YOU ARE LOLI,

You were posing for the occupants of Skadovsk when Erec showed up alive, yelling at you for leaving him for dead before storming off to see the Doc. Beard doesn't seem to think it's an issue, and carried on business with you as usual.
"Right, well with that interruption out the way... I've got all the snaps I think I'll need. Now, keep that on for a day while I try and get the next set lined up. A question first, though, which color would you prefer?"

You think for a moment, then "Purple!", you chirp at him.

He nods, indicating that this conversation is over. Well, you now not only have more cash than ever before, you also have a means to get more should you need it, without having to risk your life!

You hop away from Beard, grabbing your stuff from under the stairs and shoving everything into your backpack before heading up to see the Doc.

As soon as you appear in the doorway, you're bowled to the ground by an over-sized ball of fur as Doggy greets you with a bark and a vigorous face-licking. You giggle as you try and

Doc's staring at you with a raised eyebrow, but as soon as you make eye contact, he shrugs and looks back to his work, stitching up a gaping hole in the side of a patient's torso. He hisses as Doc jabs with the needle, then nods to you in greeting. "Hey there. You're Giltinė, right? I wanna thank you. Can't imagine going through something like this without any painkillers."

"Quit moving," Doc mutters, as he finishes off stitching the wound closed and tying off the thread. "There. That'll be two hundred fifty for the drugs and a hundred for labor." The man hands over a wad of cash, thanks him, then pulls a shirt back on and makes his way out of the room. Doc finally gives you his full attention. "One of the new guys brought the supplies in for me. Said you did most of the work. I would thank you for this too, but I could've done the job just fine without the drugs. It's more for his sake than mine. Plus, you were paying off a favor."

>Anything to say?
>>
>>29705281
"is doggy fine now?"
>>
>>29705312
"Are you seriously going to chat away like this while I'm freakin' bleeding out over here?!" Erec's voice behind you gives you a start, you whip around to see him sitting in a metal chair in the corner behind the door.

"I said wait your turn, so shut up and wait your turn." Doc doesn't even look at the poor guy. "I'd recommend him staying put, but eh," he shrugs, "he's probably in better shape than you. Not that I can tell. Not a damn vet. Take him if you want."
>>
>>29705281
The ambushers clearly knew that we, specifically, would be on this job. That's suspicious. We need to ask him who knew about that.
>>
>>29704936
At least put quest in the title so we can filter this.
>>
>>29705414
Yeah, that actually seems smart. We should ask around about rumors in the bar.
And if they don't know any hits on us, maybe they know one on somebody else. A little extra cash never hurt.
>>
>>29705281
We need to tell him that the ambush was planned for us and say sorry for getting everyone killed and using some of the medical stuff. Shit's hard being Loli.

>>29705371
Well pay off the guy's bill in advance or something. It is sort of our fault he's hurt like he is. And without equipment anymore. I don't like him but decency says we owe him.

Please accept my sincere apologies, Anon.
>>
>>29705465
Yea, we've apparently got money, so we can be nice, I guess, even though he's not being very nice at all, blaming us for his own failings. I mean, WE have had much worse and we didn't whine about it as badly as he is.

I'd also ask around about Vas' father, but it occurs to me that the only thing we know about him is that he has a daughter. Presumably. We should ask Vas next time.
>>
We should also ask Beard where we can keep Doggy if we're going to stick around or visit in the future.

>>29705494
We left him for dead when he just had (presumably) a concussion then looted his body. It was a pretty shit thing to do however you want to slice it. We should've at least made sure our comrades really were dead if we could've, and we could've.

If you want to split hairs then let's buy him a rifle and gear instead.
>>
>>29705591
If that's the case, do we even know how to see if someone's dead? Let's ask Doc.
>>
>>29705591
>We left him for dead
Shouldn't have got shot. Much higher chance to be left for dead than saved, after all we are in the Zone.
>If you want to split hairs then let's buy him a rifle and gear instead.
This I can support.
>>
>>29705591
We still haven't figured out how he even knows we looted him. I mean he'd have to have been conscious to know that, but if we was conscious, he could've said something or moved or done pretty much anything to indicate he was alive.
>>
>>29705619
You know I didn't even consider that. We really should ask Doc. I don't blame the guy for being upset but come on, we're like twelve.

>>29705669
I think he just made a logical guess and we didn't deny it.
>>
>>29705414
"The pick-up... we got ambushed! Almost everyone got killed!" Erec grumbles in the corner. "They... they seemed to be aiming for me. Do you know anything about it?"

Doc is silent for a long moment. "An ambush targeting you specifically? Impossible... You were a last-minute addition to the team. Don't believe it."

"Well, they did!" you insist, "It happened! Did you at least maybe hear a rumor around the bar? Maybe someone that doesn't like me?"

"Some-" Doc's face splits into a huge grin as he starts to laugh at you, "someone who doesn't like you?? Try the entire bloody Zone!" He cackles for a while more, before subsiding into a smirk. "Sorry, can't help you with that."

Your face falls at the lack of information, but it can't really be helped. You make a half-hearted apology to him about the fact that you used some of the medical supplies to not die on your way back, and he shrugs at you.

>>29705669
A thought strikes you, and you turn your attention to Erec. "How did you even know I looted you!?"
A dark look crosses his face, and he gestures at your backpack. The zipper on the front pocket is slightly open, and one of the two remaining chocolate bars you took from him is hanging out of the pack. "Oh..."
>>
>>29705697
There's something beautiful about that. Giltinè, Death Herself, can't tell the difference between the dead and the living.
>>
>>29705732
"What? You would have given us that Chocolate anyway."
>>
>>29705732
...We should give him back his chocolate. I hope it was the Ukrainian stuff.
>>
>>29705619
You turn back to Doc. "Hey, how do I tell if someone's dead or just faking?"

He snorts at this, while Erec just glares at you. "Movement, reactions, breathing, pulse. If they're moving about, or react if you kick them, they're probably alive. They can fake that, though. Breathing's the one to tell if they're just unconscious or dead. If they ain't breathing, or you can't tell, place two fingers..." he takes your fingers and places them on his neck "here, and press hard. Feel it? Can't fake that."

You smile, "thanks that's actually really easy!"

>>

>>29705826
You stare at Erec, pulling a kicked puppy expression, . "You mean... you wouldn't have let me have the chocolate? Well, fine. *sniff* You can have it back then." You stare at your feet as you meekly hold the bars towards him.

"Ah jeez, keep the damn chocolate! I don't care."

"NO! Take it!" You throw the chocolate back at him. It was Ukrainian, anyway. Not like you were going to eat it.

You're pretty sure you're done here, so you head back to the bar. Doggy doesn't even need prompting to stick close behind you. The bar's patrons give him a few wary glances as he pads up to the bar beside you, but no-one makes any further movement.

As you approach, Beard places the glass he was cleaning away on a shelf, before pulling another glass to start cleaning.
"Hey Beard. I sort of need some things. Can you help me out?"
He nods passively, "sure. If it's here, it's for sale. I'll also buy a lot of the stuff you don't need anymore. What sort of stuff are you looking to get, or get rid of?"

He's somehow managed to procure two perfectly fitting cosplay outfits when we probably don't even know our own measurements. If he can do that, he can also procure gear with body armor, handy pockets and all that stuff for us. Or just make the next outfit he has coming in include that stuff. Otherwise, we may have to refuse doing any more of those jobs if it's just going to get us killed...

have him ID the food if possible. Also buy a knife and some rations (preferably ones that won't spoil).

If the vividred outfit doesn't get shredded like the Seibah one did, it should serve pretty well for later - sturdy boots, a good belt to hang stuff on, and doesn't restrict our movement much.

Something like that would be decent. Or just tactical cosplay armor, if the fanservice must flow.

"Uhh... guns and stuff? They seem pretty important right now."

Without another thought, Beard has reached under the bar to pull a selection of items for you. "Alright, well with your stature, I'm assuming you want the smaller stuff? There's some bigger items in stock here, so if you want to see them, just say so."

Most of the choices looks pretty familiar to you: a couple of pistols of different shapes and sizes. One looks really western and professional, the next is a revolver. The third, you'd swear it was some sort of hand cannon.
There's also an empty pistol holster; it doesn't look like it matches any of the weapons on display properly, but they would definitely stay in it just fine.
There's also one of those automatic pistols that you've seen in the gangster movies, the "Oozies", as well as one of the really short rifle-things that you used to have.

Beard quickly runs through the choices and gives a price to each. He also mentions that he'll throw in a healthy amount of ammunition for each for an extra fifty for each gun.

As you're looking at the selection, you absently reach into your pack and pull out the can of food that's been in there since... forever. "Want to buy this from me?"

"What's in it and how old it is?"

"Don't know."

"Hmm. I'll give you thirty for it.

[ ]American pistol [300]
And a second one as a backup. It's the only weapon that makes sense.
Revolvers are dumb, there's a reason they're outdated. Loli can't handle recoil well so the cannon and uzi are out. The rifle seems like a bad idea because we'll just lose it probably.

Two things of ammo too I guess.
>>
>>29706498
>[ ]Revolver [500]
Like in the westerns we are apparently a fan of. Also we should probably not spend too much money on the gun since we seem to lose our guns all the time. Besides, we are bound to kill someone with a flashy gun sooner or later. Why buy when we can just loot.

"Okay. Uhm, I suppose I also need stuff that's gonna help me survive longer, right?"

"Heh. Pretty vague. I'll see what I've got..."

He stashes the selection of guns and walks to the very back shelves of his stores to rummage around for a few minutes. When he returns, he has rather a large selection of items for you.

It's an impressive set. Everything from helmets and body armor to torches to bandages and medical kits. Again, he goes through the list and gives you some numbers.

"Hey, Beard... These costumes you've been getting for me..." He raises an eyebrow, waiting for you to finish the question. "Could you get me some, you know, normal stuff? Just in my size? Or at least make the costumes practical?"

"To answer your first question: No. It's not profitable to set up a supplier for just one client. Sorry. I'm nice, but not that nice. At least your costumes are giving me another form of income."
"The second question, though? Hrrrrm. It's a completely customized request already. If you don't mind a drop in the payout, I can definitely get some armor woven into the inside of the fabric, no problem. I'll have tomorrow's suit armored up for you. I'll also see about making sure the other parts of it are... practical."

"Kay, well until then..." you take off your holed vest and hand it to him. "I'll trade you this one for that one," you gesture at the one on the table. "I'll also give you..." you unload your backpack onto the bar and hand him your looted pistol, all its ammunition, your broken torch and your spare clothing, "all of this. Then I'll take... this thing and this and this." You pick up the torch, first aid kit and a few cans of food.

Beard frowns at you in slight annoyance, before pulling a calculator from his back pocket, tapping in what you took and inspecting the things you gave him. He takes a long moment looking at the pistol you gave him, before tapping in a few more numbers.

You take a long moment considering the best way to squeeze the information you need from these men. Most of the crowd seemed to enjoy it when you pulled what you thought of as suggestive poses when you were letting them take pictures, but you're not sure you're comfortable with trying anything more than that. You opt instead for a tactic you know has worked pretty well in the past.

You pick a table near the back, a handful of veterans quietly drinking. One of them is the guy who first took your picture. You slide up behind them, then plomp your head down onto the table, staring up into his eyes.

The entire table freezes at your arrival. The man across from you clutches his chest with a vice-like grip, making a pained groan, before collapsing to the floor. His friend drops his drink. He breaks his gaze from you to stare at the smashed glass on the floor, curses quietly, then leaves for the bar.
The veteran opens and closes his mouth several times, seemingly trying to remember how words work.
Oops. Too powerful? Well, you can always try again at the next table.

You decide to try your luck with another target and look around the room. In the corner nearest the door, a couple of shady-looking guys are flanking a bald man in a trenchcoat sat in the only chair in the bar. You skip over to him, and plonk yourself down on his lap before he can react. "Ne, ne, Onii-chan~!"

Both his guards quickly reach to pull you away, but the man meets your gaze and quickly waves them away. You put both hands in your lap and start freely swinging your legs.

"Well now, to what do I owe this pleasure, my girl?" His toothy grin looks like it wants to swallow you whole.

You blink twice at him before continuing. "Well, some stuff happened, see, and I really was hoping you would help? It's about the job that happened last night."

His grin narrows somewhat as he gets your meaning. You don't like this type of grin. "Ah, so you were... I don't know what happened, and I'm not really concerned. It's not to my profit to know. What I can tell you is that it certainly wasn't any of my boys at all, I give you my word." He lays one hand on your head, pushing you cap to one side so as to gently ruffle your hair.
"Sadly, all I can give you is that I know someone sent a message as you and your team were leaving the bar."

"I could give you information on this person. For a price. Or a favor..." Yep, you definitely don't like this type of grin.

He tries to let go of your hand after you steady yourself, but you don't let go.
"Nu-uh! Hold my hand all the way there? Pwease?"
His breath catches, let out in a short grunt. He nods once, and you beam at him as he leads you out of the bar.

As soon as you're outside, you start to skip happily along. You keep your pace as matched as you can to his as he picks his up to keep up with you. Interestingly, he starts to lead you in a direction you have yet to explore: upstream of Skadovsk. There's a dried estuary to your left, and another little ship wreck in a pond to the right side of the river. Dead ahead, though, you can see a large mound of cracked and dried earth reaching up out of the swampland around it. "That's where we're going?" He grunts once at you. You're not sure if it was a yes or no, but continue your slow skip in that direction.

It only takes you a few minutes to reach the mound, and as you get closer, you can hear a dull roaring sound from ahead. There's also an odd shimmering haze over the entire mound.

"Aright. This' far as I go," your guide informs you, stopping dead in his tracks and nearly yanking you off your feet as you fail to adjust your speed accordingly.

"Eh? What do you mean?"

"This'z the Boiler. If he's here, you gotta fetch 'im."

Well... you suppose you need to find this Alexei guy, if he's here.

At the very center of the mound is a... slightly disturbing sight. You assumed it was just part of the scenery first, until you really looked at it. A human form, its back to you, lying in a fetal position. You didn't realize what it was due to the fact that the entire form is blackened and charred. One of its feet is sticking out over the edge of one of the deep fissures snaking its way over the mound, and is still smoldering. As you watch, the end of its boot finishes burning, and crumbles away into ash. The toes underneath are swollen and reddened, but haven't started to burn proper just yet. The straps on the figure's pack have started to burn through, too, but the pack itself is in relatively good shape.

Wordlessly, you gesture at the figure to Sergei. "Huh. S'that's where 'e got to. Wuz wond'rin' why e'd bin out so long. Yup, that's Alexei aright."

So... pretty much no chance of you interrogating him, then...

[ ]Try to retrieve him. You never know, he might still be alive enough to answer you.
[ ]Try to retrieve his pack. It might have something you could use in it.

>>

>>
>>29709585
"We gotta get him out of there!" you exclaim to Sergei, who snorts derisively at you. "No, seriously," you argue, "he might be my only lead!"

Sergei faces you, his wide eyes blank behind his mask. "Look, you do what ya wanna do. I'm stayin' right 'ere, where I ain't dead."

No help from him. Whatever. You don't have much time. You step up to the base of the mound, near one of the strips of earth that lead straight to the figure between the fissures. A wave of extreme heat presses against you, almost physically pushing you back.

You take a few paces to either side, and feel the heat seems to be emanating from inside one of the holes. You move a little closer to it, against the heatwave, and your detector suddenly buzzes angrily at you.
If you go in, you definitely won't have long in there with this heat. And it'll probably get worse further in.

[ ]Circle around the area, probe it for detector readings.
[ ]Jump over the fissures, shortest route to the figure.
[ ]Walk along the earthen strut, along solid ground.
[ ]Sprint along the earthen strut, get in and out.

Rolled 14

>>29709875

This guy has the right idea
>>
>>29709837
If your detector's buzzing, that means you don't want to go rushing into this place without knowing what you're doing. You decide to circle around the mound, carefully stepping around the struts and fissures, following the wall of searing heat. Your detector buzzes pretty loud and frequently whenever you get close to one of the fissures, so you can pretty much guarantee that stepping on or over one is a bad idea. Other than that, you get almost no readings.

When you get to the other side of the mound, you can see the face of the figure. As you come into its line of sight, you think you can see the faintest movement of its neck, as if trying to look at you. There's no other movement though, and it doesn't call for help so you're not sure.

You finish your circuit, and move yourself to the position the shortest distance away from the figure along one of the struts, at the edge of the heat wall.

[ ]Walk along the earthen strut, along solid ground.
[ ]Sprint along the earthen strut, get in and out.
>>
>>29710044
Get in get out. Sooner it's done, sooner we're safer.
>>
>>29710044
>[ ]Sprint along the earthen strut, get in and out.
He's about to die if he hasn't already. If we want to try to talk to him then we need to pull him out. If we only care about what's in his bag then we go cautiously.
>>
>>29710044
>[ ]Walk along the earthen strut, along solid ground.
>>
>>29710044
You physically and mentally ready yourself before sprinting along the shortest distance to the figure. As soon as you start climbing the mound, the heat pressure closes in around you, quickly snuffing your ability to breathe as heated air fills your lungs, searing deep in your chest. You can rapidly feel yourself suffocating as your push through to your objective.

[Pain Threshold!]

It's a good thing you've experienced suffocation recently, as you push the discomfort to the back of your mind as you force your way through the anomaly as fast as you can. The moment you reach the figure, you reach down and grab it under the armpits, heaving back and upwards as hard as you can. The body is somewhat lighter than you were expecting. Probably due to the fact that as you yank upwards, the thighs simply crumble into ash away from you.
Oh. That's not a good sign.

You heave backwards, fighting through both the exertion and the oppressive heat around you. It's a thankfully short trip back to the cool air at the bottom of the mound. As soon as you breach the fire wall, you check yourself over. Luckily, you seem to have moved fast enough that you don't have any actually heat injuries, other than a few minor scalds on the palms of your hands. Your clothes are also lacking any serious singing.

Your lead, though...
>>
>>29710308
...at least we got his pack, right?
>>
>>29710415
and then you realize after dragging him back that the straps broke all the way back there and you have to go get it
>>
>>29710308
Your lead is in worse shape than when you first saw him.
Besides missing his legs entirely, his lower torso is mostly burned away as well. The gas mask is melted so badly it seems to have melded into the flesh of his face, if there is any flesh left. His entire suit is a blackened ruin, barely even resembling protective clothing.

"Heh. Nice. Ya saved a stick of charcoal," Sergei mocks behind you.

You try to recall what Doc told you, and kick him once to no effect. You then try placing two finger under his chin and press hard. Nothing. Yep, he's dead.

You slump down onto your knees, ready to despair that your only lead got himself killed this fast, while Sergei sets about rummaging through the undamaged stuff in the corpse's pack. He tosses a few mundane items aside, lifts something shiny that he pockets for himself, then presents an undamaged electronic device. "'Ere, 'is PDA's just fine. Prolly got sommat in it at least." He flicks through a couple of recent entries in the man's message history, before handing the device to you. "There, s'prolly what you're after."

The message he hands you reads: "Objective mobile. Accompanying rookies. Target is the gas station."
A message, timestamped to be a few moments after you left Skadovsk with the rookie team, addressed simply to 'K.A.'
Well, at least the lead isn't dead just yet.
