Today was a repeat of yesterday. Tomorrow will be a repeat of today. As you make your way home from class, you try to stifle a yawn. You missed both the train and the bus today...

Despite the small upset in your life about a month ago, everything seems to have settled back down. Despite learning that you have been infected with the Renegade, a sort of virus that grants its hosts incredible powers, and being approached by a secret agency which wishes to cover up these events, you have managed to return to a feeling of normality and restart everyday life. Everything is almost exactly as it used to be.

"Oh my, Captain, you haven't been sleeping well have you?"
>>
>>29263491
Yes, everything is almost back to normal. Claire is still here.

You glance over your shoulder to look at the girl walking beside you. A small lock of her auburn hair has been braided and pulled back into a tail on the side of her head, clear proof that the other girls in the class have been fussing over her again. Claire, the observing agent from that shadowy organization, the UGN, has been hard at work. From precisely 6:30AM to 10:30PM, Claire is always within earshot. She claims to be watching you from afar during the other hours of the day, but you cannot prove this either way. Like you, Claire hosts the Renegade, marking her as a human being with special powers: an Overed.

"Captain, are your bestial urges interfering with your sleep patterns? I am afraid I cannot indulge your needs if they are, but I can forward your condition to the Chief. I understand that these problems are common for young men, even those without the Renegade inside them."

You can't believe she said that with a straight face. Normally, you'd like to just go home and sleep, but you have things you need to do today, whether you like it or not. Unused to having an agenda, you struggle to think about what you were supposed to do first...

>Make your monthly report to the UGN Chief. You are under supervision after all.
>Manaka Ayase, a classmate involved in *that* incident a month ago has given you a call. You don't think it would be wise to ignore her.
>Claire has told you that you must begin your compulsory education on your condition. She insisted on instructing you on your abilities.

Yeah, that is depressing as hell. I actually do like her, mostly because she's the perfect foil to Captains attitude. It's funny.
>>
>>29263513
Yeah, that's right. You need to get this monthly report out of the way before you get in trouble. Claire files her own papers, or so you're told, but you still need to make an appearance at headquarters once a month. You don't know many details beyond that, but you're confident that whatever it is can't take too much time.

After all, they must have better things to do with their time than hassle you, right?

You tell Claire that you're heading in for your monthly appointment and have her take the lead. You walk several blocks toward the downtown area, with Claire avoiding any methods of public transportation. You don't come down here much, the heavy traffic and crammed together skyscrapers make you feel a little claustrophobic. Eventually, you reach your destination. It's an old style building, with heavy gothic overtones, all seemingly carved from a single piece of black stone. Huge metal doors bar your entrance, and there's no visible handles or buttons to press to open them. Claire approaches the door and motions for you to follow.

"Just one moment. Let me make my key." Claire looks around her, obviously checking to see if anyone is paying particular attention to her. She opens up her bookbag and takes out a slip of regular notebook paper. She taps the paper with her finger, and the paper begins to contort and twist, folding in on itself over and over again until it takes on the shape of a card. From what you can tell, it isn't just the shape that has changed--the paper now has a plastic sheen to it, and that's clearly a magnetic strip running down the side of it.

Claire places her card up to a small white panel which flashes green and makes a small beep. The doors slide open and steps aside. Finished with her key, Claire drops it, and you see it dissolve into a black, metallic sand.

"After you, Captain."

>Remain silent
>Ask her about that "key"
>>
>>29264195

No questions just go report
>>
>>29264180

Weren't we told the Renegade can propagate through minerals? Is it really safe for her to leave behind metallic dust when she uses her powers? Seems like it's an infection waiting to happen.
>>
>>29264195
Are we going to have to get one of those for days when you're not around? You know, the days it snows in Hell?

80% of people are already infected. It just doesn't do anything in most people.
>>
>>29264333

Let's not discuss that here.
>>
>>29264383
I still think it's irresponsible. Not to mention rude. Clean up after yourself, Clair! You don't see us leaving our flesh lying around everywhere after we use our Chimera powers. Which we haven't really used, actually, but that's beside the point.

Shit, just like the blade from Ayase's stalker.
Yeah, definitely going in the report.
>>
>>29264641

But yeah, her getting chopped up by a crazy dude is probably less mundane than us having to confront a crazy dude.
>>
>>29264736
We don't work for them, they *can't* have us look into that.

We'd almost certainly end up getting involved, though.
>>
>>29264195
You decide it would be best not to ask her about this key. As you enter the building, you do mention that you think you might need your own eventually.

"There is no need," Claire says, the doors slamming shut behind her. She looks up at you with her usual dead expression, "I will always be here to let you in."

Right. Don't think too hard on that. You turn your attention to the rest of the building. The style is just as ornate and archaic as the exterior. Pillars, exquisite carvings, and golden accents make the place feel like a castle, and the impossibly huge paintings and red carpets only add to the building's regal nature. While you see people in what you would consider normal clothing walking up and down the hallways, the majority of people you are aware of are dressed like what you can only guess are butlers.

"The Chief's tastes are something else, aren't they?"

You feel a hand grab your shoulder and you practically jump out of your skin. You spin around to see a woman grinning. While you would consider her to be wearing normal, perhaps even stylish clothing, what your eyes are drawn to is the white lab coat. She must work here or something.

"Oh my, oh my. Jumpy are we?" The woman covers her mouth and giggles.

You turn to Claire, but Claire is looking the other way...hey! Is she ignoring you?!

"You must be Wild Card. I heard you were coming today," the woman gives you a thumbs-up and flashes a toothy smile, "I'm Shining Void. I'll be the one doing your monthly examination. Pleased to meet you!"

>What? You thought you were supposed to see the Chief

"Oh, really? You don't like it? But you know..." Void puts a finger on her chin, "You were given your code name by special request."

What's this? Why would anybody go out of their way to give you such a silly name. You are already suffering enough by being called the Captain of the Go-Home club. As you ponder this situation, you let your eyes roam over to Claire, who is still looking away from you. Actually, she seems to be purposefully avoiding your gaze.

"What's wrong, little Bullets," Void begins, "You were so proud of it before!"

Bullets? What? Wait, didn't you hear something much more important just now...? You lean in and give Claire the stink eye. Eventually, she stops avoiding you and returns to her normal expression.

"The 'Wild' is because you are a Chimera, and have bestial powers. I thought it sounded cool, so..."

Apparently, Claire is finished, because she lets that sentence hang there without any further explanation. After a few moments, Shining Void claps her hands and gets your attention back.

"Well, well, what's done is done. No changing it now!"

Well, you suppose your question has been answered.

Putting all that aside, this is the first you've heard about any sort of examination. You thought you were here to submit a report. You expected paperwork, lots of rubber stamps, and maybe an interview or two. Not to get ambushed by some odd lady in a lab coat.

"Welllll, most of the reporting is being done by Speeding Bullets over here," she points to Claire. That must be her codename. Sounds just as childish as the rest of them, you can only assume that she got to pick hers too.

"What you're mostly here for is my evaluation, you see. I'm here to make sure you aren't degenerating into a rampaging, wild Gjaum. So we're going to do a few tests, seeing how well the virus is settling in, take blood and marrow samples, check your regeneration rate, do a psychological evaluation, take your measurements, figure out exactly how much it has encroached upon your sanity. Little, simple tests like that."

Void clasps her hands together and gives you a beaming smile. Ugh, is everyone here unhinged? You would think that the Chief is sane, but the decorations on this building suggest otherwise. Shining Void approaches you and takes you by the arm. While she is still smiling, you feel something sinister behind her gaze. You wonder how much this is going to hurt...

"Oh, it'll be just fine. Just fine! My body is a natural pharmacy," She leans in mere centimeters away from your face, "It won't hurt one bit. Unless I want it to."

With that, you find the strength in your legs fading, and Void begins to drag you away. You look up to see Claire waving to you.

"Bye-bye."

You're not quite sure what happened after that. You have hazy recollections of being sliced into, asked incredibly intimate questions, and doing what you think is a zumba routine, but beyond those generalities, the entire experience is a blur. When you finally become aware of your surroundings again, you're sitting in a large, round office. Your first thought is that everything is far too bright. Blinding white light reflects off the white marble walls and floor. Every single fixture in this room is painted a stunning, pure white. The one source of color in the room is the large black desk in front of you, and the blood red tie of the Chief sitting behind it.

"Good afternoon, Wild Card. I see you're finally back with us."

The Chief is once again looking through what you can only guess is your folder. She reclines in her large, plush chair and crosses her legs. Her black stockings contrast against the shining room, and draw your attention to her legs. Oddly small. You had the impression she was taller, but maybe that's just her charisma...

"So, I'm here to do the interview portion of your report. Your vitals are within the norms, and Shining Void did not report any issues with your mental state--at least as far as the Renegade is concerned."

The Chief sets the folders down and looks at you. Once more, her shocking green eyes burrow themselves into your brain.

"Harold Yeager? Yes, I know about him." She reaches underneath her desk and pulls out another file.

"Harold Yeager: Born 199X to Tom and Barbara Yeager. No noteworthy accomplishments academically or socially. Awakened as an Overed at a young age and was subsequently discovered. Completed his surveillance several years ago with no incidents and is no longer considered an Illegal Overed. He was granted permission from his former Branch Chief to transfer to my jurisdiction. Of course, I accepted."

She closes the file and looks at you.

"I don't believe you are deceiving me, but I do not consider this a cause for concern. Even Overeds have their teenage troubles."

You sigh and lean back in your chair. Well, that doesn't make you feel any better about it. You see the Chief frowning, looking over her paperwork.

"Still, Speeding Bullets reports that he has a significant interest in Miss Ayase, your classmate from the accident. If he threatened you, it is cause for us to have a discussion with him."

The Chief then stamps your files and shoves them in a drawer.

"That concludes our meeting. Thank you for reporting in, and I hope our future 95 visits all go this smoothly."

Before you know it, you are shoved out of the building and onto the street with very little ceremony. You swear the butlers seemed a little disgusted that they had to touch you. Claire is waiting outside, carrying your bag for you.

"Welcome back, Captain. I have your things ready for you." She holds out your bag and waits.

"Excellent. I have been waiting for this with the utmost anticipation, Captain." Claire gives you your bag and leads you away from the building. You're not happy with all the walking you've been doing today when the public transportation system is there for everyone to use, but Claire seems to insist on taking the long way around for all of this. She begins to lead you down a series of progressively shady back-alleys, with each gaining a new layer of grime, a stronger scent of alcohol and garbage, and roughly double the amount of homeless strung out addicts as there were before.

Eventually, Claire stops along one alley, pacing around with arms crossed for a few minutes before finally seeming satisfied with her selection. She sets her bag down and walks a few feet away from you, standing at the intersection of this alley and another.

"Let us begin," She gives an obviously faked cough to clear her throat and starts to speak, "As you know, the Renegade virus acts to protect its host in times of great danger. This is why many Overed awaken during incredible crises, like your bus accident last month. This is beyond the control of any organization. None have created a reliable method of creating Overed. However, once the virus is active within its host, it begins to move according to the desires of that host. Understanding how to convey your desires to the Renegade within you is the basis of controlling your powers."

Well, that's fascinating and all, but you were never much one for inner calm and discipline. All this sounds like something far beyond your level.

"Yes, I thought as much as well. Often times, it takes an external stimulus before a recently awakened Overed learns how to urge their powers. In order to advance your power and understanding, I shall provide stimulation."
>>
>>29267949
Claire reaches down into her bag and pulls out an notebook. Once more, you see the paper twist in her hand, taking on a more and more complex form until finally...Hey! That's a gun!

"Yes, and this is the inspiration for my codename. None among the Morpheus Syndrome can create such a large caliber pistol as quickly and accurately as I," she points the pistol at you. Wait...wait! Hold on!

Before you can object, someone rushes past you and grabs Claire, yanking the pistol from her hand and pointing it at her head.

"Hush, girl! You got money! You and that kid over there! I can hear it, hear it in your pockets!"

"Nooo. Help me, Captain. Pleaase," Claire's face remains utterly expressionless. Her acting is completely awful. It's clear she's not actually afraid of this man...but he is pointing a gun at her head.

"Shut up! You're gonna give me everything you got! Clothes too, those sell good! Yeah..."

"Save me, Captain. You're my only hope."

...So unconvincing. Still, maybe you should do something?

You're not really feeling it but...you guess you should put at least a token effort in. You're actually kind of embarrassed to be taking part in an escapade like this, but you're not sure how real that gun is. You call out to the man and step forward putting your hands up.

"Don't you come any closer! I'll kill both of ya!"

"Don't worry about me, Captain," More bad acting, "Those halcyon days we spent together were more than a girl like myself could ask for."

Wait, what? Exactly what kind of roleplay is going on here? How much backstory are you unaware of? Did you change genres? Is this rehearsed? Utterly mortified by this entire situation, you reflexively step forward to shut her up and end up flying forward faster than you can believe. Shocked and a little afraid, you extend one hand to slow yourself down, and feel an itchiness spread across your flesh.

A hard, black shell suddenly bursts forth from underneath your skin, growing over your limbs. Your sinew thickens, and your fingers elongate into sharp claws. In that brief moment where you are utterly in awe of yourself, you forget that you are speeding forward with a deadly weapon, and allow your claw to smash straight through the assailant's head. Well, smash is the wrong word. There's utterly no resistance. You fly straight through him, colliding into Claire and tumbling to the ground.

Holy crap, did you just kill someone!? Immediately, you look over to check on the homeless man, but he's already gone. What...? But how...?

You hear Claire click her tongue.

"How disappointing. No fur."

You look back to her, lying on the ground underneath you, still holding the pistol as if it was never taken from her.

No fur...?

"It's nothing. My instructor was a Chimera and she had the most luxurious fur so...It's nothing. You're just fine as you are. Rather, that was a splendid display. The power of a man's romance is not to be underestimated."

Still confused, you try to put that little comment of hers out of mind and get up off of Claire. You look at your hands, or what used to be your hands. They still have five fingers, and they're still in the same basic shape but...this black chitin extends from the tips of your fingers all the way back to your elbow. The shell is incredibly hard, but you haven't lost a bit of flexibility. Of course, it would be difficult holding anything like this...

"This is just a small fraction of your power as a Chimera, the Therianthrope transformation. Each is unique to the user, and it appears yours is a terrible black beast. With practice, you can transform your entire body into a living weapon, a divine beast of destruction. Men shall tremble at your footfalls, women shall grovel for mercy, your foes shall--"

Yes, yes that's very nice. You ask her if there's anything worthwhile in that speech of hers. She immediately stops, the hints of enthusiasm in her voice draining away.

"Other powers, such as your healing factor and your enhanced senses, will come to you unbidden."

That's it? You thought there would be more to it.

"Well, I'm not a chimera so..."

Right, right...You don't know what you expected.

You decide to ask her about that man who attacked her. What was he?

"An illusion, provided by my Angel Halo Syndrome. Mastery over light and darkness. I cannot produce sounds, so I had one of the staff prepare this recording before hand." She pulls the trigger on her pistol, and you hear her assailant's speech begin again.

"A good trick, is it not? I am quite proud of it."

I would like to add that her whole spiel about the power shows that she's been indoctrinated to believe Overed to be superior.
>>
>>29269464
I think it might just be that she imprinted on her teacher somewhat. The "aw, no fur?" comment, and all. She hasn't said things like that about her own abilities, so I think she is just REALLY into the Chimera syndrome
>>
>>29269596

>>
>>29269596
Your right, that might just be why she seems so weird about us. We need to ask about this teacher sometime.
>>
>>29269134
You reach forward, letting your gnarled claw return to a normal human hand, then flick Claire's forehead, causing her to give a small yelp. You tell her she seriously needs to work on her acting if she's ever going to awaken some 'man's romance' within you. Claire rubs her forehead while collecting her things.

"I understand. I will need to provide a much higher level of stimulation to satisfy you. I would expect no less from the Wild Card."

That's not exactly what you meant, but you decide to leave it at that for today.

>>29269348
You do have one last question...These black claws. You're not sure how much you like being a chitinous black monster. You begin to wonder if there's any way you can affect some change on your shape, to perhaps something a bit less sickening.

"Ah, so you understand the need to contrast the wild, commanding power of the Chimera with soft, warm fur, yes? I understand. I am of the same persuasion. I shall contact my instructor, Lunatic High. She will be more than willing to assist you in discovering the more...fluffy aspects of your Chimera form, and more powers besides."

No, wait, you didn't mean that you wanted to be--

"Don't worry. I will make sure that she understands. I look forward to your blossoming."

You place a hand to your head, nursing a headache you didn't know you had. What kind of childhood did this girl have? You swallow the mountain of questions and doubts and adjust your shirt. That last transformation seems to have shredded the lower half of your sleeves...you might have to change your wardrobe if this keeps up.

You sigh and follow Claire out of the alley. You still have to meet Ayase today. God only knows what she wants.

TO BE CONTINUED.
>>
>>29269780

>>29269840
There's a lot of things we can't grow with our powers around her. For example, no wings unless they're horrible chitinous insect wings. Maybe not even that, we don't want her thinking we're ashamed of our wings. We don't need her trying to wingfic us.
