Haha, just running a bit of a quest idea I had as a oneshot today! If the response is good enough I might extend it to a full quest, but that will only be if I finish PJ Witches or Cyberpunk Idols first! Anyways, time to get the standard stuff out of the way first:

"WAKE UP, ALICE, IT'S TIME TO GO TO SCHOOL!"

Your eyes snap open and you sit up from your bed, quickly scanning your room for that familiar, sickeningly high pitched voice. However, you see no traces of that fucking black cat. No tip of a swishing tail, or those golden glowing eyes, or even a pair of twitching ears poking out from the end of your bed. After all these years you're still not sure whether everything was just in your head, or if it was that little bastard cat's way of taunting you.

You check your clock and sigh. You've waken up way too early again, but you're in no mood to go back to sleep. Silently cursing your minor misfortune, you reluctantly get dressed. You've still got an hour before you had to worry about welcoming the fresh wave of new recruits, poor bastards, so wonder what to do in the meantime.

>Go to the armory. Playing around with gear always helped put your mind at ease.
>Go to the observation deck. At least the view never gets old.
>Go visit the Old Man. It's not like he ever goes to sleep, anyways.
>Go visit some old friends.

Also, when you say Magical Girl Hunter, do you mean we'll be hunting Magical Girls, possibly even stuffing them and mounting them on our walls? Because that would be rad.

You decide to go pay a visit to the Old Man. He always seemed to have a wise word to say, and always treated you nicely even though he had no reason to. As you walk through the halls of the installation, you pass by various personnel, both fellow Hunters and technicians. All of them give you a wide berth and a quick salute, though you know it was more out of apprehension and fear rather than any sort of respect. However, at this point, you've taught yourself to ignore it.

You arrive at a set of doors that stand apart from the rest. Instead of cold, metallic steel, the doors were made out of polished wood. The real stuff too, not the synthetic crap. You briefly wonder how the ell the Old Man managed to pull that off before refocusing your thoughts and hitting the buzzer on the side of the door.

"Who is it?" A soft spoken voice squeaks from the intercom.

"It's me, General, Alice." You say. "Can we... talk? It happened again."

"You know, you can just call me Trevor. No need for formalities at this point." The Old Man chuckles. "Hold on, I'll unlock the door."

The wooden doors slide open, and there sits General Trevor Bruttenholm, head of the Magical Girl Hunter Bureau. He certainly didn't look like a military man. Bruttenholm looked more at home in a university or library than behind an officer's desk. In fact, that had been his previous occupation before the War, but his expertise on Magical Girls pretty much made him the de facto choice to be head of the MGHB.

"Come now, take a seat." Bruttenholm says cheerfully. "Brandy?"

"Too early in the morning for that." You shake your head.

"Not in Moscow." Bruttenholm chuckles again. "Now, I assume Loki contacted you again?"

"I don't know... it just felt... REAL this time." You sigh. "Like he was literally right next to me, speaking in my ear."

"Yes, well, we never were quite able to understand the connection between magical girls and their companions." Bruttenholm nods sagely. "And we have even less data on what exactly happens when that connection is severed. You killed Loki shortly after the War began, didn't you?"

"Y-yeah." You nod. "At least, I'm pretty sure I did. You know what happened after that."

"Yes, your lost your powers after his death." Bruttenholm nods, staring out the window. "It could just be some sort of residual magic left behind after he died. We know that you still have some semblance of your former ability, however faint it might be."

"I don't know, sir. What if I screwed it up? What if Loki's still alive and out there somewhere?"

"Then we'll find him and hunt him, just like any other Magical Girl or Companion." Bruttenholm says sternly. "Just remember to keep these little incidents between the two of us, alright? The Council is already wary of keeping you alive, much less working for us."

"Yes sir." You nod.

"And don't you have a shipment of trainees to welcome?" Bruttenholm grins.

"I wish you didn't remind me of that." You sigh. "They always ask me stupid questions."

"Such is the nature of the uninformed." Bruttenhold responds. "That's where you come in though, isn't it?"

"I guess." You sigh.

"Now, go along then. Don't let me waste any more of your time."

You give Bruttenholm a quick salute before exiting his office.

You decide to swing by the armory. You always did find some comfort among the rows and rows of guns kept there. Hell, with Bruttenholm's blessing you even got first dibs on the cooler stuff.

"Yo, Heph, anything new come in from the shuttle?" You ask as you enter the armory.

"Well of course you're the first to swing by to ask." The station's armorer, Heph, rolls his eyes and grins. "Nothing too fancy. Just replacements for some of our older stock and even more of that useless tacticool shit. But we DID get something nice."

Heph ducks into the armory, opening several sets of secure doors before coming back out with a rather large rifle.

"Holy shit, Heph, what is that beast's name and when can I ask it out?" You gasp.

"Alice, meet Barret's newest baby, the XM800." Heph laughs, patting the weapon. "See how the barrel's a little thicker than normal? It's a coilgun so the whole barrel is basically a giant electromagnet, so it can shoot a .50 cal slug several times faster than any chemical powder can. Having to slap on a battery pack to power the magnets makes it pretty fucking heavy, but it shouldn't be any problem for you, right?"

"Hardly." You grin as you handle the rifle. One of the residual traces of your former magical abilities was that you were still slightly stronger and faster than the average human. On a bad day, you'd be at around Olympic levels of performance."

"This is fucking sweet, Heph. You think I can check it out for the next hunt?"

"Go for it. Barret wants combat data." Heph shrugs. "Say, don't you have to go meet the trainees."

"Fiiiiine, I guess I should actually act my age for once." You pout.

"A grown woman should not be making that expression." Heph sighs.

"Yeah well, I'll see you later, Heph." You give a wave before exiting the armory.

You sigh as you make your way to the hangar deck. You're not sure why Bruttenholm insists you welcome in every wave of fresh recruits. Most of the time you just end up scaring the piss out of them when you jokingly threaten to kill them with magical sparkles and they actually take you seriously. While it was funny the first couple of times, one of the trainees had actually managed to smuggle a firearm in and nearly shot you the face with it when he panicked.

Fucking rookies.

"You're late." The Hunter standing by the entrance to the hanger glowers.

"Oh come on, I know you don't enjoy these any more than I do, Leo." You shake your head. "Let's just get this over with."

You watch as the docked shuttle begins to disgorge its cargo. About fifty recruits in fresh fatigues and nervous looks on their faces. The hangar crew directs them over to you. Wanting to show some semblance of authority, you and Leo are standing on a catwalk slightly above the main hangar floor. The recruits shuffle in and then all of their eyes turn up to you. Judging from the looks, they heard the rumors. They always hear the rumors. This was going to be fucking wonderful.

"Okay, welcome to the Freedom Star, the orbital headquarters for the Magical Girl Hunter Bureau, blah blah blah. Let's just cut straight to the point and I'll answer whatever silly questions you have."

You're suddenly bombarded by a flurry of questions. Some just made you want to facepalm because it should've been shit they learned in boot camp.

>Explain the nature of Magical Girls and Companions to them.
>Explain the nature of Invaders.
>Clear up just exactly what you are and what you're capable of.
>Explain how Hunts are supposed to go.

"Okay, first things first, you people should have learned this shit in boot camp, but I'll humor you." You sigh. "Magical Girls first showed up about twenty years ago, at the same time the Invaders arrived. Magical Girls sort of explain themselves. They're girls, usually teenagers, granted magical and highly destructive powers from alien beings known as Companions. Companions normally take the form of small, sickeningly cute animals, and are fairly vulnerable. However, if you find one, that means there's at least one Magical Girl around to protect it."

"Magical Girls look just like any human girl, and are difficult to detect when untransformed." You continue. "However, one way to tell them apart is that they don't visibly age, so they can't stay in one place for more than a few years before people start getting suspicious.

"Invaders are a separate species of alien being that pretty much hate all living things, from what we've seen. They're not intelligent, and are completely biological. They're basically slightly organized, extremely feral animals that can rip tanks open like paper bags, depending how big they are. No idea where they come from, other than they try to enter the Earth via asteroid. They're not too much of a problem these days ever since ODIN was set up, but a few still slip past every year so we have to deal with them too from time to time.

"Now, while the world governments were still sitting with their thumbs on their asses, Magical Girls were actually going out of their way to fight off Invaders. People started worshiping Magical Girls as heroes, then Magical Girls decided to attack humans, and the rest is history." You finish.

With one smooth motion, you leap over the rail and onto the hanger floor. It's a lot less painful than it looks since gravity is weaker here, but there's no need to tell the rookies that. You then stomp towards Mr. Stupid Question of the Day, his fellow rookies quickly parting like the Red Sea to avoid your wrath. You just glare down at him. One of the perks to aging normally again was that you actually grew to be a bit taller than average, which made you more intimidating as a result.

"Are you saying I'm not cute right now?" You say with a bloodthirsty smile.

"I-um-well-" The rookie quakes in fear.

Well, no point in physically assaulting him. You didn't need more citations on your record. You then turn to the rest of the rookies.

"I want you all to get this into your skulls. Magical Girls are NOT cute or nice. They will kill the shit out of you if you threaten them or their Companion." You scowl. "Now, are there any more less stupid questions, or can we pack it up and call it a day?"

"Actually," One of the rookies, a bespectacled boy, steps forward, adjusting his glasses a bit. "Why exactly are you fighting on our side? Especially when so many other Magical Girls do not?"

"Well holy shit, an actual honest to god question." You blink and try to get a look at the rookie's nametag for future reference. "Well, Hickman, in my case, I guess I just didn't see the grand reason betraying everybody. I'm not sure what other Magical Girls' reasoning for their betrayal was, considering most of them aren't taken alive and the few that have been aren't in a talking mood. Our best guess is that they've been brainwashed by their Companions or grew too dependent on their magical powers to give it up."

"Well, that could have gone better." Leo sighs as you leave the hangar, letting the other officers guide the rookies to their quarters.

"Hey, at least none of them are getting sent back to Earth on a stretcher." You remark.

"The fact that you use that incident as a measuring stick for progress is not exactly helpful." Leo shakes his head.

"No pleasing you, huh?" You grin and punch Leo lightly on the shoulder. He had been a Hunter just about as long as you have, so you felt comfortable harassing him about all manner of things.

"You're implying I'm actually proud of my 'score.'" You grumble. "How long have we been hunting again?"

'Sorry, I just thought you'd want to know." Leo shrugs.

"Yeah, well, it's not like I keep count anyways." You lie. "What is it, 20? 30?"

"22 MGs and 2 Companions, not counting uh.. you know." Leo responds.

"Wonderful."

Suddenly, your cellphone beeps and you check the message.

>MISSION CONTROL, NOW
>-Bruttenholm

"Looks like we got a mission." You state.

"Yeah, I got the same message." Leo nods.

It looks like your chance to test the new Barret would come sooner than you thought. You and Leo both make your way to the Mission Control room. Bruttenholm and several senior Hunters were already there, staring at the massive, holographic globe in the center of the room.

"Our sensors just picked up two contacts." Bruttenholm explains, pointing to the colored dots on the globe. "An invader asteroid slipped past the ODIN defense network and landed in western Germany, near the French border. We've also been picking up M-Particle spikes in California, consistent with the presence of at least one or two Magical Girls in the area."

"California's weather is ALWAYS nice." Leo sighs. "Their seasons aren't measured by weather but whether half the state is on fire or not."

"No way, I'm not babysitting rookies on a Hunt." You shake your head. "It's a good way to get a lot of them killed."

"Your squad is not getting any bigger, Alice." Bruttenholm says sadly. "You may be keeping the attrition at bay but for how long? I'd hate to see you fighting alone again."

"I'll figure something out." You sigh. "Get Daedalus ready to launch. We'll be dropping in 30 minutes."

"I'll send the order through." Bruttenholm nods. "But please consider my words."

You just wave and leave Mission Control, heading back to the hangar. By this point, the rookies are long gone, and all that's left are the hangar crew, who are busy loading the Daedalus, your squad's orbital assault carrier.

"Sir, permission to participate in this mission."

You turn to see that rookie from before, Hickman, standing behind you, standing straight and saluting.

"Sorry Hickman, this is a no rookie flight." You frown. "Go bother another squadron leader if you want to die so bad."

"I've been told your squad's the best, and that's where I want to be." Hickman responds, not backing down. "I've ready read everything about you. You've literally written the book on how to hunt and take down Magical Girls. I won't settle being under the command of anybody else."

"You're serious about this, aren't you?" You raise an eyebrow.

"Extremely."

"Hmph. Might as well. Just don't get killed in a way that'll inconvenience me." You sigh. "Welcome aboard."

You see Hickman almost smile before he catches himself and salutes again before bounding off the the dropship.

"Whoa, our little Alice being nice to rookies? I thought you couldn't transform anymore." Leo crows.

"Shut it, Leo." You scowl. He was pretty much the only person you were willing to take MG jokes from, but only because he was competent enough to back up his talk. "Let's do this."

You board the Daedalus, walking into the troop bay and strapping yourself in. The rest of your Hunter squad likewise straps in, though Hickman takes a few more seconds to familiarize himself.

"Alright, everybody strapped in? We're launching!" The pilot announces. The ship shudders as the engines power on, pushing the orbital assault craft out of the hanger and into space.

From here, you could see the Freedom Star in its fully glory. Years before, it was built by the United States as a way to quickly deploy a Marine quick response force to any point on the globe within 90 minutes. After the Magical War, it was repurposed to be the MGHB's headquarters. After all, MGs and their Companions could turn up anywhere on the planet.

"Reentry in 3...2...1!"

The Daedalus shudders even harder as it finally hits Earth's atmosphere. However, you've gone through this procedure countless times before. Eventually, the shuddering stops.

"We'll be over the target site in thirty minutes." The pilot announces. "It's not safe to move around the cabin."

Your squad disengages their safety restraints and start milling around the cabin.

"We should get the mission details sorted out." Leo says.

"Mhm, you totally should." You say.

"Come on, can you please take this seriously?" Leo sighs.

"I'll think about it."

"Fine, we might as well get the mission details sorted out." You roll your eyes. "What have we got?"

"Well," Leo checks the cabin's main screen. "looks like the spikes were detected outside Los Angeles, in a large set of suburbs."

"Yeah, sounds like MGs in hiding." You nod. It was common for MGs to hide out in urban areas in well developed nations. Their ability to manipulate peoples' memories meant they could insert themselves into a regular household and live pretty well for themselves for a couple years before having to move on. Also made them hard as hell to find.

"I suppose we've got local support?"

"LAPD is being mobilized." Leo nods. "They're setting up roadblocks as we speak."

"Good. Let them know to stay the fuck away. They're not equipped to handle MGs."

"It's still a lot of ground to cover." Leo frowns. "About a six kilometer radius. That's hundreds of thousands of people to sort through."

"I suppose we do this by the book." You sigh. "We'll sweep house by house."

"Lets a lot of ground to cover." Leo frowns.

"Well, we could always deploy the Stalkers." One of your squaddies suggests.

"Roy, you know that Stalkers are bad for PR." Leo frowns. "They always scare the fuck out of everybody. At least guys with guns are somewhat familiar."

"Hey, just a suggestion." Roy shrug.

Late in the war, people began to notice that Invaders and Companions seemed to have some sort of odd relationship with each other. Invaders seemed to be attracted to Companions, and were always drawn to areas with high level of magic. Companions by themselves were pretty defenseless and used Magical Girls to defeat Invaders for them. Some enterprising scientists had managed to engineer organisms with Invader DNA that were rather effective in sniffing out MGs.

The only problem was that it was horrible for PR. Nobody liked the things running around in their neighborhood, even though there had never been a single fatality associated with them. Sure, a few maulings, but those people had it coming.

Actually, this is a better idea. Also, tap into all the local media and broadcast our message.

"Hello, this is Alice. You know who I am. I used to be a magical girl, like you. We know you are here. We don't need to hurt anyone else. Just come out of hiding and out into the open, and nobody needs to be hurt. We don't need to fight, we can just talk"

The point is that this is a free action. If it works, then good for us. If it doesn't then we know this is a smart one and it'll negate some of the PR the bad command is fond of. American appreciate honesty.

>>29476822
Doing this because you might as well take the chance to resolve this peacefully, as impossible as it is. That impossible hope drives us in our darks actions. Plenty of time for police action, why not at least try to talk.
>>
>>29476864
We were there at the start of the war, remember? We used to be a magical girl. If there is anyone better qualified to expound on who is and isn't at fault, I'd like to meet them.

It's probably true enough to a first approximation; we were there. If they were all sparkles and shit, we'd know something was hinky.
>>29476892

"Deploy the Stalkers." You say. "No need to make this harder on ourselves."

"Got it." Leo nods and rushes to the rear of the cabin.

Meanwhile, you grab a microphone to key the ship's intercom and begin broadcasting a message.

"ATTENTION, THIS THE MGHB. WE ARE CURRENTLY INVESTIGATING THE AREA FOR SUSPECTED MAGICAL GIRLS. STAY WITHIN YOUR HOMES AND DO NO LEAVE UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, AND YOU WILL NOT BE HURT."

Satisfied, you set the message on loop and turn back to Leo.

"What's the M-Particle density?"

"3%." Leo shakes his head. "It's been five years since the War and the air is still full of that shit."

"Yeah, makes tracking MGs in hiding a pain." You sigh. "Keep an eye for any spikes."

At that moment, the Daedalus drops a large metallic crate with a loud CLANG onto the street below. The crate's electronic locks disengage and a half dozen Stalkers emerge from it, skittering and scuttling about. You can hear screams and shouts as the civilians get what is probably their first look at a Stalker. However, they've been bred to ignore normal humans unless attacked, and they merely scuttle past in their search for magic.

"The Stalkers are moving out. Damn,t hey must be hungry" Leo whistles. "Based on their movements, we've already narrowed the search radius to one kilometer."

The Daedalus keeps pace with the Stalkers' advance. Soon, the Stalkers narrow down the search to a single block.

"All right." You say, as the Daedalus' ramp begins to lower. "You know the drill. Sweep each house and if it's clean, evac the residents. If you encounter a transformed MG DO NOT engage her on your own! You got that?"

"Yes, sir!"

"We'll be splitting up into two teams for this. Team 1 sweeps in from the north and Team 2 from the south. We'll squeeze em out."

With that, Leo and the rest of your squad begin to rappel down from the Daedalus to the ground below.

I'm amazed that the general set up isn't raising red flags considering what happens in stories with heroines who are 100% loyal fighting machines for their side: Sooner or later they find out that their side isn't as anywhere as great as they believed, usually right after said side tries to kill them.

You hang back in the Daedalus. It's easier to coordinate in the carrier plus you could always act as a fast reserve. Plus civvies were one of the few things you detested more than rookies. Rookies at least had the good sense to fear you. Civvies in most cases were just entitled bastards.

You stand in the Daedalus' command suite, keeping a close eye on your squad's status as well as every surveillance feed you can get. Sooner or later that MG was going to make a mistake and blow her cover.

You blink when you see something flash by on one of the surveillance screens. You narrow your eyes and take a closer look. But there's no mistaking it.

It was Joanna.

Jesus, when was the last time you've seen her? Definitely from before the War started. If you remember correctly, she had one of those freaking overpowered "shadow control" powers, or something like that.

You see that she's managed to hide herself in a group of evacuees. Clever girl, but not clever enough. Even if she did get past the roadblocks she'd never get past the Stalkers. You see the girl approach one of the police blockades.

"All teams, I've spotted an MG. Putting her position on the map. Get your asses there ASAP."

>Tell the police not to let her through. It'll buy you enough time to get there.

Sometimes, the few must perish so that the many may survive.

Cops are there to sign traffic tickets.
>>
>>29478107
We'll tell them only if they give it a rubber stamp. We need to know where the familiar is. If it's disguised as a stuffed animal, tell them to let it through. Just bring it out where we can see it.
>>
>>29478122
How does that refute the "soldiers are people too" thing? They knew the risks, that they would be sent into danger, but their lives must still be balanced against possible civilian casualties. It isn't an excuse to throw their lives away.
>>
>>29477913
what are the odds that the stalkers might accidently attack civilians, if she is hiding with them?
>>
>>29477913
"Roadblock two four, this is Hunter One, you have a possible MG moving through your roadblock. DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT engage her. We're moving in take her out. Just let her through and we'll take care of the rest." You say in your radio.

"Roger that, Hunter One."

By this point, the Daedalus has gotten within visual range of the target area. Shoulder your new rifle, you hit the door release and lean out. The range wasn't ideal, but one of the quickest and easiest ways to take out an MG was when she was untransformed. That meant taking her by surprise, which was usually accomplished by extreme range. However, if you missed, that would tip her off and she'd either transform or run. Either way, it would make your job a lot harder.

You hold off on your shot for a few seconds so the Daedalus can catch up. However, the orbital carrier is not exactly a very silent or low observable craft, so you guess you shouldn't be surprised when you see Joanna turn around to see the approaching craft and her eyes widen in a mixture of fear and apprehension.

You're not quite sure if she saw you or not, but that question was academic at this point anyways.

You pull the trigger and feel the rifle buck in your shoulder.

You see a blue flash and suddenly Joanna's out of the line of fire, causing your bullet to hit empty pavement. At this point the surround civilians realize what's going and begin to flee in every direction. The nearby cops pull their guns and yell at the girls to surrender. As if that's going to do anything.

"Motherfucker!" You curse. You weren't expecting TWO MGs so close together."

Joanna then transforms into her MG form. With two Magical Girls at full power, the Stalkers are drawn to the area like moths to a flame. They most likely weren't going to last too long, but they would serve as a distraction.

"Two active MGs!" You yell in your radio." All units be warned! Load up the big guns and prepare for combat!"

Fortunately, Joanna wasn't skilled at ranged combat and this new MG seemed to be relying on swords. You weren't in too much danger, but you had to keep these girls pinned until backup arrived.

You take aim with your rifle again. You had a handle on Joanna's powers and fighting style. As long as you engaged her in a place that didn't have a lot of dynamic lighting, or in complete darkness, she'd have no shadows to manipulate against you. The second MG, you've never seen before. Other than the swords you've got little else of what she's capable of.

You bullet zips through the air again. This time, Joanna is vaguely aware of a ranged threat, and puts up a Magic Circle. It was basically a magically powered shield, the basic form of protection for all magical girls. Their strength usually varied from girl to girl, but generally they pretty much stopped all small arms, with the more powerful MGs being able to shrug off all the but the heaviest of weaponry.

Thankfully, Joanna's magic circle wasn't THAT powerful. The bullet stops in midair for a brief second as the magic circle tries to stop it, but the entire thing shatters like glass the bullet continues on its way, hitting Joanna in the chest and literally blowing her part into pieces.

A part of you felt a pang of guilt. Nobody really deserved to be gunned down like that, not even a Magical Girl. However, another part of you felt grim satisfaction at one more named crossed off the list. Joanna chose her lot in life, just like you did.

You see the other MG turn and scream when she sees that Joanna just got turned into paint on the sidewalk. She then glares at you, or more accurately, the Daedalus. She slashes at the remaining Stalkers, turning them into fleshy ribbons and dashes off. She was goddamn fast.

"Go!" You yell at the pilot. The Daedalus' engines roar to catch up.

"All teams, one MG down and the other is on the run. Team 1 will continue pursuit while Team 2 handles cleanup."

"Roger that." You hear Leo affirm. "Continuing pursuit."

(cont)
>>
>>29479849
You raise your rifle again to try and get another shot, but this MG was playing it smart, sticking to cover so you couldn't get a clear line of sight. You see Leo's jeep screech into view and plowing through wood fences and yards to try and keep up with her. You could have Daedalus start to open up with its autocannons, but in a crowded residential area like this, collateral damage was highly likely.

Or, you could drop down and cut off the MG. You were fairly sure you could slow her down for a few seconds without dying horribly.

Well, sorta sure.

The Daedalus' autocannon roars as it spits bullets at the MG creating a wall of fire in front of her. The gunner is careful not to hit any houses or anything, and focuses on an empty street, cutting the MG off and forcing her to stop, but you can see a LOT of cars get shredded apart and explode.

Bruttenholm was NOT going to be happy about this.

Leo's team finally catches up and they roll in, their jeep spitting heavy machine gun fire at the MG, with a number of rounds bouncing off her Circle. You see the MG take a look at both the oncoming jeep and the Daedalus, as if she's trying to make a decision.

She then bends her knees and leaps straight into the air, a lot higher than you though she could.

And she's headed straight for the Daedalus.

"Motherfucker." You curse again.

Crazy Ivan originates with the Soviet submarine service, and referred to making a ninety-degree slew to get a clear look with passive sonar to their aft, which is normally obscured by their own prop noise. Since this maneuver dropped their speed to almost nothing, if there was another submarine following them closely enough to hide in the prop watch, there would almost certainly be a collision. Hence the name 'Crazy Ivan'- you had to be crazy to risk it.

You see the sword fly out at you, and you move to try and dodge it. The sword sails through the door and into the main cabin, where it embeds itself into the opposite wall.

At this point you throw your sniper rifle the side and draw your sidearm, a Desert Eagle. Usually, you kept it around since its heavier punch made it better against Circles, but now that this MG's Circle was down, it was actually a bit of overkill. The MG grimaces, aware that she was in for a world of trouble now that her attack had failed.

In another quest thats how we went from hiring prostitutes to buying a mercenary company

And Merc has said he is likely to continue this idea once one of his other quests finishes, most likely PJ Witches, or at least once it goes on long hiatus

"You're the Traitor. The Enemy of Justice" The MG spits. "Joanna told me about you."

"I'm sure she has." You say grimly as you raise your pistol.

Three shots. Center mass. Quick and clean. You see the MG's eyes darken as the life leaves from her body. She drops like a stone, leaving her sword stuck in the Daedalus' side as she plummets to the ground with a loud, bone crunching SPLAT.

"Second MG bagged. Let's clean it up, boys." You say. "And remember to find and recover their transforming elements. Can't afford to let some hobo pick them up."

Transforming elements were basically the items that allowed MGs to transform. They usually took the form of innocuous personal effects, like lipstick containers or compacts. They usually had residual magic in them which necessitated them being confiscated and quarantined back in the Freedom Star, in the Trophy Room.

You recover the two swords left behind by the sword wielding MG when it hits you that you never actually learned her name. Not her real one or her "magical" one. You feel a pang of remorse, but quickly try to force it down. This was the fate you chose, after all. You had to see it through to the end.

You decide to go down and handle the cleanup in person. You never did like having to get debriefed by Bruttenholm. He always scolds you like a naughty schoolgirl after a Hunt. The Daedalus lands in a nearby parking lot and yo make your way to the temporary command post your squad has set up. The local police are being helpful in cordoning off everything in a hundred meter radius, so you have space to work.

There, inside a biohazard tent, lie the bodies of the two MGs you terminated. Joanna is just... a complete mess. Her upper torso is literally gone, leaving just her arms, head, and lower half of her body. You lean down over Joanna's severed head under the semblance of getting a closer look, however you whisper to your deceased comrade so that nobody could hear you.

"Sorry, Joanna."

You then zip up the bodybag and proceed to the second MG. She was more intact besides the hole in her chest where her heart was, though her limbs and neck were bent in odd angles due to the fall. You see several lab techs taking hair and blood samples for DNA testing as well as taking fingerprints. She'd have to be identified, so you could at the very least put a name in the report.

"Good job, bagging two in one day." Leo says, standing next to you. "You think there's a Companion around?"

"Possibly. But it'll be long gone by now." You sigh. "Though it can't get far without tripping the sniffers, so it'll probably hole up somewhere else in the city until the heat dies down."

"Sounds like our job here isn't quite done yet." Leo sighs.

"Yeah, well, that's something for the locals to handle. We'll be returning to the Freedom Star once we patch the holes in the Daedalus."

"Got it." Leo nods.

>>
>>29481270
Murderface was all about dulling the emotional pain with drugs and alcohol, though.
>>
>>29481223
She tried to kill us, and died for it. There's no rational guilt to be had over killing traitors who threaten the whole world.

Remember, we're the only MG who switched sides. Everyone else decided to become magical terrorists, and they routinely threaten the average person with horrible death. If they want to surrender to us, it better be with hands up, magic weapons put away, and not after they slice up a bunch of our assets and leap hundreds of feet in the air to try and put a sword through our faces.

I can't believe the people who wanted to 'spare' this one. Because she was 'new'? This 'new girl' would have killed us immediately, killed our whole squad, and killed again until someone else put her down.

Fuck Magical Girls.

"By the way, is the rookie still alive?" You ask.

"He is." Leo grins. "Didn't get hurt and didn't panic. Pretty good shot with an heavy machine gun, too."

"Good. Guess he's not such a big liability after all." You nod. "Did you get the TEs?"

"Yeah, we did." Leo hands you two sealed evidence bags. "Looks like some kind of pendant and a portable mirror."

"I see. I'll handle those." You say, taking the bags. "If that's all I'll be headed back to the Daedalus again. I need to file the report."

"Roger that." Leo nods. "We'll pack things up once the lab techs are done."

With that, you quickly make your way back to the Daedalus. Since you're a squad leader, you've actually got your own small, private quarters on the ship. You punch in the door code, enter the room, and toss the bags on your desk before sitting in your chair and taking a deep breath.

You open a drawer and take out a picture. It's an old one. Very old. It's one that you've never shown to anybody, and honestly, you're not sure why you haven't thrown the damn thing away yet.

"You can't throw away your past that easily, Kaleidoscope. It'll always be a part of you." You hear a maddeningly familiar voice say.

You whip around in your chair, your eyes darting back and forth to find the source of the voice, but you see nothing. In fact, you're not sure if you actually heard anything at all just now.

Calming down, you take another look at the picture, and Joanna's necklace.

You try hard. You really do. However, you realize tears are dripping onto your desk, meaning that you've started crying again.

"No no no, I thought I was past this." You grumble, furiously rubbing at your eyes to stem the flow of tears.

Sure, there were a lot of MGs you killed without feeling TOO sorry for, but those were mostly MGs you didn't really know all that well, if at all. It was easy to justify to yourself why you killed them.

But Joanna... she was different. You two fought together, bled together, hell, actually did a LOT of things together. And she was just... GONE. No more sleepovers gossiping out which boy to ask out, no more of her godly pasta cooking skills, no more...

No more Joanna.

It was a good thing you had a private office to square yourself away when these things happened. You kind of suspect Leo might know, but you're not too sure. He at least hasn't said anything about it.

Having regained control of your emotional state, you dig into another drawer and pull out two shot glasses and a bottle of brandy. You fill up both glasses and take one of them for yourself.

"To you, Jo. Wherever you are now." You say quietly before downing the shot.

"Alice? This is Leo. We're packed up and Daedalus is patched. We're ready to go. What are your orders?" Leo asks over the radio.

"We're leaving." You say, trying to inject some strength into your voice to hide the fact that you had been crying. "Let's drop our cargo off and get resupplied. We've still got a lot of Hunts ahead of us."

line of questioning, could it be possible to include base management? Like Who to choose on missions, what to build, what to research? Which hot spots to respond to and which countries to prioritize?
>>
>>29481608
I want to know if you'll be enforcing other missions besides MG-cide. I'm under the impression Alice's group also deals with invaders as well as MGs
>>
>>29481747
>could it be possible to include base management? Like Who to choose on missions, what to build, what to research?
I don't think we're that high in the food chain...

>Which hot spots to respond to and which countries to prioritize?
Also not that high in the food chain.. But it would seem that we could at least pick our mission based of this thread.
>>
>>29481774
To add on that, I mean, there's a general on the space station so really doubt it. If anything we got control over our team.
>>
>>29481747
Alice is a squad leader, not a base commander

Eg: the tactical girl
Or for xcom, the 'one you play as' when fighting xebo scum
>>

You mean, the one that consistently comes back alive

Yeah, the fucker that's maxed level and didn't stick his neck out enough to have it blown away.

Also, all the luck.

Book Deckard was kinda cheerful as fuck, on the way to work he thought about have as long as he did something exceptional (decommissioning 8 robots in day) he would be able to buy a GOAT. It is only at the end, when he has proven himself to be the best that he been broken
>>
>>29481649
>How old is Alice?
Alice first contracted when she was 14, so at this point in the timeline she's 22.

>What were the circumstances of her contracting? Did she have a wish granted or something?
She just did it because she thought it would be cool.

>>29481681
>What's Alice's position within the organization? How powerful is she individually? How much influence does she have within the organization?
She's a squad leader, so she's pretty much got a lot of authority within the Bureau since squad leads are given a lot of autonomy to operate. Only Bruttenholm has the power to directly command her, but the other squadron leaders are not obligated to follower her orders since they're equal rank.

>Also some background on the Magical Girls war would be awesome. Which version of MGs are you using?
The short version is that basically, one day, literally almost every magical girl just up and rebelled against humanity. Nobody is quite sure why they did it, though they suspect it was something motivated by the Companions. The war was relatively short, lasting for only 2 years, but it was pretty brutal, and a lot of places ended up getting pretty trashed. MGs eventually lost the normals and pretty much went into hiding.

As far as what kind of MGs they are, they're pretty much conventional MGs. They have varying powers but die when they are killed.

>>29481707
Unfortunately no. They all bit the dust.
>>
>>29481843

Stalkers would attack alice, wouldnt they?

Since they are trained to go after MGs.

I know we are not a commander or base commander, but I'm assuming we're damn influential. I'm just saying it would be fun to do some in between missions.

Also, I remember my worse mission. Near the end game and made a bad turn. Loss three colonels at once. And it was ironman

Alice's residual magic isn't enough to get the Stalkers' interest. Even disguised magical girls put out more magical energy than she does in her current state.

I'll be honest, it never translates well into quest for me. It becomes a chore to do and I would rather just say 'hey, can we get some new 'fuck-off' guns, thanks!' then leave it at that.

I'm also recalling how VC went with this... it was always a mess.

Is there ever a "A Sergeant in motion outranks a Lieutenant who doesn't know what's going on." moment, or does it happen all the time? Or not?

>>29481912
Sorry, I really like kitting out my soldiers before battle. But I guess it doesn't always work for quests. But I really like the XCOM one-shot I once saw. Did the strategic management really well.

What was Alice's power before she became an EX-MG? Was it something ironic like empathy?
>>
>>29481936
>So what exactly are the circumstances behind Alice's defection?
She simply didn't agree with her Companion.

>Is there ever a "A Sergeant in motion outranks a Lieutenant who doesn't know what's going on." moment, or does it happen all the time? Or not?
Of course! Leo actually used to fulfill this role when Alice first started out.

>>29482038
>What was Alice's power before she became an EX-MG? Was it something ironic like empathy?
She was a close range fighter type, as evidenced by the pic of her MG form.

On what? Turning against humanity?

If so, why didn't more magical girls refuse as well? I doubt many were pleased at the prospect of massacring innocents.

>>29482138
Magical items lose their properties when the MG that used them dies. By all accounts they're mundane items, but the Bureau keeps them in storage, just in case.

That makes me wonder what her companion said to her as the exact details were never revealed.

>>
>>29482382
I hope its as simple as the MG's companions just got a switch flipped in their heads and are under the invaders control, and the MG got brainwashed into going with it

I'm not a fan of the shamalamalam stupid level "NO YOU WERE THE DEMONS" reversal
>>
>>29482382
>>29482434
I suspect it was partially provoked by the government and possibly trying to weaponize MGs to their own ends. Governments aren't generally crazy about outside forces doing a better job than them in dealing with say an alien invasion.

Though I can't rule out the companions being a different sort of alien or that their possibly unusual logic being a factor. As far as convincing the MG in question: well if a young girl had a bunch of angry military types to deal with, odds are the cute harmless looking ally would seem more reasonable.
>>
>>29482274
>>29482470
Although that brings up the good question how did Alice get recruited into the Bureau, and what was Alice's initial reason for joining?

>>
>>29482508
She probably saw her friends murdering innocents for their bullshit 'cause' and wanted to put an end to it.
>>
>>29482508
they might have found her right after she killed Loki and as for reason? Perhaps someone being convincing that or an offer of mercy as she was a MG at the time and if she was dealing with someone piloted by anon, she'd be dead.
>>
>>29482557

>>

sorry merc, just had to
>>
>>29482607
Just pointing out how powerful a tool mercy is in such a setting. That and swordwitch only really started attacking after we tried to snipe Joanna.
>>
>>29482647
She had no mercy for us, and obviously no mercy for humanity, given that she made the choices she made.

Some people need killing.
>>
>>29482689
Even though it likely justifies the possible bullshit the companions are feeding the MGs?
>>
>>29482689
Not the same person here. We did the right thing, the rational thing.

But I guess being an ex-MG is lonely, and somehow saving another MG, no matter how impossible, would be a miracle in itself.
>>
>>29482762
This is recursive logic, and it never favors the terrorist in the end.

>Terrorist attacks innocent people that have nothing to do with their grievance
>Claims justice
>Is removed
>fellow terrorists get mad, recruit uneducated down on their luck people
>kill more innocent people, claim justice

Alice made a choice that apparently exceedingly few could bring themselves to make. They killed innocents. If they didn't want to be viewed with intense suspicion, hatred, and fear, then they wouldn't have betrayed humanity.
>>
>>29482837
You're acting as if nothing pushed them into it or that they all did as opposed to most of them. Who to say they didn't end up seeing normal people in such a way before their "Betrayal"?
>>
>>29482868
Ah, so you're saying that their only choice was to then start mass murdering innocents so nobody would view them with suspicion, hatred, and fear?
>>
>>29482907
Between people who practically didn't see them as human and their closest ally, who do you think a young girl would trust?

The fact that few prisoners don't talk is enough of a sign that they do not trust normals.

and all that was said was "turn on humanity" in those exact words, where do you get slaughtering of mass innocents from? That and I was under the impression that their first target was the invaders.

Futhermore, what does it say about people more concerned about doing what amounts to a mopping up than ensure more lives aren't lost to invaders?
>>
>>29482980
>Futhermore, what does it say about people more concerned about doing what amounts to a mopping up than ensure more lives aren't lost to invaders?
It says nothing, we had the chance to do just that, we chose to chase the MGs.

The butthurt shadowruns are strong with this one.
>>
>>29482980
They explicitly betrayed mankind and initiated a war that devastated vast swaths of the planet. While we were already facing a potential extinction level event. You're ignoring things the QM actually wrote to make your argument that maybe the MGs are the real victims here.

If anything, Alice is proof that they had a choice, and very few chose to side with mankind.
>>
>>29483046
You're acting like they did so purely for the evilulz and to justify your rampant murderhobo fantasies.

That and unless the root is understood, the same thing will happen again sooner or later or are you going to propose genocide as a solution? That's the end result of shooting very MG we see no matter what they might be thinking.
>>
>>29483095
>"People started worshiping Magical Girls as heroes, then Magical Girls decided to attack humans, and the rest is history." You finish.

alice at least believes they shot first. if they REALLY did or not we can argue until the cows come home. but if they DO attack civvies then it is not them vs the government. it's them vs the rest of humanity.
>>
>>29483095
If they didn't want to become the villains of the world, then they should not have acted like villains. They probably have a body count that would make dictators throughout history BLUSH if they saw numbers that high.

You're imagining that it's possible the humans 'provoked' the MGs because you're asshurt that we killed sword waifu instead of saving her with our healing tits.
>>
>>29483134
Alice isn't the best example as she killed her Companion before he could really shed light on things on what likely is a knee jerk reaction.

>>29483150
Merc isn't hte sort of writer to have something there just for the evulz and other one dimensional evils.
>>
>>29483177
Loki: So check it, shit's going down, and you need to kill people who oppose us.
Alice: that could be a lot of people.
Loki: Eh. They had it coming.
>>
>>29483177
The other companions 'shed light' to the other MGs, who were collectively being worshiped. They then turned on those faithful masses and started a devastating war.

Alice made the right call.
