You have emerged from your ordeal in the pyramid's catacombs, bloody and broken but no longer cursed. The Great Priests have their servants quickly remove the makeshift defenses they'd set in place to kill whatever came up from the lower levels and prepare a small feast to welcome you back. After you have yourself patched up by Nakurtum, you join them in the large feast hall, which has been seeing more use in the past few months than it has in a long time.

Ninlil is here, and so is Rabi-Tammuz and a weary-looking Nergal-Edir, but Tabni-Ninsun is missing, probably still tending to her father. It also just doesn't seem like a proper feast without Soul-of-Lightning here. There's an uncomfortable quiet in the room as people eat goat and sip wine.

> Break the silence. Tell the whole story of your creepy ghost fight. Not like it's anything to be ashamed of.
> Change the subject. Maybe ask Ninlil when she thinks you'll be done with the rebuilding project
> Who needs talk? You're famished. Just gorge on goat, preferably cooked goat.

Trying to talk will probably make this awkward silence longer. We should just eat and nap, we've killed a lot of shit today.
>>
>>29630313
this isn't the feast we're disenchanting the fake king in, right?
Let's talk to ninlil about the building. Also ask if she's doing any other kinds of training- learning to read, combat, etcetera. We do a lot of that stuff.

While Nakurtum was cleaning your wounds, you asked her about the soldier she saved back outside Turtak. She nods in remembrance. "Oh yeah... He was still breathing when I left him. After that I just got stuck in the city and lost track of him. Maybe the petty-wizards finished the job. Or maybe they, you know, 'finished the job.'"

You look over at Ninlil, who has to sit her lin half down on the floor and bend down whenever she wants some goat, due to her lack of claws. "So, Ninlil, what kinds of stuff do they have you learning? Doesn't seem like I ever see you around."

Ninlil takes a moment to swallow before answering. She leans in close and uses her indoor voice. "they're trying to get me to learn to read and stuff. i won't have any of it. they want to make me a snob like them. they want to make me someone my family won't recognize. i'm still a mason - i'm just a mason who fights monsters sometimes now. i'm still me."

"Uh... Did you perhaps yell at her and tell her to stay away? It might have worked." You ask Ninlil.
"maybe... it was something like that. i was still pretty moody after changing," she answers.

You arrange to go out to the markets with Ninlil. You can get more cloth for Rabi-Tammuz to work with, and you can even introduce her to the closest thing you have to a family back at te poorhouse.

Since he's eating here with you, you take a moment to wipe the grease off your lips and approach the Sand Priest. He grins. "Ah, dear Hunzuu. How can I help the Savior of the City?"

"I told you about how we're going to invite the fake king back here so we can expose him."

"Indeed you did! We will have to see whether he accepts. That will show how much of his mind he has lost."

"I was wondering, what might happen if we just leave the illusion on him?"

"If he's come to believe it, then he will continue to do so even after the spell fades. And being confronted with evidence to the contrary will only make him more unstable. Why, are you thinking that I should refresh the spell instead of bringing it down? Was the previous king really that bad?" He smirks. "What do you know about him?"

You do not ask for healing from the Blood Priest, and he does not seem to offer it. He looks busy discussing business matters with the Rain Priest.

You retire from the feast and sneak Mr. Clicks a honeyed locust. You feel a small twinge of guilt when you realize that if you'd died in the catacombs, Mr. Clicks would be orphaned. You want to be a better mother to Mr. Clicks than your own mother was to you. Proud of your discovery, you explain it to Ninlil. She answers, "oh, yeah, i'd do that all the time. every kid with two parents learns that trick." That makes you a little sad. But at least you have a day of relative peace and quiet, some disposable wealth, and a friend by your side.

The next day, you find Ninlil and ask Dadanum and the guards to open the gates from the pyramid out into the city. At this point each guard either respects or fears you too much to refuse such reasonable requests. You've asked the Gold Priest for some walking-around money. You've learned the trick of never asking the same priest twice in a row when you need some small material favor, so each one doesn't know what the others are giving you.

You spend some time just looking around and politely navigating the crowds of interested onlookers. As usual, some of them have questions or pleas to shout out to you: "Lady Scorpion, when are we gong to hang the prince of Turtak? I want revenge for my husband!" "Lady Scorpion, will there still be a famine?" "Lady Scorpion, is it true that more cities are spawning monsters?" "Lady Scorpion, do me the honor of selling a cup of your poison!" Ignoring then, you bend down to a market stall and buy some fresh figs to see if your scorpion body will tolerate them. You also find a small bundle of whole dried scorpions for sale, for what purpose you cannot guess. No live scorpions are for sale that you can see, and that's probably for the best.

You get all excited when you see the place where you bought black cloth before. "Ooh! Ninlil, let's make you a dress! It'll be amazing!"
Ninlil is hesitant. "what... like a fancy dress? i don't think i want to. i'll just wear something simple."

You find some street vendors selling pieces of goat on a stick - or at least you hope it's goat. But whatever, you've eaten raw giant maggot, so it's all uphill from there. A boy sells some to you and Ninlil and asks you to bless him.

You and Ninlil explore the streets. Some territory Ninlil knows better than you, and sometimes it's the other way around, so you take turns leading each other around and showing off your favorite landmarks.

Suddenly, you heard the sounds of a struggle in the second floor of a building. A man is propelled backward out of a window and crashes through an awning to the ground. The front door is just barely big enough for you or Ninlil to squeeze through.

You ask the fallen man what's going on. His mouth is bleeding, and his leg might be broken, but he points up to the window as he untangles himself from the awning. "Mm mnnnphtmmpt!"

You say as you lay down your bundle, "Wait here, Ninlil, and catch anyone else who comes out. I'm going in there."
"okay..."

As you squeeze through the doorway and try to navigate a hallway that clearly wasn't made for giant scorpions, you hear more sounds of things falling over and breaking upstairs. Ninlil Roars to them, "HEY!!! YOU UP THERE! STOP FIGHTING AND GET OUT HERE RIGHT NOW!!!"

So, as you're crawling up the stairs, you intercept some bruised, red-eyed men coming down.

You wave to them with a hand and a claw at the same time. "Hi! My name's Hunzuu, what's yours?"

They immediately turn tail and flee back up the stairs in terror as you withdraw. Ninlil sees them in the window again and roars back to them. "HEY!!! WHAT DID I JUST SAY?! GET OUT HERE!"

"NOW!!!"

Two of them try the stairs again and make it out successfully. The third one drops himself down from the window and falls to the hard ground. They all look rather drunk.

You fold your arms. You try to fold your claws, but it doesn't quite work. "Now, what's all this about? Why were you fighting in my city?"

The men immediately start pointing fingers and accusing each other. The one who had a pot broken over his back, if the cuts in his flesh are any indication, points to the one who was pushed out a window. "When that one drinks, he tells lies and starts fights! He tried to put a curse on me!"
The man who dropped himself out the window chimes in. "But only because you insulted the king. You were both wrong! You're always wrong."
The one with the broken teeth crawls toward your bundle to inspect it. Maybe he thinks there's more alcohol in there.

Meluku and the other children gradually peek out from their hiding places to inspect Ninlil. There's a six-year-old that you don't recognize among the younger children. Must be newly orphaned. Life sucks sometimes.

You ask their newest nursemaid, the one sent by the Footmen, if you've heard anything about their new commander, Gemet. She nods, recognizing the name. "Gemet? Yeah, I suppose he'd be next in line now that the old man finally got his throat cut. He's all right. When he was a recruit, he complained that someone scratched his good shield, and ever since people have called him vain. He might do a good job, though. Can read, comes from a good family. Doesn't hold grudges like the old man. He still has a dark streak, though. Too much disrespect will do that to you."

"Have you heard anything from Ettu? Is her marriage a happy one?"

"Haven't heard anything. So I guess no news is good news."

You look back to see that some of the braver children are petting Ninlil's golden fur and poking at her paws to try to make her retractable claws come out. She protests in a whisper, "hey, that doesn't feel so good..."

You decide to stick to light work until the horrible gouges on your back close up. The next day, when you and Ninlil go back to helping rebuild the temple to Shamash, you carry only light loads in your claws - or loads you consider to be light, anyway. You resolve to learn to read as quickly as possible, receiving lessons both from the Rain Priest and from Tabni-Ninsun's eunuchs, and bringing Ninlil along with you each time.

After you're done cleaning yourself up from work at the temple, you hear that the king has agreed to come to the Pyramid to feast again the next day. You wear your best black dress, the one with the long train that lies atop your scorpion half. It always makes you feel very grown-up. You add some jewelry to go with it - except your crown. That seems like it'd be a bad idea.

Left to their own devices, Nakurtum shows up in polished bronze armor, leaning on her favorite giant axe while awaiting the king. NinlilWears the dress she was first given upon transformation - a plain white affair made for a human woman. She keeps her distance behind a mass of guards and servants, as though she really were still just a humble mason. So the audience entertaining the "king" as he ascends the great stairs into the pyramid is still a monster mash - just sort of a mismatched monster mash.

The king looks quite opulent in his jeweled bronze armor, and he's all smiles and courtesy as he goes with his large contingent of guards into the hall of shrines. You pray to Ninurta that he'll be able to step down gracefully.

The feast hall is arranged so that you and Ninlil have a special Monsters' Table set aside from the king and all the other humans. Thankfully, Nergal-Edir has more people than usual to assist him in serving the extravagant feast afterward. The poor hunchback has kind of been run ragged lately. As you wait for the king to be offered a portion of every dish before waving it away to be passed on, you overhear some acolytes gossiping with the king's retainers about how Ligish still doesn't have control over the dig site, which explains why new relics haven't been coming in for a few days. Either Turtak or some other power has driven away the contingent of guards and Archers that were holding it for Ligish. There's talk among the Charioteers and the priests alike about looking for more ruins, but nobody's entirely sure where to look.

The king carves off a little meat from a large pile of roasted goat legs that was probably intended for you and Ninlil, then waves it away. The Sand Priest is the one to pass it back to the monsters' table. He looks at you slyly, then back at the king. "Now? Men are at their weakest when they're eating or fucking."

"You know best. Want me to guard the exits?"
"If you would. Discreetly."

You arise and head toward the archway leading to the ramp to the ritual chamber and the other rooms on this level. It's hard to skitter around some of the feasters, but everyone assumes you mean no harm. You're Savior of the City, after all.

You see the Sand Priest take a small handful of something out of an inner pocket of his robes and approach the other side of the king's table. He bows. "Your Majesty, it is always an honor to receive you. I would like to repay the debt we owe you from the last time you came to pray here."

The king looks like he's not sure what the Sand Priest means, but has decided to politely fake his way through it. "Oh! Yes, of course. No need, though. Men as important and blessed as we don't need to count what we owe each other, though. We can simply call it an exchange of gifts."

"Then here is my gift to you..." The Sand Priest opens his hand and blows black sand at the king. Immediately panic breaks out. One side's guards try to get past the other side's guards. Weapons are drawn. The king's kingly appearance melts away to reveal a more angular face with no beard. He shouts in outrage. "What is this insult? We're getting out of here!"

You climb over a table, knocking it over as you go, to get into the middle of the room. You let out a sharp, stinging hiss that echoes through half the pyramid. "STOP!!! This king is an impostor. We made him to lead our city in the war, but now he's forgotten!"

The "king" feels at his face and his missing beard. "Lies! This face is the illusion! You won't be taken in by this scheming villain! Men, seize him!"

"Think of his change of character! He went from being shut in to demanding control of everything. He dismissed all his most trusted advisors!" Few in the room seem like they're able to argue that the king has gotten a lot bolder and more public since he went out on the march.

this says it all really. No king would ever be asked to step down. They can't. Kings are permanant until dead. And this king has no heirs. You know this is true.

Tell him that if he realises the truth, then he doesn't have to be locked in a dungeon or executes.

Hey OP, how do you feel about modern-ethical suggestions?

I've been trying to keep in more period ethics, cutting hands off thieves and killing and slavery and such, but I know that games/players myself included often try to play much more 'forgive and imprison and re-educate' style things.
I'm not wordsing this particularly well, I don't think.

Most of the guards lower their weapons. They have to admit that your side of the story would explain a lot. You call the Sand Priest forward again to explain how his magic works and what might be done about it now.

When he realizes that most of the room is against him, the man dressed as the king gets up and draws his sword, then tries to run out of the room.

With an expertly timed swipe of your claw, you catch the fleeing man by his belt and raise him up into the air. "The real king is in a safe location. Until he comes back, we have to hold this man in our dungeons. Bring in Charioteers who may recognize him. You may also bring in magicians of your own to make sure he has no more illusions on him."

The room is tense - everyone was almost certain that a fight would break out, and Ninlil has even bared her dagger-sized claws - but gradually a consensus builds among the king's retainers. "Just treat him well," one of them says. "We have to make sure what's going on." You promise that no harm will come to him.

As you carry the flailing, protesting man to the dungeons, the Sand Priest follows and answers your questions. "Recalling the truth after you've come to believe a lie is difficult but possible. This is true with or without magic. It happened to me a few times. We must simply confront him with evidence of his former self. Either he will survive the trauma and remember everything, or he will go utterly mad. We'll just have to see which." He says it like he's relishing the mystery of what will happen.

Iltani looks very pleased to see you. "Oh, what's this? Company? You know, I've held back from testing my strength against these bars, but if he does something bad, can I break out and kill him? I haven't killed someone in... well, it's hard to measure time down here, but it's been a long time."

"No," you scold Iltani. "This is a test. No more killing."

"Awwwww, but you kill people all the time!"

"You abused your killing privileges. You only get to kill people again if you're very, very, VERY good."

Iltani rolls her eyes. "If I wasn't mad already, being down here would be enough to make anyone mad... Well, hello, flailing man. I'm Iltani. Amuse me!"
