You are Percius Aurex, Captain of a raider-class pirate vessel. Formerly the 14th son of a noble family, you fled that life in search of adventure and to escape your status as a political pawn. Wait, no. That might not be the truth. Your father's letter to you, the son he believed dead and lost, may force you to reevaluate that view you've held onto for over half of your life. Emperor willing, you'll never actually have to do so without a drink nearby.

After your failure to stop a traitorous Captain of your wolfpack from escaping, you chose to return only with a prize in tow. To that end, you spent nearly a year of travel , though only weeks to your crew, hunting for a target. In the system that you now know to be called 'Valkyria' you ambushed a transport in orbit of the system's outer planet, your own crew overwhelming the target and causing the crew to surrender in less than an hour. Quickly discovering that the ship's Captain and senior officers were upon the planet's surface, you beat a hasty retreat for fear that they might transmit a distress call that would bring other ships in the system after your lone vessel.

Currently on course to your wolfpack's base in a remote star system, you've been investigating the captured prize's various personalities and captured cargoes. Your people will need near a month to verify the status of the ship's cargo, navigational data and possibly secrets it may hold; plenty of time for you to also sort through the captured crewmen and see how many will join you instead of be enslaved as laborers for the wolfpack. More immediately, however, you've personally met with a small number of personalities with the hope to add skilled persons to your crew. Heriun Jaenar is a -very- expensive, if veteran, Navigator; he has also been kind enough to inform you that his Navigator House will happily pay a ransom to have him and those under him returned to their number. Artisan Zeynep did not take kindly to your suggestion that he continue his quest for knowledge under you, and allow you to profit from the knowledge he gains; You're also certain that he will not be happy to speak with you again. Athena Alekto was much more compliant to your offer, though as even a minor astropath she could certainly spell doom for yourself and your crew; her meek nature and the treatment you suspect she suffered as a psyker easily leading you to act the part of a savior, perhaps. Even more amicable was Father Cassianus Enes, a missionary from your XO's homeworld Barivia, whom seems to be chronicaling his journey across Corgus. Finally there is the mystery man, Sebastion Wern. Supposedly the ranking officer at the time of your victory, none of your crew seem to be able to figure out just what this man actually did upon the vessel.

Oh, and how could you forget the Widow Leris, pregnant wife of the ship's presumably late former Captain.

Elise and Ana both give you long looks as you step from the woman's quarters, a cry of anguish muffled as she weeps heavily into something. Quickly shutting the door, you return their look with a frown. "What? I didn't do it! I told her she wasn't in danger of being sold as a slave, and that I'd seek to arrange her return to her home planet if possible. Her husband might yet be rescued and the two reunited."

"We really need to get you some sort of women's counselor, Percuis" sighs Elise. With a disappointed shake of her head, she taps something upon her dataslate. "Well, we're almost done for now. All that is left really is to address the ship's crew and perhaps the techpriests separately and offer them a chance to join us. Are we going to sell the ones that don't off to Lord Wilson or the other Captains?"

Question: Will the missionary be joining us for dinner as well? We could ask if he wouldn't mind joining miss Alekto and us.

Tell Advinessa that any of the crew that do not join us she has free reign to pick those suitable for servitor conversion and inform Orsola that if she needs anything from blood transfusions or the like she may find suitable candidates among the crew that don't join us.

Have them both maybe work with each other if they think it could improve the screening processes.

"Elise, can you spare yourself for an hour or two? Elise shoots Ana a stern look, and you catch the armswoman's hand retreating from one of her blades. Ana offers a sweet smile as she notices you've caught her "I'd love to join you, Captain." You both look toward Elise, whom shrugs. "For my Captain? Anything."

"Aaanything?" purrs Ana. The sound is a bit terrifying, but at the same time...

"But I won't do that" flatly states Miss Eberhardt.

"Should I be insulted?"

"It's not you, its the hats."

"See? Ana gets it."

"I'm going to tell Tes to spit in your meals."

Relief from the combined assault of the two women only ceases when your sister Synne arrives in the mess, one of the nicer outfits she owns drawing the attention of the pair. Your sister ignores them until she's given you a big hug, then quickly begins answering a flurry of questions about the little details of her outfit. After the chatting settles down you introduce Miss Alekto to Synne, causing your sister to blush in embarrassment at her oversight. Synne seems unnerved by the astropath's lack of eyes, though she handles herself as you'd expect of one of your sisters. To her credit, Miss Alekto quickly manages to change the subject from herself to Synne's dress before withdrawing from the conversation entirely. It would seem there is more to the scarred, eyeless woman than you first suspected. The thought that she could simply be acting the part of a meek, exploitable astropath puts a small shiver down your spine, and a moment later you're certain she seemed to sense it. No, you're just being paranoid. Aren't you?

Tes' cooking is soon served to those present and a plate put out for your sister Alica, who seems to be running late. Each plate is covered in a fan of thinly sliced grox meat about the size of your fist, with a similarly sliced and fanned half of the strange, dark fruit your people located before you departed in chase of Morix. You take a moment to study the green to yellow coloring of the fruit's flesh before setting your eyes upon the mound of white, fluffy, starchy deliciousness that occupies the other third of the plate. Ana is already greedily guarding her plate, and seems poised to stab any would-be thieves with her utensils. Synne and Elise are both enjoying the grox meat, while Tes carefully cuts her own fruit and meat into smaller pieces. Miss Alekto simply sits and watches the rest of you eat.

Somehow I get the feeling we have overlooked something...

I say start with the strange fruit to see how it tastes. While I want to point out that MIss Alekto is not eating I think maybe trying to converse might be a better option.

Do we have a bottle of that mystery wine around? I say open a bottle of that and pouring everyone some. Saving us and Alekto for last.

You get her with asking if she has had much experience with the drinking of wine. Talk about it a little but ever once in awhile ask her a question about herself. First start off with that she doesn't seem to be touching her food and if everything is alright. Then once talking about wine on our home planet inquire into where she is from.

No matter what happens the last question should be how she feels about hats.

also, we should have a more private interview/chat with Miss Alekto after dinner, with Ana listening in from outside ready to pounce, cause I'm getting some paranoia from her and if we are to trust her and welcome her to the ship and our collective family, we need to know everything, when we're in private, we should make that clear, that if we can't trust her, then we'll give her to another captain who is most surely not as kind or forgiving as us
>>
>>29861247

You motion to your hat-skull and instruct it to fetch one of the bottles of wine in your quarters. With a quick nodding motion it heads off to do your bidding without question.

The fruit is... odd. Tes seems to have placed some kind of lemon-like juice and a bit of salt upon the slices, and it has a strangely creamy yet... slightly nutty, perhaps, taste. A slightly bitter aftertaste assaults your mouth but soon fades; perhaps the fruit wasn't quite ripe. Tes has obviously noticed both Miss Alekto and your gaze upon her, but seems to accept that you're biding your time. A few moments later, your hat-skull returns with one of the bottles of mystery wine.

In no time you've gathered a few wine glasses and poured for everyone, including absent Alica, and pause to pour one for your potential subordinate. "Miss Alekto, have you much experience with wine?"

The woman's mouth twitches for a moment before she speaks. "I have only heard of and... smelled it." Now that she mentions it, you have noticed her nostrils flaring slightly, and you can actually see her attempting to remain still while shifting slightly toward the bottle you hold.

"Well I shall have to remedy that oversight." You pour Miss Alekto a generous glass of wine before pouring what little remains for yourself, sliding the astropath's drink toward her carefully. Skipping some of the less important steps for the time being, you simply begin at basic instructions for tasting the wine itself, the dinner table is no place to instruct one to enjoy the aromas of a wine and you'd rather not have Alica walk in to you telling a psyker to purse her lips and blow. You'd never live that down, not after that one incident with her friend...

Miss Alekto smiles slightly as you conclude your brief instruction, taking another sip of her wine. "Thank you." Wait, what? That was her voice, but... "I- I'm sorry, I didn't mean to!" Sweet Emperor, she talked inside your head!

You pauses for a moment, taking a sip of your wine. "Unless there is some great evil unknown to me that takes the form of the words 'Thank you', of course."

The psyker's blank, confused expression is a bit unnerving considering that she lacks eyes, but you do consider mild confusion a step up from near-panic. Her head slowly tilts to the left as you attempt to direct a thought at the psyker. "Are... you alright?"

"What do you mean?"

"Percius, are you trying to send a thought to an Astropath?" Alica seems to have arrived, wearing some sort of... You're not quite sure, but you're certain she's been taking fashion advice from one of your officers. Or what passes for it. As you struggle to process the horrific mismatch of clothing your sister seems to be wearing, she pauses and seems to count each of those present while pointing her finger.

"Percius, has it struck you yet that only one of your officers is male?"
>>
>>29864124

"I'm aware that Keller is, in fact, a man, yes. Why?"

"If I didn't think better of you, I'd say you're trying to build a harem of women around yourself" she deadpans.

Synne does a spit-take with her wine. Elise and Ana attempt to stifle their laughter, Miss Alekto simply looks further confused, and Tes places an elbow upon the table and rests her cheek upon her hand with an amused smile.

You simply gawk at your elder sister's accusation.

It takes a moment to collect yourself from this latest case of sibling transgressions, and you turn to Miss Alekto with a plea-like gesture. "I believe my sister fails to account for the fact that with my limited recruitment options the most competent persons available to fill vacant positions are simply women."

"Oh?" says Tes, a dirty little smirk pulling at her lips and her free hand quickly releasing a few of her shirt's buttons. "And how many 'positions' do you intend to have vacant tonight, Captain?"

"Don't encourage her, Tes. That is an order" you groan. Alica is quick to produce a second bottle of wine and refill the glasses of Ana and Elise, the two women seemingly enjoying this little exchange far too much for your own good. Poor Synne just seems unable to do anything but blush at the conversation.

Tes makes a cheeky, pouty face and simply shakes her chest at you. "You left me at that bar to go have fun with that Lieutenant Periun, back at Steward's Gate, and she was the only one in the place worth a glance. I'll encourage her all I want!"

"P-Periun!? Percius, how could you!" scolds Alica. "You know what lies that bastard Kerit was spreading about me back home, and what his goons made Synne see!"
>>
>>29882247

With a sigh you simply motion your sister to pour you a bit more wine while she's standing, luring her closer... "Hey! Percius! No! Stop it you little!" Alica never had a chance, and you've got your elder sister's head held firmly with your right arm before she even reacts to you standing. Your left hand proceeds to assault her hair and scalp, delivering a noogie she won't soon forget. Nor that she's likely to stop cursing about as you speak. "I have my reasons, and one of them is to see the look on dear Kerit's face when I tell him I've fucked his sister senseless and she loved every moment of it. I imagine I'll kill him soon after."

Elise and Ana look toward Tes, as if silently assaulting her to confirm or deny the story. "What? It wasn't like I went and listened to the door of their room!"

Synne is quick to finish the remainder of her wine, the conversation apparently not quite to her comfort, though you're certain she is still amused at the noogie that you're delivering to Alica's trapped head. "Let me go you little shit!" cries your victim.

The conversation soon becomes a bit chaotic, Elise and Ana zeroing in on Tes for further information on your little fling with Lt Periun while Alica's cursing fills the officer's mess. After a few moments the entire scene freezes as Miss Alekto's laughter dominates the room. "Emperor preserve me! You're all insane!" Her face is flushed red as her arms hug her own sides.

SPEECH INCOMING!

Well of course we are a little insane after all we have made it through another day. Tes and Ana with me ever since I was just a Platoon leader in the armsmen and we made it all the way here.

My XO Elise was a Platoon leader herself back in the day as well and we fought together to take this ship for ourselves and most likely would have done something crazy without her here to support me, but we made it to another day.

My sisters. "Hug Alica at this point" Even though I had became a pirate I was able to see them again and somehow convinced them to come with me. They always seem to remind me of what is important.

If I could be this way every day I would say The pirates life for me.

Grab the bottle of wine and pour a little of what is left in each glass "So I propose a toast." raise glass" To another day."

Also, after the toast mention that that was the first time we have heard Miss Alekto laugh and that is suits her.

You take the silence as a perfect chance to deliver a little speech to those with you...

"To another day" echo those present. The wine is finished off a moment later, both Synne and Miss Alekto retaining flushed cheeks and the signs of a healthy enjoyment of the wine they've imbibed. As everyone present turns back to their cooling meals, you decide to inform Miss Alekto that her laugh suits her prefectly. "I, uh... thank you, Captain Aurex."

Some small talk is made after everyone has finished their meal, most of it in the form of praised lavished upon a humble Tes, but eventually your crew turns their interest toward Miss Alekto's past. Unfortunately, she is quite loathe to speak about herself in any way and quickly changes the subject, especially when Synne begins to ask questions about her home world. Soon Alica and Tes depart, practically carrying Synne to bed after she begins to start asking some of your officers about their more... personal conquests. That most certainly is not a line of conversation you need to hear your younger sister speaking about.

Elise is the next to depart, checking a chronometer with a sigh. "We should do this again after we've taken care of the tasks at hand, Captain. Maybe we'll get more information out of Tes."
>>
>>29884828

"She'd better not have anything to tell" you grumble.

Finally it comes time to assist Miss Alekto to a quarters you hope she'll soon call home, Ana fetching a pair of guards to watch the door for the time being. Carefully placing the red-faced woman into a bunk, you're quite entertained by the outgoing personality that has surfaced and insists upon speaking in a voice that can only be described as somewhere between melodic and a sultry purr. Just how much is due to the wine is difficult to say, but Ana seemed to enjoy the scene as the Astropath decided to tell you just how nice everyone she had met at dinner had been. Most interesting is that she seems to have been able to see even the colors and fine detail of your sister Synne's clothing.

The remainder of your journey in-system is uneventful, and in just over three days you find your ship once more in orbit of the planet you hastily departed to chase Captain Morix. Elise is quick to shuttle over from the Captured transport to deliver the numbers on your recruitment drive.

"You didn't have much luck as far as the general crew were concerned, though you've also managed to gain about nine-thousand four-hundred slaves from their number. Considering we carved them down to nearly half a crew complement during the boarding, we've only managed to convert about four-percent of a crew for the transport. On the other hand, your percentage was better with the ship's techpriests. Ninety-eight of them chose to offer their continued service, and about three-hundred will end up processed by the fleet. All-in-all, nearly ten-thousand souls we can see about selling to Lord Wilson. We've also located quite a bit of wealth stored aboard the ship, and I've taken the liberty of having Alica see it divided into the appropriate shares. Not a bad pay-day, if i say so myself. We're all millionaires for the time being."

>Meet with Lord Wilson immediately

I'm sure he will want to see us as soon as possible.

"I'm sure that Lord Wilson wishes to speak with me as soon as possible. It may be best if I don't give him a chance to call for my presence."

In a blur you find yourself being led by a stranger into Lord Wilson's favored chamber, the helmet of the Astartes being displayed as a trophy staring into the back of your skull as you sit across from Lord Wilson. There is no drink offered, nor Lord Wilson's typical jovial nature in his posture or face. You're certain at least one of his guards seems to be expecting an order to end your life for your failure. Only Lord Wilson's gaze and the processional rapping of his fingertips upon the table that separates you both.

>What say?

"It is to my shame that I must report that the traitor Captain Morix managed to flee into the warp before we could run her ship down in time and with unfavorable currents, we were unable to catch up to her."

"Ever since our two ships became separated in the warp on the mission you sent us on to gather navigational data for the (i've completely forgotten the name of the paradise system) she seemed a changed woman, she always seemed to have something on her mind distracting her, souring her mood, I only wish I could have found out about her plans to betray us before she had her men kill my bodyguard and knock me out during her escape from the wolfpack."

I'm unsure of how to segway into talking about the prize ship we came back with and the nav data we got from it.
>>
>>29887204
Time to start from the beginning. Tell him how we nearly burnt out our engines trying to catch up with Morix, but she had gone to warp before we could fully catch up. At warp we lost track of her and though that coming back empty handed would have been a mistake.

We traveled to a sector of space where we encountered several ship and proceeded to stalk and capture one. Along with the ship a small portion of the crew and tech priest were swayed to join us leaving us with a total of 9400 slaves from the crew and 300 among the tech priest while 819 crew and 98 techpriest were converted to join us. Also the ship itself is relatively undamaged.

(I'm going to assume that we brought a copy of the ship's manifest with us) The ship in question was carrying these items Lord Wilson and we were able to gather navigational data on at least 6 systems from their computer. One of them looking to be in the process of being colonized by pilgrims which should make for good hunting grounds in the future.

The Navigator of the ship that was captured has told me if we wish to ransom him he can promise 25 million thrones and more if he is returned to him home planet of world of Noctis in Sector Deus.

Sir.

(Now to stay as perfectly still to see what he says)

Are you giving him the unverified cargo manifest or informing him that you'll have the verified one (ready in a month) sent to him once it is complete?
>>
>>29887879
In that case I say inform him that we are verifying the cargo at this moment.
>>
>>29887879
Let's just say we are verifying the cargo at this time and we will have him a cargo manifest as soon as possible.
>>
>>29887879
I'll second >>29887981

lets be honest, give him the unverified one, and say we're working to figure out what actually is and isn't there, tell him about the command crew of the ship we captured going down to the planet they were orbiting
>>
>>29888036
I can get behind that.

Lord Wilson remains silent as you tell him about your various separations from Captain Morix during your mission and then the events of her betrayal as you experienced them, conveniently explaining that your vessel was delayed in recovering vital crew from the planet before the chase could begin. Then that a minor miscalculation by a third-string helmsman placed your ship out of position to effectively intercept Morix before she could escape to the warp.

Then on to losing your prey in the twisting chaos of a warp storm, leaving you far from the wolfpack and without an astropath. He seems to get a small bit of amusement from the tale of your attack upon the transport, and more so when you inform him that you'd caught the ship with it's commanding officers upon a planet. Passing him the navigational data and unverified cargo manifest upon a dataslate, you explain that it will take nearly a month to verify the manifest and proceed to inform him of the apparent colonization effort of the Serentus system, seemingly by pilgrims. News of the House Jaenar Navigator's pay demands cause Lord Wilson to raise an eyebrow, though he finally speaks when you mention the ransom. "You'd be a fool to return the Navigator to his House's homeworld, it is far too deep into the sector and near heavy military presence."

With a deep sigh, Lord Wilson congratulates you upon your first prize. "I wish Erwin had been able to see this day, Captain Aurex. He had quite a bit of faith that you'd be a great pirate, and possibly that I'd have to watch my back once you hit your stride." He motions to one of his guards, the man moving to grab a pair of glasses and a bottle of some dark liquor. A practiced hand soon pours two drinks and slides one your way. "To Erwin, his faith in you was well placed."

Yeah, to Erwin. Emperor forgive you.

"Now then, Captain Aurex. I believe we can finally have that Captain's meeting now that you've returned."

As always thanks for the great thread MS!

Question: Were we able to get Erwin's body far enough away from the blast so that he could get a proper burial?

On the bright side we didn't get blamed. Now to see just how much this place has grown since last time we were here.

With the Shelters and Hab Bases help speed up our "colonization" of the planet and our island?
>>
>>29889146

Erwin's body was given a typical 'void' burial (he's somewhere in orbit or has already burned up in the atmosphere, by now)

The shelters and hab bases could be used to speed up your settlement efforts, though their biggest benefit would be felt in establishing a new settlement or as temporary bases.

the wolfpack's main slave-based farming settlement would gain little benefit from using these structures, as a hab capable of holding 40 people (or less, in the case of rapid deployment) isn't really making any dents in shelter needs when you're talking about thousands of people.
