>Rage against the machine
You stand near the wall of the mesa, staring at the warcamp less than a mile away from you. The men there are dressed in dusty uniforms and goggled helmets. They each carry a single sword and not much else. As far as you can tell, they aren't exactly frontline soldiers. It's more likely that they are builders. Looking at the mining equipment they have, they must have wished to turn the hollowed mesa into a fortress, not knowing it was already the property of Arco Baleno. You begin approaching the camp, careful not to seem like an immediate threat.

When you draw close, three men spot you and walk over to halt you. They tell you to leave this area, or be placed under arrest by the Free Republic for trespassing on government property.

You stand tall and ask to see their commanding officer. They scoff and brandish swords at you, but seeing your face completely confident and unafraid, they back down and stow their weapons. They agree to bring you, and ask you to follow. As you enter the camp, you see how these men live. They are covered in dirt and dust from the journey across the desert. If you had to guess, you'd say they were retreating back from the east, judging by the way they set up. You notice a bad smell in the air, like rotting chicken. You think whatever business you have here ought to be wrapped up quickly before you contract some kind of sickness.

You come to a round tent, and the men escorting you open the flap for you to enter. You do so, and see a folding table with two men sitting behind it. There are crates full of books and records, and a large map rolled out on the table. You approach the table and the two men look at you with annoyed expressions. One of them stands, unashamedly resting a hand on his sword.

"Who the fuck are you and what do you want?"

So far we've been evenly matched in terms of strength with the Empire, but they beat us in sheer numbers. Therefore, the construction of this fort is of the utmost importance. Now, if you and your ilk wish not to be hanged for treason, I'd suggest you all pack up and march back into our lands where its safe. You pull your arms away and shove them, telling them you're capable of finding your way home. They look at you with digust, and glare as you walk back out of the camp and toward the mesa. You reenter the tunnel and follow it all the way back to the foyer of the mansion. When you come back in, Helda is wrapped in a blanket and floating on a small white cloud. Arco still stands at attention, watching the entrance. When he sees you, you can visibly watch as the stress of the situation rolls off of his back. He greets you with a hug and a pat on the back. Helda smiles as well, hopping down from the cloud as it dissipates, and running over to wrap the blanket around the both of you and hold you in an embrace. Arco asks what all the commotion was about, and you inform him that the Free Republic army plans to run them off of the land and turn the mesa into a fortress. Arco rubs his temples and sighs.

You tell Arco to snap out of it, and put forth that defending the mansion is the best course of action. You hold all the power in this situation, not the meek soldiers. You ask if Arco know any spells that might protect the house if they try to gain entry.

"Alas, magic of that magnitude does not exist to my knowledge. There are ways to prevent them, of course, but they would be rituals, and those take time. I'm sure Helda and I could lay the circles down if you were able to hold them off in the meantime. But if we seal the mansion tight with you outside, you'll be alone with them, and the only other way in is the door."

A) Tell him you'll take the risk
B) Suggest assaulting the camp directly
C) Other

Ok, I want to run some plans by you guys. Since Arco knows his own mansion well enough, we help him set up traps and set up good ambush points. We should also do something to destabilize the tunnel and collapse it to prevent any invaders from escaping. After we mop them all up, we teleport to their basecamp and slaughter the shit out of them, by being sneaky and all that.

Maybe we could:
>set up traps so arco and helda can be safe
>summon mook creatures to keep the soldiers busy
>assault them while the mooks keep them busy, we'll show them the fear
>>
>>29630252
This seems like a good plan, but how many mooks can we summon?
>>
>>29630290
Good question, I think a few hundred mooks should do the trick, hope we can reach that.
They are mainly cannon fodder though, the main tactic of fear will be the devastation Owain's magic and combat skills will bring them.
We don't need to obliterate them either, just decimate them, make them kneel to their new overlord.
>>
>>29630252
Summoning doesn't work that way. You would only be able to summon one mook at a time, and the process of drawing the circle takes up to an hour, and each circle is only good for one use. You could summon something pretty strong, but then you'd have to make a bargain for them to help you.
>>

Alright gorilla warfare it is my vote then. Traps, guerrilla, and them locking the place for 1 or 2 days until we scare our enemies enough.

So yeah, guerrilla assault while our companions keep safe. Anybody agrees?
>>
>>29630446
Question: Even if we do seal off the mansions, we can still teleport in and out, right?
>>
>>29630539
Ask yourself this: If Arco can step in and out of his own mansion, why would he hide a secret chair door at the top of a mesa in the middle of a mud shack. It's not as though he puts out a welcome mat for visitors, you found the place completely by accident.

The plan is set. You and Arco go to prepare the components needed to secure the mansion while Helda puts on some proper clothes. When you gather back at the foyer, Helda begins Chalking the circles along the walls and floor, while Arco lays out the components. There are two small circles in place at the entrance to the foyer: one that creates a force wall to keep the enemy out, and a much smaller one that protects the force wall circle. They then create several others trailing down the length of the tunnel, to serve as tripwires. Most of them will explode into flame or electricity, but the one nearest the foyer will cause a collapse of the tunnel. It is the last line of defense, reserved for the end in the hopes that you are able to make it back without Arco needing to seal the tunnel.

Arco loans you a new cloak, one with a glamor that will prevent you from being seen by anyone who isn't seeking you. He warns you that the effect will not work to muffle the sound you make, or stop them from noticing you if you do something blatant, like casting obvious spells. You thank him and don the cloak, lifting the hood over your head. As you are about to leave, you feel something catch your wrist. You turn back and see Helda. She looks at you worriedly, then pulls you in and closes her eyes, raising her lips up toward you.

With that, you make your way down the tunnel and out to the desert. It is fully dark now, and as you look out at the camp you see that they have lit torches on long poles to light the area. Even with that, you don't think you'll have too much trouble remaining unseen so long as you're careful. You approach subtly, trying your best not to be spotted. There are a few times when you feel the lookouts should surely have noticed you, but you suspect Arco's glamor cloak is working to prevent it.

You reach one of the tents and kneel down, peeking around it to gather information. The men of the camp milla bout or sit down to small meals. Many of them are intoxicated, and blathering on nonsensically. There are a few though, mostly those on guard duty, who are alert and dangerous. If you're going to work your way around the camp, a map may help. But obtaining one may be a strike against your stealth capabilities.

It isn't until you see one of them being saluted that you have a target. You tail him as best you can without being noticed. He eats a meal, drinks heavily, and stumbles off to bed in the course of about two hours. Finally, he walks into his tent and collapses onto the roll. You wait a few more minutes after he goes silent to make sure he is out, and then nonchalantly walk in through the front flaps. Nobody notices you. You see the officer lying on the ground, drooling and burping in his sleep. You kneel down and place both hands on his chest, casting shock until you're sure he's out for good. You feel no pulse when you check, and then flip him over to get at his pockets. You find a simple map of the camp, as well as a key to something. You pocket the key and unfold the map.

You smash the bull skull with an axe blow, caving it on and causing the rest of the body to collapse into its normal state. Even as you do this, though, you feel more hands rising up to grab you. It seems this mage has no shortage of ways to slow you down, even if it is just delaying the inevitable.

You hack at the hands one by one, making your way toward him. He ceases summoning the hands for a moment, and begins to cast something else. You're unsure what it is, until the ground beneath your feet begins transforming into a pit of foul black mud, dragging you down into it.

You Step out of the mud pit and reappear in front of the controller. He is shocked by this, clearly, and even more so when you morph into the form of the owlbear. You swat him aside, sending him rolling across the desert floor. He gets back to his feet and raises his bone defiantly. You charge on all fours, and pounce on him. You land on top of him, tackling him to the ground and causing the back of his head to smash into the floor. You screech in his face, satisfied with your final blow, but then feel a burning pain in your furry chest. You look down and see that the fingers of his right hand have dug themselves into you, and the hair arouns the area is falling out, as the skin turns red, then purple, then slowly black. You quickly rise off of him, but the rot continues as he gets up, holding his head.

"The rot of the dead, boy. Summoning those dusty bones wasn't my only means of fighting. Can you feel your blood and flesh dying, ready to fall off of you in ragged chunks? Haha!"

The pain of the wound is paired with a sense of fatigue. Your heart pumps slowly and your breath is shallow. You don't think you have many spells left in you.

You rise to a sitting position and snap your fingers, showering the controller with sparks. They catch his hair and robes, sending him up in a swirling cloud of orange flames. He screams and falls to his knees. You have enough time to find your feet and start making your way back to the house. Soon though, you sense something amiss, and turn back. you see that he is no longer burning, but is stuffing something into his mouth. You look more closely and see that he is yanking bones from the ground and gnashing on them, sending broken shards everywhere. The sight is gruesome, but you have no time to waste watching.

You make it back to the house, barely able to stand. Arco is there, and he helps you to a seat than he conjures with a wave of his hand. He asks you what happened.

You try to convince Arco that you only need a minute to recoup and you'll be ready to go again, but he won't have it.

"Did I teach a fool? You can barely move under your own power, any more spells and you'd be shaving decades off of your life. You will go to the lab, Helda can give you some of the blue to help you recover faster. But in the mean time, I absolutely forbid you to return here." He places a hand on your cheek, "You are my legacy. I think of you as a son. And what kind of father would let his son march into battle with a kitchen knife and a pot lid as his tools. Go and find your lady, bring her to me and I will Drag you to the lab before returning myself."

You continue to argue, but Arco shoves you down the hall and returns to sentry on the tunnel. You gather Helda from the room and bring her back to the foyer. Arco Drags you to the lab and helps you into a chair before retreating to the mansion. You are left alone with Helda, who asks if there's anything you need.

You recall that in addition to blue, a mixture of Arco's own invention meant to restore stamina quicker as a substitute for sleep on long nights, there is Red Hot, an experimental pill that the two of you have been working on for over a year. Red Hot would nearly instantly restore you, but you have never tested it on a person, and have no idea what may occur besides the desired affect.

You think for a moment, and though the reason in you is setting of alarms as loud as thunder, you know there is only one thing to do. You point out the small bottle of pills to Helda, and ask her to bring it to you. She nods and hurries over. When she hands you the bottle, you pop the cork and instantly the smell of the stuff hits your nose. It burns like mint and cinnamon, but you can't afford to worry about that. You shake two of the things into your hand, take a deep breath, and swallow both of them dry. They form a lump in your throat all the way down, and as they slide you can already feel the heat from them. When they hit your stomach, you begin to heat up, sweating and shaking. Helda asks if you're okay, and you tell her to fetch you some water. You drink it down greedily, but it only barely relieves the pain in your guts. The sweat pouring from you begins to steam from the heat of your body. You think you may gon insane from the heat. Despite all this, you can feel the energy rising in you again. You feel unstoppable. There is no time to waste now, there is no telling how long the effects will last.

You grab Helda and deliver unto her a deep kiss. You feel her struggling not to push you away as your lips burn hers. When you pull back she holds her mouth, but does nothing to show her pain otherwise. You shake your head to clear your thoughts and Step back into the mansion.

When you arrive, you are just in time to see a massive golem dragging itself through the tunnel. You look closer and see that it is made of human flesh, and that part of it has the same uniform as the captain you murdered earlier that night. Arco snaps his fingers and Combusts the various grotesque parts of its body, but they grow back as quickly as they fall off. You descend the staircase and ready a spell to help Arco.

But alas, new parts simply emerge to replace the old ones. You do notice though, that it seems to be getting smaller. Eventually you two have burned off enough that it seems to collapse under its own weight. Suddenly the top of it begins ti wiggle and twist, and out emerges a blood soaked man with deadlocks and tattered robes. He steps up on top of the golem and wipes the blood from his eyes.

You extend your arms up and toward him, and the familiar green electricity pours from your fingertips and hits him dead on. He is sent flying up and back into the wall above the tunnel, slammed hard and then falls to the ground. You can still see a few arms of the stuff fly off of him behind the huge flesh mound. Arco turns to ask you why you're here, but you can't tell him what you did, at least not yet.

The necromancer emerges from behind the flesh mound, singed and frothing. "You filthy...I'm tired of playing with you!" He holds his hand out, palms up in a sort of claw. You and Arco both ready spells, but are stopped when you feel the mansion begin to shake violently all around you. You both lose your footing, but he seems totally fine as whatever spell he is casting wreaks havoc on the mansion, sending pots crashing to the floor and cracking the walls and ceiling. You tell her that you need to find the red Arco keeps in the lab, and ask her to help you look through all the cupboards for it. When she asks why, you simply tell her that there's no time to explain all the details, and that you need to hurry quickly. She starts searching the cupboards and drawers as well. Each moment passes by like an hour, and your heart rate is already racing with the heat from the Red Hot. You search through dozens of places until finally Helda calls out, telling you she has them. You run over and snatch the crates, promising to come back just as soon as things are settled. You Step back into the mansion.

You reappear in the foyer, next to the mound of flesh. You run around the side of the ceiling slab, and see something that almost makes you drop the crate. Arco is standing up again, arm still bleeding profusely, and turning to see you. His eyes are white, and his motions are almost like that of a marionette. You try to speak with him, but all he will do is shuffle toward you. You look back over your shoulder and see the head of the necromancer. Your keen eyes feel like a curse, as you see that jutting from his mouth, open in a sick smile, is a tongue that glows with the light of the ritual circle tattooed into it. You look back at Arco.

"Shit. Figures I'd jump to a body without a fucking arm. It'll take dozens of them to grow a new one." Arco looks up at you and smiles. His smile is unchanged. "Hello boy. It's me, your good friend, right? I hope you don't mind me taking this body as a consolation for you burning mine. Hehe. At least this one has a warranty. Wouldn't want to burn your friend's corpse like you burned mine would you?"

You look Arco's corpse in the eye. The pain from the Red Hot surges through you. You raise a single hand up and point at him. He stops smiling, and suddenly looks worried. He can't cast spells with a body so beaten up. As the two of you have a stand-off in the ruined foyer of the mansion, you look beyond the shell of your friend, into the years you spent together. The years you studied and became like brothers in all aspects. You speak to the man that was, and beg his forgiveness. You snap your fingers.

You have created the Forbidden Spell 'Incendium'. Combust has been upgraded.

His mouth opens and flames pour out. Then his nose, ears, and finally his eyes. There is no scream. There is no pain. Only the view of a man cooked alive from the inside out. The burning husk hits the floor, and soon the rest of it is burnt into white ash.

You Step back into the lab to see Helda. She is nursing a bottle of Red, likely for the damage you did to her when you kissed her earlier. She runs to hug you, but you hold her away. Your body is too hot. The sweat burned out of you ages ago. Your only hope now is to be near her when it ends. You try to make it to the chair, but soon your knees give out and you must fall. Helda goes to help you up, but you burn her hands when she touches you. Deep in your heart you feel only two things: love and hate. Two red emotions, swirling around each other eternally, with no true direction left. You roll onto your back and look up to the ceiling, and all goes red.
>>
>>29642368
Touch is the first to return. It's warm. You can feel your heartbeat. You know your limbs are there, but you don't have the strength to move them.

Next is hearing. Your breathing. It's so loud, yet you never noticed it before. Someone else is breathing too. It sounds so sweet somehow. Almost like a song.

Smell. Odd, that smell should come back so soon. Something reeks. And yet, there is something else. A familiar scent, not quite good, but comforting. Something that makes you hungry, in a way.

Finally your eyes open. Things are dark and blurry at first, but with effort you can open your eyes more, and get them to focus. The lab. Tables and shelves. You aren't dead, at least not yet. You look to your left and see piles of books, thrown every which way, with no regard for their condition. You look to your left, and see a table pressed against the one you're on. They are both turned into makeshift beds. On the table next to yours is Helda. She's sleeping. You try to speak, but your voice hasn't quite come back.

You hop down off the table, nearly falling over until Helda catches you and straightens you out. You hug her and place a kiss on her head. "I love you too, snookums, but stop. You really really stink." You lean against the table and sit back down. Helda brings you a bottle of room temperature water and some sandwiches. You eat and drink until you feel a bit better. After a few minutes you are able to stand and walk fairly easily. You talk with Helda a bit more. It seems like you're stuck in the lab due to its lack of entrances, and you are personally unable to Step with Helda alongside you. You decide its time to get some studying done, for both your sakes.

You learn the spell 'Drag'. You can Step with others accompanying you, but they must keep their eyes shut, or otherwise be blinded during the trip.

You Step back into the mansion alone at first. The room is just as you left it. A mound of flesh in the center, a slab of the ceiling missing, and a pile of ash resting near the stairs.

You get to work sorting things out. A few Mends take care of most of the heavy lifting, but the mound of flesh has to be burned up with Incendium. After all of that, it's a few Floats to clear up the ash and shovel it into the tunnel before Mending the wall. You take what remains of Arco and find a nice flower pot to clean up and place them in. You seal the pot with a bit of wax and set it on the nightstand by his bed. You suspect it will rest there for as long as the mesa stands against the sky.

When you bring Helda back, there is no sign of the events that took place. She looks around, and expresses how lonely it will feel without Arco. You try to comfort her, but she insists on giving you a good long bath before you try anything affectionate.

In my opinion, a To do list:
1) try to contact Arco in the other world, it'd be nice if he could talk to him now and then, ask for advice, etc
2) crush the empire and the republic
3) murder every single necromancer
>>
>>29644431
we also need to determine how safe our home is. We know the Republic is trying to set up a secret fort here and I don't think they'll just stop with one necro and a band of haughty soldiers.

Helda scrubs your back and washes your hair as you shave and handle the rest. During this time, you think about your next course of action. You think that foremost you should assess the situation outside. If nobody has tried to breach the house by now, it's doubtful they'll suddenly get a wild hare up their asses about it now. Still, you don't think they'll be happy about what you did, and so defense is important. Second in your mind is perhaps finding some way or someone to help you contact Arco, or whatever might be left of him. Peace of mind would be nice.

You step out of the bath with Helda and dry off, then change into a clean robe, since Helda wants to clean up your clothes before you stink up the bed. Helda asks if you want to head back to the room after she starts the soak.

You apologize to Helda, telling her that you want to make sure everything is set to rights before you relax. She seems to understand, and places a kiss on your cheek for luck. You Step up to the top of the mesa, and look out over the edge. The camp is cleared out. The tents that you left intact are gone, and the ashes are long since scattered. You Step down to the tunnel. All clear. It seems for now you are safe to let your guard down, but it is probably best to figure out a way to either secure the mesa, or pick up stakes and find somewhere else to hide out. You Mend the tunnel, a tiring feat but simple enough, and then Step back into the lab to begin studying.

Because I've been a dick and not told you anything this whole time, and since these are the final level of spells, I'll let you guys know ahead of time. Unless you don't want to know, in which case don't read.

Atom: You can split a single atom in an object you touch. You can set a time, and when that time is up, that object will explode with incredible force.

Fear: Casting this spell will cause all who see you to feel dread. Anyone who makes eye contact with you will be unable to oppose your will, and will follow any orders you give, though not always without remorse or hesitation.

Morph: You can transform any living creature into any inanimate object you know by sight. This spell wears off when you die, or you chose to release it.

Flower: Through touch, you can take the youth and vigor from a person. For every ten years you take from someone, you get one back.

Starlight: You can summon a circle anywhere you can see. This circle will emit a beam of white energy that destroys all living matter it touches, but nothing else. Only two circles may be active at once.
>>

Atom, i guess.
>>
>>29645198
ATOM IS BROKEN.

We can set one atom to split.

We can do this THOUSANDS TIMES, MILLIONS OF TIMES and put the timer for a year.

Then put the bomb as a jar or brick or even a coin. Then just throw it in a grave yard near the main city and watch the death.

Dude, it a time bomb on a the damage of a nuke while having the size of an atom.

one tiny sand grain got enough atoms that if we split all the atom in that grain of sand, we can destroy the world....or glass a continent.
>>
>>29645403
It's not an actual nuclear explosion. Just think of it as proportional weight in dynamite.

>>29645341

One month after Arco's passing, you step out of the lab and into the dining room. Helda has already prepared potatoes and sausage for dinner. She asks how your studies are going, and you tell her that you think you've learned all you can from Arco's books. She seems happy that you might spend more time out of the lab now, and you smile at each other. As you eat, you hear something set off the alarm outside. Helda notices you react, and asks what's going on.

As you speak, you remove a wad of paper from your pocket. A page torn out of a notebook to make the grocery list last week. The soldiers don't seem to notice you fiddling with it. One of them steps up, half drawing his sword in anger.

"You killed Republic soldiers. Did you think we wouldn't come for you? You were an idiot to stay in the same place. Or perhaps it was you were too scared to run? Either way, we won't fall for your funny tricks. We have our own mages in the Republic. This armor protects us from your electric and fire spells. so you'd best give up now before we have to take a head back to the capitol."

You try to play it light, but they won't buy it. They are clearly out for blood. You begin tossing the paper ball back and forth, toying with them. You can see it grating on their nerves. You tell them that you'll come to the Republic when you're good and ready, and give them 5 seconds to clear out. They laugh. You Atom the ball, and toss it into the air in front of the nearest one, then Step back to the top of the mesa. You close your eyes and listen as a loud boom echoes throughout the flat desert. Screams follow, along with horses and hooves beating a retreat. You wait a minute to cool off, the Step back down. The floor is covered in red mist. There are chunks of armor, men and horse lying about. Luckily, one of them seemed to get off with little more than two liquified legs. You approach him, as he begs you for mercy.

You taunt him, using his shirt to wipe the blood off of your boot. You reach down and put his legs to rights. Red mist gathers from all around, combining into a pair of working legs. He seems amazed and horrified. You tell him not to move, or you'll make the same thing happen to one of the hairs on his head. He freezes solid.

Through shaking words and coughs, he spills all of the information displayed on his records.

"I'm from Dos Palmas, in the Republic. My wife is a milk maid. I enlisted because the Republic offers support to soldiers even after they leave service. They pay us enough to get by even if we can't find work, and it's the only way to get into political office. That's why everyone joins." You apply a bit more pressure with your foot and ask about the mages enlisted in the Republic army. "Agh! They aren't too good! They only know a few spells each. Just enough to get by. They mostly use them to brew potions and tonics for the enlisted. The most any of them can do is shoot lightning, like you! I swear that's all I know!"

You Drag him to his home. The city around you as you reappear is quite developed, full of tall buildings, trees, fountains and people roaming about. The house he resides in is not very impressive, but to be fair you're a bit biased. You tell him to kneel by your feet and remain there until commanded. He doesn't move. You knock on the door and await a response. A woman holding a small baby answers, likely his wife by the shock on her face when she sees him barefoot and frightened. You inform the woman that you have returned her missing dog, and command him to crawl back into his home. He does so, looking ashamed as he crosses his own threshold on hands and knees. You tell them your name, and your place of residence, and to tell everyone they know. You also tell them that if you are ever crossed again, you won't be as kind as you were this time. The two of them, struck with fear, simply retreat back into the house, away from you. You smile and wave, then Step back home to prepare for what lies ahead.
