You are Pilot officer Julian Reber, a Swiss national who violated his country's constitution in order to join the Royal Air Force and fight off the alien menace currently swarming the Earth. No one actually cares that you're technically doing something illegal, but you like your bad boy mercenary fantasies.

You graduated from Cranwell less than a week ago and so far, you've done some watch patrols, shot up a submarine and saved an RAF squadron from being crushed by Destroyer-class BETA.

The thing with the submarine landed you a private debriefing in a dimly-lit concrete box. The tea tastes like hot water and the MI-5 agent interviewing you most certainly does not fit the sexy spy stereotype, but seeing as how you haven't been shot in the back of the head to appease some foreign government, you can't complain.

The woman sitting in front of you looks old enough to be your grandmother, at least. Throughout the debriefing, she has shown no emotion. For over 5 hours she bombarded you with questions and demanded clarifications in the best BBC English you've ever heard and you were happy to oblige. You've just finished recounting your heroic, TSF-wrecking charge against the Destroyers and now comes the really important part.

"Pilot officer Reber, you've destroyed an unknown submarine in British waters and possibly committed an act of war against a foreign country. Do you have anything to say in your defense?"

> No country will ever claim that submarine.
> It was self-defense.
> It's not my fault I had to fix the Royal Navy's mess.

"Ma'am, my flight recorder will clearly show that I did not fire a single round of ammunition until after my TSF's missile lock warning was triggered. In addition, no country in their right mind would ever claim that submarine."

The woman's face forms something that vaguely resembles a smile.

"So you aren't just another pilot. Good."
The woman deliberately removes three manila envelopes from her briefcase and lays them out on the table before sliding the middle envelope towards you.

"Pilot officer Reber, you will be happy to know that your promotion will proceed as scheduled. An F-5R ADV Tornado is waiting for you at Liverpool. Unfortunately, it is required for one more naval patrol. Pilot officer Owens will be accompanying you for this mission."

She pauses for a moment to let you remove the envelope's contents. There are the standard order forms you were expecting, along with a flight plan for a mid-range naval patrol.

The photograph that falls out - a blonde-haired youth wearing sunglasses - is less standard.

"Should you encounter weapon smugglers ferrying four MiG-21 Balalaikas, or human smugglers or human smugglers holding a certain British citizen who resembles the man in that picture, the Crown would be extremely grateful if you could deal with them at your *discretion*."

These are probably the least subtle black ops orders anyone has ever been given.

You can roughly guess that the BETA attack was a diversion to extract a high-value target and that MI-5 wants it back badly. Two Tornadoes against four Balalaikas isn't bad odds and you could always use more gratitude. The only question is why this mission is being given to you and Owens.

"I don't particularly mind, but why me? You must have other pilots capable of pulling this off."

The woman takes a moment to ponder how much she can afford to tell you and how much she needs to hold back. People who live by their secrets and lies waste so much time keeping it all sorted out.

"With your current security clearance, the only reason you are allowed to hear is that I need a pilot who could plausibly be assigned to a standard patrol. A pilot officer meets that criteria. However, because I would like to develop a long-term relationship with you, I will also tell you that I have no desire to explain to another agent that a Russian submarine destroyed the HMS Royal Ark and that a Russian spetsnaz team took one of our top engineers and his exceedingly valuable military research."

You immediately realized how incredibly screwed you are. You might have been able to walk away from this clean before, but now that you know the Russians almost started World War 3, there's no way MI-5 can just let you go. You're their new errand boy whether you like it or not.

"If you require additional persuasion, I can also inform you that one of these other envelopes contains an choice assignment to Dover base, while the other contains an assignment to a joint patrol task with the Royal Navy in Ireland. I'm certain you can use your time there to reconsider our arrangement. Unfortunately, the RAF can't afford to spare any Tornadoes to hunt down illegal fishing boats, so I'm afraid your new TSF wouldn't accompany you."

So it's a choice between going to Dover and doing the job you signed up for or getting shelved until MI-5 needs you for a job. They're asking you politely now, but it's just a matter of time before they decide to give you orders.

>I understand completely, ma'am. It'll be my pleasure to take that Tornado to Dover.
>I don't have time for your games. Do your worst.

You stand up and give the woman a crisp salute.

"I understand completely, ma'am. It'll be my pleasure to take that Tornado to Dover."

"Good."

The woman slides the right envelope your way and stuffs the other in her briefcase.

"Your plane to Liverpool will be leaving immediately. If you stay on schedule, you will have one hour to intercept any illegal ships before they are out of your reach. Good luck, Pilot officer."

The woman leaves while you grab your next orders. The moment you leave the room, a full security team surrounds you and escorts you to the base's runways. RAF Marham mostly sees TSFs, but it also has space for small planes to transport VIPs. One such plane is waiting for you.

It's a light craft that can't carry more than a dozen passengers, but it'll get you where you're going fast enough.

You board the plane and see Owens sitting in the front, just as the spook promised.

He gives you a light wave of his hand. He definitely looks like he's seen better days.

"Hey, Reber."

You sit down close to Owens and the plane starts moving. It won't be a long ride, but you've got some time to kill.

You casually pull the file out of the envelope and strike up a conversation with Owens.

"So, Owens, you look bloody awful."

He tries to chuckle, but it's obviously forced.

"Yeah... this isn't what I signed up for, you know? I wanted to kill BETA, but this isn't what I was trained for."

"If it makes you feel any better, killing BETA isn't like what we were trained for either."

Owens doesn't laugh that off either.

"Yeah, that's what I figured. Still... if I'm going to be taking risks like this, I want to have the skills to get through, you know? So I decided to apply to Cranwell. That woman from MI5 offered to help me get in."

You smile and give Owens a pat on the back.

"Good choice, Owens. The college isn't easy, but it trains the best TSF pilots in the world."

"Yeah, thanks."

Owens leans back and starts relaxing.

Meanwhile, you take a look at your orders. They're still unofficial, so there's a liberal amount of black ink all over the pages, but you can get the gist off it.

Project Round Table is apparently Great Britain's great plan for a counterattack. It's a small surge of elite troops with above-average potential and all the funding and resources the European Union can provide. They're currently slated for second priority for the upcoming Typhoons, but that's not so bad. Giving the new equipment to an established unit like Cerberus makes perfect sense and at second priority, you'll only have to wait a few more months before you can finally get inside a real 3rd generation TSF.

>Owens has learned Gunnery and TSF Piloting

The rest of the flight is uneventful and you take a quick nap until the landing starts.

The wheels on the landing gear haven't even stopped spinning when a full security team boards the plane and rushes both you and Owens to a motorcade. You burn every single red light and stop sign on your way to the port, where two Tornadoes are waiting for you on a cheap barge. You're surprised no one crashed into a building along the way.

You quickly change into your fortified suit as the barge speeds off a lot faster than it should be able to.

You board your brand new Tornado and connect your suit to the controls. According to the GPS data, you've got between 30 and 45 minutes before you intercept the Russians. It's not much, but you can get some work done on the software.

You decide to reprogram the safeties a bit to give yourself more manoeuvrability. You're not looking forward to bringing your brand new Tornado back for repairs after its first flight, but you really like dodging enemy fire.

Your work ends just as a boat comes into visual range. You can clearly see four piles of crates large enough to cover TSFs on the deck and there aren't supposed to be any boats on this lane.

"Red Flag 4, this is Red Flag 2. Looks like we have our target."

"Red Flag 2, this is Red Flag 4. Standing by for combat."

You move to hail the ship and order it to stop when the crates all fall apart to reveal four Balalaikas. The Russians must have welded a bunch of metal panels together to make them look like piles of crates.

Without warning, the Balalaikas activate their engines and launch towards you. They dip down as they fall of the edge of their improvised carriers, but they have enough thrust to barely stay above the water.

They must be really desperate to cover the boat's getaway.

>Hail the Balalaikas as a formality.
>Those TSFs are illegal anyway. Meet them over the water.

You've ceded the initiative, but fortunately for you, your finger is close enough to the trigger to dodge and counterattack.

Your boat takes some damage from the lead TSF, who deftly flies away from your counterattack. It won't sink immediately, but it can't take too many more hits and you'll need to repair it before you even think about going back to port. Fortunately, the Russians have provided you with a perfectly functional boat, assuming it survives the fight. But that's something you'll have to worry about later.

Bullets strike your TSF and Owen's, but your HUD doesn't display any damage. You've lost paint, maybe some armour, but you're still in the fight.

The enemy TSFs are less lucky. Two of them take direct hits to the cockpit and go down in the water.

The fight is even.

Your previous dodge gave you some altitude and while your flight isn't steady, it's more than enough to close in on the lead TSF. You and Owens both have a simultaneous flash of inspiration and switch your 120mm ammo to explosive rounds. Your shots hit the lead Balalaika and penetrate its fuel tanks for less than a second before the TSF explodes catastrophically. There is a very brief shower of incandescent metal slag, followed by fog as the sea begins to boil.

Unfortunately, the second TSF scores a direct hit on your left arm, causing it to fall right off. Still, you have one weapon and Owens is still close to 100%. You can finish this.

You're not too worried about the VIP's safety. Considering the Russians almost started a goddamn war against the EU to get him in the first place, they're not going to kill him now. It's more likely the spetsnaz team's going to commit suicide and someone else will try again later. Still, you need to secure the VIP.

"Red Flag 4, this is Red Flag 2. We're taking that boat. I'll clear it on foot while you stand watch."
"Red Flag 2, this is Red Flag 4. Understood."

The Russian boat isn't going all that fast - in fact, it isn't moving at all anymore - and you both quickly catch up to it and settle down where the Balalaikas were. According to your infrared sensors, which thankfully survived the battle, there are six heat signatures on the bridge. The rest of the boat is completely empty.

You check your sidearm and disembark. It's been a while since you've done grunt work, but you remember the basics.

You move quickly, sticking close to the walls and staying behind cover as much as you can, careful not to leave yourself any blind spots.

You're halfway to the bridge when you start to hear the screams.

"WHERE IS SHE?"

You run towards the bridge at full speed.

"I KNOW YOU TOOK HER! YOU KNOW WHO I AM! THAT MEANS YOU'RE CLEARED TO KNOW WHERE SHE IS!"

You abandoned all attempts at stealth and RUN.

"WHERE IS MY LADY?"

You finally reach the door and an absolutely disgusting stench fills your nostrils. You need to struggle to keep from vomiting, but you make it to the door and level your guns at the Russians.

"WHERE IS MY LADY?"

The carcasses of two horrifically disfigured Russians hang from the ceiling.

"ANSWER ME!"

Two more Russians are bound and gagged to a chair. It looks like they had their eyelids cut off.

"WHERE IS SHE?"

The last spetsnaz is about to have an underwater welding torch driven into his eyeball.

By your VIP.

Please say we don't have to work with this nutjob.
>>
>>29522981
I see. They didn't scramble their TSFs in order to attack us, they were just trying to escape from THIS guy.

>>Try to talk him down and prevent the situation from escalating.

The rest of the ship is clear. These are the only ones left. If he thinks these guys can tell him what he wants to know, they're certainly not going to be able to do it while dead.

That said, if this current mission is even tangentially connected to this suspected abduction, there might be a little something in the Russians' ship's computer if SOMEONE were able to take a peek around.
>>
whatever else we do we should offer to take a look at there computers and see if we can find anything. making ourselves useful to this guy would make him less likely to try and kill us.

You holster your sidearm and enter the bridge, calling out to the VIP.

"Hey, HEY!"

The VIP startles for a moment and turns to face you. He doesn't seem to care that you're there all that much.

"Who are you? Don't interrupt me. I need to find her!"

"LISTEN to me! I'm Pilot officer Julian Reber of the RAF. MI5 asked me to bring you back. I can bring you home and help you find your lady, but you need to calm down. I can get into this boat's computer and figure out what they know. I'm sure they have some valuable information. Just start by telling me your name."

The man shuts off the welding torch and goes limp. He looks at you like you're a complete fucking idiot. He raises one arm to point at the Tornadoes outside and speaks in a lifeless monotone voice.

"My name is Dodger. I wrote the OS for those TSFs on a napkin. During my coffee break. You think you can get more out of these computers than I can? Go ahead."

He sinks down against one of the walls and breaks into sobs. You keep one eye on him and get to the boat's computers.

Anyone want to bet that his "lady" is a TSF?
>>
>>29523428
possibly, by using my keen powers of observation i have deduced he may not be that sane.
>>
>>29523399
The boat, as it turns out, is a massive operational security risk. Navigation charts? Check. Russian codes? Check. A list of Russian assets? Check. Cipher codes? Check. Safehouses? Check. Stolen data from EU TSF research? Check.

This isn't just a boat, it's probably the KGB's central hub in England. It's incredibly stupid to set something like this up, but the data has to be managed somehow. MI5 will blow its load once it gets its hands on this thing.

However, there doesn't seem to be any information on Dodger's mysterious lady. The poor man just keeps sobbing and going on about how "She was perfect" and "It was fate that she would be created." You can't get anything else out of him.

The rest of the mission is a simple cleanup. The Royal Navy and MI5 send someone over to haul the Russians back to port. You're assigned a new Tornado, as yours is too damaged and there's a combat operation waiting for you the minute you reach Dover. You part ways with Owens for the moment, but you're confident you'll see him on the front lines in a few months.

Your promotion to Flying officer comes through on schedule.

The first thing you see as your truck reaches Dover is the castle is the massive construction yard that will soon become the Round Table. The TSF hangars have already been constructed and you can see the Tornadoes moving about. The machines are all the best Britain has to offer.

The truck rolls to a stop and you step out. In your immaculate service dress, you salute your new commanding officer.

"Flying officer Julian Reber," he says. "Welcome to the Round Table."

Did we need to roll a 20 to find out where the lady TSF is?
>>
>>29523737
It is indeed supposed to be the F-5E. The R's a typo.
>>
>>29523817

Question, if we got a 20 would we have found his "lady"?
>>
>>29523817
>- Sean Bean survived (BONUS: 1XP)

I feel like I missed something here, huh?
>>
>>29523870
Mr. Beans?
>>
>>29523836
No, the data was just not there. Dodger's lady is far too important for a section chief to know that she even exists, much less where she is.
>>
>>29523842
Yesss. The F-5E ADV is the only TSF I love more than the F-15E Strike Eagle.
>>
>>29523885

So what would a 20 have gotten?
>>
>>29523885
Ahhh. Thanks anon.

How good is the plane in real life?
>>

The Round Table's CO is based on Sean Bean. Sean Bean is most famous for dying in everything he does. Therefore, keeping him alive in Muv Luv, regardless of how little screen time he has, is actually worth bonus XP.

This is the IRON MAN HARD MODE.

You can assume he'll get the most suicidal engagement in any fight.

In any case, good night, folks.

Sean Bean plays Richard Sharpe, and survives the entire series.

That movie was fucking amazing just for the back and forth between those two. Also:

>I hurt someone's feelings once
Best line in the move. I have used it dozens of times for several characters.
