>Getting so much done
After leaving the mayor's office, you head home at a brisk pace and find your mother in the kitchen, reading as she drinks coffee. You tell her about the events that will soon take place, and that this town will likely be unsafe very soon, especially if someone finds out about the scouts you encountered. She is completely flabbergasted by the sudden influx of information. You let her take it all in as you begin packing bags for the both of you. You take all the rations you have, as well as your hunting gear and money. You also pack rope and canteens, filling them to the brim before stuffing them into the packs. Finally, you put together bedrolls and a small tent. When you go back to your mother, she is still sitting at the table, looking into her coffee. You allow her as much time as she needs to gather herself, and soon she does just that. She agrees that if things truly are going to be this bad, there's no other choice. But leaving now, she says, would draw attention, and proposes waiting until night, or even the early morning to start off.

A) Leave now. There's no time to waste
B) Leave at night. It'll be easier to avoid detection
C) Wait until morning. Nobody will suspect hunters heading out before sunrise

The two of you stay home until some time after midnight. You get a nap in and drink some coffee to perk yourself up. You mother doesn't seem to get much rest herself, but there's no time to worry about it now. The two of you grab your things and step out into the cold evening. Your breath steams in the moonlight as you shut the door behind you, forgoing the lock. If there's anything left in the house by the time you get back, you probably won't need it anyway.

You make your way down the road. The silent houses and buildings are eerie. You've never seen the town so quiet and dark. Usually you go hunting just as the farmers and fishermen are stirring as well, but today all is still. The moon is your only source of light as you head to the crossroads. There you come to a signpost that designates the roads that converge at that point. Your mother suggests heading east, to the empire. You're sure that the scouts you dealt with came from the Republic, so the Empire might be a good choice. To the west, the Republic serves as a land of freed men, and it might be much easier to make a new start. Finally, the south passes through Ranger lands, and they would have information on just about everything from both sides. They might even know where to locate a Sage, who could teach you magic. This would be the most treacherous path, however.

Your mother is very reluctant to head south, given the nature of the terrain and the inhabitants thereof. You tell her though, that in the long run the south is the safest place to be during this conflict. That, and that you may be able to do better there than in either of two countries warring with each other. She still refuses to put you in danger. You continue to assure her that you can handle yourself. Still, she demands to head to where it's safe.

You tell her that your decision is final, and begin walking down the south road. She watches you, shouting while still whispering, until finally she gives in and runs after you. When she catches up, she smacks you on the back of the head for being so stubborn. It smarts, but you feel in your heart that this will be the best path to take.

The two of you continue this way, silently stewing in frustration, until you reach the Feywood. This massive forest is strictly Ranger land, and though you are allowed to pass through it, there are many dangerous beasts dwelling within. There is also a second road that leads around the breadth of the forest, but taking it would add weeks to your journey. It is nearly sunrise now, and the both of you could use some rest, either way.

The two of you settle down and make camp on the edge of the Feywood. With the sun rising, there's no need for a fire, and so after a light snack you both get some sleep. You awake sometime before noon, but when you rub the sleep from your eyes, you find that your mother as well as a good portion of the hunting gear is gone. Her bedroll and other things still seem to be where they belong, however. You deduce that she must have gone into the Feywood to catch something for dinner. You're somewhat worried, having never hunted in the Feywood yourself.

You grab your knife and bow, as well as 5 arrows from your limited stock. This and a hide jacket are all you can bring with you into the depths of the feywood. You enter the treeline, following the trodden path and begin searching or your mother. The Feywood is large and vibrant, and all around you are the songs of birds and various creatures scurrying through the brush and branches. The stories of this place say that it is rich with magical energies, and it certainly feels that way. As you make your way deeper in, you spot a stag in the distance. At first it seems normal, but when you look a little longer you realize that it's antlers are sprouting buds and small leaves. A bird swoops by, and it's tail-feathers weave a trail of incandescent light in all colors behind. This is a strange place. The further you go, the more odd the creatures seem to become. You spy flowers with petals that move and dance about, and a line of ants carrying an entire pheasant on their backs.

Finally you lose track of the path, and seem to be lost. You climb a nearby tree to get a better look at your surroundings, but it's as if the forest twisted itself around you. The path is nowhere to be seen. The only landmarks you can make out from here are a particularly large tree and a small spring. The spring looks tempting, as a drink does sound good right about now, but you think the large tree might provide a better vantage point, and should probably take priority.

You move through the branches, keeping your eye on the large tree so as not to lose track of it's location. Eventually you make it to the base, and see that it is much wider than you had originally anticipated. Still, with some effort you manage to climb up to the lowest branch. You rest for a moment once you get there, and then begin ascending higher. Further up, you find an odd sort of protrusion in the trunk. You use it as a handhold, but are startled when it shifts and move beneath your grip. you let go and let yourself slip further down, wary of what might occur next. You see the protrusion take the form of a deformed face, complete with a single eye and a mouth. The eye, the pupil of which is merely a knothole in the tree, looks down at you. A booming voice emanates from the barky mouth.

You apologize for not knowing the status of the tree, and he scoffs. You make your way to a branch to sit and rest as he begins speaking to you. At first, he only rants about the nature of living things and what life truly means. It isn't particularly interesting. Eventually though, he asks why you're here. You explain that you're only looking for your mother, who wandered into the Feywood to do some hunting.

"Hunting in the Feywood? Only Rangers may hunt here. Others who try will only find themselves lost amongst the trees." You ask if he might know where she wandered off to. "I do not know personally, but the Rangers would be able to find her, if they haven't already. However, finding them won't be easy either. They are somewhat secretive, I'm sure you know. You would need to cause a ripple in order to draw them out." He goes on to explain that a ripple is simply a disturbance in the natural balance of the wild. You think on this for a moment, and come up with some possible options.

A) Take down a few animals
B) Make noise and stir up a ruckus
C) Start a fire

After a few more words with the really rather boring talking tree, you decide that hunting may draw out the Rangers. You climb down from the tree as he rants incoherently about pine needles, and begin looking for tracks. The effort seems pointless, as everywhere you look there appear to be animals who are in no way afraid of your presence. You really aren't used to this sort of thing. Still, it makes the task easier. You notch an arrow and in no time have loosed all 5 into various creatures around the wood, including squirrels and birds. There doesn't appear to be any sign of a Ranger yet.

To this end, you use all the skills you've learned in your life to track down the biggest game around. In time, you find the stag from earlier. You stow your arrow and decide that this creature may not be important enough to draw the Rangers' attention, and you don't want to hurt more than you have to. It isn't for another hour or so that you stumble across bear tracks, and knowing that at this time they would be sleeping soundly and therefore much easier to kill, you decide that this might be your best option. You follow the tracks for a time until you come to a cave in the side of a hill. It seems to bend a few feet inside, but you can hear heavy breathing coming from within.

You draw your knife and slowly enter the cave in search of the inhabitants. As you enter, the light from outside grows dim, but you can still just make out the shape of the beast when it comes into view. It lies on the dirt floor of the cave, curled up and snoring. You make your way around it, but it seems to have tucked it's face into itself for warmth. It takes longer than you'd like to find it's neck, but you do, and after a moment of deep breathing and mental preparation, you plunge the blade into its artery. It rises almost immediately, thrashing and screeching. You run out of the cave as it stumbles after you. Back in the open, you spin around to watch as it emerges from the cave. You are taken aback when it rears up, and stands nearly ten feet above you. You heart then drops into your stomach, as you observe that the head on its shoulders is not that of a bear, but some sort of horrible bird of prey. Its front claws are long and sharp, and swipe at the air. Soon its eyes adjust to the blinding sunlight, and it spots you. It's front paws hit the floor and it screeches at you, then begins to charge.

You back-peddle and await it's charge. When it comes at you, you dive as far out of the way as you are able. You make a dash for the trees as it slips in the fresh snow, hoping to let the terrain fight for you. The beast tries to reach you with it's enormous arms, but you are nimble enough to avoid it's wrath by dodging around the trunks of the trees. You yourself seem to be tiring out faster than the monster, however. Even as fresh blood spray from it's severed vain, it does not lose the slightest bit of speed or power when chasing you. Eventually you are driven almost into a corner, after which point your only option is to try to stay on the opposite side of a thick tree, trying to catch your breath while still circling the trunk to keep your distance. This doesn't last as long as you'd like, as soon the tree itself begins to shake, and is uprooted out of the very ground in which it is planted. The beast has used it's terrible strength to make a path right to you. It tosses the thing away and lunges at you. You slip, fall, and just as the enormous beak is about to grab you, the beast is sent rolling sideways into another trunk. You see electricity discharging itself from the monster, and watch as it twitches involuntarily from the pain. A bolt of blue lightning emerges from the trees to your right, hitting the beast again. This one doesn't seem to affect it as much, as it is already up and after you again.

You evade the great swipes from the monster's claws, steeping back and ducking beneath them as they come. Once or twice it grazes you, cutting as efficiently as a razor. The lightning soon takes its toll though, and the monster falls over, weakened. You stop to catch your breath as it groans in pain, then look over to see someone emerging from the trees where the lightning had shot from. There you see a dark, slender woman in clothes much too ornate for this time of year, and this sort of place. She has a black cloak with a black and gold tunic and dark, transparent tights that are tucked into sandals. She also has gold bangles in her wrists, as well as a small glass orb, green in color and about the size of a large orange in her hands. The closer she gets, the weaker your knees become, and though there is a thought in the back of your head that begs you to take to your heels, you don't think you could even if you tried. She eventually stops a few feet short of you, just as you can feel your legs about to buckle.

"Do not worry, little man" you find yourself unable to place her accent, "I only helped out of the kindness of my heart. You prepare to climb down, but first ask him who he is and why he wants you to descend. He begins spinning the set of balls, making a whooshing sort of noise as he does. He explains that as a convicted criminal and missing pet, you are to be taken in and returned to your owner with all speed. He also mentions them needing to collar you so you won't run again. At this, you find that you have no choice but to resist. You make as if to climb down, but in secret, pull your knife from it's home. Then you fall and bring yourself along with the blade down on top of him. You hit the ground, and find that his size betrays his agility, as he has dodged out of the way of your attack. You get up quickly as he hurls the set of balls at you. They wrap around your left leg and weight you down, dragging in the snow. He then drops his sidebag and brandishes a knife of his own. You catch his arm as it comes in, and stab him in the shoulder. He cries out, and you go to stab again. This time however, you feel something yank the knife from your hand. You look around and see an arrow lying on the ground next to your knife a few yards away. When you look back up, you see that there are three new men in the trees. One of them has a bow drawn, and has already loaded another arrow. The other two merely watch in disdain. One, a bearded man with a black cloth wrapped around his head, steps forward and speaks.

"Enough. We tried to bring you in without violence but if you continue to press us we will brand you like the animal you are and drag you home. Get down on the ground this instant!"

You refuse, and try to explain to them everything that happened to you so far, and why you needed to what what you did. It's a long story, and you clearly see some of them tune you out in favor of the preconceived judgments. The bearded one, however, seems to be a bit more open to the explanation. He steps forward, unarmed, and while you don't stow your knife, you don't make any threats.

"If what you say is true, then we have more pressing matters to worry about than poaching in the Feywood. However, you were bought legally. And your mother is already on her way, escorted by two of our Rangers to the other side of the forest. Tell me, what would you have me do?"

You ask to see your mother at the very least, not giving up any information on potential plans you may enact once you're reunited. The bearded Ranger seems to think for a moment, before answering.

"Like it or not, you are property now, boy. You may think it unfair, but the laws of the Rangers have been in place for many hundreds of years. Furthermore, not even the Empire would shield you from us, especially not as a war brews. Still, I am not without a heart. I will command those escorting your mother to halt long enough for the two of you to meet one last time. However, I will only do this if you agree to be bound in the meantime. Furthermore, you must relinquish your weapons." You ask what proof he will give to assure they won't just take you in when you disarm yourself. "You have nothing to go on but my word as a Ranger. However given the circumstances, I don't believe you have many options available."

You let the knife fall to the snowy ground, and kick it a few feet away. The short man, still bleeding from the wound you gave him, goes over to his bag and pulls out a set of irons. He claps them around your wrists and bids you to follow. The weight on your leg is still there, making walking a bit difficult, but you do as you're asked. During the trip, you test your bonds. The chains hold strong, and you nearly a half foot of length between your wrists to work with. You think if you had some lubrication, you might just be able to slip out of them, but it would take time even so.

A while later, the group guiding you meets up with another pair of Rangers. They exchange words for a minute, too silent for you to hear, then the two newcomers dash off in another direction. When you ask what the meeting was about, the bearded Ranger explains that he gave the order for your mother to be brought back to the outpost to see you.

It isn't for another 45 minutes that you finally spot the outpost. It is a series of wooden rooms, like huts, build into the side of a grove of old trees. They hang from the sides of the trunks, and are full of men and women in green cloaks and leather armor. The group leading you brings you to a set of stairs, made from overgrown fungus that spirals up the side of one tree. They prod you until you climb, and eventually you come to one of the huts. You walk through a few more, through doorways that lead to branches carved into paths instead of true hallways. They keep pushing you until you come to a room with no alternate exit. It seems to have nothing but a few chairs. THey seat you in one, and tell you to wait. The bearded Ranger and short man leave, leaving you only with another Ranger in full armor, mask and hood. He leans against the wall disinterested.

You speak to the Ranger, calmly but firmly, trying to get him to respond. At first he doesn't say anything, but when you try to ask genuine questions about the Rangers he opens up more. Eventually you lead him to the topic of your status as a pet. You ask who sold you, and how.

"Hm. All living things are of equal importance in the grand scheme. A man is just as much an animal as a dog, or a cat. It is the duty of the Rangers to keep balance in all things, and so someone such as you, who sees to disrupt the natural order of the Feywood, is seen as no more than a rabid animal. We would have had you banished, but the witch saw you and asked to buy your debt instead. She offered quite a bit of gold, if I recall. The Headmaster saw fit to allow her to do so, and we don't usually question his judgment."

You prod a bit, adding a a little dash of insult to your line of questioning. The Ranger doesn't take kindly to it, but he keeps his composure. He explains that had the witch not bought your debt, and you ever set foot in the Feywood again, you would be killed on sight. He also says that while he does not personally agree with the concept of slavery, he does not see it as any different than selling a puppy. You take offense, but don't show it.

The Ranger tells you that the witch has lived here for a long time, at least before he was ever brought into the order as a babe. As the Rangers don't partake in magic, her mixtures are quite valuable to them in terms of curing magical ailments. The Ranger pay her for regular doses, and grant her freedom to do as she likes in the wood within reason. She is not, for instance, allowed to kill any more creatures than she needs to eat. She is also not allowed to mix poisons or disturb the ecosystem. As for why she took interest in buying you, the Ranger isn't sure. She has never to this point showed any interest in anyone as a person.

After hearing all this, you ask about the Rangers themselves.

"Eons ago, after the Starstorm brought about the death of dragons, after the First Men took over the world, and after the Silver kind banished the Golden kind to the reaches of the earth, the wilds of the world began to overflow with beasts of all shape and size. Without the dragons to keep the world in check with their awesome power, it fell to mortals to tame the wilds. Most did this by erected massive stone towers and cities, and shutting themselves off from the outside. There were some, however, who sought not division from the natural world, but unity. These were the first Rangers. They dedicated themselves to keeping the balance of the world, by understanding it and accepting it for what it truly was. Even now, we work to allow all creatures to live in harmony. We live in the Feywood, as well as mountains, deserts, and even rolling plains. It's not an easy task, but because of our efforts, disasters have been averted, and people and beasts can coexist. I myself was brought here when I wasn't even old enough to walk. Many of the Rangers were. They take in all homeless children from cities and towns, and raise them to be strong and swift, and to understand the world. When I became a man, they gave me the choice to become a true Ranger, or to find another place to call home. I chose to stay. Most due. As of now, I'm still at the bottom of the ladder. But someday I hope to rise in the ranks."

As he finishes his speech, you hear someone approaching from outside. When they enter, you see the bearded Ranger guiding your mother into the room. She too, is in irons, and they sit her down in a chair across from you. She seems upset by the events transpiring, but you can tell she is holding herself together as best she can. The Rangers both take a stand at the other side of the room.

The moment they leave, start working ourselves free. Those chains will serve as a decent enough weapon against these whoresons.
This? This is our start of darkness. And once we raze their order to the ground, we can get started on their allies. Our revenge shall be the stuff of legend. Naughty children across the breadth of the Empire will be threatened with the wrath of Dread Pirate Owain.

The Rangers leave the room, but still stand just outside the door. Still, you think keeping your voices low should suffice to exclude them from the conversation. You lean in to your mother and ask how she's taking the situation. She admits that, while at first she was worried, the Rangers didn't seem to wish her harm, which relaxed her. She asks about you, and you tell her about being sold. Her anger rises, but you tell her to remain calm for the time being. Together, the two of you begin putting together a plan to escape your bondage, and make it out of the Feywood together.
