Character Sheet : Incoming

You are a simple wolf. The woods are your home, the animals your prey. When the humans moved atop the great hill in your territory, they killed and ate all of your prey, leaving only their own corpses. You and your father are all that remains of your once great pack, and you have been surviving by eating the corpses of men.

A new pack of humans intruded on your territory and slew the humans that came before. They unleashed a great torrent of water and ice to slaughter for them. Victorious in their struggle for territory, they now rest upon the great hill, and more of these strange smelling humans arrive constantly, pouring in from the far side of the mountain.

But you are Whitefang the Terrible, the great wolf of the woods, eater of men and children. The wolf that cannot be slain by spears or arrows.

And for the last seven nights you have been feasting and regaining your strength. But something else has been eating the human corpses. You have yet to see it, because its presence is always preceded by its thunderous and lumbering steps. But you have seen its work. It rips out the belly of the rotting humans and consumes their organs before snapping their thighs to drink the marrow. Corpses have been tossed about as if they were twigs. It is dangerous.

The sun has just dropped below the western mountains, and night has laid down on the valley. The moon is half full and the snow is glistening. From the far side of the river you can see the glow of fires atop the great hill. For the first few hours of night humans will still be arriving from across the mountains, but soon the cold will force them to stop. That is when the creature arrives.

Typically.

You can feel the trembling through the snow. Hidden among the trees overlooking the clearing where the battle was fought, you and your father wait. Your stomachs are full, so you do not hunger for the fallen flesh, but you need to know what the beast is that is so close to your territory.

You see it emerge from the far trees, shortly following a small group of the strange smelling humans. It is draped in shadows, and as large as the monsters. Most of its bulk seems to be around the shoulders, and you can see the reflected light from its eyes.

The humans see it as well.

You glance at your father and hunker down into the snow more. The storm has passed, so the blowing cold is gone. You watch from on high as the humans quickly bunch together. A few of them are carrying fire above their heads, and swing it at the creature. The humans in the back quickly try to calm a small, strange horse, laden with bulk. Even from here you can smell the human food on the horse.

The humans with stone tipped branches move to the front as the others try to usher the horse along. In the flickering light of the fires, you see that four of the humans carry bows, and are readying them. They are ready for a fight, but clearly do not want one.

Then the creature responds. It pushes off the ground and rises up on its hind legs, towering above the humans. Humans are thrice your height, and this is twice theirs and stands like they do. From its bulking shoulders what appears to be the branches of trees spread out to either side, silhouetted against the bright snow. It swings its arms a bit and growls like a bear.

Four pointy sticks fly through the air, loosed by the bows. All of them imbed in the creatures chest.

It moans in pain and falls back to its four feet. It staggers, turns, and trots off, dripping blood. The humans are awestruck.

Running among the trees and out of sight of the humans you circle around to where it entered the woods. Your father follows behind, slowly. Glancing into the clearing you see that the humans are rushing across the river, tugging and pulling the horse behind them. A few of them see your eyes and shout, but don’t bother to grab their bows.

The path the creature took into the woods sways back and forth, with blood sprinkled down the middle. Its paws are no larger than a large bears, smaller than you would have thought. It has taken a winding switchback up the side of the mountain, likely to a cave. Chasing after it would be simple.

But your father growls, the fur on his back standing on end. He sniffs the blood again and starts backing away, snapping at you to do the same.

You can hear the howling of another wolf pack, over the hills and near.

Your father turns and runs back the way you came. You take another glance up the mountainside and hear the creature roar in pain, but you can tell it’s angry. You follow after your father.

The humans have already crossed the river and you doubt more will be arriving. Far downriver from the battle scene the ice arching over the low river is still intact. Cracks scatter down its surface beneath the snow, but it can still hold the weight of a mere wolf. The two of you cross back into your territory, only stopping to mark it as yours still. In the woods of your home you can smell the crisscrossing paths of the humans. Their clumsy weight drives them through the ice with every step and scatters their scent.

They’re patrolling around the great hill, and stand a good chance of finding you if you’re not careful.

The two of you pass by the snow covered horse carcass. Crows and other vermin have since picked it clean and left nothing of interest. The smell of human from atop the great hill has hardly changed, but it is now laced with that strange odor.

Unseen in the night, the two of you continue around the great hill, detouring and searching for any track of prey besides the humans. These humans seem even more efficient at stealing all of your prey. When you arrive at one of your old dens your father immediately begins digging through the snow to break through the drift. You join him and are soon met by the smell of your old pack, now perished.

Your den is in a small hill near the great hill, on the far side from the river. It overlooks the spring fed lake that makes the heart of your territory. Humans with fire are making constant trips between the great hill and a break in the ice.

The two of you crawl into your den and curl up next to each other for warmth. With full stomachs, the two of you find easy rest.

Health : 9
Hunger : 1/5

A storm picked up in the early morning, while the two of you slept. The drifts of snow once again sealed up your den, helping it stay warm. But the air seems thin. Groggily, you rise to your feet and push out through the snow. The entire world seems a white blur and you can hardly make anything out.

But then you see it.

Your mouth begins watering and your father sticks his head out of the den as well. He licks his jowls and picks his way out through the snow. Down at the water’s edge is a deer. A small thing, but exposed and trying to break through the thin ice to get a drink.

Your father sticks near the water’s edge and approaches the deer quickly, but it doesn’t see him. He makes sure to give you plenty of time to circle wide, hiding among the trees. Just when you start to get on the other side of it, you see the deer pop its head up and start swiveling its ears around. What was a relaxed posture to break through the ice is now fully on edge.

Your pack leader is experienced enough that he would never be seen if he didn’t want to be, and you are too far in the trees for a simple deer. Something is wrong. You start testing the air as you walk up a small crest.

Human.

You make eye contact with the human and snarl. In his hands is a bow, he’s the one that alerted the deer. “Whitefang,” he whispers as he stares at you.

Legends is a very seat of my pants narrative tool used to give dramatic powers to characters to make things more interesting and give the story an epic fantasy feel to it. We all know that a human could never cleave a horse in two, but a legend could. And legends are of course born of drama and events. So doing something important will spark a legend if there wasn't one before. The more intense the stories about you become before the legend is ignited, the more powerful the legend will be. But once you've ignited a legend, you must maintain it.

The powers of a legend are various perks, such as Catching Fur (The Terrible) | You cannot be slain by ranged attacks
or Impervious (Guardian of the Woods) | Cannot be harmed by human weapons

Unless a crit occurs, these perks override the results of the dice.
On the upside, crits can also improve your legend. You earned Catching Fur by critting your dodge against a double critted spear throw.

There are also anthem legends like "Nightmares are more powerful beneath the moon", "Heroes never lose." and so on

Legends only apply when interacting with people that know them though.

tl;dr, come up with something simple and memorable, and that's your power when people who believe it see it

You growl as he slowly drops the bow. When he reaches inside his furs you pounce. Snow erupts behind you as you leap into the air. You almost get through to him, but he twists, throwing his cloak into the air and wrapping it around you. You land in the snow and jump back as he rips free of the skin and faces you with a small stone in his hand. You growl and edge in, but he doesn’t back down. When he slashes at you with the stone you dodge back and evade unharmed.

The two of you begin to circle through the snow as you hear the deer. Your father has caught up to it with ease. It bleats out wildling as your pack leader tears out the back of its legs. It tries to scramble away but he simply keeps attacking, ripping the tendons apart till it half collapses to the ground. Even still, it tries to pull itself away.

The deer is small, but too large to drag back to your den with ease. If this human is going to fight, you won’t be able to get away with the deer.

You and the human dance with one another a bit more. Then you get your opportunity. He lunges forward and trips. A root hidden in the snow caught his foot. When he crashes into the snow, you leap atop him. Your weight pushes him further into the snow as he struggles to regain his footing. The blood lust rises in you and you bite into the back of his legs, ripping through the thin leather.

You bite into his flesh and tear off a sizeable chuck before jumping off of him. He screams in pain as you chew the meat and swallow it. He growls something angrily, “Monster.” You growl back, but turn and run down to the lake side as he struggles to get back to his knees.

Your father had his head buried in the chest cavity of the still living deer, but pulls his head out as you approach. He instantly smells the human blood on you and his mane rises up with a snarl.

When you look back, the human is kneeling with his bow, pulling back one of the pointy sticks. The two of you abandon the deer and run back in the direction of your den. Two of the sticks land near you, but both of the miss greatly. You take refuge in the hills and trees and turn back to check on the human.

You see him trudging down to the lakeside, limping heavily and holding his injury. He looks over the deer before slicing open its neck and quieting it. With as much strength as he can, he kicks the corpse of the deer, sending it over the ice. He rears his head back and roars, “Whitefang!” before dropping to one knee and holding his injury again.

A moment later he starts trudging back up to the great hill, leaving the carcass on the ice.

The two of you choose to circle wide around the lake and search for other prey. But no matter how much you search, you can’t find hidden vermin, the deer’s herd, or anything else. You were lucky to find the deer at the lake, you probably won’t be getting that lucky again. The humans have simply stripped your territory clean with their infestation.

As the sun begins to set, you return to the lake on your way to the den. The humans still haven’t claimed your kill as their own. Instead, crows are pecking at it on the ice. Your stomach hungers, but not nearly as bad as a week before. You aren’t on the brink of death, you’re almost healthy. You can go a day without food.

But you don’t have to.

The fires of the humans are isolated atop the great hill, there’s a chance they aren’t watching the carcass.

You shake your head and continue past it. Humans will be watching it like they watched the horse, or the ice won’t support your new size, something will go wrong. Your father follows behind you until you get back to the den. You hesitate, but he digs back in and quickly curls up to rest.

You can hear the howling of the other wolf pack.

You start to walk away from the den. Your father sticks his head out to look after you, but you continue on, returning to the river. The animals of the forest are gone, the humans drove them all away. Where once there were birds and squirrels and deer, even in the dead of winter, there is only the blowing of the wind. The river ice is hard and solid beneath you as you cross. The gap between the trees, between the territories seems larger than ever.

Just before you reach the other side you hear a familiar howl.

Your father is sitting next to a tree, howling after you. He sits just on the edge of the territory.

Ahead of you, you can hear a new pack howling at the night.

You sit down on the far side of the river as your father and raise up your head to the moon. You howl, long and filled with mourning. You look back to him, to see if he will budge, to see if he will forsake his home and join you.

But he stays. He howls back, but he stays.

You rise and continue back up the slope, leaving behind your home with a limp tail.

The female wolf you met a week prior travelled up the mountain side when she left. The river runs close to the cliffs on this side, so there must be more woods on the far side of the rocks. If there are no humans there, then surely there will be prey enough for you.

The ascent is not easy since you do not know the way. Rocks and cliffs block your way with nearly every turn, forcing you farther and farther upriver, until you are nearly back at the scene of the battle, but much higher on the mountain.

Then you smell them. A pack of humans carrying fire are nearby. This isn’t near where they were arriving from, they must be spreading. You bare your fangs.

But there’s another scent. The scent of the wounded creature you saw.

Following the scents, you rush upriver. The musk of the bear like creature is strong and easily tracked. The stench of blood is still strong on it. As far as you’ve already risen on the mountainside, tracking back down to its cave is easy, but the humans arrive at the same time as you.

You are sheltered in the shadows of the cliff, above the entrance to the cave. Six humans appear on the rocky clearing in front of the cave. The spread out, blocking the only way back to the woods. On the flanks are the fire carriers. Strapped to their backs are sticks and stones you know to be dangerous. The four in the center are heavily armed, they carry large stones at their hips, branches on their backs, and bows in their hands.

The humans begin to shout for the monster. “Come monster,” the beckon, and you hear the response.

The stone beneath your feet rumbles with each step it takes. The once confident humans stare with wide eyes as the creature emerges. From above it you can see that gnarled vines and branches cover its body, some spreading up from the shoulders like wings. If this was once a bear, it is no more.

It rears up on its hind legs to bellow at them, and you jump back lest the branches strike you even as high as you are.

The humans do not flee.

Something inside you trembles and whispers to you. This creature is Treebark, Guardian of the Woods, and he is losing his power. The arrows that struck true have wounded him grievously.

Perhaps buying the creature time to escape, or even slaying its pursuers, might allow a more cooperative dialogue between us.

Or maybe if we somehow manage to kill it the legends generated from such an event could skyrocket us to dire wolf proportions.

I love that people running away is a thing in this. Rarely see moral in a tabletop RPG, and I love the way legends work in this, reminds me of Grendel.

I am very glad people are having this kind of reaction. Like you have no idea

Treebark used to have the perk, Impervious (Guardian of the Woods) | Cannot be harmed by human weapons, but since he crit failed his escape, he got shot to hell by the arrows, and evidence was found that he can be harmed by human weapons. Until this discrepancy is resolved, he will not have this perk in the eyes of these humans.

And remember, legends are mutable

Oh look its the humie defense force
>>
You silently bare your fangs at the humans who challenge the woods. The woods are strong, and they will fight back. They will not disappear into the night with a whimper. You turn and dash down the cliff and return to the woods, circling round to come from behind.

You see Treebark stand there, not wanting to attack, but the humans growl and whoop and step forward. The two in the middle arm themselves with the long branches, putting themselves between Treebark and the bowmen. Treebark bellows again, spreading his arms wide and stepping forward, hoping that the humans will flee. The bowmen loose two more arrows into his chest.

Treebark stumbles back and the branch bearers roar and charge forward. They both stab their stones into his gut, spilling great amounts of blood. They start cheering as Treebark falls to his four feet. But then he roars. Great big claws extend from his paws and he rises up above them. He swings down with one paw and catches both of them. You hear their bones snap as they get knocked aside, their weapons shattered. Treebark roars as the bowmen prepare their sticks again.

Giving you the perfect opportunity to pounce on the fire carrier, knocking him to the ground and shredding his arm. “Whitefang! Whitefang!” they shout as you maul the man.

The bowmen drop their weapons and draw their long branches. The two men struck by Treebark are groaning and grabbing their stones.

we will soon have a team of pissed off hunters on our asses and this will hurt our legend greatly.
>>
>>29269825
We'll probably need to retreat, unless Treebark has like 1 hp point left.

I say we take over a pack. We can be the new Guardian of the Forest with his own army. I think this effort might be enough for a spark.

>>
>>29269874

Eh, we can run away easy enough. We have plenty of health.

It'll hurt Treebark (kill him) but I doubt it'll reflect terribly poorly on us.
>>
>>29269874
>and this will hurt our legend greatly.
Not necessarily. They're out to hunt a monster, and another monster shows up to harry them while they fight, showing how merciless the forest is. Besides, it might solidify our image as a bloodthirsty, terrifying beast.
>>
We should kill Treebark and humans dont like him anyway
>>
>>29269930
Well it should hurt our legend since the worse we did was hurt a guys arm.
>>29269929
2 guys are in pain, one is pinned under us and there is a second fire bearer with a weapon.
>>
>>29269990
I forgot the two spear men.
>>
>>29269985
He's probably already dead. If so, we don't have any real shot at taking out these four humans. They're much better armed than the ones we've fought before. If he's not dead by some miracle, we'll need his help to kill the rest.

If we kill all of the humans or enough to make them flee we can talk about killing Treebark but I lean against it.
>>
>>29270016
So two longsticks on the ground heavily wounded, a fire carrier under us, two bowmen armed with longsticks, and a fire carrier on the side of them I think.

>Hey guys! Let's attack the humans, what could possibly go wrong?
>>
You can hear Treebark roar and attack, but you focus on the small, squirming human beneath you. He is a pathetic specimen, barely able to fight against you and his throat is unprotected. He doesn’t even have his stone out by the time you’ve ripped out his trachea. He takes a few wheezing breaths, spurting blood across the ground and trying desperately to breathe.

You back off and jump away as the other fire carrier haphazardly swings the fire stick at you. Fear has taken hold of him, you can smell it.

Beyond the human you see Treebark raise again, five sticks in his chest and two of the pointy branches. The light of the torches must be playing tricks on you. He seems shorter, and less of his body is covered in the gnarled wood that had been protecting him. But he still possesses great strength, enough to continue the attack.

His claws come down on one of the bowmen before he can ready the branch. The human screams as his furs rip off, spilling his guts with them. Treebark attacks the other, but misses as one of the first humans roars and rushes up behind him stone in hand. The human claw rips into Treebarks hind, ripping through the tendons and dropping him to the ground.

As the guardian whines and falls, the other two humans close in and attack. He swats at them desperately, but cannot reach as they mercilessly rip him apart, dancing in and out to stab him over and over again. At last his great head falls and slams against the ground.

And the humans turn to face you, covered in blood.

You snarl and growl, the fur on your back standing up like a porcupine’s. The fire carrier stumbles back from you. “Noo, no no no no,” he mumbles as you stalk forward. The branch wielder swings his weapon around to face you, but you are unafraid. You dash forward and leap when he stabs, gliding over the stone tip. Your fangs clamp down around his throat and tear as you land on his chest. You jump off, ripping out the flesh as you knock him away.

You growl and watch the corpse tumble over the rocks and fall. The two humans start to edge around you. “Spears! Spears!” The fire carrier is running away, leaving only the two injured humans to face you. You flip the meat into the air and snatch it, gulping it down.

Treebark’s corpse is unrecognizable. What was once a formidable beast covered with nature’s blessing, is not merely an old bear. His muzzle is as white as the snow around him and his body crooked. From snout to tail he is perhaps the length of a human. The legend has passed from him.

Now the humans are on either side of you. They stand against you, but you can smell the sweat pouring from their bodies. You can see how they edge their feet, ready to flee, you know their injuries are great. Treebark did not disappear with a whimper.

You yelp in pain as fresh blood spills forth. You snarl and bite, but he dodges back, giving you room. His pack brother is reluctant to join him, but his resolve is stronger than a moment before. You begin to back up towards Treebark’s corpse as he follows after you. His footing is careful, his grip loose but firm, his eyes focused.

Then a human horn sounds in the distance. Both of them reflexively turn, giving you your opportunity.

>>
Are we the Wolf Whose Eye Was The Moon?
>>
You dance back and forth with the human, nipping at him as he slices through the air. At first you slip, but manage to leap back as he chops down at you. The human starts growling at you, barking and grunting as he chases after you. He stabs and slices and hacks, but his movements are simple and predictable. Everywhere he thinks to find you he finds naught but ice and air.

At last he grunts and lunges, trying desperately to kill you. But you jump to the side, twist, and pounce as he tries to intercept you. You pull open your maw far wider than you though possible, and your long fangs sink into his neck, ripping through his vital arteries. He falls to the ground with you atop him.

He reaches up to grab your neck, squeezing as tight as he can, but strength and control is gone. His hands fall down as you release his neck. Panting deep clouds of steam in the night air you look up at his comrade. He stands opposite you, fiercely holding a bow drawn back and aimed at you.

You bare your fangs at him.

>>

>>
>>29272875
You're building a vocabulary, which you will eventually be able to find creative uses for

>>29272881
You lost your chance at them when you got stabbed.

>>29272891
Legends of Monsters basically, as opposed to being a fae or a God

Treebark was a fae creature, that I was not planning on having die. The dice kind of murdered him, because he literally had : Impervious (Guardian of the Woods) | Cannot be harmed by human weapons, which got thrown out the window because he kept crit failing his defense

So this is interesting
>>
>>29272931

Hmm...so what was the 'force' that we kept on having added to ours when we killed humans last thread?

Are we acquiring captive souls?
>>
>>29272931
would he have been hostile if we'd saved him?
>>
>>29272965
the nature of the format means I had to tell you somehow that the actions you were taking were building a legend, and legends are power.

>>29272967
Is a bear hostile to a wolf?
>>
>>29272965
I assume we are empowered by the fear humans have for us.

Everytime someone tells the story of the big bad wolf, we grow a little stronger.
>>
>>29273026
To add to this, the tales humans believed of Treebark being invincible proved to be false (due to crit fails) so they ceased to believe in it, and thus he no longer had that ability, which is why he shrunk in size and lost his vines I assume.
>>
>>29273026
So we can change our name to Bigby?
>>
>>29272931
>You lost your chance at them when you got stabbed.

If we leave no survivors (other than the runner whom I think didn't see us get stabbed) do we still get the Treebark powers?
>>
I don't like this preoccupation with who exactly saw what and what exactly gives us our legend powers. This sort of meta is not fun.

Why do you think these legends are legendary? They don't happen often, they don't last long, and they get piled into a stronger legend more often than not

It's like they think two survivors tell a better story than one or something. That knowing what actually happened will spread the tale faster than wild speculation

That's why we need a pack. Next thread.

Agreed.

Though I do want to off the archer and devour the wounded. Because that is how we roll.

Plenty happy being the Terror of the Woods, and would prefer that to being the guardian just for flavor reasons.

Whenever I or a friend runs a setting for PnP I am injecting the tale of Whitefang, the Terror of the Woods into it. Doesn't get much more 'Big Badass Wolf' than this.

So, what is a fae? a neutral?
And how would we get god status? Save wolves?
>>

Fae are good ish, Gods are neutral, Nightmares are evil

They can be kind or malevolent, and can change the world around them. They could increase the fertility of the land in exchange for a festival tribute, and a drought cycle and their power grows with the number of worshippers they have. Becoming a god is a difficult process, but there might be short cuts. The Gods are gods though, they do not tell their secrets less they lose their power. They know they only have it because people believe them to have it.

But everyone knows that when the light fades, it is the nightmares that remain

Its a good thing gods can be feared eh?

The OP has a point.

I'd still be very disappointed if we didn't get all those perks though.
