You are Logan Drey, the Void Knight.

Last time, you almost stuck your landing on a planet known as Dergrume. And after your leg started to squeak, you realized that you forgot to pack lube.
Forced to either sit around for someone to pass by or keep going despite the squeak, you decided to take a nap. And boy did you ever dream.
Awoken by your AI alerting you to the approach of a small caravan, you managed to buy passage to the next town.
Once there you met a girl with glowing hair, and got your wallet nicked. Luckily you still had enough to buy oil, which was a big deal.
After a while of searching you discovered the thief in the form of a young-ish snake-girl named Rose, and you were promptly assaulted by her friend with the GIANT FRIGGIN SWORD Thorn.
Given a chance to explain the situation, you got your money back and now Thorn is taking you to her friend Oz the Aklabran.

Walking once more through the streets of Hovum, you follow closely behind Thorn and Rose. Whistling a tune from a movie made more than 100 years ago.

The two in front of you look close, as they chat away about something you aren't particularly interested in. You might think they were sisters if they weren't obviously from two completely different species.

Thorn stands about as tall as you, with short, messy red hair. She wears simple, light armor with loose fitting clothes underneath. She doesn't look very big, but that's obviously just because of what she's wearing. You'd have to have some serious muscle to heft a sword THAT big.

Rose, in contrast is much shorter. Well, she's... longer. You're pretty sure that she'd tower over everyone here if she could stand all the way up on her tippy-tail, but that's fairly unlikely. Her hair is a blue-green, matching her tail fairly well. Compared to Thorn she's also less... covered. Wearing only a simple piece of cloth around her chest area.

While you're exaiming them, you remember something. Might as well scan them to learn more...

>Initiating scan...

You consider their names for a moment and chuckle a bit, before noticing that Rose is staring back at you.

"What's so funny?" She asks, her red eyes looking at you almost... accusationally.

"Your name is Rose." You say.

"What about it?" She asks.

"And you have a guardian named Thorn."

"So?"

You all stop walking. They're looking at you like you're crazy. That never bothered you though, if it did you might've started to go out of your way to not sound crazy by this point.

Then you realize something that didn't occur to you before. "Rose, what are you named after?"

Rose looks surprised and slightly uncomfortable. She looks up at Thorn, who simply shrugs. "My name came from one of the moons back home." There's something in her voice there... Sadness? Longing? You can't really tell, but you make a mental note not to bring up her home again.

"And you Thorn?"

"Much simpler, although kind of dumb. My dad named me after his spear." She says with a slightly embarassed smile.

"H-uh..." You say, you hadn't really considered that the context for their names would be different.

"You're acting weird..." Rose says. "...er" She adds.

"Sorry, where I come from there's a flower called a rose. It's a beautiful flower, but difficult to pick because all the way up the stem it's covered in spikes called thorns."

Thorn laughs at that, and Rose blushes slightly. "So that's what you were talking about!" Thorn says through her laughter. "I guess you're not completely crazy!"

"I'll take that as a compliment..." You say. That's as close to a compliment about your sanity as you've ever gotten.

"Takin' 'em where you can get 'em eh?" Thorn responds before throwing her head back and laughing loudly.

"C'mon, Oz should be in here if he stayed put like Savvi told him to." Thorn says, ushering you into the building.

So she kills dragons. With a giant sword. That's terrifying.

Further into the building, you reach a door. Thorn knocks in an odd way that you're pretty sure is a passcode of some sort.

"Who is it?" Comes a feminine sounding voice from inside.

"It's me you ass, now drop the housewife act and unlock the damn door!"

The door lights up briefly before opening, revealing a very messy room with a magely looking man inside.

"Uhh... Oz?" Thorn says.

"Yes?"

"There's an entire person there..." Thorn responds.

Perhaps you aren't the crazy one here after all...

"Well that's preposterous! To be invisilble to Visio rune means that there would be absolutely NO energy running through them. Which is simply not possible."

His head is only a few inches away from yours, it seems like he's looking at the electronic bits of your brain.

You can't resist, this is too perfect.
With your right arm you grab him, turn your head to look him dead in the eyes, and in complete deadpan say "BOOGIDABOOGIDABOOGIDA!"

"GAH! Fucking shit, fuck!" He jumps back a good 6 feet, cursing the whole way.

To your right you hear Rose and Thorn laughing.

'Oz' Squeezes his eyes shit for a moment, and when he opens them the blue glow is no longer there. "I'll be damned, there really is someone there!"

Through her laughter, Thorn says "I told you there was!"

"Well that makes this all incredibly awkward... BU where are my manners? My name is Osmund Daedalus Gerrent Wother Melltellian the 14th... But you may call me Oz."

He extends his hand towards you.

"Logan Drey." You say, accepting his handshake. "I can see what you meant about how my name didn't sound Aklabran, Thorn."

Thorn laughs. "It's quite the mouthful isn't it?"

"That's why I prefer Oz. Unlike those other sods."

"Oz-man-diddler?!?" You laugh pretty hard at that.

Oz puts a hand on his face. "I do not LET Savvi call me that, in fact I have expressed my dislike of the term. But it is one she apparently still calls me when I'm not around..." He sighs once before turning his attention back to you. "But you... Where are you from?"

"I'm a Human from Earth." Oz looks as though he's about to reply to that, but you stop him. "Which you've never heard of, I know."

He grins. "On the dot there man. How'd you know?

Now it's your turn to sigh. "That bit has become something of a routine... But aside from that, Thorn said that you're the guy with the knowledge."

"That I am. Though there still seems to be things that I don't know..." He says as he grabs a small, leather bound tome off the table in the center of the room. "Have a seat, no sense lingering by the doorway all day."

Oz sits down on one of the small couches, and you take a seat next to him. Thorn sits down on the other couch and Rose kind of... Lays out on top of both Thorn as well as the rest of the couch.

Oz then opens up the big tome and flis through the pages. He quickly reaches the end of the book, where a page with six strange looking magic circles are drawn. "Not this one..." He lays a hand on one of the circles and it shines, causing the book to disappear and another similiar book to appear in its place.

"Feel free to ask questions while I look for my Visio rune... I can never remember which book I put it in."

"I don't suppose you have any world coordinates do you?" You ask, hoping that he does. That would make this journey a lot simpler.

"I have a few in a small notebook, it's not much as I've been taking advantage of Rose's travel methods for the last little while. Savvi has it right now, but I'll be sure to let you have a look when she gets back."

Something there strikes you as odd. "Rose's methods?" You ask him, unsure of just what that may mean.

"Ah... hold on a second..." He reaches a page in his book and stops. "I suppose I may as well show you..." He puts two fingers onto a pair of small, matching magic circles. They begin to glow and he sort of pulls them off of the page and they hover at his fingertips.

Then he pokes you in the eyes. "Hey what the hell! A little wa-" You open your eyes to the same scene from when you closed them, but the scene is now painted dark blue. "What the..." You trail off, looking around. You can't really SEE anything like this. Instead you seem to be viewing the energy within all of these things. "Aether... Is this what it looks like?"

"Hmm... Yes I suppose a little warning may have helped. That is what things look like through a Visio Rune. Look at your hand."

You do as he says. "There's nothing there..." You can see your left arm and your feet, but not your right hand or your torso.

"Now, look at our dear little Rose."

You look over at Rose, she looks relatively 'normal' to this vision. Except for what looks like the tip of one of her fingers and a spot in her back, which radiate a near blinding light. "What are those?"

"I've coined the term 'skeleton keys' for them. They're her bones, you see. But they're not bones. They're made up of a material that acts as a perfect conduit for both Aether and Void, allowing one who has them to break through the veil and travel to other worlds almost at-will." He stops and waves his hands over your eyes and dispelling the strange filter. "And they're the reason that I've been travelling."

"You've been travelling to look for bones?" You ask, the premise sounds a bit fishy.

"Not bones, man. But the symbols imprinted on them." He opens his book again to a page filled with strange letters. "Pieces of the runic alphabet, all 223 of them. I'm so very close to finishing it. But..." He stops there.

"But?" You ask.

"What exactly are you Logan Drey?" He askes, eyeing you suspiciously.

You consider lying or cracking a joke, but he looks serious. "I'm the void knight." You say sternly.

"I know, I was there." You say.

"You were at the battle on Anitilles? I doubt that." He says. He's turned his book to a page with a rather large rune on it.

"I was not. But wherever that is, it's not where the Void Knight died. She died on Earth, in the underhousing district after she gave this to me." You say, pointing a thumb at the shield on your back."

He looks at you for a few more seconds, trying to see if you're telling the truth before he speaks again. "And what exactly does the Void Knight do, Logan Drey?"

"He guards the universe itself." You say, repeating the line that Achillea used when she described the role.

"Hmm... I suppose if you ARE the Void Knight, there'd be no sense in keeping this from you but..." He looks over at Rose. Rose nods at him. "I'm not the only one looking for these things..."

"Well, I'd assume so. If what you said is true there must be some-"

He cuts you off. Sitting back down next to you and leaning in close. "What do you know of the corruption?"

You furrow your brow. "I've heard that term before... Just once, from the old Void Knight when she gave me the shield. She said it had already begun.

"And begun it has. Whatever it is. I don't know much about it, but its agents seem just as interested in spreading it as they are in obtaining these skeleton keys."

"Can you tell me what you do know?" You ask.

"Can I... I suppose. Give me a moment." He looks pensive for a few minutes as you look on expectantly. "The Corruption is a phenomenon that occurs when the boundary between an Aetherian world and the void becomes... thin, allowing the void to permeate the world and all things in it."

He stands up and walks over to where a trunk is sitting on the far side of the room, reaches into it and pulls out a small glass tube with a strange looking purple rock in it. "This is what is caused by Void Permeation. A sort of... allergic reaction from the entire world." He hands you the tube.
The rock inside looks sick. Which is not a word you should ever use to describe a rock. "That is where my knowledge of its effects end, I'm afraid."

That's where his knowledge ends, but you have other sources.

>Scanning...

"I am fairly certain I have the cause pinned though. It is this war. The one between the Proclamation of the One True God and the Kalkarri. While the death of so many gods in such a short time has caused unnecessary strain on the boundaries, the fact that gods are leaving their worlds to fight has certainly not helped..."

"The strangest thing though, is the changes exhibitted by creatures that have succumbed to the corruption. Where they used to simply becoe feral, now they have started to show purpose. They have been hunting down the skeleton keys, and we've gotten into a few brushes with them."

>Scan complete!

Oz looks as though he was about to continue, when Rose perks her head up. It looks like these explanations bored her. But now something has caught her interest, as her eyes have locked on the door and her forked tongue flicks in and out of her mouth.

"Smell something?" Asks Thorn.

"Savvi's back!" She replies with a big smile.

Oz looks confused. "Right, you never did mention where you found the floating arm."

Thorn looks at Rose, who looks very guilty again. "I kinda... Y'know... stolehiswallet." She blurts out all at once.

You turn to Thorn, she looks exasperated, letting out a sigh before speaking. "Cut with the damn jokes already before you give the poor kid a heart attack."

"Aww, but she's so much fun to tease." She replies in mock sadness before turning to you. "I'm Savvi Ckerei by the way."

"Logan Drey." That's the fourth time you've had to introduce yourself today.

Oz pipes up from behind you. "Hey Savvi, ever heard of a world called Earth?"

Savvi looks confused. "Why? I get that he's friendly, but..."

"He's the Void Knight, Savvi. One of the few beings that can actually interact with the Void without a skeleton key."

"The Void Knight..." She says, looking pensive before reaching into her sleeve and pulling out a small, red leather book. "You can't keep it, obviously. But you can write down what's in it.

You lean back in your seat and crack your neck. "I don't know where Earth is. I was hoping that I'd meet someone out here who does, but thusfar my homeworld seems to be an enigma."

The tone in the room takes a turn for the depressing. "Sorry Logan, I didn't..." Oz says, looking pretty downcast.

"Not your fault. Besides, that place was kind of a shithole. I doubt that I'd go back for any reason other than to clean it up." You say, attempting to wash over your situation.

"The whole planet was a shithole?" Asks Thorn. "I highly doubt that."

"And you would be surprised." You reply.

"Well, it appears we have two displaced children then." Savvi says, she's now sitting on the arm of the couch next to you. Which is odd, because you never heard her approach...

"Two? Who else is..." You look at each of their faces in turn stopping at Rose, who looks several degrees more depressed than anyone else.

"Right, well... remember when I was telling you about skeleton keys? Well... you don't always get to choose then 'when' of your departure from a world..."

The when? Oh...

Rose pipes up. "It's not so bad now... I have Thorn, and Oz and Savvi... It's not like it used to be..." She trails off, leaning into Thorn.

That's kind of cute. Really sad, but still very cute.

"Sssssooooo... You mentioned something about food?" You ask Savvi, who perks up.

"Huh? Oh! Right, hold on..." She runs over to where she left her bags at the door. "I hope you can eat this stuff, it would be embarassing if it was all poisonous to you!"

I still have a lot of explaining to do, but it'll get done. Who knows, if there're more people like these guys out there maybe this whole thing won't be so bad after all

>End of Chapter 5

>Will continue tonight with a quick interlude as well as some Q&A, if anyone has questions.

>This is written by a friend of mine, who did most of the worldbuilding and character legwork for this quest. Enjoy!

An ancient temple, walls of smooth stone, and bygone tales sweeping across them like a gentle breeze. Here, we find a thin, black figure feverishly pacing about. Every fabric of his form bristling with rage "So close..." he thought to himself. "I could have done it. If that horned creature hadn't gotten in my way, I could have ENDED THIS MADNESS!!" "She had the audacity to get in my way... And very clearly underestimated me." His fingers began to extend and retract every few seconds. "And she chose to run rather than finish what she started... The trappings of a warrior, yet nought but a coward." He growled to himself, "I can only hope that I find her again... And give her a slow, agonizing death for letting that monster get away."Eventually, he finally came to a stop, "Every moment he still draws breath, Tattva goes unavenged." He said aloud. Looking down at his feet, he noticed that he had sliced some noticeable grooves into the floor. He kneeled down, running his hand over them, a look of concern in his eyes. He closed them, and tried to focus. It took him awhile, but he finally managed to calm himself. "I should take care not to desecrate this place," he said, "It is one of the few things we have left."

"Lord Kalki." The figure turned to face the entrance. A being of black stone kneeled before him; burning cracks all over its' body betrayed the fire that was contained within. "Stand." Kalki said to this creature. As it spoke, small licks of flame, and ember, spat forth from its' mouth. It's voice was like something rising up from some deep place beneath the earth. "It is as you suspected my Lord. There are Eture who have settled here." It said, "Geob as well. They have many settlements, and a few large towns. One of them is governed by a lieutenant of The Proclamation." "He will have information on Monthei... We may be able to catch up to him." Kalki mused. The fiery one began to speak again. "Yes, my Lord. We have deemed the Amon to be the most suitable for this task. Though we shall not proceed without your blessing." Kalki seemed to hesitate when the Amon were mentioned. He kept his silence for about a minute before he spoke. "... And have it you shall. Our enemies know little of the Amon, if anything. They are... the natural choice in this." Kalki's voice was quiet. When he finished he slipped back into silence, seemingly finding the walls a lot more interesting. "... My Lord?" The black one spoke, unsure of what to say. Suddenly, Kalki began speaking again, "... I will speak to their Master. You may go now." The fiery one bowed once more, taking his leave.

Kalki found himself in the center of a spiralling maze, standing before a giant obsidian tablet. The words had been raked, and clawed. Nothing could be understood. Anything there was lost. The tablet broke apart, as did the maze. All of it in pieces. All of it being drawn into a cracked sky. Before him was a cliff, and a figure standing at it's edge. Kalki moved forward. As he approached it's edge, he saw the world beneath crack, and shatter. The figure turned. Bronze armor gleaming, strange staff in hand, and eyes leaking energy from within his helmet. "Wonderful to see you again." The figure spoke with a voice which sounded like something was trying to burrow it's way into your head. "Diakunai." Kalki said flatly, yet, with some surprise in his voice, "How did..." "How did you end up in my chambers?" The bronze one said, cutting him off, "You didn't. I decided this would be quicker. Besides, I enjoy the view." The one called 'Diakunai' looked at the sun in the sky, which had turned cold silver. He continued, "You're mind is a fascinating place. So many twists and turns... But there is little that eludes me when I have the mind to know it." As much as Kalki tried to hide it, he was steadily becoming more uncomfortable. "I wish to make use of your children. They should help us learn more about where that creature has landed next." Kalki spoke with authority, focusing solely on the one before him. "And you shall have them." He said without any hesitation. "You say this each time I come here. Is there any point to coming at all? If all you seek is to play with me, then SPEAK PLAINLY! " Kalki was starting to get frustrated, and it showed. "You never say no." Diakunai said smugly. Everything slowly faded into darkness. The bronze creature was now a large beast of shadow, eyes paler than any moon. Kalki awoke. Standing in the temple. As if only a moment had passed.

>Yes. We've kind of been in an uphill slog of exposition. Expect things to get more exciting in the next little while.
