You are Captain WILLIAM PIERCE, a combat rescue officer of the United States Air Force.

You've just recently returned from a (mostly) successful extraction mission, where you managed to help a Russian scientist defect to the United States without casualties. However, you did cause quite the ruckus on the way out. That was a couple of days ago, though. Currently, you were in Colonel Anderson's office getting officially debriefed.

"I have to say, you did one hell of a job." Anderson says, barely able to contain his enthusiastic grin. "You got Sokolov out with zero casualties or losses. Damn near perfect.

"I was just doing the job you gave us, sir." You say.

"Well, either way," Anderson points to a stack of papers sitting on his desk. "people have noticed. I'm already getting drowned in requests to have you attached to various SF ops."

"I guess I should be flattered?"

"Very. It means you made a great impression." Anderson nods. "If you can impress Deltas, then people are definitely going to get interested."

"I guess this means we're no longer doing regular CSAR ops then?" You ask.

"At this rate, not for a while." Anderson shakes his head. "Experienced helo crews are in high demand."

"Anyways, what happened to Sokolov?" You ask.

"Oh? Grew attached to him already?" Anderson smirks.

"Well, I did go into hell and back to rescue him, so the very least you can do is tell me what happens to him." You point out.

"I guess it's only fair." Anderson shrugs. "Sokolov is currently being shipped back to a DARPA facility in the States, where we can properly debrief him and put all that knowledge in his to good use."

"Like that magic interface he developed?"

"Believe it or not, our own scientists had been working on the exact same thing. But don't tell anybody I told you that." Anderson says. "We've already got prototypes for both tanks and fighter planes."

"None for helicopters?" You ask somewhat hopefully. A Black Hawk with a full set of magic shields sounded like a very attractive option.

"Sorry, no love for helos just yet." Anderson sighs. "And even then they'd probably put development into Apaches or Cobras before moving on to Black Hawks."

"Well, it was worth a try." You shrug.

"Hey, keep doing this well, and I can guarantee you the SF boys will be begging for it." Anderson chuckles.

"What about Volgin? He was MIA last I saw him."

"Well, thanks to some intercepted comms courtesy of our friends in the NRO, we know that Volgin and Raikov have been recalled to Moscow to answer for what happened with the Sokolov fiasco." Anderson grins. "The Russians are going crazy over how we managed to infiltrate so far behind their lines. IMINT shows that they're already starting to pull AA assets from the front to bolster their rear defenses."

"Good for the grunts, bad for the SFs." You frown.

"I realize that. Due to the increased AA presence behind the front, the DoD has decided to finally release some new toys they've had in development. And guess who gets first dibs?"

"Really? Us?" You blink.

"You bet your ass."

"What kind of gear are we talking about here?"

"I'll keep that a surprise." Anderson chuckles. "I hope you know how to speak French, because you'll be heading to Istres Air Base. You've got six hours to pack you gear."

"Yes sir!" You salute.

As you leave Anderson's office, you briefly wonder what you should do.

You decide to stop by the SF hangar on the way back to the barracks. After all, you never had a chance to properly thank Ghost for helping you out. She was nice enough to loan you those undoubtedly valuable Nighthawk strikers, and even took the time and effort to train Janice and Tarin in how to use them. Hell, she even tagged along on your extraction mission, which she didn't really have to do at all. You had to at least acknowledge her contributions at least.

The guard at the hangar door at this point recognizes you pretty well, so he doesn't ask for any ID and just nods respectfully at you as you walk through. Inside, the hangar seems pretty the same as you last saw it. Largely empty except for all the gear laying around. However this time, you see Ghost in the back tinkering with a Striker.

"Hey, Ghost." You say to grab her attention.

"W-what?!" Ghost yelps as she looks up to see who it is. "O-oh! Hello C-Captain Pierce! What brings you here today?"

"Ah, nothing much. I was just coming along to thank you for helping us out on that extraction mission." You smile. "Seriously, we wouldn't have been able to do it without you."

"I-I just provided some support. I didn't really do anything that important..."

"Nonsense. you were a huge help." You say, instinctively ruffling Ghost's hair. The witch squeaks in response.

"Nah, I'm actually pretty busy myself, so I'll see you later." You grin as you scratch the back of Ghost's familiar ears, causing her to squeak again. "Hey, if you run into Lex or his guys give him my regards, all right?"

"S-sure thing!" Ghost nods. "A-and you're free to visit here a-anytime!"

The journey back to your barracks takes a little longer than usual, due to the difficulty of finding a ride. Apparently, activity on the base had been picking up rather significantly, and most of the base vehicles were being used to haul troops and supplies that were being shipped in or out. You end having to walk all the way back, at which point it's already a little past lunchtime.

Looks like it's Mediterranean style chicken today. Sweet. There's still a little bit left over, and you quickly grab what's left. You look over to see your witches at one of the tables and move off to join them.

"Oh, hello Captain, it looks like you made it just in time!" Janice smiles.

You only get a silent nod from Tarin.

"Hey Cap!" Red says, chewing on a chicken leg. "How did the meeting with Anderson go?"

It's then that you notice her sheathed sword sitting beside her, leaning on the table edge.

"What, again?" Red blinks.

"It's only a temporary assignment. We're supposed to be testing out new equipment." You shrug.

"And where will we going?" Janice leans forward on the table, hands under her chin.

"Istres AIr Base." You respond. "Down in southern France."

"Oh, how delightful! I've always wanted to see France in person!" Janice smiles.

"But that's nowhere near the front line!" Red frowns.

"Like I said, we're just testing equipment." You shrug. "I'm guessing the higher ups don't want Russian spies to be peeking in. Rammstein is not exactly the most secure place for that sort of thing."

"Well, as long as it's for a reason." Tarin shrugs.

"And Red." You glare. "What have I told you about bringing your sword to mealtimes?"

"Ummmm..." Red then quickly snatches her sword and hides it under the table. "I have no idea what you're talking about."

You decide to go pay Bree a visit. You never really had a chance to really talk to her since you came back. Once you finish your lunch, you split off with your witches and head for Bree's office. However, it's not all flowers and sunshine, as you can hear shouting coming from Bree's office. Judging from the fact that you can only hear Bree's voice, she's probably on the phone with someone, and yeah, you can tell Bree is pissed. When she gets mad, she GETS MAD. The cringing from the other witches as they pass by also clues you in to the fact that this doesn't happen often, so something must REALLY be rustling her to get this kind of response.

You decide to try and listen in on whatever Bree is talking about. It's not too hard, considering the volume she's screaming at, but you have to get closer to the door in order to actually make out what she's saying.

"No! I'm not sending my into into fucking POLAND of all places!"

...

"I don't fucking care what your IMINT says! The Russians have enough ZSUs and SA-6s knock a fucking Dreadnought out the sky! You think they're dumb enough to move it all at once?!"

...

"Even so, my girls are still too green to pull off a deep penetration mission like that! But you're sending them on so many back to back ops they can barely make the round trip to BERLIN!"

...

"Look, you either give my girls at least two or three days to rest, or you send those Strike Eagle strikers you promised us! There's no way we're flying through that much AA as we are now!"

...

"HOW THE FUCK DO YOU LOSE AN ENTIRE SHIPMENT OF STRIKERS?!"

You suddenly hear a loud CRASH and your danger instinct kicks in. You quickly leap forward and open the door to Bree's office.

Inside, you see Bree standing behind her desk, breathing heavily. Behind her, you see one of her office windows shattered. You wonder what happened when you suddenly realize it.

The phone on her desk is missing.

She literally threw her phone through a window designed to stop bullets, and from the lack of a familiar, she did it without using magic.

"WILL THIS IS NOT A GOOD TIME!" Bree screeches.

>Okay, I'll just be going then.

"Bree, I heard everything." You say. "Let's just talk about this, okay?"

"It's nothing you should be concerned with." Bree sniffs, trying to hold back tears. "You're not part of my unit anyways-"

"Bree." You walk up and wrap your big sister in a hug. "I don't give a shit about any of that right now. I'm your brother, so talk to me like one."

It's at this point Bree starts tearing up, but she manages to retain enough composure not to break down sobbing.

"I-It's just that sometimes I get the feeling that the brass just DON'T FUCKING CARE about me or my squadron." She sniffs, returning the hug. "M-my girls aren't the b-best or brightest. In fact they all graduated near the bottom of their c-classes, but they work hard, harder than most other people, and the brass just wants to fucking send them off to die!"

"Bree, just tell me what's going on."

"W-well." Bree takes a deep breath. "Since the war started, me and my squadron have mostly been tasked with CAS or strike mission close to the front. We don't have to fly too far and we've got plenty of support, which is good because frankly, the F-111 strikers just can't keep up with newest Russian stuff, and God help us if we run into enemy itches.

"And then today, I get the order that we're suddenly supposed to go on a deep penetration mission into POLAND. You know, the same Poland crawling with more AA missiles than the entire country has trees! My girls are so bone tired from repeated missions they can barely make the round trip from Berlin! Do the math, Will, what do you think will happen if we go out there?"

"I also heard something about your new strikers?" You ask.

"They keep finding new excuses not to send them to us." Bree scowls. "Every time a fresh batch comes out another unit snipes them out from under me.

"Why?" You blink.

(cont)
>>
>>29595817
"Oh, I can think of several reasons." Bree sighs and slumps back into her chair. "When I first started out, I knew the Matrons and the brass weren't expecting much of me. My unit? They're made up of the all the rejects and washouts the other squadrons didn't want. I wasn't exactly the model student in the academy, so I'm pretty damn sure the Matrons were setting me up to fail."

"That's harsh." You wince. You knew Bree could be unruly, but this was going overboard, wasn't it?

"Yeah, well, I fucking showed them. I whipped these girls into shape, and through a lot of hard work and sweat and tears I managed to turn them into a respectable fighting unit! You'd think somebody would be happy about it but noooooo. Here Bree, have some F-111 strikers nobody wants anymore! Sorry Bree, we don't have any more F-15s for you! Oh sorry Bree, this squadron here needs them more than you do! It's not like you're doing anything important, are you? Fuck 'em." She spits.

"So what are you going to do?"

"Me? I have half a mind to just fake the mission." Bree shakes her head. "No way I'm sending my girls out just to get killed."

"How would you do that?" You narrow your eyes.

"Oh, you know, once we get close to the Berlin line, we drop down to ground level and disappear off the radar. Dump some ammo, wait around for a few hours, and then come back, and I write down in my report that we didn't find anything of note."

"That's... a serious crime, Bree. You'll court martialed for that."

"If I get caught. You have any better ideas?"

"Jeez Bree, I know you're not exactly the easiest person to agree with, but who the hell did you piss off to warrant this kind of abuse?"

"I can think of a few certain individuals." Bree sighs. "Look, I know what they're trying to pull here. They either want me to resign in protest or do something stupid."

"Like faking mission logs."

"Yeah, but at least I have a chance of not getting caught." Bree sighs.

"Actually, Bree, I might know somebody who has extra strikers lying around." You say. "And not just junkers, top the line stuff. If I can get them to loan it out to you, will you do the mission?"

"I might, yeah." Bree nods. "If you can pull it off I will never tease or say anything bad about you ever again."

"How about not physically assaulting me every chance you get?"

"Don't push it."

And once again, you find yourself on the long trek back to the SF hangar. You knew the SF witches had a ton of strikers lying around they weren't actively using.

"O-oh! Captain Pierce! Back so soon?" Ghost blinks as she sees you walk in.

"Hey, Ghost, I have a really, REALLY big favor to ask of you." You say.

You explain the whole situation with Bree to Ghost, who only stands there and nods silently as talk.

"So, do you think you can help me?" You ask.

"Hmmmm, we do have a lot of Strike and Silent Eagle strikers lying around. Enough to equip a whole squadron." Ghost nods. "We've got a lot of freedom on how to use them, so I think we can get away with loaning them out."

"Thank you so much, Ghost. You're a lifesaver." You grin.

"Yeah, I should mention it to him. Thanks again." You say as you ruffle Ghost's hair again, getting another little squeak.

"N-no problem, Captain!"

With that, you find the nearest phone and dial Anderson's number. Once he picks up you recount a more truncated version of events.

"You're right, these are serious implications." Anderson says grimly. "I can't directly do anything about it, but I know some people I can lean on to handle things. I'll see if I can't get that mission retasked to a safer target, or get it scrubbed completely."

"Thanks, sir, it's appreciated." You say.

"Hey, people give SOCOM a lot of shit for supposedly being super shady. I can't just sit by and let somebody else get away with it." Anderson says. "And don't you have a flight to catch, soldier?"

OH SHIT.

"Yeah, I'd better be going then." You say quickly before bolting out the door, giving a quick wave to Ghost.

About thirty minutes later, you link up with the rest of your witches at the C-130 scheduled to ship you out.

"Well look at this, Janice, our brave leader tells us to pack and prepare to leave, and doesn't even follow his own orders!" Red smirks as you try to catch your breath.

"Oh, don't worry Captain, me and Red had the foresight to pack all your belongings for you!" Janice grins.

"Yeah, sorry girls, but I just had to talk to Anderson about some stuff." You shrug.

You had half a mind of telling them what happened, but you decide against it. They really didn't need to know, as this was more of a private matter between you, Bree, and Anderson. Telling them about it now would just get them all worried for no reason.

A few minutes later, Bullseye, Snips, Hoskins, and Rex join you. Apparently they were told to leave the Pave Hawk behind as they wouldn't be needing it.

The trip to Istres takes a few hours, and you and the girls just do some random small chat, but you're honestly in no mood to talk much, since you're still concerned about Bree. The witches seem to sense this and give you some space. By the the time the transport lands at Istres, it's already dark, so the moment you're shown to your quarters you simply flop down on the bed and drift off to sleep.

"Sorry, I'm not interested." You try to suppress a yawn. "Now if you excuse me I want to get a little more sleep in.

"Oh, I understand." Nungesser says with a smile. "I'm sure you're perfectly happy with your current partner!"

Wait what-

"Au revoir, Captain! Until next time!" Nungesser gives you a salute before skipping off.

Huh... odd girl.

With that you just slip back into bed and drift back off to sleep.

Again, you're awoken somewhat violently, but at least the sun is up this time. You open your eyes to see Red standing over you, fully dressed.

"Wake up, Cap, we've got a big day!" Red grins.

"What?" You blink as your eyes adjust to the light. "I thought our testing was canceled for today?"

"Well yeah, that means we got a free day!" Red beams. "We're on France's southern coast, and Ernestine says she knows a really great beach we could hang out at!"

Ernestine? Oh right, that French witch from before.

Wait... when did Red get on first name terms with her...?

"Sure, I guess I can come along." You say as you get out of the bed. Hell, you could probably use a day at the beach. You can't even remember the last time you've been at one that didn't involve pulling some poor sap out of the water and/or getting shot at.

"Hey, wait a minute." You narrow your eyes. "We're not going to one of those nudist beaches, are we?"

"Well, I'm not sure really." Red frowns. "Ernestine said she was taking us to a privately owned plot held by the local witch academy. It's normally empty at this time of year but the weather turned out very nice today. Plus she told me the bring a swimsuit so I guess things will be okay."

True enough. The sun was high and shining brightly, with not a cloud in sight.

"Okay, but if it turns out somebody tries to separate me from my clothes THERE WILL BE BLOOD."

"Noted." Red says.

Outside, you see two jeeps parked on the road. In the front one, you can see Nungesser and Janice waving at you, with Tarin sort of sulking in the back. The second one was holding your aircrew, who all seemed very enthusiastic about this trip. Red hops into the jeep with the other witches while you hop into the second jeep to prevent overcrowding. The witch jeep then takes off, with Hoskins taking the wheel of the second jeep and following close behind.

"So, guys." You say, leaning forward in your seat. "Have any sort of idea what we might be doing out here?"

"Ogling semi-naked witches?" Hoskins grins.

"Other than that. You know what I mean." You sigh.

"I'm guessing we're testing a new type of helo." Bullseye says. "What other reason to make us leave our regular one behind?"

"Hm, it's possible." You nod. "Rex?"

"Seems like it." Rex nods. "I think I remember reading that Istres has a pretty extensive testing facilities."

"Any idea what it'll be like?"

Everybody shakes their heads.

"Well, great help you guys are." You sigh. "Did you guys all get woken up ungodly early in the morning?"

"Yes." They all say in unison.

"Let me guess, Nungesser?"

Everybody nods.

"Don't get me wrong, though, she seems nice." Bullseye says. "Maybe a little too enthusiastic about things, but she's like, smoking hot."

"I guess. I mean, she's French. That's a given." Snips points out.

"Well Bullseye, you should totally make a move on Nungesser." You grin.

"W-what?" Bullseye blinks.

"Come on. She's obviously the type that's into badass pilots. I'm sure she doesn't make the distinction between fighters and helos." You shrug.

"Hey man, I may know how to land my bird with minimum clearance and fly with a busted tail rotor, but interacting with girls isn't exactly my thing." Bullseye gulps.

"Ah, don't worry. Nungesser will probably be doing all the work for you anyways." You laugh. "But just in case, you've all got your rape whistles, right? Because I'm not sharing mine."

"Rape whistles?" Rex blinks.

"Well, good luck to all of you, then." You say solemnly.

Finally, you reach the beach, and it's pretty damn nice. The sand, which apparently hasn't been disturbed by a human foot for months, is almost smooth as glass and is a perfect contrast against the sapphire blue Mediterranean Sea. And there didn't seem to be another soul for miles around. If this wasn't paradise, it was pretty damn close to it.

Pretty much immediately, the witches begin shirking off their shirts and pants to reveal the swimsuits they were wearing underneath. Red and Nungesser run out to the water. Tarin also goes out into the sea but seems to be swimming out to deeper waters. Janice lays down a towel on the sand to lounge, while the aircrew looks like they trying to set up a volleyball net.

Meanwhile, you look up to see Red and Nungesser in a serious water fight, while Tarin was nowhere to be found. However, you somehow were not worried about Tarin.

The aircrew a nearly done setting up the net.

"All right, done." You say as you rub a bit of lotion on the last bit of exposed skin. "You're totally predicted from that nasty Sun."

"Sure, I don't mind." You say as you turn your back to Janice. After all, skin cancer was a terrible thing.

"Just stay still..." Janice says in a soothing voice as she begins to apply lotion to you back. Like her back, the skin on her fingers was impossibly smooth as they slide along from your shoulders down your spine, coming dangerously close to your pants line before she backs off.

"There! All nice and protected!" Janice smiles. "Let's enjoy some sunshine, shall we?"

The both of you lay down on the sand, soaking in the warm sunlight. For a while, neither of you say anything and all you hear is the ocean waves, and the occasional shouting and shrieking from the others. However, Janice finally breaks the silence.

"Captain, do you mind if I ask you a bit of a personal question?" Janice asks.

"Sure, go ahead." You say.

"What exactly do you plan to do once the war is over?"

You pause when your realize that Janice isn't speaking in her usual cheerful, motherly tone. No, it was very definitely serious with a bit of uncertainty mixed in.

"I was thinking of staying in the Air Force. Might make a career out of it." You shrug. "But I sense something is bothering you. Mind talking about it?"

"Oh, am I that obvious?" Janice sighs. "Well, I guess I can say it concerns my future. You see, when I was in the academy, my instructor and even the local matron told me that I had the potential to be a matron myself."

"Whoa, really?" You blink.

"Yes, well, they said I had a 'certain charisma' about me." Janice says. "But that didn't mean I still wouldn't have to work hard at it. Usually to even be considered a matron you either had to have done something very exceptional, or have had a long history of military service."

"So what you're saying is that you deciding whether you want to go full career military to be a matron or not."

"That's a blunt way of putting it, but essentially true." Janice sighs. "By my estimation I'd have to spend another 20-30 years in the military and... I'm not sure if I can make that sort of commitment."

"Well, what do you want to do?" You ask.

"That's the problem." Janice frowns. "I... I don't really know. Maybe that's why I'm willing to tell you about this, to get your opinion."

"It is you who shall be defeated!" You boast. "And no magic! We will decide this contest of strength on our own merits."

"Pfffft, as if we need magic to beat you." Red snorts. "Let's waste em, Ernie!"

"Yes, let's." Nungesser grins and serves the ball.

The game is long and closely fought, with your team and Red's continually trading points while the aircrew cheers you on .There were some highlights, like Red making an epic diving save, and you and Janice accidentally running into each other intercept the ball with Janice accidentally falling on top of you, created a bit of an awkward moment.

However, Red and Nungesser's youth eventually wins out. With you and Janice tiring out, Red and Nungesser make the final push and defeat you y a narrow margin.

"Hah... we.... totally... beat you." Red says as she gasps for air.

"I guess you won fair and square." You wheeze. "How are you feeling, Janice."

"A little bit winded." Janice says, wiping some sweat off her brow. "But otherwise I'm fine."

At that moment you see Tarin walking out of the ocean, holding several lobsters and crabs in her hands.

"I see you've been busy, Tarin." You say.

"A bit." Tarin shrugs. "I felt like having seafood tonight."

"Oh, I think I can make something out of these!" Janice nods. "Thank you very much, Tarin."

"You're welcome." She mumbles.

At this point, the sun is starting to set. Had that much time really passed? Everybody starts packing up their things in preparation to return to base. You then see Nungesser helping Bullseye pack up the volleyball net.

You decide it's time to commence Operation Get Bullseye Laid. It was a simple thing, really. All it took was just a simple bump, causing Bulleye to lose his footing and fall onto Nungesser.

What you DIDN'T expect, though, was the both of them getting tangled up in the volleyball net, making everybody get a good laugh in. After extricating themselves from the net, you see Nungesser give Bullseye a nice, hearty slap on the butt.

Oh yeah, she was totally going for it.

The ride back to base is fairly quiet, considering everybody was pretty tired from a full day at the beach.

However, you see Red suddenly leap out of her Jeep, causing both vehicles to screech to a halt.

"Red! Where are you going?" You yell, jumping out of your own jeep to follow her.

"J-just a second!" Red says, "I need to check something!"

Up ahead, you see quite a few trucks moving around, with one singular figure seemingly standing there to observe them. However, she didn't look military. In fact, the lab coat suggested she was a scientist.

She also seemed to have some familiar looking Red hair.

"Mom? MOM!" Red yells.

The scientist spins around to find the source of the voice and her eyes widen when she sees Red approaching.

"Rachel...?"
