1d100 for skill checks. 1-4 crit success, 96-100 crit fail. One of the first three rolls must be below the DC to pass.

Emily interrupted your game to ask for moral support in breaking up with her boyfriend, only it wasn’t Mike standing outside your window. You don’t know what it was. It smelled like burning plastic and hot metal, it set the end of your bat on fire, and both you and Emily now have what appears to be a bad case of sunburn.

Your room is just how you left it, not fifteen minutes ago. You and Emily stand silently for a few moments, facing the window. As one you march towards it and peer through the glass. Nothing. You make very certain there is absolutely nothing out of the ordinary that you can see before you open the window a crack.

Smells like rain.

Emily sags with relief. “It’s gone.”

She doesn’t say ‘he’s gone’ and you don’t correct her. You can even see your bat lying on the ground.

Some of the other dorm residents threw soda on you to put out your smouldering clothes, and you’re sticky. And you smell like scorched cotton. You need another shower. Your glasses got damp, and you’re not sure how much heat they were exposed to either; you’ve powered them down for now.

You're not really good at this stuff, but Emily's looking both upset and guilty.

"Are you sure you're okay?" you ask.

Emily shakes her head a little. "No, I mean. I'm fine, except for this burn." She touches her cheek gingerly. "Ash, what the hell happened? Oh God, this is my fault. I was the one who made you go out there."

"It's okay, it's okay. I don't think anyone could have predicted that. Whatever it was." You pat her shoulder and she smiles at you.

"My hands are shaking," she says. "You were so brave Ash. I can't believe you tried to tell that guy off." She laughs a bit nervously and then to your utter surprise throws her arms around your neck. "I'm so glad you were there. I owe you bigtime, you know?"

You flinch, your arms held down by your sides. You don't really hang around with huggy people, and you weren't expecting it. "I'm sorry," she draws back sharply, sensing your discomfort. "Oh, you're covered in soda. How about you shower and I'll break out some emergency chocolate?"

It's probably a good idea. You make sure the window is fully shut, and the lock in place before heading off to the shower. There are no bugs, just hot water and steam, and when you get back out Emily is holding your bat.

"Jess brought it back," she says. You have no clue who Jess is. The end is all charred and blackened, but the bat still retains its integrity. It's cool and damp from the rain. "I told her we were doing a science experiment," Emily said.

>"We should report this to someone."

Examine the glasses to make sure they're going to be functional.

"Emily... can I see your phone for a second?"

Check the missed calls from Mike. See if there's anything... weird going on. With her permission, of course.
>>
>>29178579
Good idea. There's a chance it was a freak coincidence, but...unlikely.
>>
>>29178476
>>29178579

>>
>>29178544
>>29178518
You rest the bat against the end of your bed rather than putting it away for now.

"So where's that chocolate?" you ask. You realise the microwave's going.

"Ah, nearly ready," Emily says. "I thought this definitely deserved fresh mug cake."

"You have all the ingredients for- actually, I'm not surprised." Emily takes up more than her fair share of the bar fridge. You sit at your desk.

>>29178619
"Emily, can I see your phone for a second?"

"Um, sure." She hands it to you. "I should probably call Mike and let him know we're okay."

"He didn't know anything was wrong in the first place," you point out. The last call was from Mike. It doesn't look like he's tried to get through since, however. "But maybe you should call him, see if anything weird's happened on his end."

"Ha, I knew you got good marks for a reason. That's a great idea." You get the impression Emily was hoping for a reason to call Mike. The microwave dings and Emily swops you a mug full of hot chocolate cake for her phone.

It's too hot to eat, so while Emily calls Mike and you wait for it to cool, you take a look at your glasses.

The light rain wasn't enough to cause any damage; your glasses are water resistant, after all, and the soda was aimed at your clothes, and missed the glasses entirely. Now all you have to do is see if the heat's caused any damage. You start running diagnostics.

"Mike! Are you okay?" Emily's managed to get through. "Well, cause things have been a bit weird here. Where are you? - No, I'm not judging you. It's Saturday night; go party, I don't care. But you definitely weren't here at any point, right?"

You listen with half an ear, paying more attention to your glasses.

"Then what the hell was all that 'you get what you deserve' stuff?"

Just break up with him already, you think. Your glasses look okay. The battery seems to be unaffected. You sigh with relief, and put them back on your head. That was lucky.

"Pfft. There are boys other than you, Mike. I'll talk to you later." Emily hangs up. "I think he was trying to make me jealous by going to some party and calling me." She puts down her phone and picks up her mug of cake. "A few hours ago, that probably would have worked. He hasn't noticed anything strange though."

"How are your glasses?" she asks.

"They seem fine. No immediate problems anyway." The cake's pretty good.

"Um, I really don't think that would be very...good."

Emily's biting her lips and nodding seriously. You aren't convinced she's going to just drop the idea, however. This really the first time you two have been anything other than polite and cordial. It's like you looked at each other as actual people for the first time.

"Let's discuss it later. I need to make sure these glasses are all right. I won't be able to replace them until next term at least, and I need them to be in one piece. You don't mind, do you?" There really is only one way to escape right now. You scrape the last of the cake from the bottom of your mug with the spoon. "But the cake was great, thank you."

"Uh huh. You can't date a game, Ash."

You don't dignify that with an answer. All you feel is vertigo.

You're back in the city, standing by the fountain in the marketplace. It's later now. A lot of the stalls have closed, and the streets are much emptier. The fisherman and the piece of tile have gone. Only fish remain.

The cafes and bars around the edge of the markets are still open. There's no sign of Lily.

"Hi Liandra," she says cheerfully.

"What are you up to?" you ask.

"I'm helping a friend right now. That's the downside of this artifact. Everyone knows you can get there fast; I do a lot of rescue missions."

You wind your way through the closed stalls and choose one of the stairways at random. You ascend past doorways to little houses, take a walkway across a canal, and keep climbing. You can peer through the occasional lighted window, although mostly you see drowsy NPCs writing or getting ready for bed.

You see those little white birds sleeping in small, soft communities under the eaves of houses, occasionally twittering sleepily. Someone laughs loudly from down below and then a splash. You see a naked (game-naked at least) male player swimming in a canal while his friend watches from the bank.

You wander aimlessly. Under a lamp you see a cluster of those moths, and as you approach they flutter away. One of them clearly carrying something about an inch long and fascinating. You feel it again, that desperate tug. That was yours, once, whatever it is. You feel it in your bones.

You've reduced the swarm by half, and the woman is swinging her mace in a circle, a pile of dead moths at her feet. "That's more like it!" she says with satisfaction. Her friend gives up on his trousers and starts stabbing at them with a dagger he took from his pile of gear.

You climb out of the canal and haul yourself up onto the bank. You swop your bow for your staff and start swinging at the moths. Naked guy isn't a lot of use with his dagger, but the three of your manage to knock most of them out of the air.

Eventually the survivors flutter off.

"Well, that was a new one," the woman says. She's got short white hair, and is pretty brawny. "I didn't know you could piss them off. Thanks for helping out," she says to you. "What did you do to make them mad?"

Her friend, still in his underwear, stretches out on the ground with a groan, and you can see his bites starting to heal.

"Yeah, I mean, even a handful of them would be no challenge at all. You need a lot to make it count," he friend says.

"I'm Liandra," you introduce yourself.

"I'm Trish and this is Shrike," the woman says, gesturing over her shoulder at her friend. "He's not normally naked."

"Hello," he says. His wounds, fairly slight, have already healed, and he sits up. "You heard her earlier," he says to Trish. "She's a Prophet. She could help us."

You're a bit uncertain. You hide the piece of pottery - you think it's pottery - away without letting the others see. You'll look at it later, although right now you feel happy to know it's there; you have a warm sense of satisfaction, like you've got something to look forward to.

"What does it involve? I thought only Avatars could wake them."

Shrike starts putting his clothes on while Trish kicks the corpses of the moths into the canal, where the fish quickly make short work of them.

"Avatars can energise them," Trish says. "Anyone can wake them, but they're just slow. Really though, our problem is one of people. Two aren't really enough. City slaves are tough to get to."

"Why do you want to wake them? Curiosity?"

"Well yeah," Shrike says. He approaches, now fully dressed in lightweight leather armour, he also carries a bow similar to yours. "We've been out the front gates a fair bit, but it's pretty well explored. We want to see whats on the other side of the chasm to the east. And that means waking the slave, and hoping none of those bridge busters break it before it's finished."

"Really?" Trish grins. "That's great news. We might actually get the bridge finished. A slave on each end will finish it twice as fast."

"Yeah, we should try for the slave here as soon as possible," Shrike agrees.

"Why do people keep breaking bridges?" you ask.

"Hm." Trish sighs and shrugs.

"Because some people are arseholes," Shrike says. "It really costs you if you die, so some people want to prevent other players for going out into the world so much."

"To be fair," Trish adds. "The last time someone found the city slave, everyone knew where it was. Whenever it was put back to sleep, someone woke it up. And then, one day, it was hidden again. Somewhere else. Once something gets found too often, it gets hidden again."

"So what," Shrike says. "Half the fun is finding it."

"A lot of people find it frustrating. If a bridge stays up for too long, too many people get across, and whole bits of land get reshuffled."

"Why can't you get enough people?"

"We could join up with Mason's group, but then we'd have to split anything we find five ways. And Mason's so well known probably other people would join on the way. Less for everyone."

"Better if we go at night," Shrike says.

"Yes, we are go," Shrike grins.

"So they tear the bridges down because the land getting shuffled would be inconvenient for them? That's pretty selfish."

"Getting places is the point of the game," Trish says. "It would get a bit boring if you could just walk across a bridge to get anywhere you wanted to."

"I suppose things would be boring without an excuse for PVP."

"It makes more sense than randomly assigning two sides that fight over nothing," Trish says.

Shrike doesn't look convinced, but he doesn't argue either. "As long as we get across. It looks nice over there."

Trish hefts her mace over her shoulder, "Let's go."

"Adventure!" Shrike says. They lead you up a flight of stairs, and across the city, always heading in what you assume is an easterly direction - you can't actually tell. You've lost sight of the markets, and have no other reference point.

They don't talk much, but seem to be in good spirits. Occasionally you have to cross one of the stone walkways between the towers. Each can be turned via a stone lever.

They stop at a window in a tower, and point at a huge building across a street. You notice there are no doors, and no walkways connect to its towers.

"We think it's in there. It has to be. Well, everyone's worked out that much. No one's figured out how to get in, except us. We think, anyway."

Your glasses chime. It's midnight.

>Lie down to talk.

You take out your mirror, and try to contact Lily, wondering if she's even still online.

When she answers, you can see she's lying on the ground, the earth under her head black and loamy. She looks grim and you can see dried blood encrusted in her hair. You can hear thunder in the background.

"Lily? Oh my god, are you ok- wait, that would have been a dumb question. What happened? Do you need a rescue?"

She smiles at you, "Thank you for the offer, but you're days away at best. I'm okay for now. I survived." She takes a deep breath. "There was a lot of meat in the Thunderlands - that storm you saw. They took control of the lightning bridge, and just attacked everyone they saw until we fought them off."

"I don't know why. This has never happened before. We managed to kill most of them now, but we're going to bust the lightning bridge. Untether the Thunderlands, which is what a bunch of people wanted to do anyway."

"Liandra," she sits up. "Look." She goes through her pockets and holds up three shards of mirror. "Some of the meat had these. Something strange is going on. Mason's not online right now, but if you see him, can you ask him to put his feelers out - see what anyone else knows? The meat's up to something."

"What?" Shrike asks. "How? The Thunderlands is really hard to get to."

"They held a lightning bridge. My friend says they're going to break it."

"Wow," Trish says. They stare at you with amazement.

"So you don't know anything?"

"Well sometimes big groups of people get together just to PvP. It's happened before, but lay siege to a city, that would take a lot of organizing."

"You remember that guy," Shrike says.

"The "player hunter"?" Trish wiggles her fingers in air quotes. "He was an idiot, and hope he fell off an edge."

"Yeah, but he was saying something about a new guild or something, remember? Maybe this is it." He shrugs. "Sorry, that's all I can think of that's relevant."

Lily gets up off the ground, the image on the mirror showing a storm torn sky for a few moments, and glimpse of her floating lawn. "Okay," she says. "I'm going to go and help bust the bridge. "Let's go and get some levels." You don't really care all that much about the save, but the the thought of treasure and exp points fire you up.

"Rock on," Shrike says.

"How old are you again?" Trish asks, rolling her eyes. They lead you out across a walkway between two towers. "Okay, here's the plan." She points to a window, high on one of the towers of the building opposite. "When this walkway is in mid swing, it should be possible to jump across to there."

"And if it's not we die horribly but quickly," Shrike adds.

"I'll go first," Trish says. "And I'll catch you two if you miss, or I'll try. Gotta get your timing right though." She nods at Shrike and he hurries back to the wheel. You back off to give Trish a run-up, and watch closely to determine timing.

Shrike swings the walkway back and forth a couple of times before Trish launches herself off the end. The low gravity sends her neatly through the window.

A few moments later she sticks her head out. "All clear. Shrike'll have to spin the wheel and run for his turn, so you're next, Liandra."

"-zythisiscrazythiSISCRAZYTHISISCRAZYAAAAAARGH!" You leap off into space, swinging your arms like a champion longjumper.

Trish catches your arm as you leap through the window, but she didn't have to. The lowered gravity really made a difference, and when you glance back you're stunned by the gap you jumped.

You're in a room tiled with lapis lazuli. Stairs lead up, and stairs lead down. There's a carved wooden table with a vase on it, but the vase is empty when you peer into it.

"Heere I gooo!" Shrike's foot catches on the edge of the window as he hurls himself through and he lands on his face, but safe and sound.

"You okay?" Trish asks.

"I'm good." He gets up and immediately peers into the vase as well. "Nothin'."

"Okay we're halfway up one of the front towers," Trish says, keeping her voice down. "The slave will be underneath somewhere, probably." She glances at your bow. "I'll go first since you guys are ranged."

Your way is lit by ornate wrought iron lanterns. The entire building seems to be lined with mosaics, and the affect is a little eye-watering.

You creep downstairs, Shrike and Trish trying to be as quiet as possible. At the base of the tower, you come to a crossroads.

You could steal the vase, but you only have a belt pouch and a quiver to carry it in, so you'd have to hold it.

You head left, Trish going first. Shrike follows behind you, every so often turning and making sure nothing is coming up behind. The corridor appears to be perfectly straight, and ends in a right angle. You hear a clumping sound from around the corner. Heavy, metallic footsteps.

"Palace Guard," Shrike murmurs. "Go for the eyes." Trish is already moving, even as it swings a fist at her. She ducks out of the way and smashes her mace into the construct's left knee.

You hit again, and again you get a satisfying shower of sparks. It's got one eye left, and Shrike skewers it with another arrow. It shudders, spraying sparks.

"That's not enough to kill it," Shrike explains. "But that's all arrows can do." Swinging wildly, Trish evades its fists, puts one foot on its knee, hauls herself up its chest with one hand and brings her mace down on its head. It rings hollowly, and then tumbles down with a clatter.

Trish steps back, victorious, and brings her mace down on its chest. The chest springs open, and you hear the rattling of coins.

"Door here," she says. It's carved wood, painted to match the walls and floor. She tries the handle but it's locked. She doesn't waste any time swinging her mace at it, splintering the lock entirely and kicking the door open.

On the other side is what looks like a bedroom and in it is one of the flat-faced NPCs of this city, wrestling with a crossbow. Trish recoils as he fires it into her side.

No, let's not PK without cause. Besides, inside the city, there may be enforcers, or it might be a neutral zone. Let's not be "That Girl" just yet.

"I'll handle this, you take the other thing," you say.

They don't argue. Trish yanks the crossbow bolt out of her side with a grunt of pain and bounds back the way she came.

"Yell if you need backup," Shrike says as he follows her. She's going down to the corner, to pull the same trick again.

The NPC is firing his crossbow. Your companions can't see you, but they can hear what's going on.

Doesn't matter. We could use allies more than we could use the XP from killing players. Besides, with those Meat carrying around broken mirrors, I'd be a bit hesitant about attacking people in-game anyway.
>>
>>29185289
Kick him in the balls, disarm him, and smack him on the back of the head with the butt of the crossbow.

"And STAY down!"

You swing your staff at him, but trip on the fancy carpet, and miss entirely, crashing into another one of those little tables with vase on it. You knock the vase to the floor and it breaks. The crossbow bolt, at least, goes wide.

The NPC doesn't try and reload, instead drawing a dagger from his flowing robes and running at you with it while you're still crashing into furniture.

1d100 DC 80 to dodge.

You dart around behind the little table, out of range of his dagger without much trouble. Good thing nobody saw that. Nobody who's going to live to tell about it, anyway.

You can hear sounds of battle from outside, and the occasional 'Alert.' but you can't tell which side, if any, has the upper hand.

Sadly you were too late.

You smack him solidly around the head with your staff. He hisses at you.

"Intruder! Guards!" Well, the guards have been delayed. He kicks the table aside and jabs you with his dagger, but you fend him off with your staff.

Your too close to draw you bow now, unless you turn and run for the other side of the room.

You give it all you've got, and this time you manage to draw blood. He staggers back clutching his head.

You hear a great crash from the corridor. Your companions are victorious, by the sounds of things.

The NPC turns and runs for the door.

it shouldn't matter? If people roll for different things then they would be tempted to switch votes should the rolls fail.

That is just stupid.

>>29185991
(Third roll for the winning vote. It gets in.)

Coolly, you let him run, smoothly notching an arrow and letting it fly. It catches Shrike just as the NPC runs onto his dagger.

Shrike recoils as your arrow smashes into his cheekbone. Both he and the NPC fall, the NPC dead, and Shrike trying to hold his face together and whimpering.

Oh crap. "Shrike!" you hear Trish call.

"...uh... shit..."

Help him. Help him NOW. Drag him to the NPC's bed and make him lie down before we bar the door and make sure Tish is still alive and fighting.

"The whole situation's gone tits-up! Abort?"
>>
>>29186075
>Run over to help.
"Suck it up, princess. I got my ribcage caved in and kept fighting."

>Third roll for the winning vote.

Might want to make that clearer in the OP next time.
>>
>>29186093 >>29186113
>>29186096
So take the votes separately from the rolls? I could do that. It means it's less of a problem if some people forget to roll. Alright. We'll do that in future. Whatever the final vote, the first three rolls are what counts.

~~
You run over to Shrike, and Trish is doing the same. She's slowed by the wound in her ribs and you reach him first.

You help him lie down on the ground.

"Take it out, please," he mumbles, gesturing with his free hand to your arrow which is lodged somewhere under his cheekbone.

Trish arrives as you grip it and pull it out of his cheek, as kindly and as fast as you can. You can see exposed bone and teeth as gore runs into his hair and onto the floor. He shivers in pain, but once the arrow's out, he relaxes.

"Ta."

Trish flops down next to him. "That could have gone better. Keep an eye out while we're down, please."

Their wounds start to close. You can here distant 'Alert's but so far no footsteps your way.

"That was dumb of me," Shrike says, when he can talk properly again.
~~~
And that's where I have to call it. I have to make a phone call. Thank you for playing, everyone.
Keep an eye on twitter for the next update. I'll try for tomorrow, earlier than today.
And Happy New Year.
I just want to note that in your current system about 1 in 6 times you ask for rolls we will have a crit. Make of that what you will.
