Let's see... news.

Nope. nothing. Sorry.

that pastebin also kiiiinda works as a clif notes version, but it's a bit in need of update. Just ask if you're trying to get in and are kinda lost, if one of the guys doesn't help out, I will.

So far, you think idly, this has been the best quarters you've had yet.

You're not exactly sure how it all works, to be honest. From what Ice has told you- and it's been verified by both Rosalie and Katya- the place is a traditional holding, such that men aren't typically given admittance to the castle proper. The rule was lifted almost entirely during the war, you know, though it's been enforced since then- the only permanent male populace of the place are the striker techs, and even they're housed in a separate building.

But you're not. In fact, they made it a point to make sure you were quartered with the rest of the squadron- despite, you've heard, some grumbling about it being improper. The grumbling got even louder when Merlin had a second bed and her things moved into your room- which, to be fair, you all expected. Ice didn't protest- she knew it'd be wasted effort- but you can tell she doesn't approve, either- there's plenty of space in the castle, afterall, and it's not like anyone else is sharing rooms with anyone. Hell, even Joe has his own room- even if he's rarely in it.

>>
That said, your first day on the grounds, so far, has been pretty lackluster. Mostly, it's been either rules and safety briefings, or you trying to get hold of air traffic procedures for the base. Being a witch hold, the airspace is traditionally restricted up to angels twenty, and there's no tower- witches don't need one. You're really not sure how the whole thing is supposed to work, and you've got a sneaking suspicion that no one else does, either. The next nearest airbase of any size is RAF Wattisham, up to the north, and they're far too far away to try and tackle air traffic for the castle.

You've run into a few matrons- well, more, they've made it a point to come and be introduced, though they all seem to be focusing on Merlin, which has resulted, probably predictably, in her sticking close to you. You've met representative matrons from all over, though you've done little more than exchange greetings with them.

They've notified you of the most irritating rule- you're not really allowed to wander around without a witch. You're allowed around your squadron area, of course, and the common rooms and outside- you're not under house arrest or anything. It was explained to you as simply being a matter of tradition- that and there are parts of the castle that have been unused for a long time- not to mention the possibility of running into someone in a state of undress. The second one actually makes you laugh- as if you're not already used to seeing bareleg witches all the time anyway.

You've got plenty of time to go poke around- and you're sure Merlin will want to come with, so you feel pretty free to wander. Alternately, of course, you could go see about talking to one of the girls and see what they're up to.

[x] Guess we should go see if the boss has anything else for us.

You clamp down on your urge to explore- between the dungeons downstairs and the Library, you'd imagine there's plenty of places to kill time. Still, you're an officer in the US Navy, and that entails certain obligations- like going to see if your commanding officer has anything she needs you to do.

Or, more likely, you think, things she doesn't want you doing. Or needs to tell you not to do.

“C'mon, Merlin.” You say, causing your RIO's head to pop up out of the comic book she was engrossed in. “Let's go see if the boss has anything else for us.”

She nods, rolling up the comic- you're sure some collector, somewhere, is crying at that- and hopping off her bed, getting into her shoes. She steps out the door in front of you, looking back as you close it and start down the hall way.

The squadron hall is one of the renovated dormitory halls- you've got the entire upper floor to yourselves, currently. The castle, as it turns out, has been kind of quiet since the war, but served, for a while, as a small academy. After that was moved, the place has been almost empty, except for a few witches and a caretaker staff. The renovations are newer- according to Ice, there were plans to re-open the academy here before the start of the war.

The way to the boss's office takes you through the corridors of the castle. It gives you a chance to look around- the stone walls are mostly bare, but the floor is carpeted. You'd thought that kind of odd, but it made sense after talking to Slider. As a witch holding, she'd said, and part of the air defense network protecting this area, someone decided back in the middle part of the 1960s that it made more sense to have carpeting and let the witches go without shoes, thus saving them time in a scramble.

You, however, note that most of them still wear shoes.

or in the hands of the foundation for testing.....
>>
The common area is much larger than you're used to, though right now it's occupied by enough unfamiliar faces that you don't feel like going down. You're pretty sure you see Rosalie and Katya down there, though, so at least you know where they are, if you want to go see them.

The boss's office is upstairs, and is actually probably one of the best in the building. Her name and squadron already adorn a plaque on the door- either they work fast, or they were waiting for some time. Her door is closed, and you knock, opening the door when she says “Enter.”

She looks up from a stack of papers and smiles tiredly. “Hi Frank, Samantha.”

“Afternoon, Boss.” you say, taking a seat- Merlin walks over to look out the window at the tarmac and the runway. “Merlin and I figured we should pop by and see if you had anything for us.”

Ice shakes her head. “Not right now, no. wait, actually, there is something-”

She shuffles through a pile of paper before handing you a bright silver whistle.

You turn it over in your hand. “Rescue whistle?” You ask, never thinking you'd have one- there's no point, and the stuff in your survival vest is far more effective in the long run.

She shrugs. “Tradition. You don't have to keep it on you, but I have to issue it to you.”

>>
>>29351933
Someone post the whistle now!!!
>>
You flip it over in your hands a few times, then pocket it, shrugging. “So no work?”

She shakes her head. “Not really, no. We're supposed to be getting some upgraded components in for your jets, and a new striker system- though I'm not sure what they mean by that. Once they're in, we'll have check flights to work through, and we all need to get some time up in the airspace anyway- especially you two. You would not believe how many of these women have asked to fly with you two so far.”

You laugh. “What have you told them?”

Ice grins. “To wait till we're settled in, then ask you.”

You roll your eyes, smiling. “Gee, thanks. Put all the work off on me. C'mon Merlin, let's bug out before she comes up with something for us.”

Ice smiles. “Dog that hatch behind you. If it's open, people think it's an open invitation to come in here and chat. It's not so bad when it's any of us, but I'm already getting sick of the rest of them.”

You laugh, stepping out of her office and wondering where to go now.

[x] Well, Katya and Rosalie were down in the common area, let's head there.

You decide to head down to the commons- while there were a bunch of witches down there, you figure you would like to spend some time with Katya, and Rosalie is always good company too- plus, you're pretty sure you saw Jean-luc down there as well.

Backtracking from Ice's office, you walk through the hall, noting the display cases- and the inordinate numbers of MG42s in them. You make a mental note to ask about that, when you get the chance.

Heading down the stairs from the walk above, Katya calls up in greeting.

“Hello, Frank.” She says. “Are you feeling better?”

You shrug. “I was never hurt.” You say, mindful of Merlin. “They didn't seem to know what happened.”

“Well, luv, that's what we're here to find out.” One of the matrons says. “There's a lot of theories going around about you two.” She takes a sip of tea.

Katya shrugs, then moves over enough on the couch to make room for you and Merlin.

You sit- and you're about to move over for Merlin when she wedges herself between you and Katya, forcing you to move the other way.

“So what do you think happened?” You ask. The gathered group of witches.

Katya shrugs. “I am unsure, Frank.” She says, shaking her head. “This is... unlike anything we have ever seen.”

The matron nods. “What you two did was incredible, luv. But there's more questions than answers.”

“Well,” you say, “We know for sure that it was sparkles.”

Rosalie nods. “Oui, Frank, but what kind? Even Samantha isn't strong enough to do that alone. Perhaps it is part of her unique talent- maybe she is sensitive to machines?”

Merlin's head swivels back and forth, tracking whoever's speaking- her eyes getting wider as the conversation goes on.

The matron sips her tea again. “It's possible, luv.” She says, holding out a saucer with a teacup on it towards you- you decline, but Merlin takes one and a few small biscuits, eliciting a smile from the matron- “but it would be the first time anything like that has happened.”

“I believe it was partially Frank.” Katya says. “In California, when we crashed, while he was attempting to save that airplane, I felt....” She trails off, looking for words. “Something. I am unsure what it was, and it was as if it was a great distance away. But there was something there.”

Merlin nods, happy that someone else, at least, agrees with her, finally. “I-I'm really not all t-that strong.” She says. “I-I can't e-even power a striker. It's all- all Frank.”

The matron leans back, looking at you. “Is it?”

Merlin nods. “I-I'm sure of it. It's L-like being plugged into the sun when we're in a fight o-or something happens. B-but...” She trails off, looking distressed.

Slight nitpick, but shouldn't Ice report to whoever the Commander of the Atlantic fleet is, since we're under his jurisdiction?

Technically yes. But don't think Nixon doesn't have a bit of influence even in the Atlantic.

No. Nixon is the only admiral we can trust. We should report it to Captain Blackwell before we bother him about it, though.
>>
>>29354631
That isn't really clear at the moment. We're apparently no longer attached to the Saratoga or any other carrier right now, and we're stationed at fucking crazy castle alone so she basically has no one to report to until more orders come down from somewhere.

[x] “But what, Merlin?”

“But what, Merlin?” You prompt.

She sighs, then continues. “B-but it's not- not always there. I-it's only t-there when we're i-in trouble or s-something.” She says.

The matron sits back in her chair, and you notice some others have arrived, taking seats in the vacant couches and chairs.

“So, what about Berlin, then, dear?” She asks. “More tea?”

“N-no, thank you.” Merlin responds. “A-and I don't k-know. I-it was different, l-like...” She trails off, shaking her head. “I-I don't know. I-I'm sorry. M-maybe if I w-was Ice o-or Rosalie or m-my sister I'd b-be smart enough to s-say.”

The matron smiles gently. “Samantha, luv, you're the closest witch to Frank. You know what's going on better than any of us, and we're all new here. Don't worry about not knowing right now, we're going to work that out, and we'll need your help.”

“And you are very intelligent, little sister.” Katya says, reaching an arm around Merlin's shoulders and pulling her closer. “I wish I had your smarts.”

“T-thanks.” Merlin says, though she doesn't sound convinced. “I-I just wish I c-could be more h-help.”

“This is as Matron Knight said, Merlin.” Rosalie responds. “It is new ground for us all, oui? You are already very helpful, and we will need you to learn more about this.”

>>
“And remember what happened to Patty when she tried out your seat?” You ask, jostling Merlin till she has to re-seat her glasses on her nose. “I'd say you were plenty strong on your own.”

Merlin looks up at you, but doesn't respond.

The room lapses into silence for a minute, then Rosalie breaks it.

“Frank,” She says, “And Merlin, Jean-luc wants to meet you both, I almost forgot. He isn't here right now, he took a jeep into town, but when he gets back, perhaps?”

You nod- seems like a fine idea.

She smiles. “Merci. He has been carrying on about meeting le mort blanc. It's getting tiring.”

You laugh at that. “We can get somewhat troublesome at times, eh?”

“Yes!” both Katya and Rosalie respond- almost in unison.

You laugh again.

“F-Frank, I-I'm hungry.” Merlin says. “C-can we go get food?”

Merlin wants to get food, and possibly talk. The alternative is hang out in a room with Rosalie, who's okay; Katya, who's been noticeably cooler to Frank lately; and Matrons, who in Frank's limited experience are generally Up To Something.

Honestly I've been thinking that Young and Minna are in that very large group of relationships of pilots and witches that don't work.

They had a kid, but odds are their marriage (if they even married) spiraled into a catastrophic failure that served as a lesson to future witches.

Kinda depressing though really. So i cheer myself up with the though of dudebro with the twins being the luckiest motherfucker on that planet. I mean seriously, twins AND witches.

Kat was they're youngest and it's pretty much confirmed that they are still together... you haven't been paying attention have you?

Yea Joe. Guy probably gets bought beers in every bar and will forever be hit up for tips and advice on women.

Oh? Why would you think like that?

I'm and Ice and Slider fag but voted for this since I thought they made a good point.

Not to mention it's too late to change it know

Well maybe i did. I thought Kat was a granddaughter. Perhaps i should reread that chapter while i wait.

Does it matter? We should still talk to her about it, it's the right thing to do. That choice just confuses me, there was no plus side to not listening to the jet.

voted for what? To take Katya recklessly dogfighting or to talk with her now? Honestly I don't care about this vote.

[x] Yeah, let's go. I'm sure there's a kitchen around here somewhere.

You nod, standing up- Merlin follows quickly follows suit. “We're off to find the kitchen.” you state. “But we enjoyed the conversation.”

Matron Knight smiles. “As did we, luv. Expect to have more in the future.”

You smile. “Looking forward to it. Now, about that kitchen...”

She chuckles. “Downstairs to the left.”

“Thanks kindly.” you respond, setting off for the stairs.

The kitchen is empty- You're not hungry, though you help Merlin with her sandwich- which ends up being about as big as your head. You've got no doubt she can eat it.

She's halfway through when she pauses. “I-Ice didn't want anyone else to know about this, b-but I made a new sensor for our jet.” She says. “I-it can track magic directly. I-I was using the electric sensor to do it, b-but that's not real good for the job.”

You lean back. “Aren't magic sensors impossible? I seem to recall hearing that somewhere.”

She shakes her head. “N-no, but they need magic to run. I-it's nothing major, B-but I thought it would be nice to have i-if we ever have to f-fight the Russian again.”

You nod. “Yeah, Yeah I'd say so. Is it integrated with the rest of the displayed sensors?”

She takes a moment to look pained. “P-please.” She says, an all-too-rare smile playing faintly about her lips. “W-Who do you think I a-am?”

You laugh. “You're something else, Sam.” You say, leaning back. “It's flat amazing what you do.”

She looks down at her plate- now empty. “I-it's really n-not all that much.” She says, her flash of good humor gone. “I-I just get l-lucky.”

“Hardly.” You state. “You've got skill and talent and a hell of a lot of brains, kiddo.”

“I-I'm not-” She starts, but you cut her statement off.

“You are great, and don't make me start giving you plane rides around the castle.” You say. “I'm crazy enough to do it.”

She nods. “O-ok. No Plane rides.”

You'll class that one a victory.

Right guys, I'm going to call it here. Short run, I know, but I'm beat as all hell, and still recovering from the holiday schedule they had us on. We'll start early next week to make up for it, though.

Anyway, hope you all are glad to be back with Frank and company- I kind of am. Breaks are fun and all, but sometimes you miss the original crew.

As always, I hope you guys had fun, sorry for how short the run was tonight. Like I said, we'll run extra next week.

TIll then guys, cheers!

As they'd gotten closer to Elemdorf, Holly grew more anxious to get down to the hangar. That had been obvious to the other three witches in the flight, but to her pleasant surprise, Chris had been the one to shut down the barrage of questions before they started to cross into 'dangerous' territory. She even offered to handle the paperwork for the flight's second patrol. Holly tried to protest this, it wasn't proper protocol after all, but Chris rejected all of her arguments in one sentence:

"You have a date."

"Chris, I'm the Wing Commander, I can't just pass off work to you because I-"

"YOU. HAVE. A DATE."

Landing had thankfully gone a lot smoother compared to the the previous night. The weather was clearer, the winds were mild, and Holly wasn't coming away from a fight for her life. Her strikers were't about to eject her from the interface due to her exhausted magic, though on reflection having Wilkins be one of the guys who caught her was nice to think about.

As promised, Will had waited for Holly despite her late arrival, bringing her striker stand out to greet her. Seeing that he'd actually stuck around brought her a sense of relief. In the cart next to him were her boots and hat, an amused expression on his face as he waved at her. As soon as her strikers were secured, she pushed herself out of them, handed her weapons to one of the nearby ordnance handlers, and ran as quickly as she could to Will to collect her boots. As she ran, she pulled her mission clipboard free from her thigh strap, trying to see how she had miscalculated her flight time. With her free hand she tried to smooth her hair out, all the while telling herself that she probably looked ridiculous.
>>
>>29356786
"Sorry I'm so late!" Holly arrived in front of Will totally flustered, hopping back and forth on her feet. "Gawd, the ground's cold- I'm looking at my flight profile and I have no idea where I got-"

"You don't have to apologize," Will laughed, handing over her boots and her cowboy hat, kicking a seat into place behind her so she could sit down and put the boots on. "I kinda figured you were doing your job."

"You have a job too," Holly frowned. "And you've probably been off-shift for a while at this point." She looked down at her boots as she slipped them on, suddenly finding their construction to be intensely fascinating. "You didn't have to wait around for me. Thanks."

"Of course I had to wait!" Will said. "it wouldn't be a very good start for a movie night if I hadn't waited for you, right?"

"Y-yeah," Holly smiled awkwardly, finally able to look up at Will. Had he always been so much taller that she was? He had mentioned something about football the other day, but as far as she was concerned right then he could have been playing basketball for the San Antonio Spurs. "I'd be pissed...then I think I'd ask for directions to your pla-" Her voice caught. "We're going to your place now?"

"Can't be yours, and I'm not gonna push for special exceptions or anything." He pointed over to an unoccupied jeep just outside of the hangar. "That's our ride. I've got pizza waiting for us- sorry, nothing fancy tonight- and the VHS is set up. Shall we?"

"I like pizza," Holly said in a small voice, following Will closely.
>>
>>29356819
>"I like pizza," Holly said in a small voice, following Will closely.

Holy fuck why is she so cute now goddamn!
>>
>>29356819
"HEY HOLLY!" Chris shouted from behind them, waving at the couple wildly from her striker stand. "We'll try not to tear the place up too much while you're gone tonight!" She blew a very theatrical kiss, clinging to her striker stand in an exceedingly suggestive fashion. "Haaaaaaaaave fuuuuuun kiddo~!"

"CHRIS! OHMIGOD!" Holly roared, ready to climb out of the jeep and maul her best friend.

"TAKE GOOD CARE OF BILLY WILLY FOR US COLONEL!" one of the technicians next to Chris tried to emulate her unique pose on the other side of her striker stand, only to end up performing what appeared to be an interpretive pole-dance routine before falling over.

"YEAH, GET THAT LOSER OUT OF HERE, HE'S BEEN MOPING AROUND FOR HOURS!" added another.

Defeated by embarrassment, Holly collapsed back into her seat, and Will grumbled something under his breath.

"Get us out of here," Holly pleaded.

"Gladly, you buckled?"

Holly swore she could hear cheering over the squealing tires of the jeep. At least Will seemed as embarrassed about it as she was.

-
>>
>>29356846
The ride over to Will's barracks had been mostly in silence. Holly didn't know what exactly to say, what to talk about. She did take some solace in the fact that Will apparently was no better off.

Part of her was wondering if she was letting her imagination get the best of her. For all intents and purposes, she really had only met Will a few days ago, and things hadn't exactly been pleasent for her. Maybe the fact that he'd been so nice was affecting her judgement. It was like he'd said: she didn't outright disdain to distrust the ground crews, but her focus definitely leaned more towards her fellow witches. She'd hardly talked to him, much less anyone else in the ground crews.

She couldn't bring herself to just outright ask why he *really* bothered asking to see a movie with her, why now of all times. That would have been rude.

But there had to be a catch.

Right?

It wasn't as though she'd never had interest in men. Almost ten solid years of specialized schooling, training, and service to her country made such things feel completely out of reach, not to mention out of place given her rank and position. The typical twenty-year-old woman was likely trying to enter a decent college, and most likely wasn't fussing about their first date. She'd even gotten used to the fact that she'd stayed single all this time, it certainly made things easier as a commanding officer.
>>
>>29356909
"Yeah, I uh figured I'd go with the basics," Will sounded just as tense, pulling the jeep into a slow left turn towards his barracks. "Pepperoni, extra cheese...Pizza Hut's not the best, but they were open and close to the base for delivery...maybe I should have waited till you got back in, asked you what you wanted-"

"Nono, it's fine-"

"It is?"

"Yeah." Holly wondered if he could hear the rumbling from her stomach over the wind rushing past the jeep. "After two patrols, I'm just hoping you ordered enough for us both."

"Two extra large pies?" He asked hopefully.

"I'm getting the impression that you're trying to spoil me, Will." She beamed at the Tech Sergeant. "Warm boots, warm poncho, free food..."

"Nothin' wrong with that is there?"

"Not at all."

-

'It's like I'm a kid all over again,' Holly thought, hesitating at the door to Will's room. She could hear her mother telling her to stop pestering the boys in her elementary school class, remember conversations with old friends long since moved on with their lives about cooties. She could hear her own arguments about mixed units, and felt like a brazen hypocrite.

She didn't quite hear Will welcoming her to his 'humble abode', acknowledging him with a softly uttered "Thanks" and asking if she needed to take her boots off. She also felt a tinge of jealousy when she realized that there didn't seem to be a second bed in the room, which meant that he had way more living space that she did back at the witch barracks if he really did live by himself.
>>
>>29356938
Holly was also distracted by the smell of delicious pizza, and by all the...stuff Wilkins had. The walls were mostly bare, save for a Star Wars movie poster on one, a beautiful sunset shot of a pair of F-15C's somewhere over California on another. She could appreciate his taste on the latter, as would most of the Fighting Mudhens, many of the girls in the Wing flew strikers derived from the Eagle. One of the walls was occupied by a bookshelf filled with novels spanning multiple genres, another set of shelves filled with VHS movies. Leaning against the shelves was a guitar case.

What really caught her attention was next to the TV was a Nintendo Entertainment System. Holly actually squealed with delight upon seeing it, blushing immediately when Will started laughing.

"I take it you like that?"

"We have one set up in the witch barracks rec room." Holly tried to dial back her excitement a bit. "I...like playing against the girls every now and then." She managed to tear her eyes away from a box sitting next to the NES, certain it was filled with games, and made her way over to the shelves filled with VHS movies. On passing glance she could see every single Dirty Harry, the Star Wars Trilogy, Tron, Batman, BOTH Ghostbusters...

"Will, you have...everything good in movies," Holly spoke almost reverently. In one hand she had Roger Rabbit, in the other was Crocodile Dundee. Realizing that she'd taken them without permission, she yelped and put them back in place.

"Not everything, but I'm working on it."

"How do you move all this? I mean, it's not like we'll stay here forever..."

"With lots of help," he admitted, holding up an opened box of pizza and letting the aroma wafting through the room. Holly's stomach noticeably growled. "Wanna eat?"

"Y-yes, please."

-
>>
>>29356972
True to Holly's warnings, her hunger ensured that they'd finished off the first pie and were moving on to the second. They ended up not even starting the movie for another hour, just talking and laughing at short stories they told eachother about their younger years.

William Wilkins was twenty two, almost twenty three, and the first member of his family to join the military in generations. He was already out of his house by sixteen, graduating high school and leaving Colorado to move in with friends at Seattle. The hope had been to try and make it in the burgeoning music scene there, explaining his possession of a guitar. Within a couple years of working minimum wage jobs to support himself while trying to attend college and struggling to maintain interest in football, it was apparent that this plan wasn't going to happen. The Air Force had options that fit in with his mechanical aptitude. That, and as he sheepishly admitted, it didn't hurt that his recruitment counselor had been a witch.

"And so here I am, eating pizza with you," he finished with a grin, pouring himself more soda. "The Air Force has treated me well, I'd say."

Holly MacLeod's own history was (obviously) less interesting than his (so she said). She'd been picked up by the Air Force Academy early in her life, lifted away from her family farm in Texas at the age of ten.

"Do you ever miss home?" Will asked. "I know that witches get picked up early, but that seems...harsh.

"I do miss the farm, and I do miss Mom and Dad." Holly's gaze naturally traveled to the roof overhead, remembering that she still needed to call home, feeling a lump growing in her throat. "But Mom was- is a witch, and Dad was a tanker. They support me no matter what, and I always try to visit home for leave, so it's not bad at all."
>>
>>29357017
She'd been put on the fast track for a command role early on. Graduating from the USAF witch academy at fourteen years of age, Holly impressed the hell out of her first CO and was made a Flight Lead. For the next six years it was assignment after assignment, bouncing back and forth between the lower 48 and Alaska, with one pre-war tour in Germany. It was there that Holly finally earned the rank of Colonel, and inherited the 3rd Wing from the CO she'd followed since her graduation. And now the war was putting everything to the test.

"I dunno, that sounds exciting to me," Will said, closing the second pizza box and nudging it in Holly's direction. "I mean, a Colonel and Wing Commander at your age?"

"I don't think it's exciting...not as much as just flying is at any rate," Holly said, picking up the box and trying to shift the conversation away from herself. "I can take this home with me, right?" He merely smiled and nodded; he was done with pizza for at least a week at this point.

"I'm guessing you're permanently modest or something," Will pointed at the silver bird on her camo-shirt lapel "but to me that suggests you've really worked for the rank." She opened her mouth to protest, but he shook his head. "Nope. I know about how witch ranks work differently from the rest of us. I'm still pretty sure you earned it."

"P-permanently modest?" She laughed nervously. "Lets...watch that movie before I get more embarrassed."

"Yeah sure." Standing up to start the VHS, he winced upon looking at the time. "Wild Bunch is a long movie, and it is kinda late."

"I-" she looked at the digital clock next to Will's bed, then at Will, then at the door, then at the TV, then at the tape in his hands. Her gaze went straight down to her hands. "Maybe we shouldn't...but-" She could already hear the laughter from Chris in her head. Looking back up, she saw Will grinning and waiting patiently for her answer.

"I did some good today, so I'll treat myself!" She tried to muster a determined growl in her voice, but ended up still sounding coy. "Go ahead and start it up, Will."

-

Over two and half hours later, Holly was fighting back tears, silently mourning the deaths of characters she'd seen die maybe a dozen times before. Will wasn't sure what to do, apologizing and thinking he'd done something wrong. Holly insisted that everything was fine, better than fine actually.

"Pizza, soda, a nice warm room insulated from the cold, good company, and a good movie? I can't ask for much more," she sniffled and chuckled at the same time, her face flushing a shade of red that threatened to match her hair color. "I just always feel bad for the Wild Bunch in the end, that's all."

"I know how that feels," Will admitted. "I uh...I cried when Han Solo got frozen in carbonite."

"You too?"

-

It was well past late o'clock when Will ended up driving Holly back to her barracks.

The night sky was surprisingly clear, reminding Holly of the recent, more peaceful past. Other than the distant roar of steelwings and night witches coming from and going on patrols, you could swear that at least for tonight, the war had been put on hold. She was glad for that, glad that he seemed content to enjoy the silence between them. It gave her time to try and wrap her head around the whole date. There was nothing wrong about having the date to begin with, but she felt hypocritical at the same time. She used to get after her girls for arriving late and drunk after a long night out. Then again she wasn't getting plastered out of her mind, so-

Nope, definitely still a hypocrite no matter how much she tried to justify it.

She didn't feel as bad about that as she thought she should.
>>
>>29357318
"Thanks for coming over tonight," he said as they pulled up to the witch barracks. "Sorry it's so late though."

"It's fine, I'll still get enough sleep before the first patrol." Holly patted the half-full pizza box on her lap, struggling to come up with something better to say than just- "Th-thanks for the dinner and movie."

'Damnit, MacLeod.'

"It was fun!" Will nodded. "Maaaaybe next time I'll pick something that doesn't make you cry."

"Next time?" Holly managed to ask.

"Well..." Will was picking at the seat cushion, avoiding eye contact with the witch. "I figure since you like movies so much..."

"...You do have a lot of movies, but I wouldn't want to impose-"

"You're hardly imposing, MacLeod. I'm inviting you."

They finally looked at eachother. Holly decided that the grin on Will's face could definitely be classified as 'stupid', but that was okay because hers probably wasn't any better.

"Since you asked so nicely," she said. "I accept the invitation."

"Well I wasn't gonna force you, obviously," Will laughed.

"And can we also play something on your Nintendo?"

"I do have Contra."

"Good." She let herself out of the jeep, but lingered next to it for a moment, taking another look at Will.

She still didn't really understand why she'd come to his attention. She'd spent the whole date waiting for the inevitable questions about the availability of Chris or any of the other witches in her command. Holly expected this, because she didn't want to feel quite as hurt when he asked about that cute witch she flew with all the time.

Except that it hadn't happened. He had genuinely asked to see a movie with her specifically because it was her.

Maybe she was 'easy to please' or whatever else Chris would have joked about, but William Wilkins was terribly likable to Holly MacLeod at that moment.

"Tomorrow night?" Holly asked.

"Tomorrow," Will agreed.

Holly had waited by the barracks door, watching Will as he drove off. Once he was out of sight, she pushed her way through the front door of the barracks, acknowledging the salute from the witch on fire-watch, failing to wipe the smile off her face. She had to stop herself from running, almost prancing down the hallway to the rec room, only slowing down when she saw that a gaggle of witches had fallen asleep in front of the projector screen. After leaving the pizza in the fridge, she quietly made her way back to her quarters, feeling mortified by her actions.

'What am I, fifteen? Seriously, MacLeod...'

The lights in her room were still on, and as Holly both expected and dreaded, Chris was awake and waiting for her friend to return.

"I was actually kinda worried." Chris yawned, clearly at the limits of consciousness, but Holly's return seemed to restore some of her strength. "You're back a lot later than I expected."

"Why'd you stay up so late waiting for me?" Holly groaned as she tossed off the poncho and flopped onto her bed. "I'd have told you how things went in the morning!"

"Well, I *am* curious," Chris snickered, then licked her lips suggestively. "Was he any good?"

Growling and giggling, Holly grabbed a pillow and rushed her friend, scoring a good smack upside her head. "Nothing happened," she cried out. "Nothing like that!"

"It was worth asking." Chris smacked a part of her own bed, beckoning Holly to sit down next to her. "Alright alright, I'm gonna pay in the morning for staying up late, so you'd better have a good story to make it worth the trouble! Spill it!"

"He bought us pizza, and we watched a movie. He has a Nintendo, and we've both admitted to crying while watching Empire Strikes Back." Holly hugged the pillow against herself. "He also plays the guitar."

"Good lord Holly, he sounds *really* good." Holly's pillow landed straight on Chris' face, muffling more laughter. "Did he play it for you?"

"No...but he does have that NES, so we're gonna play it tomorrow- er, later today. And maybe watch another movie. Maybe he'll show off the guitar afterwards?"

"You're going out again?!"

"Yeah..." Holly sighed happily. "I didn't think that would happen, but he was really nice, and we had a lot of fun."

"My little girl's growing up so fast..." Chris sniffled, fighting back mock tears. "A man warms her boots, spends one night with her and now she's ready to bear his children-"

The resulting omni-pillow barrage left Chris gasping for breath from all her laughter.
