>Fucking finally
The birds and animals outside chirp and squeak as they go about their business of survival. The chilly air seeps in from the outdoors, but the constant burning fie beneath the great black pot seems sufficient in warming at least this room against the cold. You find yourself watching as Helda pours several powdered ingredients into a pot of bubbling water. At least, it looks like water. Perhaps a tad too blue. After liberal stirring, she adds in a few dried leaves and some small black seeds, almost like that of a poppy. You take mental notes of all that she does for a good while. Eventually she puts a lid on the pot and asks you to stoke the flames. You do, prodding them and adding a few more sticks to the pit. When you finish, she asks you to head over to the shelf and add in two dried Red Heartflower petals, "And don't take your eye off the pot for a moment! If it boils over the whole house will go up," and runs out the front door to get something from outside. You walk over to the shelf in question and look at the bottles. You find three different types of dried petal, but none of them are labelled, and worse none of them look familiar.

The first bottle contains petals that appear quite large, and have yellowish tips. The second has petals that look much like a roses, only perfectly round. The final bottle contains petals that look more pink than red, but do indeed seem to be shaped like little hearts.

You turn your back to the shelf and watch the black pot as it simmers. You stifle a chuckle as you prepare to watch the pot burn out of control. A minute or so passes, however, and nothing interesting seems to happen. Eventually, Helda reenters the house and walks over to the pot, humming as she opens the lid and drops in a smooth white stone. She takes a large whiff of the mixture, and then her gentle smile turns into a frown. She closes the lid and glares at you.

You ignore Helda's call and continue working on your bow. She continues to call, and even comes out to speak to you, but you only stay quiet and diligently work. By sundown, the bow is nearly done, and you have 5 arrow shafts. You feel your stomach growl slightly, but know that there is still a great deal of work to be done before you're finished. You recall that yous spear is still inside your lean-to, but if you were to hunt now you wouldn't be eating until late at night.

You stand up and dust the snow from your pants before reaching into your shelter and pulling out your homemade spear. It still seems to be in perfect working order, much to your delight. You head off into the forest, using every inch of available space you have to try to find food. You search late into the night, as the moon rises overhead. Unfortunately, the snow makes for poor footing to chase down animals, and the trees aren't close enough together to simply run through. By around ten o'clock, you have nothing to show for all your effort, but the work had certainly built up a hunger. You head back to your shelter, but as you walk you notice a few flakes of snow beginning to fall. You pick up the pace, hoping to get back before things get out of hand.

You arrive at your lean-to to find that the weight of snow on it has collapsed it completely. Thankfully your tools are intact, albeit buried beneath a few inches of powder.

You give a simple sorry, just lightly dipped in sarcasm. If she notices she doesn't let on, instead resting the large wooden rod she uses to stir on the side of the pot and walking over to you. She wraps her arms around you and smiles. Its very awkward. After she invites you over to observe the pot. You peer in, seeing nothing really new. She begins explaining the basics of alchemy, most of which goes over your head. You do manage to retain some facts though. According to her, potion making starts with a base made from water and Dragonroot, a rare plant which acts as a conductor of magical energy. After boiling overnight, the resulting broth can be made into nearly any potion imaginable. The current mixture is meant to be medical tonics that heal flesh and bone when poured.

You begin to ask questions about other types of arcane magic. At first she reviews what you already know from the book you skimmed last night. Then she opens up the topic a bit. You learn that Pyromancy is considered an ancient and dead art form, but in its time was considered a beautiful and multifaceted practice. She talks about elementalists in general, and explains that the majority of them have always been sorcerers, but the few true practitioners who utilized elemental magic often had to find a source in order to learn to channel it. It is said that eating the heart of a dragon gives one its mighty breath, and that certain natural wonders can open one's mind up to elemental magic. Finally, she explains that although elements are complex, they are generally fit into the categories of fire, water, wind and earth.

You ask about the elements of magic. Helda lets out a frustrated sigh, but does commence to explain. The only place she knows that might provide a source of fire is a fiery mountain far to the west, past the Republic. The best place for a source of water is to the north, in the frozen sea. The best place to learn of wind if probably the plateau to the northwest, near the white plains. All three places are quite far and quite dangerous. It seems that elemental magic is a task to gain in itself.

Eventually you conclude that fighting her decision is only wasting time better used sleeping if not to read. When she sees you have quit your position, she smiles and walks to her room, telling you to sit on your bed and wait for her. When you ask why, you get no response.A few minutes later, as you strip off your boots and overclothes, she enters holding a soft bristled hairbrush. The very sight of it puts the hairs on your neck on end. Despite your dislike of the scenario, however, you did agree to allow her the act in exchange for your education. You begin with the very first page and make sure to take in every word to the best of your ability. As you read, Helda sits across from you playing with a length of yarn that she twists into shapes with her fingers. You ignore her for the most part, and focus on the text. You slowly come to understand the fundamental philosophies and concepts of magic. The more you read, the more clear it seems to become. You read to voraciously that you get all the way to the end of the book within a couple of hours. The final few pages detail a training exorcise for apprentice mages in order to rehearse the somatic components, as well as sensations that come with learning magic.

A) Try the exorcises
B) Move to the next book

You follow the instructions outlined in the final few pages of the book. The forms it gives are a bit hard to get from the description alone, but you work something out. You repeat the motions over and over, trying to get them down perfectly. Once you have them down, you move on the the next step of the exercise. The book shows three minor alterations to the motion that will channel magic energy into a very simple spell. With the time you have left before Helda forces you to sit through another brushing, you will only be able to get one down perfectly.

A) Learn the spell 'Candle'
B) Learn the spell 'Chalk'
C) Learn the spell 'Reach'

Back guys. They all sound like useful cantrips - we should try to learn them all as soon as possible. Also welcome to the newcomer - always nice to have a new member.

You repeat the modified motions outlined in the book until you get them right. The final time, you feel for the magical energy around you as instructed, and when you perform the ignition, a motion that releases built up energy, in this case a simple snap of the fingers, a small light comes into existence. The light is only as bright as that of a candle, as the name might suggest, but is white and illuminates more clearly than fire. It hovers above your thumb, and you find you can manipulate it as if it were a ball, rolling it around your hands. It comes to a rest in your palm, and you look into it. Despite not giving off any actual warmth, it generates a sense of comfort in you. Holding it feels almost like holding a baby in your arms. You almost want to cradle it against you.

You hear Helda clap quietly, and turn to see her smiling wide as she observes the small ball of light. "Oh look at it! It's so cute!" You smile and go back to playing with your spell. You toss it around some more, and eventually learn that you can set it in place, hovering in the air wherever you leave it. Soon however, Helda tells you that it's time to sleep.

A) Keep the spell lit

You put out the spell and head to your room, stripping down and waiting for Helda. She comes in dressed in her nightgown and bearing the brush that is your torment. You sit through another brushing as Helda hums some kind of song, all while trying to focus on memorizing the motions of your new spell. Eventually Helda finishes and tucks you into bed, against your protest. The embarrassing nature of your agreement almost makes the reward not worth it, but you stay strong. Before falling asleep, you practice casting Candle and putting it out a few more times. Finally, you close your eyes and dream of a sea of stars.

Wrapping it up. Sorry to end so early guys, I have a busy week. But hey, at least you finally made some progress, despite Tiger.

Sh, Tiger I love you

There might not be a thread tomorrow, sad to say. The day after, however, there will surely be one, and then probably every night after until we finish.

Love you all, thank you for playing.

Reminder: We have to learn Hold or Dominate Person and then put her through this shit.

Hah! My wanton paranoia keeps everyone in check. I'm actually kinda proud of that.
Yeah, yeah, love you too, man.
Get some rest, Rags. You've more than earned it.
