ROSTER AND STATS: http://pastebin.com/sTXjQKMF
FACILITIES: http://pastebin.com/5Fk5p19Y

You are the PRODUCER, a former soldier hired to manage a group of teenage girls on their rise to stardom, assuming they don't get killed in the process!

Last time, you were out recruiting prospective idols to get your entertainment company going. You already recruited 3 idols, and you were maybe possibly planning to get a fourth. However, it seemed she was a bit off the deep end, considering you were watching her literally shoot lightning from her hands at random people while laughing maniacally. True, the mob attacked her first, but still, it was sort of an unnerving thing to see. You also notice Jenner switching gears to reverse.

"Hold on." You say, squinting your eyes. "I think we might have something here."

"Are you serious?" Jenner blinks. "The girl's obviously crazy."

"Yeah, but how many chances do we get to see a girl that shoots lightning out of her fingertips?"

"I hope you know what you're doing..." Jenner sighs.

"Julie, do you know anything about her?" You ask your newly recruited Idol prospect.

"Ummmm, well, mostly just from rumors and all." Julie shrugs. "Everybody just calls her a freak because, you know, that lightning thing. It's definitely not from augs, because if you got the money for augs like that, what the heck would you be doing down in the Tombs?"

"Huh."

At this point, most of the mob that wasn't fried to crisp have fled, essentially leaving you as the only people in the immediate area. The feral girl's attention now falls on you.

Jenner just gives you the "oh my god are you serious" look.

"Ummm, good luck, sir." Julie says in an attempt to be helpful.

You step out of the car and carefully approach the wild, lightning bolt shooting girl.

"Hey there, Miss." You say as calmly and diplomatically as possible, your hands raised to show you weren't armed. "I'm the Producer of Clover Entertainment. Do you think we can talk for a bit?"

The girl just looks at you for a second before you see a bright flash of light.

Well, you can't say that you were regularly hit by lightning in your military career. Sure, you experienced a lot of pain during your service but electricity was a whole different kind of pain. Your muscles tense and spasm as false signals course through your nerves and you collapse on the ground. You're not dead, but part of you sort of wishes you were.

Your vision starts getting all wonky too as your eyes try to adjust to the sudden electrical surge. Fortunately, most augs, especially military grade ones, were hardened against power surges and EMP blasts, but that didn't mean they were totally immune. Your arms felt a bit off and your ballistic computer had shut down temporarily.

"Heh, a silly human trying to tell ME what to do?" The girl spits. "Lookit you, you just fall down like the rest of them!"

Lightning should take the path of least resistance to the GROUND. How on earth is she projecting it FOWARD? There's no wires, no conduit for the electricity - it's just travelling straight through the air! This is a great mystery indeed. Managing to sent the lightning on that path is even more of a puzzle than managing to produce lightning. She would have to make it so that the path through that person was less resistant than just simply travelling directly to the ground through air. But if traveling through that person offere so little resistance than the lightning wouldn't hurt the person, maybe tickle a bit at worst.
>>
>>29139040
"Hah.... that was... quite shocking..." You manage to croak as you slowly pick yourself up from the ground. You arms are still a bit twitchy, though. You might have to get them checked out.

"Ooooh, impressive. You're still alive!" The girl says, mild surprise on her face. "Okay, I'll give you a minute. Better talk fast."

"Well..." You pause for a second. You had thought of a general recruiting line, but you've totally forgotten in now due to the lightning attack, so you're forced to make it up on the spot.

"How would you like to be an idol?" You say bluntly.

The girl stays silent and you both stare at each other for what seems like the longest time.

"...what?" The girl blinks. Now genuinely surprised.

"Look... I'm not sure why you're down here, or how you do what you do with that lightning thing, which is really cool, by the way. All I'm concerned is finding girls with potential, and I think you've got lots of it."

"Waaaaaiiiiit." The girl narrows her eyes. "You're not trying to cheat me here, are you?"

"I'm not trying to cheat your anything like that." You shake your head. "Look, is this what you really want? To live down in this dump for the rest of your life?"

You motion to the blasted landscape around you that can't even enjoy the simple pleasure of seeing sunlight. Such was the nature of the Tombs.

"B-but there's a catch. There always is." The girl scowls, obviously still not fully convinced.

"Well, we got to teach you how to sing and dance, most likely how to read too, in a addition to general education, and all the required immunizations... it's going to be a lot of work, at our expense, of course. The only thing you have to do is to be good at putting up a show... and beating up a few people on the side."

"Okay... I'll give this Idol thing a try." The girl grudgingly agrees. "But only because I like getting paid to beat up people! And any funny business-"

"You'll shock us all, I know." You sigh. "Is it a deal, miss...?"

"Cole... just Cole." The girl says, with the faintest bit of sadness flitting through her eyes. "Never really bothered with last names or crap like that."

"Well, Cole, we have a deal, then?" You say, reaching out your hand."

"Deal." Cole hesitates at first, as if she can't bring herself to touch you, but finally shakes your hand. You wince a bit as you feel a slight snap like a static bolt. Even her skin feels tingly as is electricity was continually coursing through it.

>COLE RECRUITED

The ride back is a fairly awkward one, with both Julie and Cole in the backseat. In the confines of this car, and outside the borderline poisonous atmosphere of the Tombs, you can definitely tell both Julie and especially Cole were in need of serious cleaning up.

"You're a really crazy son of a bitch, you know what?" Jenner sighs. "I nearly thought you were dead!"

"Yeah... I almost thought that too." You laugh lightly. "But hey, we came out ahead, in my opinion.

"I hope so." Jenner shakes her head.

You turn to check up on your two girls, and smile as you see that they're both asleep. You're pretty sure these seat cushions were the softest and most comfortable things either of them felt ever.

"Okay, I guess we can start talking business now." You turn back to Jenner. "Our building has living facilities, right?" You ask.

"Yes, on our third floor. Enough space for six people to live comfortably, though we can cram in more if needed." Jenner nods.

"Well, Julie and Cole here are obvious, but what about Rin and Rochelle? I'm sure they already have their own living arrangements."

"Well, that's up to you, Producer. You can have them stay where they are right now, or you can have them move to the office dorms. It's your call."

Might as well get everyone acclimated at once.

Also, I was thinking about our security situation. I mean yeah, we can have the grils trained to be OPERATORS in their own right, but you can never have enough in a cyberpunk society. So we can't hire out bodyguards ourselves, right? And the only way we'll be able to get a security team is if we hire out a squad from a PMC or security firm, right? Well, I was thinking somewhere down the road we might wanna seek a sponsorship from a security company in return for the usage of some of their...assets. Not to say that the girls won't be able to defend themselves, but I'd just feel better if we had some guards on-hand.

You give a quick call to both girls asking them about their housing situations.

"Sure, I got no problems." Rochelle responds. "Was actually kind of looking for an excuse to get away from my parents."

You mull over your options. On the one hand, you'd like for all of your idols to be in one place. However, Rin did have ample personal reasons to stay at her current house. You quickly check your map, looking at the relative distance between your office and Rin's residence. You note that it's not TOO far, but not exactly in walking distance. You suppose you'll have to worry about this later.

"Okay, Rin, you can stay where you are right now, but I expect you to be on time for practice. Is that clear?"

"Crystal, Producer." Rin affirms. "Don't worry, I won't let you down!"

"I suppose first things first we need to get these two cleaned up." You say, motioning to Julie and Cole."

"I'm not looking forward to it." Jenner sighs. "And my car wash bill is going to skyrocket."

You finally return to the office, which looks just as dark and empty as before. Well, you're sure that in a few days things will be more lively as the new start to move in. Jenner parks in the garage and you gently wake both Julie and Cole up, with Cole giving you a nasty static shock when you do so.

"Hey Cole, I know it might be funny to you, but please try not to shock everybody around you. It's not nice."

"Fine, MOM." Cole rolls her eyes. "I don't like wasting my energy, anyways."

"So, first we'll show you two your rooms, and then we have to get you two cleaned up. Have to look presentable and all."

You can't say you're not amused by the contrast between Julie's overjoyed expression and the expression of sheer, utter horror on Cole's.

"Nice! I always wanted to see what a hot shower feels like!" Julie grins.

"Oh no, nononononono." Cole shakes her head rapidly. "That means water. I don't do water. I don't like water. You can't make me. NOPENOPENOPENOPE."

Perhaps we should find out what her beef with water is? If its related to her powers, we could find her some futureshower that uses sound waves or something.

If you're just sloughing dead skin, and removing grime and old sweat, you could use fine grit sand (preferably followed by pressurized air to get the sand out of your nooks and crannies) instead of water.
But eventually you need to get the compounds in your sweat that don't evaporate (like urea) off, and you DO need soap and water for that.

I can't actually think of any off the top of my head. Most oils are non-concudctive but are rather, you know...oily.

We could dunk her in fruit juice and get the other girls to lick that off.
Because it would be inappropriate for P-san to be licking his Idols so soon.
>>
>>29141273
On our budget? I don't think that's happening. Air hoses seem like a bad idea. Sponges and gloves sound best at preventing dangerous shocks (and seem kinder than a water hose) but if we have to use the hose we have to use the hose.

The amusing thing will be when she can clearly just shut off her powers and take a shower normally, but past experiences in the Tombs simply made her afraid of people using water against her in combat.

"Okay, how about this. Jenner, you handle Julie. I don't think she even knows how to work a shower."

"I do too!" Julie protests. "I sorta... read about them."

"Whoa, you can read? Must be fuckin' royalty, aren't you?" Cole snorts.

"Now now, Cole, Julie's going to be one of your partners, so you should learn to behave." You say, grabbing her by the ear.

"H-Hey!" Cole yelps and tries to shock you through the contact but your augmetic arm insulates you from the worst of it. "Now, I know you may be wary about your powers react badly with water, but I'm pretty sure a shower is fine, right? It's not like you're being dunked in a lake or anything."

"Yeah, I know that it's just that..." Cole frowns. "Look, a lot of people may enjoy showers but I don't. It just feels... I don't know... WEIRD."

"Well you're going to have to get used it." You sigh as you guide her to her dorm. "There should be a towel in there. Just undress and come back out with the towel."

"Yeah yeah, whatever." Cole grunts before going into her room. As you wait, you see Jenner guiding a towel clad Julie to the bathroom. Due to space concerns, the bathroom on the dorm level was communal. You look away as they pass by so you won't give them impression that you're staring. You have to be professional about this, after all.

"Okay, let's go." Cole says.

You turn and your eyes widen you realize Cole is standing in the middle of the hall naked. She's holding her towel, but she's just not wearing it.

And part of selling sex appeal is teasing the *idea* of nudity, but never actually giving it away. The more people who see you naked, the less valuable that becomes, and the less money you'll make.

Unless you wanted to get into porn or something. I mean, it's not too uncommon for retired idols to do that, but you should still probably build your idol image first, and then do the pornography. It's just not really feasible to do it the other way around you know. Used goods and all that."

"Huh? Is something wrong?" Cole asks from behind you.

"Uh... erm... maybe I was making too many assumptions..." You stammer as you try to regain your compsure. "But up here, girls generally don't walk around naked all the time."

"Well hey, this is my home now, right? I pretty much walk around naked where I lived all the time." You can imagine Cole just shrugging.

"You're not going to be the only one that lives here." You point out. "You might um... make the wrong impression."

"Fiiiiiine." Cole sighs. "Okay, you can turn around now."

You turn to see Cole with the towel wrapped around her body, hiding the naughtiest bits.

"Better?"

"Better."

You both make the short trek to the bathroom, where you decide to take the shower stall farthest from Jenner and Julie, for privacy reasons.

"So, do you like, explode when you touch water, or something?" You ask as Cole steps into the shower.

"Eh, well... it's more like my powers short out." Cole explains. "Can't use 'em at all while I'm wet, so naturally I'm vulnerable when I'm wet."

"I see." You nod. You wait for Cole to turn on the water but you hear nothing. "Um, Cole is something wrong?"

Cole then pokes her head out of the stall.

"Ummmm, can you turn on the water for me? I... I can't do it."

Heh, for a semi-murderous girl who can shoot lightning powers, you can see that Cole really was nothing more than a scared kid inside. Extremely powerful, yes, but still rather vulnerable in her own ways.

"Okay, I'll do it just this once." You say. "But you're going to have to learn to do it yourself. And don't try to fool me by not bathing, or we'll have to hose you down."

"F-fine." Cole scowls.

You lean in and turn the handles.

"T-too hot!" Cole complains.

You sigh and adjust the handles.

"Now it's too c-cold!"

"It'd be easier if you did it yourself." You shake your head and do one final adjustment. "There."

"T-thanks, Producer." Cole says a bit reluctantly.

About fifteen minutes later, the girls are cleaned up and dried up, dressed in simple T-shirts and shorts.

"Hm, we'll have to get them some better looking clothes." Jenner notes.

"Yeah, but this should be fine for now." You nod and turn to Julie and Cole. "Okay girls, now remember, you need to shower at least once a day. Hygiene is important."

"Roger that, sir!" Julie nods.

"Whatever." Cole pouts.

"Right, well, I think that's it for today. You two can go back to your rooms."

Once the two girls are gone, you finally breathe a sigh of relief.

"Dear lord, I hope the others are easier to handle."

"Well, girls from upper class distracts have their own quirks to deal with." Jenner sighs and looks down at her suit. "I knew going into the Tombs was a bad idea. I smell like a dead skunk."

As you walk out of the bathroom, you take a chance to take a quick peek at what Julie and Cole are doing. Rather than go back to their rooms, they both seem to have decided to hang out in the floor's small recreation lounge, where Julie is watching TV and is totally engrossed by the latest episode of WILDEST POLICE CHASES. It seems like this episode is coming from the headcam of a cop gunning down an entire drug lab by himself. Meanwhile, Cole seems to be fast asleep on the couch. You decide not to bother them and keep going.

Getting down to the office floor, you stop by Jenner's desk, where she left quite a few files and documents about the support staff you're hiring.

You first pull out the file for you Counselor, a Lillith Chalmers. Born in Wyoming, and later moved to California.

Browsing through the file, you see that she had once been an idol herself, which gave her unique insight on the life of an idol most other therapists probably wouldn't have. However, the file doesn't really go into detail what she did as an idol, as if she wasn't particularly proud of that time of her life.

Other than that, after she left the idol business, she went back to school and got a degree in clinical psychology, among a few other titles. No criminal record, but Jenner does note that she's at least somewhat sympathetic to groups that call for a reform in the idol industry. Jenner's notes further state that while there's no indication that she's a threat, it's best to keep an eye on her.

"Mr. Producer." You hear the Boss' voice echo throughout the building's intercom. "If you are still present, can you please report to the control room? I have something to show you."

Writing idol songs is easy. Just take the lyrics from christian rock songs, replace all the words about God and Jesus with references to a male familial member, and then put it to a generic, upbeat, over-synthesized pop track. Put the girls in the skimpiest outfits you can get away with and make sure they appear as sickeningly upbeat, enthusiastic, and generic as the music sounds. Emphasize the personality quirks of the individual idols in a really stereotyped and harmless way that's as broadly appealing as possible.

Bam, you're in the idol industry and rolling in dough.

This is cyberpunk, right? Surely there are procedurally generated pop songs by now. Hell, we have the technology for that already. Just plug in the girls' vocal ranges and whatever shit is trending this week, and boom, formulaic 4/4 pop song with the save verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus structure and the same four chords.

Hell, you can even vocaloid that shit. No need to get meatspace girls involved at all unless they're daughters of important Yakuzas.

But if the audience is essentially fed the same thing over and over again, how would they know what they want? I think we should try something...different so the fans would come crawling to us for more, but I can't think of what to give them.

But if you think about it, there are just a finite number of notes the human ear can pick up, and a finite combination for them to be arranged. If anything, all music can be recycled because people like repetition and patterns. It fades to obscurity only to reemerge just when people are just about to forget it.

You set down the files. You guess you'll just have to look at them again another day.

It takes you a little while to figure out, but you finally find you way to the office's control room, which also sort of doubles as your office. In here, you see that a lot of money and care went into it. There was a lot of state of the art machinery in here. Some computers for personal and work use, a large holographic map of Delta City, and a large, but familiar looking console in the back.

"Ah! Producer! Good to see you!" The Boss says happily as he steps out from behind the holo map. "I just thought I'd show you around your office before I leave for the night!"

"It's... pretty impressive." You admit. "Where did you get all this?"

"From a previous life of mine." He says vaguely. "But come, I do have something special to show you!"

The Boss then guides you to the rear of the room to the mysterious console, and now you're sure what it is.

"Boss... what the hell is a Harbinger BattleCom System doing in here?!" You blink in surprise.

"Why, to give us an edge in this business, of course!" The Boss grins.

You're somewhat shocked. This was top secret military hardware here, used to coordinate and control troops on the battlefield. While BattleComs were not uncommon in this day and age, Harbinger classes were something extra special, since they were nearly impossible to hack and harder to jam. Nobody really knew how they worked, though some suspected some sort of fancy quantum mechanics or something like that. Either way, you've seen these used only exclusively for special forces and covert ops.

"How... how did you get this?!?"

"I have my ways." The Boss grins. "You've used this system before, yes?"

"Yeah." You nod. "It can interface with either brain aug or injected nanites and creates a direct line of communication between you and other users."

"And you should know the Harbinger's OTHER special feature."

"...and under the right circumstances the commander can direct control of one of the connected soldiers."

"Correct. I'm sure you'll find this VERY useful."

1. We assume direct control to protect them. Though there may be issues if we're in a situation where we have to prioritize who to control at one time.

2. We train them to be able to defend themselves, but at the cost of not being able to do the job ourselves.

"Hm, it's good to have a Producer with a strong moral center." The Boss nods. "I won't force you to use that feature, but... it IS there if you ever need it."

"I'll keep that in mind." You say.

"Anyways, I'll be taking my leave now." The Boss begins to walk out. "Feel free to look around if you wish."

A little after the Boss leaves, you see Jenner enter.

"Huh, that was pretty impressive, standing up to the Boss like that." Jenner says, looking at the Harbinger console. "Takes guts."

"I'd like to believe that the code of ethics they drilled into us in the army still applies out here." You sigh. "Can I ask you a question?"

"Sure."

"What would you have said to him?"

"...I probably would have said yes." Jenner admits after a few seconds of silence.

>How about fuck you. You don't get to tell me what reading is required in order to participate in this quest, only the guy running it does.

I never said nor meant to imply that it was required in order to Participate. Only that it would be incredibly useful in order to understand over half the source material of the quest.
Would you seriously be this hostile if I was telling people "Hey you should really watch Idolmaster if you want to participate in a quest that's based on the show Idolmaster." ? Because that's basically what I'm doing.

It varies from company to company, but do you want to tell Rin, and by extension all of our future performance idols, the darker side of our business, or keep her in the dark about it?

There's no point in implanting her. Nanobots and implants are electrical systems by nature. Every time she uses her powers they would short out. Well, my base assumption was that the system simultaneously surpressed the target's consciousness using previously infiltrated nanotech and allowed the controller to remotely interface directly with the targets motor neuron system (thus eliminating the need to maintain most homeostatic dedicated neural systems). So the target being unconscious to begin with would just facilitate things.

How do you think it works?

This, my God this.

I like the quest, I like the concept, but if we're just going to play an asshole I can't possibly sympathise with then all sense of enjoyment goes straight out the window and I'd feel pretty disgusted to have participated in the clusterfuck, contrary to what I've hoped for when I joined.
>>
>>29144610
It's not us I don't trust, it's the boss. Backdoors are rather easy to instal.

>>29144624
Indeed. It's kinda hard to watch someone you agreed with try to argue your point like an idiot.

>>29144631
We're not perfect, but we should have some moral sense. The Harbinger crosses a line.
>>
>>29144659
If "it operates using quantums whatevers," was more or less truth, then we can reliably assume quantum encryption is a thing too, which means it's basically unbreakable from the outside.

As long as console/office integrity is maintained there's really no way to get involved in the process.

Operational security could be an issue irt the Boss or Jenner, but it seems unlikely that that will be an issue since this is a quest that's using a lot of idol tropes/tone. I don't think something like that would be introduced into the quest.
>>
>>29144659
>What about other people?
I thought it was made pretty clear that these things were expensive and rare specifically because they were nearly impossible to hack into. As for other people using it...well, put a password on it (as an over-simplistic option)
>>29144669
Well, honestly, there isn't much we can do about the boss. I just don't think purposefully deactivating parts of the computer (which might be nigh-impossible anyways) is an appropriate reaction to this
>>
>>29144581
your acting like if you own a car, you must constantly try to use it to kill people, for fucks sake, dont want to use it? DONT FUCKING USE IT

I cannot understand how nerfing something very useful just so you can sleep comfortably at night knowing something you would never do or use no longer exists, thats just fuckign retarded
>>
>>29144669
Here's what I think:
>one guy started blowing it over
>other guy started acting like a prick
>third guy decided to join the party
I just tried my best to explain why this is bullshit, but I am going to give up because I too was losing my temper.

>>29144662
I also like playing as the good guy, others think morality should be just thrown aside for this character, but my reasoning for allowing the use of Harbinger was that it was the lesser of two evils.
Still, this is way past the point of "debate"... it's basically a sad, sad clusterfuck.
>>
>>29144687
I'll believe that when Merc states it outright.
For now I'll keep my paranoia going, since that's a staple of the cyberpunk genre. Right, Cyberpunk Expert Guy?
>>
Can we stop arguing at this point I think its just trolling
>>
>>29144669
Well...at least you're admitting to following an entirely and completely arbitrary line.

Pre-meditated murder of children by children? A-OK. Adults exploiting children for the purposes of turning a profit? Also A-OK.

Harbinger...un-A-OK.

I personally disagree but I can at least your respect your courage for actually being able to articulate where you stand and being internally consistent.
>>
I think a good number of questions about the system need to be answered before we can reasonably decide if and when to use it.
Things like,
Does the system subvert free will? Can they be forced to do things that they don't want to do? How much does cooperation play a role in the effectiveness of the system?
Do you share head space with the subject? Can you share their senses? Can you 'read' their thoughts?
Are there any long term consequences on the subjects to repeated use of the system? Does it affect their mental or emotional well being?
What are the security features of the system? It was stated that the signal can't be hacked or jammed, but what about inside threats? Can anyone who has access to the physical control center and the password access the subjects at any time? Who has the password besides ourselves?

These all need to be answered before we can even consider using it at all. Until then we have to assume that it's harmful to our money-makers to use it.
>>
>>29144706
Well, quantum communications/et al are also a staple in the more high flying/sciency cyberpunk IPs but sure, paranoia in a cyberpunk thread is at least thinking mostly in-genre.

It's kind of a personal thing, like most morals. I agree there is a slight degree of hypocrisy in it, allowing and even supporting one evil while condemning another. But choice is the most important thing a person can process in this world, even moreso than life or honor or money.

We can prevent THESE children from murdering/being murdered by other children, but can do nothing to change the wider industry standard.
Same with exploitation. What actually counts as exploitation differs between people and between jurisdictions anyway so good luck even getting started on that one.

"Come on, if we we're going to be working together, we should be able to share a couple of stories with each other." You grin. "How about this, you tell me, and I'll tell you one of my old war stories. How about it?"

Jenner seems to pause for a second before nodding.

"Okay, but not here. I know this bar just down the block. It's quiet and nobody there asks questions." Jenner gets up and stretches. "Come on. I could use a drink."

"Yeah, I guess I'm overdue for one as well." You stand up and follow her.

You lock up the office and make sure that the security systems are online. This was a relatively safe neighborhood, and considering you weren't even on the map yet, you didn't really have much to fear from competitors either.

The walk down the block is silent one. Neither you nor Jenner speak, your path illuminated by the blindingly bright lights coming from Delta City's downtown district, like a miniature sun. It also served to illuminate the puffs of vapor from your breath as you walk.

Finally, you the two of you reach the bar. The holo sign above it read ELECTRIC SHEEP.

"That's... an odd name for a bar."

"What bar ever has a normal name?" Jenner responds as she opens the door.

"Point."

Inside was a lot cleaner than you expected. In fact, your probably could have mistaken it for a restaurant if Jenner hadn't already pointed you out to the place's true nature. The bar was also largely empty, though to be fair, it was a weeknight."

"Hey there." The bartender nods at your arrival. "What'll you be having?"

"Just two beers. Whatever you've got." Jenner says drops some bills on the counter. Evidently she was paying.

However, instead of sitting at the bar, Jenner leads you to one of the more secluded booths.

"Okay, so what's the story?" You ask, taking a sip from your beer.

Jenner sighs and downs nearly half her mug before speaking.

"So, a few years ago, christ it feels like a whole different life... Anyways, a few years ago I used to be a school teacher."

Huh, now that you think about it, Jenner definitely seemed to fit the "hot teacher" stereotype to a tee. Of course, you don't say that out loud. You just nod and take a sip from your own drink.

"I also had a brother back then. Not exactly the sharpest tool in the shed and really naive, but he was a nice kid. Anyways, our parents thought we weren't spending enough time together, so I arranged to vacation for just the two of us. Went down to Mexico."

Oh, you can see where this was going.

"So for the first few days, we go see the sights, buy some cheap crappy souvenirs, all that tourist stuff." Jenner's mouth forms the barest of grins as she recalls the memory. "But one day we were out in the market to buy some supplies and he just.. disappeared."

"Disappeared?" You blink.

"Yeah, and the most painful thing is I don't remember how it happened." Jenner frowns. "Did he wander off by himself? Was I distracted by something? Either way, once I looked back, he was just... gone."

"Do you know what happened to him?" You ask.

"No, we never found him." Jenner sighs and pretty much finishes her drink and waves at the bartender for a refill. "Consensus was that he got picked up by a Mexican cartel. One of the ones that likes kidnapping rich tourists and selling their organs and salvaged augs on the black market."

"Jesus." You croak.

"After that, I just... couldn't stay. I packed up and left for Delta City for a new start, and that's when I met the Boss."

It's not mind control. It's temporary body-jacking with consciousness suppression. Essentially the system puts the girl to sleep (or, if your model Harbinger leaves her conscious but detached from any for of physical self control, your choice) and let's you puppet her body for awhile. No mental coercion involved.
