>It's almost like I planned it
After the assault on the fort, you and Helda take some time to let your injuries heal before setting out again. The shop owner pays you a good amount, twenty gold coins for your service. Last you heard she rented a cart and some movers to drag all of the goods the thieves stole back to her shop. How they dealt with the corpses, you have no idea. After a few days of mending, you feel fit enough to set out again.

Helda says the sage lives somewhere in the desert, but she isn't sure of the exact location. You worry for a moment, but she reminds you that magic is drawn to magic, so you need only follow your gut to reach him. Still, the trek may be treacherous, so it might me a good idea to purchase some supplies.

B) Purchase some extra water
C) Purchase some light equipment
D) Go all out

You settle for a few extra skins of water to hold you over on the trip. The morning where you finally set out is chilly, and the sunrise is beautiful overhead. You drink down the first waterskin within the first day, and decide you need to take smaller sips when you do. The trip altogether lasts four days, and by the end you are running dangerously low.

You arrive at the foot of a mesa in the desert. It stands at least one-hundred feet above ground level. You walk around the side of it until you come to a sort of staircase that seems to be the only way up. The two of you climb it, and at the top find a small hut mad of mud and straw. It doesn't look like a very sagely place to live, but it does feel magical.

You rise from the chair immediately, afraid of what might happen next. You look around and see that you are in a grand foyer, with a single staircase leading up to a second floor. There are large double-doors lining the walls on either side. You turn around, and see no actual entrance. It seems the chair serves as the front door.

You dust yourself off and begin wandering about the mansion. The place is very finely decorated, full of flowers in exquisite vases, and everything is polished to a mirror shine. You can even see your face clearly in the floors. You examine some of the doors, but they all seem locked, and not even a good push budges them. You wander back to the staircase, and start to climb it, but are stopped when there is a sudden poof of white smoke at the head of the stairs. As the smoke clears, you see a tall, thin man in a purple cloak standing there. He seems to do nothing for a moment, only looking away from you as he rests his chin on his hand. Then, out of nowhere, he speaks.

"Behold, little fledgling, the countenance of the great...ARCO BALENO!" he spreads his hands up to the sky and multicolored sparks begin erupting from his sleeves, accompanied by whistles and cracks. His cape flutters, even though there is obviously no wind here. "Tell me little bird, why have you come to my lovely home? Why do you wish to see the great... ARCO BALENO!" Again, he spreads his hands. This time, the sparks are replaced by confetti and several colorful butterflies.

When he sees you staring blankly at him, his overly energetic smile falls into a frown. You begin to see tears in his eyes, and he turns away, running out of sight. You hear sobbing for a moment, and then another puff of white smoke consumes him.

You jog to the top of the stairs, and hear muffled sobbing from behind the nearest door. Again, you try it but the door is shut tight and immovable. You lean your ear to it, and deduce that he must be inside, and must be quite upset about something.

But, I should expect as much from a beginner. So tell me, little bird, what cause brings you to my home?" You tell him you came to study under him, to which he laughs. "Haha, silly boy. She is left in awe of the great house. You give her a moment to take it all in before introducing her to Arco. Again he seems distant at best.

"I assume neither of you are able to Step. If Volt is the best spell you know, it is a safe bet. Take this, it will help you get around." He tosses you a small key, likely to the many locked doors around the house. "Make yourselves comfortable, feel free to wander the mansion. As you read the book again, you find a spell that is meant to reverse time within a small bubble of space. The explanation seems very complicated, but the execution is simple enough.

You learn the spell mend. This spell drains a great deal of energy from the caster to restore any physically damaged object to it's prior condition. The longer ago the object was damaged, the more stamina it will take to restore it. This spell works on flesh and bone injuries, but will not cure things such as burns, illnesses, or psychological damage. It will also not grow back new appendages.

With your new spell in tow, you shut the book just in time to see Helda coming out of the kitchen with two bowls of steaming soup. She places one in front of you, and sits down in the next chair with her own. You look into the bowl and see that the soup consists mostly of rice, meat, and potatoes. You take a bite, and nearly spit it back out. Helda seems none too pleased with the result either, but glances over to you to see if you are eating.

Helda comes back out, and you tell her that you're going to find a room with something resembling a bed. The two of you wander the halls until you find one that seems to hold a fw guest rooms, 4 total. You enter the first one and begin setting your things down. Helda seems fidgety. From behind her back she produces a soft hairbrush, which sends a light shiver up your spine. You immediately tell her to forget about it, but she begs and nags for nearly twenty minutes until you finally give in just to get some sleep. She takes her sweet time finishing, and then finally the two of you lay down. She wraps her arms around you beneath the blankets, and you respond half-heartedly. It takes a little while to get used to the unusually soft bed, and the slightly uncomfortable warmth that comes with being in a warm house, under warm covers, and pressed up against another person. Eventually though, you doze off and sleep until morning. A least, you assume it's morning, since there isn't a single window in the house.

He hands you a broom, and you begin wiping the absence of dirt from the staircase. You ask him if, when this is all done, it'll be time to do some actual studying. He walks past you up the stairs and simply remarks that if you manage to finish before lunch, he'll make sometime. You do your best to make it look as though you did some actual work around the foyer, but there is little you can do to clean a room that is already clean. As you're almost finished, you hear quick footsteps coming from down the hall. Helda emerges, breathing heavily, apologizing for waking up late.

You hand her a rag and tell her to polish the flower vases. You aren't actually sure that you're supposed to polish flower vases, but neither is she apparently, since she complies anyway. Once everything is done, the two of you head up the stairs to see if Arco is ready. you pound on his door and tell him that you're finished. He poofs back out to look around the room, and is apparently satisfied.

"Very well, I am a man of my word. Let us away to my laboratory, where you may learn what magic truly is."

As you prepare to go, you look back at Helda. She seems unsure of what to do with herself. You ask if Helda may join you in the lab, but Arco forbids anyone but you and him to enter his "sanctum".

You promise to finish up quickly and return. You tell her to try to find something to do while she waits, and that you'll find some way to make it up to her. She seems disappointed by the circumstances but nods and walks off to find something to do. You turn back to Arco, and tell him you're ready. He spreads his cape over your head, and when he pulls it back, you find yourself standing in the center of an enormous room, akin to a cathedral in both size and wonder. There are shelves three stories tall, and long tables covered in lab equipment and notes stacked as high as you can reach. Arco shows you around the breadth of the room, briefly going over what each object and gadget does, and how the shelves are organized. He even has a small silver tray that produces tea and sandwiches when you lift the cover, something he claims to use when he's having a breakthrough and doesn't want to leave for food. He pulls you over to a large, pre-painted circle on the ground, used as a base for rituals. He begins explaining the fundamentals of casting such rituals, and goes into great depth.

You study hard, and even take quick notes of a few of the things he teaches you. For all his showboating and narcissism, Arco clearly knows what he's doing. Every question you have, he is able to answer in full detail. Through him, you learn the methods of not only minor rituals, but the basis of summoning, and binding rituals. When at last he tires of instruction, the two of you head back to the main house by way of his cape. You reappear at the foot of the stairs, and Arco bids you good night. As you enter one, you think you hear a noise from inside. You enter, and look around, letting your eyes adjust to the dark. There is a lump in the bed, and when you peel back the blanket, you find Helda, still in her clothes save for her sandals. She is curled up on the bed with a black bundle of cloth in her arms. You swallow nervously, and then touch your lips to hers. You hold this position for a few moments, taking in the sensation of her lips, until you feel her moving next to you. Suddenly her palms rise up and shove you away. Helda falls out of the bed, with a look of terror on her face. You try to get up and help her, but she quickly stands and runs out of the room with your bundled cape still in tow. Arco makes you scrub a stack of spotless plates in the kitchen, with the exception of the dishes you and Helda used. Afterward, he brings you to the lab again, and begins lecturing you on the principles of alchemy. The subject goes on for about an hour before you realize that you've barely been paying attention. When you come back to the conversation, Arco is talking about the table of elements, and how they interact with one another.

You try to take your mind off of Helda, and focus on the lesson. You learn a great number of things from Arco, including the fact that earth, fire, wind and water are not the only elements of the world, and in fact are nowhere on the chart to begin with. You also learn the exact composition of the human body, an unsettling yet still incredibly intriguing fact.

By the end, you are both tired again, and Arco's throat is sore from speaking. He ends the lesson, and the two of you return to the house. He bids you goodnight, and you see as he leaves, that the lamps in the house are already turning themselves dim for the night. It must be late. Your stomach growls ferociously, and you realize that you haven't eaten in almost two days.

You knock and call again, telling her you only want to talk about what happened. This time there is no movement.

You knock one more time, and ask her to talk. You assume there will be no answer, but just as you walk away, you hear a click. You try the door again, and it opens. You step inside the room and shut the door behind you. The room looks terrible, as if a hurricane came through. The stands and lamps are all broken and thrown about. The wallpaper is peeled off. The only thing intact is the bed, which looks like a pack of dogs had been wrestling on it. Beneath the blanket is a large lump, roughly in the shape of Helda. She makes no sound, and no movements.

You walk over and sit on the bed nearby. She tosses the blanket over you, and crawls up and into your chest. You wrap your arms around her and try to be as gentle as you can. She still cries, wetting your shirt with her optic streams of sorrow. She still continues to repeat her apology, and you keep telling her that she didn't do anything. Finally she seems to settle down. The room is silent for a few minutes as you hold her, resting your chin on her head. Eventually she sniffles and works up the strength to say something coherent.

"I'm sorry. I thought it was okay to want you, but it's not. I thought it would be safe to pretend we could be together, but after all this I know you'll only leave. You could go on and be whatever you want... you could be with anyone you wanted. But I can't give you anything." You ask her again what she means by all of it.

"You know what happened to me. I didn't study for my magic like you. I traded for it. And now because of that, I... I'll never be enough for you. I know you want to touch and feel close. I thought just holding one another might be enough to satisfy you, but after what you did I know you'll only want more and more of me. And one day you'll want to have a child. A real child, not a pretend one. But I can't give you one... and then you'll leave..."

She begins sobbing heavily again, gasping for air in between. She pulls on your shirt with clenched fists, again repeating her apology. "I don't want you to go! I'm sorry! I wish I could take it back, I want to give you everything you want! I'm sorry! I'm sorry!"

You turn and join your lips to hers, placing a hand on her cheek to comfort her. You use the other arm to hold her as close as you can. You can feel the heat of her body rising, and without a word exchanged the two of you know exactly what is to be done. Using your hand in the small of her back to support her, you lay her on the pillow and continue to shower her neck and shoulders with affection. She places a hand on the back of your head, and another works to unbind you. The whole of that night, not a word is spoken between either of you, but every action, every motion has a deep meaning. By the time you finish, the both of you are too tired to even roll off of one another, and you sleep embracing in a whole new way.
The following morning, you rise at the same time. You feel absolutely drained. You crawl out of bed and throw your trousers and boots back on. You run your fingers through your hair and take a deep breath as you stretch yourself out. You turn back and see that Helda is sleeping, but smiling unusually brightly this morning.

You throw on your tunic, and tuck Helda in to make sure she stays warm. You gently press your lips to hers, then go to find a quick meal. You have a simple wedge of cheese and a half a small loaf of sourdough, then head to the foyer. There, Arco reclines on a floating mass of white clouds, sipping tea as it slowly slides around the room. You tell him that you're ready for work.

"I'm sure you are," he says smiling. "Although I'm surprised you feel so energetic after the two of you stayed up so late destroying my second favorite guest room."

You keep quiet, somewhat embarrassed. Arco slides down off of his cloud and approaches you with arms wide open. He claps his hands on your shoulders, smiling brightly.

"Have no shame, little bird. I am honored to be host to an evening of such passion. To have my home be the one where your lady love plucked the final petal on the flower of your youth," he produces a rose from thin air and holds it to his nose, "to see such a promising young boy truly become a man is quite entertaining. But enough of this. Enough of these foolish chores. You are a man now! A man deserves respect! He deserves to earn his pay with the sweat of his brow! I would be honored to teach you all the ways of magic that I know, you cunning devil. Come! We will study, and you will be privy to all my knowledge and experience!"

You both away to the lab once more, and spend the entirety of the day studying and learning.

You have learned the spell 'Shine'. With a simple wave of your hand, your countenance becomes impressive to all. Your features do not change, but anyone who looks at you while this spell is in effect will be charmed by your overflowing charisma. This spell cannot be used to convince or control others, only make yourself stand out. Anyone who makes direct eye contact with you during this spell's duration will be unable to stop thinking about you for the next seven days.

After a long day, you return to Helda. You tell her about what happened with Arco, and she congratulates you with a kiss, and a steak for dinner. Afterward, Helda goes to have a bathe, and tells you to go to bed without her, and that she'll find you in whatever bed you choose tonight.

You walk behind her and place a hand on her waist, pulling her close. You tell her that you recall her asking to bathe you, and tell her that now sounds like a good time to take her up on it.

Five years. For five years you study and toil beneath Arco Baleno, learning all he knows about magic. You learn the composition of the universe, and what each star is made of. You learn to unravel time, twist space, and see across dimensions. You learn to stare into the sun and count each flame on its surface, and use that number to count the days until the end of the world. You learn all that he can teach you.

For five years, you love Helda. You spend your nights together. You feed each other, and wash each other. You sit on your bed, with bare skin touching and exchange the heat of your bodies. You turn out the lights and explore each other's bodies. You become addicted to her flesh, and she is happy to serve it.

You learn the forbidden spell 'Step'. You are able to teleport up to one mile in any direction, so long as the place you wish to end has solid ground to stand on when you arrive. This spell cannot be used in rapid succession, or you risk disappearing from reality altogether.

You finish up a circle alongside Arco. You both clap your hands to dust off the chalk. Arco insists on writing circles with your own hands, to better bond with the cosmic energy. You suspect he does not know Chalk. You stand on the opposite end of the circle from Arco and hold your hands over the edge as you were taught.

The circle begins to glow a shining yellow, and the magic dust settled in the key points begins to dissolve away. Slowly, the dust reforms into an odd figure. The room shakes, and the shelves wobble. Instruments are tossed down onto the stone floor. You can feel your heart begin to beat harder and faster, and there is a hollow feeling in your stomach. Arco seems to be struggling to contain the creature as it emerges from another plane. Whatever it is, it must be truly powerful.

Suddenly the lights burn out, and the only source of light is the glowing circle. Then, all is still. The lights come back up. The figure in the center of the circle is little more than a large spider, dragging a baked ham on a plate in its web. It seems to look at you curiously. Arco tells you to try communicating with it.

You assure the spider that you are not after its meal, which relaxes it a bit. You ask for permission to take notes on the spider, and you swear if it could blush it would have. It makes a strong pose as you and Arco work to sketch it and document all of its traits. Soon, you have gathered all the useful information you can from it.

Before sending the spider off, you take a moment to ask where it comes from. You assumed reaching into another dimension would yield something more interesting than an admittedly intelligent spider. It seems to think for a moment, then scitters about in the circle, making some kind of picture with strings of web. It's not very easy to tell, but the end result seems to resemble a tower with a monkey and a spider at the top. You look to Arco, but he only shrugs. With that, you release the binding and the spider disappears, along with its ham.

Arco claps you on the back. "Well done for your first time. Don't be discouraged simply because it wasn't something more impressive. The universe is full of mysteries. That will be all for today, I must see this place cleaned up. I trust you can see yourself out." You tell him you'll see him tomorrow, and Step back into the mansion. You laugh and place a kiss on her soapy forehead. The two of you have a relaxing soak together before heading to the dining room for a quick snack before bed. While you sit chewing on a piece of salami with Helda next to you, you hear a low rumble and the house shakes a bit. Arco must be playing with blasting powder again. Suddenly the wall near the entry chair cracks, as another rumble and shake occur, this time more violent than all the others together. The crack tears up the wall and to the ceiling. The rumbles cease, and you start to hear something that sounds like hammers on stone.

The dust covered soldiers threaten you again, but you step behind them, taking them by surprise. They spin around in shock, and watch with horrified expressions as your form goes from that of a man to a ten foot tall hair beast with a bird's head and massive claws. With one great swipe, you eliminate three of them, slicing their faces and knocking them to the ground. The rest of them all charge you at once. You clumsily swing at them, not used to this lumbering form. It only takes a single blow from your heavy arms to incapacitate them, but they do manage to land a few hits in the mean time. You start following the wall of stone around the side, to see if there's anything to be seen. You stop and gaze in horror, as you spot a large camp, hundreds of white tents, all spread across the desert floor. You take a closer look, and see that the men there all have similar uniforms to the ones you just killed. The flag hanging above them appears to be that of the republic. It seems that war has finally come to your doorstep.

Time to convert them into our personal legion by show of force.

Technically you're in what is considered Republic territory, but they don't actually send anybody out to enforce the laws here. It's the same way Canada extends pretty far north, even though nobody really lives very far away from the US border.

That's gonna be it for tonight. Fresh new thread in the morning as always. I love you all, thank you for playing, and thank Wrenloft for putting up with our doujin shit.

The child fell asleep in my lap while I've been playing with you all, and I need to put her in bed. That's why I'm ending a bit early.
