------

You are Flying officer Julian Reber of the Royal Air Force. You became a Tactical Surface Fighter pilot in order to fight the BETA, the alien menace that threatens to extinguish human civilization, and because your ancestors made their living by fighting other people's wars until Switzerland made that kind of thing unconstitutional.

Your performance in your first major engagement was so spectacular that you've received a Distinguished Flying Cross. You spent the rest of the evening indulging in food, light alcohol and casual dating.

So you have no idea why you wake up feeling so godawful.

You crawl out of bed, check to confirm that your roommate is still soundly asleep, strip off your clothes and take a shower. The stream of hot water doesn't make you feel any better.

The ZEF-19 Excalibur, the ZK-21 Sangreal, December 24th, 2001... You have a general idea of why they're important. You know the European Union has decided to aggressively pursue the reclamation of the continent. You can guess that it has something to do with the Hives, because it can't really be about anything else. You know this kind of operation must meet certain deadlines in order to justify its funding and resources.

But you don't know what any of that has to do with you.

It probably doesn't even matter.

You're getting paid and you're winning. You've already proven that this isn't a loser's contract that so many mercenaries got stuck with in the past. Whatever needs to be done, you've apparently got just under three years left to do it. You just need to do keep doing your job, starting with the briefing you've got in two hours.

You dry yourself off and put on your uniform. You see Robinson is finally starting to wake up, but at this hour, there probably won't be any decent food left in the officer's mess by the time she's done cleaning up and getting dressed, especially when you consider how hung over she must be.

>Get breakfast for Robinson.

In between the tortured groans, Robinson very slowly crawls out of her bed.

"Ugh... what did I do last night," she asks.

"Drinking and molestation," you say. "Although, I'm not too sure about the order."

You carefully help her up and keep her steady until it looks like she can stand on her own.

"I'll get us breakfast while you're showering."

"Thanks..."

She starts getting undressed as you leave and head down to the officer's mess. Breakfast today is hash browns with bacon and a cup of coffee. The bacon is fake, and the coffee might as well be, but the potatoes are real, and that's about as much as you can hope for on the front lines.

You take a quick look around to make sure nobody's looking; health and sanitation codes are very clear that food isn't supposed to leave the mess and the logistics people hate it when cutlery and trays go missing. Then again, they wouldn't be able to hate it if it never happened.

Satisfied that no one's looking your way, you quickly dash down a hall and go back to your room with breakfast for two. Unfortunately, both your hands are busy, so the best you can do is kick the door a few times and hope Robinson is awake enough to open the door before the MPs walk by.

Fortunately, Robinson quickly opens the door and smiles as she sees you.

"Thank you! I don't think I can stomach synthetic toast right now."

She grabs one of the trays and sits on her bed to eat. She looks better than she did when you left her, but she still looks like she had a rough night.

"About last night," she says...

"Thanks, that means a lot to me." She smiles, but she looks... uncomfortable. Something else is bothering her and it's not the hangover.

"If something's bothering you, you might as well tell me about it," you say.

"Yeah, I guess. It's..." She hesitates for a moment and closes her eyes to gather her thoughts.

"My father was in the RAF, too," she says. "He survived a few battles, but... he never really came back. Whenever he was in a closed room, he'd act as if it was a cockpit. When he was out in the open, he'd feel as if he was surrounded by BETA. He just... couldn't feel safe anymore."

You nod slowly.

"I had a few instructors who told me something similar," you say. "For a lot of us, this war won't be over until the day we die, even if we outlive the BETA."

"That's what I thought, too," she says. "But after Calais... two whole battalions fucked up their beach landing, and we made it through to fight a thousand Laser and Heavy Laser-class BETA. We shouldn't have survived that, but we did, because of you. After that clusterfuck... I know I can be safe as long as you're there. I just wish my father had had someone he could rely on like that."

You try very hard not to choke on your coffee, and fail.

"Fine, fine," you say. "Just don't lower your guard. Bad things happen out in the field and I might not be around to help you out."

"No problem."

You both finish your breakfast and sneak your trays back into the mess before heading to your briefing.

>Elaine Robinson has unlocked Gunnery.

You take your assigned seat next to Elaine and wait for Group captain Hall to get the show started. You see a map of France projected on the screen behind him.

"All right, listen up," Hall says. "You must have all realized by now that the European Union is going after the Lyon Hive. We tried it once a few years ago with an orbital drop operation and it failed. This time, we're going to do it right."

The map behind him changes to display a dozen target markers, each located roughly 50 miles from Calais.

"Our first priority is to place a series of seismometers in the area surrounding Calais. Our satellites give us coverage of BETA movements above the surface, but we know the BETA also burrow underground and we don't want to take any chances. These seismometers will help us further secure our forward operating base at Calais from any unexpected attacks. We will also anchor weather balloons near the seismometers in order to bait any Laser-class BETAs. As long as the balloons are still flying, we know we won't have any Lasers to deal with.

"We will deploy in flights of four TSFs. Each flight will escort a truck carrying equipment and technicians. The technicians will deploy the equipment and you will return. Safety is your first priority, but you may engage the enemy at your discretion. Any questions?"

>Do you have any questions?
>>

>>
>>29712614

>>
>>29712614
>The technicians will deploy the equipment and you will return

>>
>>29712614

>>29712614
>We will also anchor weather balloons near the seismometers in order to bait any Laser-class BETAs. As long as the balloons are still flying, we know we won't have any Lasers to deal with.
...does this actually work? We know they don't level everything around them to the ground just out of instinct, after all.

I don't remember for sure off the top of my head whether the whole bit about how BETA prioritize the most complicated electronics whenever possible is part of common knowledge on BETA. But if it is, does this mean that the weather balloons are going to have some sort of complex computerized "bait" in order to entice them into attacking the balloons?
>>
>>29712814

I remember reading somewhere that the Laser classes even shoot down birds near to them. Just because they prioritize complicated electronics doesn't mean they aren't always shooting everything flying they can see.
>>
>>29712814
Oh shit, they're sending Game Boys out in the field.
>>
>>29712814
see
>>29712859
It probably would have complicated electronics anyway
>>
>>29712814
If it flies, it's shot down. They just prioritize technology and anything with a human inside.
>>
>>29712859
I don't know how their targeting protocols work, but given that the balloons are going to be tethered to the ground, that might lead them to categorizing them as just a tall, thin inanimate object, rather than something that is attempting to fly as well as it can but is being kept anchored in place.

That said, if they have altimeters or something in order to keep track of whether they're still aloft, that might very well be enough on its own, I suppose.
>>
>>29712814
Don't ask this, I don't want Julian to look anything less than a genius.
>>

>>29712614
You take a look at the strategic map and speak up.

"What kind of resistance can we expect?"

"According to our current satellite coverage, all mission objectives are clear within a radius of 50 miles," Hall says. "Within a radius of 100 miles, there are between 2,000 and 10,000 BETAs in the area, depending on the objective. However, they are spread out in smaller groups. The largest groups seem to be battalions of 500. Your CIC will inform you if the situation changes."

Someone from the Lancelot squadron raises their hand.

"How long should it take for each team to install the seismometers?"

"Unless there are problems, it should take less than one hour to install all the equipment," Hall says.

"What's the extraction plan if things go wrong?"

"You are. Anyone else?"

Someone from Gawain speaks up.

"Do we know if the weather balloons will actually do anything?"

"Not yet," Hall says, "but we equipped them with missile guidance systems to make them a more attractive target."

Hall waits for a moment until it's clear there are no more questions.

"All right, then," he says. "You leave in one hour. Dismissed."

The room clears out and everyone heads for their locker rooms.

You and Robinson get into your fortified suits. The slight tension you felt before the Calais operation is gone, replaced by a mix of confidence and nonchalance. This isn't a combat op and even if things go sideways, you should be able to handle it.

You both head to the hangars, which have been returned to their standard order and neatness, now that Wright is back in charge and no longer needs to lend it out to whoever's building the base in Calais.

You decide to follow Robinson to your Tornadoes. You're not sure where Wright is and it's entirely too early to greet her anyway.

You part with Robinson when you reach your TSF. It's the same Tornado you took to Calais, but it's had some thorough maintenance and repairs. The only downside is that your special modifications will have been switched off. You don't expect to need them for now, but you'll need to remember to talk to Wright about setting up permanent modifications. You don't want anyone else flying your Tornado anyway, so it's not like it would really matter all that much.

You connect your fortified suit to your TSF's controls and Pilot officer Vivian Knight appears in your HUD.

"Good morning, Arthur 3," she says.

"Good morning, Arthur Crown," you say. "So you'll be handling CIC for this mission?"

"Yes, sir," she says. "I have a real-time satellite image of the area, so I will inform you immediately if you have incoming hostiles and help you coordinate a defence."

You nod, reassured. This is the sort of mission that should help her build up some confidence.

Robinson leads your flight, the vanguard of Arthur squadron, to your carrier. The trip to Calais is a short one after that.

Work on the forward operating base has proceeded quickly. It's not luxurious, but the basic amenities are all there, from the command post to the medical clinic. The place is also surrounded by turrets, missile launchers, tanks, mechanized infantry troopers, and A-10Cs. If the BETA want to get this place back, they'll have to work for it.

Robinson guides you to the truck you'll be escorting. The only question is how to proceed.

"Arthur Crown, does it look like they're moving away from the AO?"

"Agreed," Robinson says. "We can split up our flight and leave someone behind to guard the truck, or we can commit everything and get this over with faster. We also need to decide if we want to focus on the Tanks, Grapplers or Destroyers, or if we just want to go for targets of opportunity."

Tanks are weaksauce, but will devour a TSF if they swarm it.

Destroyers are fast and almost impossible to kill from the front, but their back is exposed and they have trouble turning.

Grapplers have giant claws. They're somewhere in between the other two, mostly.

None of them have any range capabilities or anti-air, which puts you at a significant advantage.

Anyway, have 4 and 5 hold back and protect the trucks.

>>
>>29714505
If we're having anyone hold back, it should only be one person.

Having a full half of our combat crew dedicated to babysitting the truck when there might not even be any threat to it seems like a weird choice to make, especially considering that having fewer people assaulting the BETA we KNOW are here means it's more likely we are unsuccessful and someone will have to break off from guard duty to handle things regardless.

>>29714593
The seismometers are being placed to detect BETA traveling under the surface. They're all capable of underground movement to some extent, I believe, but I don't know if they require previously placed tunnels to do so.

I don't believe we have in-character knowledge of Carrier-class.
>>
>>29714593
BETA are not intelligent. And about specialized digger classes, all of them are actually miners
>>
>>29714649
It's a family tradition in the Kerbal family line, passed down through generations, to be redshirts.

Fine, fine. I'll change to just leave one of them behind. If they all get chomped, it's not my fault.

Would've said prioritize Grapplers, seeing as they're generally easier to dispatch than the Destroyers, but it probably works out alright regardless.

No sense in going out of our way to try and prioritize Destroyer-class if it's going to require us to displace ourselves to do so efficiently and we could be getting rid of equally deadly, but less troublesome BETA instead.
>>
>>29714784
No. That's retarded. Twins always work together, and separating them is bad - therefore, they can't be twins.

"Someone can stay behind with the truck while the rest of us clear the area, starting with the Destroyers," you say. "We don't want them charging for the truck."

"Sounds good," Robinson says. "Arthur 3 and 4, on me. We're going for the Destroyers. Arthur 5, stay with the truck. Arthur Crown, give us an update on the situation."

"Arthur Vanguard, this is Arthur Crown," Knight says. "No changes in the enemy formation. There do not appear to be any Lasers in the area."

"All right, move out while we have the advantage," Robinson says.

The BETAs turn towards you, but at this range, you have a significant advantage. The Destroyers quickly isolate themselves from the main force and you circle around them to shoot their exposed backs. Robinson shoots down an entire line of them in a single strafe, while you only kill four. However, your kills create an opening for Arthur 4, who guns down eight of them.

However, you're now between the Destroyers and the rest of the group. The Destroyers can't turn, so they can't flank you, but it's not a good position to be in. You're thankful for your air superiority.

Your second pass allows you to bring the number of Destroyers down to half what it was at the start at the battle. The Destroyers begin to turn towards you. One of them clips Robinson, but she holds steady. Between her and Arthur 4, who hasn't realized how precarious his position is, there are less than a score of Destroyers left.

"This is Arthur 3, moving to assist Arthur 4."

You quickly announce your change of target and spin towards the Grapplers and Tanks, opening fire with both your assault cannons.

Fortunately, the tanks have managed to outpace the Grapplers and they don't have the armor necessary to survive your onslaught. You gun down a quarter of the in an instant.

"Fuck!" Robinson swears through your comms. "I'm hit. Critical damage to the legs."

You immediately turn towards her.

Fortunately, she's able to kill the Destroyer that was on her and Arthur 4 smoothly strafes every single remaining destroyer.

Your position is not nearly as secure. The distraction allowed the Tanks to swarm you. You try to extract yourself, but it's too late; they're on you, and your Tornado's warning lights start flashing. You stay calm long enough to gun down some approaching Grapplers, but you still need to deal with the Tanks.

As much as you hate to think about it, you're in a pretty good position to kill some BETA. You just need to survive for the next few seconds.

"Arthur 3 to Arthur 2 and 4," you call out. "I'm swarmed. Repeat, I am swarmed. I can hold for a few seconds, but I need backup NOW!"

Robinson looks massively stressed in your comms, but the look in her eyes tells you she's not giving up.

"I've still got guns and engines," she says. "Just hold still."

"Arthur Vanguard, this is Arthur Crown," Knight says as she reappears on your communications display. "I have rescue teams on standby if necessary. I'm also arranging our firing solution."

Unlike Robinson, she doesn't even look stressed. You're not sure how to feel about that. Then again, she stopped looking after Arthur 4 to check on you, so she must be at least somewhat concerned.

Robinson and Arthur 4 raise their cannons towards your position.

Robinson barely has one leg to stand on, but she does what she can to stabilize herself using her engines and shoots the Tanks off your TSF in short controlled burst.

You immediately use the opportunity to take altitude and clear the swarm, bearing your guns down on the Grapplers. It empties your magazine, but your vantage point gives you a perfect angle. It's a massacre.

Meanwhile, Arthur 4 gets to work on the Tanks.

You reload your cannons and open fire. The remaining Tanks and Grapplers are completely open and there is absolutely nothing they can do to defend against it.

Once the corpses are done twitching, you settle down next to Robinson's TSF to prop it up while Arthur 4 surveys the area.

"Arthur Crown, this is Arthur 2," Robinson says. "The area of operation is clear."

"Arthur Vanguard, this is Arthur Crown," Knight answers. "The area of operation is confirmed clear. Now moving on with the mission."

Arthur 5 escorts the truck in and the engineers get to work. As estimated, it takes them under an hour to set up the seismometer and the balloon. Once they're finished and the status of the equipment is confirmed, your convoy heads back to Calais as quickly as possible.

Your TSF took more damage during than escort than it did against the Lasers, but the just goes to show you how dangerous Tanks can be in close quarters. Besides, if the Lasers had managed to do any damage, you probably would have died immediately.

A carrier brings you back to Dover and you keep supporting Robinson's Tornado until the tech crews can secure it.

Wright is waiting for you outside your TSF.

"Good afternoon, Flying officer," she says. Her expression is unreadable, but if she's anything at all like the average chief engineer, she's not going to be happy about the damage to your TSFs.

Further down the catwalk, you see Knight and Robinson talking. They seem to be in a good mood and they're your best way out of here if you want one.

>Get a hold of Robinson. You're both still alive!
>Get a hold of Knight. Congratulate her on a job well done.

"Good afternoon, Flight lieutenant," you say. "I imagine you would like to know more about the damage to my Tornado."

"Tank swarm," she says. "There will be some structural damage to the support beams, but the joints should be fine. I assure you, it won't be a problem."

"Ah... I'm glad to hear that them."

You have a look at the rest of your flight.

"I'd like to get the flight together for a victory celebration. Would you like to join us?"

"Certainly," Wright says. "In fact, I know just the place."

"All right, then." You turn over to Knight, Robinson and the Kerbal brothers. "Hey, everyone, how about a victory celebration?"

Your proposal is met with cheers, and a confused look from Knight, but Robinson quickly rallies her over to your side.

Wright and Knight are both waiting for you outside the locker rooms once you finish showering and getting changed. The chief engineer leads you to the back of the hangar, where the maintenance crews keep their lounge. And their private bar.

It seems the mechanics are using their skills to brew vodka. You have no idea who is responsible for this, but given the way Wright runs her hangar, you don't see how anyone else could possibly pull this off.

The Kerbal brothers sit down with their own maintenance crews, who are very grateful that they won't be doing any heavy maintenance.

Meanwhile you grab yourself a bottle and a few glasses and sit on a couch between Robinson and Knight.

You barely have time to process what happens next.
>>
>>29717862
Wright squeezes in next to Knight, which forces you to squeeze closer to Robinson. The position is uncomfortable for all three of you, until Robinson makes herself comfortable by sitting on your lap and throwing one arm around you.
Knight then decides to also get comfortable by turning towards you and sliding her arm behind the couch, which has the side-effect of pushing her breasts against your arm, although she doesn't seem to notice.

Wright tops the whole thing off by casually wrapping one arm around Knight and turning towards you as well. Then she winks at you.

You take the fastest shot of vodka you've ever had.

"Has anyone heard anything about the next mission?" You ask.

"Nothing yet," Knight says. "It'll probably be more scouting."

"Guerrilla-style thinning operations," Wright says. "Hall wants us ready for hit-and-run loadouts and maintenance."

You pour yourself another shot and distribute glasses to Robinson, Hall and Wright.

"In that case," you say, "to guerrilla warfare!"

The rest of the room joins your cheer.
