>Since Mountain Bandit QM is busy running other things, I'll be taking control of it until he either retcons my shit and starts running it again, or the takeover takes permanent effect.

Thinking of no better alternative than speaking the truth, which has served its use as a persuasion tool, you begin your pitch of sorts to the group of deserters that you ran into in the woods.

"I was a local from a village near these parts. You wouldn't know it, it doesn't exist anymore. The nobles that lead your army to ruin? They're no better at maintaining their domains than they are at defending them, and they showed as much when they torched my village. Heck, they're showing it now, letting every scumbag subhuman wretch run amok among the hamlets and villages." You notice some of the soldiers nodding silently.

"I'm now my own man. When they slacken their grips on their riches, I yank them out of their hands. When they're off getting good men killed in losing battles, I try to do what I can to stave off bandits. I'm no hero, but I'm no monster either. I need men more than ever, and I can offer a share in the spoils beyond what you were ever offered in the military. Do you want in?"

The Sergeant of the motley band of deserters considers your proposal. Stella regards them apprehensively, ready to burst into action at a moment's notice. "How rich are these riches of yours?"

"We were given a weekly stipend of 1 silver. I'm not fighting for something less than double that!" Shouts one of the soldiers.

"Well, -I'm- not fighting for anything less than.." He starts to count his fingers. "...Uh, four times that!" You're fortunate his ring finger was severed.

"Quiet damn it!" The sergeant barks out. "Lemme do the negotiating!"

>It seems these fellows are going to demand weekly pay. How much are you willing to offer?
>Alternatively, do you wish to persuade them to join some other way?
>>

double would be 2 silver, per man, per week, and we could throw in extra share of loot from raiding the nobles or any others we decide to steal from, they'd also get a safe location to live in

You face the leader of the group. "I will offer you a weekly stipend of 2 silvers. And you will get your share in any loot that you've participated in acquiring." Stella blinks, looking sideways askance at you. What is it now..? "Does that sound reasonable?" The Sergeant looks at you for a long moment, then to Stella for just long enough to begin to enrage you, then back to you. "Some of us want to settle down as well. Those who do will want to get married."

"Is double bigger than four times?" Asks the soldier with four fingers, and you happen to notice a strip of cloth unwrapping itself under his helmet.

"Ephidel, we need to talk." Stella pulls you by the shoulder, and out of earshot from the rest of the group. What does she want..? "You have the best timing when you want to talk about the relationship."

"Shove it." She hisses. "You want to give them weekly payments? What about our other 'brothers', will you start paying them as well?" She has a point; the rest of the band will probably resent the preferential treatment. A group of strangers looking to marry single women from your group won't help placate discontentment either.

What do you tell Stella?
>Keep the stipend to the new soldiers. If so, what do you reason with her with?
>Make it so the rest of the band gets a weekly payment.

>>Make it so the rest of the band gets a weekly payment.
but make it so they have to be helping out, on watch duty, building/gathering/farming etc, they must be doing work to get the pay, for these soldiers, for the men back at our hamlet, they work, they contribute, and they get paid, if they take part in raids, they get a share of that raids loot, if they don't go on raids, then they don't have claim on the loot except what we give out

and with that, its 2:30am in my part of the world, and I'm off to sleep, good luck OP, I hope more players find this

"Yes." Stella blinks again. "But they won't stay idle and get paid either. If they want to get paid, they'll have to work for it during daytime, whether they're on guard duty, farming, lumbering, whatever."

"You realize we'll have to work harder to get richer this way?" Stella's expression softens somewhat. "We were lucky so far, that we pulled off stunts that sound like bad tavern tales. You won't be able to keep everyone alive sometimes." Your stomach turns a little at the prospect. "I know that."

Her expression brightens up ever so faintly. "I'll also present my demands concerning whatever jewelry we end up looting in the future. You don't object, I hope?" Well, it's hardly a new demand. "Haven't we been doing that already?". You laugh as he punches your shoulder.

"Are you two done fucking yet?" The Sergeant yells out. You must've laughed louder than you thought. "Yes, we're done fucking!" You reply, eliciting another, harder punch from Stella. "We agree to pay you two silver a week, and share in the loot. If you want wives, I'll let you know I'm not forcing anyone to get married, and I'm not forcing anyone not to either. Just know some of these girls have been through some shit. Your name, serrah?"

The man raises his meaty hand to shake yours. "Call me Yohann." You struggle to keep your neutral smile as he clamps down on your own hand. "Ephidel."

After some cajoling from the rest of the group, all soldiers end up agreeing to your terms, and you begin your march back to your camp. "So, what are our plans, Commander Ephidel? Besides not getting killed, that is." Yohann asks, walking the side opposite of Stella. You don't remember hinting you'd want him to do as much...

"First of all, no 'commander' shit. You call yourselves brothers, and we do the same." A good 17 men walk behind you, experienced and reasonably armed and armored all. Altogether, they have enough supplies on their backpacks to last them half a month, although you don't know how willing they will be to share if it comes to that.

"That said, you joined us at a good time. We were facing a shortage of supplies, and we arranged for a meeting with the elders from the surrounding villages to fix that."

Yohann's brow wrinkles at that. "So what, you want us to pay your grain for you? Try to get a bargain, is that it?"

"The best of bargains, actually." Yohann looks queerly at you. "We're going to 'persuade' them to let go of their grain for free. Due to the shortage, they've been selling their surplus at very high prices. And we need that money for other things, like paying your stipends."

You walk along silently for some time. Are these people deserters with a moral compass or something..? Finally, Yohann nods. "Alright. But this better not end up becoming a butchery." He seems to be stuck on the free man mentality, if he can just place conditions like that...

"Of course not."

You make your way back to the ambush spot. No one in sight, good. "It's safe to come out. No weapons drawn." Your (other) men emerge, looking cautiously at the group. "These men are to become our brothers. Welcome them, and treat them as you treat each other."

Zawadel approaches you, sizing Yohann up. "Battle of Crow's Peak?" Yohann shakes his head. "No, we were marching out to lay siege to Grunwalder Castle at that time. Imagine how that went." Zawadel grimaces. "I don't have to. Welcome on board." The two shake their hands, clamping down on each other like a vice grip. The display seems to go well with the men from both groups, who quietly begin to shake hands and breaking the ice with jokes and small talk.

"They're getting along fine." Stella remarks. That they are.

She looks around the camp, appraising the work. "This can work. There's enough room for the new soldiers to hide in. All we need to do now is keep any outsiders away, wait for the elders to come by and hope for the best." She concludes.

The rest of the evening passes without incident. You present your new stipend plan, to a collective of pleased gasps and cheers. You make do with what food you brought, and soon it is night time. You can see the light of a great fire from the direction of your village; Sarius' plan to burn the hides and attract their attention seemed sound.

Stella, sitting and eating by your side of the bonfire, rests her head on your shoulder, inviting you to embrace her. "We should sleep close to our loot tonight. We don't know if they won't try to run off with it and 'settle down with their bitches' instead of staying by our side if they discover it." You wrap your arm around her, pulling her close. "Right you are."

>What preparations for the night do you make?
>>
>>29557128
Thats perfectly alright. I will be leaving in an hour for about 4 hours, just so you know.

Set our most trusted guards to guard the loot, in shifts. (If the loot is unguarded anyway, if it is it really should be guarded) Also improve or start work on a basic palisade, -read pit and crude sharped logs surrounding camp- should only take a few hours to construct if everyone helps. Make this a nightly ritual to protect against night raids.
>>
>>29557256
>clarification, this is our ambush spot for the elders. They're planned to arrive here for a "meeting in 2 days", as explained in the archive link in the OP

>>
>>29557429
You give a look around the camp. It's going to be a tight fit, now that you've got so many new people. In fact, why didn't you remember to make up for the newcomers when you arrived...? Oh well, what's done is done.

You stand up. "Alright. Newcomers, you're going to be our guests for the night. Your older brothers will be in charge of patrolling the camp." A suppressed cheer comes out from the group. "But. You're going to have to make do with what sleeping spots we arranged for the night." This last bit is not taken so well. "Easy for you to say! You've got a woman!" Stella rolls her eyes.

"We'll be both rotating shifts tonight." You state, but the damage is already done. Whatever good will there was after the initial meeting is undone, as the men begin to complain quietly and not so quietly. "You heard the man, stop crying." Yohann intervenes. "Did you think we'd take turns with the woman over there tonight or something?" Stella mumbles something about never forgetting her facecloth again. "If Ephidel wants us to sleep like a stuffed sausage, we'll sleep like a stuffed sausage."

"It's not like it'll be a regular occurrence." He glances at you, with a look that's not so much seeking reassurance, as one making a statement. "Of course it won't." You say.

The men obey your instructions, and either sleep or attempt to in uncomfortably tight spots, or set out to patrol in the night. As it happens, your night's rest with Stella is remarkably more chaste than you had planned, as two of your lads are flanking you in your tent. "They're snoring." She complains. "I know." You reply. "We'll take the next shift, as soon as the others return."

The others take their time to return, however. In fact, you're quite sure they should've returned by the time of Gilbert's thousandth snore. "Something is wrong." You get up, unwedging yourself from the people flanking you.

You realize just how dark this neck of the woods can be at night, with tall trees blocking the sparse light of the night sky. Stella follows after you, carrying her spear. The camp itself seems remarkably quiet. Excessively so. Were your tent mates the only snoring-

Did you catch a glance of something shining in the woods?

You suddenly feel surrounded by enemies....

"Alright, all of you! Wake the fuck up!" Your commands solicit a collective groan of displeasure from the camp. You're vaguely aware forcing your people to leave their constricted sleeping spots took away their one source of heat in the cold late Autumn night, but it doesn't register as important right now.

Zawadel drags himself out from a makeshift bed of leaves and twigs. "What's this ruckus about, lad?" He asks, remarkably alert for a man in whose hair you can make out brush sticking out. "Our patrol hasn't returned from their shift yet that's what the ruckus' about!"

"Not good... Not good at all. Cramped space or not, no one would make their shift last longer in this cold..." He mutters. "Well, talk won't get our patrol back."

Yohann approaches, with a step cadence typical of a man awoken for the wrong reasons. "Missing patrol, you say? This is getting better and better." Insubordination is not what you need right now from him. Unfortunately, his mood is contagious, and the men begin to show signs of agitation.

"This will keep getting 'better' if you don't shut up and-" Stella begins her tirade, but you cut her off. "No time to waste convincing him. We have to find out what happened.." You tell her softly. Stella is about to reply, when you turn to Zawadel. "You're both sergeants. Care to speak sense to him?"

Zawadel nods, and stares down Yohann. "You've just joined now and you can't get a grip in an emergency? Did you desert or got kicked out of the Army?" The two men begin to face each other off, although for the time being, Zawadel's steely disposition and unwavering gaze has put off the rest of the men from rioting altogether.

"Good call." Stella says. "Although we've got our job cut out for us. Someone was supposed to keep the fire going." She points to the bonfire, now a piece of ashes and slow burning charcoal. Not a lot to make torches with. "I can lead us around well enough. We won't see people before it's too late, but they won't either. A point over torches, I suppose." She shrugs.

You can get a fire going, but it might take a while, and you'll be definitely spotted by whatever might be roaming around. And the longer the patrol is outside, the least likely their remains are to be found. On the other hand, a lit bonfire would surely lead them back to your place.

Your sense of urgency outweights your need for safety, and you turn to face Stella. "Zawadel will handle what he needs to. I'll be counting on you to not get us lost." She smiles ever so faintly. "Good. Sometimes I feel like you want me out of the way." Where could she have gotten that impression..?

You fetch yourself a hatched and shortsword, as the night time won't do you any favors whatsoever with your bow. For her part, Stella plays around with the grip on her spear. "Good find, if I rode a horse." A crude joke crosses your mind, but you keep it to yourself.

The two of you slip away into the darkened surroundings. On more than one occasion, Stella calls out a root or boulder jutting out of the earth, ensuring you can navigate the terrain altogether. Just -how- did she become such a scout? Your musings are short-lived, however. You catch it.. A glimpse of a pair of lights, for a fleeting moment. "Stella... I saw something. Halfway to the right."

"What? I didn't-" She grows quiet all of a sudden. "Glimpse of light?" You grunt your confirmation. "Shit..." She turns back to the camp. "What? What are you doing?"

"Be quiet. We probably ran into-" She gasps. You suddenly realize it. Several pairs of blinking yellow light, encircling you and your companion with muted growls. "A pack of wolves." Of course.. Your mind turns to the corpses and terrified destitute survivors left behind on the hamlets and roads, and the feast such a prey might have presented to the beasts. Emboldened by their easy meals, the creatures have grown fat and vicious towards mankind. And you're suddenly the new prey.

You're still a good ways away from the camp. Calling out for help might trigger the beasts to attack, and there's no certainty help will come.

89, 90 vs 70, Success!

Well, this makes things simpler right? Cut the head and the body will wither. It's been working out well for you thus far... You take a step forward, against Stella's protests, and hurl your hatchet at the wolf closest to you. For a fleeting moment you panic, as cannot tell the weapon's trajectory in the darkness.

You're not sure if you shat your pants, because the relief you felt sure seems like what you'd get after a gigantic shit. The weapon flies true, and the pair of eyes closest to you flickers out with a thud, and a series of loud canine whimpers. You're familiar with butcher's work enough to know the sound of a hatchet cracking a skull. Right between the eyes... Your relief is short-lived, however.

The wolves growl and snarl, and converge upon the flailing body of the spastic, soon to be dead alpha. "Shit, Ephidel!" Stella hisses. "Good kill, they're angry now!"

The wolves are guarding their fallen alpha, and will attack if given the chance.

"Stella, get ready to get them off me!"

"What? What are you planning to-" She gasps. "No, don't make it worse!" By the time she finishes her complaint, you've already drawn your bow and knocked an arrow. You were never one to pray, but you offer a prayer to the gods this time.

You let the arrow fly onto the mass of growling eyes and furr. The all-too familiar thud of arrowhead landing on the ground suddenly becomes a contender for the worst sound you have ever heard in your life.

"WOLVES! HERE!" You holler into the darkness, fumbling for your short sword as they charge at you. "Fucking hell! Always with the killing!" Stella growls, impalling the closest wolf with her spear and struggling to get it off.

One of the wolves charges at you, jumping at your throat. You cover your exposed neck ith your forearm, and get ready to- AGH DAMN THAT HURTS! You cry out in pain as the wolf's teeth sink into your forearm, and in a frenzy you stab the animal repeatedly in the neck and abdomen. Its sense of self-preservation kicks in, and he lets go, limping to the back of his group.

You're bleeding. Stella is just hanging in there, swinging her now disentangled spear in wide arcs to keep the wolves away. They're trying to surround you. At least it seems that way. Things are getting blurry, and you're vaguely aware of a black shape sneaking out of her sight and towards you..

>Hm, I seem to fail at this... I'll go with what's obvious then

"Get off!" You charge as quickly as you can towards Stella, vaulting over her and throwing yourself at the tight formation of angry canines. Now that the flash of expedient anger and distress has passed, you wonder what exactly caused you to be on the floor with them. Maybe you thought you'd land on your feet..?

No time for reflections! A wolf vaults onto your back and gnaws at the back of your neck, and two others snap their jaws at your calf and sword shoulder.

"Ephidel!" Stella cries out in distress, as the wolves throw their heads around, mangling your body. You're vaguely aware that your neck is spared by way of her exertions, although you can't quite see what she's doing over the red pain that's coursing through your body.

You do see a javelin catching the body of another one of the beasts advancing on you. Suddenly you are free of the beast's fell grip, and although you're moving in pain, you can defend yourself now. Not that you'll need to do as much, as you see a whirlwind of blades crashing down on the beasts. Zawadel, what a blessed chance encounter...

With spear and sword, your group slaughters the wolves one by one, until none are left with the nerve to defend their fallen packmates. You're vaguely aware of Stella struggling to get you back on your feet, although the fact you're limping is only making things worse.

"I'm taking him back to the camp!" Stella declares. "Don't you die on me you idiot!"

You force out a ginger smile to her. "Don't forget my bow." Stella's face wrinkles in anger. "It's like your most precious body part isn't it? The one you think you can't lose?" Regardless, she kneels down to pick it up for you, breathing heavily from the effort. Some of the men managed to produce torches in the interim, which undoubtedly contributed to their hasty arrival.

All in all, a good dozen and half wolves were killed. A rather large pack, although you're not sure if their furs were worth the hassle. Picking up a torch, Stella drags you back to the camp, sullenly ignoring the odd mutter of 'lucky bastard' and other cruder words from the men you just found.

"Good thing these brutes paved a path for us." She says, following the trail of flattened vegetation left behind your men's advance. "Or not. We'll be sighted by anything that's slightly more intelligent than a wolf." She glances at you for a moment. "Guess we won't have to worry about distant relatives of yours." Did she just call you something...?

"I'm sorry what was that? I can't hear you over the sound of saving you from the wolves.

Also, sorry for getting us into this mess, it was stupid of me, again, one day I'll learn without getting mauled."

She called you dumber than a dog, didn't she? Yeah, she did call you that. "Isn't that right? I guess I must be the village idiot, to help an ingrate like you!" She doesn't reply to that. "Don't worry, Stella. I'll let you get mauled the next time. You can be sure of that!" You feel her ribs expanding and contracting in a heavy sigh. In other circumstances, you might've found this a rather pleasant experience, but right now you're too cold, hurt and angry to think of molesting your companion.

"If I wasn't grateful, do you think I'd be hauling you across a forest?" She says at last. "You damn near exploded on me yesterday-" "Today, it's not dawn." You interrupt with petulant pedantry. "Whatever. You exploded on my when I told you to do something that might get us killed. Do you think I don't feel the same way towards you?" She shakes her head, managing the gesture in spite of hauling you, a spear and a bow strapped over her free shoulder.

Her words placate you somewhat, even if you're still somewhat angry at her insult. So maybe making the wolves mad was a bad choice. Perhaps you could've handled saving her in a way that didn't end with you surrounded by angry dogs. "I'll come out of our next scrap alright." You struggle with the next phrase, feeling too defiant, angry and maybe even shy. "I'm.. sorry for doing it again."

Stella's face calms down somewhat. "And I'm sorry for being a hag." She manages to turn her head and kiss your cheek. "We'll need to treat your wounds before they get infected. Maybe one of the men knows about it, but I wouldn't bet on it. Unless you think we can drag you to Tiger Rock without being seen?"

"Orvo will be here in two days- no one day- whatever, the lunch after the next one. We have to meet the elders." You'd also risk the loot being discovered by the newcomers, with such a venture.

Injured or not, we can take the chance or messing up the meeting with the Elders.

After evaluating the risks, you come to the conclusion that a group that has survived this long by themselves wouldn't have done so without some form of medical expertise. Heck, if a senile old man can medicate, so can practically-minded soldiers! And of course, you'll get to do the talking with the Elders, when they arrive. "I'll stay around, and ask the men for something to make do about my wounds." Stella frowns, taking you to the tent reserved for the meeting with the Elders. It seems you have a new sleeping spot for the night! "I shouldn't have mentioned that..."

Soon enough, Zawadel returns with the men. Somehow he knew you were resting in the larger tent, or perhaps he's simply accustomed to reporting to the denizens of a tent of that size. "Ephidel, we found the patrol." He shakes his head. "They weren't as lucky as you. By the time we arrived they were half-eaten by the wolves."

Two deaths confirmed. Damn it. "We'll bury them come the morning. Zawadel.. Do you know of any handy cure to prevent infections?" You gesture to your wounds. He diverts his gaze for a moment, mulling over the question. "Usually we handled that with honey compresses, but we don't have honey with us. I'll consult with the men."

Stella sits down by your side after he leaves. "They're probably going to tell you to smear duck shit or something on your wounds..." You laugh quietly. "Good thing we don't have duck shit either." In spite of herself, you see her smile even as she shakes her head. You take a look at her face, admiring her features. Come what may out of this, at least a wolf didn't mangle her lovely face. "What?" She smiles awkwardly at you. "Just feeling good about myself for-"

"Boss, I hear yer in need of some boiled piss?" One of Yohann's former lads barges in. You turn to look at him. "What!?"

He nods matter-of-factly. "Aye, boiled piss. You boil the bad stuff away and clean th'wound with the good stuff." Stella's face twitches in disgust. "That's... I've heard as many bad things about that as good things. And isn't cow piss used for that?"

The man shakes his head. "Nah, ya can use yer own piss tae. Heals better if y'eat loadsa ham, it does." You suddenly begin to feel very light-headed, and you're not entirely sure if it's sleep, injury or the man's words that cause it.

we can always enter his magical realm if we can't find any honey after a days searching, any long waiting and infection will set in

In fact, we could possibly use this as a bit of a training exercise while we are at it. Build up some discipline.

>Namefags to the rescue!

You take a long breath to keep yourself conscious. "What's your name?" He beams up at your question, obviously unacustomed to such pleasantries. "Why, Berthold m'lawd!" Now he lumps you up with those noble cunts... "Alright, I'm going to call you Bert, just don't call me 'lord'. Bert, I'm not going to smear boiled piss all over me. Thanks, but no thanks."

"But m'law- Ephidel, I can tell you th'story of 'ow I-"

"No!" You respond firmly. "That's your elder brother's order. No piss!" His high spirits deflate significantly, he truly thought you'd accept the invitation to his magical realm. "Now, tell Zawadel I told you to get a water boiling and some compresses. And that as soon as the morning comes, you are all to look for bee hives and get honey."

He nods, hanging his head low and leaves the tent. You let your head slump down on Stella's lap. It's almost as if her legs were made for the express purpose of being a cushion! Or maybe you're just exhausted...

Regardless, you blank out for some time, and awake to a stabbing pain in your calf. "Hang in there." Stella formed a makeshift pillow for you from a fresh wolf skin. It's early morning by now. "I was trying to let you sleep, but you're hurting." Her beautiful grey eyes are looking red and baggy, the result of no considerable amount of sleep. She grimaces while cleaning your wound. "They bit you pretty deep... It might gangrene if we don't get Martell to look at it soon."

Stella wraps the compress around your calf, and starts to undo the knot on your cloak. "Not tonight dear, I have a headache." She sighs, not without humour. "I need to tend to your shoulder, idiot." You rise your upper body a bit, letting her hands undo the knots of your clothes and "OUCH!" getting them over your head and breaking the cloths that stuck to the fabric.

Stella begins to works on your shoulder, cleaning it with generous amounts of hot water, and soliciting an equally generous amount of groans and muffled cries from you. "I have to disinfect it." She says with every other complaint. "Now the forearm." She grabs your left hand, and begins to wipe it clean as well, not any less comfortably than before.

Soon enough, you are all bandaged up, and Stella looks over you appraisingly. "I did all I could, now start praying that the men can find you some honey for whatever Zawadel's going to do." She stares at your chest for a moment, before looking away. You were never very muscular or fat, but the bandit life certainly helped push your body to the former camp. "I'll go and put this outside." She turns to the bucket.

>Tell her to stay. The men will take some time to return after all, and you're halfway naked..
