1d100 for skill checks. 1-4 crit success, 96-100 crit fail. One of the first three rolls must be below the DC to pass.

You’ve finally found a piece of Arcadia, although you haven’t had the chance to look at it properly yet. While you were in game you met two other players called Trish and Shrike, who invited you to help them awaken a slave somewhere in the city. You’ve also received the news from Lily that a large number of meat attacked a place called the Thunderlands. Lily and others repelled the attack, and are planning to destroy the lightning bridge to prevent it happening again.

You, Trish and Shrike infiltrated a palace, defeated two metal guards and one NPC. In doing so, both your companions got injured, Shrike when you accidentally shot him in the face with your bow. Right now they’re resting and regaining their hitpoints, while elsewhere in the palace you can hear more guards calling, “Alert.”

Your glasses are running off mains power. Your battery is 100%

You go over to the dead NPC and start patting him down. He's wearing the robes favoured by these kinds of NPCs, but you find a Key on a chain around his neck, nine Steel Crossbow Bolts, a Crossbow with Bronze Fretwork, a Fine Dagger, and 19 Coins.

Trish is watching Shrike's face go back to it's normal shape, but Shrike's looking at the bow.

"If you really need something, take it," he says.

"She needs a new staff more than anything."

You can hear the clumping of mechanical feet. More than two, in your estimation.

"Ha! Well, it happens. I'll be a bit more careful about sticking my head around corners though. Here," he offers the bow to Trish. "You need a ranged weapon, even if it's not your style."

Trish gets to her feet an accepts it with a sigh. "Fine."

You divvy up the coins as fairly as you can, giving yourself seven and the other two six.

Trish stares down the corridor. "Come on, let's hope there's something good in the room." Shrike gingerly touches his face, and then gets to his feet as well.

The room you're standing in appears to be a bedroom. While the walls and ceiling are as fine as anywhere else in this building, the furniture is comparatively ordinary by comparison. There's a chest of drawers and a table, the remains of the vase you smashed are all over the floor.

Trish starts on the chest of drawers, Shrike pulls back the curtains. "Hey, a door!" inset into the wall is a bronze door. It's pretty small; even you would have to stoop to fit in.

You fling yourself down and look under the bed. In the floor is a trapdoor, you can see the pull ring. "Trapdoor under here."

"Second key," Trish says. "And money."

As well as the clumping feet, you can hear faster footsteps, and someone shouting, "Quick, stop them!" You think the guards might not fit through the door, but the NPCs definitely will.

"We can get out this way," you suggest.

"I agree," Shrike says. "Let's move the bed."

Trish stops pawing through chest and takes one end of the bed, while you and Shrike take the other end. It's good, solid wood, with a couple of pillows and silk covers. As you and Shrike lift it unevenly, one of the pillows falls to the floor, and something clatters to the ground.

"A third key. Did this guy collect them?" Shrike looks at it and shrugs. As you shift the bed off the trapdoor, you see that it too is made of bronze, and has five keyholes in it. "Aw crap."

>"Let's go through the other door instead."

"The bed can buy us some time." The others nod and you carry it across the room. Trish closes the remains of the door and then heaves the bed up against it. Just in time too, as you hear someone pelting down the hallway.

They start hammering on the door. "Open up! Further resistance will result in your deaths."

"If we surrender will you let us go?" Trish shrugs. "Worth a try," she mouths.

Shrike kneels down at the trapdoor and starts trying the keys in the keyholes. You need to find two more.

You fling up the rug, and see a key lying on the tiled floor. "Four!" you call and stoop and toss it to Shrike. He catches it. He's managed to assign two keys already, and as the number of options dwindle he soon places the others.

"No, actually. The punishment for intruding is death. Guards, knock this door down!"

Trish braces herself and holds the bed in place while something heavy smashes into it from the other side. "Gah!" She holds it.

>>29199671
There's only one vase in the room, and it's broken, you bend down and scrabble through the pieces. Fifth key.

"Got it!"

"Wonderful." Shrike takes it and fits it in the last lock. You can hear the door splintering, and the bedspread tearing as Trish holds the line.

You and Shrike lift up the heavy bronze trapdoor, and he vaults down into the darkness below. "Down the hatch!"

There's no handle on the inner side of the trapdoor, so you have to lift it up and dive in, letting it slam shut behind you. Instantly, you are plunged into total darkness.

With a jolt you land on a slippery stone slope. You have just enough time to point your staff the right way to stop it snagging before you start to slide.

It's black as pitch, and once you start picking up speed, you're not sure what direction you're going in, only that it's mostly downward. You fly along, the air whistling past your ears and the sound of your own decent soon drown out any sounds from up above.

You feel like you must be halfway to the center of the earth before you see a dim, cool glow up ahead, and then the tunnel abruptly ends and you're flung into space.

A moment later you land on Shrike.

You hear Trish laugh, and you raise your head.

"Chicks always throwing themselves at me," Shrike grumbles, somewhat muffled by the fact that you're sitting on his back. You're both sprawled on a large patch of deep, soft moss. Trish is dusting herself off and offers you a hand up.

"Um, I didn't try to land on your or anything." Aw. Some things clearly can't be fixed by a pair of pixillated boobs.

He takes you seriously, "I know. Trish took her sweet time getting off my back, that's all."

Trish chuckles. "Serves you right for landing on your face. At least she's probably a bit lighter than I am." Shrike rolls out of the way, in case someone less attractive falls on him next, and then gets to his feet.

Around you, are the ruins of a city, or part of one. It's as if a giant had pushed over buildings like the one above and then buried them. The white marble is now greenish with moss and cracked with age. You can't see how big this cavern is, but it seems to hold a whole city block at least. Moss grows thickly on the ground, and light filters in from cracks above, a little unbelievably given how long it took you to slide down here.

The other stand up and look around. You can hear the sound of water dripping slowly somewhere, and you can smell damp stone.

"I know this place," Trish says, and wanders over to one of the buildings, frowning at it.

"These three doors, this building," Trish continues, as you and Shrike follow her. "This was how you got into the area the slave used to be hidden before it moved. If you picked the wrong door, you ended up in a maze of tiny little rooms. I actually like this new way better."

"They just smashed the whole part of the city down and buried it?" Shrike gazes up at the skewed walls and tumbled towers.

You're looking up too, and there's something funny about that wall. You narrow your eyes and suddenly you realise it's not just a bare mossy wall, there's something clinging to it, about the size of a man and perfectly camouflaged. It's got four limbs and a tail, and two huge eyes that rotate independently, as they keep an eye on all three of you. Its hands are very human.

You look around, and realise there are about half a dozen of them clinging to the ruins.

You and Shrike let your arrows fly at the same time, and both find their mark in the lizard's head. It recoils and then lets go of the wall sliding to the ground in an ungraceful heap. It's colour changes too, to a dull stoney brown rather than the mottled white it had been a moment ago.

You have slain moss stalker.

You hear a familiar chime, and you're pleased to remember that it heralds the acquisition of an experience point.

"Argh-" Trish is snatched off her feet as a stalker opens it's mouth and plants the end of about fifteen feet of ropey tounge on Trish's arm. It hauls her off the ground towards its gaping mouth, and she hefts her mace one-handed.

The other stalkers smile and open their mouths.

You draw bead on the stalker currently hauling Trish up towards its mouth, and your arrow once again finds its mark, thudding deep into its ribs. Trish swings her mace one-handed, and batters its head.

You have slain moss stalker.

It and Trish fall to the ground, Trish landing on her feet. The tongue is still attached to her shoulder. She ignores it for now.

Something cool and damp slams into your back and pulls you off your feet. You're much lighter than Trish, and you are drawn towards the stalker's maw at an alarming rate of speed.

You can't turn around to shoot it.

The stalker hisses as you finally part the tongue from its owner and you thump back down onto the moss. Trish sees your escape and changes direction to go to Shrike's aid.

The tongue is still stuck to your back and now your dagger. The stalker opens its mouth and gurgles at you, the stump of its tongue waving around. Then it runs down the wall towards you.

You have slain moss stalker.

Shrike has managed to kill the stalker menacing him, with Trish's help, and she flings herself in front of him to catch another tongue to the midsection. This time she has her arms free and her raises her mace above her head as the stalker hauls her in.

Shrike had dropped his bow when he'd been snagged, and still trailing a corpse he's down on the moss retrieving it.

Shrike raises his bow and fires at the last stalker.

You split up, but don't go far, keeping everyone within line of sight. Maybe the stalkers have gone, and maybe they haven't.

The cavern wall seems pretty solid to you, and your resigning yourself to a long crawl in the dark when the thread in your hand wriggles like a live thing. You might even have dropped it, if the idea of dropping it, leaving it behind, abandoning it, wasn't one of the most horrible and painful ideas you've ever refused to consider.

There's a door. In one of the buildings. It's the most intact one you've seen so far. You can see the other Piece of Arcadia in your pocket, too, almost humming.

>Call the others over.
>Approach the door with the thread.
>Move away.
>Write in.
>Quit Arcadia.

Wooo mindcontrol.

You take two steps forward and with one last joyful wiggle, the thread disappears from your hand.

And so does the door.

Where it once stood is a doorway of black rock, and beyond it, another massive chasm. Bigger, even. It's more of a landscape than a mere cave. You can see a lake, glowing gently, and what you take to be forests, but it's hard to see. You hear distant howling. It doesn't seem to have an end, instead a river snakes off into the dark.

The ground is at least a couple of hundred feet below you.

The others realise you've found something, and join you at the doorway. As you watch, a flock of very black things with a wingspan you can only guess at, fly past, only the faint sound of air over their skin making any noise at all.

"The Underground," Shrike says. "You found a doorway."

~~~
And with that, we're nearly at autosage, and I have to call a halt for now anyway. Sorry it was a bit shorter today.
I'll put a character levelling guide of some kind up on the pastebin, and I expect I'll be back either on the weekend or Monday. I'll keep twitter updated.
Thanks for playing, everyone.
You've got a way with cliffhangers.
Happy New Year!
>>
>>29202937
That wasn't a cliffhanger.
>>
>>29202956
We found a massive new area ripe for exploration, and you don't call that a cliffhanger? Okay, Senior Pedant.
>>
>>29203048
But that's not a cliffhanger. Calling it a cliffhanger is wrong. Being pedantic has nothing to do with it.
If we were standing on the edge of the chasm, and the rock started to crumble from underneath our feet, and THEN the thread ended, THAT would be a cliffhanger.
Literally.
Because we would be hanging from a cliff.
