You retreat back down the knoll. Only one is needed to deal with an injured human whelp. A pack of humans with their weapons will be far too much to handle.

You raise your snout to the air, trying to pick the smell of man out from the burning cold. Instead you find the musk of horse. Clumsy and predictable creatures the humans sit upon, they’ll have to be in one of the low paths. The apes can go nearly anywhere, but their slaves are simple.

You trot along the ice, the steam of your breath lost in the storm. They carry fire and are frantic. The human in the lead is trying to fight through the snow without a horse, but it is too deep for him. He breaks through with every step and is nearly swimming through the drifts at times, but his is greatly distraught. He cries out into the night far more than the others do.

The pack of humans stop at an intersection of paths and split into two groups. One sticks close to the edge of the hill where the rocks still protrude from the snow, the other begins to spread through the woods and will be upon you soon. You will not have time to eat the injured human.

You begin to growl as you back away from them. Your barking echoes off the stone face of the hill, scattering around the woods. The horses shriek and rear, but the humans keep control of them. They begin to shout to one another and one jumps off his horse. He trudges through the snow carrying the strange branch that throws sticks.

You bark again as you see the other pack continue on, and he turns to face you. You turn and run, trying to stay out of sight, but he’s found you. You run so fast you break through the ice and fall and scramble back up. Thankfully, they don’t attack you, but you didn’t manage to slow them at all. You arrive back at the knoll just in time to see the humans come upon your pack leader. The human in front falls to his knees and tears off his metal cap to scream into the night.

In great anguish he barks to his men and points at your father. Before you can intervene, or he can escape, they fling their pointy sticks at him. One catches him in his rear leg and he cries out, trying to continue limping forward.

You snarl and dash down the slope. The three men are completely focused on attacking your father and don’t even hear your approach before you are on them. You leap into the air and bite into the man who hand wounded your pack leader. He had been atop a horse, but you rip him free, shredding through the wools on his chest. He shouts out and tries to push you away, but you duck and weave around his hands, tearing more and more at his protection.

When he pulls a stone out and tries to smash it into you, you snap up and grab his wrist. You snap half the bones with a single bite and he screams in pain as blood fills your mouth. He drops the stone, but you are forced to jump off of him as the man who wields fire rears his horse around to swipe at you with the fire. He doesn’t come close to you, but startles the free horse and it rears back, flailing it’s hooves around before running off.

It stumbles through the deep snow and its leg twists. It neighs violently as it falls to the side and starts thrashing, trying to regain its feet.

Another of the pointy sticks lands near your feet and you jump back. The man who had followed you from the other group is atop the knoll. But your father has escaped.

There is a fine line between bravery and stupidity.

You growl and bark as you back away from them. The horse will have to be put down, there is no way for them to save it. If you time it right, you should be able to scavenge a meal. But not now.

You turn and run as you see the human on the knoll pull back on the large branch again. One of the pointy sticks slams into a nearby oak as you run into the woods, chasing after the trail of blood your father is leaving. The blood is coming down his leg quite severely and you can see and smell drips of it with every step, marring the white snow. A first year whelp would be able to follow him like this, and humans have become good at tracking.

The trail goes surprisingly far, winding through the woods, avoiding heavy brush and staying in the gentle slopes. The humans are following behind you, but are making slow progress. You finally find him crossing the iced over river. In spring, this river is fast and strong, lethal to try to swim through as it tumbles down the rocks. Even in summer it is dangerous, but manageable. Gravel slopes down to it beneath the snow on either side, where trees cannot grow.

Your pack leader is still limping, and the humans will catch up to him if you do nothing.

There’s nothing you can do to help him directly, but you won’t let the last of your family perish. You test the air, the storm is dying down some and you can tell that the branch carrying human is close behind you. Further beyond him the two others that had been with him are riding their horses. Neither of you were breaking through the ice, so only the faintest of claw marks can be found, much to shallow to be found at night, especially without a fire. He’ll have to follow the blood.

The strong winds of the storm had caught the low branches of a gnarled tree, packing snow on them till they dipped down to the ground. You hide yourself behind this, just above where you are certain he will be, and crawl into the shadows. Your nose twitches.

You can smell a squirrel, perhaps multiple. Your mouth begins salivating. Then you hear the human stomping through the ice, his extra skins wrapped tight around his body. He stops at the edge of the trees and breathes out before taking the branch into his hands again.

Your pack leader is almost to the other side.

The human kneels down just beyond the trees and pulls a stick back on the branch, tugging on the string. Your father will soon be across, but is still in danger. You leap from hiding, baring your fangs. In his surprise, he releases the stick and it flings off randomly, but he manages to throw his hands in the way. You bite down on the thick furs he has wrapped around his soft flesh, and try to tear.

When you break away to try to get to his exposed neck, he shoves the branch in your way, catching you in the mouth. You clamp down and crack it, but he muscles you back and throws you to the side. You run up the bank, fighting against collapses of the powdery snow. You manage to find purchase beneath the drifts of fresh snow and scramble up before the sticks strike you. Instead, they plant harmlessly in the snow near your feet.

The wind shifts as you duck behind the brush. Now it blows down the river, from the mountain heads. You can smell humans, far too many clustered together to count. Many more than are staying on the great hill. But there is another scent. An earthy and dusty scent, something you’ve never smelled before.

You don’t think you should go upriver.

The humans chasing you have stopped at the edge of the ice, pacing back and forth. They’re scared it will not be able to take their weight.

You find your pack leader curled up beneath a pine tree, burrowed in the dry needles. He’s already chewed out the stick, but he’s still bleeding, if slowly. Seems he has no strength to continue for the night and must rest. But he at least ate some of the human, and you have had nothing.

Your hungering stomach drives you back out. You don’t think you’ll have to worry about him, although this side of the river isn’t your territory. The smell of horse, and the memory of the taste of its flesh drives you back across the river, far down river from where the humans are. The storm is almost over, so you can easily track the smell of blood back to the edge of the hill.

You haven’t seen any of the humans, but you can smell them. Some are wandering the woods in search of you, but one is nearby. There is no sign of the child’s corpse, or the human leader. The horse has been abandoned, it’s throat slit to bleed into the snow. Snow has started to accumulate on it and a few crows are pecking at its hide. You lick your jowls, saliva dripping down to the snow.

Although wolves are monogamous and typically mate for life, this is not always the case. It used to be believed that in the event that one of the couple dies, the other wolf will not seek out another mate, but this is not true. Wolves have been known to have many mates in their lifetime, even simultaneously. Wolves will sometimes even leave their mates in search of a new one. There have even been cases where in a single wolf pack, there are two breeding females to one male.

Something nudges you. It’s warm. Snow starts getting thrown away from you but you don’t have the strength to open your eyes. You’re just so cold. A gentle tongue starts digging through your fur, pressing against your wounds. The pressure hurts, but you know it’ll help. Then something presses against you, a warm body to ward off the snow.

A great bellowing blare rolls through the trees. Then again, and again. An unnatural and infernal roar that no animal would ever make. It’s a human’s horn. The body next to you stirs and rises, shaking the snow off. They start licking your face until you open your eyes. You didn’t have enough rest, but you know you’ll only get weaker. The great strength that was once in your body has been replaced by an infection of seeping ice.

The sun has just risen above the mountains, bringing blinding light down to the snow covered valley. The wolf before you isn’t a member of your pack. She must be from the neighboring territory, the one you’re intruding on. Why she isn’t with her pack you don’t know.

You can hear more human horns, and men shouting the clashing of stones echo through the trees. The sound of men killing one another and saturating the land with their blood. But there is also the trumpeting of some strange beast.

You’re so hungry you can’t stand. But the other wolf doesn’t let you rest. She digs her muzzle under your neck and starts pushing you up until she gets your head off the ground. Then she works down your chest, until she’s forced you back to your feet.

You almost collapse back to the ground, but then you hear your father howl into the morning mist. He’s looking for you. The female wolf snarls at the direction of your father and starts trotting in a different direction, but stops to look for you to follow.

You turn your head upriver, in the direction of your father’s howl. You push yourself and start working through the snow. The storm has ended, leaving a thick dusting of snow over the ice that had formed from a thaw refreeze cycle, making the footing difficult. When you start heading for your father, the female trots in front of you, trying to block your way, but you stagger past her.

As you continue on to where you left your father, she walks up beside you. She whines in concern and licks the side of your face, but you continue on, one paw at a time. Your breathing is difficult and shallow, the bleeding filling your lungs. You manage somehow.

At last you reach the place where you left him. He’s gone. You check the scent and find that he left back along your own trail. Looking out over the river, you see him crossing over in search of you. He can’t move his hind leg. You huff, trying to inhale, but your injuries are too much. You can only manage a weak moan instead of the mighty howl it would take to get his attention. You try again and again, but don’t have the strength.

A high, piercing howl rides down the icy river bed, over the clash of human battle. Your father stops and snaps his head around. He lifts his nose up to the air as he looks at the two of you, then he starts running back to you as fast as he can. You step forward happily, but turn to see the female wolf trotting away. She gives you one last look and runs off.

You happily reunite with your father, but both of you are severely injured and starving.

Perhaps, but I'm assuming we're something of an adult wolf. Its around then that fathers begin getting hostile with them. Wolves after being ostracised from their pack usually wander for a while and are brought into another pack after befriending a female of the pack, and eventually after hanging around for a while the pack leader will either chase them away or accept them into the pack.
