Sup /tg/. My dad recently died and wanted to be cremated. Being the oldest son and him being divorced, I got the cremains. I was thinking, since I don't really hold much stigma about disposition or whatever that they would be great for basing material or something, plus it'd be neat to say I'm still playing games "with Dad" as well. What are some creative ideas you guys would have to use these, or are they pretty much just good for basing material?

Pic related. The bag of his ashes straight from the temporary box from the funeral home.

Using it as a graying pigment in paint is probably your best bet. There are a bunch of tutorials around the 'net for paint-making, but the easy way is just a drop or so of gum, water, and whatever pigments you're using.

Also, ignore the asshole anons. What you do with the ashes is between you and your dad, and I've heard of a lot worse ideas than making art.

At least get him a nice vase or something, don't keep him in a bag like groceries. My ex was (is?) keeping her dad like that (talk about daddy issues).
Using him for basing is IMHO bad idea, moral ambiguity aside, you'll be getting better effect by using plastic craps painted as ashes than by using actual ashes.
Besides - did he show any interest in your hobbies when he was still alive? Dragging him along now just because he can't say no is bad sport. Find him some peaceful place to rest instead, preferably with good view.

His ex-wife probably wants nothing to do with the man's ashes, but I agree that there are other folks to consider.

When my great-grandpa died his sons couldn't agree on what to do, so they split the ashes up. I would recommend splitting the ashes up between you and your brothers with an express agreement that you will each honor your dad in the way YOU see best, and that there will be no making fun of or second guessing one another's decisions.

Well OP... people sometimes use their loved one's cremains to be spread across a field, others choose to have them fired out of a cannon, and others choose to put them in ammunition for hunting. I don't see why you can't use them for other things.

Ok Bear with me, Ashes can be used to cast Concrete, so you must cast your dad "cremains" on that, then cast a figurine of your dad, then you will have a minidad figurine or cast a big statue and place it in your yard.

The fact that warhams tend to be played by fat people doesn't mean playing warhams gets people fat. It's okay to have sedetary hobby as long as it's not your only hobby.

Well op, it's your dad so do whatever you feel he would prefer, we can't really judge that.

For example if it was my case I really don't care what people decide to do with my remains, they can feed me to the pigs as as far as I care because I am fucking dead. Actually that wouldn't be a bad idea, funeral related stuff is way too expensive and I would be making my family save money.

That being said, I feel that, as a beloved father; he deserves more than a common dreadnaught.

OP, this depends on whether you want to make something for yourself or something to remember your dad by.

if you want to make something for yourself, make something that you will use frequently and will be durable and made to last

if you want to make something to remember him by, think of something he might want to be a part of and try to incorporate his remains into that item somehow.

Basing material always flecks off everywhere, and I don't want a dead dude shedding ash and bone all over my case, store, tables, or other peoples models. At least sticking him inside a mini contains the remains and through an imaginative stretch is not so dissimilar to a decorative urn.

Funeral director here. Cremains are bone fragments and dust from other leftover bodies in the retorts that couldn't get scraped out the first go around. "Ashes" do look like that, and "coffins" are very seldom put in, unless they're wooden or fiberboard. Typically, bodies are placed in large cardboard boxes. It heats up to 1800-2200 degrees F, typically, so all that's left is really just calcium and whatever doesn't have a boiling point above those temperatures, like most metals (fillings, prostheses, etc)
>>
>>29417884

Yeah, most coffins in Europe are wood, that's why I said that. I'm surprised at the plastic bag thing, over here you normally get a plastic or glass urn.

What do you do if someone has a whole metal hip that won't burn away?

You can't just jam it in the urn.

>What do you do if someone has a whole metal hip that won't burn away?

In the UK, the NHS usually wants the metal bits back. Otherwise, the crematorium sells the metals off for scrap.
>>
>>29418015

The plastic bag just catches the cremains, then those are put into the plastic box from
>>29414968

The metal replacements get thrown away into a hazardous materials container, and other things that the machine won't grind, such as metal dental fillings, are sifted out with a magnet after the bone fragments have been scrapped into a trough after cremation. After the metal parts are removed (including screws, nails, bolts, etc), the bones are then ground into those "ashes."

I think you mean "susceptible" not sensible.

But yeah - what has to be understood about metals is that there's the substance and there's the 3D structure of the crystalline lattice that the substance can form, and it's this crystal lattice that ultimately detirmines the structual properties of the finished material - the reason why FeO tends to destroy metal when it forms while TiO forms a protective layer is because FeO warps the local lattice and flakes off and TiO doesn't.

But heat up Ti and the lattice will shake itself slightly looser than usual, and then cool in odd and less structurally sound ways, and you'll have nano and pico scale cracks throughout the material.

Give it to the NHS or similar medical supplier and they'll melt it down again before recasting, often saving them the cost of having to repurchase the metal at market rates and the risk of ending up with metal of the wrong quality and purity.

Yeah sorry, english isn't my first language.

The problem here is more than at those temperatures, there is a risk that the grain boundaries within the metal will melt (metals are made of a lot of crystalline grains of different orientations, pic related it's aluminium but you can see the grains).

The grain boundaries are most likely to melt because their composition varies from the grain itself (a metallic alloy is rarely homogenous) and thus the melting point will be lower.

Also, heating a metal will usually close the small cracks within as the atoms have the energy to "get back into their place". The ceramics, on the other hand...

If OP is planning to put the ashes/cremated remains into a Dreadnaught, my advice would be to do it with a larger statue, rather than a tabletop mini. Sculpt it 1:20 scale, and either put the remains into a compartment inside and seal them in, a la a more traditional urn, or mix them in with whatever material you use to create the statue. Make a nice display base for it, too, with a nameplate or inscription on it.

Then put it on the mantel, or something.

Actually, I was just talking to a friend who works for the main company that makes the actual bits that go into a hip replacement.

Their product costs $300 to produce.
They sell it to healthcare providers for $5,000-$8,000.
This becomes $18,000-$30,000 for the consumer, BEFORE the actual cost of the surgery or hospital stay comes into play.

And THAT is why a privatized healthcare system is fucking stupid.

There's been an governmental attitude about the Necromantic Health Service in the last couple of decades that it should "be cost effective"... which largely seems to mean cutting the funding it needs to employ nurses, doctors and obtain neccesary medical supplies, so there's been weird "Cost saving" measures like reclaiming metal hips and stuff.

There was also a scandal a few years back because it turned out a few hospitals had been getting around shortages in the number of tissue donors and the costs associated with buying from the international donor market by straight up harvesting stuff from patients who died in hospital without telling the relatives.

For added surrealness it was only discovered because a nurse in a hospital that had quietly stopped the practice found an old but still running fridge of body parts in a storeroom and started asking questions.

Part of the reason they do that is so that patients don't have to be put on years-long waiting lists for procedures like in the NHS. Saw this conversation pretty late- But as a licensed funeral director, I feel obligated to weigh in a bit after browsing through the comments.

First off- it doesn't look like the crematory they used pulverized the cremated remains very well, but either way- its all the same.

As far as mixing the cremated remains into paint- there are already companies that will, for a price, mix cremated remains into paint and use said paint to create a portrait of the decedent. So as for using them to paint minis- I'm sure it wouldn't be too terrible.

Sorry about your dad's passing. Keep it real.

Thank you from bringing the French and German systems to my attention, I can only give a cursory glance to them at this time, but I'll be doing further research as a result. France's system isn't state-run, and it SURE as fuck isn't single-payer like the Canadian or UK systems. Without spending a few hours on research as I've done with the Canadian system (I can't find a formal name, if anyone knows of one, please let me know) and NHS: The patients in the French system get reimbursed for their healthcare expenditures along a sliding scale, and the German system seems to be akin to a mix of American worker's compensation and Medicare, systems that Americans tend to be quite fond of.

Part of the problem the US has is our for-profit INSURANCE and the entire damn insurance system. They have to serve two masters as a result of their nature as both publicly traded AND for-profit entities: their shareholders, and their subscribers. Like anything, they can't serve two masters, and they have a legal obligation to server their shareholders' interests, leaving their subscribers in the dust.

>>29421681
Dude, if your idea of insurance is that you can get AIDS and then go to an insurance company and not have to pay more, then you are mistaking the two, which is exemplified by the fact the new law enshrined this silly notion that pre-existing condition restriction are some evil ploy to kill American and take their money.

My family has both a healthcare plan, which allows essentially "free" access to hospital, test, specialist, and the whole lot as long as we keep within certain bounds and go do regular check ups (as in, once a year check ups), and we have an insurance plan, where essentially in cases of great emergency they will pay a good deal of the costs.

Then, to finish it off, we have a public healthcare system, but it essentially works like the last resort: it's free, mostly, but you can wait up to a month to get a specialist, and operations can take weeks of planning. If you need an emergency, prepare to pay. So most people just use the private healthcare and ignore the public one.

Things aren't so good in the UK right now in terms of the NHS.
Basically, the Government is systematically turning a brilliant public health scheme into their own personal shitfarm, to the extent that, if allowed to continue, eventually the entire NHS will be privatised.

Effectively, we will lose the NHS, and all so that Cameron and his mates can buy a new duck pond or whatever...
>>
>>29422001
>can buy a new duck pond or whatever.

Don't they make a big-ass model that they scale down these days for 40k? You could e-mail GW and ask for an original-sculpt scale dread to inter his ashes.
>>
>>29422001
Labour is privatizing the NHS? Well fuck me. I might dislike public healthcare because I have never seen it work better than the private one when both exist at the same time, but that's just retarded.

Let us sell all our powerplants to that shady Russian magnate called Chadimir Butin retarded.

>>29422053
>2 petrol airship carriers
I know that keeping your hegemony and all that, but what the fuck do these people need a fucking aircraft carrier? The royal navy has always had as a doctrine to use missiles, detection, and speed as its weapons. What the fuck will aircraft carriers do for that?
>>
>>29422092
>What the fuck will aircraft carriers do for that?

Government telling people that they can't sell their or their loved ones' organs and can only donate them (because ewwwww...), thus effectively creating a price ceiling at P=0 and causing a horrendous shortage.

I'll take my 500 points now.
>>
>>29421841
Both of those are responses to me anyway, so...

>But, for 500 points, what makes this not be possible?
I'm guessing you know something I don't, so please, share.
For a guess from what I do know? Fear of lawsuits, over-regulation, and/or lack of organ donors?
>Dude, if your idea of insurance...
Obviously not. My point is that a lot of Americans don't understand the difference between a healthcare plan and having an insurance policy. Nothing more, nothing less. Insurance companies DO fuck over policy holders by abusing "preexisting conditions" by refusing to pay for anything that could possibly fall under said clause.

I really don't what your government is thinking. You don't destroy your public healthcare system, you encourage the creation of a private one and allow the public one to become the last resort option so that you save money while attending the truly needy.

We /do/ have a private system.
The problem is that the Tory party has little to no interest in the middle and lower classes, and has really only been looking to line their own pockets since they got into power.
I think the only thing that's been keeping the UK from falling over the brink is the fact that we're in a coalition government, so the Lib-dems can keep the worst of the Tory bum-fuckery off our backs.

Even so, any kid who doesn't go to Cambridge or Eaton (most of them) is going to have one hell of a time when the new exam system comes into play.
Gods, it's a wonder Cameron hasn't been shot already...

Still, the country has a history of being run by idiots.

Just use the ashes for a dark ritual, fuck.
>>
>>29415014
I'm friends with a a cremation tech. It ... depends, especially on how thick a person's bones were and how high you throw the temperature. My friend talked about how one lady was mortified because her husband's arthritic finger bones were nearly intact and recognizable because it was so advanced and hypercalcifed in areas.
>>
>>29415097
Plastic figure paint is a real shit way to honor someone, and not at all similar momskull wearing pokemon. OP should think about his father and his fathers interest. For example a woman's dad was a gunsmith, so she shot him out of a canon he built during his life. If he was a real family man, dividemhis ashes in to small containers and give it out to the people closest to him. If he was a religous man, an urn with a portrait of him while he was alive with in a small shrine with, depending on religion, a holy symbol (like a crucifix for a christian). Hell, store his ashes in an 8ft long dragon dildo and fuck his exwife with it (but actually, no). Get an urn, put the ashes ina urn, and think a good long time about what to do with those ashes.

> 238
Well
Even that's not really accurate, there are colonial traditions stretching back more like 400 years, the East Coast in particular. Between the Dutch, Spanish, and to a lesser extent the French and half the Scandinavian countries this country has all sorts of burial rites stretching back to the 1600's and almost none of them would allow for fucking around with bones or other materials of a dead body.

>>
>>29425578
but that's technically the history of the countries that sent the colonial forces.American history in this sense refers to America after it gained independence or America after it became fully united.

I've always thought that this is why you chaps have Renaissance fairs, because you missed out on having any real history so you pick and choose bits and make up some weird dark ages/medieval/Renaissance/early-industrial amalgamation and all pretend to speak early modern English while thinking it's old English.
