The night is yet young, but already flush with blood. You are the lone wolf Whitefang, Terror of the Woods. You came upon this pack of humans after abandoning your prey starved territory. They sought to challenge, and succeeded in killing Treebark, Guardian of the Woods. His once mighty and impervious body, wrapped in the blessings of nature, lies behind you as nothing more than a withered bear.

Now you are the beast in the woods. First, you ambushed their fire carrier. You pounced the whelp and shredded through his furs to spill his blood. The spearman was the next to fall to your fangs. You leapt over his attack and knocked him over the cliff's edge. The one with the human claw, twitching beneath your feet, was the third to challenge you, only to find that his weapon could not find you. Now only two remain; the other fire carrier who is fleeing through the woods, and the one who stands before you.

You growl and snap your teeth at him, but he doesn’t flinch. The fire the humans brought with them guttered out in the snow a moment ago, leaving only moonlight. He is heavily injured from Treebark's attack, but it doesnt' seem to be impeding him.

For those of you new to Wolf Quest, the mechanics are highest of first three d20s after the post asking for them, even if they aren't linked here. If it is a Fight check, you add your Fight modifier (+6), if it is a Flight check, you add Flight (+5)

This roll is the DC to beat

If you run out of health, you die

The night is still and stormless, but the pines still rustle against the snow. You can smell a hundred scents in the air, the springhead, fresh sap, burnt tar, the excrement of death, human blood, human sweat and fear, you can smell the entire night. Right down to when he will loose the stick.

You dash forward as he releases the bow, breaking his concentration. His aim pulls high and the stick goes well above you. He throws his arms across his body as you lunge. In his hand is one of the small stones the humans fight with when all else is lost. Your forefangs are larger than before, and nearly get in the way of you biting onto his arms, but your mouth opens just wide enough. You clamp down before he can stab you, piercing through and cracking the bone.

You snort and readjust your teeth, your breath washing against his face. You can finally see his eyes clearly. His body may be afraid, but he has accepted death.

The human growls, trying to push you up with his injured arm. You break away from him, letting his arm fly up in the air. He tries to stab forward with the stone, but the surprise gives you the opportunity. Your maw clamps down on this throat, ready to rip and tear. You can feel the saliva building up in your mouth as you bite, but something hard encircles his throat, far stronger than a mere bone.

You can feel the movement of air against your fur as he tries to stab again, giving you just enough time to release and leap away. Your teeth hurt and a sappy texture fills the space between them and your jowls, rather than the warm blood that should. The human staggers to his feet, loosely holding the stone in your direction. The human is laughing and scratching at his throat. You can see two gashes where your teeth ripped through and the blood they spill, but you didn’t taste any of it.

You snarl as he reaches within his furs to pull out a loop of leather studded with fangs. “Monster Charm,” he says as he widens his stance and bounces on the balls of his feet. “Come.” The human smiles, his mouth filled with fangs.

Just stop this fuckin thought process. You dont have to get everyone the brik of death then leave them to spread your word. A massacre will spread the word just fine too. Also humans are not the only way to get legends.

This human is strange. He is not like the others, something protected him. The whispering in your soul pulls you towards the charm around his neck. This power is not his own, it is a borrowed thing and he knows not how to use it. In just that small exchange, he lost his fear and found new confidence, even the pain from his injuries seem to be gone.

The arm you bit hangs limp at his side, but it was his off arm and does you little good. He laughs and makes half lunges at you, forcing you to dance back and forth. The exertion of battle is beginning to wear on you. Hunting is a slow process of running followed by only moments of attacking, and you always had help. This has been long and arduous by yourself, without your pack.

He should be bleeding out, be in shock from fear, numb from pain. His borrowed power has given him too much confidence. He is still just a human. The charm did not protect his arm, it didn’t protect him from Treebark’s attack, it won’t protect him from everything, even if it has let him force you up against the edge of the cliff.

That's not right though.
We get more stronger through legends. We can build legends without taking massive risks and fighting stuff stronger than us. This isn't you typical level gaining mechanic.

We could grow our legend by attacking 1-2 men at once, terrorizing a village without attacking anyone, killing livestock, etc. After we get strong and powerful enough, we could attack small groups of weaker humans and keep the legends growing.

There are many different ways of getting legends besides attacking straight on.

Killing livestock is a pretty shitty way to become a legend. Also less likely to get us killed, but unless we drain the blood from the corpses or something the most we would ever get is 'That Wolf That Keeps Eating Our Chickens'

The human licks his lips and smiles as he waves you over. “Come monster, come,” he says as he widens his stance as an invitation. He thinks he’s better than you. You snarl and accept. You dash forward and leap into the air. He pulls back and stabs at you, sinking his stone into your side and dislocating two of your ribs. The lance of pain in your lung brings back memories of the arrow that nearly killed you.

But it was a pain you knew you’d take. Your leap carries through and lands you atop him, knocking him to the ground. He grunts in pain as he tries to stop you with his injured arm. The stone in your side gets twisted and rips deeper into you, but he loses his grip on it. You bite down at his neck, but don’t go for the kill. Instead, you grab the leather cord and rip it off of him, shaking it in your mouth before tossing it aside.

The human shouts out as the charm tumbles over the side of the cliff. Saliva drips off your fangs. He’s distracted, and fear ridden. He is prey.

I don't agree. Depends on livestock. If they have cows, you bet there would some terrified legends about a beast that can drag away and eat an entire cow (should we manage).
Even if not, we still could make a legend of being fast, unseen, smart, sneaky, etc. Not every legend has to be about power.

>Attacking trained soldiers might be too far in the other direction, but up until that last unlucky roll it was badass as fuck and highly rewarding, was it not?
Did you take part in the first Wolf Quest? I seem to remember that we did well untill we suddenly got our shit wrecked. Of course, swimming against the current didn't help either.

New pain flourishes inside you as blood starts to fill your fur, but it would have been worse to leave in.

You get back to your feet and walk over to the cliffs edge. The moon is just visible over the edge of the mountains. The moon’s smile is great tonight, and looks down on your work. A great creature, Treebark, the Guardian of the Woods, fell tonight, at the hands of the humans. They proved him to be nothing more than an old bear, too weakened to protect himself from their weapons and numbers. He fought alone, and would have died alone if you had not arrived. You howl into the night.

Your father howls back first, but then you hear the other wolf pack howl. You will have comrades in these woods, but first you must recover. You can see the fires of humans climbing down from the great hill and swarming. They will be here soon.

A ravening hunger has taken hold in your body. Unsated you will never recover. These humans were your prey, and now you will feast.

You start with the charm human. He was physically weak and put up a far greater struggle than he should have. You tear open his gut and eat through his diaphragm to rip out his heart. It tastes just like any other. His liver on the other hand is fatty and sickened with lumps and foul flavors to it. Then you move to the human who wounded you with the large stone. He was the biggest and strongest of the humans, his meat would be the finest but you focus on his delicate organs.

Crows begin to arrive and you can see nocturnal vultures circling the moon overhead. You move to the fire carrier and devour his organs before the scavengers can steal from you. The last human you go to is the one Treebark killed. Eating the guardian’s kill leaves a bad taste in your mouth, but only in your head.

Health : 3

Just as you move to Treebark’s corpse, you smell the humans. The fire carrier that ran must be leading them back. The bear’s hide and fur are thick and resistant. You won’t have time.

Just want to say that I'm taking suggestions on how to deal with the vagueness of a wolf not instantly knowing names and such. Should I start referring to humans by their smell? Because that would be a bit of a stretch when they're all sleeping in shit and mud with the horses day in and day out

If they smell like something other than shit and mud and horses, sure. Otherwise I don't think we should understand names. All torch carriers are named Bert, Ernies are human alpha males, etc.
>>
With your stomach full enough, you trot back into the woods. The ice you used to be able to walk across seems weaker than before. Almost every step sends you breaking through until you’re forced to jump with every step to make progress. Slow as it may be, you escape from the cliff’s edge. You leave behind the carnage of the battle and let the woods wrap around and shield you from their eyes.

You resume your ascent of the mountains, searching for the true territory of the other pack. The climb is hard, but you find the scent of the female wolf at last. The snow had tried to bury it, but the winds brought it back to the surface. You stuff your nose to the ground, tracking back and forth as you climb. Her scent is joined by another, then a third, two of her sisters. You reach the top of the winding path, the ridge between two mountain tops, and look down on the other side.

It looks much the same as your territory, but there is no great hill. The snow covered forest is sparse, but spreads wide in the valley between mountains. A web of small streams join together as they pour down from the springs, frozen over from the winter. The howling of the pack is nearby.

You return their howl, calling out for them, and descend into their territory. The scent of the three sisters is soon joined by two others, unrelated males. The smell gets stronger and stronger, dotted by their musks. And then you find them

The five wolf pack is gathered in a small clearing between a copse of pines. The female wolf is there, along with her two sisters. One of them has a vibrant white cross over her chest, the other is a dull grey. Of the two males, one is clearly the alpha. He is larger and stronger than the grey wolf, and his coat is an unnatural dark black.

The female wolf recognizes you at once, but the alpha growls, backed up by the two grey wolves.

You snap back at the alpha. He is a large wolf, scars dot his body from tooth and stone. He did not become this pack’s alpha by chance. A name comes to your mind, Schatten. Then you notice the smell. Each of them smells of deer. They ate recently, there is still food here.

You walk down the slope between the trees to join them in the clearing. The female wolf is the first to approach you. You greet, bringing up memories of each other’s smell from when the two of you met over a week ago. Then she finds the wounds in your shoulder and side. She whines and starts licking them. Taking the cue of familiarity between the two of you, her two sisters come over to smell you. The male in the pack retreats to the den, a spacious recess in the clay hill.

You quickly learn the scents of the two sisters while Schatten paces around you. He can smell the human blood on you and recognizes it. While you chose to fight them, he must have chosen to run from them. He growls at you again and the two sisters back away from you. But the female wolf growls back at him. It’s short, but tells you enough of their relation.

You bare your fangs at him as he walks past to enter the den with the two sisters, but he doesn’t see. The four of them lay down on one side of the den, and Schatten stares at you.

As the pack settles in for the night, you follow behind. The cold outside is quickly cut by the warmth of the den. The heat of a pack like a small fire compared to the lonesome nights spent on the edge of the river. Dreariness swells inside of you as finally start to relax. Perhaps it is merely the loss of blood though.

You start sniffing around the pack, finding a suitable place to curl up. Then Schatten jumps up and snaps at you. As he growls the other three wolves perk up and snarl, swinging their heads from side to side, uncertain where the threat is. When they start to settle back down, you bare your fangs at Schatten. But never the less, you turn and walk over to the other side of the den and lay down in a small depression. The female wolf curls up with the pack, but at the farthest side from Schatten.

The black wolf watches you as you fall asleep, but you lack the energy to stay awake.

Several uneasy days pass with the pack. You clean yourself in a frigid pond, shedding the dried blood from your body. Removing the overbearing scent of human from you does wonders for the peace of the pack, but Schatten never accepts you. For five days you travel at the back of the pack, always sleeping on the far side of the den. Game is scarce, but not so much that you are starving. You are given the leftovers of a large deer the pack took down, but that was on the first day. The four days after, you went hungry.

When you awaken, the female wolf is curled beside you, and Schatten is nowhere to be seen. You’ve travelled far into their territory and been allowed to stay with them by the blessing of the female, but your stomach hungers.

You rise from the small den you had been sleeping in. The female wolf notices you leaving, but stays resting. Outside, the two sisters are running circles around the area, searching for scents. The grey wolf is sitting against a tree, watching you. Schatten is gone, but you could likely find him by scent.

Your stomach growls. You leave the clearing in a random direction and start searching. All through the hills and the trees you can find the traces of prey, but all of them are too small or too stale. You criss cross your path back and forth, getting farther and farther away from the den until you catch a scent. Two scents actually.

This area of the valley is much lower than where the dens have been, and holds the scent of a herd of goats. A great many of them are somewhere nearby. But just under your feet you can smell a hare. Before you can make a decision on which to hunt down, you see the white blur of the hare bolt out from hiding and you give chase.

It knows the area better than you, but you’re faster. You burst out from the trees behind it and crash through a frozen stream before overrunning it and snatching it up in your jaws. A quick flick of your neck wrings its back and ends its life. The hare is fat, but not much food. A meager meal at best, if it were split.

Then you notice the smell of human. You swing your head around in search, but find none nearby. The snow is covered in the odd lumps that humans leave as tracks, so one must come here frequently. But the only thing here is an odd stone.

The stone makes you uncomfortable.

You examine the stone for a moment. Snow has covered it almost completely, obscuring its shape. Then you realize that the two lumps of snow on either side are likely two other stones erected next to it in an arc around where the human stops. The wind blows and a burst of snow falls from the center of the middle stone, revealing a small hole through it. You run back the way you came.

When you arrive back at where the den is, you drop the hare a ways back and continue on as if you’d found nothing. Just as you get the female wolf’s attention though, you hear Schatten bark. The other three wolves jump up and run in his direction, but the female wolf trots over to you. Making use of the opportunity, you turn and lead her back to the hare.

At first she is reluctant to take the prey you brought back, glancing in the direction of Schatten. But when you nudge it towards her, she changes her mind. The two of you quickly devour the hare, leaving only the bones. You can hear the rest of the pack back at the den, fighting over something.

Returning over the small hills with hare on your breath, you see that Schatten has killed a goat and dragged it back on his own. The sisters are reluctant to touch it however. When you approach, the black wolf turns to you and snarls, smelling the hare on your breath, but quickly drops it.

For some reason, he doesn’t start eating the goat, instead he walks back to the den and lays down to watch as the others fight over the choicest portions.

You walk up to the goat as the grey wolf starts ripping through its shaggy hair. Schatten is watching you, but seems fine with you having some of his kill. When you’re close enough to sniff it, the grey wolf snaps at you and growls, spreading his stance over the goat to block you from it. You rise up a bit and snarl, your size dwarfing him and your voice far more intimidating. The grey wolf’s ears snap back for a moment as his tail drops.

But then he looks to Schatten and they perk back up, but he doesn’t challenge your ability to eat. There’s something off about the goat, but you can’t place it. The two sisters push past you to get to the meat. You notice that the female wolf ignores the goat entirely, choosing to sit against the trunk of an oak.

The three other wolves have devoured the best parts of the goat by now, spreading its gore across the snow. Then you finally notice it. Why it smells wrong, and why the sisters were reluctant to begin eating.

The meat is probably fine, just creepy.

But fuck that shit I aint eating no dry goat steak;

Did Schatten eat any of the meat from the deer the pack took down four days ago?
>>
>>29309817
yes
>>
You snarl, your mane rising up, and back away. Schatten watches you silently and you watch him. A moment later the three other wolves have stripped the goat. You see the grey wolf crack open one of the goat’s knees to clean out the marrow, but even that is missing.

You haven’t seen skeletons at the other dens, so he must not bring one back often. Normal prey must be scarce in this territory as well. Back when you were a young pup your pack was much larger, before the schism between your father and uncle, and your territory extended all the way to a strange human den. With the human were dozens of great lumbering cows, the size of which you’ve never seen since. But the pack never attacked such docile prey, because the humans guarded it.

This goat must have been similarly protected if Schatten had only now taken one of their herd for the pack. This could mean trouble soon.

You leave the clearing intent on finding your own food. Whatever happened to that goat, you want nothing to do with it. You head up the mountain slopes instead of down this time, to the edge of the trees. The air is thin up here, and the snow never melts. Beyond the tree line though, a thick and hardy seed grass still lives. If the entire pack had followed you it would have been impossible to not scare off all of the prey, but alone you find some.

A small herd of deer is grazing just beyond the trees. Two young deer and their father. Both of the fawns will easily escape you without a pack to support, but the buck is old and weak. When you reveal yourself, leaping through the snow, he only makes it a few feet before you tear him down.

You shred his back legs and pounce on his throat. The buck bleats and kicks, thrashing its antlers back and forth, but you’ve already severed most of its muscles. When silence returns to the mountains a gust of wind carries a peculiar noise to you. You run over the edge of a snow drift to look down on the valley below, through the bare trees. Three dogs are barking, weak wolf like creatures that have lost their wills.

The three of them are running through the snow, dashing back and forth, searching for scent. And at the back is a human. He is covered in furs with all manner of human weapons strapped to him. He bends over to examine the tree you urinated on the day prior. His dogs are running ahead, in the direction of the den, but he has stopped. You see him listen to the wind before following after the dogs.

You have encountered Hasdrubal, the Tracker.

And that's it for tonight, I'll be running again tomorrow since I'll be snowed in and hibernating.

Hope you enjoyed

So, should I end on cliffhangers like this thread, or end on accomplishments, like thread one?
