'CRACK' of a Kar98K rifle-probably fitted with a scope, Bernie thought- as one of the supporting infantrymen jerked and dropped, screaming as blood flowed from his destroyed kneecap. There was a call of 'sniper' and the infantry dove to cover. Bernie's commander, Captain Thomas, him stop, not wishing to advance further without the infantry to support him.

Bernie's engine thrummed with worry. Champion! Now he was not only a big green target, he was a STATIONARY one too. How could this get worse?!

He got his answer when the Huns revealed themselves at the top of the buildings around him.

Bernie screamed in a voice no one could hear. His 50-cal couldn't depress high enough. His cannon-that beautiful 17-pounder, the one they'd nearly torn his turret apart to fit, the gun he'd grown to love so much-couldn't angle that high. He could do nothing but backpedal away as good Englishmen were cut to ribbons by the Huns.

'You mustn't run away'. That was the mantra. They'd been dealing with Panzers, and the occasional Tiger, but also self-propelled guns and towed field guns. Nothing that Bernie couldn't handle. Nothing he couldn't fight.

He couldn't fight this. He found himself begging, pleading with whomever would, or could listen to let him be spared, let his crew survive. As the soldier with the Panzerschreck jumped into the window and leveled his weapon at the side of Bernie's turret, Bernie knew his request had gone unanswered. His friends were going to die.

Then there was a sound like thunder, a roar of fire, and he knew no more.

---
Bernie shuddered as he awoke from the memory. He cast his awareness around him, trying to find something of interest to distract him, to draw his attention away from the fact that this wasn't his original turret. He found the presence of his new commander, the short Japanese girl. Naomi. That was her name.

He focused on her. She was island of stability in the chaotic sea of Bernie's mind. He had seen so much. Africa, where he and his company had smashed Rommel's defenses at the battle of El Alamein-BOTH of them. Italy, where they had come ashore at Salerno to assist the beleagured invasion force against a heavy resistance. That was the first time Bernie had to fight in close quarters.

And then Normandy, where-no. Don't go there. you're a senshado tank now. You've got fiber linings and you get shot at with counter-penetrators. Your crew is safe. They're always safe.

Naomi turned her attention from the gun barrel to Bernie. As she did so, the Call of Kay sounded. Bernie knew it well-the Division Commander always announced herself when she entered the hangar. It was always a friendly greeting-not the sharp call to attention of a field general, but a warm-hearted 'hullo' to all who would listen.

Bernie listened. He liked to listen. It helped ease his old, tired mind.

"Naomi! How goes?" Said the Division Commander, making a beeline for Bernie and his gunner. "Big Bernie up to shape for the match today?"

"He is." Replied Naomi, in her typically blunt fashion. She was always like that, saying what needed to be said and no more. So much like Captain Thomas-

NO! Not there! Bernie shuddered again as the memory threatened to take him-

"What's wrong?" Kay said. Bernie stopped, the simple question piercing the icy waters around his thoughts. Naomi had fixed her gaze directly on a spot just behind the school logo on the right side of Bernie's turret-the spot where he had been shot over half a century ago.

"I don't know." Naomi said, her gaze lined with curiosity. "He just seems a bit off today."

"I thought you said he was ready." Kay's friendliness had given way to concern.

"He is. Treads are tight, gun is sighted, engine checks out. I don't know." Naomi reached out and placed a hand on the cold steel plate. "He just seems...off."

"What, do you think he needs a hug?" Kay said wryly. But she was only half-joking. Of all the tanks they owned, Bernie, their Firefly, had seen the most combat. He was also the only restored tank-the others were surplus, retired after the war, then bought by Saunders. Bernie had been knocked out, his crew killed. He had needed extensive repair to be returned to fighting shape.

Naomi shot a look at her commander, but said nothing. Bernie silently smiled. 'What a thing it is', he thought, 'for an old war horse like me to be cared for so well.' He decided then. He would give his absolute best for these girls-even in urban fighting.

"You're big," she murmured against his turret as she huddled near to it, the warmth from his engine exhaust making the turret seem hot compared to the air and ground around them. The crew huddled inside him, where it was warmer, but the short blonde had desired privacy and so had absconded to his exterior, where she now huddled.

"I want to be big so people take me seriously, but I'm not big like you yet." Give it time, dear one, he thought comfortingly at her, but remained, from inability to speak, silent. "Nonna is nice. She doesn't mind carrying me around on her shoulders to help me see more and be taller, but it doesn't compare to having my own height."

Well, his height had been manufactured, his weight a result of the armor, and while Katyusha'd never reach his height or weight, or come close to it, she dreamed. And he empathized with that. "I have a boyfriend, Vanya, did you know? He's very quiet, like you. And tall. And he carries me sometimes, but I don't mind, because he's very nice."

So, to his way of reading the situation, she couldn't date him, so she settled for the next best thing. Poor, poor girl. His thought process was shattered when his engine turned over and rumbled to full idle. "Katyusha, enemy spotted moving along the ridge!" With a scowl, she scrambled onto the top of his turret and then slid in, and he buckled down to make (semi)war.

You asked for a veteran of Caen. Caen was NOT a fun battle. The British lost 50,000 men over the course of a MONTH trying to take a city they'd planned to take in a day. Any tank that went into that was not coming out unscathed.

It was also an interesting exercise in the idea that tank spirits treat Senshado as both recreational and therapeutic-those who have had war and enjoyed it get to enjoy it more without the risk of death to friends and crew, and those who have had war and...not enjoyed it...get to learn to conquer their fears. By the time Black Jack sent a 90mm shell his way, I imagine Bernie was less 'please no not again' and back to the proper British 'well, darn'.

The trumpet blares its clarion call to advance, and you straighten your slouch hat, take a draw from your cigar, and shrug out of your bedroll, empty save for your Bible and a piece of hardtack you scrounged from a fellow dead Union soldier. "The 63rd New York will ahd-vaaaaaance!" The stern bellows of a senior sergeant were so comforting, you reflect, as you begin trotting forward, rifled musket held at the ready. All around you, your fellows do the same. Johnny Reb holds the ridge, you've heard from scuttlebutt, and Johnny Reb's artillery is Hellishly good. They're good at defending natural points, too, but damned if they ain't fought you yet.

The trumpet sounds the halt, and soon the sergeants are bellowing to fix files and reform ranks. Must be in shooting range then, but you can't hardly see shit. The order to ready and aim comes down. Technically, the manual of arms lists twenty-seven movements for loading and firing your weapon, but you've never cared for that. Men are dropping around you now, as you sight along your barrel at a dim shape in grey, powdersmoke drifting in and out of the way, but you keep steady. "Fire!" You pull the trigger and feel the kick against your shoulder, quietly swearing, before you drop the butt of your firearm and reach into your cartridge box.

"Disregard loading, damn your eyes! Fix bayonets and give them steel in their bellies! Faugh a ballagh!"

Jerking your bayonet from its scabbard, you echo the cry as you slot it into the lug and make sure its tight, before breaking out into a run forward. More men drop, and you hurtle over a fallen log. You're plucked backwards, however, by an umpire's hand on your coat. "Not so fast, young'in. You're dead."

"What? Bollocks! We're advancing! You can't make me sit out the ADVANCE!"
>>
>>29140109
"Rules of the field say I can, laddie. Pick up your musket and go get yourself something to drink." Swearing up a storm, you stand and slowly begin making your way back to the parking lot, while the rattle of musketry and booming of cannons continues to move farther away.

Slowly shucking out of your coat, you keep your boots, jeans, and hat on, because it's damned hot today. Your dad's napping in his camp chair, under an awning you rigged up on the truck for him. Tossing your coat at him to wake him up, you gentle place your musket, bayonet, and cartridge box in the back of the truck's cab, to go next to your Wehrmacht kit, Kar98k, and a Confederate cavalryman's kit. You reach into your dad's cooler and retrieve a Coke while he wakes up.

"They made you sit out the advance, huh?"

"Yessir. Stupid is what it is. That's three out of three weekends! First was when we were taking 'Warsaw', second was when we were charging at 'Honey Springs', and third was today. These umpires are shit."

"Condolences. I know how much fun you have on the advance. By the way, we're moving to Japan."

"Thanks. And why?"

"Work. Boeing wants me to help take care of their 747 fleet."

"I'll accept that. I won't be able to reenact, will I?"

"No, I'm afraid not, but I've already contacted their embassy and they said you'd be clear to help work on the tanks for whatever academy ship Boeing sticks you on."

"Shit."

Your father completes the rest of the drive in silence, as you chew on the end of a twig, thinking. Japan, huh? Well, you've lived worse places, Dubai included.

"How's it hanging back there, Anglerfish?" You call into the mic, popping up through the hatch to get a better view of the surroundings. Looking back you see Miho, doing the same with a pair of binoculars. Her gaze rotates to you and she drops the binocs and waves.

"Smooth." She says, waving up at you. "Mako's almost fallen asleep at the wheel twice now!" The Panzer IV begins to drift right before suddenly correcting. "Make that three times. It's not too hard moving over their tracks, is it?"

"Got five-hundred Detroit horses behind us." You brag. "Nothing a few shrubs are going to stop." Black Jack hits a particularly large "shrub" stopping suddenly before overpowering it. "See? American Muscle!"

"Have you noticed anything?" Miho finally says, looking around.

"Trees. Rocks. Leaves." You list off, looking around. "Squirrel."

"...Not that... more... something we haven't seen?" Miho says. "No rear guards, no scouts. If they were setting up an ambush, they'd want to know when we were coming, right?"

You're suddenly very uneasy.

Ask and Ye shall receive!
I was on day five of my week and a half December study trip to the Russian federation to study the history of the Soviet Union. My family had been somewhat put off by my choice to go abroad, in eighth grade. My grandfather and great grandfather had been forced out by the Russian Civil war before they settled in Montana (yes I get that joke a lot say it again and I’ll stick this sabre where the sun don’t shine), and my Father enlisted in the Army’s 7th Cavalry during the early 60’s “just to stick it to those Red Rats”, so tensions were… still present. I wanted to go because I wished to see the fields and steppes where my ancestors had ridden wildly and freely across in days of old… is what I told my parents. I actually just wanted to see the Kublikanya tank museum. My older brother does reenactments for the American Civil war, but I found a… fascination with the modern version of cavalry. I had managed, after several “tips” of vodka, to get in for a few hours even though the museum was “closed for special guests”. I was standing in front of an ISU-152 when I noticed a presence beside me. A girl, snow white skin, and raven black hair, with… good assets for someone her age, wearing a 1940’s Soviet Army uniform. I smiled and asked in my so-so Russian, “Why you come Kublikanya?” She kept starting at the ISU’s main gun and replied with perfect diction, “I have come to seek and requisition additional units for my school.” I blinked. Tankery was something I typically associated with restoring old wrecks or buying new. I reflexively responded in English, “You do Tankery, riding tanks?” She looked at me and replied, “Hai, although in Nippon, we call it: senshado-do.” I had to do a double take. Japanese, perfect Russian speech and uniform, understood English, and purchasing tanks from an esteemed military museum?
>>
>>29140845
I was a bit taken aback and said as much, to which the Japanese girl replied, “I am from Pravda High School, of Hokkaido. The museum recently extended to a select few people of note in senshado-do the opportunity to purchase tanks for their school. I am looking ahead for what units my commander would be most interested in.” I responded with an “hmm…” I remembered Pravda from runner up last year’s Nationals in Japan and being founded by old Communist party members from Russia, China, and Japan. I asked “what do you have already?” “10 T-34-76s, 3 T-34-85s, one IS-2 and one KV-2.” I nodded then said “ok, so you got plenty of mediums, so perhaps a one or two of these ‘Zveroboys’ might be what your commander is looking for. That way, you compliment your good mobile attacks with heavy armor and fire power, great assault units that will destroy anything they set their sights on.” I moved two tanks down, “And if we have the opportunity to buy from the museum, then the Object 704 would be an excellent choice: low, well sloped armor, and excellent Ml-20 152mm gun. AP rounds will penetrate 120mm of armor at close range, and the explosive will do just as well, assuming it’s still allowed”
>>
>>29140870
” I stopped, and sheepishly said “sorry, I ramble when I get analytical about warfare.” I thought I had shot myself in the moot in front of an intelligent, beautiful girl, since she was quiet for a few uncomfortable seconds, but then she smiled, slightly and replied, “good strategic overview, although your accent leaves much to be desired. Do you have family from the motherland? What year are you? Have you ever done senshado-do before?” I was confused by the rapidity of questions. I say something I based of off soldier’s autobiographies and I get complimented for it? I stumbled a bit before replying “eighth year, and yes, my family were Ukrainian, Cossacks, but I have not actually been in a moving tank, although I read everything I can about commanding them. I did always want to ride a tank like they do in the old cavalry charges, fast, furious closing with the enemy, and firing as we go…” She raised an eyebrow at that so I cut myself off there. I sheepishly added “I get rambling anytime I get analytic about tanks.”The girl made to speak but her phone started ringing. Red Army Choir, Soviet national Anthem. She stated, “Excuse me.” Then answered. I could hear someone on the other end, not easy given how they were screaming, but it was mostly in Japanese so I only caught a mention of “General Winter.” I looked quizzically at her and asked, “Something wrong?” “Blizzard, soon.” I looked at my watch, it was only 8:00 AM local, but I remembered enough stories about uncompromising Russian winters to not question it. Remembering my Older Brother’s lectures on being “a perfect Southern Gentleman” I offered to drive her back to her accommodations. She refused to ride with someone who she didn’t even know their name, so I replied, giving a salute, and response drilled into me by a constant military surroundings “Corporal ******* 3rd Cavalry Reenactment Regiment, reporting for duty Mam!”

Oof. You mind doing a bit of formatting, please? It's kind of hard to read like that.
>>

had it formatted in word, formatting got lost in copy-paste. give me a minute...
>>

Hope this is better (and copy-paste doesn't eat formatting. The russian was supposed to be in italics.)

She then ordered me to take her to her hotel, coincidentally the same one my group was staying at. I got the hotel and there was a blonde haired girl who looked about 5, and certainly acted like it when she yelled at Nonna for being late. As Nonna made to get out, I fell back into military mode and asked “Permission, speak freely” Nonna curtly replied, “granted”, so I asked, “will the Lance-Corporal have the opportunity to serve under the Vice Captain again?” She looked down from the top of the hotel steps and shouted over the now howling wind “Enlist in Pravda next year, and we will see if you are worthy.” At that, she turned and marched in behind her young friend.
I parked my car and went to my room, my mind dancing with my visions of a great battle field, of a charge against a massive enemy formation, led by a raven haired maiden of the snow, watching beside me and Obj. 704. The cold wanted me to curl up and sleep, but I could not, so I decided to prove my mettle. I went online and filled out the many, many forms needed for a foreigner to apply to a School ship. The Pravda site had a Russian version, so I used that to save translation time. It was about 4 P.M. Moscow time, when I finished, yet I felt like I needed a calculated flourish to top off my decisive action. Hoping to engage my heritage for dramatic writing, I wrote a short poem and gave it to one of the younger Pravda girls with instructions to give it to the Vice Captain during dinner, along with a print-out notice of successfully submitting my application.
“Roses are Red, Violets are Blue, I’m stuck on the Eastern Front, but at least I’m stuck with you.
Signed, your new Corporal. “
>>
>>29141038
I received a letter from the same girl used as a messenger the day before our return to the states. “To Corporal ****** of the 3rd Cavalry reenactment regiment, congratulations on taking your first step towards greater things. Your earlier assessment of the team’s strategic needs shows how we require an individual with your skill and abilities. Instead of submitting the normal essay, prepare a 100 page paper and presentation on the lessons of the Battle of Kursk from the Soviet side and their applications to Senshado-do. I have high expectations from you Corporal. Do not fail Pravda.
P.S. Your ability prose leaves much to be desired, but has excellent potential. I look forward to your future work.”
And that’s how I began my career as Pravda’s strategic observer and planner. And I think a girlfriend.
God, my parents were going to kill me.

If it wasn’t obvious, I like Nonna… a lot. I tried to take into account observations that were suggested a few threads ago, while not making this a BAD expy/self-insert. The only SI idea I haven’t used here is Erwin calling me Zhukov. That said, I really hope this doesn’t come off as Stu-ish. I had some ideas for me actually at Pravda, where I am a essentially an unpaid teacher's aid and secretary for the team. any one interested or should I post Katyusha now?

"Maybe we should check in with the flag, then?" You ask Miho, shrugging. Her doubts tended to become your doubts- she knew how these other commanders worked and what they'd be likely to do. You listen in on the tactical frequency as Miho calls for Turtle Team.

"Turtle Team, this is Anglerfish." She says. "We've seen no rear-guards and no scouts. They might attempt an all-or-nothing assault on your position." She says gravely.

"Yeah, well that's what we've got Hippo and Duck for, right?" Anzu responds lightly with what in the military would likely be considered minor insubordination. "We just sit tight and keep safe."

"It's not just that, Anzu." Miho chastises. "You need to be ready-" Miho sounds about ready to give very direct orders when Erwin shouts out over the comms.

"Contact! Contact! I see Shermans, coming over the ridge!" She shouts. "Bring us twenty degrees left! Lo-" There's a scuffle and Caesar continues the order. "Twenty degrees left and load AP!" They're still adjusting to their co-command.

Ok, I was working on the boyfriend segment when I realized that aside from Mako, Yukari, and Miho, we know nothing about the other character's families. (prepare for silliness)
We were preparing for the finals against Kuromorimine when the hangar doors were pulled open, not an easy feat considering they required two massive diesel engines just to move, by a pair of hands that looked like they could crush a man’s skull with little effort. A man stepped inside whose shoulders came up to the top of the IS-2, looked around, and, spotting his target, said something that left us all surprised. “Katyusha! There you are!” Our Leader turned around from where she had been admonishing some poor crewmembers about proper Soviet behavior and shouted “Papa!” We watched shocked as our Fearless Leader ran to her father like a girl returned from basic school, and was swept up in her father’s massive arms.

He hugged her briefly before holding her at arm’s length, several feet off the ground, and exclaimed, “This cannot be my Katyusha, she is far too tall.” Whereas most people who insulted Katyusha’s… “Height challenges” were lucky to spend the rest of the school year with no shelter on cold bread and ice water, Katyusha just giggled, something I had no idea she could do and said “silly daddy, I’m still Katyusha!” The large man only laughed and hugged Katyusha even tighter.
>>
>>29141402
Katyusha kissed her father on the cheek and asked, “I thought you would be busy with work.” The man gave another one of his massive laughs and said “Team can go without me for now. Also, someone else wants to see you.” Katyusha’s eyes widened “you mean… Auntie is here too?” “Yes” stated the heavyset man, “and grandpa and grandma?” the man nodded. “And even Uncle Zangief?” “Brother had Mann co. pay tickets for entire family!” crowed the man. Katyusha just let out something that sounded like a “kyaa”, hugging her father even tighter by the neck. “I’m so glad you and everyone came to see me fight.”
Father replied, “Of course, I come to see my little girl win. Besides,” he pointed at the Kuromorimine assemble hangar, “entire enemy team is babies!” A second-year stood up from where she had been working on a track and said “uh, sir…” Katyusha’s father waved a hand dismissively and said, “Just call me Heavy.” The girl continued, “Mr. Heavy, the enemy team has won the senshado nationals the past 11 years in a row, and placed in the top 5 during the last international tournament.” Heavy raised an eyebrow, took a look over his shoulder at the enemy team and then declared loudly, “Who sends all these babies to fight?”
>>
>>29141250
>>"How many contacts, Hippo?"
>>
>>29141422
Turning to face the opposite hangar, he pointed at the enemy team and yelled so loud I swear the entire ship heard him, “ALL OF YOU ARE DEAD!” Heavy then pointed at the enemy commander and shouted, “YOU, YES YOU! YOU ARE DEAD!” while drawing a finger across his throat. At this point some of us were whispering worriedly about how the commission would handle a parent openly insulting and threatening somebody, but I was more worried about the death glare we were getting from the commander’s older sister.
Katyusha stood up on her father’s shoulders and faced the rest of us. “That’s right! They are no match for us! We will squash the enemy like bugs! The cowards will know we are coming for them, and they will try and fight, but we will show them PAIN WITHOUT END! URAAAA!” The team at this point was past the point of disbelief at seeing Katyusha’s family and just cheered, ready to throw themselves into the enemy tanks. I was cheering along everyone else, but I think I saw Nonna slip away and take a quick shot of something from a concealed flask. If I had the time, I think I would have asked for some myself, but everyone was loading up and getting ready to deploy, so I just climbed into the loader seat of the IS-2 and awaited my commander.

"How many contacts, Hippo?" You ask into the headset- low voice, Russells. Encourage a calm reply.

"Three so far!" Caesar says, voice barely holding back panic. "Doesn't look like they've seen us, yet. Do we engage?" Three Shermans accounted for. That means they could still have left two and the flag back. An even split doesn't seem right, though- it's too indecisive. You chew on your lip as you mull through the options.

"Negative, Hippo." Miho says, her voice actually calm. "Hold on until you're sure that's all of them- do you know what types they are?" It won't be an easy answer- considering that the actual tank nerds are concentrated in your two crews. Erwin might know what they were if they were German, but even you screw up the difference between Shermans every now and again.

"First one is... flat plated front. Gun with a single-baffle muzzle-brake." Erwin says, having evidently wrestled the radio from her co-commander. "Second one... flat plate but it's gun has no muzzle-brake. Same with the third!"

You hear some excited chatter over in Miho's tank. "Yukari says the first one is the last Easy Eight. The other two are A2s or A3s." A few seconds later. "Alright, open fire when you're ready! But make sure that's all they have, first!"

"Roger!" Caesar says.

I have a theory on that thing...There's no way the engine would have held up to storage after all those years. What if they called up Porsche and asked them to make a new engine for the tank? A 2013 diesel engine would be frighteningly powerful by comparison to a 1944 diesel engine.

"Alright... Engaging!" Erwin says with sudden enthusiasm.

"Engaging!" Noriko chimes in, with a lot more enthusiasm! "Give 'em hell, Akebi!"

You look over at Miho who's glancing worriedly at the map of the area. You stick two fingers in your mouth and whistle loudly enough to be heard over the engine. "Miho- stop worrying. We've got a flag tank to find." You grin back at her. "Gotta let the kids handle their own problems, or they'll never learn!"

She seems to snap out of it, nodding back at you before pressing her throat mic. "Alright, let's keep going!" She looks back down at her map again as the tanks start moving. "Let's find their flag tank." She says, but much more distantly. She's thinking of something that you haven't considered yet.

You continue pushing up and through the forest, finally getting a break in the folliage a few minutes later, the forest giving way to a bald hilltop, the tracks leading up and over the edge. "Richard, slowly. Just need a turret-down real quick."

He creeps up, stopping just as you get a view down the valley below. "Hold up, Miho wait!" You say, scanning the terrain below- it was mostly open meadows broken up by glacial rock deposits- varying in size from a small dog to a small house, they stuck out at odd intervals along the valley, providing potential defensive positions. An excellent spot for an ambush.

My name is Artyom. I was born in the slums of Moscow. My parents used to live in Chernobyl, but they lost everything when the reactor went up. I remember my mother giving me my only set of cloths for my fifth birthday… an old children’s radiation suit, complete with gas mask. I never saw her again… and I don’t remember what she looked like outside that blurry outline from within my mask. I have always worn some sort of gasmask when I go about. It prevents… unnecessary trouble. I spent several years in the Russian school system, before winning a lottery enrollment in Pravda academy, as part of a Sino-Soviet enrollment exchange program in 2003.
>>
>>29143412
I currently am a member of Pravda’s disciplinary committee. While the public morals committee takes after the old KGB, SMERSH, and the general spying and espionage agencies, the disciplinary committee takes after the Commissariat. “We root out corruption and decay where ever we may find it!” is a phrase you might hear from one of our more… vocal members. I simply document problem people and pass on the information to others. You have to be good ant sneaking and observing to survive on your own, particularly in the Moscow slums; and you would be surprised how well a 304 millimeter tall Russian in a gas mask and great coat can sneak around a school. I was content to observe initially, but I grew frustrated with the abuse within the entire school. I found myself at a loss of what to do, until I met her.

A 1.06m, blonde-haired, blue-eyed, brilliant angel named Katyusha. She wanted to share her plans for the senshado team, but the senior captain ignored her for her height. I watched as a second year student named Nonna walked over and put Katyusha on her shoulders so that she would no longer be a “little one”. I was inspired by this. I decided then and there to dedicate myself to seeing Katyusha succeed. I visited the senshado captain later that night. After waking him up with a .44 Magnum in the face, I handed him Katyusha’s presentation. “Read”, I told him. After he read it cover to cover twice, I handed him two pieces of paper. One was a letter admitting of Katyusha and Nonna to the Senshado team and the second was a confession of misappropriating funds club and school funds while implicating the team’s command as accomplices. It took some “convincing”, but the captain and the senior command staff confessed, were found guilty of and purged for their crimes.
>>
>>29143428

>304 millimeter
Some sort of pixe?
>>
>>29143446
Soon after, Nonna hunted down and confronted me, no easy feat, about the sudden appointment of Katyusha and herself as captain and vice-captain of the team. I declared my dedication to seeing a brilliant leader rise to her rightful place of power, “because it’s the right thing to do… and she’s adorable”. (Thank god I was wearing my gas mask.) Turns out Nonna was… attracted to Katyusha similarly. We talked and came an agreement. We would work together to see our little Red Star Rise to the top. Nonna would accompany Katyusha on senshado and in private, I would care for her during other school activities. When asked why she was constantly shadowed by a man in a gas mask, Katyusha would reply, “It’s just some guy or another from the commissariat. They want to show their loyalty to their Leader, so I allow it.” Katyusha does not know it is always me observing, supporting her from the shadows.
>>29143455
derp, tried to convert six feet to metric.
>>
>>29143472
The day after the victory against Kuromorimine, Nonna asked me a curious question. If I liked Katyusha so much, why do I not tell Katyusha how I feel about her? I answered, “A Great Leader only needs one confidant, and that’s you. I am content with simply observing.” Nonna called me on my bluff, “are you sure you are content, or just unable to act?” leaving the implied threat of spinelessness hang in the air. I thought for a few seconds, then a few seconds more. “You have given me much to think about.” I said to Nonna, ending the exchange. The next Christmas morning, Katyusha awoke to find a gift from “your biggest admirer.” She unwrapped it to reveal a miniature KV-2 tank converted into an alarm clock. She was bragging to Nonna about how much she liked it and how its alarm was a voice announcing the time for the Purge. Katyusha has never heard me speak, so she never realized that I recorded my own voice, and built the clock from a model I bought with my life savings. I think I shall reveal myself come Valentine’s Day. I hope she likes me.
Authors notes: : I tried to base him off of Artyom from the Metro games (I.E. I reading the wiki) and yes, he is intentionally meant to be a bit of a stalker. (If you think that’s creepy, I reference Lovey-Dovey Panzer and Motto Love Love as canon… with him seeing everything) When I played both Metro game, I played as a stealthy observer listening in on everyone and everything before striking, so I made that part of the personality. Plus, you never hear of “great leaders” like Katyusha dating, so we have a behind-the-scenes admirer.
Artyom’s age: born 1996, entered Pravda at age 16 (2012), is currently a second year student, age 17, so he’s a year behind everyone else.

The girls in tanks are a given in the setting, as are the Soviet-esque runnings of Pradva. The Heavy and Creed as parents are over-the-top, but light-hearted and silly enough to fit the setting. Sticking a handgun in a schoolboy's face over a classroom squabble is trying way too hard. Bear in mind that while the characters may play the nations that they base their teams on to an extreme, there's just as much "Girl" as there is "Panzer," and schoolgirls aren't particularly well known for having hard-edged and violent ways.
>>
>>29143951
You have not read what the Soviet Union was like under Stalin. Pravda is Soviet based, so I view the creators and primary financial backers to be either the people who view Communism as "glorious" in Russia or China. The school administration I view would reflect that. Now an actual shooting, the Russian version, would be a bit much, so I see "purged" as "striped of all privilages an drank while sentenced to X weeks hard labor on bread and water." you know, the Chinese version. Also, Yandere is gender neutral.

You wave for Miho to bring her Panzer IV up to the ridge beside Black Jack, Mako expertly going to a turret-down position. Looking over at Miho, you silently point down into the valley. She puts up her binocs and scans. "It's an excellent ambush point... But I don't see any-Wait." She brings up binocs down, before putting them back up. "Right there- big rock in the middle, little one just to the left of it?"

You stare down and see it- the unmistakable shape of an M1A1 76mm barrel, sticking out from the rock. "Do you see any more?" You ask, bringing your own binoculars up. "Wait... there's another. Thirty yards left." You point out the muzzle brake.

Wait. Muzzle brake? "Crap. That's another Easy 8!" They were almost perfectly hidden from your approach- it would've been a hell of an ambush, if not a very long-lived one. "Do you see the Flag tank?"

"No." Miho says quietly, "I don't..."

I browse /k/, and because this is a Quest and /a/ doesn't know shit about tanks.
Then again from reading LGA, neither does /tg/

quests on /a/ usually only stay un-reported in VERY specific circumstances. Also, a lot of /a/ would probably take offense to inserting guys into GuP. I know for a fact that many of the people who frequent Strike Witches threads hated SWQ for that very reason

random question for BlackJack: are we going to cover events from the Manga or not? (match against Anchovy, Miho getting her notice of disinheritence, etc.)
>>
>>29144061
As a matter of fact, I have. I know about the gulags, the bloody Polish massacres, the Holodomor and all the assorted manufactured famines that went along with it. I've also actually watched GuP, and I remember that even though being 16 was a rather shitty time of my life, I was worried more about tests, keeping my car running, and finding out if that cute new boy was gay, rather than having a gun stuck in my face or being fed only bread and water for a week. My cousins that went to Catholic private schools told me it was pretty much the same deal for them, sans the boys. The same deal with my friends that went to the north-county public schools, a.k.a. the worst schools in all of Florida. The common theme here is that these are schools first and foremost, and while they might SEEM like prison camps while you're in them, the good and bad that you experience in them amounts to mouse farts in the hurricane that is your adult life. In animeland, at least the one GuP seems to be set in, things are even happier and brighter. Pradva is as much the USSR as Saunders is America; it's a good face, but it's still a Japanese highschool at heart.

LGA is a very... specific beast. It seems to attract the specific kind of people who know absolutely nothing.
>>
>>29144431
>>29144261
LGA? The other GuPQ?
>>
>>29144399
ok, easy, did not know I had touched a wrong button there, and I see why. I just see Katyusha's declarations about purging being slightly more than hyperbole, but that's just me. anime high schools are... varied in their presentation and tone. sorry if I touched off some bad memories, you're not the only inner city high-school alum here, lets just put it behind us and enjoy little girls driving tanks, ok?
>>
>>29144431
Actually it's pretty easy to describe.

It attracts the armchair generals and the wannabe dictators because of its game style with minutiae, finance and tactics. The sort of people who claim to know what they're talking about but really should leave it to the more competent members of society.
>>
>>29144457
Yeah
>>
>>29144470
Where did I say it touched off a bad memory? In retrospect, I had a pretty typical high school life. You irritated me more by claiming I had no knowledge of the USSR than anything else. The point I'm trying to make is that it's incredibly hard to reconcile the angry, brutal, and exceedingly violent Pradva you describe with actual high school, let alone an idealized anime one.
>>
>>29144579
its right about now that people I know seem to be blowing up over "how their life sucked", what you wrote seemed similar in tone and I'm just trying to roll with the punches. I accept your honest criticism of you not see a connection between what I write and the canon series. that's why my stuff is fanfiction... I let a dumb idea remain in the story and never ran it by anyone before showing it off. I suck, you have a point. I also apologize for assuming you had no knowledge of the Soviet Union. I really need to stop making assumptions.

Something definitely isn't right here, that would be more Easy Eights than they supposedly brought...

Apologies on 4chan are rare things. Consider it accepted.

They also brought more M4A1s than expected too. Our intel was of limited effectiveness
>>
>>29144701
Well, they discovered they had a spy in their midst. Keeping the same plans and lineup would be rather foolish.

>>29144690
at the risk of sounding arrogant, I prefer to think of myself as just a decent guy.

so they either go a last-second shipment of parts for conversions, or they had multiple tank hangars.
>>
"Richard, bring us around to the right, under the ridge..." You duck down and tell your driver over the sound of the engine. Richard drops the tank back and starts turning as you go back to the team's radio. "Duck, Hippo, how's it holding up?" You ask, worried that things would have taken a turn for the worst.

"Looking good, Grizzly!" Noriko says. "We've got them pinned back! They won't even come out from behind the hill!" There's a short burst of static as the 75mm of the Excelsior reports over the open mic. "Ha! EAT 75mm DEATH!"

You're about to breath a sigh of relief when Caesar bursts over the radio. "New units! They're engaging us from the right!" She shouts. "Forty-degrees right! RIGHT! OTHER RIGHT!" And that's when all hell starts breaking loose over the radio. "Loap AP! Engage the flankers!"

"Hold on, Original group is pushing!" Noriko shouts. "Concentrate fire, Hippo!"

Miho's tank, originally following you stops and peeks over the ridge and you command Richard to do the same, as you get there, you can see what you'd missed from your first pass- "DAMMIT! That Easy 8's a wreck! They must've towed it into position here!"

That means...

"Russells! They're throwing everything at our flag!" Miho shouts. "Stupid! Why didn't I see it?!"

You punch of the top of the turret in frustration. "Richard! Bring us back around! We need to get back to the other teams!"

That's a pretty ingenious plan.
Though I that KO'd tanks are towed away as soon as able. Wouldn't want to get disqualified for accidentally breaking the "No shooting at knocked out tanks" rule.

John turns around from the sink having washed the dishes and checks his watch “suit up boys, Hamish is going to be here soon”

“I'm not wearing this” Rob responds holding up the overalls

“Don't then” you retort

You put yours on and have zip it up. Rob slips his on over his pants anyway, not wanting to be the odd one out
“Rob, take your pants off”

“What? I'm not taking my pants off infront of you”

“It's gonna be hot, you'll sweat like crazy” you warn

“Fine...turn around”

You shake your head and turn away unable to believe he wouldnt take his pants off with other people watching, then again when you put it that way it's pretty weird

“Alright, I'm done”

You turn around to see Rob wearing the zipped up overalls

Before you say anything John pipes up “looking good man” as he walks to Rob and gives a hearty slap on the back. You see Rob grimace from the physical contact as if allergic to it

You make your way to the fridge to see what you can turn into lunch

>[1/?]
>>
>>29145077

“John” you ask “did you bring lunch for yourself?”

“Yeah, made a BLT, you want some?”

“Nah mate” you respond while grabbing some leftover Butter Chicken, I'm sure Rick has a microwave I can use

“Who's Rick?” John inquires. You remember he hasn't met Rick yet, or visited the Club Grounds. You begin filling John in when the throaty roar of a V8 announces Hamish's arrival thus interrupting you
“C'mon, lets get going”

“Did Hamish send you a message?” John inquires again

“That's the sound of his car”

“oooh...wait he got a new car? He loved the Buick”

“Engine swap” you reply quickly looking through the blinds “yep, that's him”

“C'mon, lets go” you order while walking to the door

You hold it open and beckon your flatmate and guest

>[2/?]

>>29145090

The morning air greets you with a cool kiss, the day hasn't started yet but you're sure it's going to be a boiler. You hold the door open to let John and Rob out before turning back to lock up

As you turn back you hear John call out“Shotgun” upon seeing the Buick, he turns around and flashes you and Rob a toothy smile
“Fuck” is all you can hear Rob say as you brush past

“Could be worse Rob, could be midday” you call out not even turning to look at him

John is on the other side of the car talking to Hamish, you take the initiative and open the passenger door to slide the seat forward. Rob follows you in shortly after

Hamish pulls out and the journey begins

“Oh man, I have to tell you guys about one of the places we went to while working” Rob says excitedly “So, we go to this house to pick up a bouncy castle and they're having a party”
He continues his little story “You wouldn't believe it, but they had a Stripper”

“I can't actually believe that” Hamish responds without taking his eyes off the road

“Was she hot?” John inquires

You cut in before Rob can respond “she wasn't a Stripper, she was a belly dancer, and yes, she was pretty hot”

“But she was a Stripper, she was dancing in front of people”

“Turn on the radio John” you cut in again, hoping to distract Robert from his terrible story

You awake as the early morning sun bears down on you. You try to ascertain your location by looking through the windscreen, but all you can discern is that the area is wooded and interspersed with grave yards
“How did I not see this shit last time” you think “this is pretty foreboding”

The area starts to become somewhat familiar and soon enough you're making the turn into Savannah Tankery Club

You're greeted by the sight of people milling around, talking, and tending to the tanks lined outside the twin hangers. The mid morning sun accenting the shadows while a clear sky lazes overhead

Hamish pulls into the parking lot next to the Saloon, furthest from the hangers. You exit the car after John gets out and slides the chair forward, and with a grunt extracate yourself from the back

“C'mon” you say “lets go check out the tank, get it ready”

You lead your friends down to the second hanger while checking out all the tanks that had been brought out for pre match checks. You see a few M4A1s and M3s, though the only Private tank out is the T-34/76 idling outside the last Hanger

“I thought there would be more girls” Rob mentions

You can see where he's coming from, playing in tanks has been marketed as a female sport for some reason, but their not about to say “no” lest they face the risk of appearing un-PC
Then you realise what he means “It's not like you're going to get some Rob, or you could get some and then end up in jail”

He frowns at the first remark. For a guy that talks as much as he does he's got shit game

The idling T-34/76 passes to your right, you note the name written on the side of the turret
“Iron Maiden”

"What model is that?" John asks looking at the T-34 and then to you

You shrug "I dunno, it's got that new turret, so like 1942?"

Hamish points to the Cupola expecting you to catch on

"1943?"

"yes" he replies calmly

"I don't know, the T-34 series might as well be the same tank every time" you try to cover your incompetence in this area "at least I know what the 85 looks like"

Upon reaching the hanger entrance you pause and take note of the large amount of people, and that the only tanks left in the Hanger are the T32 and Wolverine

That's it for now

I thought the German tanks were all gasoline.
