>What even?
The bearded Ranger steps back into the room. Over his shoulder, you can see a familiar head of black hair and a gold circlet. You recognize your would be owner. The Ranger approaches and tells you that you've had enough time to talk. He asks your mother to stand up out of her seat, as her escorts are prepared to leave again. The witch waves smugly at you. You don't see her green orb in her hands, but must assume she has it somewhere. As the bearded ranger turns to guide your mother out of the room, you feel a brief moment of opportunity.

You rise from your seat and throw the length of chain available to you around the neck of the bearded Ranger. Pulling back as hard as you're able, you hear him cough and struggle for air. The other Ranger in the room, whom you had been speaking to only moments before, reflexively reaches for his sword, but does nothing to provoke you further. Your mother backs into the wall near you to avoid being grabbed herself, and the witch merely watches. The ball is in your hands now.

You threaten the Ranger, demanding to be freed immediately. He hesitates for a moment, but just as you seem to have grasped victory, you feel a sharp pain in your leg. You look down and see that your hostage has jabbed you with a shuriken, and from the numbness now filling your lower body, it would seem to have been tipped with something. You can feel your grip on his neck begin to loosen, and you are suddenly feeling a bit drowsy. You may not have much time to act.

You pull yourself and your hostage to the nearby window and with all the strength you have left, throw the both of you out into the trees. On the way down you fall into a branch, hurting your side quite a bit, but when the next two come up, you manage to redirect yourself and put the majority of the damage on your captive. When you finally hit the forest floor, the snow cushioning your fall slightly, your hostage is either unconscious or dead. You don't have time to determine which. You can already hear the Rangers clamoring to put together an effort to capture you again. The toxin in your leg is beginning to take it's toll, and you aren't sure you'll be able to stand for very long. You kneel down and grab what you can from the Ranger on the ground. You obtain 3 shuriken, which you honestly aren't sure you know how to use, a hunting knife much like your own, a sword, and a set of irons.

With little energy left in you, you decide that it's best to use what power you have remaining to find a place to lay low for the time being. You move quickly through the trees and eventually find a pile of leaves, likely pushed out of the way of the outpost by the rangers before winter set it. The pile itself is beneath a thin layer of snow, but with a bit of care you manage to slip in without making the pile seem conspicuous. You find a comfortable position there and watch as the Ranger spread out over the area to find you. Many of them seem to run right by the leaves, likely assuming that you'd try to run instead of hiding in plain sight. As you watch them work, you begin to feel your consciousness slipping away. The toxin warmth of the leaves doesn't help you stay awake, and now even when you try to make small motions to keep yourself alert, you find it harder and harder to fight the oncoming sleep. Finally, against your will, you black out.
>>
>>29466174
You regain awareness. You are chilly, and your throat is extremely dry. As the room around you comes into focus, you see that night has set in. You can hear nocturnal birds crying in the distance. The floor beneath you is wood, and creaks slightly when you move around. The walls also appear wooden, but not made of planks. It's as though they were carved from one solid, humungous log. You stand and find that you are no longer bound by chains, and your clothes have been swapped for some sort of burlap rags. Your feet are bare, and you don't seem to have any of the loot you acquired earlier.

There is a small window to your left, which is just too small for you to squeeze through. There is a door before you, with a faint orange glow peeking beneath the frame. Finally, there are shelves of odd bottles and jars all around.

You slowly push the door open, wary of the slightest creak. Luckily, the keeper of this home seems to keep things in good order. You look out into a large room, than seems to be carved into the body of an old tree. To your left is a large, bubbling pot over a low fire, and the witch from before, seated in a chair. Her back is to you as she rocks back and forth in the chair, and she doesn't seem to be aware of your presence. To your right is a locked chest, and a door that seems like it leads outside. The walls nearly all have shelves built into them, holding flasks, jars and bottles of all shapes and sizes. Most of them are empty, but there is a small crate full of bottles that contain deep red liquid inside.

"I spent good coin on you, boy. You're my familiar. You'll fill in for poor Mrs. Crumbs, who passed a way not two seasons ago. She was my cat you see, and I just couldn't bare to replace her with another, so I chose a different sort of pet. In the long term, I suppose you'll need to be trained and housebroken, not to mention groomed. As for right now, though, I've prepared your dinner and placed it in your dish right over there."

She points to a small, round table across the room. On it is a metal bowl and tin cup. The bowl has something written on the side.

"Your objection is noted, but I'm afraid there's no point struggling. You are mine, and you are my familiar. You have already been bound by blood, willing or not. Just look at your shoulder."

You do so, lifting up your burlap sleeve. There appears to be a bland and red brand, some sort of strange geometric pattern that has no meaning to you. You ask her what it means.

"It's your leash, so to speak. It's power is limited, but as long as you keep that arm you won't be able to go further than two miles away from wherever I am. I can also sense your presence, as well as your physical and mental state with it. I didn't want to have to use it, but clearly a hound as feral as you requires a choker to be trained properly." She rises from her chair, facing you. "Now two things can happen. You can be a good boy, eat your supper and go to bed so you have plenty of rest for tomorrow, or you can sleep in the yard with an empty stomach."

As you speak, you feel your body weight multiply. You are brought to your knees, face shoved into the wood floor. You bring your gaze up to the witch, and see that she now hold the green glass orb. It no longer glows faintly, but shines, projecting a dim green light all around it. The witch kneels down and shoves a finger in your face. "That's a naughty Mr. Fluffers. Very naughty. This hurts me more than it hurts you." You feel yourself dragged across the floor, and even as you try to grab for something to hold on, your body won't lend you your own strength. Eventually, the front door swings open and you are thrust out. The air is frigid and the ground is moist. The witch appears in the doorway, "Now you sleep out here and don't even think about coming in until breakfast." The door slams shut behind her, and you regain full control of your motor functions. Your first instinct is to ram the door, but some kind of wall prevents you from coming into contact with the tree that it is built into. You look around outside, and see little but miles of trees and snow. Your bare feet are already beginning to go numb.

>being this chaotic evil
Ever a tenacious young man, you set to work gathering materials for a fire. After two painstaking hours of gathering usable wood, tinder, and then starting the flame, you finally make yourself a torch that seems to hold a flame well. You march toward the tree/house, and look for a good place to start up the blaze. With no leaves, and most of the branches still moist with snow, you settle for the base. You squat there for some time, waiting for the tree to spark up. Eventually, though, you come to the conclusion that the wood must be too damp and swollen to burn properly. You take the torch away, and decide that it would serve better to make a campfire, rather than wait all night for this tree to burn. In the meantime, however, you decide to take a short walk around the area to see what you can find.

There are few animals around, due to the cold and dark. Those that are awake include only small creatures and the large birds hunting them. After a while, you feel something tug at your arm. It seems you hit the two mile mark you were told about. You struggle against it, but your arm simply won't come with you. After, you head back the way you came. You find little of use, and nothing at all to fill your stomach.

You use your torch to start up a small campfire. There isn't much wood left around that will burn properly, so you'll just have to hope that what you have will last until morning. You use rock to set up a small pit, and pile as many leaves as you can find to make a semi-soft bed. The night is cold and relentless, and a few times the wind finds its way through the trees and sends a terrible shiver up your back. You do manage to sleep, though, albeit uncomfortably.

You wake up, cold and shivering, and see the sun has already risen. You wipe your eyes and peer around. There is smoke rising from the witch's house, and there appear to be some other animals up and about. When you get to your feet, you find that your legs are nearly completely numb, and you must move around to get the blood flowing through your body again. As you are hopping around in the cold morning air, you hear the door to the house open. You turn around and see the witch. She looks as self-satisfied as ever.

"I hope you know I didn't sleep well at all knowing you were out in the cold. But I do what I do because I care about you, Mr. Fluffers. You can come inside and eat breakfast if you want, or you can stay out here and dig for worms. If you come inside though, you must promise to behave while we work today."

She turns away with a harumph, and shuts the door. You feel like you won the battle, but the war of attrition rages on. After warming yourself up, you decide to search the area for something to eat. All the noise and energy coming from the witch's house seems to have driven off the larger animals, even rabbits. At best, you might be able to catch field mice. There are, however, plenty of bugs and worms to be found in the dirt. You've never eaten a bug, but from what a friend told you once, they don't have a strong taste and are quite high in protein. After, you set them to roast on the remains of your campfire, and set to work catching field mice. you manage to get three after a few hours, and call it quits before the fire is completely useless. The meal is only ready sometime after the sun has already began to set, and the sky takes on the slightest orange glow. The mice have little meat on them, and smell foul. The mushrooms have puffed up, but you still aren't confident in them. Still, eating all of it together might just keep you fed for the next day or two. You hear the door behind you open again.

You shout over your shoulder as you hold the skewered mushrooms. She frowns, which gives you another sense of satisfaction. She slams the door again and you are left alone with your meal. After you find yourself unable to bring yourself to have another bite, and so you toss the remaining mushrooms into the fire. You eat the field mice, which don't fill you at all. The rest of the evening goes by quietly. You try to stoke your campfire, but you can find no suitable wood. You settle for piling more leaves and hope they keep you warm enough. You settle in and curl into a fetal position beneath the pile to keep every last bit of warmth you can.

Late in the night, you wake up. You are cold and numb, and you feel something straining your stomach. You crawl out of the leaf pile. You can feel your dinner trying to make it's way back up, and your stomach is in enough pain that you are about ready to scream.

You drag yourself a few feet away from your leaf pile and let your stomach empty itself of all contents. The process lasts a few seconds, but feels like it drags on for ages. Tears well up in your eyes as you heave and release bile and chunks of mouse and mushroom. By the end, your stomach is empty, and although it feels better, you are shivering and weak. You barely have the strength to make it back to your pile.

The next morning, before the sun, you find yourself awake and unable to return to sleep. You decide to rise and try hunting out of desperate need for food and warmth. You crawl out of the pile and warm up with light exercise. You then begin scouring the area you have available for anything you can use to hunt. There are several rocks, and you might be able to make a spear or knife if you work at it. The process won't be easy, or quick though.

You head back to your leaf pile and spend the majority of the morning putting together a crude stone knife. You only have time to sharpen a single edge by chipping the stone little by little, then grinding it against a larger stone. The witch comes out to offer you breakfast again, but you ignore her in favor of your work. You finish sometime after noon, and the result is a rather sad but hopefully usable knife. You practice its edge on your finger, and manage to draw a tiny bit of blood without too much trouble. You then dust yourself off and begin searching your available area for something to take down.

Two miles isn't as great an area as you first thought, and you find yourself constricted from reaching the thicker areas of the Feywood. Still, you do spy some rabbits here and there. You think if you work at it, you might be able to take some of the rabbits via attacks from the trees, but it will be a gamble. You decide that food takes priority over shelter for now, and begin using your bedding to start up a cookfire. It isn't easy, and you're well through half of the pile before the fire is anywhere near hot enough. Just as the fire is nearly ready, you dig through the leaf pile and hit something hard. Something that wasn't there before. You dig up the leaves and find a wooden bowl. In it are cold cuts of honey ham, and two boiled eggs. There is also a piece of toasted bread that has been cold long enough to become crunchy rather than crispy. You lift the bowl and see that the name 'Mr Fluffles' has been carved into the side, then scratched out. You look back up at the house, but do not see the witch.

You take the bowl, still full, and place it in front of the door to the house. You then go back to your rabbits and begin the slow cooking process. They are fully cooked by nightfall, and you eat them happily. You even eat some of the innards, if only to make sure you can last as long as possible. The rest you bury to make sure no other predators come sniffing around. With the rest of the night to yourself, you should probably spend the time you have being productive before bed.

it's simple
>>
>>29474805
>>29474954
With the time you have before the worst chill of the night sets in, you gather as many branches as you are able. They won't burn worth a damn, but they will serve to build a small shelter that hopefully will keep the wind off of you. You lean them against the thickest tree you can find, which isn't very thick at all, but with a little ingenuity you are able to craft a frame that will at least hold you when you curl up. You then pile on the remainder of your dry leaves, as well as some damp ones to make a wind-proof shield. Once all is settled, you look at a frankly unimpressive but manageable shelter. Unfortunately, it isn't anywhere near your fire pit. Though it's not as if you had anything left to burn anyway. You crawl into the thing, and curl up for warmth. You have trouble getting comfortable on the hard floor, but eventually your physical exhaustion beats out your sore back and you drift off.

The next morning, you rise after the sun and crawl out. Your back and shoulders are terribly stiff, and you're still pretty cold, but it's not as bad as previous nights. You begin to warm up, then see the door of the house open again. A quick motion, and a wooden bowl is set on the front step before the door shuts.

>>
>>29475941
>>29476123
You elect to ignore the bowl and its contents and instead set to work making more useful things to hunt with. With what you have available, you can weave a decent rope, maybe 20 feet if you spend the whole day working on it. Alternatively, you can turn your knife into a spear. Doing this will give you a little time after to hunt. Finally, you can set to work on a bow and arrows, but while this may be the best choice in the long term, it will take all of today and likely some of tomorrow to make a single arrow and bow from what you have available.

>>29476452
You set to work converting your knife into a hunting spear. Most of this process is sharpening the remaining edge of the stone to create a piercing point instead of a cutting edge. When you finally finish, it's near sundown. You have just enough time to gather two more rabbits. Thankfully, you aren't nearly as hungry as you were yesterday, but you still have little to no material to cook with. You sit and think as night rolls in. You've noticed that the witch burns something nearly every night, but you are unable to enter the house without her permission, and even if you were, she'd sense you. Your only option may be to climb to the tops of the trees, where the sun hits most often, and hope there are enough dried twigs to burn. When you look up to the sky, you see clouds beginning to roll in. It'll snow tonight, for certain. If you're going to use the twigs, today will be your only shot. Then again, there may be another choice.

A) Climb the trees
B) Burn as much of your shelter as you need
C) Hold off until after the snow
D) Other

You begin the long task of gathering miniscule amounts of fuel to burn for the night. Along the way, you suffer countless splinters, scrapes, bug bites, and are coated in sap by the time you finish. You do manage to eventually put together enough burnable wood for a new fire pit, though. You move the rocks and begin setting up the new pit. By the time everything is ready and the rabbits are cooking, you see the first flakes of snow begin to fall. It takes far longer than you like to fully cook the rabbits with the cold of the night countering the heat of the fire, and by the time they're done you find it hard to swallow through chattering teeth. You get them down and then curl up in your shelter to try and sleep. The night is brutal, and the weight of the snow begins pressuring your lean-to to the point that you must get up twice in the night to brush off the frost before the whole thing collapses. Near about one in the morning, judging by the light and moon, as you work to clear the snow from your roof, the front door of the house opens. You turn to see the witch, wrapped up in a fur coat and holding up a lantern. She shines it at you and frowns.

"Really now, are you so stubborn that you'd rather freeze than accept a hot bath and a warm bed, just because I put a little magic seal on your arm?"

You trudge through the snow and enter the house after her. As you pass through the doorway, the warmth of the house hits you, as if you had walked through an actual walls of heat. She shuts the door behind you and walks over to the trunk nearby. With a wave of her hand, the lock clicks open and she reaches in. From it she pulls your old clothes, including your boots, and wintercoat. She tosses them on the floor before you, folded neatly.

"I don't have your weapons, so don't ask. The Rangers took them before they handed you over to me. Now put them on and come sit down." She closes the trunk and the lock clicks again. She then hangs her coat on a hook nearby, and walks over to the next room. You don your old clothing, comfortable in their familiarity, but forgo the coat. The warmth in here will suffice. You then make your way to the next room and find the witch pouring two porcelain cups of green tea. You sit opposite her and look into your cup. It seems normal enough, and she sips it without hesitation. You take a sip as well, savoring the warmth as it fills your throat and stomach.

"I already told you why I chose you. With the loss of my previous familiar, Mrs Crumbly, I was thrown into a horrible depression. All my mixtures and tonics simply didn't have the same pizzazz I was so well known for. I tried looking for another familiar in the Feywood but it's so full of dull, average creatures like Owlbears and Thorins, and those dull Grecks. But when you wandered in, so cocksure and fierce, I had to have you! You're almost as feisty as Mrs Crumbly was in her youth. So full of life. As for treating you as a pet, I suppose I was just trying to fill the gap that was left. I prepared a warm little bed for you, and made you your own adorable bowl and even whipped up some darling outfits for you. But I suppose you'll just let them go to waste now, even after I worked so hard." She continues this way for a minute, as you sip more tea. When she finishes, you ask for more information on her specifically.

"Oh I'm not very interesting. My name is Helda. I'm a witch of course. I traded my ovaries for the magic, but it's quite alright because frankly I can't stand children. So sticky and loud. Speaking of which, you'll need a bath and a brushing tomorrow." You grimace into your teacup. After a moment, you tell her that while you won't agree to being her pet, you would be willing to obey her rules within reason, so long as you're stuck here with her. She smiles and claps her hands together daintily.

"There isn't much really. In the morning we do our limbering exercises, then have a light breakfast, then get to work on the brews we sell to the Rangers. At noon we have tea and toast, then sit in the kitchen while the morning boil simmers. In the afternoon we either cool the brew to pour, or add in the night ingredients. You move tot eh nearest shelf and begin opening books at random. Most of them seem like the insane scribblings or a lunatic, or at best an alien language made up of symbols you've never even imagined. One or two, however, will be written plainly and calmly enough that you can make them out. This still doesn't lend you much information, but it's good to know you aren't going mad. The simplest book to understand appears to be a beginners guide to the theories of magic. It begins by retelling the creation of the universe, including the Primordial Titans, the birth of Dragons, the Starstorm, etc. Then next chapter builds on this, explaining that all arcane magics are drawn from the cosmos. It's a bit difficult to wrap your head around, but it does seem that there are several types of mages. The most well known seems to be the witch or wizard, who according to the book, draw their powers from the universe as one draws water from a well. They measure, and cut pieces of reality that they tailor to their whim. Other include Sorcerers, who are born with magical ability and are almost always driven mad by it, and another unnamed set who make pacts with powerful creatures in exchange for power.

You skim the book for anything else that may be interesting, but your tired mind has a great deal of trouble retaining the information.

She says nothing, but points a finger at your bedroom and gives you a stern look. You try to explain that you were only curious, and even try to show some signs of concern but she doesn't fall for them. She only continues to look you dead in the eye and point back to your bed. Eventually you roll your eyes and follow her instruction. You crawl into bed and listen as she shuts her own door. Rather than risk angering her more, you decide to let yourself drift off to sleep.

The next morning you are awoken by stirring in the next room. You stand up and don your clothes, then head into the kitchen to see what's going on. Helda appears to be busy whipping something up at the stove, still in her nightgown. When she hears you enter, she turns and smiles, telling you to sit down while she finishes breakfast. Her disposition suggest she either does not remember the events of last night, or is electing to disregard them. At any rate you sit and wait patiently, until she comes over with a tray. She sets down two bowls of oatmeal and two cups of fruit juice. She sits across from you and stuffs a napkin into her collar. You look at your bowl. Mr Fluffles is scratched out on the side.
